eter and Sarah Hillary will be guests of honour at the opening of a new forest reserve near Raglan that bears their famous father’s name, as well as that of a local farming family which has helped protect the area.

Sir Edmund Hillary was the longserving first patron of the Native Forest Restoration Trust which will own and manage the 460 hectare Ed Hillary Hope Reserve, while the Hope family has helped protect the bush and farmed the land for more than 70 years.

The opening will be at 11.30am on Saturday 23 May at 732 Old Mountain Rd, Waitetuna, Raglan.

The new reserve contains 180 hectares of established forest and more than 280 hectares of farm land well suited for restoration. It adjoins the Four Brothers Scenic Reserve.

The project will contribute significantly to the network of protected native forest areas within 20 kilometres of Hamilton. It will also be part of Waikato Regional Council’s Halo Project, which involves active pest animal control at selected sites near Hamilton to support birdlife such as tui and kereru.

The council has paid approximately $500,000 towards the cost of the land, with funds built up over eight years, while the trust contributed $860,000.

The trust will now hold it for ongoing management, including pest control.

The area will be protected in perpetuity

by a Queen Elizabeth II covenant. The council’s contribution follows similar purchases over the years in other parts of the wider Waikato region.

The council’s natural heritage team leader Alan Saunders said establishing the Ed Hillary Hope Reserve was an exciting development for the Waikato when it came to protecting stands of native bush and promoting flourishing birdlife.

“The region’s remaining stands of native forest are fragmented and often riddled with pest animals and weeds,” Mr Saunders said.

“The creation of this major new reserve is just magic when it comes to us protecting what’s there now and restoring things for the future.”

The Native Forest Restoration Trust’s manager Sandy Crichton said the proximity of the reserve to Raglan and Hamilton makes the site potentially very special and there will be lots of community involvement in its operation.

“We would like to see the Ed Hillary Hope Reserve become a flagship reserve for the trust, a reserve with great public access and high recreation value.

“Old logging roads will be developed for walking tracks, and the restoration of pastureland will involve local volunteers.

We plan to connect the Karamu Walkway through the new reserve to create a new loop track, a track that we would like to use to tell the story of restoration on the new reserve.”

Re: Raglan Maori Warden fundraising puzzle.

Recently the Raglan Maori Warden Charitable Trust applied to Waikato District Council to run a fund-raiser on the Opotoru Bridge; the Wardens are all volunteers and rely on grants and donations to fund their excellent and tireless community work.

Their application was turned down on the grounds that it would be “soliciting for money”. Really?

Yet just a couple of weeks later, the

St Johns Ambulance ran a fundraiser on the Opotoru Bridge and asked people to make a donation.

It seems there are different rules being applied here. Why is this? I'm waiting to hear the Waikato DIstrict Council's explanation for this bizarre contradictory decision making.

Community Trusts should have equal opportunity, surely.

Students set to debut own anti-bullying composition

R

aglan Area School will show its support for Pink Shirt Day next week when an eight-strong group of senior students launch an original anti-bullying song at morning assembly on the Wednesday – and the school’s 450-odd students unite by dressing in pink on the Friday.

It’s to promote an awareness of bullying and to show such behaviour is “not okay” in our community, says school social worker Hineoma Paekau-Rush. She’s worked for three years now with both Raglan Area and Te Uku School students – who will also wear pink come Friday week – in the common goal towards zero bullying.

“We’re trying to be the first bully-free schools in New Zealand,” explains Hineoma, who believes our schools are the hub of the community and what’s talked about there will filter through to homes.

“If there’s one place that can do it, Raglan can,” she adds of the bully-free ideal.

The area school’s anti-bullying song or waiata being performed next week ahead of Pink Shirt Day came out of an initiative last year, explains deputy principal Bronwyn Haitana, when Cornerstone Roots frontman Brian Ruawai worked with students to help put their original composition together.

The message is also the focus of the school’s mid-week assemblies which stress respecting one another’s differences and resisting bullying, she told the Chronicle. It involves talking about and understanding the many forms of bullying, and encouraging students to speak up and be “active bystanders” when necessary.

“Students know what respectful relationships look like,” Bronwyn insists.

“They just need the confidence to be who they are … and to care about each other.”

The respectful relationships theme is also included in a colouring-in competition for the junior school area, with three $50 Warehouse vouchers to be won.

countries including New Zealand since 2009. It encourages people to speak up, stand together and stop bullying.

The movement began in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1977 when a group of students defended a kid who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. His peers took a stand by also wearing pink shirts, and handed them out to their classmates to show solidarity.

Wearing a pink shirt is now a way of showing those being bullied that there are people around who care.

