Describe your practice?

When I’m not painting I am a freelance Graphic Designer and a full time mum.

What are you working on at the moment?

The list is endless.... it just gets better and better each day.

If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself?

I guess it would be a small tropical island to go to with friends and family.

Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?

My design teacher, Martin. He was totally inspiring and used to take a few of us out to jazz gigs on school nights.

Ultimate four dinner party guests, dead or alive?

They would all have to be funny people, so we spend the whole time laughing. So it would have to be Steven Fry, Dawn French, Vince Vaughn and Whoopi Goldberg.

Your best traveling experience?

I would say as an experience, Papua New Guinea - it was the trip which taught me a lot about other cultures, myself and my partner, Ed. Teen’s taste of international rugby echoes 79-year-old’s

A

fighting-fit septuagenarian living a few streets away was almost as excited as Josef Meek’s parents when the Raglan teen’s Hamilton Boys’ High School side edged out a South African team to win a prestigious international rugby schools tournament in Japan recently.

But that’s not altogether surprising considering Robbie Morris had not only helped Josef with his expenses in getting to Fukuoka but had taken a similar trip way back in 1958 as part of a star-studded New Zealand under-23 side which toured Japan.

“He couldn’t wait to hear the results,” says Joe’s father Chris of the 79-year-old Raglan identity.

Joe – back in town last weekend and proudly showing off his winners’ medal – says what made the tournament really exciting was beating the South African side in the final in the last two minutes of the game. “Everybody was jumping up and down!”

The win by his 1st XV team – which was there at the invitation of the New Zealand Rugby Union to play top secondary school sides from eight other countries – was all the more meritorious considering that as a result of two sin-binnings they had only 14 players on the field for the entire game.

Council has appointed two independent commissioners, Phil Mitchell and Alan Watson, to hear from a welter of submitters in the week beginning August 4 and to come up with a recommendation on the Raglan Land Company’s plans for a “living zone” in which up to 500 houses would be built on the peninsula over a 40-year timeframe.

formidable reputation at both national and international level, and have won three of the four overseas secondary school tournaments in which they’ve played in recent years.

Not that Robbie’s 1958 team pales at all by comparison. His framed copy of the official team photo reveals it was captained by the legendary Wilson Whinerary and included other rugby greats like Colin “Pinetree” Meads and Kel Tremaine.

“It was quite terrific,” says Robbie – who coincidentally also went to Boys’ High – of the experience of turning out alongside seven or eight players who were or later became All Blacks.

“I was one of the also-rans – but never mind, I got a few runs,” he says modestly.

Meanwhile Joe rates getting a taste of Japanese culture as another highlight of his 18-day trip.

The 16-year-old told the Chronicle that life in Kyoto – where they were billeted and went sight-seeing before the

tournament – was so different , recalling some “pretty crazy” sprints between overcrowded trains and a lot of cramming to get on them.

Then there was the meditation temple they visited where they all had to sit in silence for about half an hour with crossed legs and straight backs. A monk smacked anyone who made a sound on the back with a massive stick, says Joe, and they had to stifle any urge to giggle so as not to seem “disrespectful”.

Joe reckons he escaped retribution but that his mate next to him wasn’t so fortunate.

Fellow locals Wayne and Gillian Elliott also contributed towards Joe’s expenses after reading in the Chronicle a while back about his upcoming sports trips – first to Japan, where his Boys’ High team played six games over eight days, and then come September to the Gold Coast as part of the national under 17 touch team.

August hearing here over peninsula plans A four-day hearing will be held in town in early August over what a senior Waikato District Council manager last week described as an “an issue of incredible interest to Raglan” – the application for a private plan change which would clear the way for extensive residential development of the Rangitaha Peninsula.

Raglan Community Board last week that of the 121 submissions received 41 were in support, 17 were neutral and 63 in opposition.

A 10-day period for further submissions had now begun, he added. This follows the publication of a summary of the submissions received – a step requested by submitters – and any further submissions must be with the council by Friday week (May 23).

Mr Whittaker – who’d earlier described the issue as of incredible interest – said council staff would provide an analysis under section 32 of the Resource Management Act but the independent panel would write the report that went to council for its endorsement.

He described the panel as “like an independent board of inquiry” and said the council would need to have good reason to not support the two commissioners’

recommendations.

Dr Mitchell, the panel chair, has nearly 30 years’ experience in the resource management field and is founding director of Mitchell Partnerships Ltd. Mr Watson also has his own consultancy, A R Watson Associates, and has previously worked alongside Dr Mitchell as an independent commissioner.

The hearing is to be held at the Raglan Bowling Club.

