Dear Editor, I am a mother and a reluctant activist. I never wanted to be a protester, but when you bring children into the world you have an obligation to fight for their rights and for their future. The Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), which is in the works right now, will erode our democratic process here in NZ and ruin the future of our children, so I have to stand up and speak out against it.

Ever since my children were little, I have taken them with me every time I voted. I feel powerful and proud when I vote. Democratic voting allows the voices of the common person to be heard. It allows the power of the people to shape the country and the direction it goes in.

A democratic government is supposed to be transparent and open and fully disclose its operations to its populace. TPPA is a back room deal done in secret. No one in the public knows all the details, except the 600 corporate lawyers across the globe that I hear are working on it. TPPA is a threat to our democratic rights and I am not going to sit idly by and let that happen without a fight.

I ask all the people in Raglan to stand up and take action against the TPPA and protect our democratic rights.

Dolphin Day has its own magic

t seemed like the karakia had an almost magical effect on the weather at Sunday’s Maui’s Dolphin Day in Raglan.

The annual event to raise awareness about the world’s smallest and rarest dolphin seemed doomed to bad weather, but then cleared after the karakia at the start of the day at Te Kopua domain.

“I’d like to think the karakia had something to do with it,” said Danielle Hart, a coordinator at the Whaingaroa Environment Centre, which had organised the event for more than 10 years.

It was an action-packed family day that was well supported by local families and visitors, with a serious educational and environmental side to it.

Music was a dominant feature of the event, kicked off by a samba band that got people up dancing, but the main focus on the stage was youth talent, Danielle said.

The high calibre of local young talent included kapahaka, dancers and a performance of the Maui’s Dolphin song by local schoolchildren.

Alongside fundraising stalls of local schools and organisations were many dolphin-themed activities for families to enjoy, such as decorating clay tiles with The Clay Shed and designing flags.

The Maui Survival Challenge obstacle course proved popular. Participants had to negotiate through threats to the dolphin, such as nets and fishing in polluted waters.

Those that made it to the end were rewarded with a photograph of themselves with the life-sized Maui’s dolphin the Department of Conservation (DOC) had brought.

“It was a fun way to get across the seriousness of the Maui’s situation,” Danielle said about the dolphin, which now numbered less than 55.

Messages from the public about the dolphins’ plight were also sent to Minister of Conservation Maggie Barry and Simon Bridges, Minister of Primary Industries, who was allowing mining within the Maui’s habitat along the North Island west

Always a highlight of the day, Xtreme Zero Waste’s recycled raft race was no disappointment this year, with the help of a local safety team made up of the Raglan Coastguard, Sailing Club, Surf Life-Saving Club and Raglan Kayaks.

The clear winner was the “Maui Flyer” raft, which just managed to fit its propellers

under the bridge at high tide to finish well ahead of the other 22 rafts that lined up at the start of the race.

Xtreme communications specialist Bexie Towle said DOC also entered a raft in the race, piloted by members of their Waikato management team and head office.

Bexie said the DOC staff were really impressed with how the whole day was

run, and “the community cheer” that was given for Maui’s dolphins and for recycling.

Recycling was a big feature of Maui’s Dolphin Day, with stallholders using compostable containers and cutlery for food, and the public encouraged to make use of the recycling bins on site.

And at the end of the day, children and some of the 50-odd volunteers involved in the event did a cleanup of the whole area, leaving the beach cleaner than it was at the start of the day.

Business outlook - a story Susan Trodden of maintained Chamber CEO confidence: The latest Chamber survey of business confidence in the Northern region tells a story of maintained confidence for business and a positive outlook for the next 3 months.

The general outlook for New Zealand was down slightly on last quarter but holding at a high level by historical standards.

Chamber CEO Susan Trodden suggests this could reflect sentiment created from lower than expected dairy pay outs but notes that this may be offset by lower food and fuel prices New Zealand was experiencing at the moment.

Of concern for any economy must be the fact that 34% of respondents to the survey suggested they were having difficulty finding the right people with the right skills – a constant for any growing economy.

The survey also reflected strong employment intentions and hours to be worked.

number of people have been arrested in Raglan for cultivating cannabis during a recent national drug and crime operation.

District Crime Services coordinator Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall said several locals had appeared in the Hamilton District Court charged with cultivating cannabis following the Waikato phase of the national police operation, known as Op Jasmine.

Police sprayed a large number of plants around the edge of the Raglan harbour and other areas of bush and scrub during the operation at the end of February, at a time when many cannabis growers were preparing to harvest their plants.

Over a two-week period, police recovered 6946 cannabis plants during a search of 57 properties across the Waikato, Mr Keall said.

Some dried cannabis was also recovered, as well as methamphetamine, LSD, Ecstasy and GBL/Fantasy.

