We rely on these donations to provide the ambulance services in our community, and are very grateful to those who donate.

It is therefore very disappointing that one of our donation boxes which contained a great deal of money was stolen from the counter of one of the businesses over the holiday period.

This action has deprived the community of much needed funds to help us help others, and has upset the business owner.

If you have any information regarding this theft, please contact the local Police in confidence.

KASM To the Editor, As organisers of last weekend’s Maui’s Dolphin Day, we’d like to say more than a few thank yous! This was another amazing community event, showing how much Raglan cares about its community spirit and environment. Many locals and visitors were impressed when our emcee asked the kids what aluminium cans are made out of, and more than one kid said “Bauxite!” This event runs on lots and lots of bits of support, sponsorship and volunteering, as well as funding from our major funders: Sky City Hamilton and Raglan Community Board.

The 2014 Recycled Raft Race gets underway

A dramatic sinking and a close win added colour and hilarity to Xtreme Waste’s 11th annual recycled raft race, which last Sunday helped draw hundreds to Kopua domain for a day of fun and entertainment.

With a really big tide in the estuary and 20 craft lined up for an 11.15am start, the race – run again in tandem with Whaingaroa Environment Centre’s Maui’s Dolphin Day – was a “great success”, says Xtreme Waste co-manager Jacqui Forbes.

She reckons the fate of the corrugatediron catamaran of defending champion Piripi (Phil) Meek only added to the entertainment value. It may have sunk but Waka Blond, as it was called, won the Titanic Award at the end of the day and Piripi received an anchor for a trophy.

Meantime it was the Waitetuna Flyer – an ingenious pontoon-style boat made of two air-conditioning ducts joined by a recycled bed frame and with a paddle wheel made from the circular frames of an old water tank – which was pedalled and rowed to victory under a Kopua footbridge lined with spectators.

In the end there wasn’t much between the Waitetuna Flyer and Earthrace, which improved on its third of last year after abandoning paddle-power this time around in favour of pedal-power from its fourcyclist crew headed by celebrity seafarers Pete Bethune and Rob Hamill.

Earthrace in turn just headed Bamboozled, a recycled-materials kayak crewed by a dad and two six year olds.

Student with passion School gala draws generous crowd for the environment wins award

top university student with a passion for keeping waterways clean has won Waikato Regional Council’s prize for water science.

The prize for $500 of book vouchers was presented to 21-yearold Raglan local Amy Waters at last Thursday’s council meeting.

“Water quality is the big issue that we face going forward and we need science to underpin it,” said council chairperson, Paula Southgate, during the ceremony.

“It’s a nice part of council work to reward clever people who are doing wonderful things in our community and who will go on to share their

expertise,” Cr Southgate said.

The water sciences prize started in 1990 and is awarded to the top Bachelor of Science student enrolled in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Waikato.

Ms Waters majored in earth science and quickly realised she enjoyed hydrology, taking every paper in natural water that she could during her final two years of study.

“I like how it relates to daily life. We all drink water from the tap everyday and I want to help make sure it is clean and free of contaminants now and for generations to come,” she said.

Ms Waters graduates in April and then intends heading to Europe for a couple of years, before returning to the University of Waikato to do her Masters, with a focus on groundwater.

“I would eventually like to do some work in Africa to help with the provision of clean drinking water, but I’d rather go there with more knowledge,” she said.

Ms Waters, who attended Raglan Area School and became head girl in her final year, says her degree combined her love for both science and the outdoors.

Full house applauds Xtreme Waste doco There can’t be many communities around the country in which people will pay good money – and give up their Saturday night – to watch the premiere of a film that’s all about rubbish.

But the evolution of Xtreme Waste is, as fledgling film-maker Aaron Mooar puts it, a “real good story” and up to 100 locals packed the Raglan Union Church hall in Stewart Street to see his 48-minute doco tracing how what began with a small group of volunteers collecting the town’s paper and cardboard for free has become one of the most successful recycling operations in the country.

Entitled simply “Xtreme Waste – Community Organisation”, the film’s a sympathetic, heart-warming and at times funny account of the years it took for Xtreme Waste’s founders to be taken seriously by Waikato District Council – to the point of wearing suits to one meeting with officialdom to show they weren’t just a bunch of hippies – and to get a recycling contract offering some stability.