Kereopa wins race for competition funding A tired but happy Daniel Kereopa is off to Mexico and Tahiti to compete in stand up paddle disciplines after a mammoth fundraising effort.

Daniel would join fellow Raglan paddler Arnie Armstrong in Mexico this week to compete for New Zealand at the 2015 ISA Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championship in Sayulita.

The eight-day event involved teams from more than 25 countries competing in 10 different surfing and racing disciplines. Last year, New Zealand came tenth overall.

Daniel, who won The Ultimate Waterman inaugural world title in New Zealand in March, had to do some quick fundraising to make the ISA event and then the Waterman League’s Stand Up World Tour event in Tahiti at the end of May. Through online pledges, a fundraising day at Auckland’s Red Beach and an auction, Daniel reached his target of $8000 to pay for his travel expenses.

Poihakena Marae kaumatua also gave Daniel one of their Rarotonga trip fundraising days – with Daniel on cooking – to help him on his mission.

“So I’m off to Mexico and Tahiti,” Daniel said this week.

“I’m fit but I’m tired – running around doing this [fundraising] stuff is not calming work!,” he joked.

In Mexico he was looking forward to catching up with Ultimate Waterman adversaries, Tahitian Georges Cronsteadt, American Danny Ching and Hawaiian Connor Baxter.

“Every time I go into an event I think about winning,” Daniel said. “I’m going to make sure I have a bit of fun and do my country proud.”

After a week back home, Daniel would fly to Tahiti where he would meet Georges again, plus Ultimate Waterman competitors Tahiti’s Manoa Drollet and Hawaiian Kai Lenny for the tour, which was part of a six-event competition.

Owners of the Hamilton’s highly acclaimed Sugur Bowl Café, Rach and Aaron Bidois, would soon be opening a new establishment in Bow Street, where Banteay Srey Khmer Restaurant currently operated.

Rach said they would take over the building on May 14 and then would spend six to eight weeks preparing it for the opening at the end of June or early July: “We need to funk it up a bit.”

The as-yet unnamed café would sell cabinet food, salads, raw foods and other café-style food by day, then metamorphous into a takeaway joint by night with gourmet burgers, craft beers and healthy gourmet food available to eat in or take out.

Part of the plan was also to develop the courtyard at the back of the café. “We’re going to make it really cool,” Rach said.

Rach and Aaron, who live in Raglan with their three children, have worked in hospitality for 15 to 20 years and believe they have found a gap in the Raglan market for healthy gourmet takeaways.

“As a working family, coming home at night [to Raglan] you can’t always get what you want for a takeaway,” she said.

The new café would be similar to the Sugar Bowl in Maeroa, which frequently gets named as one of the top cafes in Hamilton and does well in food awards.

The most recent accolade was from BuzzFeed, a American news and

“Sugar Bowl isn’t your usual eggs n’ bacon style breakfast. Fresh ingredients, used in innovative ways, makes for a brunch that’ll improve your morning,” BuzzFeed said.

“We’ve always been pretty staunch about having really healthy food and keeping up

with food trends,” Rach said of the café, which the couple had owned for 10 years.

They planned to keep the Sugar Bowl Café, where Aaron would still work for at least the big morning rush there.

Rach worked more behind the scenes.

She planned to eventually develop the catering side of the business in Raglan too, as it was a core part of their Hamilton business.

Raglan lifeguards win national surf lifesaving award A

ssisting a surfer out of a rip and preventing further swimmers from getting into strife has won Raglan lifeguards a national surf lifesaving award.

Each month, Surf Life Saving New Zealand selects a winning rescue from each region as well as an overall national winner for the title of BP Rescue of the Month. The Raglan Surf Life Saving Club has won the Northern Region BP Rescue of the Month award for March as well as being the overall national winner.

After a busy day of teaching Beach Education, lifeguards Sarah Sharp and Olivia Tobin were relaxing when Sarah went out onto the deck of the surf club to have a look at the beach.

She spotted a group of six to seven learner surfers and two swimmers who were caught in a rip. After watching for a

short period of time, she could see that they weren’t making any progress while trying to return to the shore.

She immediately called Olivia and after promptly setting up the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB), they headed down the hill and along the beach towards the rip. By this time, most of the swimmers had made their own way into the shallow water, although one surfer was still paddling against the current.

Due to the low tide, a member of the public assisted in the shallow water before the boat was able to be started. When the lifeguards reached the patient, a French tourist, he was clearly struggling and asked for assistance back to the beach. He was picked up by the boat and returned to shore, with no further assistance required.

It is likely that the patient would have made it back to shore without assistance, however it would have taken much longer and he would have become very tired.

Wainui MTB tracks postponed due to consent process The Raglan Mountain Biking Club are having to delay planned track building in the Wainui Reserve due to the resource consenting process taking longer than anticipated.

