Spring Hope: Local volunteers of the annual Cancer Society Daffodil Day donate their time to help raise funds for the annual appeal in Raglan last Friday and Saturday.

A

lmost a dozen volunteers, armed with 600 daffodils, took to the streets of Raglan for the annual Daffodil Day appeal, last week, looking “as bright as the daffodils” they were selling.

The Cancer Society Daffodil Day Appeal is an annual fund-raiser for the national organisation which declares its dedication “to reducing the incidence of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand.”

Cancer Society Daffodil Day Raglan Area Coordinator Jo Wallis said that most of the volunteers had “personal reasons” for giving their time to the appeal.

Volunteer Rochelle Lee-White said she

had helped for a few years “but this year it’s more personal because my mum’s got cancer.”

According to the latest Ministry of Health statistics, 1 in 3 New Zealanders will be affected by cancer, either personally or through a close relative or friend.

Another volunteer, Jenny Francis, said she had battled cancer for more than two decades and was grateful for, not just the efforts of the Cancer Society, but, the professional care she had received through her 26 years of treatment.

“When you see this [appeal] going on, it’s such a hopeful thing,” she said.

Jo said that Jenny volunteered every year and “always has a smile on her face.”

She said she had a “heart-felt appreciation” towards the “very generous

Raglan” community who gave “around the two-thousand dollar mark.”

“We really value people’s support. You know where this goes to and the research that they [Cancer Society] do to make things better.”

Jo said the team of volunteers, who sold all 600 of the fresh daffodils over the two days, brought a sense of “cheerfulness” to the appeal.

“They’re about as bright as the daffodils.”

She said that although it was “nice to walk away with a fresh bunch of flowers,” people who gave money to the appeal received much more.

“It’s a donation with a gift of hope.”

Raglan Club welcomes legendary ‘Grassroots’ Kiwi musicians

Raglan Club is proud to host three of the original members of Herbs in their ‘Herbs Unplugged’ tour, with supporting artist Shona Laing. It’s a night which promises to deliver straight up the very best these two New Zealand music ‘institutions’ have to offer.

Through the decades since Herbs began as a group of friends in a South Auckland garage in the 1980’s, the band has steadfastly remained true to its founding musical impulses, belting out songs that championed social and political issues. In recognition of this the band was inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

Shona Laing, burst on to the airwaves as a 17 year old in the early 70’s with her first two singles “1905” and “Show Your Love” gaining gold status. In 1975 Laing moved to Britain where she continued her craft for seven years at one stage performing vocals for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. In 2013 the ever-green performer was also inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame.

Sister finds new life after Te Uku Store

T

e Uku Store has lost one of its family members, Colleen, who is finding new life as a carrot cake baker.

Sisters Colleen and Sandra Finlay have run the family-owned store since their father died in 2000, and are almost an institution in Te Uku, like Colleen’s carrot cake.

Colleen’s share of the store has been bought by Raglan Roast, which has the business next door, but Sandra will keep running the business as it is for now.

The new owners said they were currently formulating plans for the future direction of the store, but could not comment further at this stage.

The partial sale has freed Colleen to pursue her interests in child-minding and baking and she has already begun building her carrot cake empire, appearing at local markets with hundreds of delicious little cakes.

“If and when there’s a Te Uku market, I’ll do that too. Then I can catch up with everyone,” Colleen said.

While she planned to branch out into red velvet, banana and chocolate cakes in the future, she said carrot cake was still the favourite cake of New Zealanders.

“Some people just used to come in [to the Te Uku Store] for my cake.”

Sandra, who was still living in the attached residence with her family, planned to eventually build in the Te Uku area.

Their Irish-born father, Cecil, bought the store in 1953 with colleague Wally Dryland. A few years later he later bought Wally out and worked hard so that he was freehold by 1963.

As the main store within a farming community, it was a thriving business selling bulk food, farm supplies, petrol and “pretty much everything” and making weekly deliveries to families in the area. A building supplies area followed later.

The family also operated the local Post Office, and at times, Colleen joked, even acted as an informal information centre and counselling service.

“It was more than just a store.

You always had a chat and it was really nice,” Colleen said. “Your customers are more like friends – more like our family.”

