You seem to ignore that these questions have been asked before by people who are experts rather than simply informed by anecdotal evidence and a fear for their livelihood.

You also ignore that its now or never for these creatures. We won’t get a second chance. Banning netting means some people may need help and

In a sequel to this event, Raglan Police called two days later to report a smaller whale stranded on the beach between Rangitoto Point and Mussel Rock. Sir Mark Todd and Te Uku equestrian Jody Hartstone at the ‘Horse of the Year’ show in Hastings

He was her knight in shining armour and she the fair maiden – and together the newly knighted Sir Mark Todd and accomplished Te Uku equestrian Jody Hartstone did dressage with a difference at the recent Horse of the Year Show down-country in Hastings.

It was just a bit of horseplay for the pair who – to the delight of the crowds – hammed it up in hired costumes to medieval music at what’s touted as one of the biggest sporting events in the southern hemisphere.

But for Jody, who’s ridden internationally for New Zealand for 15 years now, their demo was the highlight of this year’s annual show.

It’s a show at which Jody has twice taken top titles on horses she both imports and breeds on the family farm just out of Raglan.

And although she missed a placing this time round, Jody got to show off her new stallion Ali Baba – a “hardy breed� from Portugal, she proudly pointed out to the Chronicle.

He behaved spectacularly, she said, for the dressage display with Sir Mark.

In contrast Mark had to put up with a borrowed horse for the occasion, and one

which apparently behaved less than well.

Sir Mark – back home from England specially for the show – did however get to ride Ali Baba, said a delighted Jody, and they were captured on camera by TV One for the whole nation to see.

Jody’s met the Olympic horseman before on her travels around the world but reckons it was good to get to know him better this time. And all his past misdemeanours seem to have been forgiven, she added.

Mark is in fact “a bit of a hero� in horse circles, Jody revealed, and was certainly “hot property� during the week-long show.

Students from Raglan Area School who walked the ‘3 bridges’ in support of Atea

Last Saturday approximately 70 individual walkers and teams set off at the crack of dawn to walk the fundraiser trek for local girl, Atea Kahutapu Haenga - Te Wheoro.

Leaving the golf course at 5am, they embarked on a 43-kilometre walk around Mt. Karioi with hours later.

My Darling Lemon Thyme: From Blog to Book but hadn’t ever seen a food blog before.”

Fast-forward to the present day and food blogging has seen a surge in popularity. There’s now a New Zealand Food Bloggers Association, an annual conference and numerous food writers sharing their stories and recipes online.

For Emma too, the last few years have been a whirlwind of action. My Darling Lemon Thyme now receives around 90 000 visitors a month, she’s been featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Emma Galloway

When former Raglan chef her food blog, My Darling Lemon Thyme in July 2010, food blogging in New Zealand was still very much in its infancy.

Emma herself was brand new to the concept; she’d picked up a book by American cookbook author Heidi Swanson in Raglan Library, which in turn led her to Swanson’s blog 101 Cookbooks.

“I was kind of blown away,” she says. “I knew about blogs

She’s also achieved her lifelong goal of writing a cookbook, securing a publishing deal with Harper Collins New Zealand in November last year.

Having spent the previous 12 months knocking on publisher’s doors with proposals, Emma says being approached through her blog made a welcome change. “It was nice because I haven’t had to convince them,” she says. “It’s hard to get publishing deals if you don’t have that platform.”

Inspired by fresh, simple

food made from real ingredients, Emma’s recipes are vegetarian and gluten-free. But the cookbook (like the blog) won’t be marketed as such. “If I was to splash glutenfree all across the front, that would cut out most people,” she explains.

“I’m hoping that people just take the book for what it is, rather than what it isn’t.”

Now based in Perth, Emma and her family have recently been back in Raglan, catching up with friends and family. It’s an experience that, at times, has seemed a little surreal to the mum of two. “I kind of forget when I’m writing my blog that anyone actually reads it,” she says. “I’ve come home and people know my whole life story.”

But the blurring of personal life and recipe inspiration is part and parcel of the blogging experience. “Most of the food blogs I absolutely love do share more than just the food,” says Emma. “It’s the story and that person’s life that you get involved with.”

Emma says her style has and credits the consistent work that goes into maintaining a blog

with helping to hone her food writing draft posts,” she says. “The blog has been such good practice for the book.”

She’s also had to brush up on her photo skills, and says that learning the styling secrets of food photography has been her biggest challenge.

“There’s been a lot of crash learning and late nights just fumbling my way through it,” she admits. “I’m pretty

anal with the photos. I’m a really visual person - as so many people are - and I pretty much judge a recipe easy because that’s what I’ve always done.”

Retaining wall to be built at Wainui Reserve Remedial works to the main beach access track at Wainui Reserve in Raglan are scheduled to begin next week and will involve the construction of a retaining wall.

The construction is due to start on Tuesday 2 April and is expected to be completed by Friday 17 May. The beach access track will remain open to pedestrians throughout the project, but there may be some minor disruption due to the work.

Waikato District Council Acting General Manager Service Delivery Stephen Cox said the works were a result of subsidence of the track which required a retaining wall to be

built to minimise the risk of a slip.

“If no work is undertaken the access track will continue to subside in the future with the potential for the track to disappear resulting in no access to the beach for emergency services.”

Mr Cox said the subsidence was likely caused by “coastal erosion at the base of the slope”.

