Other than that I can't think of much I would change. I am content with the way it is now.

Bob: The lost potential is Wi Neera St which could be the connection from the camp ground to the CBD. Cliff Street has some of the best views of the harbour and the activities on it, and we do not promote it or make it easy to enjoy it.

Ro: On this side of the bridge in Raglan we have two toilet blocks for public use which are in their present state, an eyesore.

Else where in Raglan we have wonderful sculptures, murals and art works.

Could we not try to emulate Katikati and use those uninspiring blank walls by adding murals, trellises or maybe green growing walls. Wouldn't that be nice and an added attraction to the downtown area.

It's such a beautiful cottage and reflects the unique character of Raglan village. It would be great to see it done up and become a place we can all use - a hub of sorts.

John: It's over a decade since former council CEO, Warwick Bennett, held a field visit to Wi Neera Street to plan its use. The corrugated iron is now starting to rust. It's long overdue for a makeover.

Ashleigh, who recently moved from Raglan to Hamilton with her family, went to the games in Samoa earlier this month to represent New Zealand in the lawn bowls division.

She had to work hard for her gold medal in the women’s singles bowls, she says. Usually dominated by countries like Scotland, England and Australia, there were some “dark horse” competitors this time from Norfolk Island and Samoa.

Hearing the New Zealand anthem and watching the New Zealand flag go up while getting her medal on the podium was “quite cool”.

“I was just really happy to be where I was. I got to look at all the people who had supported me and see my mum in the crowd,” she says.

Ashleigh and her male partner in the mixed pair division got close to a bronze, but finished fourth.

Up to 1000 young athletes aged 1418 years competed for 107 gold medals in nine sports at the fifth Youth Games.

The 27-strong New Zealand team brought home seven gold medals, plus eight silver and five bronze.

“All our players got really hard draws, which was unfortunate.”

Ashleigh says the level of competition was really high and it was interesting to see how other competitors from other countries played bowls differently.

The accommodation at the Samoa Sports Lodge where most of the competitors stayed was good, and close to the dining

hall and the bowling venue.

The Year 12 Hamilton Girls’ High School student says meeting the competitors from other countries was a highlight. “I made some really great friends.”

But the days of competition were long, from 8am to 6pm, which made it difficult to go see other sports. Being outside all day in the 30 degree-plus heat was also tiring.

“It was definitely hard conditions for us bowlers,” Ashleigh says.

Now back in Hamilton, she is gearing up for the start of the New Zealand bowling season, with an Under-26 singles championship in Christchurch just a week away.

Ashleigh has now left the Raglan Bowling Club where she learnt the sport and has joined a new club in Hamilton but she says: “I’ll always remember where I started”.

Church pastor Doug Stephenson passed over the cheque to the Raglan Māori Warden Charitable Trust on behalf of the church last weekend, saying that the church believed in the work of the wardens and wanted to support that as part of the church’s own community work.

“We are talking about putting our money where our hearts are, and that’s what we’re doing,” Doug says.

“They help anyone who’s in need,” Doug says of the wardens. “I think these people really step up and help.”

Trust chairman John Bishop says the money will go towards the operational costs of the wardens, who also receive funding from sources such as Te Puni Kōkiri, Trust Waikato, WEL Energy, Sky City and the Gallagher Group.

John says about 1000 people come into the wardens’ Bow Street office every month. About a quarter of those are seeking

some sort of help, usually because they are short of money.

“It seems to happen all the time. Our people have problems with a lack of money for food, accommodation,” he says. “If we weren’t here, I don’t know what would happen.”

Earlier this month a woman who was staying at the camping ground with her six children came into the wardens’ office, saying she had no food for her family.

“She just drifted in and asked for some food for the kids. She had nothing.”

The wardens phoned the Raglan Foodbank, which is run by Surfside Church, to help. John says even though the food bank was closed that day, they arranged for a large parcel of food to be delivered to the woman.

“They do a good job, the food bank,” John says.

But the problem of not having enough money for basic living expenses seems to be getting worse.

“Why is it happening to our people?

Now and again we get Europeans coming in asking for help - but not to the same extent – and we help them too.”

“Our Māori are very shy – whakamā.

They don’t want to go up to the [Raglan] Community House to ask for help, they come to us.”

The wardens know of a pregnant woman and her husband who cannot afford accommodation in Raglan and are sleeping in their car, while other people have been found sleeping rough in the bush or around town.

John says rental accommodation is hard to find, especially for those who have previously fallen behind with their rent and then are stuck with a bad credit rating with local rental accommodation agents.

So the wardens also try to find housing, temporary or permanent, for these people, who don’t have a couple of thousand dollars for bond and rent in advance to get into a rental property.

