Over the coming issues the Chronicle will be talking to locals with a love of classic and vintage cars.

This week we caught up with Peter Storey.

I bought this 1929 Buick sedan in about 1995 and it was completely stripped down to practically the last nut and bolt. It had last been on the road in approximately 1968.

I have several classic cars and this one is the only one of them that I have completely restored. Some jobs I have had to leave for the experts and finding the spare money has been a bit of a challenge.

The car sat for a year or so substantially finished but without the upholstery done while I looked around for something to sell so I could have that completed too.

While away on holiday last year my wife, Robbyn decided to get it upholstered as a surprise for my birthday… I think she was sick of listening to me complain about not being able to finish it.

I bought this car after spending a few years assisting my father restore a 1924 Chevy. When that was complete I was looking around for another project and found this.

I have always had a thing for Vintage cars (those built prior to 1931) and although the rest of my cars don’t fit into that category I far prefer the early ones. I think it is the simple engineering and the fact they are getting rarer.

The Buick drives like a very old car, heavy steering, wanders all over the road and is quite slow - it is very comfortable though.

The best journey I have done in it is returning home with its first warrant of fitness and rego in 45+ years.

Best thing about the car is the satisfaction of knowing I have turned a garage full of parts into a driving ‘road legal’ vehicle.

I spent too many hours to remember on this car and quite a few dollars…can’t put a price on the satisfaction though!

Elusive Raglan by the River: Map indicates a Raglan alongside the Wairau River and on same spot as Kowhai Point Reserve

C

ould it be New Zealand has a Raglan by the river as well as a Raglan by the sea?

An authoritative set of maps used by thousands of holidaying Kiwis certainly suggests so.

The maps in the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association’s travel directory -- or bible as members reverently call it -show a Raglan alongside the Wairau River barely 15 minutes or a river stone’s throw away from St Arnaud at the head of Nelson Lakes National Park.

But try to find this South Island imposter apparently piggybacking on Raglan by the sea’s popularity and you’ll come up emptyhanded.

The maps show the elusive southern Raglan in the exact same spot as the Kowhai Point Scenic Reserve, a quiet to the point

of desolate Doc camp with two long-drop toilets, a picnic table and a handful of tent sites.

Information boards at the reserve entrance have a plethora of information about the types of birds and vegetation in the area, along with its history as the base for one of the many “surfacemen” who once maintained the vital early road link between Blenheim and Westport.

But there’s not a single reference to Raglan to be found, just as there isn’t among all the information boards at the chalet-like Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre up the road.

The Chronicle talked to Doc staff, the owners of St Arnaud general store, local realtors and Uncle Tom Cobbly and all, and the best anyone could come up with was that the Raglan listing might relate to the

nearby Raglan range.

However that seems unlikely as the maps show all the ranges in the area in a different, italicised typeface.

Several locals thought a farm in the area might be called ‘The Raglan’ but attempts to find a phone listing or the names of the owners also drew a blank.

The Chronicle went looking for the farm, whose entrance is supposedly near the Wash Bridge which DOC mentions in its directions to Kowhai Point, but again no luck.

The only thing that seems certain is that there is in fact no Raglan in the Nelson Lakes area. Mind you, the waves generated by the monstrous hydroplanes at a recent speedboat regatta at St Arnaud’s Lake Rotoiti looked definitely surfable.

hen you start out as a five year old and get a ton of encouragement from your mad-keen surfing dad there’s a good chance you will grow into a mad-keen surfer yourself; such is the case with three local lads who are beginning to take that passion for the sport out into the world of competition surfing.

Jayden Willoughby and Kora Cooper, Year 7 students at Raglan Area School along with Navryn Malone in Year 6, have returned from their first taste of The Billabong Grom Series, a three competition event held at The Mount, Whangamata and Piha, standing up to compete in the U14 division and doing themselves proud.

“They are having a great time, really enjoying the competition. All three are super keen surfers, just like their Dads and they are all members of Raglan Point Boardriders Club,” says Jayden’s mum Kaz

With half a decade each surfing experience tucked into their tender years it isn’t surprising to hear that the three are seasoned enough to have become regulars surfing the often challenging conditions at Manu Bay, even in winter.

