Therapeutic Massage with Shannon at Haven Massage Therapy S
hannon is a massage therapist who has been based in Raglan since 2006.
After completing her diploma in therapeutic massage with remedial body therapies in 2010, she has worked in leading spas worldwide, and as a dedicated therapist on private yachts. With a passion for yoga, she completed a 200-hour Hatha Yoga teacher training course in 2010 in Rishikesh, India. The combination of disciplines she has studied has allowed Shannon to create a holistic approach to the human body, engaging the mind, body and spirit to promote healing. She has developed her practice with the understanding that the human body is a beautiful and complex interconnected web, affected by both the physical and emotional aspects of everyday life. Massage therapy has the ability to reduce stress, encourage relaxation, improve posture and circulation, provide pain relief by relaxing the muscles to improve flexibility, and increase joint range of motion. It can also help to strengthen the immune system function and aid in rehabilitation post injury

or surgery. Shannon’s offerings include deep tissue massage, sports massage, trigger point therapy, relaxation/Swedish massage, myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, pregnancy massage, hot stone therapy, energy work and private yoga sessions. You can also find her teaching yoga at the Raglan Yoga Loft on Wallis St. “I would really love to see massage therapy transform into a something that is part of people’s self care regime. It really is still seen as a luxury, which is great, but having regular treatments to keep the muscular tissues healthy can be profoundly transformative, allowing clients to become pain free, relaxed and able to establish a strong mind-body connection.” Shannon works from a home clinic on Wainui Rd, and also provides a mobile massage service. aglan’s eighth annual Arts Weekend is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. More than 36 artists will be exhibiting in the town over Anniversary Weekend – with a large number of them new to the event. “We’re delighted to welcome over 10 new artists to this year’s Arts Weekend, ” says arts facilitator Jacqueline Anderson. “Raglan has always attracted a creative group of people, but our popularity has soared recently and we’re thrilled that even more talented individuals now call our little town home.” Those exhibiting at Raglan Arts Weekend for the first time include jewellery designer Sophie Lewis-Smith, whose intricate work featured in the movie The Hobbit; airbrush artist Dr Airbrush; and Sara Waugh, whose preferred medium is ink on paper. They’ll be joining well-established Raglan artists like Simon Te Wheoro, Chris Meek, Sam Mathers, Jane Galloway and Miranda Jane Caird. Many of those participating will be exhibiting from their own studios, while others will be located within the Old School Arts Centre on Stewart St. Raglan Arts Weekend is a firmly embedded fixture on the Raglan summer calendar, attracting hundreds of visitors from all over the North Island. The 2017 event takes place from Saturday, January 28, to Monday, January 30. This year, a preview exhibition will run at the Old School. Designed to provide an introduction to each artist participating in Raglan Arts Weekend, the exhibition will feature one-off, 300mm x 300mm pieces of artwork, alongside showcase pieces. Daily viewing will be available from Saturday, December 17, until Monday, January 30, and all the art will be available for sale, with 300mm x 300mm pieces available for $200 each. The Old School will also be the place to head to when hunger hits – the Stewart St site will once again be hosting the Little Food Fest throughout the long weekend. A firm favourite with visitors since 2015, the festival will dish up a tasty array of food and drink from 10am till 3pm on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Anniversary Weekend. Expect a tantalising selection of treats from local growers and artisan producers, with a strong emphasis on healthy and organic wares.

Life in Detail
WE CHAT TO LOCAL ARTIST JULIAN GODFREY, WINNER OF THE 2016 IHC ART AWARDS
Elsa Lye: a creative life A RT I S T Q & A
R
aglan is literally full of creatives. Elsa Lye, an accomplished artist with a long connection to the local arts scene is a new member of Ahoy, a shared art space on Bankart St around the corner from Atamira. This year we photographed Elsa in her studio and chatted to her about her work. Jacquiline Kay: How would you describe your artwork and what inspires you? Elsa: My work is inspired by nature, and the nature of materials. The challenge is to try and capture the place/idea and pin it to a surface or an object. It’s about what I see, love, feel and what material will make that real. I paint using different mediums outside in the wind and also tucked up in my studio. I also make sculptures in clay, Raglan black sand and rusty/stainless steel. I work intuitively. Jacqui: You have recently moved to Raglan but have always had a connection to the arts scene here. What has this involved over the years? Elsa: I have connections with Raglan artists and The Old School Art Centre for many years. Summer schools with

