isborne’s Maz Quinn won his third consecutive event of the New Zealand Pro Series on Saturday, surfing to an emphatic win at the Rip Curl Pro presented

by Galbraith’s held at Manu Bay, Raglan.

Quinn was joined by Ella Williams (WGM) who won the Open Women’s Division and Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha) who won the Under 20 Boys Division today.

Raglan turned on the best conditions seen for an event in a long time with a clean 1.5m swell that saw nonstop waves rattle down the point of Manu Bay. The forecast gale force winds never eventuated, winds remaining light to moderate all day.

Quinn led the final from start to finish with his performance highlighted by a 9.1 point ride midway through the final that was a near perfect.

Quinn finished with a 16.9 point heat total to win his third event in a row after winning the South Island Champs and Canterbury Champs, also placing runner up at the National Championships in January.

“I took a lot of confidence from quarters and semis today” said Quinn after exiting the water.

“The wind turned just before the final and it was clean. Basically whoever got the best waves in the final was going to win” added Quinn who noted that his best wave came after his closest rival Kereopa could not paddle over the top of a double up allowing Quinn to take full advantage.

“Manu Bay turned it on for the comp, it was the best we have had for a while. Once the waves get overhead and clean, experience comes in to play and the big turns, so it is no surprise

Quinn defeated another stalwart of New Zealand surfing Bobby Hansen (Gis) who finished with a 15.37 point heat total.

Fresh back from Mexico was Daniel Kereopa, who has been competing on his stand up paddleboard internationally. Kereopa finished with a 14.03 point heat total ahead of Alex Dive (Mnt) in fourth with a score of 12.23.

Ella Williams claimed her first win of the New Zealand Pro Series in three years today taking out the Open Women’s Division over Australian based Sarah Mason.

Williams got off to a slow start in the final but came back with her aggressive approach attacking the lip on several occasions to post a 15.67 point heat total.

“It’s been a long time coming” said Williams after the final. “The waves at Raglan have been pumping today, this has been an awesome event and the girls field today was so good so I am glad to walk away with the win.”

Mason challenged Williams for the lead and a final wave that saw her sneak in to a small tube threatened a lead change but Mason came up just short. Placing third in the final was local surfer Jessica Santorik ahead of Auckland’s Gabriella Sansom in fourth.

Piha’s Elliot Paerata – Reid stole the win in the Under 20 Boys Division with a last second wave to edge out Paul Moretti (Mimiwhangata).

Placing third in the final was Kehu Butler (Mnt) who also posted a good 14.0 point heat total. Dune Kennings http://www.w (WGM) did not contest the final after injuring himself in the semifinals.

Weekend in elements with bonfire, snow and polar dip

R

aglan’s set to have both a hot and cold old time of things next month as Matariki and midwinter celebrations collide in fun, family events over the same weekend at Kopua Domain.

A bonfire on the beach near the skatepark heats things up on Friday June 19 to mark Matariki, which traditionally signals the Maori New Year. Called ahi whaakata or ‘fire of reflection’, it is a community get-together to which everyone’s invited, says Lisa Thomson from Raglan Chamber of Commerce, which is supporting the event.

Matariki is a time to reflect on the past year and look toward the future, she says – a time for karakia, songs and sharing of stories through old rituals.

“Burn a bundle of cabbage tree leaves (provided) and send a wish or a dream up to the stars,” she suggests.

Kites will also be flown in the domain during the weekend, an event symbolic of looking to the future.

From fire on the Friday night, there’s freezing fun to be had the following morning with ‘Snow on the Beach’ festivities up near the boat ramp.

There’ll be 12 tonnes of the white stuff – an actual “snowfield” – in which to frolic to celebrate the year’s shortest day. The event continues to grow in popularity, say Raglan House organisers who’ve co-ordinated it since 2012 and have funding support this year from

Waikato District Council, Raglan Lions and the Tindall Foundation.

The keen mountaineer was not long back from Nepal where, he said, he helped in recovery work following the recent earthquake devastation through the Himalayan Trust founded by his late father in the 1960s.

Peter endorsed the work of the Native Forest Restoration Trust in reversing New Zealand’s “environment of degradation”, and conserving our heritage generally.

He spoke of fostering pride in places like the Ed Hillary Hope Reserve and “bringing our young people here” to learn from the environment – a fitting sentiment given a large group of Hillary scholars from Waikato University were also at the gathering.

“If it (the reserve) becomes part of who we are then it has a future,” he insisted.

Founding NFRT trustee Geoff Davidson said the trust had now heaved a collective sigh of satisfaction at the opening of the reserve and had proudly – in the words of Sir Ed – “knocked the bastard off!”

