Dear Editor, I am writing this letter on the Raglan West bridge Burgershack. Takeaway. 35a Bow Street.................................................................... 825 8439 alongside two hundred other concerned coastal people who are waiting to silently usher Mr Andrew Summerville who represents the TTR mining company who seek to mine for iron ore off the west coast of New Zealand. !"#$%&'()'*'+$,%&)%-"./'%0"1'23,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,456%4789 Myself and two other members of our group ‘Surfers For Cetaceans’, Lauren Hill and Chadd Konig were invited to Raglan to attend the annual Maui/Popoto Dolphin Day event. :';<23%='>)%?%@;2<<,%023)%23,%A3%BC)%DC';>,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,%456%EE9E Like most people from all over the world, we have come to Raglan because of the beauty, power and spirit that permeates this place. I was born in New Zealand but moved to Australia F'1'$B)%-2BGC)3,%H'B%23%";%B'()'*'+,%I9%J"*%KB;))B,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,456%EIEE when I was six years old. We moved to Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. This is a wave once revered and visited by surfers from around the world. Around 2001 a sand dredging project began twelve miles down the coast at Snapper Rocks. We were told the project would not affect Nannies Takeaways. 35 Bow Street............................................................................. 825 8842 the rest of the coastline and that the impacts would be contained around Snapper. Within months of the sand being moved two of the most famous !"#$%&'(&)*$&!+,-.&!$,$&.$%),+/$.&0/&)*$&.'%,12)'+(&+3&%"(.&4+!5&&6$')*$,& Burleigh or Kirra have hosted the annual Quiksilver pro since the dredge L'M<'3%D)$B%KB";),%&'()'*'+$,N6%D'23/2%LO,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,456%45PI began. Admittedly, the hydrology and coastlines of the Gold Coast and Raglan differ, but what is similar is the importance of wave quality to the people and &C)%KC'G(,%023)%23%";%&'()'*'+,%9P%J"*%KB;))B,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,456%EE57 their future. It seems there are so many unknown components to the practice of sea bed mining. Is it worth sea bed mining here and risking the extinction of an S';'M"T'%,%L)$B'/;'3B,%='>),%023)%23%?%&'()'*'+,%5I%J"*%KB,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,456%E5E5 entire species? Is it worth risking the entire future of Raglan’s ecology and $9+(+:/&)+&0$($7)&3+,$'8(&9+:2"('$%; I come from a place where we were told the manipulation of sand was not going to negatively affect our greater region, yet it did just that! Any person who lives near water of any kind knows that every action ripples out and affects the space around it 360 degrees. So, as we stand on this bridge in solidarity to send TTR a strong message WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla that sand mining will not happen here, I can’t help but feel optimistic that the people will stop them. It is not too late to get involved and respect all that makes this place special. Abridged Dave Rastovich, pro surfer, NSW, Australia. Fifteen rafts went head to head in what turned out to be another tough competition with a variety of prizes up for grabs. Last year’s winner Sean Oliver was once again the !"#$%$&%'"&##%$()%!*+#(%,+*)%")',-+.+*/%(+#%$+$,)% for another year.

Maryann Tuao and Karin Bettley were the winners for the water conservation competition. Mason Swann won our kid’s water tip competition, with his creative water tip published in this week’s Chronicle.

Ironically, the day after the Maui’s Dolphin Day was held, Waikato Times feature writer Tracey Cooper had an extraordinary encounter with four Maui Dolphins about a kilometre offshore of Whale Bay.

Throughout the day, marine enthusiast Peggy Oki collected hundreds of photos of people posing with DOC’s lifesized Maui’s Dolphin for the “Let’s Face It’ visual petition. Meanwhile, the kiddies enjoyed coloring in their own visual petitions over in the kid’s art tent.

Maui’s Dolphin expert and associate professor Liz Slooten of Otago University, said most Maui’s dolphin sightings occurred between Manukau Harbour and Port Waikato and described the runin as a “really luckyâ€? event.

The day wasn’t just about who was fastest however, with Whatawhata School entry ‘The Shoguns’ scooping the big prize for best raft sponsored by Ray White Real Estate.

Rental concerns as wharf building rises from ashes As steel framing rises steadily from the ashes Waikato District Council is now talking early July for completion of the replacement Raglan Wharf “shed”, but some locals closely following the $1.7 million project fear it may take quite a lot longer to fully tenant the building and have the precinct buzzing again. Council water & facilities general manager Richard Bax told the Raglan Community Board this week that a lease had now been drafted for Raglan Seafoods – which with Tony Sly Pottery was proving a big visitor magnet before the old shed was razed in a spectacular early morning blaze – and that there had been “a number of enquiries” for other wharf space. But some locals with business interests in the area say they understand the council has been chasing “Auckland rents” for premises in the new shed and that it could be a long time before any house full sign goes up. They believe the council in at least one case has been asking for $300 per square metre in rent, but that this has been negotiated down to around the $200 mark. It is also believed Tony Sly Pottery is unlikely to go back into the rebuilt shed, preferring instead to stay on in its premises in the boatbuilding factory alongside. That northwest corner of the wharf’s been enhanced in recent weeks with the opening of a coffee bar by longtime local Stephen Sandwell. Meantime the council is upbeat on the replacement building project itself, saying work is “progressing well” and that – besides the *99,*)*&5,(10(62,(/6,,$(91)6*$(0)*;#&'(<(*(51&5),6,(!$15=(.),4*$$(#/( now also partially complete.

