Yes, I walk into a house, open a door which leads to another door which leads into a cubby hole, through another door etc, until I'm deep inside my brain somewhere. Labyrinth dreams apparently.

Best travelling experience?

A two day dirt bike ride through the jungle in far north Thailand. Pretty unforgettable, thrilling and sore... and when a girl tried to wax my legs with two pieces of string in Cambodia.

If money were no object what frivolous non-essential would you buy for yourself?

I would pay someone heaps of money to follow me around scratching my back and giving me a little head massage.

In another life what career would you have?

Probably be some kind of modern day 'Robin Hood' chick. I’d work for the IRD or MOJ and secretly try to make peoples fines and debts disappear.

Best talent to come out of NZ lately?

I like Kimbra's new stuff.

School bus replica to star at parade

I

n a shed, affectionately know as “The Toolbox”, overlooking the Raglan harbour sits a 1924 school bus, just waiting for its outing at the next New Year’s parade.

Raglan-based restorer Terry Pidduck has spent the last six months building the replica on top of a Ford Model TT truck chassis. The 1924 original, open-sided bus was the first motorised bus in New Zealand.

Three were built by the Department of Education, each with a Ford chassis, and pressed into service in the King Country in the 1920s, when three small country schools were consolidated into one new school at Piopio.

Terry (79) said this meant the 90 country children then had to be transported to Piopio, making history in 1924 as the first children to travel to school on a motorised bus; albeit crammed in, 30 to a bus.

“Not much has changed – we get

complaint now about kids being crammed in,” he joked.

Terry, a mechanic by trade and former garage owner, has had a life-time interest in buses, with wife Bev and him both doing school bus runs from 1959. They were also involved in running bus companies and still have shares in Cambridge Travel Lines.

Bev (77) said the first time she saw Terry and his sister was on a Cambridge bus when they were all children travelling to school together – although Terry reportedly had no recollection of it.

They had both pursued an interest in all sorts of transportation, both old and new – from motorcycles, cars, trucks and motorised bicycles, to a trailer sailer and an aeroplane – and have worked side by side in their workshop.

Bev and Terry took regular jaunts around New Zealand on their Honda Gold Wing motorbikes, riding down to Hokitika just a few weeks ago, and once had a very memorable trip around India on

motorbikes.

They moved to Raglan in 2000: “We built our workshop and [now] we just play with old things,” Terry said.

Now Bev and Terry were on the move again. This time to a retirement village in Hamilton, where they planned to still pursue their motorcycle rambles.

They also were not finished with car and bike restorations and planned to keep visiting their Maungatawhiri Road property to continue their restoration projects.

Two of their four sons had helped on a couple of car restoration projects and would take the 1965 Rambler and 1933 Terraplane Roadster from “The Toolbox”, while Terry and Bev kept the 31-year-old V12 Jaguar.

As for the bus, Terry said it would come out for an airing at displays such as Raglan’s New Year Parade – “we just need to find some kids to put in it” – before being given to the Piopio museum.

New wooden walkway built at beach A group of local kiteboarders has built a sand ladder at the beach by the harbour entrance to help prevent sand dune erosion and burnt feet this summer.

The Raglan Windsports Club started preparing the wooden walkway connecting the popular kiteboarding beach with the Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive carpark a couple of weeks ago.

Club member Mark Duyvesteyn said club members shoveled sand out of the way, then successfully approached the Waikato District Council for the $3000-

The new wooden sand ladder at Raglan’s kite beach will make life much easier for kiteboarders.

4000 funding needed for the materials.

The club held a working bee nearly a fortnight ago and about 15 members pitched in to create the walkway.

Mark said the club was very happy with the result. Members of the public had also commented that it was much easier to get

to the beach now.

It would be easier for kiteboarders to get to the beach with their bulky equipment as well.

Fifty-year friendship to be marked by parade

parade this weekend involving about 50 members of the New Zealand army’s 161 Battery is about an enduring bond between a group of soldiers in Vietnam and a little coastal town back home that befriended them.

This Saturday’s march down Bow Street will commemorate 50 years since Raglan locals first offered their support to RNZA’s 161 Battery, 16 Field Regiment, when it was stationed in Vietnam.