A total of 16 firearms of various calibres were seized along with a variety of ammunition, $18,000 in cash and about $27,000 worth of stolen property including a digger.

A total of 30 arrests were made for a variety of offences.

Mr Keall said Raglan

was no worse than other areas around the Waikato.

However, police noted that a large percentage of the recovered cannabis plants were found on the Coromandel Peninsula, north of Whitianga.

“A lot of the recoveries were also made in traditional growing areas such as in farmers' maize crops or in parks and reserves and private forestry blocks."

Mr Keall said cannabis growers often used reserves or target farmers' crop paddocks to disguise their identities and innocent land owners were increasingly becoming victims of their activities.

While Raglan Police had not been directly involved in the local phase of Op Jasmine, they had passed on information from the local community, in particular, reports from rural people about suspicious activity on farmland or forestry blocks.

Mr Keall thanked members of the public for passing on this information to police.

"There is obviously a groundswell of support from rural landowners and recreational bush visitors for police to take action against such offenders because while we were out on our operations we were continually being approached by members of the public outlining where other illegal crops were."

Reiki misses out on X-Factor finals Raglan’s teenage hope in TV3’s talent show, X-Factor NZ, is determined to come back with a bang after missing out on being one of the 12 finalists.

In the third selection round, Reiki Ruawai, 15, was eliminated from the boys section by judge, UK singer Natalia Kills. Benny Tipene, the 2013 X-Factor NZ runnerup, helped with the selection process.

In the programme, which aired on Monday night, Reiki said he never expected to make it as far as he did.

Natalia commented that he was “very talented; knows a lot about music; beautiful to look at”, and later said she had high hopes for him.

However, like the other three judges, Natalia could only pick three of her six hopefuls to go through to the live final shows and Reiki was not chosen.

“It’s pretty hard,” Reiki said afterwards. “I’m just going to work hard, do what I do and just come back with a bang.”

The episode, in which Reiki wears a top from Raglan-based clothing label Bad Things, was filmed at a luxurious west Auckland mansion overlooking Manakau Harbour.

New Zealand Herald entertainment writer Lydia Jenkins revealed that no-one on the programme actually stayed at the clifftop mansion. “.. the young guys who have made it this far, and are now in Natalia Kills' team, are actually still staying at the SkyCity Hotel in town, and Kills and guest mentor Benny Tipene are also simply coming out to the house to film their segments,” she said in a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the filming of the episode.

Waikato District Council issuing fire permit again Waikato District Council will be issuing fire permits, but only on a case by case basis.

“If it wasn’t for the Deviation, a series of rolling hills and hair pin bends, I reckon the population of Raglan would be closer to 10,000 than the 3000 residents who occupy this Waikato West Coast surfing mecca.”

So says Kiwi writer and photographer Steve Hale in a five-page article on Raglan in the latest issue of NZTODAY, touted as New Zealand’s top selling domestic travel publication.

During a brief visit to the town Steve whipped around most of the sights, starting with the Bridal Veil Falls – which he said were “a mandatory excursion” - and finishing with the Raglan wharf.

Steve and his family spent two enjoyable nights at the Raglan Kopua Holiday Park, and was enthusiastic about the whole domain area, including the playgrounds, BMX track and fitness course.

“It was great to see families and people of all ages enjoying the facilities and communal outdoor space. The best things in New Zealand have always been, and still are I’m proud to say....

Sea conditions for fishing have been perfect day after day. There are mahimahi and tuna from 30m, plus many bait fish workups and fat gannets just sitting on the water. Bait fish are literally everywhere you go, saury to small whitebait. The kahawai are full of them.

Sea temperatures are still close to 23 degrees. Plenty of kingfish around this year. 21 and 23 and other rocky knolls are well populated with rat kings with the bigger ones below ready to be jigged.

We are still plagued when bottom fishing in the shallows by rat kings taking cut baits and chasing up every fish we catch. There are plenty of snapper, gurnard, kahawai and trevally to be taken.

Our limit is usually caught within two hours, and the bin full because of the kahawai size and numbers. Plus more bait caught for the next few fishing trips - those slimy mackerel coming in two at a time. “Cutting fish takes longer than catching fish.”

Snapper are still on biscuits up North in the shallows, plus a few with worm dirt and baby flounder in their guts.

Crayfish in numbers are still on the reefs.

The marlin were late arriving, but basically every day there are reports of hook ups or fish to be weighed.

They are in close to out wide.

Spot a Maui Dolphin around Raglan With less than 55 Maui dolphins left every sighting helps us protect them.

There are now less than 20 breeding females.

The Whaingaroa Environment Centre has hidden 20 female Maui Dolphins around Raglan town in the CBD. The dolphins will be hiding in local shops and sneaky spots, each one has a word written on. Keep an eye out for the rounded fins of our smallest marine mammals and if you see one write down the word on the dolphin. Pick up an entry form from the Whaingaroa Environment Centre or the Information Centre.

