increase  and  the  Community  House  needs  to  be  in  a  position  to  meet  this  on-­going  community  need.

The  Raglan  Community  House  Committee  spent  some  months  working  with  the  Waikato  District  Health  Board  management  about  the  need  for  extra  space.   As  the  DHB  management  were  not  prepared  to  compromise  on  the  existing  space,  or  changes  proposed,  the  Committee  had  no  choice  but  to  give  the  DHB  notice  to  vacate.   We  are  cognisant  of  the  huge  contribution  that  the  District  Nurses  make  to  our  community  but  it  needs  to  be  understood  that  the  services  have  evolved  over  time  with  the  majority  of  their  work  being  home  visits  and  no  longer  at  treatment  rooms.   Their  time  at  base  is  very  limited  being  generally  early  morning  and  late  afternoon  and  could  be  managed  from  alternative  premises  without  compromising  service  delivery.    In  recognition  of  the  need  to  minimise  the  disruption  of  services  within  the  community  a  three  month  notice  period  was  given  and  extended  at  the  request  of  the  DHB  to  mid-­ January  2013.

Whilst  the  need  to  relocate  the  District  Nurses  is  regrettable  it  is  also  cause  for  celebration  that  the  Community  House  and  the  services  it  offers  are  being  increasingly  accessed  by,  and  are  available  to,  members  of  our  community.   Twenty  two  years  ago,  the  two  organisations  came  together  IRU WKH EHQHÂżW RI WKH FRPPXQLW\ DQG now,  both  groups  have  grown  to  the  point  that  they  are  capable  of  standing  alone  and  independent  but  will  continue  an  on-­going  professional  working  relationship.  Â

Stolen goods recovered from burglaries in the Ruapuke area

A  month  ago  Raglan  police  launched  a  public  campaign  to  revitalise  Neighbourhood  Support  Groups,  and  that  was  backed  up  last  week  with  a  challenge  by  the  local  acting  sergeant,  Andrew  Mortimore,  for  urban  residents  to  be  as  proactive  as  the  rural  Raglan  community  in  thwarting  criminals.   His  challenge  came  after  the  Ruapuke  Rural  Support  Group  played  what  he  described  as  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;crucial  partâ&#x20AC;?  in  the  arrest  of  a  trio  of  burglars.

The  calls  to  action  have  had  the  desired  effect:   Neighbourhood  Support  area  co-­ordinator  Kathy  *LOEHUW FRQÂżUPHG WR WKH &KURQLFOH this  week  that  40-­odd  urban  residents  had  now  come  forward  and  offered  to  act  as  street  co-­ordinators  for  the  scheme. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  been  a  wonderful  response,â&#x20AC;?  said  Kathy,  a  volunteer  worker  at  the  Raglan  police  station.

She  said  she  was  now  organising  letterbox  drops  around  town  via  packs  sent  to  the  new  street  co-­ordinators,  and  hoped  to  have  a  number  of  new  Neighbourhood  Support  Groups  up  and  running  shortly.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  will  be  people  taking  care  of  each  other  like  families,  and  building  strong  communities.â&#x20AC;?

Mr  Mortimore  was  full  of  praise  for  the  Ruapuke  community  vigilance  and  action  which  led  to  the  arrest  of  three  males  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  aged  34,  25  and  14  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  and  their  appearances  in  the  Hamilton  District  and  Youth  Courts  on  burglary  charges. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Here  in  Raglan  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  blessed  with  a  very  proactive  rural  community  and  members  of  a  Rural  Support  Group  had  noticed  a  vehicle  towing  a  trailer  acting  suspiciously  and  phoned  police,â&#x20AC;?  he  said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  vehicle  was  seen  going  up  a  number  of  driveways  on  Ruapuke  and  Whaanga  Roads  and,  because  we  were  provided  with  the  registration  number,  RIÂżFHUV ZHUH DEOH WR UHFRJQLVH WKLV vehicle  as  one  linked  to  a  number  of Â

scrap  metal  thefts.â&#x20AC;?