With the Billabong Grom Series now under their belts plans ahead are to enter the Rip Curl Grom Surf in March at Fitzroy in Taranaki along with the NZ Primary Schools Surfing Comp in Gisborne in November, as well as any surfing events held at home-base. Sue Russell

Controversial building to start W

ork is finally set to start on a long-awaited and controversial house, which will be built on a piece of land by the lagoon at Whale Bay. Hohua Warren Hemi had been battling to build a family home at the site for at least ten years.

He planned to clear 600sq m of mahoe trees to build a 259sq m single-level house plus a salt-water pool that would be self-sufficient in water, power and other services. A 400sq m camping and picnic area near the beach part of the property would be open to people with ancestral links to the land to use.

Whale Bay resident Tim Duff said the bulldozers were scheduled to start earthworks on the site next Monday.

Tim - a friend of Dr Helen Ritchie, who had long opposed the building - said neighbours had been informed about the upcoming excavations as part of the resource consent process.

Tim also posted the information on the Raglan Noticeboard last week, but the notice was removed within a couple of hours because it was deemed offensive. However, it received 60 comments in the first hour.

“So I thought ‘wow, the community really doesn’t know [that the building work was about

to start] and they want to know’,” he said.

In 2005, the Waikato District Council’s regulatory committee denied Mr Hemi’s 2005 application for resouce consent at the site because of “an unacceptable risk of coastal inundation”.

Mr Hemi appealed to the Environment Court, which granted him consent in 2010, against the wishes of neighbour Dr Helen Ritchie, whose parents had bought the adjoining property in 1990.

“We do not see that this application will open the floodgates or set a precedent… full research has been undertaken into the various effects, and a design which is both sympathetic to the environment and cognisant of the importance of it has been presented,” Judge Melanie Harland said in the Environment Court’s 2010 decision.

The Hemi and Ritchie properties, previously owned by Clarence and Caryl Te Puke, were subject to a cross lease that allowed for a house to be built on the socalled ‘Hemi land’.

A “humble but well-used bach” had previously been on this land, but it was destroyed by fire in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. Mr Hemi subsequently agreed to buy the land in 1997 through his family trust.

The Environment Court

acknowledged the strong links both Mr Hemi and Dr Ritchie had with Te Whaanga.

As a child Mr Hemi and his family had camped on this land and had referred to the late Mr and Mrs Te Puke as his uncle and aunt.

“Dr Ritchie also has strong links to the Te Whaanga area. She spent childhood holidays at Te Whaanga and for some years she has called it her home,” the court noted.

The court considered the environmental effects of the building proposal in terms of coastal hazard, the existing ecology of the site and the impact on natural character, landscape and amenity values.

“Cultural effects also need to be considered, as in this case there is a dispute between hapu as to whether or not a building is appropriate on the site at all.”

Mr Hemi was supported in his application by the Waikato District Council and Angeline Greensill, a trustee of a local trust that owned adjoining land and a spokesperson for a number of local hapu.

“Originally, the house Mr Hemi proposed to build was large.

Not surprisingly, his proposal attracted much interest in the local community,” Judge Harland said.

A revamped proposal moved the house six metres further away from the lagoon to reduce to 600sq

m the area of 20-30-year-old mahoe forest that would need to be removed for the construction of the house.

“The 600m2 equates to one quarter of the existing vegetation which the ecologists have categorised as significant, because of its link to the Mt Karioi coastal vegetation sequence.”

The trust proposed to restore and maintain six times (4320sq m) the amount of vegetation lost and to replace exotic vegetation with locally genetically sourced species of plant, although the judge noted that growth would be slow because of its coastal setting.

Mr Hemi proposed using solar energy for his new house, supported by a bio-diesel backup motor, and a sewerage system that drip-fed clean runoff to an irrigation field.

“The proposal also provides a camping and picnic area of approximately 400m2 near the boulder beach, so that those with ancestral links to the land can, despite its private ownership, continue to enjoy camping there and using it as a base for gathering kaimoana.”

Judge Harland noted that the proposal had strong support from local hapu with a long-standing association with the site and with Te Whaanga.

Visitor takes on challenge

One special visitor to this town has become so captivated by the inspiring work of child cancer support charity ‘Camp Quality’ that he has set himself the ambitious challenge of paddle-boarding around extensive parts of the North Island coast to raise, he hopes, significant funds for it.

