arking restrictions are in place in the Raglan area daily and extend to 24 hours a day in some respects (yellow lines, bus stops, flush medians, double parking etc).

If you do park in anyone of these places you run the risk of receiving an infringement notice (fine). Between Police and Council staff, enforcement is carried out. Far too many infringement notices were issued this year and seemed to come as a surprise for many.

Just because someone else parks like that doesn’t make it legal, it just means you both receive infringements. If you do receive a ticket, keep in mind council staff are doing their job and do not have to tolerate verbal abuse because you have made the decision to park there. Additionally, expect enforcement staff to be working when there are major events on, this is part of the traffic management strategy to ensure that there is no unnecessary congestion or risk to pedestrians due to unsafe or inconsiderate parking.

A friendly reminder to you keyboard warriors and freelance journalists; that while you’re entitled to film anything in a public place, posting videos of incidents including assaults, thefts or driving matters can hinder Police operations and / or cause people to become enraged and others to take it upon themselves to “deal” with

someone they deem to be an offender.

This is often made worse in a small town where everyone knows each other. Incidents require a balanced approach and a fair assessment. If you happen to video an incident, consider giving the footage to police in the first instance so we can not only build a picture of what is going on but ensure that everyone involved gets a fair trial.

Be cautious when posting to social media, ask yourself what I am trying to achieve and will I achieve it, or will I make matters worse or be visited by police.

Police were pleased with the crowd behaviour at the Soundsplash event this year. There were only minor matters to deal with and the number of intoxicated people that need Police or medical attention was lower than previous years events.

Traffic Management worked better this year and the bus system was more efficient at transferring patrons once they had checked in at the Airfield on Friday. Some traffic congestion was experienced as event goers and their families packed up and left on Sunday, but drivers seemed to understand that no-one was going to get anywhere in a hurry and were well behaved and patient when sharing the road.

n explosive final day of the 2024 National Surfing Championships has seen a young star emerge in the Women’s Division with 15-year-old Maya Mateja (Rag) stunning the field to win the Open Women’s title.

Taranaki surfer Daniel Farr also claimed his second national title by the closest margin in the history of the event.

The final day of the event was played out on a true ‘Dunner Stunner’ day earlier this month with 30 degree plus temperatures and clean 1.0m waves bringing a big crowd to the beach to watch proceedings.

Maya Mateja stunned the field of surfers in the Open Women’s Division to claim the title, the third youngest surfer to do so. Mateja finished with a 12.90 point heat total for the win.

“I prepared for this event to win but all the girls were ripping and I honestly didn’t know whether I was capable,” said the young surfer.

Mateja first got a sniff of the title when she posted a 7.10 point ride to get close to Christchurch surfer Estella Hungerford who got off to an early start with a 6.9 point ride.

“I thought that was a good score and maybe I can do it,” she said. Then Mateja added a 5.80-point ride to jump Hungerford for first.

“I started to get nervous then, but the ocean went quiet. I could hear my friends screaming from the shore. I am so happy that I am at this level,” said the Raglan surfer who was at the event with her brother and friends. “The first thing I did was talk

Hungerford finished the final in second place, her career best result. 13-year-old Alani Morse (Rag) finished in third place with Brie Bennett (Rag) in fourth place.

Over in the Mens' Division, Farr posted a 16.50 point heat total to claim the title.

The 24-year-old tied with Piha surfer Dune Kennings but won by way of having the highest single wave score of a 9.0 vs Kennings 8.5 point ride.

“Yeah that was an intense final. What a way to win it,” said Farr almost in disbelief at his win.

“When I got that 9.0 point ride, I was extremely stoked, I landed that last turn and I knew I needed to. It was a good score,” added Farr who held the lead at that point.

“I was happy with a nine but to see Dune come out with two 8.5 point rides and hearing that for the last seven or eight minutes of the final was nerve wracking. It just made me nervous and I was stressing out but it worked out in my favour by the end of the final,” he added.