He  said  police  located  the  vehicle  on  Ruapuke  Road,  and  a  search  under  the  Search  and  Surveillance  Act  revealed  several  items  of  interest  that  ZHUH ODWHU LGHQWLÂżHG DV KDYLQJ EHHQ stolen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  key  things  that  led  to  the  trioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  arrest  were  the  relaying  of  timely  and  accurate  information  to  the  police  â&#x20AC;Ś  from  the  Rural  Support  Group  members,  which  made  all  the  difference.â&#x20AC;?

Mr  Mortimore  said  if  this  sense  of  community  could  be  replicated  in  Raglan  town  then  together  residents  and  police  could  be  effective  in  preventing  crime. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Too  often  over  here  [in  Raglan]  we  come  across  the  old  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  be  rightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  attitude.   Such  was  the  case  at  one  property  the  offenders  targeted,  which  had  been  left  unlocked  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  making  it  easy  for  the  thieves  to  gain  entry,â&#x20AC;?  he  said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People  still  think  it  wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  happen  to  them  but  when  it  does  they  are  left  asking  why.â&#x20AC;?

His  advice  to  urban  residents:   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead  of  waiting  to  become  a  victim  look  at  the  bigger  picture,  get  together  with  neighbours  and  form  a  Neighbourhood  Support  Group  so  thieves  know  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  okay  to   target  homes  in  Raglan.â&#x20AC;?

But  the  acting  Raglan  police  chief  was  happier  with  his  lot  by  this  week  as  urban  volunteer  numbers  pushed  out  beyond  the  40  mark.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;People  have  really  come  on  board  with  the  concept  of  Neighbourhood  Support  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  I  am  really  happy  with  the  public  support,â&#x20AC;?  he  said.

Council move ensures Sunday buses through until February Barely  10  days  ago  most  people  about  town  might  well  have  rated  Raglanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  chances  of  getting  a  Sunday  bus  service  back  as  zilch.

But  now,  thanks  to  a  Raglan  Chamber  of  Commerce  initiative  and  then  a  new  summer  service  announced  by  the  Waikato  Regional  Council,  there  will  be  services  between  Raglan  and  +DPLOWRQ HDFK 6XQGD\ WKURXJK until  at  least  early  February. /DVW 6XQGD\ 5DJODQ 6FHQLF Toursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  six-­seater  shuttle  bus  made  two  return  trips  to  Hamilton  in  a  service  that,  thanks  to  the  chamber  intervention,  has  guaranteed  funding  for  seven  weeks.

And  while  the  shuttle  bus  is  set  to  make  its  last  run  on  December  16,   the  gap  will  then  be  picked  up  WKH IROORZLQJ 6XQGD\ Âą 'HFHPEHU 23  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  by  a  WRC  summer  service  WKDW ZLOO UXQ QRW RQO\ 6XQGD\V until  February  3  but  also  on  public Â

holidays  other  than  Christmas  and  Boxing  Days  through  until  Waitangi  Day  on  February  6. /DVW 6XQGD\ÂśV VKXWWOH EXV UXQV attracted  only  three  passengers  all  up  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  one  each  on  the  11.15am  and  5.15pm  services  from  the  Hamilton  Transport  Centre  and  the  4pm  service  from  the  Raglan  L6LWH YLD WKH OLEUDU\ DQG QRQH RQ the  inaugural  run  that  departed  Raglan  at  10am.  %XW -XVWLQH 4XDUUHOO RI 5DJODQ 6FHQLF 7RXUV VDLG VKH DQG her  partner  Keith  Jarmey  were  â&#x20AC;&#x153;shocked  we  had  anyone,  to  be  honestâ&#x20AC;?  given  the  little  lead-­in  time  they  had  to  advertise  the  new  service.

