Margery’s clear memories of eeling inspired her illustrations. The book would be out in bookshops this week. Three hundred copies from their initial print run of 2000 had already been sold before the launch.

“We feel like we‘re becoming credible and recognised and bookshop owners are realising that our books will sell,” Jenny said.

Margery, deputy principal of Waitetuna School, said a strength of their books was the educational sections at the back, and the sisters were putting more and more energy into this.

In The Eel Hunt, the educational section in the book talked about the plight of New Zealand’s endangered long fin eel and its life cycle, in which the female only bred once at the age of 20 or 30 years and then died.

And the next tale from the farm?

Jenny was keen to do a series about her beloved pigs. She had bred pigs for years and had a bit of a “fetish” for them.

She saw the books as an opportunity to educate children about how piglets were born, how their instincts kicked in and how Nature worked.

Children were interested in animals and, with all the publicity on television about pig farming, it was also an opportunity to talk about how inappropriate it was to keep pigs in crates.

A

game of soccer in Raglan this Saturday will be more than just a game.

It will be a whole celebration of soccer to highlight the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.

It would be the first time that New Zealand would host the U-20 World Cup, which was the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA)’s second biggest international tournament and expected to be watched by more than 170 million people around the world.

“It’s quite a big deal really,” said James Bannatyne, sales and marketing manager for Hamilton FIFA U-20 World Cup NZ 2015.

To celebrate and publicise this event at a regional level, an invitational Under- and Over20 FIFA side would play the Raglan Roosters at Te Kopua Domain soccer grounds this Saturday, starting at 2.30pm.

“We’re fortunate to have it [U-20 World Cup] in New Zealand and we want to get Waikato people behind it and understand the significance of it,” James said.

The invitational team would include some former All Whites and some well-known figures, such as Sport Waikato CEO Matt Cooper and Hamilton East MP David Bennett.

The event was aimed at families, with Raglan junior soccer players invited to have a kick around before the invitational game and an inflatable kick wall set up for people to have a go, he said.

For next year’s U-20 World Cup, seven of the matches

would be held in Hamilton between May 31 and June 11, coinciding with the 2015 Fieldays, and culminating with

a quarter-final game on June 14.

The tournament was held every two years and next year

would bring 24 teams to play 52 games in seven different venues around New Zealand.

“This is what the youth is asking for - it’s not what we [the adults] are deciding,” she said.

Included in that were plans for a Raglan youth hub, which would soon be piloted on Thursday afternoons – a time when large groups of young people were in town waiting for the start of the Surfside youth group in Te Uku at 7pm.

At the moment Raglan youth felt they had nowhere to go and often felt unwelcome around town, Bronwyn said.

About 14 local businesses had also become involved by giving work experience to some of the local students.

“We’re really proud of that – its great they’re helping us,” she said.

Since last year Waikato had been involved in the Social Sector Trials, in which the Ministries of Education, Health, Justice and Social Development and the New Zealand Police were working together to change the way social services were delivered.

Youth offending and educational achievement statistics had identified Raglan, Ngaruwahia, Te Kauwhata and Huntly as places that needed help with youth issues.

As a result, a lot of people in those towns had started talking about how to help youth but Raglan had taken a different approach, she said.

Bronwyn, former national manager for youth development and youth education at Police National Headquarters, knew that any initiatives had to be youth-led to be successful, whereby youth were not seen as the problem but as part of the solution.

Working with others in the community, they started by looking at how to increase youth and community leadership, increase participation in education, employment and training, and improve collaboration, coordination and communication.

A youth-led Youth Action Committee was in the process of being formed, funded by the Ministry of Social Development.

Year 13 RAS students Keni Paekau and Kaleb Kingi, who were nominated by their peers, would be the driving force behind it.

Now working as student leaders and mentors, the two would be the face of the Give Youth a Chance campaign. Some Year 12 students would also be developed as future leaders/mentors so the initiative had sustainabilty.

Keni and Kaleb were hoping to find some trusted adults who could work with them on the committee by the end of November.

These adults were also needed to make a youth ‘hub’ work. If successful, the committee could open the hub a couple of times a week. “It’s really exciting,” Bronwyn said.

The Raglan Coastguard had already offered a spare shed as a venue, where young people could have something to eat, relax, listen to music and have other positive things to do.

A survey of 12-25-year-olds from Raglan identified the issues for young people here, including the need for a youth hub.

Bronwyn said the survey found that those who attended Hamilton schools felt more connected with the city and did not have any particular issues with Raglan.

But the story was different for those who went to school locally: “They didn’t feel that sense of belonging in Raglan. They felt like the town was set up for tourists,” she said.

Chuter surfing is their passion.

When they heard that they had been both nominated for the Waikato Secondary Schools (WSS) Sports Awards Surfing Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year they were shocked.

“It was really weird,” Callum said of the nomination.

Surf Academy form teacher Larry Fisher said that the Surf Academy, which is based at Raglan Area School and oversees the education of year-11 to 13 students (aged 1517 years) who exhibit a passion and talent for surfing, was contacted by the Raglan Area School sports coordinator for possible candidates.

