population. A case in point is the latest DNA sampling which indicates that two of the remnant community are in fact South Island Hectors. If they are able to breed with the locals then it undermines the whole “sub species” argument and means that the “critically endangered” label is wrong, as the Southern population is healthy and numerous. If the South Island Hector’s are showing up here, and possibly breeding, why should there not be movement the other way?

Perhaps the local Hector’s dolphin population is reducing due to migration because of environmental reasons?

Pathogens exiting the Waikato River right where the “Maui” population is acknowledged to historically prefer to reside for example... That water also bears various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, nitrates and heavy metals.

No one wants to see this local population of inshore dolphins further decline. That includes the commercial fishers. We consider the present no fishing zones to be adequate, no local trawler has ever caught a “Maui Dolphin”, despite the rhetoric that prevails. We as a group have had extensive bad press, but all recent local “Maui” fatalities have been due to waterborne disease, and recreational fishing, not commercial fishing.

Recreational gillnets, brucellosis and toxoplasmosis are the identified agents responsible in recent years, and, I also strongly suspect, predation by Orca and large sharks.

West Coast Health Clinic: Flu vaccines are ready

Dream could be a reality with your help

Anyone can catch the flu, it is important to be vaccinated before winter arrives.

Aspiring yoga instructor Jocelyn-Rochelle Stewart is going all out to raise money to see her fulfilling her dream of becoming a qualified yoga teacher and she’s asking this community to help her.

The flu vaccine is FREE for people at high risk of complications – those over 65 and anyone under 65( including children) with long term health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease, kidney disease and cancer. The funded vaccine is available until June 30. We encourage all adults to have the flu vaccine – the cost is $25 for clients not eligible for the free vaccination and some patients may require a second jab. For safety reasons there will be a 20 minute wait in the surgery following a flu vaccination.

We are still seeing cases of whooping cough, this disease is most dangerous for infants less than 1 year old, please make sure your children are vaccinated as higher community vaccination rates help protect our younger people - its a collective responsibility.

Kristi Daniel has also joined the practice nurse team this week. She has lived in Raglan since 2006 and has joined the team after working at the Waikato intensive care unit.

accreditation process for PRIME - this is our 24 hour 7 day a week emergency service run alongside the St Johns ambulance service - for anyone requiring urgent medical attention.

Jocelyn-Rochelle Stewart

Rochelle practices Power Living Australia Yoga (P.L.A.Y.) and the only course on offer in this part of the world stretches over two separate week-long intensive training sessions, the first in Byron Bay, Australia in March followed by the second week in Wellington in April.

At very short notice funding promised by her father to meet the course costs is no longer available so rather than get down-hearted about this, JocelynRochelle has been busy selling raffle tickets with some fabulous prizes – it’s a way of helping herself to achieve her goal to bring back her experiences to this town she loves.

“My vision is to be able to teach yoga here in Raglan and while there are quite a few yoga groups operating, and the basic postures are the same, each one has its distinctions”, she says.

Her ‘yoga dream raffle’ has two draws. One prize is an awesome hamper donated by generous business owners from Raglan and surrounding districts. The other prize is six-months free yoga .

Power Living Yoga is designed for the western world and for those who want to get a sweat up with an ideal room temperature of between 3033 degrees centigrade. Jocelyn is passionate about yoga, siting her own experiences in its transformative capacities.

The Fishing Section of the Raglan Club Inc. announces the Judges for the Smokem Raglan inaugural Smoked Fish Competition.

They are Julie Hanna, Colin Chung, Clint Baddeley and Ralph Blanchard.

These Judges, with their knowledge and experiences of local culinary seafood, will bring a great balance to that evening in judging each plated smoked fish. What qualities are required. Ralph in particular has fished and hunted overseas and tasted other countries secrets of their wood and smoking systems. It is leading to an interesting evening with a lot at stake. That winner will definitely earn the trophy and prize and will stand proud.

