How did you come up with your DJ Jo’s Takeaways. Te Kopua Domain......................................................825 8761 name?

My Dj name came about during the man cave sessions. It is part of an old nick name from my school days in “Jenks” and because I seemed to get up The Shack. Dine in or Takeaway. 19 Bow Street..................................825 0027 to mischief after a few drinks. I decided to play on the word hijinx with the re spelling to Hijenkz.

Where do you currently play as a DJ? The Raglan Club. Dine in or Takeaway. 22-24 Bow Street.................. 825 8278 Currently I am Djing at the Yotty with my West Coast Party brand.

Previously I was Dj and host of the M.O.A (music of all) underground show on Tactor FM and Co-host/DJ with Gavin Larsen on ‘The Bedroom Show’ on Fevah FM. How did you first get involved with DJing and promotions?

Djing progressed from my love of bass heavy dance music, from going to gigs, jamming on my mates turntables in the man cave - to finally getting gigs.

The main influences when I started had to be Gavin and Clint Larsen. We all had a love for heavy bass music and had Mass on Saturday evenings at 5 pm. started jamming on Clint’s turntables in 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays in Raglan his garage. What kinds of music do you like playing?

I started off playing Dubstep and a little bit of Hard Dance. Now I don’t really restrict myself to genres so you can expect a bit of everything in my sets What is the best thing about DJing?

It has to be dropping that one song that sends the dance floor nuts.

What in your memory has been your best show?

That would have to be a tie between playing at ‘Soundscape’ in Hamilton last year and our first West Coast Party with T1R and Difsound in April this year just good vibes and energy all round.

What song never fails to get you on the dance floor?

‘City on fire’, by State of Mind and PNC. When’s the next gig?

November 1st we have the next edition of West Coast Party at the Yotty.

aglan turned on a beautiful day last Saturday for the 161 Battery’s ‘freedom of the city’ march through the town to mark the renewal of a beautiful friendship.

It had been about 50 years since Raglan locals first offered their support for RNZA’s 161 Battery, 16 Field Regiment while it was stationed in Vietnam for a war that was largely unpopular back home.

The occasion, full of pomp and ceremony, was marked by a parade down the main street by about 50 members of the Battery, some of their veterans, the RNZA band and members of the Raglan Pipe Band.

Along the way a group of locals performed the haka – as part of the challenge, and in support, of the occasion - before the parade carried on into Wainui Road, where veterans and guests were seated for the rest of the ceremony.

Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery Colonel Commandant Barry Dreyer explained that the freedom of the city charter was an ancient Roman tradition

that was only extended to troops who had earned the trust of a town or city.

“It is a great honour that is not often given and is gratefully accepted,” he said.

Honorary Colonel Dreyer, a former member of the 161 Battery and Commanding Officer of the 16 Field Regiment, said he had been an early recipient of one of the many parcels Raglan locals had sent to the Battery.

Having lived in Hamilton and spent time at a Raglan bach in Rose Street, he took personal pleasure from the gifts of food, cigarettes and beer that were regularly shipped from Raglan to Vietnam in the 1960s.

“This was an amazing piece of Kiwiana that came out of Raglan,” he said.

Counillor Clint Baddeley said about 200 tonnes of parcels were sent from Raglan in an act of kindness for the troops, who felt “pretty lonely”.

He talked about Raglan entity Doug Arter - who reportedly encouraged locals to send letters, food parcels and other small comforts to every Battery member stationed in Vietnam - awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in 1969 for services

to soldiers overseas.

Doug, who always tried to find good quality provisions to fill the food parcels, also visited the 161 Battery in Vietnam. He complained about the tea, so set about to find a better tea to send the troops on his return, Mr Baddeley said.

The ceremony was watched by more than 200 people and was followed by a luncheon with dignitaries. Other actitives on the day included an artillary display at Te Kopua Domain, netball and touch rugby games at the Raglan rugby ground, and a dinner and karaoke competition that night at the Raglan Club.

Raglan RSA secretary-treasurer Noleen McCathie said the 161 Battery visit meant a lot to the town because “we go back a while”.

She said the Raglan Club was currently raising money to build new cabinets in the club’s foyer for its memorabilia, with a special section set aside for the 161 Battery.

“We want people to be aware of what the RSA [Returned Services Association] is all about,” she said.

Marriage made in heaven for Raglan businesses

I

t’s called sharing the love: a trio of Raglan businesswomen have banded together to promote Raglan as a wedding destination and help bring more business to the town.

Event coordinator Celeste Duston, graphic designer Shari Amos and photographer Tracie Heasman have joined forces for their new ‘hitchedinraglan’ website, a one-stop-shop for those planning a wedding in Raglan.

