Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?

Two English teachers at Secondary School for their love and passion for the subject.

Best and worst thing about being an artist?

The best thing is the freedom to do what I like. The worst thing is getting people to understand the process, message and monetary value of art photography.

Few people can live off their personal art so I’m fortunate that the business I run (Palm Prints) with my partner Jane Galloway is still creative and our work is seen widely through greeting cards, calendars, and digital fine art prints. I also do some commercial photography assignments e.g. industrial, corporate, architecture, and editorial for magazines.

What would you be if you weren’t a photographer?

An archaeologist. When I was about fifteen I found it incredibly interesting when a section of the Antonine Roman Wall was excavated near our house in Glasgow. The wall was built in 142 AD to hold back the Caledonians, the indigenous people of Scotland.

Your best traveling experience?

Double international exposure beckons for young rugby whizz

A

quandary facing talented young Raglan rugby player Josef Meek – whether to gain overseas experience at 15-a-side or touch rugby – has been nicely solved. He’s going to do both.

For weeks the 1.69 metre-tall, 68 kilogram teen had been tossing up whether he should play for a Hamilton Boys High School under 16 team at a tournament in Australia come August or for the national under 17 touch team – again across the ditch – in September.

But then last Friday he also got selected for the Hamilton Boys High School team to go to a worlds 1st XV secondary schools tournament in Japan next month – and that means he can play offshore in both forms of the game after all.

While the 16-year-old has to forgo the August 15-a-side tournament, he told the Chronicle he was “pretty stoked” at the outcome, particularly as he was “kind of on the borderline” for selection in his high school team for Japan.

“We had the trials two weeks ago, then they named an extended squad and we had more trials before the announcement of the team,” said Joe, who plays halfback.

Joe, who’s into his fourth year at Boys High and is now a year 12 student, is part of a 28-strong playing squad which will fly out to Japan in the second week of the April school holidays. The squad, accompanied by managers and coaches, will be away for 18 days.

Hamilton Boys High 1st XVs have built up a fearsome reputation at both national and international levels and to represent the school at a world tournament is a big achievement.

With so much training to fit in morning and afternoon, Joe has gone boarding at the school this year rather than continuing to commute over the 'divvy' with his dad Chris. He has rugby training from 6 to 7.30 or 8 each weekday morning, then it’s back to the hostel for breakfast before classes start. It’s a similar story after school, with regular training from 3.30 to 5ish.

Joe said he was enjoying boarding.

“It’s real good, real fun.

“I wasn’t so familiar with things at first, but after a couple of days it was all sweet.”

Joe – who cut his teeth playing junior rugby for Raglan from about the age of 5 and had his first taste of touch rugby in a Waikato under 11s team – goes to the Gold

New Zealand is fielding a team in each age division, where they’ll be up against Australian state sides.

Illegal dumping at Te Uku proving hard to overcome

T

e Uku’s rural bins for rubbish and recycling are overflowing – and while it’s great to see the small community just 10 minutes east of Raglan using this facility, says Xtreme Zero Waste co-manager Rick Thorpe, a “small percentage” of people are still illegally dumping household items there.

An old washing machine appeared last Monday morning, concerned resident Jacquiline Kay told the Chronicle. Other days she’s seen old TVs, car parts, furniture, black rubbish bags, unsorted recycling, fish offal and broken glass.

“Every week I stop by and talk to the workers cleaning up the mess … I feel for these guys,” she added.

It’s an ongoing problem, Rick confirms, and it comes in waves. “We talk to people and inform them and it improves for a while.”

But Xtreme’s twice-weekly pick-up from the area behind Te Uku Store is hardly keeping pace, he admits, despite a recent increase in “containment”. The capacity at Te Uku is now almost double that of nearby Te Mata’s rural bins which are noticeably neater.

Those bins however are in a very obvious place in front of the school

grounds, Rick reckons, whereas Te Uku’s are just off SH23 in Okete Road and less visible. “People from outside of Raglan are taking the opportunity to whip around the back of Te Uku and deposit their waste,” he believes.

In fact one Xtreme worker recently intercepted a woman from Te Pahu who had driven to Te Uku to dump a trailer-load of rubbish.

“We’ve tried better signage (on site) and do occasional articles, in the Chronicle and in school magazines,” says Rick of attempts to get the message through to that minority.

But a recently installed surveillance camera might be Xtreme’s best weapon yet. The first lens though was too small to pick up vehicles’ registration numbers, Rick explains, and while the second lens got a good image of the regos it didn’t have enough distance to show the actual activity which leads to prosecutions.

“The third lens is hopefully the right size.”

Meantime the camera’s captured other interesting images, says Rick, which show very different behaviours. Some people just drop their rubbish and recycling off in a willy-nilly way while others separate it into the appropriate bins.

Then there are “great, really amazing, cool, super-supportive” members of the

community who not only do the right thing with their own waste but pick up and sort the mess others have left.

