I thought we were going to find out what had been decided and what we could do to help. The project has been driven by a group of ratepayers who were interested enough to go to Marlin Cafe & Grill. When we arrived we found a crowd of people filing into the building and the atmosphere was, to say the The Shack. We are supposed to be friendly, helpful and community spirited. Yeah right!

After a full explanation of the progress so far, the questions that followed were amazing. at the meeting, were to say the least, malicious and untrue: The road isn’t being closed.

There will not be a reduction in the road space.

There won’t be a sandpit outside the Supermarket or a swing set and trampoline in the centre island.

The Community Board is involved in this and I understand have pledged money for it and had somebody at every meeting so why do so many people think it hasn’t been consulted?

It has, and they have left it to the project group to organise. I also understand the intersection issue had been resolved at a previous meeting some time ago, attended by the very people who raised the question on Thursday night. What was all that about...they knew it wasn’t closing.

If you hadn’t heard about this project before, you now have, so how about be helpful for a change and offer some volunteer time to help. So far it has cost very little with materials donated and a lot of work by the under appreciated project group. We may end up with some very nice seating areas in the centre of town and a pleasant town centre to socialise in.

Big turnout rejects town square project outright ,

aglan won’t be getting a town square – or anything remotely like it – after the concept met with stiff opposition at a packed, three hour-long public meeting last week.

A plan developed at a town hall workshop attended by about 20 people in February met its end, ironically, in the supper room next door when a 120-strong turnout of locals made it overwhelmingly clear they wanted the heart of downtown Raglan, the Bow Street-Wainui Road T-junction, left as is.

“You want the town square off [the table]?” chairman Wally Hayes, who heads up Waikato District Council’s infrastructure committee, asked the meeting after it had become increasingly clear efforts to clear up misconceptions about the size and scope of the project were getting nowhere.

“Yes” came the resounding rejoinder.

“Right – done,” he said to strong applause.

Meeting-goers appeared happy, however, with plans outlined by “place making” group member Lisa Thomson for two new areas of seating on Bow Street’s centre islands, so long as that initiative and any others to come out of Australian community spaces guru David Engwicht’s workshop went through the Raglan Community Board.

It was also suggested a council representative should be designated to work with the “place making” group.

Much of the anger at last week’s meeting centred on the lack of communication with

the community, and local iwi and new community board chairperson Linda Cole were among the strongest critics. She said she emailed council management asking for consultation soon after learning of the town square project “and I do not know why we had to wait 2½ months for it”.

Earlier, she said that never before had an issue divided the [Raglan] community so much, an observation which Waikato District Council general manager strategy and support Tony Whittaker described as incredibly sad. He said the council – which was always criticised for not delivering to the community – had seen what “place making” had achieved in Paihia and Palmerston North and brought David Engwicht out to Raglan in the hope “it might have legs here”.

Wally Hayes described the purpose of the meeting as putting the facts on the table – which included a presentation by traffic engineering consultant Alasdair Gray showing three spaces, outside The Shack, Blacksand and the hotel, could be created for “place making” without disrupting traffic flows – and then seeing if there was “a mandate for going forward or not”.

But try as he did to ensure people got their concerns about the project addressed, supposed questions from the floor frequently turned more into tirades over lack of process and consultation – SuperValue owner Richard Jacobsen reckoned the only consultation was “an ad in the paper” – and why anything needed to change downtown anyway.

should have focused instead on the area at the bottom of Bow Street around Orca and the jetty, and that Raglan needed to “get close to and embrace the sea”. Former community board chairman Peter Storey also had a lash at the project’s cost to ratepayers, saying he understood $21,000 had already been spent.

It seemed for a while the meeting might drag on towards midnight, but then “place making” group member and Chamber of Commerce president Dave Currie stood up and graciously declared defeat for the project.

“There doesn’t appear any point [in carrying on], we have to say enough is enough,” he said. “A group of volunteers tried to do some good for the town but now we have to stop, pause, have a cup of tea … we’ve had a crack and cocked it up.”

He was sorry the project had caused some grief, but it was not intentional and Raglan people had to put more trust in one another.

Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley said he was very concerned that people read into concept drawings that what they saw was actually going to happen. He also pointed out the project was “always about the community doing something for itself”.