It was reportedly a very unpopular deployment with the New Zealand public, and many of those who served there were not treated well when they returned, which made this relationship even more poignant.

Raglan firefighters initiated a friendship with the Battery 161 artillery sub-unit and locals sent letters, food parcels and other small comforts to members stationed in Vietnam, said Battery Sergeant Major,

Warrant Officer Class Two Richard Theodore.

The Freedom of the City of Raglan charter was awarded to the battery at the end of the conflict. In 1972, the battery also incorporated the panther from Lord Raglan’s coat of arms into its emblem.

WO2 Theodore said the battery arrived in Raglan on Monday to combine five days of leadership training with the exercise, staying at the Poihakena Marae and sampling a range of local adventure activities.

They also planned to link up with the Fire Station for individual activities during the week.

The Raglan Community Board was contributing $1000 to the charter parade, which would see Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson act as Reviewing Officer.

A public artillery display was also planned after the parade at Kopua Domain, which would include a gun detachment,

gun, prediction computer and cam paint stands.

The streets being used for the parade James and Bow Streets and the town end of Wainui Road - will be closed prior to the parade, reopening after it has finished at noon.

• On Saturday, October 11, Battery 161 will march at 11am from James St/Bow St into Wainui Rd for the charter parade to exercise the Freedom of the City of Raglan.

• Afterwards there will be a public artillery display at the Kopua Domain at 1.30-2.30pm.

• This will be followed by a netball and touch rugby game between Raglan and Battery 161 at 2.30pm-5pm at the Raglan rugby grounds.

• In the evening, the Raglan Club will be holding a karaoke competition with the Battery 161 at the club.

Pat Pounds, along with her husband Jack, is a regular user of the community bus. She catches it every Tuesday morning and gets them home in time for lunch.

"We have used it every week. It's absolutely fantastic."

For Pat and Jack, getting to town isn't an easy chore. They both do not drive and Pat said that the convenience of the service meant that she could get to town every week.

"I do have a mobility scooter but it will take two or three trips down town [to do the weekly shop]."

She said more people should take advantage of the service.

"It should be used, there must be many people who are in the same boat," Pat said.

Community House PR advisor Chrissy Hodkinson said that the community bus, which was driven by volunteers, was a collaboration of effort between the

Chrissy said that the Community House hoped that the service would grow, but

that priority would be given to those who needed the service.

"If the bus gets too full, we will give priority to the elderly. If it grows, we could look at adding another run or day."

"It's a work in progress but we really want to encourage people to use it."

Chrissy encouraged those who wished to use the service to contact the Raglan Community House on 825 8142.

"So long as you book by Monday afternoon to allow the drivers to know who they are picking up."

Drivers urged to rest to reduce crash statistics Drivers are being urged to rest and rejuvenate in an effort to reduce crash statistics.

Over the last five years, driver fatigue has been attributed to 54 fatalities and 141 serious injuries in the Waikato region alone.

Waikato District Council road safety staff, Police and Whatawhata Rugby club joined forces to encourage drivers to take a break at a Council led fatigue stop in Whatawhata on Sunday 5 October. The Fatigue stop was one of three held on

SH39 over the snow season targeting those heading to and from Ruapehu.

Waikato District Council Road Safety Coordinator, Megan Jolly, sees the stops as a positive way to engage with motorists.

“It is a great opportunity for us to chat to drivers, offer free refreshments and provide information. It also allows us to collect key data on driver fatigue.”

To date over 500 people have stopped this season, with many in need of a break.

In particular one driver, a tourist, stopped after driving for six hours without a break.

The recommendation is to rest for at least 10 minutes every two hours.

Ms Jolly said drivers were also reminded to catch up on lost sleep before getting behind the wheel, as well as stopping for a power nap if needed. “That was particularly important for those heading to and from ski-fields who were already likely to be tired,” she said.

“It’s pretty simple – just don’t drive tired. If you do, you’re putting yourself and others at risk.”

his Sunday 12th October at 11.30am sees the Open Day for the Raglan Sailing Club’s Learn to Sail (L.T.S.) programme.