The council’s 3D impression of the new wharf drawn by Beca

Shane Ardern MP

Richard Bax concedes there have been a few minor delays but says that “barring any storms or events we are expecting to complete the building by the beginning of July”. One delay was the result of a late internal design change to one premises, and is expected to add slightly to the project cost. The council last week supplied the Chronicle with a 3D image, drawn by Beca, of the new wharf building and this gives the clearest idea yet of how the area should look by midyear. Richard says the appearance of the building has not changed /#'&#.5*&6$-(0)1;(62,(9)1.$,/(9"6(1"6($*/6(-,*)>(((?&,(;#&1)(52*&',(#/( that an opening in the northeast corner will now have a roller rather than conventional door. RAGLAN Chronicle 5

Raglan says NO to seabed mining Last Sunday 11th March over 200 Raglan residents and their supporters came together to stand in opposition against proposals for an iron sand mining operation off the west coast of the North Island. The silent protest saw the group march up Bow Street and continue towards the oneway bridge to peacefully await iron mining company executive Andy Sommerville, children and adults alike bearing signs that clearly conveyed their position on the issue. Represented by communitybased awareness and advocacy group Kiwi’s Against Seabed Mining (KASM), the protesters lined the bridge as Mr. Sommerville approached. Marching in silence, the intensity of the message was abundantly clear; “We love our coastal marine environment. We are here. We are strong. You will not take our sand.” The message was conveyed to Mr. Sommerville of Trans Tasman Resources on his return from meetings with local iwi about possible plans to explore iron sand deposits off Raglan’s coast. Spoksperson for KASM Phil McCabe said, “We’ve all grown up experiencing the great things our coastal environment can offer. We all have some connection to the environment but there’s no guarantee that it’s going to be here when they’re done. We’re here today in a silent peaceful expression of our love for the marine environment.” New Zealandbased ironore company Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) currently holds a Crown Minerals Prospecting Permit, which grants them exclusive mineral rights over 9633km2 of seabed off the west coast of the North Island. This permit covers three plots of land, one off the coast of southern Taranaki and the other two covering the coastline north and south of Kawhia, including the coast off Raglan. Mr. Sommerville’s visit follows announcements in August last year that minerals (iron) located in the southern Taranaki zone could be almost double what TTR had originally estimated in March 2011, projecting resource estimates to be around 200 million tons in that area alone. The NZ Crown Minerals website now shows three exploration permit applications from TTR which were received

Seabed mining protestors silently make their way across Wainui Bridge only a day after the protest was held. An article published in industry publication Mining Magazine during September last year states, “TTR aims to begin production by the December quarter of 2014, providing Asian markets with, initially, 10 million tons/year … with the potential to increase to 50 million tons/year,” TTR further claim in the article that, “the risks associated with environmental approvals are limited because the target mining areas are located offshore and in very barren areas.” !"#$%&%'(!)*+,!-'#./01!1#!211%314#3!1021!#&%'!5&%!1#36! of seabed sand would be shifted for every ton of ironore concentrate they extract, Furthermore the targeted area directly overlaps with the habitat of the critically endangered Maui’s Dolphin. An unpublished Department of Conservation report estimates the Maui’s dolphin population to currently be less than 80 with

fewer than 25 breeding females. Dave Rastovich, prosurfer and representative of Surfers for Cetaceans, related his experiences in a letter to the Chronicle of living in Burleigh Heads and the effects sand dredging has had on his own community. “I come from a place where we were told the manipulation of sand was not going to negatively affect our greater region, yet it did just that.” “ It seems there are so many unknown components to the practice of seabed mining. Is it worth seabed mining here and risking the extinction of an entire species? Is it worth risking 10%!%314'%!7.1.'%!#7!82/923:6!%;#9#/<!23=!%;#3#><!1#!-%3%51!2! company?” said Dave. KASM urged the wider community to get involved with this issue and invites members of the community to attend a meeting, which will be held at the Town Hall on Tuesday 20th March. Maki Nishiyama

At heart of the decision to close TV 7 is the government’s requirement for a 9% return on its investment from the commercial free to air channels. In other words every aspect of life is now about making money. The idea that it might be worth spending a modest amount of money to have an educated and informed view of the world available is obviously too advanced for the money men. In my more paranoid moments I wonder if an intelligent populace is the last thing those in power want. Our job is to be hardworking consumers watching mindless television, frequently exposed to many ads that increase our desire to spend, spend. I wonder how one goes about starting a revolution?

ARBORIST