Many of the people that the wardens help come from out of town, from places such as Auckland, Te Kauwhata and Hamilton.

“Maybe they’ve lost all hope from where they come from and they come here to try and pick up the pieces,” John suggests. “If that doesn’t happen, we’ve got to patch it up and pick up the pieces.”

Couple have made their mark in and out of school

Teachers Jason Tatana and Jo Reiri farewell Raglan.

T

hey love the Raglan lifestyle – and having helped develop educational,

sporting and cultural opportunities in the district – but teachers Jo Reiri and Jason Tatana have decided it’s time to return to their home in Palmerston North.

Aging parents in the Manawatu now need their support, they explain of their departure after four years here, but their experiences at Waitetuna School where Jo has been principal and Raglan Area School where Jason has taught since getting his teaching degree in 2013 have been “fantastic”.

The couple leave behind a thriving netball club they’ve helped to grow in the community – plus twilight netball for adults – while Jo has also seen big growth in her small country school, from a roll of 50 to 70-odd students.

The netball push started with the Waitetuna School team, says Jo, because they wanted then eight-year-old daughter Ella – who was at the school – to remain

involved in the sport after having played at high levels in the Manawatu.

That meant opening up the opportunity to play netball to the much wider western cluster of schools, which includes the likes of Waingaro and Te Akau. And that in turn led inevitably to the rejuvenation of Raglan Netball Sports Club from just one secondary school team a few years ago to eight teams which now include primary school-aged girls.

Getting sponsorship to support them has been a big challenge, Jo admits. “To kit out that many teams costs a lot of money,” she adds of the effort.

As president of the netball club, Jason has been busy organising managers and coaches but is confident now that others will take over. Twilight netball too has grown from six to 12 teams, he says, providing friendships and connections within the community.

Jason – who’s from a rugby background – has also been coaching junior rugby, and volunteered too to coach the area school’s secondary team when it needed reviving.

His time as a new teacher at the school, he

says, has been invaluable and he’s grateful for the opportunity to have begun his career in Raglan.

“Being both male and Maori has its advantages,” he quips of teaching and role modelling at intermediate-age level.

Outside of sport Jo’s especially pleased to have achieved for her school “a high level of cultural practices”, which did not go unnoticed during its latest ERO review.

“I wanted my kids in kapa haka,” she explains. So after developing connections with the local marae and introducing waiata as part of the curriculum, she was particularly proud to see last year her entire school perform as a group at the kapa haka festival hosted by Raglan Area School.

It was “very cool”, she says, because even though Waitetuna has a low percentage of Maori on its roll everyone – parents, children, teachers – supported kapa haka and are now looking forward to being part of the next festival in term four.

“It’s a beautiful little school,” Jo enthuses.

During her four years as principal a new classroom and toilet block have been built to accommodate roll growth, leaving the “multi-purpose” room free for other activities including the local playgroup.

Jo will miss seeing other current renovations through to completion and they’ll be overseen instead by deputycum-acting principal Margery O’Connell.

From the start of next term Jo will take up the principal’s job at North Street School in Feilding while Jason will teach years seven and eight at Roslyn School in Palmerston North, and also look after its sports academy.

Their children Ella, now 13, and Neitana, 6, say they’re “excited” to be seeing more of their grandparents again.

Call to stop dairy conversions

D

airy conversions should be stopped because of the worldwide glut of milk, says the Trans Pacific Partnership Action group.

Making a presentation at September’s Raglan Community Board meeting, TPP Action group spokesman Greg Rzesiowiecki said milk was being dumped across the world so New Zealand needed to be careful about what it did with its dairy industry.

He said state-owned Landcorp, the country’s largest corporate farmer, needed to stop converting its forestry land into dairy farms. Landcorp’s 26,000 hectare Wairakei Estate near Taupo reportedly has 17,000 cows, but plans to continue conversions so by 2021 it will have 43,000 cows on the estate.

Greg was talking about the TransPacific Partership Agreement (TPPA), a US-led trade agreement involving 12 countries - including New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Japan - that has been under negotiation for the past few years. It aims to cover 40 percent of the world’s trade and has wide-ranging implications for signatories’ ability to determine their own laws and regulations.

The most recent TPPA talks in July appear to have stalled over three issues: tariffs on car parts between the US,

Canada, and Japan; patents and copyrights, and; agriculture, with New Zealand being concerned about the TPPA effect on our dairy trade into North America and Japan, Greg said.

Meranwhile, concerns are growing in New Zealand about the environmental effects of dairying and the Green Party is calling for a moratorium on further dairy conversions by Landcorp.

Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright says dairy farming is continuing to damage water quality, with increases from conversions exceeding predictions. In the Waikato alone, 28,400 hectares of land was converted to dairy farms between 2008 and 2012.

Global milk prices fell by 50 percent last year because of strong global production, high inventory levels in China and a supply glut caused by Russia’s ban on US and European food imports, including dairy products.

New Zealand is the world’s largest exporter of butter and whole milk powder.

Our dairy cow numbers jumped in 2014 to a record 6.7 million, while sheep numbers dropped to below 30 million for the first time in more than 70 years, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Supported by many local opponents of the trade agreement, Greg suggested the Raglan Community Board recommends

that the Waikato District Council encourage the government to conduct negotiations in a way that benefits the Waikato and New Zealand.

“So we’re not opposing the TPPA, just asking that it be positive,” Greg explained.

The TPP Action group suggests 12 areas in which New Zealand could improve the TPPA, including providing greater access for New Zealand agriculture exports, particularly to the US, as the TPPA did not offer us increased tariff-free access.

Allowances should be made for local government procurement processes, to safeguard local initiatives, such as Xtreme Zero Waste, and genetic-modified and organic food policies.

Other areas include not giving overseas investors or suppliers greater rights than their New Zealand counterparts, not expanding intellectual property rights, and putting in enforceable environmental clauses to prevent the reduction of environmental and biosecurity standards.

The TPPA’s 12-point policy solution has already been adopted by 12 councils, representing 60 percent of the population, and the Raglan Community Board threw its weight behind it by recommending that the WDC also adopt it.

Councillor Clint Baddeley abstained from the board’s vote, which was otherwise unanimous.

been given to a documentary that pays tribute to Raglan’s wartime history.

At the red carpet award ceremony on Saturday night at the Raglan Old School Centre, Mike O’Neill was given the Bow St Depot Grand Phoenix Palm Award and a $200 prize for his Raglan Remembers film that commemorates the centenary of World War One. The documentary, which was made for the Raglan Museum’s WW1 exhibition, shows descendants of Raglan soldiers reading their letters and diaries from the battlefields.

Raglan Community Arts Council chairperson Rodger Gallagher says the seventh annual awards attracted 14 entries of a very high standard for the nine divisions.

The subject matter ranged from surfing and music videos to coverage of local events.

Rodger said many of the films were based on human interest stories, including Komako Silver’s winning documentary Tippahee, which told of the returning of a precious medal from Australia to Aotearoa.

The entries have to have a strong connection with Raglan - either the film being about Raglan or the film-maker residing in the town – and are judged by members of the council for their film making skills.

A marquee was put up outside the Old School venue to accommodate the 50-plus guests for the award ceremony and dinner, with guests including local MP Barbara Kuriger and Waikato District Creative Communities chair Richard Gemmell.

hildren’s artwork has been turned into gold for the Raglan Toy Library.

The Let’s Grown Early Learning Centre held its second art auction on Sunday and raised $2000 for the local toy library to buy new toys, with all art made by the children attending the childcare centre.

“In the months leading up to the exhibition, the children and teachers had been very busy creating their masterpieces,” says centre owner Kylie Milek.

The 63 eclectic artworks on sale included some funky tie-dyed t-shirts, screen prints, collages and textile art, with a large fabric and bead 'dream catcher' attracting the top bid.

The auction at Rock-It Café also gave parents the chance to see a short film by local filmmaker and one of the parents, Andy

Duggan, showing the children at the centre dancing and singing The Pom Pom Song.

“We thought the auction would be a great way to bring our families together and to have a bit of fun, and with all the proceeds going to the local Raglan Toy Library, it really made for some serious bidding.”

Kylie says there was such a great response to last year’s exhibition that the centre decided to make it an annual event.

“We were only expecting 20-30 people to come along to last year’s event and to our surprise, there was well over 100. This year also had a great turn out despite the gloomy weather,” she says.

Raglan Ray White Real Estate agent Julie Hanna volunteered her time to run the auction, and topped up the final amount raised to bring it up to $2000.

This year we started this series of people’s stories with these words… there are many intelligent arguments for believing in God but that’s not usually why people choose to love God. Usually it’s because they ‘experience’ God in an unexpected and undeniable way. Some were seeking God, others were surprised by him. I have enjoyed the stories so far and think that they reflect those opening words. They have been stories of love, of hope, of goodness, gentleness and kindness.

The point is that God is much nearer to us than we might think, and he loves to be involved in our lives. He loves it when we talk

This activity follows on from the Sports Parks Reserve Management Plan and General Reserve Policies Management Plan adopted by Council earlier this year.