The website would help people who wanted to organise their own wedding in Raglan, while ‘the wedding collective’ could help others, such as overseas couples and busy professionals, plan their

big day “as much or as little as their budget allows”, Celeste said.

The trio, who still operated their separate businesses as well, was running a special deal for local businesses, offering a free listing on ‘hitchedinraglan’ for the first year.

Many Raglan businesses had already been listed and linked on the website, including those providing catering, accommodation, beauty treatments, flowers and recreational activities.

“We’re not trying to commercialise Raglan but to get the local businesses more business so that we all benefit,” Celeste explained.

Celeste, who had already coordinated several weddings in Raglan, said a lot of people got married in Raglan “because you get

the million dollar views without it costing a million”.

Raglan was not too far away for most people, and there was a lot to do and lots of beautiful homes that could be rented.

“It’s just such a beautiful place and such an easy getaway for people,” she said.

The only thing missing was a large waterfront wedding or event venue with a garden and enough parking and toilets for at least 150 people.

Celeste said the collective was also open to doing other events, such as hens or bachelor parties, product launches, reunions and corporate events, in addition to weddings.

rganisers of the Raglan Volunteer Rescue Services Fundraiser 2014 are urging people to get in quick as the 400 presale tickets are “selling fast.”

Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Leanna Darby said the fundraiser would be an opportunity for locals to come together and raise money for the Raglan’s five volunteer emergency services: Raglan Fire Service, Raglan Coastguard, Westpac (chopper) Air Ambulance, St John’s Ambulance & Raglan Surf Life-Saving.

“It’s a chance for the community to give to all services…rather than all of us [volunteer emergency services] individually fundraising.”

She said that local catering company owner Colin Chung, would be providing the food for the fundraiser with $10 mains.

“He’s doing the food for free… any proceeds for the cooking goes to the fundraiser.”

Leanna said that a lot of businesses throughout Raglan have also donated their services for the auctions on the night.

“The community’s got together

and given us services to auction off.”

Legendary Raglan Mudsharks guitarist Dave Maybee said the entertainment of the evening was set with the collaboration of the Mudsharks and West Coast Jazz.

“It’s really exciting getting the two groups together and for us to be able to do this,” he said.

This weekend’s fundraiser would be the second fundraiser for the five emergency services with the inaugural event, back in 2012, raising more than $30,000.

Leanna said that tickets to the 2012 fundraiser sold out and encouraged people to get out and buy this year’s presales to avoid disappointment.

“Tickets are selling fast this time and for those who purchase presale tickets, there is the added bonus of spot prizes,” she said.

Spot prizes included $50 BP petrol vouchers and coffee vouchers.

The Raglan Volunteer Rescue Services Fundraiser 2014 will be happening at the Raglan Club this Saturday 18 October. Doors open at 6:00pm. Tickets can be purchased for $25 by contacting Westpac on 825 0602.

Artisan producers invited to Raglan’s first ‘Little Food Fest’ T welcomes

he Raglan Arts Weekend passionate food vendors to book their spot now for January 2015.

Raglan is gearing up for the sixth successful Arts Weekend – an event drawing summer crowds since 2008. This year, a tantalising combination of art, food, and wine is in store for festival-goers.

New CEO for chamber The Chamber of Commerce Raglan is delighted to announce the appointment of Susan Trodden as the first CEO of the Raglan Chamber.

Susan has a strong link to the community and was Manager of the Westpac Bank in Raglan for four years. Susan is currently CEO of

the Te Awamutu Chamber and will work in a dual role spending 3 days in Te Awamutu and 2 in Raglan.

Susan’s role will be to ensure the Chamber provides greater support to the development and growth of business in the Raglan community and will commence her role on the 13th October.

Volunteers see pink for worthy cause

And for the ladies who donated their time to the cause, they were very happy with the generosity of people on the streets of Raglan as they helped to contribute more

than $800 to a very worthy cause.

This year Pink Ribbon Street Appeal Area Co-ordinator Alayne Duthie rallied together seven volunteers to help with the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal.

She said that the fine weather helped raise more money this year than last year.

“It was really good. Not many people walk past without giving something.”

The NZBCF states that more than 600 women die of breast cancer each year in New Zealand.

Alayne said that she had a very personal experience with breast cancer and hoped that money raised would help with awareness and research about the disease.

“My mum passed away with breast cancer when I was 10.”

She said that many people who donated to the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal had their own experiences.

“There were many people that were donating who had their own stories.

Budding tennis stars with NZ Tennis Academy coach Laura Verges

I despite the weather, that greeted NZ t was a group of bright young faces,

Tennis Academy coaches Guillaume Gignoux and Laura Verges in a school holiday tennis programme in Raglan last week.

Set over four consecutive days, the terrible weather did not seem to dampen the spirits of this group of six to 10 year old Raglan kids who learnt tennis basics including serving as well as forehand and backhand.

