Whilst this event was primarily designed to deliver a strong message against bullying in schools, the Raglan Community Violence Prevention and Awareness Group wanted to support Pink Shirt Day and help to reinforce the message that we do not want violence of any kind in our community.

Sadly rain forced the cancellation of the March by the children through town and the whole event was staged at Raglan Area School but the sea of pink in the school hall was a wonderful sight.

Many in our business community actively supported this event by decorating their shop windows and there were masses of balloons and pink bunting decorating our town - pink shirts, jumpers, ribbons and hair were also the order of the day! Thank you all for getting behind this event and visitors in town on the day all wanted to know "what goes with the pink?"

Special thanks to: Super Value for their support through the Community Cash fund which helped us to deliver over 360 sausage sizzles; Hamilton Party Hire for their donation of 200 pink balloons and the Community House team for their sausage cooking / mayonnaise spreading / tomato sauce squirting skills!

It has happened again! Our little yellow clinker look dinghy has broken it’s moorings in Puriri Bay and has gone absent without leave.

It has been there for a decade, and this is the 3rd occasion it has done a runner, only to be found and returned by the good people of Raglan.

It is probably the most photographed and painted dinghy in Raglan.

My heart is heavy.

Should anyone discover, or know the whereabouts of it that would bring great big globby bits of happiness to a lot of people.

The bay looks empty without it.

Xtreme Waste eyes Raglanwide rollout of food scraps initiative

Xtreme Waste hopes to roll out its latest service – collecting food scraps – to the whole town early next year now that a successful trial covering 100-odd Raglan West households is complete.

And it wants to make the service “as affordable as possible to the householders”, says project manager Liz Stanway who is delighted with the outcome of the seven-month trial, which began last July in the wake of a feasibility study.

But to take the third step and implement the service town-wide Xtreme Waste aims to first secure more funding from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund (WMF), making the rollout a partnership between Xtreme Waste, WMF and the Waikato District Council, says Liz. “It has to be practical and affordable, and be seen to have a future, for the funds to be available” she explains. “But we should be in with a good chance (for funding) now we’re up to that third stage and the trials were successful.”

Meantime Xtreme Waste is working hard on the figures and options for a town-wide service and has committed to keeping the free collection of food scraps going in the four Raglan West streets following good feedback from householders there.

Residents of Nihinihi, Taipari, Uenuku and Pokohui Avenue leave lockable bins full of bagged food scraps at the kerb each week alongside their rubbish bags and green recycling containers.

They also have a smaller kitchen bin or caddy lined with a biodegradable cornstarch bag, proven oversees to store waste without becoming smelly.

Those using this system are “absolutely amazed” how the bags really do stop any smell, says Liz. The system’s so user-friendly that Xtreme Waste is now confident the whole town can be included in the project, “if we get funding”.

Nationally there’s been a lot of interest in Raglan’s trial as an example of a small town dealing with its waste issues locally”, says Liz, “because there’s a big push nationally to get food waste out of landfills.”

On average it accounts for 45 percent of the waste across the nation. When food is put in the landfilI it makes methane which Liz describes as “the worst greenhouse gas, worse than carbon dioxide”.

However Raglan’s feasibility study showed a lower average of 37 percent food waste going to the landfill, reflecting greater local environmental consciousness.

Liz says another great success of the trial collection has been Xtreme

Waste’s ability to learn and practice how to make great compost. The trial was also helpful in indicating the volume of food scraps Xtreme Waste can expect from across town each week. “We have to be able to handle it (truck-wise), Liz pointed out, “and we have to have enough green waste to mix with compost.”

‘We’re very happy with the results” says Liz “Our locally made product meets national compost standards. We’ve seived and bagged it and made it available, as part of the trial project, from Raglan’s recycle centre in Te Hutewai Road."

Sales of the compost will help keep initiatives such as future food waste collections going.

Private investors to part-own windfarm The Te Uku windfarm, a project conceived by a Waikato community-owned lines company, looks set to be partly foreign-owned by the end of year following the Government’s confirmation in the Budget that Meridian Energy is the next state-owned enterprise to go on the block.