While Colleen had enjoyed the social side of the job, the shop had dominated the family’s life and after working in the shop since she was 16, she was tired.

“I wanted to get away earlier

on but Dad didn’t want me to go,” she said. “Basically I haven’t been able to do anything else because I always had to be here.”

They had seen a lot of changes over the years, as farming families moved on and the farms were divided up into lifestyle blocks.

The local school had grown from a mere two classrooms and a staffroom when the sisters had

gone to school, to the eight-class facility now attended by Sandra’s two children.

Both sisters acknowledged Colleen’s departure would mark the end of an era.

But Sandra was philosophical about the changes: “It’s more exciting to see where its going to lead,” she said.

Te Mata student represents Waikato hockey Te Mata 12-year-old Scarlett Sullivan is “passionate” about hockey and is representing Waikato on a national level, for a fourth year.

Scarlett has her “future planned” out and earning a spot in the Waikato Under-13 reps Hockey Team means she can execute her life plan.

“I want to make the Under-18 Midlands team then carry on to the Young New Zealand team, then the junior Black Sticks.”

Scarlett was one of 85 Waikato girls who trialled in July. Only 16 girls would be chosen.

“I was nervous and I thought, well I might make it into this team.”

She made it into the team and has a hectic training schedule.

“I practice Mondays after school, Tuesday I do a four km run, Thursday I have rep hockey practice from five-thirty to six-thirty and club hockey on Sunday,” she said.

Scarlett plays club hockey with women who range in age up to 55 years, she said.

“It’s cool to be around different

aged people. They all have different hockey skills, so it can be hard to cooperate with them.”

As a player on the Under-13 Reps Hockey Team, Scarlett would play against 23 regional teams in a tri-series tournament. The series will be held in Rotorua, Pukekohe and Invercargill, she said.

“I’m excited, I can’t wait.”

She said that there were so many opportunities playing hockey and encouraged everyone to play.

“It’s just such a great sport meeting people, going different places, travelling…people should play.”

Scarlett said her favourite player was 26-year-old current New Zealand Black Stick Anita Punt.

“She is someone to look up to because she’s really good at hockey and she’s really passionate about it, like me.”

Scarlett’s said the region she hoped her team would beat in the Tri-Series Tournament was the Auckland team.

“They’ve been good before but we can do better.”

Bow Street changes afoot

C

hanges are afoot in Bow Street with a new business moving into the old Post Office building and an extension planned for the shop next door.

A ‘2-Plus More Dollar Store’ would be opening about mid-September in the former Post Office building.

Hamilton builder Tony Park was putting the finishing touches on the shop, which would be run by his wife, Gloria.

They planned to sell all manner of fishing and household items, stationery, toys, clothing accessories, “plus more”, he said.

The couple, who were originally from South Korea, saw a gap in the Raglan market for this type of business after visiting the town many times with their three children to fish and kayak.

Two doors along on Bow Street is Thabun Bakery and Takeaways, now celebrating two years in business in Raglan after the owners lost their previous business in the Christchurch earthquake.

Bun, were hoping to extend their shop into the vacant shop between them and the new dollar store by the summer.

They made all their food from scratch on the premises, which left little room for them to move behind the counter and food cabinets in the current shop, Lim said.

Originally from Cambodia, the couple set up their first bakery in Avondale, Christchurch after Vutha learnt the bakery trade in the city.

The shop completely collapsed and was flooded after the earthquake, and the only thing the couple managed to salvage was a food cabinet.

“We lost the shop. That’s okay. We’re lucky we didn’t lose our lives,” Lim said.

So they started afresh in Raglan with their three children, grateful for a new experience.

“I’m not looking back, I’m looking forward. We keep going for our lives,” she said.

For the extension next door, the couple planned to include more seating, a toilet and a more spacious serving area.

Broken Phoenix Palm to be removed O

ne of Raglan’s 90-year-old Phoenix Palms in Bow Street, severely damaged in a storm earlier this year, will finally be removed next week.

The tree, which is the first in the line of palms, harbourside, up the middle of Bow Street, lost its entire top in the storm and was subsequently earmarked for removal.

The Waikato District Council (WDC) said work would start next week, weather permitting, on removing the remaining trunk.