Farr’s title is his second, the first coming in 2022 at Westport. Farr becomes the eleventh surfer in the 61-year history of the event to claim more than one title.

“I said before I came down here, talking to my mates and family ‘shall we go

number two’ and it happened. It worked out in my favour, I got the right waves and God blessed me with the ability to surf well on them. To make it two is unreal,” said an emotional Farr.

Finishing in third today was eight-time champion Billy Stairmand (Rag) who could not find a rhythm with the ocean and Caleb Cutmore (Rag) finished in fourth place.

Earlier in the day Kennings and Cutmore eliminated Elliot Paerata-Reid (Piha) and Dunedin’s final hope – Reuben Peyroux. In the second semi-final Stairmand and Farr eliminated Taylor Hutchison (Rag) and Spencer Rowson (Tara).

In the Women’s Division Morse and Bennett defeated Saffi Vette (Gis) and Jaya Reardon (Dun) in the first semi-final and Mateja and Hungerford defeated the Piha duo Leia Millar and Liv Haysom.

The boardrider club title went to Raglan’s Point Boardriders.

The Volkswagen Highest Single Wave Score of the Day went to Open Men’s Division winner Daniel Farr for his 9.0 point ride in the final of the event.

Whaingaroa Harbour Care closure a wake-up call

Fred Lichtwark fears 30 years worth of Whaingaroa Harbour Care gains will be lost.

I

t’s a bitter sweet time for Fred Lichtwark as the organisation he’s fronted for nigh on 30 years closed its doors in late January.

“I was a diver and we had only about a week to 10 days every year where visibility was good enough that you could actually see more than a metre. And every time it rained, yeah, it was just mud.”

The last seed has been germinated, the last tree planted and Whaingaroa Harbour Care is no more.

Now he fears many of the gains made over the last 30 years are being lost. He says the environment is once again in decline – for a number of reasons - and the closure of Harbour Care should be a wake-up call for the community.

What started when Fred placed a small ad in the local paper in 1995 - lamenting the state of the harbour – grew into a world-leading environmental restoration project.

The work of Whaingaroa Harbour Care became the focus of international studies, a blueprint for other communities throughout Aotearoa and led to the Whaingaroa Harbour becoming one of the cleanest in the country.

Around 2.5million trees have been planted in the harbour environs and Fred says it’s immensely satisfying to see the changes that have taken place over the years.

“Yeah, proud as hell to be able to change an entire landscape within a catchment, you know. It was amazing, and we started this before anyone was doing it in the whole country. We are world leading as a Harbour Care group.”

Wainui Reserve, where the first Harbour Care trees were planted, was just bare land, with streams and wetlands ruined by stock, he says.

The large stretches of seagrass evident throughout the harbour today were largely non-existent and at Manu Bay “when you looked down from the top, it was all cows.

There was no vegetation, there was nothing,” Fred says.

“That was one of the first jobs we did. We got rid of the cows, put hay bales all along the slips and revegetated it. And now look at it.”

Inside the harbour, the work of Harbour Care staff and volunteers means there’s a good chance you can catch a few decent snapper; a far cry from the early days.

“You know the fishery back then; we had to close down the fishing competitions in the harbour because the winning fish in the last competition was an undersized snapper.

There were eels and bugger all of anything else.

“You couldn't get a stronger advocate for Raglan or for the environment than me but we're going backwards. Raglan is now on the decline again. Things are slipping,” he says. Before and after planting the harbour edge.

“It’s changed that much. When we first started Harbour Care, we had the commercial fishers Hartstone Fisheries, at the nursery.

We had barbecues with fish from them. The guy from the quarry, he used to bring out truckloads of metal for our road, and all free.

The community was there, helping growing plants, doing stuff and they’ve dwindled away. And then come the election, I got 1000 less votes.”

Care is a tipping point for environmental decline in Raglan, particularly with climate change making it even harder to fight back.