As the proposal is a private plan change all of the council’s costs will be met by Raglan Land Company, which is headed up by Te Mata-based farmer and developer – and Ballance Agri-Nutrients chairman – David Peacocke.

The company already has approval to build a bridge across the causeway that separates Opotoru Road from the peninsula.

aglan’s Taylor Hutchison claimed his maiden victory in the Under 17 Boys Division at the Backdoor GromBash completed at Raglan on Sunday 11th. The final was one of the closest of the day with the lead swinging back and forth between Hutchison and triple finalist Kehu Butler (Mnt).

Jonas Tawharu (Mnt) was also close behind surfing his own excellent 8.0 point ride early in the final which kept him in the hunt. However, after being pushed back into second and with a minute to go, Hutchison

carved his way to a 6.60 point ride to eclipse Butler, 15.57 versus 15.47 points. Tawharu finished in third place, his best result on the New Zealand Grom Series to date. Andrew Fraser – Mackenzie (Mnt) placed fourth surfing in his first ever national final.

Last minute wins also came in both Under 20 Divisions at the Backdoor GromBashd at Manu Bay with Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha) and Bianca Sansom (Albany, Auck) claiming titles.

In clean 1.0m waves with no wind all day long, the final day of the Backdoor GromBash produced some exceptional surfing particularly in the Under 20 Divisions.

Paerata – Reid was left shocked at the start of their 25 minute final when opponents Kehu Butler (Mnt) and T a y l o r Taylor Hutchison Hutchison scored eight and nine point rides to jump out into the lead. But it was Paerata – Reid that held his nerve to surf his own 8.5 point ride in the dying stages of the final which catapulted him into the lead and subsequent win.

“The boys dropped 8s and 9s right at the start but I knew if I got the right wave I could get the same scores” and Paerata – Reid did finishing with a 15.87 point heat total.

Raglan foodies could soon be enjoying the Kiwi ‘paddock to plate’ experience if local builder Rob Bailey pulls off a plan to put his own breakfast sausages and bacon on the menu at Rock-it on Wainui Road, just before the turn-off to Ocean Beach.

And that explains the recent appearance of some big pigs out the other side of town, on a hillside visible to SH23 traffic heading east between Okete and Te Uku. Ten sows – from pink to patchycoloured – are being housed there in sow

pens trucked up the past few months from a farm in Raetahi.

And yes there’s “some big pigs” for sure, says Rob, some of them orphan pigs which’ve grown too big for different places around town and are now being fattened up for inclusion on the menu at Rock-it.

The 100-year-old shearing shed turned café-cum-surf shop – which has a Tractor FM studio run by Rob in its loft – is set to open its new full-scale kitchen any time soon, serving first breakfasts then dinners when the time’s right care of Rob’s partner Sarah Kay, a chef.

Meantime the plan’s not only to serve their own sausages and bacon from paddock

to plate – a catchphrase for a trend in New Zealand cuisine towards meals of fresh, locally and sustainably produced fare – but to add salami, pastrami, prosciutto, Parma ham and more to the mix.

While Rob reckons he always intended to use his patch of land to the east of Raglan “a bit better” – he’s grazed cattle there for 10 to 15 years – he didn’t really plan on this latest development of breeding and fattening pigs.

But the opportunity to diversify came when a friend and local pig-hunter wanted more land for his ever-increasing herd of pigs, so the pair are in it together.

ou can’t keep a good thing down, they say, and Raglan place making enthusiasts have bounced back quickly from the town square controversy.

Only last week Lisa Thomson was telling the Raglan Community Board that the steering committee was still committed to engaging residents over possible smallscale initiatives, and planned some Saturday morning pop-up seating in Bow Street “to talk to the community about what place making really is”.

And on Saturday it happened on cue, with couches, a seat and table set up among the Phoenix palms that line Bow Street’s

grassed centre islands luring in plenty of passers-by for a chat in the sunshine.

When the Chronicle called by in the early afternoon the quirky consultation exercise was still in full swing, and a good number of locals had plastered notes – with their place making suggestions – over the trunk of one of the iconic palms.

Coincidentally a plan to trial two new areas of seating on the centre islands looks set to go ahead after it was endorsed by the same packed public meeting which panned proposals for a town square. Another place making project on the go is seeking community input on how the interior of the refurbished Raglan library should look (see separate story page 8).

Wastewater scheme progressing well Construction of the new Whaanga Coast wastewater project is progressing well with 12 properties already connected to the new system and fully operational.

Waikato District Council’s contractor, Spartan Construction, have installed 90 percent of the main sewer line along Wainui Road and Upper Wainui Road with the full scheme scheduled for completion in June.

General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty says Council is pleased with the progress made throughout the project including the feedback they’ve received for the new scheme from both residents and local iwi.