The Open Day is a chance for all comers, young and old, to give sailing a try and see whether they want to join the Club and do the L.T.S. sessions for the full season.

Every second weekend from October to March the Sailing Club (R.S.C.) meets at Lorenzen Bay where experienced sailors teach newcomers how to sail in the safe environment of the Bay. If you want to come down for a look and a sail, the Open Day will

be starting at 11.30 from the little yellow house over the causeway on the right in Lorenzen Bay. You don’t need a boat, but please bring warm clothing (plus extra clothes), towels, and a life-jacket if you have one.

You may also want to bring some food and drink. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please be aware that the tide comes in and covers the causeway so park in the car park at the bottom of Lorenzen Bay Rd. Sailing is a fun and exciting way of seeing and enjoying our lovely harbour and the R.S.C. is a fun, social and safe way to try something new.

group of concerned Whaingaroa residents will be rallying together against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), next month, in an effort to stave off what they say is “an attack on New Zealand sovereignty.”

The group met on Monday night at the Raglan Town Hall supper room to discuss the impending rally against the TPPA. The TPPA is a free-trade agreement currently being negotiated between 12 countries along the Pacific Rim including New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

Group member Joan Havemann said that every aspect of the TPPA was concerning, especially the “secrecy of the negotiations” – as the TPPA is being conducted behind closed doors.

Miss Havemann said that every person should be concerned with the effects of the TPPA as it could allow big multi-national corporations to dictate how governments, local and

“It ties the hand of future governments. It will restrict their authority,” she said.

Miss Havemann was referring to one of the most contentious issues relating to the agreement, the possible inclusion of a clause that would allow foreign companies to sue governments if they undertake any action that reduces their profits potentially giving foreign companies

more rights to sue the government than New Zealand companies have.

Miss Havemann believes New Zealanders should be concerned with the TPPA as the cost of medicine, food labelling, local contracts, minimum wage and intellectual rights could also be negatively affected.

The Whaingaroa rally against the TPPA will start at the top of Bow Street on Saturday 8th November at 10am.

‘People trainer’ celebrates 20 years of winning advice

S

he’s not exactly a life coach, more a business mentor – and there’s a few local businesses around who have Stephanie Philp to thank for helping them win awards along the way.

Raglan’s tiny Piwiwiwi campervan rental company – for one – beat the big guys in last year’s online Rankers Awards, and The Herbal Dispensary in Wallis Street won the Waikato Top Shop Award not so long ago. Then there’s Wainui Road businesswoman Katy Armstrong, winner of the 2013 NZIMA Service Award for her boutique immigration consultancy.

All three achievements are testimony in part to good advice from Stephanie, who proudly announced on Facebook recently that this month marked for her a milestone 20 years in business.

It was October 1994 when she cast aside forever what she describes as “the constraints of corporate life”.

“I didn’t have such a great plan,” Stephanie admits now. But she was a “passionate learner” and knew that she wanted to coach people and do some training.

Back then she bore the dubious title of human resources manager, or “wrangler” as she terms it, for Counties Power. But she hated the fact people were becoming less and less important in a strategy-focused world. So she left it all behind to

pursue an interest in training dogs – for competition, film and TV work – and training people to train their dogs.

Dog training led to “people training”, and four years later she set up her own business MetaMorphosis as a certifying teacher of neurolinguistic programming or NLP as it’s known in the industry.

Stephanie – educated in Britain and at Auckland University – was one of the first practitioners in the country after the American programme came to New Zealand, and became so inspired she’s been delivering NLP training courses on both a business and personal level ever since, either in groups or oneon-one.

It’s about people – how we think, behave and learn, she explains of the theory, and how we can change what we do to achieve our life goals.

“Change is not only necessary to life – it is life,” she adds on her website, quoting Future Shock author Alvin Toffler. And Stephanie’s certainly never looked back since her own big career change, going into business for herself.

But she did make another lifechanging decision six years ago to relocate to Raglan, after feeling burnt out back in Auckland “trying to do everything”.