By that stage the meeting had already voted to terminate the project and it was only through Lisa Thomson’s plea for two areas of seating to go ahead on the Bow Street median strips that any return on the town’s flirtation with “place making” and David Engwicht looks likely in the immediate future. And any future projects will require thinking outside the square.

n apparently bungled mailout may have denied some Raglan residents a considered say over what Waikato District Council plans for its new year starting July 1 – and how much it’s likely to hit them in the pocket.

wo young mums keen to get a home-educating network under way in Raglan are planning a picnic-cum-games day – weather permitting – at Kopua domain in a fortnight.

Bronwyn Frost and Sarah Cox – both new to home schooling this year - are looking for inspiration from other families in the area who share their interest in home educating whether it be traditional, Steiner-based or something completely different like ‘unschooling’ in which children learn through natural life experiences.

“There are so many diverse philosophies of education,” Bronwyn told the Chronicle this week. She was excited to have such choices within the Kiwi culture and keen to tap into other people’s ideas.

It was good for home-educating families to establish a network – focusing on the social side of things

– within their own community, she added, although for Raglan there had been some access to groups over the divvy.

Bronwyn and Sarah got about nine local families together down at the domain last term for their first meet and greet, and from that an “enthusiastic” core group emerged.

It was done by word-of-mouth, said Bronwyn, and included some veteran home-schoolers with children now in their teens.

Families came from as far away as Te Akau and Waitetuna.

“It was good to know who’s out there,” added Sarah, who’s looking forward now to exchanging email addresses and planning regular meetings for home educators or those considering the option.

The council says it recently sent all ratepayers a glossy A4 publication, entitled “Waikato Navigator”, outlining what’s proposed for the coming year and what’s changed from its 2012/2022 long term plan.

Attached to the 10page pamphlet is a six-page submission form with a freepost back to council.

Trouble is, a number of the 20-odd locals who turned up to an annual plan meeting at Raglan Bowling Club on Tuesday of last week said they’d never seen the publication until spying copies on a desk on the way in. Other ratepayers the Chronicle later checked with about town had also not received the mailout.

As the publication detailed when and where public meetings

($23,000), a new water booster pump station that will help fire-fighting ($127,000) and a wastewater pump station upgrade ($36,000). A fourth item highlighted at last week’s meeting, a Raglan Coastguard grant, is merely to cover a rent rise at the council-owned Raglan wharf building.

Council watchdog John Lawson has also identified another $47,000 earmarked for Wainui Reserve, $11,000 for toilets and $12,000 for local parks. Against that $35,000 for playgrounds has been cut out of the budgets.

John asked at last week’s meeting what a $1.4 million amount for a Lorenzen Bay structure plan was about, but noone from council seemed sure.

Also doing the rounds, ironically, is a pamphlet in which Waikato District Council is asking people how it can do better with “community engagement”.

Raglan Stone Sculptors’ Exhibition starts this weekend The Raglan & District Museum will be opening an exhibition of stone sculpture by three Raglan sculptors at 6.30pm on 10 May 2014 at the museum in Wainui Road, Raglan.

The three are Tai Meuli, Richard Page and Gene Pospisil.

All are well known and highly regarded for their work.

Tai Meuli has won various commissions including those to design and make the trophies for the Vero Excellence in Business Support Awards and the Hamilton V8 Supercars series.

Richard Page finished a traditional apprenticeship in the mid 1990s and since then has

would be held over the plan, the apparent delivery botch-up may help explain why so few Raglan people bowled along to the meeting.

Worse, it seems likely a good number of Raglan residents still know nothing of the plan – or that 4pm today (Thursday) is the deadline for getting in submissions. Waikato district mayor Allan Sanson did promise last Tuesday that the council would accept late submissions, but anyone wanting to have their say will need to act quickly.

The 2014/15 draft annual plan – also referred to as the third year of the long term plan – does foreshadow some rates rises again for Raglan that will be well above the inflation rate.

Although a forecast 2.55 percent hike in the general rate has been pared back to 1.89 percent, the targeted rates for water and wastewater are both set to go up by 10 percent as the council continues to try to get those accounts back in the black.

Raglan infrastructure projects set to be funded in 2014/15 include additional walkways in Wainui Reserve

completed various international commissions including those for the Taiwan and the Hong Kong railway stations, along with The Gate, a public commission for Te Awamutu township.