Susan Flight and Paul Judd, a solo show, as curator, video at the film festival and now my studio at Ahoy on Bankart St. and recently a group show with Ahoy artists at Chris and Shelley Meeks. Jacqui: What studies have you completed ? Elsa: I am always learning, however I completed my Master of Fine Arts in 2010 majoring in video. Jacqui: Tell us about your recent works? Elsa: Yesterday l made small clay pieces referencing the tiny sand islands made by the tide. Jacqui: What is happening for you in 2017? Elsa: Our MFA group are exploring the possibilities of showing in Auckland’s Art week 2017 our topic is Endangered. Jacqui: Where can people view your work? Elsa: Paintings with Jan at Kanuka and also at my studio, Ahoy, 11 Bankart Street Raglan and the Old School Art Centre.
How would you describe your artwork? I draw using fine-tipped pens with lots of detail. I fill the images in with patterns instead of colour. Some of the drawings are photographed by Stuart Mackenzie and printed out as lightfast drawings. Sometimes I colour them with watercolours so they will last a long time. What kinds of thing do you like to draw? I like doing landscapes, as well as abstract patterns that take me ages. How long do you generally spend on one artwork? I draw while I listen to music because they take so long – it takes between one and three weeks to do one but I don’t work on them all the time. Congratulations for your win earlier in the year in the 2016 IHC Art awards. What did this involve? I won the People’s Choice Award through Facebook votes. The competition is on every year and the first prize is $5000 so lots of people enter. You are from a very artistic family. Have you always loved to draw? When did you really start to love it? My mum always drew and painted with me, since I was about 3. When Mum painted her series of watercolours called “There Is No Planet B” I got really inspired and started drawing lots of towns and roads. Then I did a couple of paintings called Earth Skies which people really liked. When we had the Arts Weekend I sold quite a lot of my drawings and that encouraged me to keep going. What other artists’ work do you like? I like Chris Meek’s work because it’s really loose, not like mine. I like visiting his studio. I just do my own thing usually. What’s happening in 2017 for you? I have been focussing on doing new work for the Raglan Arts Weekend that is on at the end of January 2017. That’s when I have new and old work on display that people can buy. I am listed under Palm Prints on the brochure because I show my work with my mum, Jane Galloway, and step-dad Stuart. My dad, Brian Godfery, paints too and I’d really like to do an exhibition with him next year. Where and when can people view your art? My work can be seen online at www.palmprints. co.nz and also at thecleverdesignstore.com. I have work in galleries in Tairua, New Plymouth, Cambridge and Soul in Hamilton.
HEARTbeads : Handmade glass art FROM VENICE TO RAGLAN, GLASS ARTIST PETER HOHENBERGER SHOWS US A GLIMPSE INTO HIS BEADING LIFE
H E A RT B E A D S Peter Hohenberger - The Glass Artist: What fascinated me most in high school was art, particularly Art Noveau with all those intricate flowing, flowery, complicated designs. When I migrated to New Zealand in 1996, after a professional career in software and high-tech IT in Europe, I set up “La Fleur bleue”, a glass studio dedicated to the art of L.C Tiffany. For many years I created beautiful lamps, mirrors and windows, reflecting the work of Mr Tiffany and introducing my own designs. Ten years ago I watched a glass artist in Venice working at the torch, melting glass, creating three-dimensional objects, and I was hooked. Since then, I started HeartBeads, making handmade glass objects and jewellery completed with sterling silver. Everything is created in Raglan, New Zealand. and jewellery, created from my own work. My inspirations come from simply looking out of the window at Moonlight Bay – the colours of