To the Editor, We would like to thank the Raglan community for their support and help in fundraising for the Fire Service Sky Tower Stair Climb Challenge this year.

Our Raglan Team fundraised $4,214.

Spaces available now A total of $873,030 was fundraised nationwide. All proceeds went to the Leukemia and Blood Cancer NZ Foundation. A special thanks to the Raglan Pharmacy and Raglan Creative “We have excellent ratios with 100% Market for letting us fundraise outside trained staff offering an exceptional your premises. Also, a huge thanks to educational programm.”

We all completed the 51 Floors, 1,103 steps carrying our 25kg of fire service attire. The race went well with John Oetzel having an outstanding time of 13:42min, with Steve O’Byrne on his heels with 13:59. Both these guys bettered their times from last year. Brett Soanes had a fantastic first time run completing it in 17:25mins. Unfortunately I had a terrible race with my worse time yet of 21:24min. The joys of motherhood taking their toll on the start line with a total offorecasts 3hrs broken sleep before the race.

While we recognise that it is important and appropriate for organisers to acknowledge those people who have contributed to a successful event, the ‘letters section’ of a newspaper is not the right forum for this.

No fronds mean farewell to one Bow Street palm

One the way out: storm damaged phoenix palm will be removed and not replaced

A

storm-damaged phoenix palm that was set to be removed from the Bow Street centre strip this week is unlikely to be replaced because of possible damage to an also protected pohutukawa – a tree which, coincidentally, could well be one of those a local identity chained herself to in the 1960s to prevent their felling.

The palm – the closest to the harbour of the 15 which give Raglan’s main street its distinctive appearance – lost its head and all its leaves in a big blow recently, leaving only a few epiphyte plants and birds nests at the top.

And although Waikato District Council confirmed a few years back it had some younger phoenix palms growing in Raglan West’s Oram Park as replacements for any Bow Street palms which died, the council says that is unlikely in this case because the damaged tree shares root space with the adjacent pohutukawa.

But there is a glimmer of hope for people wanting to see Bow Street keep its full complement of the iconic palms: the council says it won’t make a final decision until the damaged palm has been taken down “and the

area assessed again”.

On Monday the council’s parks team said it still did not have a confirmed day for the work, which was to be carried out by a contractor.

While there appeared early this week to have been no adverse reaction to the impending felling of the phoenix palm, that was certainly not the case back in the ’60s when the then Raglan County Council began cutting down trees in the centre strip.

According to a town walk brochure produced by the Whaingaroa Heritage Network, local baker Connie Stephens “chained herself to the trees at the harbour end of Bow Street and stopped removal of the remaining trees”.

There has been an assumption in some recent articles that she was trying to save the phoenix palms, but a radio interview John Lawson recorded with the late Connie Stephens in 2004 makes clear that it was the pohutukawa at risk.

She said in the interview that the council began cutting down the pohutukawa between the palm trees one Wednesday afternoon when everyone went to Hamilton because it was Raglan’s early closing day. The next morning

her daughter – working to get the rural delivery away – saw council workers back on the job and came to warn her.

Connie revealed that with a Mrs Gibbison and a Mrs Barford she then took her protest action, a stand which cost them 300 pounds when a Councillor Bill Bates took them to court but which resulted in the registration of the remaining trees to protect them.

John Lawson believes – after studying old photographs – that in the end only two pohutukawa may have been cut down, in the area between the Wainui Road T-junction and the town hall.

The centre strip trees have their origin in 1922 when the then governor-general’s wife, Lady Jellicoe, unveiled the downtown war memorial and said how beautiful the temporary pongas were. The next meeting of the town board approved the planting of palms and pohutukawa down the middle of Bow Street.

In 2007 townsfolk threatened to chain themselves to the trees after the Waikato Times ran an alarmist “frond farewell” headline over a story quoting council staff as suggesting the town needed to plan for the replacement of the phoenix palms. A.T

Help your community and become a volunteer S to assist its ambulance services in Raglan t John is looking for additional volunteers

and surrounding communities.

