To the Editor, It is Monday. I snuck into watch my two kids (ages 11 & 13) at their after school Hip Hop Dance class that meets down town at St. Peter’s Hall.

Boys and girls were moving fast across the floor.

Their teacher was teaching them moves that I have seen on tv in the music videos.

The kids were having a blast. It looked like a great work out too.

I think this is an excellent after school activity for our local kids.

I think other parents should know about it.

My wife and I have been moved to tears from the kind gesture of paying for our disabled parking permit. The good people at the Raglan Council/ Library building has made it possible to ensure we have good access to services. Some people may say big deal, but to the many disabled and elderly the disability park gives them the ability to be part of the community and that’s a huge deal.

So next time you’re in the council building, give them a smile because good people must be recognized for their kindness, friends of the Raglan Community.

To the Editor The new WDC and Raglan Community Board will soon be fronting the challenges facing Raglan.

There is no easy way of meeting our needs! We need to find unique stratergies for ensuring community wishes/needs are actioned. These needs must be priortitsed! Our wish list has to fit with what ratepayers can reasonably afford.

Clint makes it four in row with clear ward seat win

A

pleased Clint Baddeley was this week looking forward to his fourth three-year stint as Raglan ward councillor after attracting a strong vote of confidence in local elections.

Preliminary results published only hours after voting closed at noon last Saturday showed Clint a clear winner in the two-way tussle for the seat, with 62 per cent of votes cast. He received 656 votes, 256 more than challenger Alan Vink was able to muster with his promise of a “fresh perspective” on Raglan issues.

“It was a clear majority, people knew what they were voting for … yes, it’s pleasing,” Clint told the Chronicle.

He was not sure if it was his biggest majority but shied away from comparisons with the voting last time around, where he was only 23 votes clear of the closest of his three challengers for the ward seat. “It was different last time because I was running for mayor as well and so it split my vote,” he said.

Clint agreed the outcome was partly a yes vote to his more easily identifiable governance experience on the likes of Trust Waikato, Wintec and Waikato District Council. He felt his rival couldn’t really say exactly what his experience was, with positions held not so recognisable to the general public.

Currie goes close in WRC seat bid There was no joy for Raglan’s two candidates in other local elections that closed last Saturday.

Dave Currie attracted 4089 votes in his bid for a spot on the Waikato Regional Council, but the two Waikato general constituency seats instead went to Theresa Stark (5195 votes) and Dave’s running mate Peter Buckley (4608 votes). It was an impressive effort, though, considering Peter has been council chairperson for the past two terms.

Meanwhile Clint Baddeley missed out in hotly contested Waikato District Health Board elections, where a healthy line-up of 20 candidates were vying for the seven publicly elected seats. late in the voting period, Clint did feel the election race was “a bit dirtier than in the past”. But he added that was [the nature of] politics even though he didn’t himself “play games”.

Alan Vink meanwhile said he was “obviously disappointed” with the result and didn’t know if he’d try again for the Raglan ward seat. On whether he was now eyeing the community board chairman’s job, after serving as deputy chair for the past three years, he said that would depend on the new board “but I’m not closed to the idea”.

He saw no problems working with

Clint if he was elected community board chairman. “The campaign period is over, he’s won, it’s time to move on.”

For his part Clint was pleased that Allan Sanson had been returned as Waikato district mayor, even though he fought him for the mayoralty in 2010. Clint said he worked well with Allan “and he gave me the senior chair [heading up council’s strategy and finance committee]”. He’d enjoyed the challenge, developed the role and now that he was re-elected was eyeing resuming it for another term.

Clint rejected any suggestion he might seek the deputy mayoralty. “I’ve had my stint, I get more challenge and fulfilment in the chair’s role,” he said, pointing out the strategy and finance committee’s work influenced both the economic and social development of Raglan.

Clint saw some of his main goals for the new term as retaining services the council provided for Raglan, keeping rates down, supporting tourism and trying to encourage innovative people to work their businesses from home.

He said he’d “really like to tidy up” the green area of Wi Neera Street to provide a better linkage between the Kopua footbridge and the CBD. There was also a 10-year plan to be reviewed in a couple of years.

Overall he would work to keep Raglan a vibrant community, and to continue to make the town “the destination it is” while at the same time being aware of its unique character. “My job is to keep it that way – there’s no place like Raglan,” he said.