“I wanted to do more writing and less coaching,” Stephanie told the Chronicle recently from the Raglan West home she shares with dog Ragz and a talking parrot which

Besides producing a series of self-help eBooks – written from home and published in her native Britain – Stephanie’s business also regularly brings people to Raglan for training courses. Most often they’re held at the Old School or Sunset Motel, depending on the group, although a workshop next month takes in the “laidback luxury” of Whale Bay’s Waoku Lodge.

Stephanie also coaches locals like Piwiwiwi’s Anna and Niall and

The Herbal Dispensary’s Bronwyn Lowe to move in the direction they want to develop.

“I love it here,” Stephanie enthuses of the town she’s adopted.

“I like the fact there’s a community.”

She believes it’s a nicer learning environment anyway from the Big Smoke, encouraging people to have a better experience while finding ways to progress in life and business.

Stephanie served as chair of Raglan Chamber of Commerce for two years soon after arriving in town, an experience she says

allowed her to get her head around the local scene.

It could be said it’s the head and the mind games that interest her in life. She calls herself head consultant, among other things, on her LinkedIn business profile – liking the play on words.

And the hole in her MetaMorphosis business card is no mistake. After all it’s a (hole)istic business this world of behaviour, human or otherwise, she points out.

Skiing/schooling combo just the ticket Opinion: Outside looking in

T

e Uku snowboarder Flynn Bellerby’s selection last month to train at a worldclass Colorado ski resort next January highlights the southern migration each winter of several Raglan families who find the lure of combining skiing with schooling too hard to resist.

The 15-year-old, who also excelled at the recent school ski champs on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, has headed down country for three seasons now where he first honed his skills at National Park School’s ski academy before completing the latest winter term at Ruapehu College.

And in between, says his mother Sue – who takes time out from running Hidden Valley Luxury Retreat to be with her son in Ohakune for the third term of each school year – Flynn hooked into correspondence while still a Raglan Area School student.

“It’s great for me,” says Sue of the family’s lifestyle choice, “and Flynn absolutely loves it!”

She’s busy now for the school holidays down at Ohakune selling donuts out of a caravan to help raise the $5000 needed for her son to get to Breckenridge Ski Resort in the US, where he’ll snowboard among athletes from around the world.

Sue and husband Frank, who also hits the slopes with his family when he can, say it’s a great opportunity for kids. “It’s good on so many levels,” Sue explains of the camaraderie, the physical demands and the mental endurance.

Another Raglan couple, Joan and Mike Loten, also head down country annually with their three young

children, who learn to ski while attending National Park School for a term.

The school’s “fantastic”, Mike enthuses, and encourages everybody onto the slopes one day a week. But older children like his sons Sam, 9, and George, 8, are now part of the school’s ski academy whose three-day programme is “much more intensive,” he adds, preparing its protégés to race in national competitions like the recent school champs.

Sam and George Loten with their ski champ medals Mike reckons his children are thriving on the experience and get a different perspective on schooling.

Joan stays in rental accommodation for the season – helping out as a volunteer on the school’s ski programme – while Mike, a GP at West Coast Health Clinic, joins them most weekends and holidays.

The arrangement was an “active decision” on their part, he says, chosen over having an annual family holiday.

Raglan bachowner Nicolette Brodnax is another convert to the mix of skiing and schooling as a lifestyle.

Her son Bobby, who’s now 13 and at Hamilton Boys High School, has just won his grand slalom event at the North Island school champs which she attributes to the grounding he got the past two seasons at National Park School.

The presence of Raglan children there, she believes, is “indicative of a mindset” which encourages selfreliance, confidence and discipline.

The lifestyle gives children balance in their sporting and academic aspirations.

Another couple who’ve also had their children at National Park School to take advantage of its skiing programme are Raglan Chronicle owners Dave and Jacqui Smith.

Their daughters Frankie and Coco thrived on a change of scene and the different experience, says Jacqui, "As you would expect an alpine environment can be very challenging so the kids learnt a lot about themselves and their capabilities, as they were frequently pushed beyond their comfort zone. It has essentially set them up as lifelong skiers".