“Volunteering with St John is a commitment that many people find rewarding,” St John Raglan Station Manager Bush Barton explains.

Ambulance volunteers are involved in a variety of work ranging from emergency life and death scenarios to assisting with patient transfers to and from hospital.

Prospective volunteers need to have a current driver’s licence and first aid certificate. Volunteers receive St John driver and pre-hospital emergency care training and success in these courses can lead to further training as an Ambulance Officer funded

by St John.

For Raglan volunteer Andrea Gilshnan volunteering with St John provides an opportunity to do something for her community.

“I’ve lived in Raglan for 38 years and been a volunteer Ambulance Officer for 14 years. For me it’s been rewarding. I encourage anybody who has a similar interest in helping provide a well needed service in your own community to volunteer with St John.” Andrea says.

For Emergency Medical Technician Tony Agar, retiring from life in London led to a new life in Raglan and fresh challenges with St John.

“I moved to Raglan with my family in 2008 after retiring from the fire service in London. I joined St John because I wanted to be part of an organisation that helped others. It’s great to know you can make a difference in a person’s life by being there when they most need you. The skills you learn and the training you receive is vital. Every call is a different challenge and you never know what to expect.” Tony says.

Backed by a team of dedicated volunteers the spirit of volunteering is alive and well at St John in Raglan.

The 33-year-old chef can’t quite believe her win in the best original recipe category of Saveur’s Best Food Blog Awards, and that she’s flying to Vegas courtesy of the influential American food magazine along with winners not only from the States but also from the likes of London and Canada.

“I still feel like my blog is relatively small,” she admits, but the fact the winners were picked from more than 30,000 blogs worldwide makes her very proud.

As a mother of two youngsters with food allergies, Emma had just started blogging her gluten and dairyfree recipes back in 2010 when the Chronicle first caught up with her at home in Cross Street. She’d earlier borrowed renowned blogger Heidi Swanson’s book from the Raglan Library.

“That’s what got me onto food blogs in the first place and is what inspired me to start my own,” Emma emailed this week from Perth where she and her Vietnamese- Australian

husband Si Nguyen and their children now live.

Emma’s now looking forward to meeting many of the biggest names of international blogging. “These awards are like the Grammys of the food blogging world.”

And she’s extending her stay in the States to 10 days to catch up with bloggers and authors – including her “hero” Heidi Swanson – in person.

“Thankfully our kids are now at a stage where they are okay with me being away from them for a little while,” she says of her small family, who until three years ago all lived in Raglan where Emma herself was raised.

Emma last month enjoyed a fleeting visit back home to launch at The Herbal Dispensary her first cookbook, whose title is borrowed from her popular mydarlinglemonthyme.com blog. But it was not enough time to enjoy a walk on Ngarunui Beach, she laments, or to paddleboard in the harbour out from the silos where her dad Rob lives.

However she did get to catch up with the “like-minded community” she misses. She was also captured on camera with 2013 NZ MasterChef winner Aaron Brunet and babywhisperer Sharlene Poole – two other Raglanders with first books to their credit.

And she got to “overdose” on feijoas which’ve been in plentiful supply around town of late. “I would kill for a feijoa tree out back (in Perth),” she quips. Edith Symes

First student to graduate from Let’s Grow L

et’s Grow held its first graduation ceremony last Friday (May 16) honoring 5 year-old Bailee Smith; the first student to graduate from the local preschool.

With a graduation song playing, wearing a gown, and even receiving a diploma, Bailee was all smiles. After the ceremony, everyone in attendance stood up and shook the young graduate’s hand, and wished her good luck on the road ahead.

Teachers at Let’s Grow made sure the passage to school was marked in style.

