This year’s generous response to this worthy cause totalled just under $2,700.00 which is an amazing result.

I say a special thanks to the Raglan Club for the use of their club rooms, for their contribution to our refreshments and for their ongoing support of the Raglan RSA. We all say (I’m sure) a very big thank you to the volunteers who helped prepare the food on the day, with a huge thanks to Bella, Francis, Beau and Poppy, who made a big box of Anzac Biscuits for everyone to savour.

Special reason for Raglan to mourn NZ rock legend Old Raglan mates and musical associates of a New Zealand rock legend who frequently visited and played here over the years – and even had a home in town – were still coming to terms this week with his loss.

Dave McArtney, who died at his Point Chevalier home in Auckland, may be best remembered as a founder of iconic bands Hello Sailor and the Pink Flamingos, but Raglan was his bolt-hole and he often performed with the Raglan Mudsharks.

Big water likely to harbour ducks this weekend The drought may have broken but North Island game bird hunters are being encouraged to think laterally ahead of the opening of the season this weekend.

Despite a deluge of rain in the past fortnight, water levels are still low in many regions, meaning ducks have been flocking to larger rivers, lakes, harbours and estuaries.

“The main positive from the drought is that the ducks will be concentrated in larger bodies of water and hunters targeting those areas are likely to come into contact with larger portions of the local population,” Eastern Region Senior Fish & Game Officer Matthew McDougall explained.

Two North Island regions – Eastern and Auckland/Waikato – have responded by limiting their season to four weeks, although Northland, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Wellington hunters will be able to keep hunting mallard and grey duck until the end of June. Upland game birds – pheasant and quail, and other game bird species such as paradise shelduck and black swan - have a longer season extending into July and August depending on the species and region.

The big unknown is what condition the ducks will be in, with food and habitat under pressure during the big dry.

“The last big drought, in 2007-2008, started much earlier in the summer and meant by the time we ran our summer banding programme in January and February, the birds were in really poor condition,” McDougall said. “We had a good breeding season this time around but we’re a bit apprehensive that all the benefits of that breeding season may have been undone because of the conditions over the last few months.”

Brunet ducks through Aaron Brunet made it through to the next round of New Zealand’s MasterChef after narrowly avoiding elimination in this week’s show.

The top seven contestants of Masterchef New Zealand were given two and a half hours to create a ‘Turduckenqua’, using an obscure, ancient cooking technique called ‘engastration’.

Turduckenqua looks like a simple roast but is in fact quail stuffed inside chicken, inside duck, inside turkey.

The contestants also had to cook vegetables of their choice and a sauce to accompany the dish.

Local Brunet was not in Aaron Brunet his usual form. “I’m even seeing Aaron behind the eightball today” said one of the judges. It all stared with Aaron getting his roast in the oven later than he should have. “It’s like a little chain of things that can tip you off your balance and that’s probably what went wrong.” said Aaron. When presenting his ‘Tuduckenqua with Kumera parsnip and fennal Simon commented that “ I don’t often see you flustered’.

After tasting his dish there was no relief for Aaron. “A little bit rough today mate...You’ve been consistently at the top but today there’s not a lot in this dish to hold you together”.

Consequently Aaron found himself in the bottom three for the first time.

The judges quickly countered with: “fortunately you delivered great technique with the Turduckenqua and that’s enough to secure your future with us for another week”.

“Thats not where I want to be again...I want to be right there at the end.” acknowleged Aaron at the end of the show.

Eliott Brookes became the tenth contestant from the Top 16 to leave MasterChef New Zealand on Sunday night.

Raglan dad cycles toddler to deep south and back If you’re thinking you haven’t seen Robin Jones cycling his infant son around Raglan so much recently, you’d be right.

The 27-year-old’s been riding two-year-old Matai around the country instead.

With Matai in his childseat just behind the handlebars, his magna doodle set up on a tray in front of him, the pair have been away over summer on an epic journey of 3-4000 kilometres – one that has taken them all the way from Gisborne to Bluff and back home to Raglan.

They took a ferry across Cook Strait, of course, and on the return leg caught a train from Palmerston North to Hamilton before riding over the divvy to Raglan. But that apart, says Robin, “every little bit of it was on the bike”.

The pair travelled light with only clothes, food, sleeping bag and hammock stuffed into saddlebags on the bike.

They averaged around 50 to 80 kilometres each day and, because it was “awesome” weather almost all the way, managed to huddle together “under the stars” in their hammock for all but about 10 nights when it was a bit damp and they succumbed to paid accommodation.

Summertime is for living and learning, reckons Robin – who’s originally from Britain – and he obviously wants his New Zealandborn son to grow up as resourceful as he is.

“It’s all about being free,” Robin explains of the motivation behind their trip. And he was only too happy to be a guinea pig for likeminded souls: “I thought I’d try it out and tell people what works and what doesn’t.”

Father and son left Raglan late last year, after Robin had bided time over winter in a short-term rental.