Even the harbour has seen some day’s real big workups of bait fish. And with them close to a hundred terns and gulls working them, along with kahawai and big kingfish.

There are plenty of flounder and mullet around at present. Plenty of lights out spearing flounder in our Bays as our evenings has been so calm.

A tip for washing fishing clothes. Always wash in ample cold water. Warm hot water cooks the smell into the clothes.

Simrad: All the signs are up for the Waikato Sports Fishing Club Simrad One Base. March 19,20,21st at the Raglan Club Inc Bow Street. Registrations are from 5.00pm on the 18th with the Tournament briefing at 7.00pm. New moon is that Friday 20th, great as the fish will be on the bite. Large tides to 3.7m over those days.

Smokem Raglan returns on Easter Sunday 5th April at the Raglan Club Inc. Our annual smoked fish competition. Free to enter, smoked fish to be judged is submitted between 4.00pm and 5.30pm.

Judging commences at 6.00pm. $500.00 in prizes and trophies to be won, with fish tasting afterwards.

fter almost a year of fundraising, the Raglan Ocean Trails Mountain Bike Park Project is due to kick off early in April 2015.

The $56,000 project driven by the Raglan Mountain Bike Club will initially create 4km of family friendly cycling trails with the potential of extending the network to 10km of biking fun. These trails will become a major asset for Raglan and hopefully inspire people of all ages to take up cycling/ mountain biking and encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The Raglan Mountain Bike Club has received grants and donations to help them finance this project but is just $5,000 short of achieving the project fund total.

So the RMB Club is calling out the community to support a fundraising event at Rockit on the 28th March to help overcome this last hurdle or even exceed the required amount as more funding means more trails.

To help protect these birds, project partners will cut up to 40 km of new tracks and deploy up to 500 stoat traps across the mountain.

“The project will continue to rely on volunteers to help with predator control on Karioi and we’ll keep working in partnership with local landowners to do predator control on private land around the mountain.”

Boaties lucky to have local tutor Everyone who owns and operates a boat is responsible for the safety of all on board. Whether you are new to boating or have had years of experience, you should consider enrolling on a Coastguard Boating Education course tutored by Viv Regnier.

Viv teaches the Day Skipper, Boatmaster and Maritime VHF/MROC Operator at the Raglan Coastguard. With numerous years of boating experience including Marine Search and Rescue, in addition to her background in primary and secondary school teaching, Viv is highly qualified to tutor these courses.

The Day Skipper course (a fifteen hour course) is an introductory course for all members of the family or crew and applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, jet skis, sea kayaks, and waka. Graduates of the Day Skipper course are eligible for NZQA level 2 unit standard credits. Viv is running two Day Skipper courses this year – one on the weekend of the 28/29th March, and one on the 15/16th August.

Viv tutors a 30 hour Boatmaster course from 7th May, and two VHF courses on the 18th of April and the 30th of May. The Boatmaster course is a comprehensive course for boaties

with some existing knowledge and experience.

M o d u l e s covered include navigation, compass, & chart work, rules of the road at sea, tides & weather and boat handling, and graduates  are eligible to be Viv Regnier awarded NZQA level 3 unit standard credits.

The maritime VHF radio allows you to communicate distress immediately, have continuous contact with search and rescue nationwide and to hear other boaties in distress. A Maritime VHF radio operator’s qualification is a legal requirement for all users of a maritime VHF radio. This qualification is also NZQA accredited.

GOD IS REAL! HERE’S MY STORY

I moved to Raglan just over 2 years ago. I got a job at CBM (Children's Bible Ministries), which is Camp Raglan at Whale Bay. I gave my heart to Jesus as a child at those camps. From age 8, I went to every camp during the school holidays.

I didn't have an easy childhood, as I was from a broken home, and I stuttered. Life was sometimes lonely, as I endured endless teasing as a child. My faith and love for the Lord is what gave me the strength to keep going, as I knew I was totally loved and accepted by Jesus.

Every camp, I learnt more and more about Jesus, and how He could help me in every situation I encountered.

Camp Raglan played a vital part in who I am today. They were always there

  me to talk to and encourage me, and love and guide me in my walk with the Lord.

As an adult, My love for Jesus is even stronger, and I can’t imagine doing life without Him. Life has given me some hard knocks, but Jesus is my Rock, my firm Foundation.

Its so special to be on staff at camp, to be able to give back a portion of what they invested in me as a child, and continue to do to even now. Watching kids come through camp and seeing their lives changed, as mine was, is such a great privilege.

Life would have been so different, had I not had a friend and Saviour Jesus Christ to do life with. Jesus IS real.