Five of Xtreme Waste’s six founders were in the audience on Saturday night and, with the venture having occupied so much of their lives since the late 1990s, it must have felt at times that they were watching old family movies.

But this was also a serious portrayal of a long fight to overcome various setbacks and council intransigence, with former chief executive Warwick Bennett, now according to the doco working for an Indonesian logging company, coming in for special mention along with one-time community board chairman Peter Storey.

Against that there’s praise for Richard Bax, a recently departed council general manager who was very supportive of Xtreme Waste’s initiatives.

Although most of those interviewed for the film are from Xtreme Waste – right down to two teenage rubbish truck crew whose colourful and enthusiastic comments bookend the production – Aaron talks too to the likes of Bax and the boss of an Auckland waste recycling organisation who was amazed that from humble beginnings Raglan had created such a successful operation.

At the end of the screening there was resounding applause and a lot of positive comment from the full house.

Several of the audience labelled the doco “inspiring”, while Raglan Community Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher congratulated Aaron on putting together “a very good film”.

Aaron, who’s manager of Raglan Community Radio, said he’d thought he had some space in his life to make the film but had ended up spending four years “hidden up in my attic” putting it together. “I just want to go and lie down now,” he confessed to laughter.

But he agreed with audience concerns to see the doco get out to a wider audience.

While he hopes to show it at an upcoming environmental film festival in Auckland, it was suggested Maori Television and schools could also be good mediums for getting the Xtreme Waste story known.

Meanwhile local residents can see the doco at the Old School Arts Centre at 8pm this Saturday, and there will be repeat screenings if there is sufficient interest. A trailer of the film can also be watched on xtremewastefilm.com. A.T.

Plenty of fun to be had at gala: Tana Clapham clearly stoked with the water slide

The biannual Te Uku Gala was an example of an event from a bygone era. Te Uku parents banded together to create a gala with a circus theme which drew in hundreds from the wider Raglan Community.

One of the chief organisers, Rachel Bidios, summed up the day. “It was such a great success in fundraising but more then that, it was a fantastic community day for the tamariki of not only our school but surrounding and visiting children, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Like the galas and fetes of yesteryear there was apple bobbing, gumboot throwing, candy floss and fairground rides. There was a market atmosphere with stalls of goods on offer as well as students offering their expertise such as henna tatoos and crazy hairdos to raise money for their school. There was a range of street food available and other novel activities on offer including plate smashing and riding high on a scissor lift to view the surrounding area.

The day finished with the arrival of the Raglan Fire service who generously pumped water down the water slide in the neigbouring

paddock for the kids to enjoy. ‘It was probably my favourite part of the day’ said Bidios “Our local volunteer fire fighters made it possible, the bigger kids went down with the little kids, the firemen let the children hold the hose, it was just lovely” The event has become a fixture on the Raglan events diary. The Te Uku School FRC will be aiming to create an even bigger and better Gala day for 2016 with loads of family fun to be had by all says Arnika Taranaki, another of the organisers.

“We have heaps of exciting plans up our sleeve so be sure to come along next time and join the Circus.”

Car takes dip in harbour

Unexpected morning dip: A female driver squeezed out of a door and squelched her muddy way to safety after this car ended up on its roof and partly submerged in

water in an accident on the western approach to the Raglan West oneway bridge last Friday morning.

Police said the driver, the sole occupant, lost control after swerving

to avoid something in the middle of the road and the car plunged four metres down a bank into Kopua estuary. The woman is understood to have suffered only minor injuries.

Raglan CBD set to see red

nown for her red lipstick and flamboyant personality, longtime local Angela Massey is excited to announce that she will soon be the new owner of design store, Husk.

“I’ve been a teacher for 30 years, on and off for about 22 years at Raglan Area School so this is a big life change for me – I’m reinventing myself,” says Angela on her decision to purchase the business.

Current owner of Husk, Katrina Denize has spent over four years at the little corner store and while the sale is somewhat reluctant, she will soon be focusing on being a full time mother to her twin boys.