Empire of Dirt, the company contracted to carry out the build, will now begin track construction in October.

While the delay is disappointing for keen bikers who have been waiting several years for the tracks to get underway, it gives the club the advantage of getting the tracks right and ensuring high quality construction. It also gives the club time

for future planning as the October build is only phase one of track construction. More thought can now put into how these initial tracks feed into phase two.

Adam King from Empire of Dirt is not at all fazed by the delay and says the pine area of the reserve is perfect for mountain biking tracks. He is excited by the potential of the area and believes the Raglan Ocean Trails mountain bike park will be a real draw card for the area.

Just as the lifeguards were getting ready to load the IRB back onto the trailer, they spotted a couple approximately 30m up the beach, knee-deep in water, who were about to go for a swim in the same rip. Sarah performed a preventative action, advising the tourists of the danger and how to identify a rip.

Completing a preventative action also reduced the likelihood of further swimmers getting into difficulty in the same location.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand Chairman Geoff Hamilton says the efforts shown by the Lifeguards was admirable. “The skill and professionalism shown by those involved in the incident is testament to qualities valued

by Surf Life Saving New Zealand and BP,” he says.

The club receives a $500 fuel voucher from BP to help with the financial costs of keeping communities safe in the water.

Matariki competition Next month marks the start of the third annual Waikato District Matariki Festival.

Matariki is a small but distinctive cluster of stars which appear in the sky during June. In the Maori calendar, Matariki is the start of the New Year and a time of harvest, sharing and celebration.

To celebrate Matariki through the written word and the arts Waikato District Libraries are holding the annual Matariki competition! Residents are invited to create short stories, poetry, or design their own book cover.

Matapihi dream come true for enterprising educator

S

he’s been a preschool teacher for going on 40 years now and Merren Goodison is as excited as ever by the learning of her young protégés.

Indeed, she reckons that for the past six years she’s been living the dream at Matapihi, the kindergarten she and husband Mike – along with two business partners – started up in idyllic surrounds in the Te Mata countryside.

Set amid eight acres of native bush and boasting its own mini lake, it’s something this enterprising teacher envisaged for a long time. “I dreamed of a country centre where we would be surrounded by New Zealand’s beauty, and the natural environment would have a large influence on our programme.”

Matapihi is that magical place, Merren says, where seven trained teachers deliver a

traditional kindergarten curriculum and the ‘Uru Taiao’ programme to 30-odd three, four and five year olds daily. While Uru Taiao translates as entering into the realms of nature, she explains, more simply put it means the children get to “go bush” one day a week and basically connect with nature.

That’s different groups of children heading outside exploring for hours on end with a different teacher on any given day, rain or shine.

The children cope with inclement weather, assess and take risks, use logs and rope for crossing spaces, often wallow in mud and puddles when winter weather hits, build shelters and create their own adventures in the great outdoors.

“Green time not screen time” sums it up, says Merren, who’s quick to add that’s not an original quote but it’s a good one.

She and the team at Matapihi have earned accolades for their unique outdoor programme, which has become something of a model in early childhood education.

There’s a steady stream of educators to the centre from all over New Zealand and from countries such as Germany, Sweden, Canada, the US, China, Thailand, Hong Kong and Australia. Merren can even list Kazakhstanis among the many nationalities who have visited.

Matapihi, which grew out of the natural environment Merren says “we are lucky enough to have in Raglan”, is in practical terms the rural complement to the Raglan Childcare and Educational Centre she and Mike set up downtown on a shoestring budget many years earlier.

The Wallis Street centre was the result not of a dream so much as a need, says Merren who saw space for a more flexible alternative to the “sessional” programme run by traditional kindergartens at the time.

It was the early 90s and she was teaching at Raglan Kindergarten in Stewart Street, but had a gut instinct the time was right to

branch out and start up her own business.

Despite having had just 24 positive replies to a survey in the Chronicle asking if local parents would back another childcare option in town, it was “enough”.

With part-time staff Angela Kimber and Lindy Moir – both of whom work at Matapihi today – and “very small numbers”, Raglan’s first private pre-school centre got off the ground.

Merren says it was scary as she was the main breadwinner at the time, but “after a few months we had 10 children and were so excited”. It took years though, she recalls, for the venture to become a truly stable business.

In the early days Merren’s own family were her mainstay, Mike being the handyman and their three boys helping clean the centre after school. Youngest son Joel has since trained as a teacher himself and is one of two male staff members at Matapihi.

The addition of men to the teaching staff – in a female-dominated profession – has been a good development in both centres, Merren believes. They’re among the “huge number” of Raglan people trained in early childhood education from which she is able to draw quality staff.