It’s a departure from their usual work, of coaching high performance youth at the Dey St Tennis Centre in Hamilton as well as St. Peter’s School in Cambridge.

Guillaume sees it as a refreshing change and a chance to bring his passion for tennis to Raglan. “While I really love coaching youth at the top level, I also love to get the opportunity to work with people new to tennis. Especially these tennis camps, we see such an improvement over the four days, and the kids seem to really love it.”

Both Guillaume and Laura have extensive backgrounds in tennis. Guillaume

has been coaching for more than 18 years, with nine of those years being in NZ. Laura; NZTA’s Assistant Coach, began her coaching career after returning to France from the US having been on a four year scholarship to a US University. Indeed this is what many of the young teens in the NZTA Elite Squad have to look forward to.

Both Guillaume and Laura have been through the tough qualification programme France has for their tennis coaches before coming to settle in Raglan.

Guillaume and Laura love living here and it’s this combined love of Raglan and of tennis that sees them offering more tennis options here.

“We would love to see more people playing tennis in Raglan and that’s why we want to start some tennis workshops for adult beginners.” They will offer workshops for a group of women and also for men taking place over four Saturdays starting in November. The cost will be kept to a minimum to encourage participation.

“Tennis is a fantastic sport for fitness, for coordination and it is also a very social sport which is great.”

Guillaume and Laura will also continue

working with Raglan kids in the upcoming summer term on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

The classic annual Fish City snapper fishing tournament returns to Raglan November 21st - 23rd.

There is a $7000 prize pool. Entry is $40 per adult. Junior (under 16) is $15, small fry (under 11) is $10. You can fish anywhere in N.Z waters.

weight - as well as second and third place getters. You can also submitt one other sport fish: albacore, bass, bluenose, hapuku, kahawai, kingfish or trevally.

Opportunity to discuss Raglan’s priorities Last week’s Chronicle had a list of 13 options to readers to choose as Raglan’s priorities over the next ten years.

At their meeting last Thursday, Raglan Residents and Ratepayers Association decided that options such as ‘Minor works on Raglan Streets’ would mean little to most residents and that a public discussion of the options prior to the 20th October deadline would be helpful. Therefore the issue will be on the agenda for Residents & Ratepayers Assoc. AGM. The Association’s President, Bob MacLeod said, “It’s a very welcome

innovation that Raglan people are being consulted about their priorities, but to be meaningful, they not only need the opportunity respond, but also to understand and discuss the pros and cons of the various options. They also need to know what options didn’t make it on the list of 13, such as the proposal for a multi-purpose sports hall.” Bob added that as a Community Board member, he has had much more information and he’ll be pleased to share that at the meeting and hear from others about the merits of the options.

The meeting on Saturday 18th October at 10am in the Fire Station on Wainui Road will be open to all who want to learn and

talk about Raglan’s future.

One of the 13 options is to increase bus services to and from Hamilton, but Raglan Community Board has also pursued Raglan Naturally proposal for buses to the beaches and around town to ease some of the parking problems, as well as improving options for tourists and locals who don’t want to use their cars as much. A draft of the regional transport plan indicates that Raglan might, like Huntly and Ngaruawahia, get an hourly bus when the bus contract is renewed in 2017.

New leg turns recent arrival’s focus to shot at Paralympics

stamping of feet singing teacher Jo Fairclough and her troop of highly energised 5-7 year old are relishing the joy that having fun and singing creates.

Just as well Jo has a ton of energy to dispense on the children because from the moment they arrive for their weekly singing class at the Old School their enthusiasm is unbridled and sitting still is near-on impossible (not that that’s what Jo needs or wants anyway!).

“I have always sung and I’ve spent the last three years busking and doing gigs around New Zealand. Now that I’m here I wanted to offer these classes and through the generosity of the Raglan Lions group I’ve been able to do just that,” explains Jo who is English born but grew up in Malaysia.

Lions gave $400 to cover the cost of

hiring the room at the Old School Arts Centre leaving Jo able to offer her time for a koha, something she says just felt really appropriate to do.

“I want as many children as possible to have the chance to attend these singing classes and the koha gesture makes this possible.”

Jo holds three classes each week from the Old School, catering for pre-schoolers as well as an older group for children 8+ years of age.

“You have to get over your shyness and be a little bit silly in these classes and once the children discover there’s so much fun to be had they really get stuck in. All the while they’re exercising their vocal chords, learning to listen and be together as a group.”

Quiz night answers call for help Raglan Kindergarten would like to thank all the supporters, whaanau help before and on the night, and people who donated all the goods towards the evening held at the Town Hall on the Saturday, 27th of September It was a fun night full of provocative questions that had everybody thinking!