“The problem now is in germinating mānuka seed at the nursery. Before, it would grow like weeds but we had to reseed three times over the last four or five years because of the heat and humidity, the climate’s changed that much. You're getting funguses and humidity diseases. And you go up the harbour now on an incoming tide at 3pm, the water is that hot it’s cooking. At the 2022 Waikato Regional Council elections, Fred – who had served two terms – missed re-election by 1321 votes to Pamela Storey and Noel Smith.

Alongside those challenges, Fred says anyone taking up the fight to reverse the current environmental decline has to take the community with them, particularly with many Raglan businesses reliant on a clean and healthy environment.

Fred says there’re several reasons Harbour Care has closed, some are what he sees as the privatisation of the work Harbour Care used to carry out, with outside organisations - and plants - being brought into the town.

“You can't live without a healthy environment. There's no economy without a healthy environment.”

But we are not without hope, albeit not much, he reckons.

“There's no pride in having somebody else do that work on your whenua, there’s no pride in place.”

“Raglan’s proved it can be done. We've been to rock bottom and we’ve come back. But you’ve got to be strong and the community’s got to listen. But is our community able to support them? Is the council going to support them?”

Fred doesn’t have much hope either question will receive a positive answer so it’s no surprise he’s angry and bitter, but overwhelmingly, the glisten in his eye shows how sad he is about the closure of an organisation he’s so passionate about and one that’s achieved so much yet had so much more to do.

“What a waste, when I’ve put so much in and offered so much, because it's been so positive, you know. Incredibly proud to see what was one of the dirtiest harbours become one of the cleanest.

“The mistake, I think, was actually becoming a politician.”

re you an environmental group or have an interest in sustainable actions that make a difference? The Raglan Film Festival can provide a platform for you to document and record your story for sharing to a wider audience and we would LOVE to hear from you!

With new funding support received from Raglan Food Co. we are looking to support, encourage and actively engage key community groups who are doing ‘good and great’ things in our community. We would love to have films that tell a story to raise awareness and further profile the important mahi which supports our environmental & sustainable community infrastructure here in Whaingaroa Raglan.

We also have lots in store for emerging, new and experienced film makers planned over the month of February. We are excited to have two workshops coming up to help hone your film making skills. Jacqueline, Film Festival Coordinator says ‘we are extremely fortunate to have workshop leaders of the calibre of Matt Hicks and Michael Bennet visit Raglan to share their film making skills and knowledge with our community’

Michael Bennet (Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Whakaue) is a screenwriter and Director. Michael’s short films and feature films have screened and won awards internationally, including at Cannes, Toronto, Berlin, Locarno, New York and London.

Our first workshop ‘Producing Films. What I’ve learnt so far’ presented by Matt Hicks is scheduled for Saturday 10th February. Matt is a Waikato based writer/producer/director/ actor best known as the Producer of Waikato indie feature ‘Home Kills’ (which premiered at the 2023 NZIFF) and the forthcoming indie feature ‘The Tavern’. Matt’s workshop will detail the highs and lows he’s experienced making low budget features in an honest, warts and all fashion. In the workshop, Matt will cover his journey from making YouTube videos with friends to producing feature length films. The course will cover many topics including writing scripts/ pitching/ preproduction/ post-production. The course promises to be raw, honest and practical with lessons applicable to filmmakers of any age/experience.

This is a two-part workshop. Come along for either the morning or afternoon workshop or both.Lunch is provided, and bookings are essential.

Our second workshop on Saturday 17th February will be presented by Michael Bennet (Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Whakaue).

The workshop is a fun, fast-paced tour through the writing toolbox of an acclaimed screenwriter, using short films, music videos and excerpts from great movies to explore the fundamentals of storytelling for the screen. The workshop is suitable for new screenwriters, for artists coming to screenwriting from other disciplines, and for experienced writers in search of a bootcamp refresher.

The workshop will be a fun, fast-paced tour through the writing toolbox of an acclaimed screenwriter, using short films, music videos and excerpts from great movies to explore the fundamentals of storytelling for the screen. Employment Law Update: Changes to 90-Day Trial Periods

Raglan mushroom farm launches brain-boosting supplements

ollowing legislation changes in December 2023, employers of all sizes are legally allowed to use trial periods again.

