That is WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts the other risk that I worry about. We don’t want some foreign company to take away our sand and kill all of its

There are two huge threats to my view: seabed mining and deep sea oil drilling in Raglan. I want clean beaches, hot black sand, healthy fish, huge and awesome waves and a beautiful view. And I bet everyone knows what I don’t want: things like oil spills.

Protest against deep sea oil drilling here, there and everywhere. If you do nothing, then Raglan’s heart and soul could be terminated.

or a short while it was looking like Raglan’s “Banners on the Beach” protest last Saturday mightn’t amount to much at all – but not for long. The trickle of people carrying their signs-of-the times down the sandy beach access from the carpark turned into a steady stream and then almost a tide.

Others began pouring in along the beach from points east and some had even walked down from Ngarunui Beach. Soon a 150-metre stretch of black sand marked out by eight towering blue and yellow flags was a sea of faces and signs.

Kiwis Against Seabed Mining president Phil McCabe initially put crowd numbers at around 400 but the figure was later variously reported at between 650 and 750 – a turnout that was topped only at Piha, where an estimated 1000 people protested the threat oil exploration posed to what the media described as Auckland’s “iconic” beach.

Most Raglan placards had direct and simple messages for the Government, Simon Bridges and Anadarko, whose untested drill ship the Noble Bob Douglas was early this week still being kept by a protest flotilla from making a start on an exploratory deep-sea well 110 nautical miles due west of Mt Karioi.

‘Sea lice’ encounter at Kopua Animal Health Column estuary a puzzle For Raglan People + their Pets Pets on holiday The holiday season is rapidly approaching, and for those of us with pets there are a few extra things to consider to decrease the likelihood of misadventure for locals and tourists during the summer holidays.

Vaccinations: Most boarding kennels and catteries require pets to be fully vaccinated and boosted annually.

For cats this is a 3-in-1 vaccine to protect against “cat flu”, and dogs get vaccinated against parvo, distemper, hepatitis and lepto as part of the core vaccine, and a kennel cough vaccine is required for boarding kennels.

Taking your pets on holiday increases their risk of exposure to potentially lethal viruses so vaccinations should always be kept up-to-date.

Swallowed or embedded fish hooks: This is a common problem in pets whose owners enjoy recreational fishing, but sometimes pets will pick them up while exploring. Pets can swallow them while scavenging bait or get them embedded in the face or skin while at beaches or wharves, particularly at low tide.

If this happens we recommend a trip to the local vet clinic, because if the barb is embedded they are very difficult to remove without some form of anaesthetic and the correct technique. Swallowed fish hooks have a far greater risk

factor, and should always be seen by a vet.

Overheating: With summer comes the peril of hot cars and abandoned animals. All animals are prone to heat stress if left unattended in hot cars, and this also applies to dogs tied on the back of utes. Signs of hyperthermia (overheating) in dogs are hyperventilation (excessive panting), bright pink gums and increased rectal temperature. Care must be taken not to overcool these animals, and a trip to the vet clinic for a check up is recommended.

Dog fights: Over the holidays we treat an increased number of dogs injured in fights, most of which occur on the beach. These range from major, life threatening injuries, to less serious wounds requiring pain relief and antibiotics. Deep puncture wounds will often not be very visible or bleed much, but will commonly result in infection and should be treated as soon as possible. As a precaution, dogs should be kept on leads in public places or when other dogs are around.

aglan resident Robbyn Storey was so distressed when she discovered what looked like sea lice attached to her young granddaughter’s body as she sat on the water’s edge at Kopua estuary recently that it’s “put me off taking her back down there again”.

She’s wondering what exactly the transparent, pearly looking things were and if others too have had to pluck them off the skin – a harrowing experience in itself, because the profuse bleeding it caused forced her to take the 19-month-old to be checked at West Coast Health Clinic.

By that time there was a “big puddle of blood” in the nappy which Robbyn had hastily grabbed to put back on the toddler after having sat her in a tidal pool with only a rash vest on.