Aotearoa, the light and the everchanging wonders of nature. How I do it My raw glass comes from Murano, an island near Venice, Italy. Working on a glass artist’s torch (running on LPG and oxygen) I melt this glass into different shapes and structures, giving colours with different transparent and opaque glass. Techniques like raking, swirling, dots help me to shape every single glass object into something totally unique. There will never be two the same. Open studio - what you will see You can watch me working “at the flame” – using the torch, melting glass, making beads. You can even try your luck and make your own bead! ay! It’s summer again! After lots of rain over winter and spring we now have fat, happy horses ready for their busy time of trekking. In addition to our private eco cabins we now have a new, fresh spring water-filled hot tub secluded in the bush, ready for a relaxing soak. (Please note, the hot tub is booked separately.) If you want to explore the environment and scenery, horseback is the way to go. With two daily trips you can choose our three-hour extreme adventure for a ride along ridges, crossing through streams and over stunning farmland. Travel through mature native bush and regenerating manuka and kanuka to end up on the volcanic glistening sand of Ruapuke Beach. Enjoy the waves (yes, we do go in) then continue down the beach for a good gallop, a controlled canter or a quiet walk for those who like to take it easy. Our two-hour option experiences similar views and scenery, just a little shorter and less extreme, perfect for families or groups with no riding experience. So take a beautiful scenic drive around the spectacular Whaanga coast … keep driving and you will find us at Ruapuke Beach. An alternative, less gravelly route can be taken via Te Mata Rd.
We are proud to have been a finalist in the Bookabach Golden Piwa Awards for eco bach of 2016, for our two cabins, Windyflax and Watersong, perched on a bushclad valley with wonderful ocean views, and of course the majestic Karioi te Maunga. Listen to the biggest waterflow off this side of Mt Karioi, as the Wairake Stream flows below the cabins in the valley. Run off alternative power, you can hide away with no wifi and little phone coverage. The cabins are simple and stylish and have everything you need for a great few nights away. While off the grid you can relax, unwind, look at the stars, listen to birds or admire nature in our chemical-free hot tub. Each hot tub booking is filled fresh for your stay with beautiful spring water. Happiness and memories are what we aim for. Our family has been up and running with Wildcoast for two decades now, with lots of love for our horses and the people we meet. Our horses are beautiful and well mannered, just like our guides! On our Plate The Wharf Kitchen and Bar
J
ust over a year old now, The Wharf Kitchen and Bar has quickly established itself as a staple in the Raglan eatery scene. Housed in the old Marlin Bar location at the end of Wallis St, owners Helen and Barry have transformed the once fading haunt into a roomy delight, featuring whitewashed walls and gorgeous furniture. The waterfront location has inspired a diverse menu, featuring fresh local seafood and prime New Zealand meat. Ideal for family dining. The Wharf aims to take good food and make it great, as its current summer offerings will attest. The breakfast and lunch menu is sure to keep the crew happy, featuring ugly bagels topped with salmon and capers, classic bacon and egg plates, along with chowder, burgers, and chicken parmigianino. The dinner menu brings both big and small plates to the table, so narrowing it down to just one might prove difficult. Perhaps we could suggest starting with the scallops, which are accompanied by a flavourful medley of signature sauces and greens: it’s the perfect starter for a summer evening meal. If you’re out with friends, sharing is the way to go. The popular Seafood Plank features sashimi, ceviche, prawns and more,

