President of the Association Tania Lattaney said the idea for the afternoon tea came about when she and Association Secretary Pat Marfleet began to think about mothers who can’t be with their children on the special day.

“We wanted to do something to mark the fact that no matter how old you are, you never stop being a mother. Some of these women have family living overseas or some distance away in New Zealand so we thought about doing something special for them together”, says Tania.

For Esma Ansley, born 90 years ago in the little cottage that still stands opposite the Area School; the

afternoon tea provided an opportunity to catch up with friends. Tea was served in fine bone china cups and the scones and other goodies, made by Raglan Caterers Richard and Raewyn Lorigan were served up by three very helpful waiters, Rob Nicol, Andy Millar, and Richard Lattaney.

The table had been prepared beautifully by Tania, complete with little posies and a small spray of flowers for each lady present.

“It’s just our way to do something nice for these mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

It’s appropriate we held it at the fire station because years ago the Senior Citizens Association was involved in fundraising for the building.”

Judging by the success of the day’s ‘tea moment’ there’s a very good chance the celebration will become a regular event on the Senior Citizens Association calendar.

And the final verdict regarding the standard of service from the assembly gathered, “we think the men have done really well though perhaps the dress-code could be improved.”

Erosion project meets match in Mother Nature

Raglan firefighter Dirk De Ruysscher has really stepped up these past few years when it comes to the annual Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland – but now he’s had enough.

Dirk was one of five firefighters from Raglan who last Saturday tackled the tower’s 1103 steps, wearing full firefighting kit weighing 25kg, to raise money and awareness for Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

It was his third but also he reckons his last time climbing the 51 flights as fast as possible for the national fundraiser.

Both fundraising and training demand a lot of time and he’s now a bit “over it”, he told the Chronicle this week.

The five locals – the others were first-timers Stephen O’Byrne and John Oetzel, and second-timers Nigel McLeod and Raymond Bailey – have

raised nearly $4000 through social media, and by getting donations outside Raglan Pharmacy and Bunnings in Hamilton.

They’ve also practised for the event twice-weekly since February by racing up and down Bridal Veil Falls’ 260 steps four times over at about six in the morning.

Not that the gruelling training regime hasn’t paid off: each of the five completed the Sky challenge in somewhere between 13 and 18 minutes. And for Dirk it was a personal best of 15min 40sec after his previous 17-minute efforts.

It’s certainly “exhausting”, Dirk admits, but that’s apparently how tired anyone with leukemia would feel all the time.

The Raglan team was one of more than 50 to compete, and in all some 550 firefighters took on this year’s challenge.

As the Chronicle observed a few months ago, shifting sand about on an exposed and erosion-prone stretch of beach is a dicey task at the best of times.

And there’s now been a setback to the recent project to reshape and replant the sandbank that forms a natural barrier between the strong tidal currents and the overlooking picnicking area at Ocean Beach.

The recent wild weather has now gouged out the sandbank in two places, cutting off one accessway to the beach and making parking a car at the eastern end of the strip of reserve a tad risky. Ironically the “Beachcare” project was a joint Waikato Regional Council, Waikato District Council and community initiative to combat erosion.

Brunet through to final four Raglan local Aaron Brunet continued his winning form to make it into the top four of Masterchef New Zealand.

In this week’s show, the ‘Top Five’ contestants had to replicate the ‘Not So Lemon Meringue Pie’, a contemporary twist on the lemon meringue pie created by guest judge Andrew Brown, executive chef of The George Hotel in Christchurch.

Andrew’s five-star dish involved at least six different cooking processes, including lemon crème brûlée, Italian meringue, macadamia crumble and raspberry coulis. The ‘Top Five’ had just 90 minutes to attempt it as well as make Aaron Brunet a champagne cocktail to compliment the dish.

With only limited pantry time to grab all the required ingredients Aaron realised that he had missed an ingredient - freeze dried rasberries. On realizing his mistake at such a vital time in the competition Aaron encountered “the sweat down the back of the spine feeling” - but was quick to recover - “I ‘ll have to put my thinking cap on.”

Fellow contestant Paula chuckled to the camera “It’s nice to see that Aaron’s forgotten something. He’s not as perfect as we all think he is - but I’m sure he’ll work with it”.

Aaron indeed worked with it because his idea to produce candied raspberries instead was described as ‘genius’ by the judges. His dessert along with Kelly Kaihea’s were the winners of the challenge. “Theres no stopping you is there Aaron, your dish was superb...A slightly man sized replica of Andrews dish but utterly faithful to his recipe” said the judges. His campagne cocktail was described as ‘elegant and sophisticated’.

Ella Krauts became the twelfth contestant from the Top 16 to leave MasterChef New Zealand on Sunday.