And she’s in no doubt either that “the nature movement” slowly permeating the profession has contributed particularly to Matapihi’s success.

So too has the involvement of business partners Max King – who in taking over admin at the Wallis Street centre “allowed me to focus on Matapihi” – and more recently Angela who’s taught alongside Merren most of the 18 years she’s been in business.

“I never set it all up and felt (like) this is it,” Merren reveals now. “It’s always evolving and we haven’t finished yet … who knows where we’ll end up!”

Candidates meeting not a patch on the big fight

nyone hoping to see a good stoush downtown last Sunday afternoon would have found it only at the establishments showing the big “Fight of the Century” live.

By contrast the meet-thecandidates forum in the town hall was a largely placid affair in which the younger of the five community board hopefuls appeared to win endorsement from their more experienced rivals, one of whom devoted his allotted time to reading poetry.

To top off a meeting that just got curiouser and curiouser, a sometime council critic instead sprang stoutly to its defence and later there was a big round of applause for the work done by tireless council watchdog John Lawson, who was quietly minding his own business in the 30-strong audience and seemed embarrassed by the accolade.

Raglan Resident and Ratepayers chairman Bob McLeod, a sitting board member, got things rolling by inviting each by-election candidate to say a few words. First up was businesswoman and sports promoter Lisa Thomson, who urged creative thinking to find solutions to Raglan issues and wanted the Raglan

Community Board to have a “strong, transparent voice”. “It seems our voices overall are not being heard,” she said. One issue she singled out was sewage treatment: “When people say Raglan’s pumping I want it to be about the surf and not the sewage.”

Next to speak was former board chairman Peter Storey, who immediately made clear his main interest in putting his name forward was to see an election take place for the two seats. He pointed out the whole community board was appointed at the last triennial elections – because there were only enough candidates to fill the six seats – and that having more candidates than seats made for a better democratic process.

But he couldn’t resist a dig at the council hierarchy, saying staff were ”fond of ways to spend our money” and were too heavily into social engineering rather than developing infrastructure for basic council functions.

P J Haworth, who has a long background with Xtreme Zero Waste but now works at SuperValue, stressed the importance of community partnerships before asking a series of “rhetorical questions” ranging from why only one-third of Okete Road

residents can vote in community board elections to why the new James Street carparking had been “camouflaged”. He also asked, without expecting an answer, who paid the bills every time there was a hiccup with Raglan’s sewerage system.

Next speaker Kelly Clarkson joked that as she was pregnant there was one and a half of her to represent Raglan but then got serious about what she saw as a dire need for better communication channels. “The board is only as strong as its connection with the community,” she argued. She called for a board more representative of the community and also talked, like other candidates, of the continuing importance of the ‘Raglan Naturally’ exercise and document of the 1990s.

Final speaker Barry Ashby, who did not seek re-election to the board last time around because of ill health, used most of his allotted time reciting poems: one he’d written about the “musical loos” in town, and then a less audible composition on how “God created ACC” – one that reflected on his experiences with the much criticised corporation. But he also found a moment to emphasise his belief it was “always better to get a consensus decision … and to work

with council rather than against them”.

Question time covered a wide range of issues, one of them town development. Peter Storey questioned how so small a ratepayer base here could pay for the infrastructure needed when the town’s population swelled to 20,000 in summer, Barry Ashby said people needed to accept there were going to be a lot of three-storey buildings around town, and PJ also accepted growth of Raglan was inevitable and the board’s job would be to guide the process as best it could.

Other discussion covered how the community board could have its voice better heard, and how many believed the “Raglan Naturally” document had been largely ignored by council.

However former community board chair Rodger Gallagher, who’s often been heard to criticise the “curious ways of council”, said the document had been “completely audited” three years ago and argued

most of what it sought had in fact been done.

He said the relationship between council and community board had improved, citing board member participation at council committee meetings and also the council’s new community engagement process.

“They are trying to do better … the current council mood is to be much more consultative.”

The only fractious note to the meeting came when Malibu Hamilton cited negative comments made in the past by Peter Storey and asked him accusingly “why stand if you feel like that?”. However Peter reiterated he’d been concerned there might not be a by-election because of insufficient candidates.

“For my money I would definitely vote for these guys,” he said, indicating the three younger first-time candidates seated at the other end of the trestle tables. “The community is wisest to go for new blood.”

Health Clinic: Enrolment update The West Coast Health Clinic is currently updating enrolment details for ALL patients who are registered with us as we need to prove that each patient is entitled to publicly funded healthcare in NZ. Failure to do this will affect the funding that enables us to provide very low cost access care for our community so we are asking for your help with mammoth project.

In the last six months 1200 patients have updated their enrolment but we have another

3400 to complete!