complemented by a fish pate and sesame mayo. And if you’re in the mood for more, The Big Wharf Plank with meats and cheeses has got you covered. But if you’re extra hungry and not wanting to share, anyone of the big plates will keep you happy. From an aged eye fillet, complete with a horseradish cream and jus, to cajun fish tacos, The Wharf really has something for everyone’s taste – we even have a new children’s menu. All of this is presented alongside Helen’s handpicked drinks menu; there’s a wine list that
explores many regions, with wines to enhance every flavour on the menu. With balcony seating, the restaurant gives you paradise within paradise. Whether you’re heading down for breakfast, lunch or dinner, be sure to have an open schedule. With the sharp and friendly service, the sea view and the flavours, The Wharf will keep you glued to your seat. The Wharf Kitchen and Bar is open everyday from 9.30 till late. Courtesy transport is available by phoning 825 0010.
We can cater for group booking’s, live music, inside & outside seating and individual fish meals with side salad’s.

Wok's up at Blind Tiger B
lind Tiger owner Rob Bailey saw an opportunity in a temporarily empty building that had once been an iconic restaurant in Raglan, before the town’s crazy heydays, and has set up his own pop-up eatery for summer. “I ate at Vinnie’s when I first came to Raglan, it was one of the best places to eat … I jumped at the opportunity to have the building short-term.” Rob, who is the director of local radio station Tractor FM, says that Blind Tiger will focus on street food from around the world: “Quick to cook, affordable and fresh, simple ingredients.” Wok food is a major feature – think curries, noodle dishes and stir-fries – with the chef practically cooking deliciously smelling creations right on the street. “I wanted the theatre of the flames and the waft of the food coming out on the street,” says Rob. “I’ve had had people drive past and stop to come in because of the smells. Blind Tiger also has a wood-fire pizza oven that will be cranking in the back garden. Rob says there will be a fair bit of alfresco cooking, such as chilli sweet corn and satay sticks on the BBQ. Blind Tiger will initially be opening at midday and Rob says he’s not going to compete with the coffee crowd but offer fresh, homemade organic juices instead; and delicious Oob Organic ice cream. Beer will include a craft range from the Sawmill Brewery in Leigh – “the best beer ever”. There will also be beer on tap. Rob will keep the kitchen open late, till about 11pm, with Tractor’s DJs providing music entertainment. There are plenty of spaces to sit – in the main gallery where paintings by local artist duo Buck Wiremu hang, out on the street, upstairs on funky sofas, or in the garden out the back. “Blind Tiger represents craft beer, cigar bars, cool music, stuff like that … Blind Tiger establishments tend to be more low-key, underground, word of mouth,” Rob sums it up.

The Rangitahi Project
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
G
et amongst this new sustainable urban community. This is a project that will define and protect the future growth of our humble coastal lifestyle. It is set to be a perfect model for sustainable living. The vision for this project is to create an extension of our colourful Raglan neighbourhood over to the Rangitahi Peninsula, a ‘waterway wonderland’ filled with natural reserve areas, walkways, and regenerative planting. It will provide a gateway to vibrant new energy and plenty of opportunities. How cool is that. The Rangitahi Project will celebrate local culture and create lifestyle options for a diverse range of people. It will include both weekenders and full time residents, with plenty of greenery, a few local shops and maybe even a cute little ‘produce to plate’ restaurant. With it’s unique process and structure, it will allow the
community to become more effective ‘stewards’ of their land. With great respect for the surrounding coastal environment, the Rangitahi Project is initially developing approximately 8 hectares on the northern tip of the peninsula into a residential living zone. The peninsula will be accessed by a new bridge, replacing the current causeway and walk bridge. This new bridge will be a real improvement and at the same time, enhance ecological values. If you want to check it out over the holidays, go and grab a paddle board and explore the beautiful harbour inlet. Explore the rustic colours, the cool rock formations, the little nooks and cranny’s surrounding this native New Zealand wonderland we call Rangitahi. From January next year, you can also come and see Sophie and Sam at the ‘Rangitahi Shed’. These two have plenty of passion and plenty of
understanding about this special place. When it comes to creating a blueprint of what a new, sustainable and fun community should look like, they have the respect and vision needed to accomplish it.
‘The Rangitahi Shed’ will be open on the 16th January, which will be our ‘Rangitahi basecamp’, providing you with any information you may need in regards to section availability and future vision. Appointments to be made through our website: www.rangitahi.co.nz

