Then I am sure he may become a role model to those who still look up to him. He has the backing of four very powerful women in Maoridom and if they are comfortable with him coming to NZ then I would probably support them.

Prime Minister and Tourism Minister John Key has announced the project is one of five nationwide the Government will invest in to help grow the tourism sector.

The taxpayer funding of $47,600 follows a recent Dragons’ Den-style presentation in Wellington where local club members Charlie Young and Dirk De Ruysscher had a high-pressured 10 minutes to present their plan for the MTB park to the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE).

They pointed out how the Ocean Trails Mountain Bike Park – to be built in the Wainui Reserve pine forest overlooking Ngarunui beach – would promote yearround adventure activities in Raglan for both the local community and its international visitors, providing a boost to tourism and good economic returns.

Charlie told the Chronicle on Monday the club was thrilled to have secured the funding.

“We were blown away by the news,” he said.

“It shows what can be achieved collectively when like-minded people pull together on a project,” he added proudly.

Club volunteers were up against major business players for their slice of the funds, which matches dollar-for-dollar their own fundraising efforts.

The money has come through the Tourism Growth Partnership Fund, which Key describes as a contestable co-investment fund that allows the Government to work in partnership with the tourism industry.

Its $1.1 million investment this time around in five projects – of which the Raglan MTB park is one – brings to $10.5 million the total it has now forked out under the partnership.

The MBIE says the park project – which it describes as a community enterprise supported by the Raglan MTB Club, Raglan Chamber of Commerce, Waikato District Council and Hamilton-Waikato Regional Tourism – will provide nearly seven kilometres of world-class MTB trails, with options for all skill levels from beginners to advanced riders.

It adds that through partnerships with other New Zealand mountain bike parks and inbound tour operators, the park will

make a significant contribution to the growth of Raglan’s international visitor market.

“With a primary aim of giving an alternative that appeals to its [Raglan’s] traditional surfing market, the Raglan …

MTB park aims to keep visitors in the region for longer, offers opportunities for new business start-ups and wide economic returns,” the MBIE says.

It puts the estimated potential economic benefits to New Zealand at “over $1 million per annum by 2025”.

Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger has also weighed in behind the project, describing the funding announcement by her National Party leader as recognition of Raglan’s tourism value and potential.

“Locals know well the appeal of Raglan, as do the thousands of international tourists who come to the surf beach every year, but Raglan is more than just a surf beach,” she said in a media statement.

“This investment … will help the Raglan Mountain Bike Club promote all year round adventure activities in Raglan.”

Work on the mountain bike park is programmed to start this December.

Raglan Library and office late night opening

T

he Raglan Library and Council Office will soon be offering extended hours with its very first late night on Wednesday 14 October.

Every Wednesday doors will remain open until 8pm with full library services available, as well as accepting and receipting of payments, taking hall bookings and completing dog registrations.

An online survey conducted last year found that 83% of library respondents

favoured an increased level of service for libraries. During this year’s Long Term Plan (LTP) consultation the public was asked to consider two options – an increase of hours or leave opening hours as they are. The majority of the responses were in favour of an extension of library hours.

Customer Support Manager, Sue Duignan says, “We are excited to be able to offer our customers more access to our library and some council services outside of regular hours.

“Extending the hours of opening will make it easier for daytime workers, students, business people and clubs to make use of our facilities. It will give our customers the chance to do some council business after hours."

Raglan Library and Office is the first of Waikato District Council’s six libraries to offer an extension of hours, with the remaining to be rolled out over the coming months.

Although to passers-by the Cliff Street retreat may appear to be nothing more than a largish if fairly conservative brick home, for many Waikato women over the years it’s become a haven where very personal transformations take place.

Seeing that happen has been the most rewarding part of the job, Barbara Brown told the Chronicle last week as she prepared to vacate the manager’s position she’s held for eight years.

Most women “blossom” during their 11-day respites arranged by their GP, she says.

Barbara’s worked 20 years all up at Bryant Retreat, having started as “first assistant” well before taking on the manager’s role.

“It’s been a lovely place to work … a peaceful place to be,” she says. “Although

it can get very noisy too,” she adds, once women get talking and laughing together on their way to wellness.

But it’s time for a change, and she’s looking forward now to enjoying with her husband what Raglan has to offer outside of work.

The therapeutic nature of the retreat and its picturesque harbourside location are part of what’s drawn new manager Robyn Riddle away from her job as a Hamilton social worker, and she’s looking to moving with her husband Charles to Raglan.