The multimillion-dollar windfarm project, designed and largely nursed through resource consent

by Wel Energy Trust-owned Wel Networks, developed first into a joint venture with – and then before the first turbine turned had become fully owned by – Christchurch-based Meridian.

As expected the Government revealed in last week’s Budget that Meridian would be the next stateowned energy company to be partially privatised, with Finance Minister Bill English describing the move as “a natural follow-on” from the recent Mighty River Power float.

And as happened with Mighty River Power, 49 percent of Meridian will be offered to New Zealand and overseas investors.

But while opposition parties are predicting power prices will rise as Meridian shares are snapped up by “foreigners and the wealthy” – and Labour and the Greens have already promised sweeping changes to the structure of the country’s electricity industry if they take power together at the next election – no-one locally can argue the Meridian sell-off or yet another

change in the ownership of the Te Uku windfarm comes as any surprise.

At the opening of the $200 million venture high on the Whauraroa Plateau in February of last year, Prime Minister John Key told reporters he made no apology for seeing the windfarm as potentially an asset for sale under National’s stated policy of looking to privatise up to 49 percent of New Zealand’s largest electricity generators.

Meanwhile a post-Budget announcement about breakfast in schools is likely to have a more immediate and direct effect locally.

As a decile 4 school, Raglan Area School would benefit by the Government’s expected extension to five mornings of a current twomornings-a-week breakfast scheme spearheaded by Fonterra and Sanitarium.

Raglan is one of nearly 600 decile 1-4 schools around the country which regularly serve up cereals to their students, in the area school’s case from its food technology room.

Another recent Government move, this time a legislative one, won’t be so favourably received

locally. Parliament pushed through under urgency last weekend a bill which cracks down on protests against offshore oil exploration.

Raglan activists have been in the thick of protests against oil exploration and seabed mining in recent years, but now face a law under which they can be jailed for up to 12 months or fined up to $50,000 if they are found to have crossed the line. Protest groups can potentially be fined up to $100,000.

And Xavier, a Wintec eco-design and visual arts lecturer who inspired the project in 2007, says “it is good to bring it home”.

Entitled ‘Aotearoa Liberators’, the collection of 12 posters in all – to be exhibited on each side of moveable wall panels – has been shown only briefly in Raglan before, he says, during a festival at the kokiri centre a few years ago.

But the collection has travelled over the years to several places including Cuba where the posters were screenprinted by hand, Mexico from where Xavier originates and Spain’s Museum of Illustration in Valencia.

In New Zealand the posters have been exhibited in Christchurch, at Waikato Museum, on Waiheke Island and at the Parihaka International Peace Festival on the Taranaki coast.

Now they’re here to stay as they’ll remain in the Raglan Museum’s safekeeping once the month-long exhibition ends.

Each of the posters has an accompanying story to tell, Xavier explains.

One of his own works, Tane Mahuta, tells the story of the creator in Maori history, while Jenny Rhodes – who was close to Raglan’s Eva Rickard – tells of the late Maori activist’s fight to have the land which was confiscated by the Government for an aerodrome during World War Two returned to her people.

Some of that land was finally returned in 1984, six years after Eva’s arrest; the remainder is still an airstrip.

Other artists to contribute works were Josh Watene, Dion Hitchens, James Orsmby, Tessa Laird, Simon Cuming, Leafa Wilson, Warren Olds and Nicola Farquhar.

Raglan & District Museum Society president Pat Day told the Chronicle the exhibition had a lot to do with Raglan and, though it was not an art museum, he believes it was “appropriate” to now exhibit the collection here.

And Katerina Matira’s work of renowned artist, the late Ralph Hotere, tells of his protest paintings and of his rejection of all violence against humanity and the environment.

The collection, sponsored by Wintec, was a direct response to Xavier’s invitation to artists in Aotearoa to design a poster and write a text about a liberator or activist in the country whose work resonated personally with them.

It's the talk of the town that our Aaron Brunet has made it into the final three on Masterchef New Zealand. And now the question is, can he go all the way.

In Sundays show, the Top Four contestants faced the ultimate invention test – cooking whatever they liked, with whatever ingredients they liked.