Unusual new career comes straight from horse’s mouth

Here is the first of what we hope will be a regular series of Q & A’s with our local artists This week we talk to Karla Stevenson, a multitalented artist.

Brief description of your practice?

Mostly for I make jewellery, pottery and a wee bit of painting too.

What are you working on at the moment?

My business Karla Stevenson partners are Hayley and Craig Hamilton, making super fun ceramics, we are called ‘The Monster Company’. Its awesome, the best job ever.

Who are you influenced by?

Um I guess everyone around me.

Equine dentistry makes a lot of horse sense to Raglan West resident Jess Warner – but she reckons everyone looks at her like she’s “talking nonsense” when she reveals her new career.

Jess had just dealt to the sharp enamel points in the mouth of a 24-year-old stallion belonging to an accomplished local equestrian, and at the same time extracted a couple of “wolf teeth” from a two-year-old filly at the same stables, when the Chronicle caught up with her last week.

And then there was some dental work to be done on other locals’ horses up Wainui Road and out Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive where a well known horse-trainer regularly exercises her trotters and pacers on the beach.

The work’s certainly not horsing around, Jess confirms – it’s serious stuff, and physically challenging.

Sometimes she’s elbow-deep inside the mouths of big horses, working with floats or rasps – the tools of the trade – as the horse’s mouth is held wide open by a fixed metal speculum.

“I thought I’m never going to be able to do this, I can’t even find the teeth!” Jess confesses of her first attempts at equine dentistry as a student on a specialised six-month course at Te Kowhai.

She’s been riding and working with horses for 20-odd years, in her native Scotland and in Australia, but when she looked to build on her zoology degree and love of horses it was the NZ Equine Dentistry School – which recently transferred from Pukekohe to Te Kowhai – which caught her eye.

That brought Jess to Raglan, where she works part-time in the local pub while also travelling to stud and even polo farms as part of the NZQA-registered certificate course.

Jess has since discovered not only teeth inside horses’ mouths, but also that accessing them is all about practice and technique – and keeping herself calm. “They relax when you know what you’re doing, and every day you get better (at the job). Every day is a challenge for me.”

Horses’ general wellbeing can be really affected by their teeth, she explains. And it makes “so much sense” to her that pain from the mouth – often aggravated by the wearing of a bit – can create all sorts of other ailments in the horse’s body.

Added to that is the fact horses graze 18 hours a day on hay and different grains which tend to wear down their teeth, often leading to nutrition problems. And unlike humans they can’t actually do without their teeth, Jess points out.

So what’s the most satisfying part of the job? It’s simply to see a horse happier and more comfortable, Jess says. So great is their reliance on their teeth that just half an hour’s work can make all the difference.

A Mondegreen is when you sing a song and get the lyrics wrong, I seem to do quite alot of them. One is the song Reckless, the words are “She don’t like that kind of behaviour” but I thought it went “She don’t like that kind of a haircut”. Lions Club picks up Kopua sculptures in place significant award The Raglan Lions Club has been awarded the District 202L Premier Trophy by Lions Clubs International.

This award is given in recognition of the commitment to meeting the World Presidents objectives 20112012, and the club’s commitment to the operations of the Opportunity Shop, by providing funds to support Raglan community: • youth sports with transport, • surfing and lifesaving education, • the New Year Parade, • local service organisations; • Raglan Community Vehicle Trust, & Community Patrols • Raglan Lions Youth Van, & Raglan Operational Support • community organisations, as well as District Project.

• A net increase in memberships at the end of the year was against the national trend.

President Bob MacLeod received the Award at the Weekend Conference on behalf of the Club.

Harvesting of fruit and vegetables and our surpluses, is great at this time of the year.

Actual gardening is hard, with the stress put on plants. We are in survival mode, all of us.

For how much longer we don’t know. The season has changed to autumn and young seed needs to be started for the coming months.