Most recently Tai and Richard completed the two large commissioned works that adorn the entrance to Raglan’s Kopua Holiday Park.

Gene Pospisil completed an apprenticeship in silversmithing and jewellery design and manufacture in 2007. In his final year and since then his work has concentrated on stone sculpture of an increasing size.

Auctioneer Julie Hanna encouraging bidders to dig deep for KASM

whopping $12,000 was raised at last Saturday night’s music/ auction event in Raglan to help fund KASM’s legal fight against seabed mining off the North Island’s west coast.

It was an “amazing” response from the townspeople, Kiwis Against Seabed Mining committee member Suz Hall told the Chronicle. “We (the committee) were absolutely blown away.

“It was one of those nights when you’re

proud to be a Raglander.”

KASM president Phil McCabe said it was a fantastic turnout, with 300 folk “generous to the cause”.

The auction – conducted by Julie Hanna from Ray White – raised $5600 of the total. “Loads of people” came early to bid when the doors opened at 6.30, said Suz. That was uncharacteristic of local music-goers and “we really felt people were coming along to support their community”.

The event, held at Raglan Club, hosted

an impressive line-up of bands headed up by the legendary Mudsharks with bluesman Midge Marsden. All gave their time for free, as did a voluntary army of helpers behind the scenes in the kitchen from where food was served as part of the fundraising effort.

Funds raised will help pay for lawyers, scientists and other experts engaged by KASM to argue its case at Environmental Protection Authority hearings currently being held around the North Island.

Whaingaroa Hoe

Awatea Dillon, who steered the local junior boys team Te Marino, was a ‘bit sore’ last Sunday after a challenging 8km waka ama race on the Raglan harbour.

His team (including Sean, Toki, Richard, Kemo and Patana) are all related and have been training for 2 months with coaching from his dad Matt Dillon.

The Whaingaaroa Hoe was his first race and he said felt quite nervous, and worried about crashing, before the start of the race.

With 50 waka negotiating the start line outside the Opotoru Estuary his team had a difficult time and were caught up in shallow water with a number of other crews. But they ‘didn’t give up’ and encouraged each other to paddle hard, moving up through the race pack to finish 20th.

Working together and supporting each other to paddle hard was the highlight of the race said Awatea.

He is excited to keep up a bit of paddling over the winter and was thankful for the help of his Dad, and the Whaingaroa Waka Whanau for supporting him and his crew.

End of season for Raglan lifeguards ith Easter marking W the end of the Surf

Provisional statistics for the 2013/14 season show Raglan lifeguards have undertaken 53 rescues this summer, which is less than last season’s total of 91.

This decrease in rescues is gratifying as it shows that the Club’s 5,155 preventative action services involving 17,986

Life Saving patrol season at Raglan, lifeguards at Raglan are urging people to take care when swimming at Ngarunui Beach as it will be not be patrolled following the Easter break.

As part of their service to the community Raglan lifeguards have logged up 5,912 hours of patrolling, performed 91 first aid treatments and conducted 24 searches.

Andrew Withers, the Club chairperson says that the lifeguard patrols at Raglan have been of a high standard over summer and he is pleased to record that Raglan lifeguards have continued to deliver these high caliber, community safety services to beachgoers at Raglan’s beaches.

Ruben to share his road safety tips Ruben the Road Safety Bear will be in Raglan this month to teach children from the area how to be safe around our roads.

The popular bear is the mascot for the Waikato Regional Council’s young road user safety programme and teaches children up to about seven years old the foundation road safety skills.

Ruben will be making an appearance in the Raglan Town Hall Supper Room on Friday

16 May between 10.15am and 10.45am. The free event has been arranged in conjunction with Waikato District Council’s Raglan library.

“Ruben hopes to have lots of children join him for this fun and interactive lesson, which is free to attend,” said the regional council’s transport projects administrator, Jenny Davis.

“The children will also be invited to join Ruben’s Kid’s Club so they can receive exciting newsletters reminding them of his key road safety messages into the

future.”

Ms Davis also encouraged parents to actively support road safety messages by role modelling safe road behaviour. “What children see they do, so being a good role model is an important part of teaching children good road safety practices,” she said.

The regional council’s young road user safety programme saw Ruben deliver nearly 300 road safety lessons to 16,511 children throughout the Waikato last year.

Saturday’s perfect weather saw a great turnout of kids for the Raglan Club's 'Take a Kid Fishing' event.