Performing for not only for the MasterChef judges, they also faced a very hard taskmaster: guest judge Ben Bayly, executive chef of award-winning Auckland restaurant The Grove.

Aaron embraced the challenge and took a risk by combining liver and lamb which the judges commented they had never seen before. "The judges certainly seem a bit mystified by the idea of lamb and liver together and the also by the pear and cheese puree. It's an invention test so I'm inventing left, right and centre and I just hope it works out" said Aaron.

The judges were indeed mystified "It's either

When Aaron presented his unusual dish to the judges they were initially critical of his presentation "it's a strange dish" they said, "it's way out there" After he walked away to allow them to sample his dish Aaron commented " I'm just hoping that once they start tasting the frowns turn to smiles. It's definitely nerve raking but sometimes you have to take a risk to get a payoff."

Ben summed it up .."Theres something in my logical brain that disagrees with the dish but there's something in my subconscious brain that really agrees. It reminds me of something my grandmother

would cook. I think it tastes yummy" said Ben It was good news for Aaron. The judges all agreed that Aarons dish was "the most thought provoking dish they had tasted" on Masterchef. They praised him for pushing the boundaries. "you were so inventive it took a while to put that in words" said Josh.

Vanessa Baxter became the thirteenth contestant from the Top 16 to leave MasterChef New Zealand which leaves Aaron, Paula and Kelly to battle it out in the kitchen.

Stitch Ministry brings Animal Health Column creative threads together For Raglan People + their Pets Getting together religiously every month has proved inspirational for a “ministry” of Raglan women who take the age-old tradition of home handicrafts seriously – even if they do stop for the odd coffee and a chat along the way.

They believe creativity is to be celebrated so take along whatever they need – from sewing machines and weaving looms to crochet hooks and knitting needles – and with a bit of help and encouragement from one another complete projects which otherwise could well get left unfinished in their busy lives.

“It’s amazing how much you learn (together),” says group member Vicky Beeby, who’s wanting to encourage others to come along to the Union Church hall in Stewart Street and take part in what’s become an easy exchange of ideas and inspiration.

There’s still room on the tables for a few more

sewing machines, she adds.

Stitch Ministry Raglan, as the group’s called, turn out quilts and cushions, dress-ups for the kids and plenty more. “It’s varied what people make,” says Vicky.

But most of it uses recycled materials and sustainable practices – it’s more about using what’s at hand rather than taking a trip to Spotlight in Hamilton, explains Vicky. Some basics though, like buttons and bric-a-brac, are available at the church hall.

The group grew out of the successful SEWvember months of the past two years, says Vicky, when everybody involved just wanted to do more creative handicrafts.

It’s also an “outreach”, Vicky points out, so if there’s ever a need for the likes of baby blankets or mastectomy recovery pillows Stitch Ministry’s sure to rise to the occasion.

Stitch Ministry meets the last Thursday of every month, 7-10pm.

New owners for iconic restaurant A well known local family the Valentes have taken over the iconic Raglan café Vinnies.

"We have a lot of vision and exciting plans ” says Sandy Valente who, though she’s been a regional relief St John Ambulance officer most recently, worked in hospitality years ago.

Reggie Valente nicknamed Hobbit since he was 17, and better known around town for his ‘Hobbit Decorating’ service – is a dab hand at making the breads and pizzas for which Vinnies is renowned. Reggie and Sandy are not giving too much away at this stage but say "there'll be more surprises to come."

Meantime former owner Vito Cardo reckons he’s “had a good run” with the café he took over six years ago from Tony Bruce, who ran the business only briefly after buying it from renowned Whale Bay restaurateur Colin Chung.

Colin remains busy with his own catering and consulting business here and in the Pacific Islands.

For the affable, surf-loving Vito – who was a lawyer in the States before bringing his young family to Raglan – it’s now time to do something different, and he’s confident he’s sold to “the right people”.

Vito himself was feeling particularly liberated last week when the Chronicle phoned because the orcas had just been in the harbour – and for once he was free to go see them.

It’s a wild life The Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund charity has close to 3 decades of what could be described as a “colourful” history in the Raglan community.