Robbyn says she was shocked at all the blood running down her grand-daughter’s legs, and couldn’t believe the child hadn’t cried out as whatever it was clung to her. “It was like they (the sea creatures) had injected something into her to stop the blood clotting.”

While West Coast Health could shed no light on the matter at the time, and the child was none the worse for wear soon after the incident – apart from sporting three little puncture holes in the skin of her lower body – Robbyn googled sea lice to find that one variety is

actually the microscopic larvae of jellyfish “large enough to be visible to the naked eye but nearly invisible in the water”.

But Whaingaroa Harbour Care’s Fred Lichtwark believes, from the description, these particular sea lice or parasites are like giant-sized fleas that attach to fish and suck the blood out. “They’re quite prolific on the shoreline as the tide comes up.”

They can get inside swimmers’ togs and wetsuits too, he says, and have done so at Kopua in the past.

He suspects recent illegal dumping of fish waste at the Kopua boat-ramp has attracted the “nasty bloody things” to the estuary, and that people could get an infection from them because of the poor water quality.

Pipe band to play in town to sound out new interest

R to drum up a bit of business

aglan Pipe Band is looking

– and come Friday week will play in Bow Street to attract new members and supporters.

It’s good to become involved in “something different”, says secretary-treasurer Noleen McCathie who during the hour-long event will be encouraging locals to sign up as friends of the pipe band.

A keen genealogist, Noleen can also tell locals if they’ve got Scottish ancestry and which clan they belong to.

The pipe band has a long history in town, she adds, traditionally playing at Raglan’s Anzac memorial service and New Year’s Eve parade since its formation in 1947.

Back then it had a “small but enthusiastic” beginning, says local resident Tom White who was one of the original pipers and holds much memorabilia at his home on Marine Parade.

The band currently has only “six or seven” core members – a few comparatively youthful amid the

stalwarts now in their 70s and 80s – who practise weekly at the local fire station and play at events around the district. But Noeline confesses the band are “limping along” and often call on others from out of town to swell their ranks.

They’ve got a particularly busy weekend coming up with not only

their 6pm performance in Bow Street on Friday week – December 6 – but also an event in Ngaruawahia on the Saturday, followed by Hamilton Christmas Parade on Sunday afternoon and then back to Raglan for Christmas in the Park at Kopua Domain that night.

Currie redirects energy into chamber power-up

R

aglan resident Dave Currie may be out of the national limelight since retiring last year from his longtime role as chef de mission to New Zealand’s Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams, but by his own admission is certainly “not ready for pasture”.

So as newly appointed chair of the local Chamber of Commerce, he’s keen now to redirect his energy into a business community which has in the past called on him as a motivational speaker.

While he’s not a business operator himself Dave says he will bring solid governance experience to the role, and is keen to put some more “horsepower” into the organisation its 70-odd members look to for networking and mentoring.

To do that there’ll be a bit of restructuring, he says, to give respite to those within the chamber who’ve been carrying

the load.

Dave acknowledges the good job his predecessor Stephanie Philp has done the past couple of years in “growing” the chamber, and hopes to go forward by continuing to provide a vibrant business environment which offers both a mentoring and online human resources service.

Raglan needs a strong united voice, he believes, seeing no need to change the chamber’s series of events which include its longestablished after five meetings, guest speaker evenings and popular breakfast networking.

Meantime Dave, at 68, is enjoying being around town a lot more now since retiring last year as chef de mission or team manager for New Zealand’s Games squads.

In a varied career he’s also been executive director of the Halberg Trust, manager for a time of the Black Caps and WEL Energy Trust chairman. He was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009.

Big turnout at Raglan bar day

big turnout at the latest Raglan Bar crossing course for boaties is a great sign, says Waikato Regional Council’s navigation safety programme manager Nicole Botherway.

The Raglan Coastguard-run event, held with council support last Sunday, attracted 77 people.