Raglan Surf Emporium R
aglan Surf Emporium, owned by JC and Mel, is situated down Volcom Lane next to Raglan Roast Coffee. It’s a one-stop shop for all your surfing and apparel needs. They stock a large selection of women’s and men’s clothing including swimwear, jandals, sunglasses and accessories. They have a great range of surfboards and wetsuits, and offer surfboard, body board and wetsuit rentals.
How did you end up in Raglan? I grew up and started surfing at Lyall Bay in Wellington. I first came to Raglan in 1985 for a Moray wetsuit U18 surf contest. I fell in love with Raglan and the left-hand point breaks straight away and made a promise to myself that this is where I would live one day. I continued to come back to
Raglan each year while living in Australia. On a family trip to Hawaii, we were in Haleiwa on the North Shore one day when I said to my wife that Raglan was our Haleiwa and we should move back to New Zealand, so in August of 2011 we moved home to spend more time with our two sons and to surf.
What were you doing prior to doing business in Raglan? I moved to Australia in 1991 and was one of the founding members to have the licence for Volcom Australia/New Zealand. We started in the back of our house at Manly Beach, Sydney. The spare room was our office and we held all our stock in the cupboards in our bedrooms and in the hallway of the house. All team riders stayed in our lounge, with the likes of Bruce Irons and his brother Andy Irons, who didn’t ride for Volcom; Terje Haakonsen, Dustin Dollin, Ozzie Wright, Jay Quinn and Dean Morrison, to name a few. We had very little experience in running and marketing a clothing company but learnt as we grew and I made sure to surround myself with a strong team experienced in production, design, finance and sales. I became CEO of the company in 1999 and in 2010 we sold the business back to Volcom Inc USA. How did the Raglan Surf Emporium originate? Tony Bruce and I had been shareholders in Volcom and the Gag surf shop for a number of years. Once I moved to Raglan, TB sold me his share of the Gag
surf shop business so he could concentrate on Raglan Roast. When we took over the store it had a lot of product and Volcom samples from our New Zealand reps as their office was above the Yot Club. So I came up with Raglan Surf Emporium as it was a shop that offers a wide variety of goods. Your hoodies are super popular with tourists and locals, young and old. How did you come up with the design? One of my artists for Volcom was Jamie Brown, so I had him design the RSE logo. I sent him a couple of photos of Indies and asked him to draw it in his style. I really like his style and I like
how he added an orca – or is it a shark? – in the valley of our logo. The international creative director for Town and Country, artist Anaru Wilson, designed the shaka logo and we continue to work together on new art work for RSE. What can we expect from Raglan Surf Emporium this summer? Solid customer service with a smile from all our staff; the best product from all the brands we stock; and a detailed map on where to find the best coffee in Raglan – right next door.

own a little alleyway called Electric Avenue, behind Volcom Lane, is one of Raglan’s bestkept secrets. You’ll see people emerge carrying striking jute bags filled with organic fruit, vege and more. WOK (Whaingaroa Organic Kai) was started in a small garage nearly 10 years ago by one family looking for ways to bring organic food to Raglan at a reasonable and affordable price (a bit like a food-buying club or co-op). By 2015 the operation had grown enough to justify moving into a retail premise without compromising on our core principles of ethical trade and fair prices. At WOK, we are very discerning about which products we stock. You won’t find any GMOs, preservatives or artificial colours and flavours in any of our products. You’ll have to look hard to find sugar. We are, however, high on quality, natural ingredients and – crucially in these days of slick marketing – transparency around our products and their origins. As far as saving our planet before it’s too late, at WOK we understand that organic is not enough. The most effective and radical action is to support local goods and services. That’s why we’ve put over $230,000 back into Raglan and the surrounding area since August 2015. We have a large selection of bulk bins offering great prices and which help reduce packaging waste. Awareness about dairy-free, gluten-free and sugarfree options is growing faster than ever and our plucky crew can help you navigate the choppy waters of food choices. Food should be fun. Our specialty is our popular Organic Fruit & Vege Bags which we can pack any day of the week. Just call the shop or drop in

Rivet: vintage industrial chic
W
hen Wendy and Stan Lemmon set about creating a vintage industrial look to their new home in Okete, they found it very difficult to source household items to suit the design. “It’s taken a long time to get it for our own home and I thought that’s crazy,” says Wendy, who had to traipse all around the countryside in search of one-off, reconfigured pieces of furniture and decor. “I thought other people must have the same problem.” So the Lemmons decided to open Rivet, a gallery space of machine-aged designs, in the old dairy factory in Wallis St, Raglan. Vintage industrial takes inspiration from beautifully engineered furniture and machinery originally created for office spaces, factories and workshops. It includes a lot of metal and wood. “Simple, straightforward classic utilitarian objects are reconfigured for a modern use,” says Wendy, who started young with her creative bent. “My first memory is my grandfather’s big old shed where he encouraged me to make all sorts of things, so I was always being creative. That’s the part I like, refurbishing. The creating and bringing back to life.” Stan, a builder by trade, also has a similar passion, fuelled by growing up on a museum site in Puketitiri where everyday life had involved restoring unique items. Stan’s son, Joshua, is also a part of Rivet, adding his own artistic flair. The Lemmons make numerous items out of old wine barrels, including large platters and dog beds; they turn old English trunks into sofas; and will style tables and cabinets to order. Work by other known New Zealand artists is sold, too, and Rivet also stocks items sourced from Europe, such as old bar tables and stools from Munich beer festivals, medical cabinets straight from Polish hospitals and old ship clocks Smaller-ticket items – soaps, fresh flowers, wooden chopping boards and gift cards – are also for sale, so there is something for everyone. Wendy says they are excited about opening Rivet, just after Christmas. “It will definitely be a different feel for Raglan.”