Rick is hopeful that with perseverance Xtreme Zero Waste can get everyone to respect the system in place, dumping only recyclables and the blue pre-paid rubbish bags – available around the corner at Te Uku Store – not unsightly household items which take extra effort to shift.

Edith Symes Waikato District Council this week commended Xtreme Waste’s discouragement of illegal rubbish dumping.

“We have found consistently using a variety of enforcement awareness methods – for example warning letters, signage, general advertising – can be a deterrent for potential offenders and we certainly support any additional actions including the installation of cameras by Xtreme Waste.”

Council staff said their best opportunity to prosecute offenders is when they have physical evidence and an eyewitness, and asked for the community’s help in identifying anyone seen illegally dumping rubbish.

WDC advised residents to call 0800 492 452 and report offenders.

Young Kiwi bowler takes on Australia

Labour’s choice to contest seat suggests win a distant prospect

t has been a big week for Raglan bowler Ashleigh Jeffcoat who has just returned from her first international bowling stint in Melbourne as part of the NZ Junior Bowling Squad.

The trip caps off an amazing couple of seasons in the sport which has seen the 15 year old take out many top local and regional titles, gaining the attention of the New Zealand selectors in the process.

“It was great to go away with the NZ team because the Black Jacks were part of the squad and I got to watch them play and they watched us as well. Val Smith was my ‘buddy’ and after my first day, which was really tough she gave me some good advice.”

That advice was all about a memory Val had when she first played for New Zealand in a singles game and lost 21 – 1 to her Australian counterpart.

“She picked herself up on day two and came out and won her next match

21 – 16, so that’s what I tried to do.

Moral of the story is that when you’ve had a bad day you refocus again on playing the best you can and things just get better.”

One of the big differences Ashleigh discovered between playing here and in Australia is the pace of the green.

The Raglan green is ‘tuned’ to run at a comfortable and competitive speed of 16 to 17 seconds. In Australia the greens were considerably slower so the biggest challenge for the NZ contingent initially was to adjust the weight at which they delivered their bowls. Ashleigh says it took her until the last day of competition to really feel she had mastered the Australian speed.

For the aspiring young bowler, having the chance to watch how the world-class Black Jacks played their shots was a real highlight.

“I learnt so much watching how as a team they built up the bowls around the jack. Watching the masters play is an amazing experience.”

Cull Cows: Raglan Chronicle

on’t expect you’ll have any better odds of running into your local MP in the street in the highly unlikely event the Labour candidate were to win the Taranaki-King Country seat in September’s general election.

For years now Raglan’s been represented in Parliament by a National MP who – if the website nz.distancescalc.com is an accurate guide – lives 329kms, or a four hour and five minute drive away, near Opunake.

But the newly announced Labour candidate for what looks a sure bet to remain a safe National seat lives even further south, a 471km or five hour and 39 minute drive away at Otaki on the Kapiti Coast.

Penny Gaylor’s an Otaki ward district councillor hellbent on reviving the local Kapiti economy, restoring the area’s natural environment and fixing its youth problem, and it seems that from its choice of a rank outsider Labour gives itself no chance in TaranakiKing Country whoever replaces

retiring MP Shane Ardern.

Arden squeaked into the seat in a 1988 by-election forced by Jim Bolger’s appointment as New Zealand’s ambassador to the United States, but in the last three general elections has attracted roughly two out of every three votes cast as the electorate – in Wikipedia’s words – has “reverted to form”.

The Te Kiri (that’s near Opunake) farmer may have shown himself to be out of touch with Raglan’s depth of feeling on deep-sea oil drilling and sand mining but that’s of little political consequence because Raglan sits largely unnoticed on the northern frontier of a vast, mostly rural electorate. Final electoral boundaries to be published on April 17 aren’t expected to change things.

Labour put up a relatively high-profile rival in former Cabinet minister Rick Barker last time around, but he was consigned to political oblivion after taking the party backwards by picking up just 18.3 per cent of the TaranakiKing Country electorate vote.

Remarkably, Barker was outpolled

in the Raglan area by youthful Greens candidate Robert Moore, who picked up almost 28 percent of the 1486 votes cast locally.

Moore has now been reconfirmed as the party’s candidate and local interest will centre on whether the Greens are able to make further gains over Labour. The party’s profile locally has been helped along in recent times by a series of public meetings with visiting Green MPs as guest speakers. The latest only last Sunday when Kevin Hague outlined a “Greenprint for health” at the Raglan Bowling Club (see separate story below).

Meanwhile Ardern’s successor as National candidate should be revealed in only a week or so.

The party’s electorate chair, Harry Bayliss, told the Chronicle on Monday the electorate committee was midway through the process of selecting their replacement.

“We are holding a series of meet-the-candidates meetings throughout the electorate and delegates will make their final selection in early April,” he said.

Green MP talks health policy Green MP and former West Coast DHB CEO, Kevin Hague, had an audience of 13 at the Bowling Club last Sunday. His visit was part of his Green Party Health Tour, explaining Green policy.