Meanwhile Raglan Area School student Ella McLeod, while she hasn’t had the advantage of combining skiing with her schooling, has been able to ski regularly with an instructor during month-long annual stays in the South Island with parents Fiona and Jim. So when local teachers encouraged Ella to enter the North Island school champs for the first time this year, Fiona says, the 15-year-old did “extraordinarily well” – placing second in her slopestyle event after only a day’s practice on the huge jumps.

A fellow student, Ronan Thomson, has recently shifted from Raglan to Wanaka with his family and is now a top-level snowboarder at Mt Aspiring College, Fiona told the Chronicle.

Then there’s Jen and James Frazerhurst who took daughters Kaia, 9, and Lani, 6, down to Wanaka Primary School for the winter term last year. Originally from Sweden but resident in Raglan for 10 years now, the couple combined the schooling with the chance to see more of New Zealand.

Like National Park School, Wanaka Primary also gets the kids out on the slopes one day a week. “You have to grab these opportunities,” Jen insists. “It adds to the learning.” Edith Symes

Despair is a righteous companion.

And I am in despair. Thank God for the current weather here as a stoic, furious, accompaniment to my state of mind. Mind you, it has nothing to do with Raglan; we have been travelling together for as long as I can remember.

However, sometimes despair takes a long holiday leaving me to revel on my own. There are always stories and reasons and excuses and explanations to offer to those concerned. But really, the outcome remains the same…a prevailing sadness that governs each and every day. Also, it never makes any sense for those who carry on through the highs and lows.

Or as my parents liked to say on those occasions when getting out of bed wasn’t an option: “Just get up!”

Now, the nonsense of their approach makes me smile. But back then, it was enough to shut me up and shut me down for days on end. I have come to accept that there are those that will never suffer the sorrows in

the same way, as it’s not necessarily related to ‘something’ that has happened. The cloak that deftly and silently slips on like a body-bag, is of its own creation; can’t track where it came from, and can’t send it away.

So it sits and it becomes a best friend to cozy up to. So it stands to reason that leaving the safety, warmth, and comfort of bed, is the perfect fit.

Anyway, I am far from alone in this situation. It is prevalent and expanding in every culture throughout the world. Sir John Kirwan, the national spokesperson for depression in New Zealand, has just released a book for teens also suffering. Along with bullying, sexuality, drugs, drinking, and the atrocities of hate, depression almost seems like a welcoming type of inner peace. It is not. If you know someone, and find it hard to accept or understand, just help them. In any way you can, help them with all the love you have to give.

Councillor’s Column It’s been a busy time at Council and a lot happening in Raglan.

After a number of meetings across the district, including Raglan, Council will notify two new Policies for public submissions.

They are the Waikato District Council Local Alcohol Policy 2014 and the Waikato District Gambling Venues Policy 2014 , which will be notified on the 21st October with submissions closing on the 21st November, both these policies are of importance to our Community and the policies reflected Community input, they will be available to view on the Council’s website or from the Council office.

The Community Board is also seeking the Community’s view on the priorities for the upcoming long term plan, 3 yearly review, keep an eye out for the information in the Chronicle.

Council staff, have been working with Iwi across the district to assist the development of Papakainga, I look forward to seeing this in Raglan.

I had the honour of helping judge the speech competitions at the Raglan Area school for year 3 to 6 students and I have to say the standard was really high, well done.

Coming up on the 11th October is the renewal of the freedom of the Town, this is an honour bestowed on the 161 Battery, Royal NewZealand Artillary who served in the Vietnam War and were supported by Raglan people at the time. This will take place at 11am in Wainui Rd, there will be a large number of events through

out the day.

As I mentioned in my last column, work will start shortly for a major upgrade in James St, which will include a large increase in parking close to Town, along with some kerbing and channeling in Norrie Ave, this work will be finished prior to Christmas.

I’m also pleased to announce that there will be a significant number of new footpaths built in the next year particularly in Raglan west Folks will have noticed the major upgrade to the Te Kopua playground, the new equipment is designed for older kids to enjoy, play safe.

As ongoing improvements are made to the town hall, currently heat pumps are being put into the main hall, new carpet will be put in the supper room and we are in the process of renewing the chairs, in due course the hall will be repainted.
