Gym owner muscles in on the bodybuilding world

When it comes to understanding the human physique Raglan Gym owner Amber Beaumont doesn’t just talk the talk. Amber has spent a gruelling year training as a bodybuilder and all her hard work paid off last weekend when she won Gold at the NZ International Federation of Bodybuilding National Champs. Amber was competing in the novice women over 55kg physique category. Just a week earlier she took second place in the Waikato and Coromandel Championships, her first ever bodybuilding competition, and it was that result that enabled her to go through to the Nationals.

Amber is understandably delighted with her medals but admits that the many hours of training and preparation haven’t been easy. “I’m blown away by my results,” she says. “But it’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”

Amber started preparing for the Waikato and Coromandel Championships around 12 months ago. At first training took up around 12 hours a week and she had to follow a nutritional plan. She used a trainer, Brian McFarlane, a former Mr NZ who’s based in Hamilton, to help plan her schedule. “He was awesome,” she says. “I couldn’t have done it without him.”

Bodybuilders aim to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass. Amber started out with around 22% body fat and managed to drop this to 12% before the Waikato competition. “You actually put on weight at the start,” she explains.

“When you want to gain muscle you need ample fat around the joints to protect them. Then about 12 week away from the event you aim to burn as much body fat as you can.”

So ten weeks out from the competition Amber’s training stepped up several gears. She now had to find time to fit in 20 hours a week training which involved two hours of cardio exercise a day (one in the morning and one in the evening) and four weight training sessions a week. Her eating plan also became more stringent. http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=raglan The only carbohydrates allowed were rolled oats and brown rice and her evening meal had to be carb free. “It was fish and vegetables or prawns and vegetables,” she recalls. “Following the eating plan was the hardest part. That and lack of sleep at night because of hunger pains.”

Drilling off Raglan fuels no concern Sydney-based Origin Energy is telling boats to stay half a kilometre clear of the semi submersible rig Kan Tan V1 when it drills two exploration wells, Korimako-1 and Tarapunga-1, 40 nautical miles off the coast this and next month.

But Raglan Sport Fishing Club secretary Sheryl Hart has no worries so long as the drilling’s done in the “safest possible way”, and points out 40 nautical miles is a long way offshore as far as local fishing is concerned. “We (boaties) rarely go there,” she says.

Meanwhile Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) local spokesman and chair Stephen Frew is happy the exploratory drilling will have “negligible impact”.

Origin Energy’s permits are for an area known as the Northern Taranaki/Northland Basin, which has the Raglan coast pretty much at its centre.

However Sheryl, who’s also NZ Recreational Fishing Council secretary, stresses that “pretty stringent” controls are in place nationwide to cover exploratory

An Australian energy giant is about to drill for oil off Raglan – but local environmentalists are not bothered about it and neither are recreational fishers despite a warning they should stay well away.

drilling which operates within a water depth of 2000 feet and drills to a maximum of 25,000 feet.

All drilling waste for instance must be taken to shore for proper disposal, she says, and drilling rigs must carry the prerequisite safety devices to soak up oil spills should there be any.

“We hope the greater good outweighs the risks,” she says to suggestions oil drilling poses unnecessary threats. “If you don’t want drilling for oil, best you don’t drive your car and just stay at home.”

Stephen says that with the drilling being undertaken such a long way offshore, any effects will be “very localised” and impact on only a couple of hundred square metres.

Seabed mining by contrast, he points out, contributes to hundreds of square kilometres losing almost total land and marine biodiversity.

While Stephen admits that KASM remains watchful, he believes the current exploration is totally “professional”.

He also points to a “robust” regulatory regime which, he says, has ensured that there have been no major impacts to date.

The Kan Tan V1 rig, operated by the Sinopecstar Petroleum Company, has been drilling at various locations around the country for the past few months and will take about 40 days to complete its work out from Raglan.

Before coming to New Zealand it was in service in the North Sea, the UK, Trinidad, Tobago and Australia.

The drilling will help Origin Energy – formed out of the demerger of Australian conglomerate Boral Ltd in 2000, and which has about 2400 staff – find out if there are commercially recoverable reserves of gas or oil offshore.

Off Road Raglan – this weekend On Saturday Raglan will host the Off Road Raglan Challenge for its second year running, competitors will kayak, run and mountain bike around our beautiful landscape.