“It’s a dream come true,” says the 58 year old who’s longed to live here and was in charge this week after a fortnight’s crossover with Barbara.

Robyn admits she’s had her eye on the job for a while. “I’ve walked past the retreat for years, I love the look of the place, I knew about it and I’ve referred people to it (through social work),” she explains.

She’s in awe of the rapport between the six staff members – all local women – who she says have an “amazing ability to work together”. She’s also impressed by the facility itself which to her knowledge is the only retreat of its kind to provide such care for free.

Fully funded by the Hamilton-based DV Bryant Trust, the now 51-year-old retreat houses six women at a time specifically to provide rest and relaxation from stressful situations like depression, anxiety, exhaustion, grief, illness and burnout – or, as Robyn explains, from “something that’s worn them down”.

The women – aged through from their 20s to their 80s – are nurtured with three freshly prepared meals each day and are free to take time out for themselves or spend it with others staying there.

It’s a facility to be used by both local women and those further afield – from as far north as Meremere and as far south as Taupo. Robyn sees it as “one of the two jewels in the Waikato”, the other being Waikato Hospital’s Mothercraft unit for mothers and babies.

Robyn’s keen to maintain the retreat’s tranquillity and privacy, but to perhaps also have a couple of bicycles or kayaks on hand to encourage the balance of physical and emotional wellbeing. There’s no structured programme, as such, and no counselling – only the informal kind of group therapy that comes with like-minded women living together awhile.

The retreat’s history goes back much further than 51 years: all the way in fact to the early 1930s when women stayed during the winter months at the then Bryant Home for Convalescent Children – now Camp Raglan on Wainui Road overlooking Ngarunui Beach.

Later a house for women was bought by the trust next to the Bryant family bach in Cliff Street, and then the purpose-built redbrick retreat was opened in 1964.

Recent reviews of the facility and its outcomes in terms of women’s wellbeing have concluded that Bryant Retreat is a valuable resource with long-term health benefits, say Robyn and Barbara.

They see the charitable trust continuing indefinitely the work started by philanthropist DV Bryant who aimed postwar – and perhaps ahead of his time – to “nurture the nurturer”.

Saturday brings the eagerly anticipated Jon Toogood acoustic show to the Yotty. Front man of NZs most renowned hard rock metal band Shihad, Jon’s acoustic show has been winning rave reviews as he plays unplugged a selection of his Shihad hits as well as songs from his collaborative outfit, The Adults, and covers of songs that influenced him.

he Union Church takes pleasure in announcing the recommencement of Kidz Club – now to be known as the 7C's Bible Club - for school age children to be held on Thursday afternoons in the fourth term.

Some readers will recall the successful

club, which ran for many years, under the leadership of the late Jean Nicholsen, the late Lois Strawbridge and more recently

by Vicky Beeby.

Children are invited to come straight from school to the Raglan Union Church Hall at the bottom of Stewart Street, for afternoon tea and a range of activities from which they can choose, until 3.30pm.

Then a varied and stimulating programme will run until 4.45pm. Enrolments will be taken at our first club night on October 15th. This is a free event, and all are welcome, including parents.

Non-violent parenting course e are a safe community and W our children are well. Thank goodness mostly that is true.

At the same time we all notice things happening that are not in the best interests of children’s well-being.

Parenting is NOT an easy job. How we parent is based largely on how we ourselves were parented, and often we are not shown other ways.

Over recent years many of you may perhaps have noticed a familiar winter cycle of nonviolent parenting events and trainings held in July and August. These trainings are part of the development of a practice of nonviolent parenting (NVP) here in Whaingaroa/Raglan - giving

parents and those caring for tamariki tools to nurture and support our children as they grow.

NVP is built on the conviction that any child raising practices that hurt a child’s body, heart, mind or spirit, are harmful and detrimental to the healthy development of the child.

The most current research has proven that a nonviolent, empathetic, unconditional approach is vital not only to a child’s emotional, physical and mental development, it is also essential to breaking generational cycles of abuse and neglect.

Term four sees the launch of another 10 week NVP delivery, beginning 13th October. The class gives adults a

framework to think about their actions as parents, and discover what children truly need to thrive as healthy human beings.

The course will include discussion groups, theory, role-playing, specific problem solving. Topics cover ‘Connected Communication’, ‘Understanding Anger’, ‘Setting Limits’ and many more. For many, it is a life changing experience.