Common pitfalls Some of the most common reasons for trial periods being deemed to be invalid and termination resulting in an unjustified dismissal claim include:

Trial periods (if introduced legally) allow employers to terminate employment within the initial 90 days without facing personal grievance claims for unjustified dismissal.

However, while this flexibility is advantageous for employers, trial periods have faced strict interpretation, which often results in employers being held liable for errors in their implementation. For this reason it is important that employers are aware of those legal requirements in order to avoid pitfalls and liabilities.

• An employee has worked for the employer previously.

• The employee was informed about the 90-day trial period after they accepted a verbal or written offer of employment.

• The employee was not given a written employment agreement.

• The wording of an employment agreement does not comply with section 67A of the Employment Relations Act. • The employee was not advised they were entitled to seek independent advice about the agreement and given a reasonable opportunity for that to happen (in breach of s63A of the Employment Relations Act).

What are the legal requirements?

The foundation for a legally sound trial period lies in Sections 67A and 67B of the Employment Relations Act 2000: 1. Applicability to New Employees: Trial periods are exclusive to new hires, and employers must confirm there are no prior employment relationships.

• The employee did not sign the employment agreement, or, did not sign the agreement until after starting work.

2. Written Agreement: A valid trial period must be included in the employment agreement and be explicitly agreed upon and signed in writing before the employee starts work.

• The employer gave notice after 90 days.

• The employment agreement referred to a trial period of 3 months, not 90 days and notice of dismissal was given at 3 months, which was 91 days and therefore fell outside the 90 day statutory timeframe.

3. Key Terms Inclusion: The employment agreement must explicitly state the trial period terms, including the right to dismiss within the first 90 days without the possibility of a personal grievance claim.

• The employment agreement referred to a probationary period not trial period. (Language matters, these are not the same).

4. Notice Period: A distinct notice period must be included in the agreement, separate from the general termination provision.

Given this significant legislative change, it is an opportune time for all employers to be reviewing their employment agreements to incorporate the use of trial periods and to ensure the clause is legally compliant. 5. Employee Awareness: Employees should be informed in writing of their right to seek independent advice, with a reasonable opportunity provided to obtain that advice.

aglan mushroom farm, Mushrooms by the Sea, well-known for its gourmet mushrooms, has embarked on an ambitious new venture in the world of mushroom supplements. The farm's new venture, Mynd, aims to change New Zealand’s mushroom supplement industry with native New Zealand varieties.

Mynd, born out of four years of meticulous research and cultivation by Mushrooms by the Sea, wants to help move New Zealand’s mushroom industry forward. The company's co-founder, Sean Mills, expresses his enthusiasm for Mynd, stating, "Four years of growing and studying New Zealand medicinal mushrooms has led to Mynd, our new venture, offering native New Zealand mushroom supplements—proudly grown in New Zealand."

According to Mills, the mushroom supplements industry has seen rapid growth globally, but in New Zealand, 99% of products are imported from overseas. Mynd aims to change this by offering a local alternative, free from potential contaminants associated with overseas cultivation practices.

The shift from gourmet mushrooms to mushroom supplements is also driven by a desire to provide a natural alternative for brain health and cognition. “Our audience ranges from those hoping to enhance productivity and creativity in their daily work, all the way to those focusing on recovery from brain injury or trauma and want to escape pharmaceuticals”, says Mills.

Mynd’s first product, New Zealand Lion's Mane (Pekepeke-Kiore), is a natural mushroom supplement for brain health and performance, referred to as the "Smart Mushroom." It is cousin to the international species of Lion’s Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) and has been independently tested by

government research agency Callaghan Innovation.

Results indicate the presence of bioactive compounds Erinacines and Hericenones, the same two bioactive compounds that are responsible for its cousin’s brain function and health benefits.