French man Martin Ferrand currently calls Lazy Stayz his home though in between studying at Wintec, where he is completing a Masters in Marketing year and the daily grind of paddle-boarding training out around our coast, he doesn’t have time to do much relaxing there.

Camp Quality began in New Zealand in 1985 and since then has set about to give children aged from 5 – 16 years of age living with cancer quality time at annual camps held throughout the country and on-going free support.

For Martin, whose initial contact with the cause was in an unexpected meeting in Hamilton with a group of children and a man involved in the Camp Quality, the goal he has set is one demanding not only extreme fitness but great courage.

“I talked to the children and said I wanted to do something for them.”

“When I train, I go out to about 500 metres distance from the shore, no further, as this is really the limit of safety for me,” explains Martin Martin trains for at least two hours on the board every day, building up stamina to be ready for the 5 June start of his adventure in Wellington. The intention is to raise a minimum of $15,000 for Camp Quality.

As if study and the rigours of a full-on training schedule were not enough, Martin has put his computing skills to good use setting up a website for those interested in following his experience, keeping up with where he is at along the journey and especially donating toward the cause.

“I am actually a bit scared of what lies ahead for me but the team I have supporting this are great and I really can’t wait for it all to begin.”

Same church - new name

O celebrated

n Sunday Vision Church changing its name to Activate Church, joining a community of likeminded churches throughout New Zealand within the ACTS Churches denomination.

Pastor Andrew Roughton explained that it’s a name and logo change but that it doesn’t change the DNA of the church or what they believe. “In the New Testament Paul writes to a church in Thessalonica, which is now the second-largest city in Greece, and he says, ‘We always remember your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.’

What an awesome reputation that

church had. We’d like to be like that – known for the love and good work we do around here.”

The name change has been an opportunity to upgrade the presentation of our building and a lot of people put in a huge effort to get it looking good for the celebration. Andrew is quick to say though that, “ultimately Activate Church isn’t about the building – it’s about a bunch of really amazing people who are here to activate faith and the goodness of God in the Raglan community.” Church services are Sunday at 10am on Taipari Ave, next to the playground.

aglan Roll Up has received the Raglan Chamber of Commerce’s first business innovation award.

A presentation was made at the Bow Street ice cream and takeaway shop to the surprised and delighted owner, Teresa.

Chamber of Commerce chair Dave Currie said the local business organisation wanted to recognise businesses that had done something creative, innovative and different for summer.

Roll Up’s back garden fit the bill, with its tomato plants and herbs creating “a simple but lovely feeling”.

“We thought, for a small operation, they have been innovative. They deserve it [the award],” Dave said.

Dave said the chamber would be giving out more of the innovation awards in due course.

Smoked Fish Challenge will be held on Easter Sunday 5th April at the Raglan Club. The 2015 Smokem Raglan total prize pool is now $500.00. If you can smoke fish you should be in to win.

This year Hydraflow Industries have donated an Anuka Electric Hot Smoker valued at $249.00. The committee has decided that this will be a drawn prize.

After the judging has been completed, this Anuka Smoker will be drawn, for those who have entered a smoked fish. These remarkable versatile smokers are already used in Raglan by a number of fish smokers, and we thank Hydraflow for supporting our event.

Venue – Raglan Club. Bow Street.

Date 5th April. Entries submitted 4.00pm to 5.30pm. Judging Commences 6.00pm.

Free to enter. Fish must be locally caught. Snapper, eel, kahawai, trevally, kingfish, flounder, stingray, mullet etc. No trout or salmon.

It must be smoked on your family/friends smoker, no commercially smoked fish is eligible. Only one entry per person.Your entry will be entered, coded and presented on the judging table on plain supplied plates.

Local celebrity judging panel will commence judging at 6.00pm and make comments on pieces as they proceed, then go into recess to evaluate each entry and make their final decision. The winners will be announced and the judges decision final.

Top Prize is the ‘Bruce Tricklebank Trophy’ and $250.00 cash.

Top Smoked Smoked Fish by a Raglan Club member receives the ‘Bill Edwards Trophy’ plus $50.00 cash.

Then from all the entries we will draw the Anuka Smoker.

The tabled smoked fish will then be released for those attending to sample.