Slash is seen in a promotional video for the band wearing the Bad Apple muscle tank in the OG colourway and Frank wears the Logo Cap in red, which can be seen on his Instagram account. Label directors – who are huge fans - are loving the endorsement from their idols. “I’m the biggest Slash fan and have been since I was 13,” said designer Mala Brajkovic. “He’s influenced the way I dress and the music I’m into for as long as I can remember. Seeing Frank and Slash in Bad Things on stage was a massive fan geek moment for me!” Bad Things was launched by New Zealand
designer Mala Brajkovic with her partner and model Vinnie Woolston (currently the face of YSL fragrance La Nuit de l’Homme) and fellow creative director Maki Nishiyama. Fans of Mala’s previous eponymous label, worn by the likes of Kim Gordon and Juliette Lewis, mourned her departure when she closed up shop in 2008. Mala’s new art-driven brand, Bad Things launched in 2014 with comic-gore and heavy metal influenced graphics. The brand has collaborated with iconic Santa Cruz Skateboards artist Jimbo Phillips as well as Australian metal artists Glenn Smith, who produced the ‘Bad Apple’ print worn by Slash and Bridge Stehli, the creator of the super rad Smokemon project reimagining cigarette packs with mashups of cute animals with rap and heavy metal art, who has also collaborated with the brand.

Telling someone that you have surfed in Raglan is a story that captures attention and admiration from fellow surfers around the world. Raglan’s surf history only began in the 1960’s, but since then it has shaped the town into what it has become today. From a handful of local surfers and no surf shop, things have definitely changed. Surfing has been embedded into the heart of Raglan and plays a vital role in the wellbeing of our community. Whether you are a sea-salted veteran or a fresh starting grommet, there is no denying the excitement and adrenaline rush you feel when you get to your feet for the first time. If you are new to Raglan or have visited our black sand beaches once or twice before, there are a few things one should know to make your time surfing in Raglan fun and safe. • The ocean is a dangerous place. New Zealand costal waters are some of the most ever changing and raw in the world, so take note. If you are not familiar with the open ocean ask someone for advice. If you can see a person that looks like they know what they are doing, it is probably because they have put their time in to learn, understand and have respect for the ocean. • Total beginner? Stick to the beach. Although it might sound cool to say you’ve surfed the infamous Manu Bay, during the peak summer season the congested lineup on the Points can be a dangerous place for inexperienced surfers. If you are not confidant in your ability, surf the beach. It’s a perfect area to learn and is recommended for yours and everyone else’s safety.
• Feeling pretty confident about your skills? If you’ve been surfing for a few years, The Point might be the reason you’ve made your way to Raglan. During the summer the lineup can be very crowded, so be respectful, wait your turn and don’t drop in. • Women deserve waves too. Surfing lineups are stereotypically a masculine dominated environment, but woman have as many rights to waves as men. Give some respect to the Ladies of the line up, and a small amount of encouragement could make someone’s day. • No one owns the waves, but some have been here long enough to lay a pretty good claim. There are some surfers in the line up who have lived and surfed in Raglan since the 60’s. They are part of the community and have helped Raglan become the town it is. Be considerate to everyone in the line up, you never know who you could be surfing next to. • Attitude could get you more waves than ability. You can be the world’s greatest surfer but with the wrong attitude, catch nothing. The ocean is for everybody to enjoy, and no one owns the waves. However respect and appreciation for etiquette will go a long way to getting more waves. Leave your arrogance on the land and remember to enjoy yourself out in the water, because that’s what surfing is for, enjoyment and fun! • There is a new timetable for the Surf Lifesaving Club. The Raglan Surf Life Saving Club volunteer service will be patrolling Ngarunui Beach from Labour weekend until Easter weekend. Week day patrols are ran by the Surf Lifesaving Northern Region from 12 December to 17 February. Whether you are heading out into the water to surf or swim, be smart, considerate, respectful and stay safe in the ocean.