The venture aligns with the emerging bioeconomy opportunities identified by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE). Native NZ medicinal mushrooms are recognised as a significant opportunity in the country's bioeconomic future.

The global medicinal mushroom market was valued at $3.5 billion in 2022 and continues to grow.

The shift from gourmet to medicinal mushrooms may have opened a door of many possibilities for both Mynd and New Zealand’s mushroom industry. As Mynd takes its roots in the fertile grounds of Raglan, one can't help but be intrigued by the potential benefits of New Zealand's native mushrooms.

An advocate of human rights for Palestine took up a lone, but central position in the Bow Street roundabout.

he median strip of Bow Street, Raglan offered welcome shade to the half-dozen who hosted an Information and Ceasefire Petition table to mark the Global Day of Action for Palestine on Saturday, January 13.

Cooling watermelon slices were also on offer to those who stopped to chat from midmorning to noon. Kate Hayward, a resident

of Raglan (on and off) for over 30 years organised the petition table.

“There are quite a few Raglan people who make the trip to Hamilton to attend Saturday Palestine solidarity rallies,” says Hayward.

“I thought folks would appreciate being able to do something to support the children of Gaza right here in Whaaingaroa.”

s the new year kicks off, the Karioi Project team are relieved to have made it through another busy ōi season, getting six new ōi chicks to the stage where they can safely leave

Despite a few challenges, the ōi population which nest in burrows around the coastline of Whāingaroa is growing slowly but surely with the help of volunteers and the local community.

Each week over the breeding season - which runs from May to December - a dedicated team of ‘burrow buddies’ visit the burrows to monitor the bird’s activity and respond to predator threats.

Seabird ranger Georgia Cummings leads the programme and checks the 24-hour field cameras near the burrows.

“We started the season with a good amount of activity and adult ōi regularly visiting burrows and laying eggs, but unfortunately as the season progressed we had a notable fall off in activity including quite a few abandoned eggs,” Georgia says.

“Despite these setbacks, we ended up with six ōi chicks fledging from the burrows.”

“A highlight for me was seeing our 50th chick fledge - a big milestone for these seabirds and something we’ve been

working towards over the past ten years,” Georgia says.

“I love getting up close and personal with ōi chicks while helping with banding and it feels really rewarding knowing our population here in Whāingaroa is growing – we’re on the right track,” she says.

The resilient chicks who survived to fledge will head to sea for approximately seven years before coming back to their natal colonies to pair and breed. During this time they roam thousands of kilometres, mainly staying in the Tasman Sea and the Australian coast, but also north into the Coral Sea. “The next step for our team is maintaining and extending our trapping and bait station network so we can better protect next season's chicks,” says Georgia.

Thanks to long-term monitoring and intensive predator control, 53 ōi chicks have fledged from Karioi in the past six years.

This result is a testimony to a community that has come together and made a real difference to a vulnerable bird species and a threatened ecosystem.

Māui Dolphin Day is a collaborative community festival which highlights the endangered Popoto/Māui Dolphin, the importance of our marine environment and our community's creative spirit. The first Māui Dolphin Day was in 2004 - that’s 20 years ago!

Throughout the event, there will be live entertainment on stage, activities and performances around the site, food stalls fundraising for community groups, information from different nationwide organisations, ending with the impressive, hilarious, “fall-aparty” Recycled Raft Race.

Māui dolphins are the smallest out of the 30 identified dolphin species in the world's oceans. Raglan is known for its close connection to this dolphin, we’re right in the middle of their limited range - the Whāingaroa catchment flows into the west coast waters which are home to the Māui Dolphin. In the 1970s, it’s estimated there were around 1,600 Māui dolphins, now there is an estimated population of only 48-64 left. Māui dolphins are endemic to Aotearoa, and they should be treated no differently to the more effectively protected endemic species such as the iconic Kiwi. Most of the Māui Dolphins threats are human induced and its survival depends on how our coastal communities change our behaviour to reduce these threats and bring back our iconic dolphin. The focus of Māui Dolphin Day is to share the current situation for the dolphin, what’s next in terms of its recovery plan and what coastal communities like ours can do to save and protect them and more widely our marine environment.