“We’ve made a determined effort to

provide regular updates to property owners and key stakeholders including local iwi throughout the project and this has played a significant role in helping us stay close to our original timeline and delivering the final project within budget.”

Mr Harty says as the project nears completion, property owners who are considering signing up to the new scheme are urged to do so as soon as possible.

“Existing property owners who join the scheme before construction ends will pay a subsidised amount with Council covering 52% of the connection cost. Once the project is complete the offer isn’t available and they’ll need to contribute the full sum.” WDC

Raglan Old School Arts Centre raffle winners Over the last 3 months the Raglan Community Arts Centre sold $10 raffle tickets to raise funds for the after school kids’ clay classes An amazing 300 tickets were sold - a great tribute to the generosity of the Raglan community.

In Brief: Moves seen as threat to Xtreme Waste An extension of Xtreme Waste’s contract rang alarm bells at last week’s Raglan Community Board meeting – because of Waikato District Council’s reasons for doing so.

Council waters manager Martin Mould explained the contract, which was to expire in June, was being extended 18 months to coincide with the expiration of another contract in the council’s northern districts. But when he also linked the move to a solid waste review the council was “working through”, board members questioned the council’s motives and raised, for instance, whether it wanted just the one large “regional” contract. That

forced council staff on to the defensive over how they awarded contracts and to stress the emphasis the tender process placed on non-price components. Mr Mould also raised alarm bells with a comment that “if you put out two bags it’s twice the cost here [of refuse collection elsewhere in the district]”. Local radio station manager and Xtreme Waste doco maker Aaran Mooar, who was sitting in on the meeting, found the comparison was misleading and retorted the average Raglan household was “nowhere near using two bags”. Unhelpfully to local and board sentiment, the meeting also heard the price of a blue bag was about to rise 10 cents to $2.80 in line with consumer price index increases.

No toying around with library’s request for grant Whaingaroa Community Toy Library’s application for funding ran to 14 pages – 16 if you count the accompanying council report.

But it took Raglan Community Board only a few minutes last week to grant the Te Uku-based library the full $1003 it sought to boost the range

of toys available to the 92 children benefiting from the service each week.

Bob MacLeod called it a great service, adding it was “a pity they could not locate it in Raglan”, and the board’s only concern was to get a reassurance from council staff it was still working under a discretionary fund policy that allowed it to grant the full amount requested.

Board opts to put up with odd lonely night Raglan Community Board has voted to put up with the odd empty public gallery and keep the start time of its regular meetings at 6pm.

Chairperson Linda Cole told last week’s meeting it could be “very lonely here in winter” and said the matter was on the agenda so the board could consider reverting to an earlier

start. But the board agreed the 6pm start – aimed at getting along people who for various reasons could not make it during the day – was working quite well most of the time. “We aren’t lonely tonight,” board member Jon Taylor observed. “When it is empty it’s because there are no hot topics on the agenda.” Each meeting is preceded at 5.30 by a public forum where anyone can have a say.

corn ITM Building Centre first opened its doors for trading in October 1991 on premises situated at Riverlea Road in Hamilton and a year later in 1992 started their first deliveries to Raglan.

“Back in 1992, our first rep. Mr. AL Johnston worked very hard to ensure we had relationships with all the main Raglan builders,” said Acorn admin manager Carolyn Harkins.

Local builder Mark Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald & Gillard Building Contractors has been a client with Acorn for close to twenty years.

“They provide a great service. I think Raglan’s a bit of a soft spot, Acorn have always looked after Raglan builders and the sales reps have usually lived in Raglan too – it makes it a lot easier when the guy you’re dealing with is local,” he said, adding that “Acorn also have good competitive prices that will keep us coming back.”

Acorn have also got behind Raglan to support many of our community organisations like the Raglan Club, golf

course and coastguard, assisting with fundraising and sponsorship efforts.

Although now part of the ITM group, Acorn is still a family owned business that nurtures client relationships.

“The relationship with our clients is really important to us. We like to make sure that we work closely with builders and other trades people and businesses to ensure they are being provided with the best products for the job. Our association with ITM means we can get good prices while still providing a personal service,” says Carolyn.

Ideas required for new library space With the refurbishment progressing well on the Raglan Library, Waikato District Council is inviting ideas from the community on how they would like the new space to look.

General Manager Customer Support Sue Duignan said it was a special opportunity for library users to have input into the interior look of the building, which is for them to use and enjoy.

“We are welcoming ideas on artwork and decoration, seating, layout and special points of interest.”

Ms Duignan said the project was part of the Raglan Placemaking initiative, and a committee would begin planning this week.

“The input from the community will help steer the project, which is aimed at

marrying the Waikato District Council brand with something that is uniquely Raglan.”