Dead plants need to be taken out, gardens need that breather before next seasons plants go in. Rain is needed on the soil, plenty of it to refresh. I wish. Fruit trees abound with peaches and apples. It has been good and dry for them. Plums also but they have finished. You can prune out lengthy branches after the fruit has been picked. We have lost our passion fruit vine because of the conditions; I thought I had it good and healthy but it has folded in the last few weeks. We will clear and replant. Roses have had it good with flowering still continuing. You can take cuttings now and start in seedling mix. Crush the end, dip in manuka honey and it should strike.

Also trim back surplus rose canes.

Vegetables are in harvest mode, freeze and bottle the surplus. Many people still do it in this town. You hear “have you tried my plum sauce recipe”, and away they go and write it out and make it, give a jar away, then the give out recipe again and on it goes. Great.

Plenty of seeds can go in, pansies, violas, stocks, silver beet, spinach, cabbages, broccoli. Iceland Poppies are very fine and plants are a better option. We always weigh up now, are we too early, is it an Indian summer, but just do it and the season will prevail for better or worse.

The two imposing sculptures commissioned to flank the entrance to Raglan Kopua Holiday Park are now both in place but the date for a public celebration of the giant works of art has yet to be set in stone.

Richard Page’s depiction of a large toki with its blade pointing skyward has finally been joined by an equally impressive Tai Meuli work in two distinct parts, one of them representing the sail of a waka.

The larger Meuli work still had temporary supports in place last week, and remained fenced off, but these were removed over the weekend.

However there was still some minor landscaping of the site and

illumination of the sculptures to be completed to the artists’ specifications.

And park board chairman Colin Chung was expecting the two prominent sculptors to face quite a challenge in condensing down the complex meaning of their works into the small amount of space available on descriptive plaques that will be attached to the bases of each sculpture.

Colin still hoped though that an official ceremony, incorporating a powhiri and blessing, could be organised for some time this month to acknowledge the twin “gifts to the community”.

The commissioning of the sculptures followed a public competition organised by the Old School Arts Centre.

Shortlisted conceptual designs were judged jointly by

representatives of the arts centre, holiday park and the Waikato District Council’s coastal reserves advisory committee.

The panel – headed by convener Wanda Barker and including Jean Carbon, Amanda Watson, Colin, Pablo Rickard, Rob Clark and Linda Cole – were so impressed with the designs that they proceeded with not one but two of them.

Colin says it’s extremely pleasing to see some of the financial surplus achieved from successful operation of the holiday park channelled into “these inspirational public artworks for Raglan-Whaingaroa”.

And they’re not just to be admired from a distance, either: Colin points out the brief was for sculptures the public can touch and embrace. Edith Symes

Daniel Kereopa has clean swept the Stand Up Paddleboard Division for 2013 Hyundai Tour, winning the final event at Mount Maunganui to make it five from five.

His dominance throughout the year had him only requiring a last place finish in the final event to claim the Tour. However

the all-around waterman was not prepared to go out like that stamping his mark on the year with a win 0.04 points ahead of Shayne Baxter (Chch). Baxter (Chch) finished runner up in the final as well as on tour with Te Peehi Farlie (Tolaga Bay) placing third and local Armie Armstrong placing fourth.

Belinda Goodwin took a come from behind victory in the Women’s Longboard Division

after going into the final event ranked second. Her runner up placing last weekend was enough to see her leap frog Mischa Davis (Piha) and claim the 2013 Tour title.

Armie Armstrong won the Stand Up Paddleboard Short Course Race. It was his fourth win from five events which was easily enough for him to claim the 2013 Tour title.

Letter To the Editor, Maui’s Dolphin Day was a hit this year with a fantastic turn-out. Our community really cares! This was evident in the recycled rafts and fashion show, showing our community’s enthusiasm and flair for recycling and reuse. It showed in the kids’ answers to all our quiz questions about Maui’s Dolphins. It was a great opportunity for local groups to raise funds.