After registration all the entrants headed off to their favourite “catch a fish spot” - be it the wharf, downtown jetty, the harbour entrance, beach or onboard a boat.

After 2.00pm they started coming back - proud to show off their catch. Sprats, gurnard, and kahawai were the main species - with many undersize fish released.

The BBQ had cooked sausages

ready and thanks to our local Super Value supermarket for their sponsorship of drinks, packets of chips and chocolate bars. These were distributed to and greatly appreciated by the kids.

Next was the prize giving. Prizes were for appropriate age groups, and all budding young fishos got a prize.

Those kid’s faces said it all. We will be back at the same time next year with this event.

Thank you to those who supported on the day or assisted greatly in the running of this event.

Wearable artists mayhem making

ll around the district, artists of all ages and experience are busy creating their entries for Raglan Art to Wear Awards 2014, which will be held in the Town Hall on Saturday May 31st.

One such designer is Mariella (pictured) who spent every day over

the school holidays sewing and plaiting recycled fabrics into her entry for the 'White Light' section, sponsored by Ozone.

Meanwhile the word went out to the community recently that Kaz Willowby wanted people to collect bread tags for the entry that she and 4 year old daughter Keisha are working on. They started collecting the bread tags 2 years ago

for their recycled Xtreme Zero Waste sponsored 'Rummage' section garment.

With the show coming up in 3 weeks the race is on to get enough tags and complete the garment on time for Keisha to model.

This year the People's Choice Award, will have the added bonus of a $500 cash prize donated by LJ Hooker, as well as the impressive Chris Meek trophy.

Rap music for the broken-hearted and poetry for illiterates At face value, being a dyslexic writer sounds like an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms. Growing up with dyslexia, Grey Lynn writer, musician and spoken word artist Dominic Hoey a.k.a. Tourettes is exactly that.

Somewhat of a punk poet, if Sam Hunt is the people’s poet laureate, Tourettes is the poet laureate of keeping it real.

“A lot of people say they don’t like poetry but it’s just expression, it’s the same with hip hop, it’s expression and it’s one of the ultimate forms of expression because tit’s so free,” said Tourettes, who has performed with poetry maestro Sam Hunt before.

For the last wee while Tourettes has been a man abroad - travelling the globe, drawing inspiration for his first novel (after securing a writing residency in Skagaströnd a small fishing village in Iceland.)

It was in 2012, in Iceland that Tourettes met Australian folk musician Ben Salter.

At the time, Tourettes didn't even know who Ben Salter was. One evening however, Tourettes, embroiled in the depths of his first novel, ventured out into the cool evening air and consequently stumbled across Ben performing a solo show in Skagaströnd's only little pub.

The two became fast friends and one afternoon decided to climb up a local mountain (Ben in winklepickers and a suit, Tourettes in regulation straw boating hat and cut off jean shorts). As the weather was turning, huddling together for warmth, the two men made a pact. Should they ever make it out of Iceland alive, they should go on tour together.

Fast forward to 2014 and not only did the two make it down the mountain, their dream has manifested itself into a reality as they announce the "Party Tricks and Boring Secrets Tour".

Describe your practice?

I work in a home based studio with 2 other people: my friend Karla and husband Craig. Together we formed a partnership called The Monster Company so we could work in a shared space bringing together ideas that can ultimately pay our bills, feed our families and let us be as creative as we can be.

We supply about 30 galleries around NZ. What new creations are you working on at the moment?

The Moppets! These are our latest endeavor.

Marionettes made from wood and clay. Craig is working on some recycled retro style tables. There are always lots of projects bubbling away in the background.

Are you from an artistic family?

My father is a very creative thinker. I think I am like him.

When did you decide to pursue a creative career?

I was a very awkward child and art was the only thing I was good at. I won a sports day programme cover competition at school when I was 7 so it was settled. I would be an artist when I was a grown up.

Tourettes performs Thursday 15th May Solomon (artist/tattooist – Two Hands Tattoo) this is the first time Tourettes has published anything and subsequently the first time the public have had the opportunity to purchase a book of his prose. The book will be available on sale at the gig, as well as at selected outlets.

The best piece of advice you ever got?

Spend more than you can afford on shoes and sheets as you are either standing up or laying down.

Best and worst thing about being an artist?