Please Remember Your Reusable Bag *If you don’t have one ask for a compostable bag!
Plastic Bag Free Raglan PLASTIC BAG FREE RAGLAN – PEKE KIRIHOU KORE WHAINGAROA LAUNCHED THEIR CAMPAIGN THIS PAST JULY, SETTING OUT ON A MISSION TO CREATE A ‘SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAG FREE TOWN’ BY JULY OF 2017.
A
s a seaside town, it is vital for us to care for the water and the surrounding environment that feeds into it. One of the easiest ways this can be done is to limit the amount of single-use rubbish we are creating as a community.
bags from waterways leading into Manu Bay, from the bush areas around town, pulled them from storm drains in the CBD, found them in grassy banks along the harbour and have spent hours picking them from the beach, even digging them out of the sand.
The Whāingaroa Environment Centre, Raglan Chamber of Commerce and Xtreme Zero Waste have long since recognised this and at the end of 2015 came together to establish Plastic Bag Free Raglan [PBFR]. Through surveys conducted within the businesses, PBFR found that although our town might be small, we are using over 800,000 singleuse plastic bags per year, with over 20,000 of those bags leaving shops each week of summer alone. As more residents move in and our tourism numbers grow, this number will continue to rise in the coming years.
To combat this growing, toxic problem, Plastic Bag Free Raglan distributed a koha of 2,500 reusable jute bags to Whāingaroa-Raglan residents. Providing a sustainable option in lieu of a single-use plastic bag.
Single-use plastic bags are considered valueless when it comes to recycling, and only some of the bags end up in landfill. An alarming number ‘escape’ into the environment. To make matters worse, plastic is not going to go away anytime soon. It will take years and years for one plastic bag to decompose, and when it does it will leave behind chemical toxins, contaminating whatever area it’s laying in. The PBFR team and many local residents have collected loose plastic
Many shops in Raglan are now also carrying compostable bags, that look like a regular shopping bag, but can be reused and then composted. If the bag were to get loose out in the environment, when it breaks down it will leave behind no toxic chemicals. We hope you will join our community in standing for the environment and take a reusable bag with you when you visit our shops. If you would like an exclusive Plastic Bag Free Raglan reusable bag, you can purchase one for $15 from The Herbal Dispensary, Whāingaroa Organic Kai (WOK), Matapihi Art Gallery, the Te Uku store and on WEC Wednesdays at the Environment Centre.

* The volume of one average shortboard is equal to 940 single-use plastic shopping bags.

If you’re heading out to the beach from town you’ll go over our little one lane bridge. You have right of way over traffic heading into town. HOWEVER, we locals like to share and that means letting people onto the bridge even if they don’t have the right of way. So if a few cars have gone across the bridge and you see a build up of vehicles on the other side, please be courteous, wait and let them come across.
Please be mindful of what you put down the loo, no wet wipes or nappies, these things have a real possibilty of blocking our wastewater system and can contribute to spills into our precious harbour - we definitly don't want that to happen.
We hope you have a great time!! We locals treat people with respect and appreciate being treated the same way.

SAFE SUMMER RAGLAN Keep yourself, your friends, your family and our community safe this summer The Raglan Community House wants everyone to enjoy a happy and safe holiday here in our beautiful community. Raglan will be busy with lots of people and traffic. Be courteous! Relax! Stay chilled!
KEEP SAFE AROUND ALCOHOL
Raglan has a liquor ban in place in the whole Raglan district from 23 December to 6 Jan. Remember, there is a liquor ban in place all year round within the CBD. The legal purchase age is 18 years. Many of our licensed outlets will ask for ID if you look under 30 years so make sure you have either your passport, 18+ card or NZ Driver’s Licence. No valid ID. No alcohol. Be a LEGEND. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t let others drink and drive. We don’t have a night-time taxi service in Raglan so make sure you have a sober driver or check with the licensed premise to see if they have transport available—before you start drinking! Don’t leave your drink or your wallet/bag unattended in bars/clubs. Don’t combine alcohol and water based activities—alcohol and the ocean are not good companions. Don’t drink and fry and keep looking when you’re cooking! Don’t supply alcohol to the under 18s unless you are their legal parent or guardian or have the express consent of their parent or guardian. And make sure you keep young people safe—look out for them and be a good role model yourself. Make sure you eat well before drinking alcohol—chips and dips don’t count!
KEEP YOUR STUFF SAFE
Always lock your accommodation or vehicle. Don’t leave candles/fires unattended. Don’t leave valuables, maps, luggage, wallets, GPS devices, phones etc in parked cars or campervans. Don’t leave your valuables unattended in public places/ beach etc Keep a record of description and serial numbers of your valuables. You can do this online at www.snap.org.nz
KEEP YOURELF SAFE— BE PREPARED