“It was an amazing coincidence actually, the day that I am supposed to be taking over the shop is the day that her two boys turn four so there was a touch of fate,” adds Angela.

Busy with planning for the takeover, Angela has a few changes in store, while wanting to keep the core feel of the shop.

“I will be the sole New Zealand retailer for a number of jewellery lines including Tahitian black pearls and I’m in the process

of developing a big web presence. It will be a small shop but with a big heart!” said Angela.

In the last week or so, Angela has taken to Facebook with a competition to find a new name for Husk and she has been overwhelmed by the number of entries she received.

“I already had a name in mind but thought I would get some more input and I got around 300 entries! I was astounded by the response!”

Winners of her Facebook competition included Tarsh Lawrence, winning $150 worth of store credit; Sunny Yoshida winning $50 worth of store credit and Karyn Moon winning a $25 voucher.

Angela also has a huge red carpet event planned for the naming ceremony to be held this Friday at 7pm down Volcom Lane with the official opening and blessing ceremony planned for the following Friday 14th March and she hopes to see everybody there.

Mixed Classic fishing competition The weather gods shone on the Raglan Sport Fishing Club for the whole week of the annual Mixed Classic fishing competition. Something we can usually only dream of.

The fishery off Raglan is second to nothing in the world. We had two marlin tagged and released and hope some valuable information will come back from them over time. This tournament does not weigh sharks as the club promotes only the tag and release of this apex predator.

In total 11 sharks were tagged and over 30 yellow tail kingfish were also tagged.

The Raglan Sport Fishing Club promotes the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council’s tag and release programme by getting sponsorship to purchase our tags, and we provide 2 free tags to all members. This has the club with the highest tag & release ratio per member in the country. Something we are extremely proud of.

Paraglider crash lands near Ruapuke

At 12:30pm on Tuesday the Waikato based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to a paraglider crash near Ruapuke beach, south of Raglan.

A 31yr old Noumea woman was treated for a suspected spinal injury. She was flown to Waikato Hospital for further treatment.

Construction underway on Wainui Rd Exciting changes are also afoot on the opposite side of Wainui Rd as construction is well underway on the commercial site between Atamira and the Raglan Liquor Store. The Chronicle has fielded dozens of inquiries from locals and retailers alike regarding the development of the space.

There has been plenty of speculation with many suggesting a new café or food outlet is the most likely contender.

However the Chronicle has it on good authority that at this stage it is likely to be a new and dynamic ‘concept store’. We understand a portion of the commercial space may also be allocated to the sale of hot and cold drinks. No doubt all will be revealed once construction is complete.

In Brief: Submissions in on Council’s legal highs policy The number of submissions to Waikato District Council’s proposed psychoactive substances policy has been confirmed as 483.

Other preliminary findings revealed that the majority of submissions were received from Te Kauwhata with 185, followed by Ngaruawahia with 122 and Huntly with 77.

Raglan accounted for 45, while six came from Tuakau and five from Pokeno. The remaining 43 were classed as district wide.

More than half of the submissions were opposed to the policy with 307 recorded as against, 163 in support, eight as ‘don’t know’ and five didn’t state a position.

Of the 483 submitters, 79 have opted to present in support of their submission at a hearing.

Customer Support General Manager Sue Duignan thanked all the submitters for taking the time to put forward a submission.

Council staff will now summarise the submissions into key themes for each town and then reassess the proposed policy based on the matters raised in the submissions.

Hearings are expected to be held in early May 2014.

The Raglan Community Arts Council Scholarship is an annual award of $1000, created to encourage and assist students undertaking tertiary study in the arts. To be eligible for the award, you must be between the ages of 16-20, resident in the Whaingaroa region and either enrolled for future tertiary study or currently studying at tertiary level.

Last year, the scholarship was split equally between Indya Gibbs and Connor Bridson.

Indya is currently studying Performing Arts/ Dance at Whitireia in Wellington, while Connor is studying for a Bachelor of Creative Technologies at Media Design School in Auckland.

This is the fifth year the scholarship will be awarded. The award is made possible thanks to the generosity of those taking part in Raglan Arts Weekend.