The reserve has 180 hectares of established forest and 280 hectares of farmland that the trust says is “well suited” for restoration. Its proximity to both Raglan and Hamilton – flanking both sides of the deviation on SH23 and adjoining the Four Brothers Scenic Reserve – means the area will potentially have “great public access and high recreation value”, trust manager Sandy Crichton told the Chronicle before Saturday’s function.

It’s also the largest protected native bush block within 20 kilometres of Hamilton, and will be a major link in the regional council’s Halo project which aims to bring native birds such as tui and bellbirds back into Hamilton city where they once flourished.

The regional council contributed $500,000 to the purchase price of $1.36 million.

It is a special, supported environment created to allow families to focus on a child’s well-being. RMHA’s mission is to help keep families together and strong. RMHA aims to provide much more than a place to sleep, they provide a support programme that seeks to alleviate some of the practical, emotional and financial burdens that accompany the families.

Several Raglan families have had a child hospitalized in Auckland and therefore have had the support of the RMHA. We, the Frew family are one of those families as our son Cameron endured several complicated operations from 2010 – 2014. Words cannot express how grateful we were to know that no matter what happened, day or night there was a friendly face to talk to, food to feed us, and a room to rest in. Cameron is now 18 and we as a family are working with RMHA’s National Partner - Ray White, and their local office, Ray White Raglan to give back to the charity that gave us so much in our time of need.

We are hosting an Auction evening on Friday 5th June, 6pm at the office of Ray White Raglan and are asking our local community to support the RMHA charity who in turn continues to reach out to the families of Raglan and the entire country.

resh from their critically acclaimed at the recent National Jazz Festival in Tauranga, Raglan based Raglan West Coast Jazz are performing at the Old Zealand SchoolNew Arts Centre this Saturday May 30th starting at 7.30 p.m.

West Coast Jazz is made up of local musicians featuring Greg Taylor (piano), Jack Porima (bass), Freddy Limbert (drums), Bill Forrest (saxophone), and Grant Mason (trumpet/flugelhorn).

The band started several years ago with Jack Porima and Greg Taylor jamming on a Sunday afternoon. A chance meeting at a gig with Bill Forrest added a saxophonist to the mix. Next to join was Freddy Limbert who is a phenomenal drummer and show all on his own. Grant Mason, on trumpet completed the line-up.

Bill Forrest and Grant Mason have played together as a horn section in various line-ups for over 20 years and deliver an exceptional blend of sound that only years of playing together can bring.

The Old School Arts Centre performance will include several original compositions from Greg Taylor and Grant Mason who are both accomplished Jazz composers.

Come along to the Old School this Saturday, May 30th for a sublime evening of Jazz originals and standards by West Coast Jazz.

I was brought up as the youngest of 6 in a Christian home in Northland but at 12 years old my childhood faith was shaken considerably when I lost my mother to cancer. My father remarried less than a year later and I spent my teenage years questioning God and life, especially as I lost 4 more close family members and then my father before I was 20.

I met and married Bevan quite young and began teaching, both in New Zealand and Samoa. We moved to Waitetuna in 2004 and started raising our family - 4 children who are between ages 11 and 3.

Parenthood has definitely been the most rewarding and most challenging time of my life, bringing me to the edge of both despair and joy. It has also given me a glimpse of how much God longs for personal relationship with us. That all consuming, lay

down your life kind of love that I feel for my children is how God feels about us all.

Through my whole life God has been with me, even when I am not looking for Him. When I think of my past and tell myself that, “I’m strong, I can do life with just me and my family, I don’t need God,” I find that even my best laid plans go awry. I end up hurting myself and others and feeling that “God shaped hole” in my soul again.

But I have learned that God is faithful, He never ever gives up or goes away, no matter what. He is love, and no matter what I do or go through He will love me anyway, as a parent loves their child. He gives me freedom to choose the way I live, and though I will never ever be perfect, each day I choose faith, hope and most of all love.

Thinking About a Winter Getaway?

When the clocks change and the woolly jumpers come out, many of us consider chasing the sun. A well-deserved holiday can be just the thing to stay motivated through the remainder of the short, cold days of winter. In the excitement of planning an overseas adventure, it is not always easy to remember to think about the environment.

Here are a few things to consider before booking a ticket.

Destination: Paradise?

A couple of years ago 11x surfing world champion, Kelly Slater, tweeted “If Bali doesn’t #DoSomething serious about its pollution, it’ll be impossible to surf here in a few years. Worst I’ve ever seen.” He was referring to the growing pollution issues mounting in and out of the water: reports of trash fires in rice fields, sewage dumped into waterways and large scale plastic pollution encroaching on beaches and into the ocean.

Without effective waste minimization, recycling and disposal plans, places like Bali are not able to cope with the demands of a growing tourism economy. Alternatively, many developing countries have recognized pollution will affect their social and economic welfare and have put measures in place to minimize harm.