As the Phoenix Palms were notable trees protected in the council’s District Plan, a resource consent had to be obtained for its removal.

The palm would not be replaced because the root system of the protected Pohutakawa tree alongside dominated the available ground.

“Anything planted near the Pohutakawa tree will struggle to grow,” explained WDC general manager service delivery Tim Harty.

Council had planned for the loss of Bow Street’s Phoenix Palms by planting eight palms in Oram Park, which were now big enough to use as future replacements.

Council was keeping an eye on several other Phoenix Palm trees in Bow Street, but would seek an arborist assessment and community consultation before considering removal, he said. Rachel Benn

Theatre Sports is a form of improvisational theatre which emphasises on building characters and on spontaneous, collaborative storytelling.

Raglan Community Theatre’s Athene Jensen (AJ) said the group met every Thursday evenings, from 7pm – 9pm, where they did warm up exercises “to

loosen people up,” role-playing games and, finally, Theatre Sports.

“People are pretty keen to put on a performance,” she said.

Anna Cunningham, who said she would be a regular Theatre Sports-goer, said the group had a huge amount of fun during the first session.

“I haven’t laughed so much in a long time as I did last week…I went home with sore sides,” she said.

AJ said the Theatre Sports sessions were a great way for the group to “pick up some new skills” and for those who “wanna go at something [theatrical] we’ll find you

e are coming up to the spring equinox on the 21st September and with this comes unsettled weather and strong winds.

Some people often find that this can disrupt and disturb their sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is something many of us struggle with from time to time. Factors that can influence our state of sleep are stress, worrying thoughts, poor lifestyle habits and overstimulation.

To help get a good night’s sleep you may find the following tips helpful.

• Turn off the sound of any electronic devices such as cell phones and remove them from your room. Invest in a cheap battery alarm clock if you need to wake at a specific time.

• Use dim lights or candle light an hour before you go to bed.

• Go to bed at the same time every night. Due to our circadian bio rhythm, the most restorative and beneficial sleep we get is before 12pm.

• Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, sugar and alcohol in the evening. The blood sugar fluctuations that they create can wake us during the night.

• Scent your house with relaxing essential oils such as lavender, ylang ylang, and geranium at night.

• Magnesium supplements can help keep us asleep. Magnesium is an important mineral for the nervous system and is one more than half the population are deficient in.

• Drink chamomile or relaxing tea blends after dinner.

The festival opens on Friday 12 September with Fantail, a Kiwi drama that’s shot entirely in a South Auckland petrol station. The location might not sound the most glamorous, but this clever little movie has a twist you won’t see coming.

This week the Chronicle caught up with Dirk de Ruysscher Who do you coach?

Raglan Senior School basketball team.

How long have you been coaching for?

4 years.

Why did you decide to put your hand up to coach?

I have 2 sons who are basketball fanatics, but the school didn’t have a real basketball culture.

Decided to step up and get more kids interested in the game.

Not everyone is built for playing rugby, you know.

Basketball has become rather popular at school now.

What are the highlights of coaching a team?

For 4 years, I have been coaching more or less the same group of teenagers.

It’s really nice to see how they have improved their game and how they are turning into fine young men.

What are the challenges?

Trying to keep these explosive hormonally fuelled teenagers under control!

Also, it’s always a mission to find the necessary funds to give our team the opportunity to go and play games over the hill against higher rated teams.

What is you coaching style?

I guess I like to keep things under control, so I try to be strict and keep discipline.

Easier said than done though.

I still like to participate in the practice games. Show those young guns some old school stuff.

I’m also open to suggestions from my players that will help to improve our team’s chemistry and playing style.

So it’s not all about dictatorship.

Is it all about winning?

Hmmmm, yes.

Who doesn’t like to win.

But playing a really good game as a team and still losing, just feels like a win anyway.

That makes me a proud coach.

Was sport important to you growing up?

Yeah, it was all about sport when I was a young kid.

I remember watching cycling races or basketball games on tv and then going outside to relive those memorable moments of sports history on the streets and playgrounds.

Sport has always given me a positive attitude and helped me to overcome struggles in life.

How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today?

Team sports are a good tool to bring a group of individuals together and it makes them work towards a common goal.