Raglan-raised striker scores precious medal

oung soccer talent Emma Blaikie got international-level kudos recently when she was awarded a medal as one of the 12 top New Zealand players among the 27 girls teams from around the country who competed last month at the Aims Games sporting championships in Tauranga.

It’s a proud achievement, says coach Elton Snell of his protégé who’s a striker and a “very dependable” goal-scorer.

The award recognises top players in the country for their age groups, he adds, and looks good on their CVs. Twelve-year-old Emma grew up in Raglan West and, after years of playing junior soccer locally, has gone on to play for Peachgrove Intermediate where she is now in its year eight sports class. Not only has she competed the past two years at the Aims Games as part of the school’s all-girl soccer team the Vixens, but Emma also got

to play across the ditch at last year’s Gold Coast Cup. While the Vixens this year placed seventh overall in the annual Aims Games – narrowly missing the semifinals – they placed second last year. For Emma it’s a week out of school playing three or four soccer games each day, which she loves but admits is “really tiring”.

The tournament gives intermediate school students an opportunity to compete at an elite level against the best of their age across 16 different sports. The event – in its tenth year – now attracts 200-odd New Zealand, Australian and Pacific schools, with medals awarded to the best of the best.

As Emma began her final term at Peachgrove Intermediate this week, she was looking forward to receiving her top player medal at the school’s end-of-year prizegiving.

Raglan teenager Molly Hamilton – like Emma in year eight at Peachgrove – also competed at the Aims Games this year, in a netball team which placed 19th from a field of 80-odd teams.

Facelift on books for local library and council office

A more

leaking roof and the need for space are the reasons behind renovations early next year to Raglan Library and Waikato District Council’s local office downtown.

The planned work is “extensive” and the library will be relocated to another building in Raglan for about three months

while the project is under way, says WDC general manager customer support Sue Duignan.

The building’s shop front will be replaced and moved out by five metres, creating an additional 20 square metres of internal space, while an interior wall will also be removed.

Existing counters will be replaced and a

new toilet for the disabled installed.

External work includes a new roof, guttering and flashings plus replacement of all high level window seals.

The design phase is nearly complete and tenders will be called for in December.

Work is scheduled to begin in March, after the busy holiday period.

No troubled waters for Gals ‘n’ Gurnard event ears that promoters of the F Gals ‘n’ Gurnard fishing competition might be in for a rocky reception came to nothing when they fronted up to a meeting of the Raglan Coastal Reserves Advisory Committee this week.

While there was controversy over the inaugural event held back in early January – centred on the depletion of inner harbour fish stocks – the only concerns raised when Graham Hubert and his co-organisers from Raglan Club turned up to talk about this coming January’s competition were overuse of Kopua domain and the potential traffic congestion around the boat ramp there over six days at the peak of summer.

That’s when Kopua was getting to “maximum usage”, cautioned committee member Sheryl Hart, referring to crowds at the nearby campground and daytrippers.

“You’re lucky to get a park.”

She told organisers they must provide traffic management at Kopua, and co-chairman Shayne Gold – like Sheryl a representative of the Raglan Sport Fishing Club – agreed. “You need someone there organising people,” he said, adding

parking at the Manu Bay ramp would not need supervision since nothing else was planned for that reserve at the time.

“This committee is concerned with over-usage of our (Raglan) reserves,” he reiterated.

Graham – who with fellow club members Barry Dalbeth and Diane Spicer had been asked last week to attend Monday night’s meeting, and expected to cop some flak over the contest – promised he’d act as a warden himself, parking trailers from 6am at Kopua boat ramp “every day we fish”.

He described the fishing tournament as a small, fun event for ladies on boats catching only gurnard, whether in the harbour or out at sea. The event did, however, also cover fishing from rocks and land and was a “huge success” last year, Graham said.

While Sheryl suggested organisers might consider delaying their event by a week in future years to ease the parking problem, Graham pointed out it was deliberately timed for January 6-11 to attract campers and holidaymakers before they started leaving town.

Profits from the tournament go to the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust.

Unique after school programme offered by conservation group

T

here’s nothing like getting outside – exploring, getting muddy and having your curiosity tweaked. Right?