Kevin drew attention to the vision of Michael Joseph Savage, first Labour Prime Minister and founder of the health service.

He said it was very similar to the Green aim of a fee-free, universal, prevention-based health service.

Kevin contrasted the government attitude to roads and health. Although traffic levels are falling, and now below 2001 levels, the government is spending $3,000m a year on new roads.

Aaron offering locals a taste of the treats in his new book

R

aglan’s MasterChef NZ winner Aaron Brunet will launch his long-anticipated cookbook nationally next week.

To celebrate he’s planned a Saturday afternoon event at the Old School Arts Centre for locals to come along and “taste a few things”.

All are welcome, the chef described by judge Simon Gault as a culinary “rock star” told the Chronicle. Aaron’s got in mind soup and the sourdough bread he loves to bake, followed by a sweet.

He will also sign copies of his book ‘Cook With Me’ which represents a year’s work, he says, and is on sale officially from Friday April 4.

Pink Fun Run and Walk well supported

fter my first attempt in and being asked by so many people if I would do it again… 2014 has seen another successful Pink Fun Run/Walk around the 3 Bridges in support of the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust. There were plenty of pink outfits, including pink wigs and fairy wings—even some four-legged competitors dressed up for the event!

With approximately 50 people participating in the Run/Walk, and so much delicious baking to sell on the day, we raised $790.00 for the Trust. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of those individuals and businesses that have offered their support to this event.

Feline Aids (FIV) - Is your cat at risk?

Caught through bite wounds in fighting cats, New Zealand has one of the highest rates of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) positive cats in the world.

FIV, or Feline AIDS, is a common feline retrovirus infecting New Zealand cats which leads to disease such as oral infections and cancer.

High risk animals would include tom cats, breeds that tend to fight and potentially all outdoor cats. In New Zealand infection rates vary, current research estimates 5-15% of New Zealand cats become infected with this life threatening disease.

Vaccination programme A vaccine, Fel-O-Vax FIV™, protects against Feline AIDS. We recommend vaccination for all at risk cats.

Prior to vaccination a simple and quick antibody test will be run in-clinic, for all cats older than 6 months, to ensure they are not already infected. Kittens may be vaccinated straightaway.

A course of 3 vaccinations spaced 2-4 weeks apart is necessary for full protection, followed by an annual booster, for continuing protection.

How is FIV diagnosed?

A simple, in-clinic test is used to diagnose FIV infection.

If the test is positive it is highly likely that your cat has been infected with FIV. Other cats in the household may already be infected with FIV but show no signs of illness, so all cats should be tested.

Generally, however, the spread of FIV between cats through social contact alone is very poor, so there is a good chance that the majority of other household cats may be uninfected.

Composting is an easy and free way to improve the soil condition of your gardens whilst recycling organic waste. It’s great for the environment as it is natural, reduces landfill and eliminates the need for chemicals. t was living Organic waste (so that’s anything tha nerally once) can be made into compost. Ge EEN we divide these into two categories: GR rich in and BROWN waste. GREEN waste is bon.

kitchen scraps, veges, fruit scraps, leaves, fresh grass clippings, coffee grounds, tea bags, hair, fur, animal manure, blood and bone, seaweed, fish bones, chopped weeds (without seeds!)

Composting Facts; CONTENT Everything organic has a ratio of Carbon: Nitrogen in its tissues. The ideal ratio for compost mibcrobes is 30:1, so try and balance 3-5 parts BROWN with 1 part GREEN SIZE AND SHAPE It’s important to have the right size heap.

Too big, and not enough air will reach the centre. Too small, and it might not get hot enough for microbial activity. Also, if the heap components are smaller, this will give a larger surface area for decomposers to work at, resulting in a speedier decay.

Compost Bin Basics: 1. Choose a site for your compost that’s warm and sheltered. Make sure you consider your neighbours!

2. Construct a bin or start a heap as close in size to 1m x 1m x 1m as possible.

3. Begin with a layer of twigs, leaves, sawdust or other coarse brown materials on bare soil 4. Add alternate layers of brown and green waste 5-10cm deep. (Check our posters for what you compost does and doesnt like!)

5. Cover your compost; perhaps use some old underfelt, a tarp of a plastic lid.

6. Add soil periodically and turn every 2-4 weeks.

AIR AND MOISTURE Extremes of sun and rain will upset the balance of moisture in your compost; so site your heap out of full sun, in reach of the hose and cover when the rain’s heavy! It should be as wet as a wrung out sponge. Remember to turn your heap so as to air the hot inside and rotate components.

TIME AND TEMPERATURE The hotter the heap, the faster your compost will be ready to use! It can even get as hot as to burn your hand! If it reaches 50-60°C it’ll also kill any diseases or weed seeds.

Hollie will be playing with a 4-piece band on this tour, bringing another dimension to her songs. She will be supported by local band, The Kryptonites, so get there early!

Saturday at the Yottie brings a fundraiser for KASM (Kiwis Against Sea bed Mining).