Junior soccer fun day and muster this weekend

Raglan Junior Soccer invites anyone interested in playing soccer to their muster and fun football session at Kopua Domain this Saturday.

We have invited Waikato Football Development Officer Simon Mead out to run a fun coaching session to coincide with our Muster so bring your boots along and join in the fun!

The session is for any child of primary or intermediate age who enjoys soccer or just wants to try it out.

There is no cost and no obligation to join the club either if you come along.

As well as having lots of coaching experience Simon is also great fun with the kids and is keen to show us how the new ‘Junior Framework’ for 5th and 6th grade will work this year.

The junior framework is a new approach to coaching junior soccer in New Zealand and is being rolled out across the Waikato in 2013 after two years of trials. The trial clubs have reported a great deal of success with the system and something that everyone in Raglan will appreciate is that there will be less driving across the divvy this year for our littlest players.

Simon Mead is a full time coach who currently works with Waikato rep squads and the Waikato Women’s team.

As well having extensive coaching experience here and in places like Brazil he directs junior football development in the Waikato region and is responsible for coaching the coaches.

Simon is currently completing a Master’s degree in coaching but is most at home out on a soccer pitch creating fun sessions for young soccer players.

This week at Raglan Fish All Day Friday: Specially Priced Meal Deals!

Great snapper fishing, in close 8-15m of water and 45 mins North of the Raglan Bar.

These fish are full of sea biscuits (see photo). The sea floor of this bay must have masses of these biscuits FRIDAY NIGHT 5-8pm: and snapper of all sizes are just Teky Trio performs live jazz & blues vacuuming them up. Each day we 92 Wallis St Raglan, ph: 825 7544 would catch our limit in just over an hour. Our problem was to get the bait to the bottom before the kahawai took it on the way down. Bait on the bottom, whamo another snapper.

22lb was the biggest with a few between 10 and 14lbs. Gannets were working every day, with workups having up to 50 birds diving and pummeling the baitfish. So kahawai was caught for smoking. Not many gurnard or sharks were caught up there. My mate fished the shallows off Ruapuke beach, the sea was dead and got one gurnard, the bronze whalers were around too. Other boats struggled with catches too out at 30m and beyond.

Albacore and skippies prevail outside of Jackson’s Reef to Gannet Island. In Brief

The Cambridge man was resuscitated and treated on Ocean Beach by Dr Mike Loten, Bush and colleague Jan Tapp after a couple of kitesurfers brought him ashore.

He was flown by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance from Ocean Beach to Waikato Hospital in what was described as a serious condition. However he made a rapid recovery and was discharged on Monday.

Sonic booms not so super A glance out to sea and it was quickly back to grim reality for environmental campaigner Phil McCabe after the buzz of Maui’s Dolphin Day last Saturday.

“Driving home from the amazing day [at Kopua Domain] I look out onto the horizon and see a huge seismic survey vessel letting off sonic booms into the Maui’s home every 30 seconds,” he posted on Facebook the next day.

“Who in FB [Facebook] land gives a shit about that?”

Many apparently do. Within a short time about a dozen fellow Facebookers had responded with comments ranging from “Un-bloody-believable” to “Let’s sink the bastards”.

The local Coastguards Bar Safety day is well worth attending for greater awareness and knowledge.

Training sessions will be conducted in the harbour on rescue and paddling techniques. A number of New Zealand’s most experienced sea kayakers will be present to assist both novice and experienced sea kayakers.

On Friday evening a Parachute and Handflare demonstration, subject to weather conditions, will be conducted on the waters edge near the campground. Residents should not be alarmed when they see flares being deployed between the hours 8.0 to 9 pm. Police, Fire and other agencies have been alerted.

I believe we should honour both dolphin and Maori and get it right! Maui dolphins would be correct! We do not say sheeps.

And few people mongrelise Maori proper nouns.

I think honouring these animals is worthy, and using Maori correctly is worth doing also.