If you’re going out on the water or into bush, check the weather conditions before you go. And take the right equipment and clothing including communications so you can get help. Know your limits—don’t take unnecessary risks. Park in designated car parks/ campsites—make sure its legal. Download this free app—

Global superstar drum and bass act Concord Dawn will be playing outside with MC Rolex. We also have a wee surprise in Oz rapper Tom Francis and his crew. Inside, we will have the best DJ in the Waikato, Ric Rush, running the show. aglan Sunday Sessions at the Yot Club are the sound of summer, bringing festivity, top quality music and contagious “good vibes” to the heart of the village! The sessions, which have been running for six years and are growing strong, have become an iconic event that is well recognised both nationally and internationally. Thanks to great hosts and an amazing vibe, the momentum will keep growing! This season started with a real “Big Bang”, and artists are lining up to showcase yet another notorious summer of music, with a little something to please everyone! Stephen Reid, aka Jamin-I, Sunday Session’s founder and host, aims to keep up the positivity and keep on attracting top quality acts for the people of Raglan. “I just love music and love being able to bring renowned artists to come and play for us all. Without the sessions, a lot of them would usually be impossible to get to perform in such a small village. What tops it up for me is the positive vibe in the yard. It’s rare to see people of all ages, nationalities and walks of life celebrating together, big smiles week in week out! It’s special.” So come one, come all, and make your summer memorable! Enjoy great music, cold drinks in the sunshine and celebrate with family and friends! But, beware, it does get a little rowdy as the sun goes down therefore it’s R18 after 7pm. To find out about up-and-coming artists follow Raglan Sunday Sessions on Facebook and Instagram. Catch you in the Yard! Sunday Sessions are at the Yot Club, free from 4.20pm, cover charge after 7pm. Food in the yard and drink specials. R18 after 7pm.

Shapeshifter members Sambora and Diggs and focus on the more soulful aspects of drum and bass. Another Monster of Rock comes to town on Friday, January 6. Jon Toogood is the lead singer of Shihad, mainstay of the Adults and an allround GC! He is touring his critically acclaimed acoustic show featuring Shihad songs, influences and straight-out hilarious anecdotes and banter. Tickets can be bought online and at the venue. This show will be starting early and is outside. From 9.30pm we will be running a new door and have DJ Mark Williams, aka Slave, aka Log Cabin, from Base FM, running the show with support from Neck of The Woods’ main man, Hudge. Saturday, January 7, sees the return of one of our favourites, The Waikato’s own Knights of the Dub Table. These guys always pack out the Yotty. Expect nothing less here. Our silly season concludes on Sunday, January 8, with another Sunday Session, this one featuring Such and Such, aka Ric Rush and Sean Murray. As always, the lineup will be complemented with local talent, starts at 4.20pm, with a door charge from 7pm. Inside at 10, and, of course, great food. After a wee break we are straight back into it, with newly minted local Cian DJing on the 13th and local funksters Mighty Mighty bringing their raucous funk soul show to the Yotty on Saturday, the 14th. As always, Mighty Mighty will be supported by B Rex. The Sunday Session on the 15th will be headlined, inside, by an international touring band that has become a Raglan favourite. The Yotty will not be open on Friday, January 20, and Saturday the 21st to allow staff to get their rinse on at Soundsplash. However, we will be hosting the after party on the 22nd without assorted guests from the festival, and will be open on the 19th with Soundsplash artist Lime Cordial and, hopefully, on the 18th as well with a Soundsplash-affiliated act. Finally, the last weekend in January is Auckland Anniversary weekend and we have a full “internatty” lineup. Friday has Australian dub funk outfit Dubaray, Saturday brings reggae superstar Mike Love, while the Sunday Session brings London Superstar DJ Norman Jay MBE to town. Hopefully, there is something for everyone at the Yotty this summer!