That’s what we think anyway!

‘Karioi Kids’ is a new after school initiative starting this term for kids over 9 years old that love outdoor adventures and want to learn a little bit more about what’s in their own backyard. Karioi Kids is part of the locally led Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project run by A Rocha (a community conservation organisation) and supported by many in the community – including the Whaingaroa Environment Centre.

The program will be run as a pilot

with funding from WEL Energy Trust and will continue next year if more funding becomes available. Well qualified staff and keen volunteers will help run the program. The program is open to all students and age groups (over 9 years) who are genuinely keen to join in adventures that will take place all around Raglan somewhere between our beautiful mountain and the sea. The program starts Wednesday 23 October: 3.305.30pm.

Raglan Old School marks 130 Years

T

he Old School Arts Centre will celebrate the 130-year anniversary of the Old School building this month and to celebrate, a number of special events are set to take place over Labour weekend.

Highlight of the weekend will be the Old School’s 130th birthday party, taking place on Saturday 26th October. With live music and an optional, but highly encouraged period themed dress code, the evening is set to raise the roof on one of Raglan’s most enduring buildings.

Originally built as a oneroom school building in 1883, the Old School has always served as an important centre for learning, activities and art within the local community.

The building operated as a school until 1962, when it was acquired by Waikato District Council’s predecessor, the Raglan County Council. For several years the Old School was

the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Incorporated in the 130year birthday festivities will be the unveiling of the Clay Tile Mural, a kiln fundraising event organised by the team at the Raglan Community Clay Shed.

Since February 2012, around 600 tiles have been painted or carved by locals and visitors to Raglan. The mural will be revealed in all its glory over Labour weekend.

Also opening on Saturday 26 October is The Matchbox Show, an exhibition of miniature artworks (50 per cent ceramic) housed in matchboxes. The show will run daily at the Old School Gallery from Saturday 26 Oct to Thursday 31 Oct, 10am-2pm.

Work on Whaanga coast wastewater scheme gets underway

W

aikato District Council has gathered the support it needs to begin work on the Whaanga Coast wastewater scheme with construction getting underway later this year.

Waikato District Council has been working with Whaanga Coast property owners to discuss installation of a low pressure waste system which will address environmental issues caused by the current onsite wastewater treatment and disposal systems.

General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty has confirmed they now have the support required to start the project and have awarded the contract to Hamilton based company, Spartan Construction.

In 1978, the building was considered a possible home for the Raglan Museum, but renovation work was deemed too costly. Raglan County Council contemplated demolishing the building, but a campaign led by Glen Young and Eva Rickard saw the Old School achieve legal protection under the Historic Places Act. In 1988, management of the building was passed to the Whaingaroa Arts & Works Centre. Volunteers helped restore the building and arts activities flourished.

In 1994, the Raglan Community Arts Council took over the running of the building and the centre was relaunched as the Old School Arts Centre in 2005. Extensive renovation work has been carried out in recent years and in April 2008 the building was registered as a Historic Place-category II by

Mr Harty says while the construction timeline hasn’t been confirmed it will begin before the end of the year. “We are meeting the contractor this week to confirm those details.”

At a cost of $3.7 million (GST included), the Whaanga Coast project involves the installation of extensive piping from Te Tuhi Road, along Wainui Road to the Raglan wastewater treatment plant. Individual properties signed up for the scheme are then connected to the main pipeline

using a low pressure sewer pumping system.

Mr Harty says existing property owners who join the scheme now will pay a subsidised amount with Council covering 52% of the connection cost. He’s urging those who haven’t signed up to do so as soon as possible.

“The subsidy is only available for property owners who choose to join the scheme up until the end of the construction period.

Once the project is complete the offer is not available and they’ll need to contribute the full sum.”

of a special cake, when Raglan’s Care and Craft group marked their 30th birthday recently.

The group had its first meeting in the St Peters Church hall on 3rd October 1983, and moved to its current abode, the Union Church Hall in Stewart Street, some eight years ago. Over the years members have come and gone but the core aspirations have remained: Care and Craft is a place where everyone is welcome; where a supportive inclusive community is nurtured and where skills and interests across a whole raft of creative endeavours find a place to be shared and taught.

“It’s a good place for the ones who might feel a little lonely at times.