It’s basically what life is all about.

Accept one another as they are and make them feel part of a kind of family.

It may be a cliche, but playing sports keeps our young ones out of trouble. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind, even with teenagers.

Best piece of advice you could give to parents?

Be aware of your child’s interests (doesn’t have to be sports) and be involved.

Do your utter best to encourage your child to pursue their dreams, but don’t be too fanatic.

Mudsharks into fundraiser The Legendary Raglan Mudsharks plus special guests West Coast Jazz will be musically spearhearding a second 2014 Volunteer Rescue Services Fundraiser at the Raglan Club, Sat October 18th.

Doors open 6.00pm @ $25 per head with 400 tickets ONLY available!

As with the last fundraiser (2012), which raised just under $35,000, all the proceeds will be distributed evenly between our local volunteers rescue services coffers - St John Ambulance, Westpac “chopper”,

Area Fishing Report: by the Raglan Wharf Seagull

Spring is here. The swells are down. The whitebait are running thanks to the kahawhai chasing them our at sea and in our harbour.

Spring snapper are being caught to 5kgs along our coast mainly at the 32m mark.

The water clarity off Ruapuke beach south, to the aerials up north, is not the best (brown/green colour). Plenty of spiny dogs and a few large sharks are being caught in the bi-catch. They will be around for another six weeks until the water temperature starts to rise. Good size kahawhai are there too, along with gurnard full of small crabs. More gurnard are in the shallows (7 metres of water) off hard sand beaches like Carters, Ruapuke and Gibson.

We have been pushing the boundaries over the last two fishing days but it was well worth it, and we should be able to get out again with more frosty days predicted this week.

Best baits are still fresh, with pillies, bonito, and blue mack drizzled with tuna oil getting hit.

Flounder are around and yellow bellies of good size were caught in the net. Good mullets have been taken too.

Locals have been getting up to two pound of white bait per day in the harbour.

Daylight savings is September 28th and this will give an extra hour on the water. New moon is August 26th and fishing will be great off the coast up to the full moon on the 9th September. The Raglan Bar is on the leads. All lights are working and there have been no problems out at Manu Bay. A vessel has already run out of gas in the Raglan Bar area and one flipped off our coast due to being too close to the shore with a big swell running.

Kawhia has recently had a couple of boating mishaps in their bar entrance area. Please watch it in the bar area.

Boat batteries need to be checked if your boat has been laid up since last autumn.

So tight lines to all. Play it really safe in the sea. Layer up your clothes, and just have fun.

Local team makes the Junior Rugby finals

T

he Raglan Junior Rugby 11th grade team have had a great season and secured themselves a spot in the final of the B pool.

This team has come a long way from struggling to find enough numbers to form a team at the beginning of the season.

This 11th grade team merged with a handful of 12th grade players that were also left with no team to play in for the 2014 season.

On Saturday they were up

against Te Kowhai in the semi-final.

The team brought their all to the field and won with a convincing 40 points to 5.

The final will be played on Saturday 30st August against Fraser Tech at the Marist Club grounds (field 2), kicking off at 9am. So get

Spray programs for all fruit trees need to be planned to combat codling moth, curly leaf and aphids.

Care must be taken not to spray in full blossom situations.

Citrus trees although loaded with fruit need nutrients now. Compost around their bases or use animal manure.

Tips: When planting tomatoes

Sowing seeds is recommended up until the full moon on September 9th. Our new moon is on 24th September and notably daylight savings begins on Sunday 28th September.

For me this weekend is planting of onions, beetroot, lettuce and silver beet. Plant a few early potatoes into a warm sunny spot and these will be ready for early December.

Flower seeds can be started like asters, bedding begonias, marigolds, sweet peas, petunias,

out, add a tablespoon of milk powder under the roots or water to stop later blight in the plant.

Carrots: sow with radish seed to save thinning. If weed germination is a problem amongst the carrots then spray with full strength kerosene on a sunny day. Weeds will die, while the carrots will not be affected.

Kids Giveaway: We have 8 packets of four heather potatoes.

Plant them in warm clean soil.

Mould often once the potatoes come up, and they will be ready for Christmas if not before.