Note if you need a fish to smoke enquire to the Management of the Raglan Club Inc. This is a fiercely contested event, where again reputations are at stake. Put yourself on the line, we don’t want to see this won by someone outside of Raglan.

Sincere Funeral Services: Cindy Kiel I was raised in Whatawhata and spent many years in Raglan with family who lived here and am still an active member within the community.

Although not currently living in Raglan, I am still part of the local singing group where we entertain residents at Raglan Trust Hospital every fortnight, and support many of the community ventures by singing at many of them.

My interest in the industry goes back to when I was a child and I would observe my mum who sometimes had the task of cleaning and preparing deceased family members, which I found quite fascinating.

Living in Australia for a number of years, I got my first real insight into the funeral industry. My ex husband was invited to train on an embalming course, where we eventually moved into the residence above the funeral home with our three sons.

On my return to NZ I was lucky enough to be offered the chance again by one of the top leading

funeral homes in Hamilton to work and train alongside them, for which I am very grateful. I worked with them for 9 years, and learned so much about the industry. Over these nine years I have taken care of many of our local Raglan families who have lost loved ones and it is my hope that I will still continue to serve all our local families. My Cindy Kiel funeral home has been active since December 2014, we are family owned and operated and we are truly committed to providing the best quality and service to all those who come into our care.

Waikato Regional Council is supporting Raglan Coastguard to run another of its popular bar crossing courses on Sunday 22 March.

The courses give advice on the safest way to cross the bar and what hazards to look out for.

As a child I was brought up in a strict religious home and baptised at the age of 12.

It was important for us to learn scripture and keep the seventh day holy – no radios or games, etc on the Sabbath. As this was part of my life I accepted it but in my latter teenage years I felt I had missed out not being able to participate in weekend sport, etc. I later met and married a man who did not share my faith and I walked away from my religious upbringing to join him in other activities instead of going to Church.

After having three children I went through a period of ill health including a series of operations over a five year period, all with complications, and later suffered for many years with myalgia encephalomyelitis.

This caused much frustration in my marriage and after twenty four years I went through the trauma of separation and divorce.

ome of you may have already met out lovely new naturopath Sam. She came down to Raglan to work for us over the summer period and loved it so much (and we loved her!) that she has decided to stay.

Her connection to Raglan came from coming here with family and friends on weekend trips and always saying ‘I want to live here’.

Sam is from Auckland and studied at Wellpark College where she graduated last year with a Bachelor of Naturopathy.

Her studies included health science, nutrition and herbal medicine. She was first drawn to natural medicine because she wanted to help with her family’s health. Originally she was more interested in nutrition but then decided on naturopathy as she became more interested in the herbs.

Sam also completed a certificate in relaxation massage, as she saw the benefits of therapeutic touch and wanted to offer her clients an all round holistic approach.

She has recently added to repertoire of skills by completing an aromatherapy course.

Naturopath Sam Heazlewood Sam used to work as a nanny and finds helping children with their health with nutrition and herbs fascinating and very rewarding having seen the difference it makes to the child and their family.

Sam enjoys keeping fit and active by running and doing yoga although her main passion is cooking tasty and nutritious food.

Reiki’s Xfactor journey continues Raglan’s talented teenage musician, Reiki Ruawai, has made it through to the next round of TV3’s X-Factor New Zealand.

With the auditions finished and the first round of selections over, the next step for Reiki (15) was to make the final cut of six performers in the boys section, who would then be mentored by British singer and X-Factor judge Natalia Kills.

Coming out of X-Factor ‘boot camp’, Reiki took to the stage with his guitar and gave a powerful performance of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come”, with an excited mum Naomi and sister Kaen in the audience.

In the six-seat challenge, which was broadcast on Sunday, Natalia had to choose just six young men who would progress to her retreat round. Reiki was one of them.

“This competition is about a recording contract. You can hear his [Reiki’s] voice on the radio. He’s got the look, he’s got the voice – I reckon

he’d be in your top three,” fellow X-Factor judge Stan Wa l k e r said to Natalia.

‘He’d definitely g i v e Reiki Ruawai [popular teenage singer] Justin Beiber a run for his money,” said another judge, former All Saints singer Melanie Blatt.