Some come along to learn a new skill or two, while others just go round and talk to each other,” explains President Phyllis McEldowney.

Care and Craft is part of a nationwide network founded by the late Mrs Rewa Henderson Q.S.M. in Auckland in 1974. Groups meet, usually weekly, all over New Zealand.

For Lillian Bond and Pauline Abrahams, beavering away on the trinket table, one of the great things Care and Craft offers is that they get to ferret out and reuse all manner of bits and pieces to create fabulous new creations. On the day the Chronicle visited, Lillian was busy turning waste beads and materials sourced from the recycling centre into stunning necklaces, while Pauline was creating beautiful glass or phone holders from flowers, materials and beads.

“It is very satisfying to think that everything we make is made up of 95% recycled materials. We turn bits and pieces into beautiful things and its great being so creative,” says Lillian.

Care and Craft meets each Monday morning at Union Church Hall. A warm welcome is promised.

More than three decades Dawn Marron of performing and two and a half decades of facilitating song, dance and theatre to people of all ages and backgrounds has enlightened me - we are all singers, we are all dancers and doing these things together unites and connects us in a profoundly intimate way. Like the roots of a forest that interweave, providing stability and sharing nourishment, communities that share music are strengthened and more, they are enriched by the experience.

I’m a visionary and lately I’ve been envisioning a community musical performance group. A group made up of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

An inclusive group that creates, supports and encourages and I’m inviting you to help me to make it happen. Let’s have some fun!

Sayer Landscapes: a one-stop shop Celebrating their seventh birthday this year, Sayer Landscape Supplies have been expanding their garden supply range and are now offering espresso coffee while you wait.

Coming under the Sayer Drainage umbrella, the landscapes business first opened back in 2006 with the then 20-year-old Rebecca Sayer at the helm.

“At the start it was just me, a landline and an Eftpos machine in that small potting shed. My daughter was only six-months-old so I had her in a port-a-cot here while I was running the business as well,” says Rebecca.

In 2010 she took a break from managing the business to pursue an interest in beauty therapy, completing a diploma and working with Lancome as a make-up artist. Having another daughter earlier this year, the 27-year-

old returned to help expand the business to fill a gap in the Raglan market. “ This place has always been family-run so coming back after experience in a different industry definitely gave me a fresh perspective and appreciation for being back in a coastal town.”

Enjoying the physical and ‘manlier’ aspects of her job she can be seen making deliveries in the big Sayer truck. “I think some people are a bit surprised when they see me turn up in the truck,’ says the petite blonde.

Briefly tell us about your business?

I have been installing fences and gates for six years. I have traded as Raglan Autogates for three. I install all kinds of fencing anything from small wooden dog fence at the side of the house to pool fences, tennis courts, kindergartens, schools and large security gates like Hubbards in Auckland or the Westpac Trust Helicopter enclosure at Waikato hospital.

Most of my work is generated by dogs, kids or thieves!

What have you recently worked on?

I recently completed fencing a section of the Grafton cycle way in conjunction with Fencing Sysems who supplied the materials What is the bulk of the work you do?

Most of my work is fencing residential homes but more and more people are getting automatic gates.

What are some of the extras people ask for ?

Some of the accessories I install include safety beams, Keypads, intercoms, video intercoms, swipe cards, ground lops, timers, wall switches.

Best thing about your business?

I actually really enjoy the work.

Favorite thing to do outside work?

Definitely fishing.

This Sunday, 20th October at 10am, sees the start of the Raglan Sailing Club’s summer season, which runs through to March next year. The club has an exciting Learn To Sail (L.T.S.) programme for anyone who has always wanted to try their hand at sailing.

Raglan harbour is a wonderful place to sail, and the club will teach both children (over the age of 8yrs) and adults the basics of sailing, progressing to more advanced sailing techniques with races and harbour tours as the L.T.S. sessions continue. The Club also caters for the more experienced sailor, with races each Sailing day after the L.T.S. sessions.

You can bring your own yacht, or use one of the Clubs fleet. The Club sails from Lorenzen Bay each time - park at the bottom of Lorenzen Bay Rd. then come across to the little yellow house on the right of the Bay, across the cause-way.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. So come and have some fun on the water and learn a new skill with our social, safe Sailing Club!