Best thing is it doesn't feel like a real job most of the time. I feel like I am doing what I am meant to be doing.

Worst thing is having to reproduce work over and over and never having enough time to turn ideas into realities.

If money were no object what frivolous non essential would you buy for yourself?

Mr Porter was my art teacher. I attended a small girls school in England and I was his only student who wanted to study sculpture. We built a huge brick kiln together. He truly inspired me and encouraged me to apply to St Martins School of Art in London.

I would never have done that if he hadn't believed in me.

My name is Cameron Frew and I was born and raised in Raglan where I still live. I am in my final year of school at Nga Taiatea Wharekura, a total immersion Maori language school and have a passion for the sport of rifle shooting which is a recognized sport for people with disabilities.

I have been shooting with the Parafed Waikato Shooting Club for three years and am fortunate to have most of my own equipment now.

Due to a progressive disability I was born with I have had lots of operations during my 16yrs of life so far. In the middle of 2013 I had an operation to restructure one of my feet to give me more balance and mobility however that operation didn't go according to plan ... I got a severe infection in my foot which put me back in Starship Hospital for a month, several more operations and months of medical treatment which continues today. I had to quit

school and shooting as I was too sick to attend.

But ... I am back. I am attending shooting training at the Hamilton Pistol Club every week and gearing up to increase my training for competitions this year. In February I did a 60 shot shoot in Auckland and beat my previous personal best record. The shooting calendar this year includes Waikato Champs at home, NZ Cup 1 in Auckland, NZ Cup 2 in Christchurch, an Australian Cup in Brisbane and a big World Cup event in Thailand in August. To continue my training and get to these comps I need to raise a lot of money.

He started shooting with one of our club air rifles and his rate of improvement in this demanding Olympic discipline was such that he bought his own high spec match rifle in 2013 with the help of the Lions

In the three years that Cameron has been shooting he consistently has shown the type of dedication and ability needed to succeed not only on the domestic competition circuit but internationally as well.

This is what Chloe Wickman (Ececutive Officer) for Parafed Waikato/Bay of Plenty said in support of Cameron Frew.

“Cameron is a young talented athlete who has been part of our club for over three years and showing strong progress in the sport of his choice, para-shooting.

Cameron is a current Youth Ambassador for our organisation, taking on leadership roles with supporting other athletes to achieve success through sport. He has shown growth through this programme and we are looking forward to seeing his progress as a youth leader over the next few months.

His dedication to the sport of shooting has seen him gain a National Classification for the sport, allowing him to compete with athletes of similar abilities. New Zealand is limited in the number of competitive shooters in the same classification and it would be a great opportunity for Cameron to travel and gain more competitive experience.

From an early age Bradleigh Cross developed a great interest in computers and computing technology, especially during his primary and intermediate school years.

Just before starting high school he was belatedly diagnosed with Dyslexia and Suspected mild Aspergers. One of his recommendations by a specialist was to obtain a modern laptop suitable for his studies, tests and examinations. With the future benefits of helping with his education and career choices.

Coming from a single parent family and his mother with a chronic illness, this was a major hurdle for him. Thankfully with a grant from the Raglan Lions Club in addition to 3 years of odd jobs, birthday and Christmas savings, he was able to purchase a laptop computer.

Since then, he completed his high school years and at 16, applied for and started studies at Hamilton's Wintec College for Information Communication Technology.

To date Bradleigh has spent the past 3 years, leaving home early each morning to travel and arrive at Wintec at 8am, for fulltime classes. This has been a remarkable commitment, determination and achievement for a lad with Dyslexia and mild Aspergers.

Out of a starting role of 90 adult learners approximately only 20 students passed to this level.

Bradleigh at his graduation On Tuesday 25th March 2014 a very proud Bradleigh graduated with a Diploma in Information, Communications and Technology.

He would like to express his grateful thanks to the Raglan Lions for helping him along this pathway of his chosen Career, and is now actively seeking employment in this field.

Dreams do come true – and many times it is because Lions have helped to make them happen.

The Raglan Lions are pleased that we supported Bradleigh’s grandparents request at the time.

As the board did not encourage financial assistance to individual requests, but were more favourable towards 'youth at risk' within the community. However long term Raglan Radio DJ “The Captain” assisted the board in making the grant. The Raglan Lions Club wish Bradleigh the very best in his future.