‘Dream’ win spurs Billy on in dream tour quest Top Raglan surfer Billy Stairmand reckons the win of his life recently in Spain – where he pulled off the ASP’s Pantin Classic, pocketing more than $20,000 for the effort – is a dream come true.

It’s “pretty crazy”, he says of his unexpected victory, pointing out he’s never won more than three grand before.

Despite his windfall, Billy didn’t splash out. The 21-year-old from Lily Street is trying to save up for a house, and apart from covering costs has invested the winnings.

And he says he’ll buy one day in Raglan, the town where he’s ridden the waves since he was a kid – one who from a distance could sometimes be mistaken for the girl next door with his then trademark long blond locks flying.

Nowadays it’s shorter-haired, grownup Billy, wearing cap and sunnies, who’s quite often to be seen around town, perhaps Billy celebrating his big win in 2008, with his brother Reef and sister Zoe cruising on the deck of the Harbour View’s Verandah Bar between surfing stints. Final tally gives Linda seat Final Waikato District Council election results out this week have handed Linda Cole a seat after all on the Raglan Community Board.

The Plunket advocate and Classic Car Festival organiser’s final tally of 474 – up 35 on the election-day count – means she just squeezes out Raglan Information Centre stalwart Noleen McCathie for the sixth seat on the board.

Despite attracting 21 more votes, Noleen misses out by six votes.

Other final figures are 589 for Rodger Gallagher, 559 for Bob MacLeod, 525 for Alan Vink, 482 for Barry Ashby and 481 for Terry Horn.

Meanwhile in the four-way tussle for Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley has ended up just 23 votes clear of Malibu Hamilton (338 to 315 votes), followed closely by Matt Holl (291) then Alan Vink (238). In the mayoral race, Clint finally lost out to Allan Sanson by 1099 votes.

Introducing Raglan’s NLP trainer

Ever wanted to be more successful in life? Raglan-based Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Trainer Stephanie Philp offers courses and training which can help you do just that. Emma Brooks popped along to Stephanie’s most recent course to find out more.

It’s a smiling, cheery group of people who greet me at the C-Barn one wet and windy lunchtime. They’ve all taken six days out of their lives to attend this course and one in particular has made a momentous effort to be here; Esteban has flown all the way from Colombia.

The course that Stephanie is running today is called MetaMorphosis 202, the second in a three part series of NLP Practitioner Training.

Which brings me onto my first question – just what is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Turns out that’s a hard question to answer in a few words. Stephanie sums it up neatly as a “technology or science for how people achieve success” but it’s clear from the very thick manual that each participant is armed with that the topic is a big one.

“It’s just so huge,” admits Carleen. “It’s about noticing how people organise and accept experiences; a toolbox of techniques for understanding what’s going on in the unconscious.”

Stephanie became an NLP practitioner in 1994 and since 2000 when she became an internationally recognised NLP trainer has trained Practitioners and Master Practitioners.

She now runs her business MetaMorphosis Ltd from Raglan. She offers a range of services including corporate training, courses and presentations.

So what does taking part in one of her courses involve? Carleen and Shahn tell me about some of the different methods involved which include story-telling, feedback sessions, tests and trance. Hang on - trance? “To get us into a relaxed state,” explains Shahn, “because when you’re relaxed you learn more easily.”

So no long, mind-numbing lectures then? They reassure me that all the learning is fun and interactive. “Stephanie’s jokes are the best bit,” says Shahn.

All of those attending this course have different reasons for doing so. In some cases partners have attended similar courses while for Shahn experiencing Stephanie cure her fear of flying using an NLP technique was a big enough motivator to learn more.

Wayne has spent twenty years working with addicts. He says he had always felt there must be a more effective way of working with a group of clients but it wasn’t until he read an article about NLP that something clicked. “It was like finding the Holy Grail,” he says. Since attending his first course Wayne says his training has made a massive difference in his work and he’s had a written letter of commendation from his employer to prove it.

Carleen too has experienced success with NLP techniques. She recently won a gold medal in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the Australian Jiu Jitsu Champs in Melbourne. Her partner, who has also trained with Stephanie, took her through some NLP techniques before the competition.

“I’m convinced that NLP made the difference,” she says.

head home and start putting their new-found techniques to use in their everyday lives. NLP is not limited to the work environment. “If there’s room for growth, then there’s room for change,” says Carleen.