Melanie Dawson – Smith, the student’s mother, was filled with pride during the ceremony. “I cannot believe how fast the time has gone by,” she said. “But Bailee is definitely ready for school. She is ready for the next step.”

Dawson – Smith said that her daughter has completely changed since she started at Let’s Grow. ”I am amazed about all the

things she has learned in such a short time,” she stated. “Bailee has really matured and she comes home excited about learning new things.”

Alice Marsh, Let’s Grow preschool teacher, said that it’s important to make the transition from preschool into first grade as smooth as possible. The process of school readiness involves laying the foundation with various important practical life skills as well as academic confidence, she explained. “We want the children to feel ready for school, “she said. “We make it fun and engaging but we try to get as much learning in as possible.”

Marsh stated that academics can easily be integrated with play. “Play gives the children an opportunity to drive their own learning and it also allows them to work on their social skills.”

experiences to come. “Our students are moving on to a higher level of education,” she said. “But they take with them lots of accomplishments from here and making a big deal about it can build their confidence.”

is custom-made native timber tables are all the rage with Aucklanders but Will Worsp could scarcely work in more unpretentious surroundings – a farm shed across the causeway, or rickety footbridge if the tide’s in, on Raglan West’s Rangitaha Peninsula.

The 32 year old’s been making his stylish, functional tables there from reclaimed wood for about a year now, while also promoting his brand WRW & Co – William Rupert Worsp – with design stores in Auckland.

It’s a bit of a walk up the gravel road to the old, brown shed – or a short drive if the tide’s low enough and your vehicle high enough off the ground to negotiate the bumpy causeway.

Inside, the shed seems surprisingly large – cluttered on one side with tools of the trade and tables in various stages of construction, lighter and brighter on the other side of a dividing wall and more like a showroom with an office in one corner.

This was Raglan Surf Co’s surfboardshaping factory until recently but Will’s given it over to straight and chunky rather than curved and smooth lines, crafting large dining tables which he says are a “simple design, not complex” and “focused on quality, form and function”.

He started off in a nearby woolshed he

reckons was “cool” but terrible for building tables with “birds shitting, one power plug and nothing level”.

Now he’s moving on creatively in a way the one-time Te Akau farm boy could never have imagined.

His furniture with its trademark steel legs supporting table-tops of native timber – made from boards sometimes arranged widthways for effect – is attracting rave reviews in design magazines and on Facebook, which Will admits is a good marketing tool.

Says one satisfied customer: “I love that each piece is unique and it looks like the solid made-to-last kind of furniture that is well worth investing in.”

Will, at 32, has definitely stumbled upon – almost by accident – that niche market.

His dining tables start from around $2000, somewhere between top and bottom of the market. Before WRW & Co there was either Studio Italia or Freedom Furniture, he explains.

Each piece is custom-made: the client chooses the timber with its natural scars and defects either from Will’s collection of old weatherboards, kauri, rimu and the like or from old wood of their own.

Will’s also open to their ideas over the finishes, colours, forms and dimensions.

Just the other weekend he drove an Auckland couple over the causeway in his old van to discuss a “quite large custom desk

left it on the other side. Ideally, Will says, he’d like a good Land Rover or similar to transport discerning clients across.

Will does all the “fiddly detail stuff” in the workshop, including putting on the steel legs he gets from other suppliers. “I finish them (the tables) up here,” he says, which means the hand-sanding, final surface coatings and other processes.

He has support in his venture from local German cabinetmakers Andreas Broring and Bjorn Ledwig. They showed him the technicalities of making table-tops, and now let him use their large workshop filled with the bigger machinery – like a thicknesser or planer – for the early stages of the process.

So how did Will get into the venture? He returned from London at the end of 2012 and picked up on one of his earlier ideas during a trip back to Raglan where parents Simon and Rosie have a holiday home.

“I’d built a table for the bach,” he explains. At friends’ suggestion he then did a few more, an Auckland store took the tables on consignment and almost immediately he had orders to fill.