They  expected  patronage  to  pick  up  as  word  of  the  shuttle  bus  service  spread,  lessening  the  shortfall  to  be  met  by  the  local  businesses,  community  groups  and  individuals  whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  agreed  to  act  as  guarantors  if  there  were  fewer  than  six  passengers  per  trip Â

The  WRCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  service  with  a  full-­size  bus  is  set  to  run  a  longer  route  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  to  and  from  Manu  Bay  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  and  to  operate  just  the  one  trip  out  from  Hamilton  and  back  on  HDFK RI WKH 6XQGD\V DQG SXEOLF holidays.   The  bus  will  depart  from  the  transport  centre  at  10am,  arriving  at  Raglan  at  11  and  Manu  Bay  at  11.10.   The  return  bus  will  leave  Manu  Bay  at  4.20pm  and  Raglan  at  4.30,  arriving  back  outside  the  transport  centre  at  5.30.

The  dates  the  service  will  operate  are  December  23  and  30  then  January  1  (New  Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Day),  2,  6,  13,  20,  27  and  28  (Anniversary  Day)  and  February  3  and  6  (Waitangi  Day).  WRC  policy  and  transport Â

group  manager  Vaughan  Payne  touted  the  summer  service  as  giving  â&#x20AC;&#x153;people  in  Hamilton  a  chance  to  enjoy  a  relaxed  day  by  the  seasideâ&#x20AC;?.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  forecasters  are  predicting  good  weather  for  us  this  summer  and  so  our  â&#x20AC;Ś  services  will  give  people  a  chance  to  enjoy  the  sun  at  the  beach.â&#x20AC;?

Mr  Payne  also  defended  the  earlier  withdrawal  of  the  year-­ URXQG 6XQGD\ VHUYLFH VD\LQJ LW wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  an  easy  decision  to  make  â&#x20AC;&#x153;but  it  was  going  to  impact  the  fewest  number  of  peopleâ&#x20AC;?.

The  money  for  bus  services  had  to  be  spent  where  there  was  the  greatest  demand,  and  that  was  clearly  on  the  peak  services  during  school  terms,  he  said.

Thrill of hunt just tonic for retired Raglan pharmacist Ralph  Blanchard  loves  classâ&#x20AC;?  goose  hunt  in  Canada.   nothing  better  than  a  wild-­ Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  been  back  every  year  since.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  just  the  hunting,  the  goose  chase  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  but  thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  no  way  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  left  empty-­handed.  camaraderie  and  the  culinary  Canada  geese  along  with  snow  geese  and  sandhill  cranes  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  known  as  â&#x20AC;&#x153;ribeye  in  the  skyâ&#x20AC;?  because  of  WKHLU WDVWLQHVV Âą Ă&#x20AC;RFN E\ WHQV RI thousands  every  day  over  the  YDVW ZKHDWÂżHOGV RI 6DVNDWFKHZDQ about  this  time  of  year,  and  Ralph  heads  halfway  around  the  world  to  meet  some  American  mates  who  drive  31  hours  from  Illinois  for  the  annual  hunt.  They  spend  up  to  two  weeks  on  the  wild-­goose  hunt  which  VHHV ELUGV ÂżOO WKH VN\ DV WKH\ FURVV Canada  in  a  migration  which  takes  them  from  the  harsh  Arctic  climate  to  Mexico.   Ralphâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  â&#x20AC;&#x153;non-­ resident  alienâ&#x20AC;?  game  bird  licence  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  because  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  neither  from  the  6WDWHV QRU &DQDGD Âą DOORZV KLP WR shoot  Canada  geese  up  to  midday,  but  snow  geese  and  ducks  all  day  long.    Ralphâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  now  touching  on  80  and  reckons  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  had  54  or  55  game  bird  licences  in  his  lifetime.   Every  year  since  he  was  a  teenager  the  onetime  Raglan  pharmacist  of  35  yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  standing  has  indulged  his  passion  for  duck  and  pheasant  shooting  in  New  Zealand.