Esteban has the longest journey home. This course has served him two purposes – learning about NLP techniques and also helping to improve his English language skills. So what knowledge will he take back to Colombia with him? “That I have all the resources I need to succeed,” he says.

On the night before competition she finally got her wish. “You have a cheat meal that you’re allowed the night before you compete,” she explains. “It pumps carbs into the muscles and gives you a more defined shape.” Amber was also allowed several glasses of wine – having resisted alcohol entirely during her training she said the combination of wine and burger gave her the best sleep she’d ever had.

Amber says she was very nervous before going on stage. “Backstage is pretty chaotic,” she says. “Everyone is touching up their tan, pumping up in the weights room.” Competitors have to take part in two shows - the morning show which is mainly for the judges and then an evening show which attracts a bigger audience.

Bodybuilders are judged on three elements – symmetry of the body (where the judges are looking for a ‘v’in the body shape created by wide shoulders and a narrow waist), poses and in the night show there is also a dance routine. “You’re on stage trying to tense your muscles the hardest you’ve tensed in your life,” says Amber. “I was shaking.”

Choosing to become a bodybuilder might seem a strange choice for a young woman but for Amber it has simply been a perfect opportunity to learn more about the human body.

“I wanted to feel what it was like to [reduce body fat] to the extreme,” she says. “I’ve picked up a huge amount of tips and training and now, from doing it, I’ve got a lot more empathy.”

So will the world of bodybuilding be seeing more of Amber in the future?

“They reckon you get the bug,” she replies. “But my gut feeling is that this was just a learning thing.”

Kerrianne, 7 years, who looks after Jordie is pleased with the decision to acquire a bunny as a pet as she says that Jordie is lots of fun to play with and will chase her around the lawn. Mum, Polly Jackson explains that if rabbits are handled from a young age they can be affectionate pets and can even be trained to walk with a leash. Jordie however was not handled much as youngster so he is not particularly cuddly but is indeed playful. As a shorthaired rabbit Jordie does not require much grooming except for the odd brush and nail clipping. He has a diet of hay, pellets, cabbage, carrots, lettuce and his all time favourite, dandelion flowers.

Jordie is the Jacksons second bunny as they lost their first due to illness. Polly strongly reccommends the need to get a bunny vaccinated at the vet.

Polly also points out that bunnies are easy pets when wanting to go away as they are quite happy with 3-4 days worth of food.

We are always inundated with homeless kittens why would you want to add to an already hugely overpopulated community?

In the North Island the climate is too mild to kill off the fleas over winter. Although flea numbers are reduced they are still there. Come spring and summer, the flea population explodes and these little critters become a real issue.

Many New Zealanders think of October as being the best time to visit Germany, having heard lurid stories from friends about Oktoberfest.

Now, there’s patriotic attention to a national product for you.

Norman Curtis at the Raglan Club sticks to the October idea, though, and has, for the last 13 years organised a Bavarian Beer Fest in his club. Initially, he felt things were a bit quiet, and needed a rark up: “Any excuse for a party,� was the philosophy. It proved so successful, it has become an annual event on the Sunday of Labour weekend. “We start at three o’clock with an oompah band,� he says. “That goes for three hours. At six thirty we put on hocks and Raglan sauerkraut (made to a very secret recipe), and then there’s a karaoke to follow.

They have seen pictures of wonderfully well-endowed pulchritudinous frauleins carrying handfuls of steins, serious drinkers quaffing foaming ale, and town squares chocker with general revelry.

What they don’t know is that the cunning Germans do not just celebrate their fine product in October, but have a series of beer festivals that occur almost every month from February onwards.

The club does all the catering for the event. The place is decked out to create a suitable atmosphere. Prizes are awarded for people in Bavarian dress, or for winning any of the competitions held through the day.

A commemorative stein is available for those who take quality control seriously. And quality control cannot be rushed, so expect the testing to go on for a fair while into the night.

There is every chance that 250 or so will attend, made up of “members, guests, and affiliated visitors.�

I wish to extend my thanks to the people who voted for me in the recent Raglan Community Board election. Unfortunately I didn’t quite make it - pipped at the post.

The Raglan Community Arts Council seeks expressions of interest from people interested in having a food stall in the new kitchen.