The works will involve excavation of the walkway asphalt, minor vegetation clearing, installation of retaining post and panels, followed by reinstatement of the track.

The project was put out to tender with Rock Control Limited the successful contractors.

Wainui Bush Park now has a stylish new gazebo overlooking a clearing which, surrounded by trees and with its own pond and trickling stream, has become a popular venue for weddings and picnics.

A feature of the shelter is the use of southern mahogany gum for the roof beams and also in the bench seats at either end.

The gum logs came from

the late Neal and Dorothy Gavin’s Raglan woodlot, but bowed so badly when milled that they were considered useless. However the natural curve and great strength of the wood proved ideal for the shelter, where the laminated gum beams attach to the top of the conventional tantalised pine uprights.

Surf’s up for Raglan’s newest neighbourhood An exciting new landmark in the historic growth of Raglan is being unveiled in April.

A new neighbourhood has been inspired and nurtured by one of our own, David Peacocke, who was compelled to act after watching recent growth in the town diminish the character of Raglan.

“With the last development boom of the 90’s, we saw the generic suburban house subdivisions arrive in town and these, in my opinion, are starting to undermine what makes Raglan so special” he says.

One of the key issues for David has been the continual sprawl of the town’s housing to the south along Main Road and the destruction of its entry. It pulls the town away from its foreshore. destination and is now being discovered by a wider audience,” he says. “People want to be closer to the surf, our coast and our town – why are we trying to grow the town away from where people want to be?”

Such was his conviction about this, David pulled together a talented and experienced design, planning and engineering team to rise to the challenge of catering for Raglan’s projected growth in a way that recognises that Raglan is a special place.

The team consider that the Rangitahi Peninsula is an ideal area to accommodate the future growth of Raglan. Team lead designer, James Lunday points out why.

“The Rangitahi Peninsula is much more closely associated to the town centre than many other areas. It is close to the school, golf course and existing residential areas. Yes, it’s separated by water, but these are small local channels and crossings with bridges and causeways have always been a feature of Raglan” he says.

Over recent months the team has shaped up an exciting development for the peninsula that would see only a third of the land area used for development while the balance is retained as a farm or is regenerated as

bush. It represents true Raglan values: community, coast and farming.

“This is much more in keeping with the Raglan I’ve known for the last 35 years” says David. “Our relative isolation meant we had to protect our environment, be innovative and embrace sustainability. This is what I wanted embodied in Rangitahi” David’s company - Raglan Land Company - is proposing to rezone approximately 100 hectares of land on the Rangitahi Peninsula by launching a Private Plan Change (Plan Change 12) that will seek the zoning of the Rangitahi Peninsula be amended from Coastal Zone to a new zone called the “Rangitahi Living Zone”.

The proposal sees the development of a master planned community based on sustainability principles.

As James points out: “We are striving for something special.

Plan Change 12 for the Rangitahi Peninsula is designed to enable Raglan to grow in a way that supports the town’s identity and uniqueness whilst also protecting the cultural, ecological and landscape values of the land, the settlement, the wider landscape and the harbour.”

An obviously proud David points out that the approach taken delivers over 10km of integrated walkways, cycleways and bridle paths.

“Raglan is a coastal village with highly distinctive and desirable urban qualities that underpin its reputation as a lifestyle destination. It is vital that the seaside village character is maintained.”

Easter SUP racing offers fun day for bunnies too Stand up paddleboard racing comes to Whaingaroa harbour bigtime this Easter Saturday and anyone, from beginners to experienced paddlers, will be able to give it a go.

The Raglan event is part of a Nisco SUP race series which successfully debuted in Whitianga recently.

And while organisers say it’s a great opportunity for anyone to try out for themselves what’s become the fastest-growing

sport on the globe since snowboarding, the fun day will also double as a community fundraiser with all proceeds going towards security cameras to help stop vehicle breakins and thefts at local surf spots.

Auckland promoter Luke Thompson, a

self-described “wannabe local” who was running auctions and DJing at Raglan’s very successful kite jam fundraiser recently, reckons the Stand Up Raglan summer and winter.

While this inaugural event will focus on short, family fun races in the Kopua estuary, Luke hopes to include more serious longdistance paddleboarding in future events.

But meantime the focus is to bring what has become an elite sport back “down to grassroots”.

All competitors, from kids to pros like local legend DK and Armie Armstrong, need to roll up to Kopua domain at 9am and register for the races – which will be ordered according to age and abilities – then they can put in a couple of hours’ practice out on the water before the SUP racing begins for real.

All the gear’s supplied – board, paddle, safety leash and vest – and the plan is to have four or eight boards in a race.

It’s billed as a “fun and fast competition format that’s great for the whole family”, and on shore there’ll be food and drinks for sale, prizes for the kids, a barbeque and music. Edith Symes *Registration, practice & demos from 9am at Kopua, $20 entry. Racing 11am-4pm.

Where did you grow up? Are you from a creative family?

In the old centre of Antwerp, Belgium. My Grandad was a tailor-painter who had his workshop on the river Schelde, making suits and uniforms for the sailors.

My mum was always sewing (when she couldn’t sleep she was up making clothes for my sis and me) Nobody taught me. When my mum was sewing, as a kid I was sitting on the table beside her chit chatting away.

I must have never forgotten what she was actually doing. It all got stuck into my brain somehow by watching.