The four judges had each been assigned a particular group of hopefuls to mentor (girls, boys, over-25s and groups). They would then each select their top three contestants, who would make up the final 12 to progress through to the live shows.

The winner of X-Factor NZ would receive a contract with Sony Music Entertainment New Zealand.

Shortly afterward, a friend who had been very helpful to me during this time invited me to church and at that first meeting I realised I needed Jesus back in my life. I recommitted my life to Jesus and discovered peace and comfort through my trying times.

A few years later I met Keith, a lovely Christian man who is now my husband.

Between us we have six children and seventeen grandchildren, who we love very much. Now we are retired we enjoy more family time, speak at meetings and share the love of Jesus with others, especially those who have gone through the trauma of divorce and suffering. We share how, by trusting in Jesus to be Lord of our lives, he heals our hurts and helps us to forgive the past and move on into a rich and loving relationship with each other and with Him. Big turnout hoped for TPPA Rally will again W haingaroa be rallying against the

Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) at the jetty at the foot of Bow St from 10am on Saturday 7 March.

We will be joining New Zealanders in 21 cities and towns in nationwide action against TPPA as negotiations draw to a conclusion.

TPPA is a ‘free-trade’ agreement being negotiated among 12 Pacific Rim countries including Australia, Vietnam and the USA. Trans-national

corporations seek advantage at the cost of public health, general well-being and the environment.

7 March was chosen as it was before the next round of the secret negotiations. This was billed to be a Ministers’ meeting that would make the final political decisions about TPPA. This midMarch TPPA Ministers’ meeting has been reduced to another meeting of TPPA negotiators; the Ministers’ meeting is now programmed for April, suggesting that the negotiating teams are still apart on key issues.

suggest there are strong disagreements between the US and other countries on intellectual property, agricultural subsidies, tariff elimination, and financial services. Medical groups have expressed concern about the impact of TPPA on Pharmac and public health outcomes.

Group member, Joan Havemann, who will be one of the speakers at the rally, said ‘every aspect of the TPPA is concerning, especially the secrecy of the negotiations.’

According to rally organisers, the TPP agreement would enable big multinational corporations

greater power to dictate government policy for their own ends through Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) used in foreign courts. ‘Peru wanted to stop a metal smelter polluting the air with sulphur but relented after being threatened with an $800 million compensation claim under a similar agreement’, said Havemann.

‘ISDS allows foreign companies to sue governments where they undertake action that reduces investor profits. A similar claim is being taken to stop Germany getting rid of nuclear power.’

New Zealand is presently suffering the chilling effect of the case that tobacco giant Phillip Morris is pursuing against Australia for that country’s plain packaging legislation of 2012.

New Zealand’s similar legislation has been delayed by the National Government, who have stalled moving

forward with it until the Australian case is determined. A smoke-free globe is the object of the World Health Organisation’s Convention on Tobacco Control to which both New Zealand and Australia are signatories.

Havemann said, ‘If the tobacco lobby can undermine global public health conventions, imagine the pressure big oil and coal would place on our global efforts to rein in climate change.’

The 7 March rally will be similar to the November event, which had over 300 on Bow St. There will be live music and a few speakers, but, instead of a march, we will build a TPPA Action raft for the Maui Dolphin Day raft race the next day. So bring banners and other materials to make a ‘sink the TPPA’ raft and have a fun day.

Farmers urged to watch health as big dry grinds on Farmers in Waikato and South Auckland are being urged to watch out for their health as the stress of managing in the extremely dry conditions this summer grinds on.

John Bubb, a Hauraki representative on the Waikato Rural Support Trust, said the ongoing pressure of managing in the dry conditions, such as extra feeding out of supplements, was placing a strain on many.

Mr Bubb urged farmers to look after their physical and mental health in the circumstances.

“Attending events, such as field days, is also a good way of getting some

time off the farm and talking to others who’re in the same boat with things. It’s important not to get isolated in tough times. Look out for events being run by Beef+LambNZ and DairyNZ, such as the ‘Tactic for tight times’ series being run across the region.”

The agencies – including the trust, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Federated Farmers, industry bodies, Auckland Council and Waikato Regional Council – will continue to closely monitor conditions and how they are affecting farmers and the general community.

“We’ll look to provide further advice depending on how things go,” said Mr Bubb.