The WSS Sports Awards recognises the achievements of secondary students in their field of sport “They were nominated because of their achievements in surfing,” said Larry.

Both Indy and Callum have surfed

competitively in national competitions including Indy having placed in the Under 20 Girls Finals in the Backdoor GromBash 2014 surfing comp held at Raglan and, for Callum, a third placing in last month’s National Scholastic Surfing Championship in Taranaki.

Both Indy and Callum attended the ceremony, held in Hamilton on Sunday, which saw Indy win the WSS Sports Awards Surfing Sportswoman of the year.

However, Indy left before she could receive her award.

“I got really nervous,” Indy said.

Despite the nerves, Indy said she felt “privileged” to have won such an accolade for something that was “definitely what I love to do.”

Although Callum did not receive an award, he has been nominated for the Sport Waikato 2014 District Sports Awards Junior Sports Person of the Year along with classmate Naumai Kereopa-Lloyd, for her achievements in netball, to be held later this month.

Gardening Column: Putting down roots

I

t is ‘good to go’ in our gardens right now.

Every plant and seed is in germination or growing mode. These winds do dry our garden soil somewhat but that rain was a huge blessing. The difference could be seen in days.

Look at the lawns you just finish mowing and in days they need to be cut again. The competition (weeds) need to be taken out before they get established.

This gives all plants an even chance.

Silver beet is now bolting, either pick it hard before it bolts, or replace with young plants. And at long last heaps of young broad beans are ready, along with freshly dug potatoes.

Slugs, snails and slaters will now need to be controlled.

Bec’s at Sayers Landscapes has bulk mushroom compost, which is hard to get in the Waikato. A trailer load mixed with a scoop of their filtered topsoil is perfect for overlaying an existing garden or to start a garden. This mix will grow all. They also have large rolls of fine mesh to put over frames to keep the white butterfly and

Mulching is now important for all gardens and plants for weed control and moisture retention.

Opinion: Outside looking in For so long I had been preparing to leave for New Zealand. Notwithstanding the packing, the selling, the bending, the lifting, the giveaways, the storing, and the actual moving, there was the action of saying goodbye to family, friends, pets, and all things familiar. Over that time nearly every single person, both strangers and friends, either had always wanted to see New Zealand, or promised to come and visit. The point? Years later, one friend has been to see me, and it happened completely randomly. She informed me she was coming and was October good?! I’ve loved her for over 20 years, and her brusque ways have always infuriated me and had me admire her. I’ve never been accused of being subtle, but she makes me look like a pot of honey. And it was effortless as we found our grooves of friendship again, and I began to remember what deep, unconditional, friendship feels like.

I was welcomed here by fire, passion, lust,

danger, fear, and destiny. Budding friendships built and shattered in short time. Finding my footing and following my heart was not forthcoming. However, I ultimately landed and began to prosper. But deep friendship? That is what I miss most in my current journey: the option to call a buddy, meet for a beer, and talk. And talk safely, with trust, and love. Even though I was nervous beforehand, this past week with her gave me everything I’ve been longing for in the re-building of a life. To be known in the history of my life. Where I’ve come from and how I’ve grown can only be witnessed in the longevity of relationship. And so we met every evening out on the deck for our time; after the day closes and everyone has gone to sleep. We drank, we laughed, we cried, and on occasion, we shared a cigarette in the crisp, ocean air of the night. And I remembered what it felt like to disappear into the privacy of a sacred love and friendship. Ezekiel Jacob

Area Fishing Report:

Snapper of size are being caught at the60m mark, due west of the bar and at the same depth out of Kawhia.

We have tried closer in, but other than a number of nice gurnard and kahawai, the snapper were just not there.

Water temperature is 15.5.

We are also getting in the mix at 60m gurnard, kahawai, spiny dogs and school shark.

Fresh baits and quality hooks and you are guaranteed a feed.

Pesky strong westerlies and high swell size has made it hard to choose your fishing days over the bar. Manu Bay has been too rough on the ramp due to sea/wind/tidal condition.

Whitebait: it is probably one of our best seasons for many years. Port Waikato has such abundance that the buyers are offering real low prices per kilo of fish. I recently had a feed of local

harbour mussels and found them in good size and great condition. It was what the grandchildren wanted to do, cooking them up on a gas ring in seawater. We went back the next day for more.

Flounder are pretty scarce at present, I saw just a few on the light a few nights ago, and got none. Netting up the harbour was not much better.

However there are plenty of dog fish in our harbour, just watch your net mesh size when taking these.

There are plenty of mullet at the top of the tide - in the rushes and stream mouths.

The Fish City Family Fishing Tournament is on the 21st-23rd November. The Ecolab Fishing Competition on the Thursday 4th December.

Top Catch Icebreaker Tournament is the 21st and 22nd November.

The Raglan Harbour entrance is on the leads and all harbour navigation lights are in order.