Their cycling expedition started from Gisborne, where Matai’s mother lives, but the deep south was always the goal. There’s no better outdoors than the South Island, insists Robin who’s been a Kiwi now for seven or eight years.

Before crossing to the mainland they whiled away a few weeks in the Otaki Gorge on the Kapiti Coast learning some “bushcraft wisdom”, mostly around wild food and medicine, to help them on their way. Robin did some solar hot water work – Raglan people may remember his distinctive old van, which had a solar panel installed on the roof – in exchange for the course he did at Otaki.

Once they reached Wellington it was onto the ferry to Picton from where they cycled to Westport, Buller and then down to Greymouth.

Then back up to Kaikoura, down to Geraldine and across Mackenzie Country to Wanaka.

From there they cycled on to Queenstown and Bluff, then headed back round the coast to Dunedin and up the east coast to Nelson.

Otaki got another look-in on the way home, before the pair boarded the train from Palmerston North to Hamilton.

The best thing about the trip?

“Just living, just being able to live like our ancestors used to,” says Robin. And there was no “worst thing”: he was happy to be meeting people on the road and helping them out in some way in exchange for food or shelter.

End of the season for Raglan Lifeguards With Easter marking the official end to the Surf Life Saving patrol season, Lifeguards at Raglan’s Ngarunui Beach have crossed the flags on another successful summer.

Raglan Lifeguards have undertaken 92 rescues this summer, the second highest of all Northern Region beaches. This season has been one of the busiest recorded in several years.

The prolonged period of hot weather has naturally attracted more people to the beach, which in turn has increased the risk of people getting into trouble in the water.

Raglan Patrol Captain Travis Slattery has stated that ‘Raglan’s rescue statistics are actually lower than last year’s. This is due to the Lifeguards’ increased vigilance in carrying out preventative actions and making the public more aware of how to be safe in the water. And this is what the work of a Surf Lifeguard is measured on, not

the number of rescues undertaken.’

Lifeguards across the Northern Region have spent nearly 80,000 hours patrolling beaches stretching from Raglan to as far north as Ahipara.

They have conducted over 730 first aid treatments, taken part in over 130 searches and undertaken 36,650 preventative actions.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region CEO Pam Elgar says many of the rescues this season have taken place outside of patrol hours and outside of the flagged area. “We’re also seeing consistencies in drowning incidents where people are wearing inappropriate clothing and are unaware of hazardous surf conditions and rips.

As patrols have officially ended, we ask that people take responsibility for their own safety when around water,” she says.

How would you describe the music you play?

All those guys are/were true musical legends and hanging out with them (briefly) was such an inspiration, especially Willie - he is one of the finest guitarists & singers ever!

An unexpected meeting, midnight mixing sessions and now a debut album release, Frank Bellerby and Dean Glass have spent the past ten months cooking up a storm of the musical variety, the resulting product; Fresh tracks from the Kitchen of Cool.

Under the name Happy Juice, the duo’s album includes an eclectic collection of tracks taking you on a “sonic journey into the unknown.’ Drawing inspiration from the likes of the Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin’s earlier sound, the album was recorded in the Kitchen of Cool; not quite a studio, but still a place of greatness.

With special features from numerous other members of the community, Frank says the album was made with “a lot of soul, a lot of passion and bucket loads of coffee.”

It all started for Frank a couple of years ago. Having always wanted to play the drums, he and a friend Mark Reynolds decided to start a band, The Shed.

“Only one of us had ever played an instrument before, we were quite bad actually.

The resulting sound would’ve probably made your ears bleed.

But we got better.” Says Frank.

Dean on the other hand had been playing instruments in bands since he was about 15 years old. A music producer by profession, the meeting between the two became a catalyst for the album to materialise into a reality.

Motivated by a stroke of inspiration Frank says, “Once the first song came out, they all came pouring out. I’d written a song, Love is an Auction, decided to record it, then Dean said: Let’s do an album.”

In true Raglan style, they “just did it” with everybody involved bringing something different to the table whether it was singing, helping with artwork or holding the fort at home.

“This album is a real testament to Raglan’s community spirit. If you have an idea and people that are willing to give their time you’d be surprised what meal you can come up with when everyone chips in,” says Dean.

Extremely happy with the final product, the pair will be taking a breather to focus on their other project, Raglan Records, while contemplating their next step, most likely a heavy rock album.

Raglan Records set to launch Inspired by the phenomenal musical talents of Raglan locals and their own experiences recording and playing music, Frank Bellerby and Mark Reynolds have started a record company, Raglan Records.

“There’s so many talented people in Raglan and we wanted to create an avenue where artists can get their music out to the world” says Frank.

The crew have a website in the works and encourages other musically inclined people to contact them if they would like to be involved.

Schoolboy rugby under way On Saturday, the 20th of April, Raglan Area School hosted Melville College Under 15 Rugby team in what was the first Waikato Secondary School Competition game for Raglan in at least five years.