Aaron and his fellow contestants were visibly upset at having to say goodbye to Ella - though she did not leave empty handed as Judge Josh Emmet immediately offered her a job in one of his kitchens.

New Raglan resident Jess Fitzgerald reckons the signs are she’s come to the right place to put down roots. For within just a few weeks of arriving here from Fremantle in Western Australia, she discovered a collection of tribal jewellery at Right Up My Alley in Volcom Lane.

And with her idea of starting a local tribalstyle belly dance class – which depends on lots of jewellery for effect – Jess feels she could be in a community of like-minded souls who might just want to shimmy and shake their way through winter for a performance in spring.

So last week at the Union Church hall in Stewart Street, Jess was set to don pantaloons with jewelled belt and a choli, or bodice, with jewelled bra top in which to demonstrate her art form for locals keen to give it a go.

Tribal-style belly dance is a fusion of cultures, Jess explains, inspired by Flamenco, Indian, North African and Middle Eastern dance. “The costumes celebrate what is sacred to the feminine,” she insists. “But what I love most about Tribal is the connection to people through movement.”

While the dance form has what Jess calls a syllabus of moves, it is also very “instinctual”, she adds.

And it’s quite a “modest” form of dance costume-wise compared with say Egyptian belly dance, where more of the body is bared and harem pants split up the length of the legs.

Tribal belly dancing in contrast is identified by its full, flamboyant 25-yard tribal or “tissue” skirts, she says – more gypsy than harem.

Jess, at 24, has danced most of her life but for the last two-and-a-half years as part of a performance group in Fremantle known as Tribalive – a free spirit dance community. She

took over the teaching of classes during her last six months there.

But she and her partner were ready to return home to New Zealand and put down roots, and they came to Raglan on a whim “because we heard it was cool”.

Jess says they were looking for something akin to the alternative lifestyle of Fremantle. And Raglan is even better than she imagined. “There seems to be a really strong community bond … I feel like this is the place (to be).”

Now Jess just wants to find others here to dance and connect with. She’s confident her classes will “evolve” and, hopefully, provide performance opportunities within Raglan and further afield. Edith Symes *Classes run at the Union Church hall on Wednesdays at 7pm.

In Brief Friends of Wainui work day Friends of Wainui is having a special work-day from 10.30am on Sunday 19 May to prepare for new tree planting. Please bring a spade and join us!

The Friends look after the 10 hectare reserve, either side of the Wainui Stream, just beyond the Harbour Care nursery on Wainui Rd. This former farm, which is part of the 140 hectare council reserve, has had about 15,000 trees planted since 1993. The new planting will fill in the remaining gaps.

More weekend work days will be run to plant the new trees, add to the labels which identify many of the native trees and to improve the signposting of tracks.

Work teams from Friends of Wainui tackle a variety of jobs every couple of weeks on Monday mornings.

The main work is mowing the lawns and tracks, trimming the vegetation beside the tracks, cleaning the ornamental pond and keeping weeds and animal pests under control. For further information ring 825 7866.

Raglan Golf Club update The Club A.G.M. was held on Saturday.May 4th. President Mike Goodison thanked the staff and Club volunteers who’s efforts have combined to keep the Club in a stable financial state over the past year, and carry out some improvements to the course.

A variety of income sources from subs, green fees, Club-house sales, sponsorships, sheep farming, and firewood sales are necessary to keep the Club afloat, and the hard work of all participants from the green-keeper, Howard Jackson, farmers Ken and John, firewood deliverers Alex and Garry, Club Manager Mitch, and the Management Board members, all played a big part over the past year.

The Management Board was re-elected for a further year, with the welcome addition of David Armory.

Club member numbers are relatively stable, with a new group of 9 hole Lady members taking up the game with enthusiasm, and available as company for others who might like to join in and have fun and exercise at the same time.

Club Manager, Mitch Doran, will be returning to the U.K. at the end of May. The Club-house will be operating with volunteer help over the winter. It will be open at busy times, and Club hire, etc, will be available via a contact number on the Club answer-phone.

The next Club event will be the Wrightson Ambrose, from 10.00 a.m. on Friday 17th May.

Slogan tees ready to turn Raglan Playcentre town pink pursues new premises Raglan Playcentre, currently operating from the Scout Hall on Cliff Street, is hoping to be operating from a purpose built building on the Norrie Ave and Whitley St corner of Raglan Area School’s grounds by the end of the year.

The winning slogans have been picked, the t-shirts printed and everything is all go for Pink Shirt Day this Friday.

Around 250 students from Raglan Area and Te Uku took part in a slogan design competition to send out a strong message against bullying.