aglan is set to host a banging Sunday Session this Auckland Anniversary Weekend, featuring the illustrious DJ Colleen Cosmo Murphy hailing from the U.S.A. and the distinguished London-based Trojan Sound System with Selector Daddy Ad. As testimonials go, this one provided by Vinyl Factory when discussing Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy takes some beating: “The biggest heroes of the underground typically wouldn’t describe themselves as such. Frankie Knuckles, Kelli Hand, Andrew Weatherall...all possessed a humility that made them even more honourable and endearing, and they went about their business with little regard for fame and a distaste for industry bullshit. Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy falls firmly into this category.”

But really, anyone who has followed Murphy’s endlessly fascinating life in music shouldn’t be surprised to see her lauded in such terms. She is – much like the electronic totems she’s compared to above – a lifer: someone that has dedicated every inch of her soul and being to the pursuit of music. As such, she’s been guided by an array of motivations.

Whether she’s DJing at her Love Dancin’ sound system at Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here festival, musically hosting the Loft parties, curating a Classic Album Sundays event at the Royal Albert Hall, presenting her weekly Balearic Breakfast radio show or remixing Róisín Murphy there’s always an abundance of impulses bubbling away. There’s the desire to entertain – to put a smile on people’s faces; a need to curate – to give the audience more than just a song; and an extension of this is education. Not in any dictatorial fashion, it’s more about turning people on to new sounds, new ways of thinking, maybe even new ways of living.

Originally from Massachusetts via New York City and now in London, she started out collecting classic rock and pop albums, moved on to punk and dance music, and began her own radio show in high school.

She then started spinning records and was mentored by David Mancuso, known for his seminal parties at The Loft in NYC. A highly respected and experienced musical selector and curator, she is an authority on music, sound and the vinyl renaissance Daddy Ad: Trojan Sound System (UK) Reformed in 2004, London based Trojan Sound System are an institution in Sound System culture, representing the most seminal reggae and ska record label in history.

Daddy Ad hails from the Roots and Reality Sound System, which he originally founded with Earl Gateshead before re-founding Trojan Sound System together with Trojan Records. He has worked with legends including; Eek-A-Mouse, Tappa Zukie, Dennis Alcapone and Horace Andy amongst many others, and has always pushed for new sounds and acts to break through. Ad believes many contemporary forms of music are direct descendants of reggae and its varied sub-genres and his mission has been to cross reggae music and culture back into contemporary clubs and festivals, which they successfully achieved. His experience as a drummer and audiophile has led Ad in a direction to be responsible for the crew’s FXs, mixing and trademark Hi-fi sound.

Legendary recording artists including Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Dr Alimantado, Tippa Irie, Big Youth, Ranking Joe, Dawn Penn, Dillinger & Dennis Alcapone have all worked with the Trojan Sound team.

The DeSotos make their debut in Raglan

he DeSotos are a leading New Zealand Americana roots act and released their first album 'Cross Your Heart' to great acclaim back in 2008, with it being chosen as NZ Album of the Year by the then National Radio music reviewer Manu Taylor. It went on to become the soundtrack to TVNZ's 'South' TV series.

This album was followed up by 2011's Your Highway for Tonight, described by Tony Moon of the Weekend Sun, Tauranga as "New Zealand music at its best".

Both these albums featured cameo appearances by local legend Midge Marsden on the blues harp, and keyboard player Ron Stevens - also a Raglan local.

In 2023 the band acquired the services of legendary drummer Greg Tell on the skins. L A born, Greg has a massive international music CV including performing live with Renee Geyer for many years, and recording four albums with her.

The DeSotos tour regularly and performed at Tauranga's 60th Anniversary National Jazz Festival in April 2023 amongst a bunch of other concerts and shows, but this will be their first time performing in Raglan.

Lead singer and guitarist Paul Gurney released his new album 'Blue Horizon' in late 2022 which went on to become the most-played NZ album on international roots radio stations for five weeks in April / May 2023.