There were eight groups contending and all groups came close to winning, but the

group ‘Mensa - Rejects’ finally took first place! Second place went to the ‘Roaring Forties’! Well done to those groups and all groups that contended. Simon Thompson was a wonderful quizmaster and Julie Hanna held a great auction in which we raised nearly $1,000 from auctioned goods alone. About $1500 was raised for our kindergarten which will go towards new outdoor equipment. Once again, thank-you to all, we greatly appreciate your help.

ne week on from having an artificial

out last Friday in her shorts, weeding her backyard garden in James Street and dreaming of sporting glory.

“I just want gold medals,” she told the Chronicle of her new-found mobility and confidence now the prosthesis has replaced her badly damaged left leg, which was run over by a truck when she was a teen.

Brooklyn’s set her sights on the 2016 Paralympics in Rio and has already begun training in discus and shot put at Hamilton’s Porritt Stadium after getting the go-ahead last week from SportsForce ParaFed, a Sport Waikato organisation for people with physical disabilities.

The 25-year-old recent arrival in Raglan reckons she can do “anything on the field” – except maybe long and high-jump for which a run-in is required – now she’s cast away the crutches and can walk unaided.

A bonus is that she can also pick up twoyear-old daughter Lexi in the night if need be, carrying her back to the comfort of her own bed. “I’ve just got to put my leg on first,” she laughs.

Brooklyn’s candid when it comes to talking about her below-knee amputation at Braemar Hospital recently. It was elective surgery, she reveals, a decision she made over having a tendon transplant which would have come with ongoing complications.

Amputation and an artificial limb guaranteed her a fully functioning foot and leg. “It’s bliss to walk [unaided],” she says. “It’s what I’ve been waiting for; I am so much more independent.”

But Brooklyn needs to walk before she can run, as the saying goes, even if running was her “thing” before the accident. She’ll aspire to discus and shot put for now, says the gutsy young mum, but come the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo she’d like to win a spot in the track team.

Meantime she’ll keep an eye on advancements in technology for “blade runner” prostheses. That may be a lofty ideal, she concedes, but “my mind is in it and I’m determined”.

SportsForce ParaFed development officer Carol Armstrong says Brooklyn’s “nothing’s going to stop me” attitude is what could get her to the Paralympics. “Though it’s early days yet, and she’ll have to get some good distances to qualify, she’s as much chance as anyone else.”

Since moving to Raglan from Hamilton Brooklyn’s also taken to paddling in the local waka ama club for fitness. She’s out on the water training with a crew every Sunday morning and loves it. Swimming’s next on her list of to-do’s, she says, and will start in Raglan from the end of this month.

“I do get my bad days,” she says. “But I’ve waited 12 years for this … I’m just putting things in place.”

Coincidentally, at waka ama training, Brooklyn’s come into contact with another

Brooklyn training at Porritt Stadium disabled sportswoman – a paraplegic who’s set on international success on the water rather than at an athletics stadium.

Margaret Paparoa, who’s two years younger than Brooklyn, is hoping to be able to paddle her own canoe soon after also getting out on the water with Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka.

Her waka will arrive from Tahiti in a few weeks, she says, and will enable her to paddle solo on the Waikato River in between the challenging weekly team training sessions on Whaingaroa Harbour.

For Margaret, who’s had limited mobility since a car accident four years ago left her with paralysed legs, paddling means feeling free again.

“I don’t feel disabled, I feel abled,” she says of the sport she last tried while at school in Northland.

Margaret – whose story recently featured on TV3’s Campbell Live – says she’s grateful for the support from the local club which also used a bit of Kiwi ingenuity to design a special seat for the waka she’s lifted into and out of.

Carol sees Margaret as a “great hope in waka ama, particularly if it’s going to be included as a sport in the 2016 Paralympics”. She recalls the 23-year-old’s eyes “lit up like a possum’s in the headlights when we (SportsForce ParaFed) suggested waka ama”.

Meantime, even though they’re set on representing the country in entirely different disciplines, there’s a good chance both Margaret and Brooklyn will be turning out in the national sprint championships – the country’s biggest annual waka event – at Lake Karapiro next January.

Letters: To the Editor The article about local iwi and DOC taking first steps to ban freedom camping at Te Toto Gorge (Chronicle, p4, October 2nd) didn’t explain an important distinction about freedom camping.

There are two types of campers.

There are those tourists who rent a van with no on-board toilet facilities and park it up overnight anywhere they feel like it. They go to the loo in the bush.

You don’t want to be this type.

Then there’s the type who have campervans, caravans or vans that are totally

self-contained. They have grey water tanks beneath, fresh water tanks beneath and cassette toilets on board which they empty at designated dump stations.

These vans display blue stickers stating that they are self-contained. The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association issues the stickers after the van has gone through a thorough NZMCA check.

DOC will be well aware of this distinction between campers. So will the council. There is no reason to tar all campers with the same brush.