After that final overseas stint he returned to working with wood.

“I decided on tables because I love food and wine,” he says. And big tables because they’re a focal point, he adds. “l like the idea of having 10 people around a rugged, rough timber table.”

Now he has his first exhibition coming up at Allpress Gallery, behind Auckland’s Victoria Market, from June 30 to July 12.

“It’s a way to showcase what I can do.”

He has about a dozen tables on the go plus a few bedside, coffee and consol tables “and maybe some shelving”.

There’s a heart rimu dining table, featuring old cattleyard rails, and a kauri slab table nearly three metres long with a bowtie key feature in the workmanship.

“I’ve always loved design and designing,” says Will. “And I always liked architecture … that creative side.”

But it’s been a long, roundabout journey to get to where he is now. Art school and working in the film industry as a set dresser and buyer were followed by years of travel adventures – much of it on superyachts – and then interior design work overseas.

He says his travels remain a major source of inspiration. “All this time at sea and weekends sifting around the stunning cities of Europe – it was great help to my design reference folder and research development progress.” Edith Symes

Old school gig at Raglan Club If you remember back to the days of C’MON, Happen Inn and Freeride then the name Shane will take you right back to those fledgling days of music television in this country.

Shane Hales, known then and now as Shane has dedicated his life to writing, recording and performing great music, with hits like Cuddly Toy, Natural Man and kiwi classic St Paul to name a few. He’s just recently released his latest critically acclaimed CD “Full Circle’ earning him the Variety Artists Club supreme award “The Benny”. His TV show “The Beat Goes On’ has run up a staggering 250 shows and this year he also hosts his own weekly show ‘Rocking The Planet’.

tribute to Cliff Richard and the Shadows are four seriously motivated Rock ‘n Rollers – ‘The Shadz’ Drummer Garry Betti formed the group about 18 months ago.

“I thought there was an audience and age group who would love a ‘Shadows’ tribute band. All the guys as well as Shane are huge Shadows fans,” Garry says.

“We’re really looking forward to playing at Raglan Club. We did a show at Tauranga not long ago and it was a sell-out, and we’re expecting another big night at Raglan.

Waikato District Council has revealed work will begin next Tuesday to permanently repair the slip damage on Wainui Road, just before the Manu Bay turnoff.

The council says the tender has been awarded to Transfield Services and expects the work to take about four weeks.

The security presence at Manu Bay has intrigued locals, who’ve been saying on Facebook this week that traffic lights must be expensive if a security guard can be paid $16 an hour – someone asked him how much he was getting – to prevent the lights being “bullied and pushed around”.

e may be a new face to some in the district, but local tradesman painter Jason Ahern has a family history in Te Mata spanning back four generations – and he wants to give back to the community he has always called home.

He recently returned to Te Mata, after a 12 year stint in the Deep South – six of those years running a painting and decorating firm – with his wife and three children.

He says his last business, based in the Western Southland town of Nightcaps, saw him working on restoration projects of mainly old styled houses for dairy farm conversions.

“There had been no maintenance for a long time on these old villas and bungalows and I gained a lot of experience working on old weather- board homes.”

However, his experience isn’t limited to just old houses.

“While down south, I took on projects for local schools and a restoration project for the Southland Heritage Building and Preservation Trust.”

Before moving to Southland, Jason worked on upmarket projects in Perth for seven years with a very reputable company.

“We did all sorts including restoration of the Palace Hotel, right in middle of Perth, work for the Premier, and new apartments and penthouses.”

Jason is a fully qualified painter and completed his apprenticeship in Perth in the mid-90’s where he says a high standard of workmanship was always expected.

“This has helped me professionally by always maintaining a constant level and reliable standard of workmanship.”

When Jason grew up his family ran a small farm up Munns Road in Te Mata and his father, Don Ahern, was a builder in the Whaingaroa district for over 16 years.