But  four  years  ago  a  whole  new  experience  opened  up  when  KH ZDV ¿UVW LQYLWHG WR D ³ZRUOG

delights  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  yes  he  does  cook  his  own  goose  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  of  the  many  different  kinds  of  ducks  and  geese  there  which  draw  Ralph  to  Canada  each  New  Zealand  spring.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  the  presence  too  of  wild  animals  that  give  him  a  thrill,  such  as  the  10  to  20  deer  he  sees  on  the  roadside  daily.  Ralphâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  long  been  a  deerstalker,  but  says  nothing  compares  with  the  wildlife  of  Canada.  0DJQLÂżFHQW PRRVH HON EODFN bears  and  coyotes  add  to  the  experience,  he  explains.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  real  interesting.â&#x20AC;?  Last  year  Ralph  got  to  take  his  son  with  him  on  the  wild-­ goose  hunt,  and  â&#x20AC;&#x153;he  had  a  ballâ&#x20AC;?.

Raglan Area Fishing Report: by the Raglan Wharf Seagull Fishing  is  very  good  at  this  moment.  After  a  couple  weeks  of  wind  it  is  great  to  get  outside  the  harbour  out  to  the  50m  mark  and  into  JRRG ¿VKLQJ Yes  the  snapper  are  biting.  You  can  bin  up  to  your  limit  in  a  couple  of  hours.  Snapper  were  6-­8lbs  with  good  sized  gurnard  and  kahawai  in  the  mix.

A  few  predators  were  about  -­  barracuda  and  small  mako  sharks  were  intent  on  ripping  traces  to  ELWV %XW LI WKH ¿VK DUH WKHUH WKH\ are  all  there.

7KHVH ¿VK DUH DOO LQ JRRG condition. &UD\ ¿VKLQJ KDV EHJXQ DORQJ our  coast  in  all  the  well  known  spots.  Just  watch  that  swell  if  you  are  close  to  the  shore.

Flounder  abound.  With  that  windy  weather  and  not  being  able  WR JHW ÂżVKLQJ RXWVLGH ZH KDG VRPH success  with  good  sized  yellow  bellies  up  the  harbour.  Some  days  we  were  the  only  boat  up  there.  A  commercial  operator  has  been  QHWWLQJ WKH GRJJLHV OHPRQ ÂżVK RXW in  the  harbour  on  the  low  tide.  We  had  a  couple  of  feeds  of  mussels  before  an  apparent  West  Coast  EDQ RQ VKHOOÂżVK :H VXUYLYHG The  Raglan  Club  Inc  had  an  excellent  night  with  Aaron Â

It  was  a  sort  of  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what  did  we  have  in  commonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  kind  of  presentation.  It  was  not  planned  to  be  like  this  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  interesting  enough.  7KH VHYHQW\ RU VR ÂżVKRÂśV SUHVHQW could  take  what  they  liked  from  the  evening. :H ERWK ÂżVKHG NJ %RWK used  traces  of  37kg.  Seagull  used  Ă&#x20AC;DVKHU ULJV $DURQ EDUH KRRNV $DURQ WR 6HDJXOO WR %RWK KDG H[SODQDWLRQV WR WKH hook  size.

Trace  length:  Seagull  one  and  a  half  metres,  Aaron  similar.

Both  no  to  soft  baits.  Both  no  to  braid,  although  Aaron  at  depth  would  use  it  to  feel  the  bite.  Best  Bait?  Bonito.  We  both  agreed.  Aaron  although  stating  that  freshly  caught  kahawai  skinned  was  mega  snapper  bait.  Knot  tying  was  personal  to  both  of  us.  We  both  demonstrated  how  we  made  our  tackle  traces.  Ledger  ULJV VLQNHUV DW WKH ERWWRP Âż[HG RU IUHH Ă&#x20AC;RZLQJ R] PLQLPXP %RWK DJUHHG /DQGLQJ ÂżVK 6HDJXOO netted  at  the  boat,  Aaron  because  of  distance  from  the  water  gaffed  or  just  pulled  them  in.