Family Works Northern (FWN) with ‘Social Workers In Schools’ (SWIS) have been running a series of activities and competitions leading up to Pink Shirt Day. These include colouring in and logo/slogan competitions, Pink Shirt mufti day, and class lessons that have been developed to integrate

as part of the school curriculum for Positive Behaviour 4 Learning .

On May 17 FWN/SWIS have planned a series of ‘pink’ events in Raglan, including a march by students, teachers and support staff from local schools through the main street of Raglan starting at 12.00 pm.

The march will be followed by a community and health expo in the Raglan Town Hall starting at 1.00 pm with a great prize donated by Vodafone for the best dressed. The community and health expo is aimed at providing students and their families with information on where to go for help should bullying be an issue for them.

Though the scope of the project is large and the necessary fundraising will be no mean feat, the members are committed to establishing a fully licensed Playcentre that families of the Raglan community and beyond can utilise and enjoy.

Alison Hewett, co-president of Raglan Playcentre, was a member of the long established Titirangi Playcentre and is well aware of the benefits that come with licensing. “Titirangi Playcentre is a long established, successful centre with a huge

waiting list and fantastic philosophy. My girls and I were extremely lucky to belong to this amazing community where we had the opportunity to play and learn together.

It would be great to see Raglan Playcentre become as successful.”

“We believe that if we have a purpose built centre more Raglan families will want to take advantage of what Playcentre has to offer - a parent-led environment for children to learn through play in mixed age groups with great adult to child ratios.

Toy Library turning five For many children every two weeks is like Christmas day!

The excitement of renting new toys each fortnight is both a practical and affordable way for children to learn through play. The Whaingaroa Toy Library had humble beings in 2008 and 5 years later now boasts 350 toys and a membership of 40 families. To celebrate being open 5 years there will be an open day party on this Monday the 20th of May at Te Uku Memorial Hall. It is a gold coin koha and will run from 10.30 till 11.30 am. Some of the larger toys will be

available for the children to play with and of course some dancing fun. All families with pre schoolers are welcome. The Toy Library would also like to kindly thank Meridian Energy for granting $1000 which will be spent on toys this year. PRIME emergency care for Raglan residents In the case of a serious medical emergency, Raglan is a long way from the nearest hospital.

That’s why PRIME –a medical emergency service that provides additional support for the ambulance service - was introduced to the town nearly five years ago by West Coast Health Clinic’s Dr Fiona Bolden.

Since then, the service has been operated 24/7 by a committed team of local doctors and nurses, ensuring that in the event of a dire medical emergency, a practitioner with a high level of medical skill will always be available.

Having just experienced a busy summer season, which has seen all of Raglan’s emergency services respond to a wide range of life-threatening situations, including several near-drownings and serious car accidents, the PRIME team believes the service remains essential for the care and protection of Raglan residents.

“I think we have saved lives,” says PRIME team member Dr Rebekah Doran.

“We’ve made a difference.”

What is PRIME? PRIME stands for Primary Response in Medical Emergencies. The service utilises the skills of specially trained local doctors and nurses to provide a rapid response to seriously ill or injured residents in rural areas.

PRIME works alongside the ambulance and other emergency services to offer a higher level of medical expertise than may

otherwise be available.

In Raglan, the service relies on the commitment of local medical personnel from West Coast Health Clinic and Waikato Hospital in order to operate. Only partly funded by ACC and St John, the programme is run through the West Coast Health Charitable Trust and welcomes private donations to help with training and equipment costs.

While the service isn’t voluntary – practitioners receive a small reimbursement for their time – there is a considerable time outlay involved. Practitioners must undergo a week of training when they first join the programme, and undertake further training every two years.

To cover out-of-hours emergencies, the team operate a roster system, ensuring that a trained practitioner is always on-call to respond to a serious medical emergency.

How does PRIME operate?

PRIME operates through the 111 emergency system. This means you can’t access the service directly.

If you make an emergency call, the handler of the call will determine whether the situation is serious enough to require the services of PRIME, and will then page the practitioner on duty.

Following a callout, the on-call practitioner will respond at the same time as the ambulance service.

Why is PRIME necessary in Raglan?

In a medical emergency, Raglan is a long way from a hospital. And with only one ambulance available, there have been occasions when the vehicle is in Hamilton but needed in Raglan.

PRIME practitioners are specially trained and equipped to deal with trauma and serious medical emergencies, and can provide timely, critical treatment that may not otherwise be available from the ambulance service.

It’s important to note that PRIME is not an out-of-hours GP service –it is for serious medical emergencies only.

When is PRIME in operation?

PRIME is in place in Raglan 24/7. During the day the service is run through West Coast Health clinic. After hours, a roster system of PRIME practitioners is in place.

The Raglan PRIME team covers the whole of the Raglan area, including Waingaro, the area up to the deviation and halfway to Kawhia.