He performed showcases in Nashville and other international dates in September 2023 on the back of the album's success.

With a classic line-up of guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, The DeSotos perform an eclectic show that touches on Americana, country rock and blues, and is defined by strong vocals and top musicianship.

As well as their original material they play selected covers from some of their favourite artists including Tom Petty, Neil Young and the Allman Brothers Band.

The band will be back in the studio in 2024, and are looking forward to rocking their first Raglan show at The Yard on February 2nd! Tickets are available through Eventfinda or at the door.

Controlled purchase operation undertaken in Raglan supplied by Raglan Police

A

controlled purchase operation was undertaken in the Raglan Area in December 2023 checking licensed premises’ compliance with the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 when selling alcohol. The vast majority of licensed premises performed well compared to previous operations held in the last five years.

The joint Waikato Police, Te Whatu Ora (Ministry of Health) and Waikato District Councils’ liquor licensing operation checked a total of 13 licensed premises in the greater Raglan Area.

Of the 13 licensed premises checked – only one failed by selling or supplying alcohol to

under-aged persons. Senior Sergeant David Hall stated that “the result of the operation was better than previously experienced and showed a willingness by On, Off and Club licence operators to continually assess and improve their systems and training”.

Selling alcohol to under-age people or allowing already intoxicated people onto premises and continuing to serve alcohol to them, have great potential to cause alcohol related harm in our communities, Senior Sergeant Hall said.

Alcohol can have a damaging effect on our youth, affecting their developing brain and behaviour that can result in health issues later in life or making poor decisions. We

know that alcohol affect’s people’s decision making, reflexes and responses making them a risk to themselves and others. They are more likely to become a victim of trips, falls or crashes and when a decision is made to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, this can then become deadly.

Police are often called to family harm matters, public disorder, or road crashes where alcohol is too often a contributing factor. Alcohol harm is a significant factor affecting hospital emergency resources throughout the country. Hospital beds are needlessly taken up by people making poor decisions while consuming alcohol, and that directly affects people that need treatment for other illnesses who are made to wait.

Alcohol Healthwatch data shows that 78 per cent of the New Zealand population drink alcohol to some degree. “We will always have alcohol in our communities,” Senior Sergeant Hall said, “we just need to be smarter about reducing the risk associated with the manner in which we drink, and planning before we party.”

The Future Proof Strategy is a 30-year growth management and implementation plan for the Hamilton, Waipā, Waikato and Matamata-Piako sub-region. The Strategy is essential to managing growth in a staged and co-ordinated way while addressing complex planning issues.

The Strategy incorporates seven transformational moves for change: • Supporting iwi aspirations • Putting our rivers at the heart of planning • A comprehensive and fundamental evolution of our transport system • A vibrant metro core and lively metropolitan and town centres • Strong and productive economic corridors • Thriving, resilient communities and neighbourhoods • Water wise and water sensitive communities The Future Proof Strategy was updated in 2022 to include the Hamilton to Auckland (H2A) Corridor Plan and the Hamilton-Waikato Metropolitan Spatial Plan.

What’s happening now We have some further updates to the Strategy. In the 2024 version we have made minor adjustments to: • implement the provisions of the National Policy Statement on Urban Development, including meeting the requirements of a Future Development Strategy; • integrate Matamata-Piako as a partner to Future Proof; • recognise the importance of our sub-region’s connection to Tauranga; and • integrate our recently completed business cases for waste water and transport needs over the next thirty years.

The Future Proof Strategy has been updated and the Draft Strategy is now open for consultation.

Notice of herbicide spraying Waikato Regional Council advises that under Resource Consent 124871 spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months.

Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan and include (but are not limited to): alligator weed, Manchurian wild rice, sagittaria, Senegal tea, spartina and yellow flag iris. Herbicides to be used are haloxyfop, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr. Application method is location dependent and may be by helicopter, gun and hose, mistblower or knapsack.