It was started, way back when, by Betty Hart- a founding member of the Cats Protection League (CPL) in the North Island who was based in Hamilton, and Bunch Hill- who managed the Raglan branch of the CPL. They were joined by Donna Rickardshe and Bunch managed the Raglan sector out of their own homes with cat cages filling sunrooms and deck areas. Stray cats were trapped and either rehomed or euthanised. This was funded by the CPL and fundraising initiatives.

Older locals may remember Bunch’s smiling face at her car boot sales outside the butcher shop on weekends.

After a battle with cancer, Betty passed away, leaving Donna and Bunch to manage the Raglan branch of CPL. In 1990, Donna joined the team at Raglan Vet Clinic, working for Ross Loveridge. Out of good will, Ross allowed Donna to use the clinic premises to treat stray animals. Ross understood that as an animal welfare-focused business and part of a small community, the clinic had a certain amount of responsibility to prevent suffering in stray animals and wildlife.

A few years later Shane Massey joined the team and he took on the veterinary treatment of the stray animals and wildlife, often taking hawks home and caring for them. Bunch gradually stepped back from the CPL and later moved away, leaving Donna and Shane to care for the waifs and strays. At this point the organization was renamed the “Stray Cat Fund” and the CPL parted company. As years went by, the Raglan Vet Clinic and the Stray Cat Fund became synonymous. The Stray Cat Fund

has carried on in this way ever since, and when Anexa took over in 2007, they supported it to continue operating.

Moana Robb joined the team in 2009, and the Stray Cat Fund took on a new lease of life. It was renamed “The Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund” as Moana’s special interest in wildlife has seen an increase of wildlife diagnosed and treated in the clinic, aided by association with Massey University’s wildlife ward, DOC wildlife rehabilitation specialists and specialist vets who provide a wealth of knowledge. Her creation of our “Anexa Animal Health Raglan” facebook page has enabled the community to feel more involved with our daily activities, animals available for adoption, lost and found animals, and care of interesting wildlife patients. A change of our desexing policy has seen a reduction of stray cats over a 2year period and targeted trapping has reduced isolated populations of feral cats.

The ongoing support the Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund receives from the Raglan community is heartwarming, and we would like to thank everyone who has been involved over the years.

Raglan residents will soon have access to a library of tools for community planting projects, assisted by a grant of $1500 from Meridian Energy.

“Raglan is geographically isolated, and this pushes up the cost of fresh produce” says Michele Frank, Chair of the Whaingaroa Environment Centre.

“By planting fruit and vegetables locally in backyards and community spaces we can offer an affordable source of food, helping to improve the wellbeing of our community.

We’re grateful for Meridian’s support for the tool library, and we’re really looking forward to planting more local produce” says Michele.

Learning to swim will be much easier in the cooler months, with a grant of $7,000 from Meridian to purchase a cover for the Raglan Area School Pool. “Currently the pool is unusable for most of the year, and our children are missing out on vital water safety training” says Melanie Brydon, Chair of the Raglan Swimming Club.

“Raglan kids love the water, so it’s important we give them the best opportunity to improve their swimming skills in a safe environment. Thanks to Meridian we can now purchase a pool cover will keep the water warm, allowing us to extend the swimming season” says Melanie Over $17,000 has been granted in the latest allocation from Meridian Energy’s Te Uku Community Fund. “We continue to see a good range of high

quality of applications to the Fund” says Hamish Scott, Te Uku Site Manager and Chair of Meridian’s Te Uku Community Fund. “It’s great to see the number of projects making a real difference to the communities of Te Uku, Raglan, Waitetuna and Te Mata. Meridian is proud to support these sorts of initiatives” says Hamish. $120,000 has been made available to local community initiatives over the next three years through the Te Uku Community Fund. Funding allocations are managed by a panel of community representatives and Meridian staff.

In the past Meridian’s Community Funds have supported a diverse range of projects including environmental conservation, volunteer emergency services, schools, education programs, and heritage restoration.

Projects supported in this round of Meridian’s Te Uku Community Fund include: Raglan Community Patrol Charitable Trust- $1000. Whaingaroa Environmental Centre - $1500*.