Reel  drag  tension.  Seagull  tight.  Aaron  manipulates  drag  to  WKH ¿VK , KDYH WR DGPLW , KDYH broken  two  rods  over  recent  years  due  to  possibly  too  tight  a  drag.

Moon  phases.  Possibly  better  ¿VKLQJ XS WR WKH IXOO PRRQ EXW not  a  big  factor,  but  you  do  need  current,  like  the  big  tide  range  days  improved  the  catch  rate.  Both  agreed.

Communicating  whilst  ¿VKLQJ" 6HDJXOO 1R $DURQ appreciates  others  saying  where  WKH ¿VK ZHUH ,W LV GRQH DW .DZKLD and  other  harbours,  but  very  little  is  said  off  Raglan.  Seagull  took  that  point.  If  you  are  onto  good  ¿VK WHOO HYHU\RQH 0D\EH Other  tips  discussed:  if  you  are  onto  snapper,  keep  it  going,  no  stopping  for  a  break,  you  could  easily  have  a  ton  of  snapper  under  your  boat  -­  so  if  you  stopped  they  could  move  on.  Even  in  delays,  like  tangles  or  loss  of  gear,  regularly  throw  over  half  a  bonito  head  or  frame  just  to  NHHS WKRVH ¿VK WKHUH Aaron  was  thanked  for  years  of  giving  pleasure  to  those  ZKR ¿VKHG ZLWK KLP DQG KLV professionalism  in  our  local  ¿VKHU\ +H ZLOO EH PLVVHG E\ DOO of  us.  He  does  have  a  recreational  boat  named  Joan  and  has  been  up  the  harbour  and  did  get  a  feed.  So  you  will  be  seeing  him  again  out  in  our  waters.

Opinion: Assets Sale

I  have  to  confess  I  hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  thought  a  lot  about  the  opposition  to  asset  sales  until  I  read  an  article*  about  the  privatisation  of  electricity  in  Britain.  As  a  consumer,  you  have  very  little  power  over  private  suppliers  in  the  way  that  you  can  when  the  supplier  is  the  government  or  its  delegated  bureaucracies.  After  privatisation  ownership  may  be  spread  globally.  Among  those  involved  in  owning  the  suppliers  in  Britain  is  the  French  electricity  power  company  EDF,  itself  still  state  owned  in  France,  plus  East  $VLDÂśV ULFKHVW PDQ Âą /L .D VKLQJ :DUUHQ %XIIHW and  a  consortium  of  the  Commonwealth  Bank  of  Australia  and  a  J.P.  Morgan  Investment  fund. ,Q D VHQVH \RX FRXOG VD\ WKDW WKLV LV MXVW WKH QHZ world  of  global  capitalism,  like  it  or  lump  it.  But  maybe  you  shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  lump  it  in  this  case  because  your  modern  way  of  life  depends  on  a  reliable  and  reasonably  priced  power  supply.  Resistance  to  the  LGHD RI SULYDWLVDWLRQ RI NH\ UHVRXUFHV LV QRW MXVW D sort  of  out  of  date  Socialism.  It  comes  from  a  deeper Â

sense  of  the  need  to  draw  a  line  in  the  developing  philosophy  that  everything  is  for  sale,  competition  and  choice  are  good  for  us.  The  problem  arises  from  the  fact  the  suppliers  of  power  may  reduce  competition,  by  amalgamation  for  instance,  or  forming  a  cartel  covertly.  Basically  they  will  do  what  WKH\ FDQ WR PD[LPLVH SUR¿W DQG UHGXFH FRQVXPHUœV ability  to  protect  themselves  from  exploitation.