“It’s excellent to see boaties are taking safety seriously and preparing themselves for the challenge of crossing this notoriously difficult bar,” said Mrs Botherway.

“These courses are very well run, with a real commitment to excellence aimed at preventing boating fatalities and injuries.”

Only now though can Dave focus on Raglan as a fulltime resident – walking, biking, gardening and renovating his early-1930s home on Government Road – despite having been based in town for 14 years.

“But you can only drink so many coffees … I’m not ready for pasture,” he quips, referring to his new chamber role.

The courses involve taking participants through an hour session on best practice theory.

Then attendees are taken on a Coastguard vessel to show theory being used practically out on the bar.

“The council’s Raglan harbourmaster Kim McKenzie believes accidents have decreased at the bar since the courses were introduced,” said Mrs Botherway.

“We’ll continue to support these courses. Partnering with community organizations such as Coastguard is an important part of our navigation safety work.”

Picnic with a purpose

picnic is to be held at Kokiri Centre on Saturday week (December 8) to encourage Raglan people to express their views on the current deep-sea drilling and sand mining threats.

Angeline Greensill, who is the Tainui hapu environmental spokesman, said the “Have your say day” would be a relaxed affair starting at 10am at the centre, which is on Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive.

She said there were a number of ways for people to have their

say on the two issues, from formal submissions on TTR’s sand mining application through to the likes of art and poetry, and locals could learn about these at the picnic. As part of the day it was hoped to have a graffiti artist working on a wall of the Kokiri’s stage.

Raglan members have been swapping their skills and time carrying out all kinds of tasks: computer support, baking, gardening, proofreading, dog walking, and more…

The idea is to do what you like, and someone else can do what they like. Rather be outdoors than in the kitchen?

Mark gets homebaking delivered, and spends his time giving guided bird walks and helping in the garden. Timebank is a great way not only to share but also to learn skills. It’s also fun to just have someone alongside when doing a project or a big job. Members swap time in each others’ gardens, which is a fun way to get new tips and get things done!

Recently, a Timebank member had to move house, but hurt his back and could not change his move date.

Timebankers came to the rescue. “I [was] blown away by the support of an amazing bunch of people who gave up their Saturday to come and help do what would have been an ENORMOUS task on my own (even in the best of times).”

So what’s next for Timebank? More monthly potlucks, when member’s get a chance to meet each other and find out what they can share and do for each other.

Our business is family owned and operated. We have been operating since August 2006.

What do you specialize in?

We specialize in bulk landscaping products which include soils, metal, sands, barks, crushed shell, river stone, lime chip and of course fire wood for winter. We have a new expanded plant nursery on site with all sorts of plants - natives, ground covers, perennials, hedging plants, fruit trees, citrus...all sorts.

Do you deliver?

We deliver 6 days a week. Our truck can hold up to 4 cubic metres and the minimum amount for delivery is one cubic metre. We charge around $25.00 for delivery to Raglan town.

What’s the best thing about your business?

It saves the community time and money if they can get what they need for their property from our yard, instead of driving all the way over the divvy to get product. Our prices are inclusive of cartage to Raglan so we try and keep our prices as competitive as we can.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?

To ride my horse and of course spend time with my two daughters Indie (7) and Scarlett Ruby-Rose (6 months).

What’s the best piece of advice you give your customers?

Before you start landscaping, do some research, decide on a theme and make a plan so you use and plant the right things and it will all come together at the end.

The days on which and the hours during which liquor is (or is intended to be) sold under licence are: 8am until 12am, 7 days a week.

The application may be inspected during ordinary office hours at the Waikato District Council, District Licensing Agency, 15 Galileo Street, Ngaruawahia.

Any person who is entitled to object and who wishes to object to the grant of application may, not later than 15 working days after the date of the first publication of this notice, file a notice in writing of the objection with the Secretary of the District Licensing Agency at Waikato District Council, Private Bag 544, Ngaruawahia 3742.