This was a preseason training game contested in great spirit! Both teams conducted themselves with great mana on the field. The game was won by

Melville but Raglan Area School made an exciting comeback in the final quarter scoring two unanswered tries. A huge thank you to Jason Tatana and Dominic Trail-Addis, the team coaches, and Joseph Rao and Carla Eyre the team managers. The game was followed by a great display of manaakitanga with a Members of the Raglan Area School under 15 side great kai shared by both teams.

The Raglan Club Inc. fishing section announces that the 2014 Gals ‘n’ Gurnard tournament will be run from Monday 6th January to Saturday 11th January.

ANZAC day

Saturday the 11th will be the prize giving evening.

Further developments on the event will be released as they are confirmed.

CatholicKidz up and running Holy Name of Jesus Catholic parish is about to launch its 2013 CatholicKidz programme for primary age children.

Based on 4 mini-terms of 3 sessions each, the programme runs at the church on Sunday mornings.

Administrator Judith Collins says the church wasn’t designed with teaching spaces, so teachers have to convert the porch, the office and the flat – including one of the bedrooms – to accommodate different groups.

This year, says Judith, there will be a class of children preparing to receive their First Holy Communion, and she is hoping that interested families will contact her before the first mini-term begins on 12 May. Minimum age for this class is 7 yrs at the beginning of the year, but she doesn’t usually include children under 8yrs unless they have been attending classes regularly for at least a year. “The First Communion programme is quite challenging,” she says, “and the children definitely need some background knowledge and familiarity with ‘church language’. There is no pressure, no deadline – wait till the child is ready.” This year the class is likely to include children between 8-11yrs.

Meanwhile children 5-7yrs are very welcome in the Junior class, and the Senior class will cater for children up to Year 8.

In closing, I point out that next year is the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War 1 and the 50th Anniversary of 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery, involvement with Raglan town. 2014 will be a BIG year for ANZAC DAY in Raglan and we hope that the Battery (161 Battery) may be able to come to Raglan for a few days and participate in Community activities, conduct an open day with all their Regimental equipment and renew their freedom of Raglan status, including marching through the town, hopefully with our Raglan Pipe Band. It will be a wonderful celebration of Raglan’s history, as well as further securing our link and friendship with 161 Battery.

Area Fishing Report:

by Raglan Wharf Seagull Fishing is still great off the Raglan coast. Sea temperatures are still 19.5 everywhere.

Cut baits on flasher rigs with 60lb traces, and enough sinker weight to get you to the bottom will do it. So if in the shallows sinker will be just a few ounces!

Snapper of size are in close, half a K off the breakers. Snapper are now fat, bulging fat, they have eaten up for the winter, sea biscuits mostly, they must be full of protein. Also in the mix are still plenty of slimy mackerel, these are the prominent fish on your finder screen. These make great bait, as in cut bait or livies. We fished ‘Reef 21’ last weekend and had plenty of apparent kingies on the screen, but could not jig one. Conditions out there were not exactly comfortable, but on baits we had our snapper limit in no time. These snapper had smelly guts of brown fluffy stuff, (like sea sponges) and were not the size of the inshore shallow water caught fish. Large kahawai are still around, but not the workups and birds that we have been accustomed to.

Where to fish: North of the bar out to

30m mark, if you see sign on the screen stop and try it. Spiny dogs have not yet arrived; a temperature drop of a degree will see them back for the winter. Gurnard of size are in the mix also, some still in full roe which is getting late for them. Skippies still could be further out and could be worth a troll, particularly from Jackson’s reef to Gannet Island.

Crayfish pots are still being worked by recreational fishermen.

Flounder, yellow bellies and mullet still abound in our harbours with the recent rains bringing heaps of mullet to the top of the tides into the rushes and fresh water streams. Hundreds of them. I spear fished off the water front a week ago and got my flounder limit in an hour and had to walk over more on my way home. But you need real calm nights.

We fished last week’s Waikato Sports Fishing Clubs FCO Big Four Tournament, hence the jigging on 21, that day wasted.

We really should have just gone for what we do best and that is snapper and kahawai of size, and try for the trevally in the mix then, only then go for the kingis. But we had fun, a great event and we gave the

others a run for their money. Ironically only one contestant got the Big Four. We will be back next year.

Smokem Raglan, we are still getting great feed back on that contest, it will be an annual event, and really winter is the time to do that delicious smoked fish, with white sauce and a bit of parsley.

Up coming events: The Fishing Section of the Raglan Club has Charles Mitchell speaking at 7.00pm on Thursday May the 23rd. Charles is a fresh water biologist, a consultant and on our harbours upper reaches has N.Z’s only sustainable eel, whitebait and mullet farm.

He will be speaking on ‘Ranching of the Sea’. Can we do it? How do we do it?

This will be an interesting, absorbing evening for one and all to attend.

Don’t put the boat away yet, the fish are in top condition and we will have good fishing conditions in the weeks ahead. The Raglan Bar has developed a shallow sand bar out on the seaward side of the entrance, this is not a big danger but you need to be aware when crossing.

Just do it and be safe.