Lorenzen Bay gets footpath upgrade

ood news for residents in Raglan’s Lorenzen Bay –the construction of a footpath link between Simon Road and Manukau Road has been given the green light.

Over recent months Raglan residents have asked Council to complete a section of footpath on Simon Road where a partial grass berm meant pedestrians were forced to walk on the road.

Waikato District Council General

Manager Service Delivery, Tim Harty, says Council acknowledges this is a major safety issue for pedestrians and has allocated $80,000 to construct the footpath link.

“This investment will not only improve the safety of our community but will significantly improve traffic and pedestrian links from Lorenzen Bay to the town centre.”

Details of the project timeline including the completion date are yet to be finalised but Mr Harty expects it will be completed before the end of this financial year.

Huge international lineup playing the YOT Club this weekend This Friday 7th March, International Reggae Legend YT (UK) is visiting Raglan on his Australasian tour for a rare night of sound system culture.

Raglan kiteboarder on winning streak Raglan local and Acupuncturist Olly Brunton has just returned home from a successful three week kiteboarding campaign, competing in the New Zealand Kiteboard freestyle National champs held in Christchurch, followed by the 2014 Kitestock event held in Western Australia.

Brunton, who is a former professional snowboarder, 3 time New Zealand halfpipe champ and Olympian at the 1998 Nagano winter Olympics is no stranger to competition, adding a 5th National title to his trophy collection, taking out the masters division of the freestyle competition held in the Brighton Estuary. The Kiteboard Nationals were a judged event consisting of a combination of technical wakeboard like aerials and huge jumps. Riders are scored on their technical difficulty and style and landing. Competing in both Open Mens and the Masters division, Olly opted out of the Open Mens after a 3rd round loss to concentrate on Masters Final.

five 7 minute heats to rejoin the winners competition of the open “The heats are so intense! 4 riders jostle inside a 100m square box to perform their runs, 5 heats more heats would have put my podium finish at risk in the Master’s division, so I ditched the Open event to save some steam.”

Olly was in Raglan for one day, but still managed to get a surf in at Manu Bay before heading out to Western Australia with his kiteboard sponsors Axis & Ozone Kites for the annual Kitestock event held in Port Dennison, 6 hours drive north of Perth. The event is more laid back than the NZ Nationals, with Kitesurfing in the waves being the focus.

“WA is insane, the wind is very consistent, turns on at 9am everyday and increases in strength throughout the day. The Aussies call it the ‘Freemantle Doctor’.

In Raglan we have the Chinese Dentist which usually comes on at 2.30pm during the summer”.

Between 200 and 300 riders attend from all over Australia for the four day event. Fresh from his Masters win, Olly carried his momentum through to take out the wave kitesurfing event for the

Olly Brunton in action Masters, 2nd in the Open mens freestyle behind PKRA competitor Simon Witchermann and also won the big air event. “I’m super stoked with how the last few weeks have gone competitively, especially in WA. Most of my heats were against guys half my age. Raglan lifestyle of surf, kite and SUP on a daily basis is awesome training. Pumped to be back despite being a great few weeks, missed the wife and kids, and happy to get the clinic doors open again!”

What started out as a social experiment, after an article in the Raglan Chronicle in 2009 which challenged the Raglan community to do something to stop $12 million a year leaching out of Raglan in interest payments to banks, has led to the celebration of 4 years of success for a local “savings pool”.

13 relative strangers came together with the aim of cutting the drain of money out of the local economy through interest free money exchanges. They were guided by the Living Economies

Movement http://www.le.org.nz/ savings-pools. A savings pool was created which allowed the group to deposit money into a shared account and withdraw money as needed for various purchases or projects. Unlike a loan from a finance company or bank, the loan incurs no penalties or interest payments. Members utilising the funds commit to a programme of payments plus concurrent savings so that, at the completion of their payment programme, they have a lump sum of savings. This not only transforms debtors to savers, but also allows the pool to grow rapidly. Thus in its first four years the savings pool, which started by

helping a member buy tools of his trade, moved on to pay off credit card debts, and has now allowed someone to pay off her mortgage.

Four years on and excited at the success of their achievements, the “savings pool’ is holding an information sharing evening to inspire others to experience the benefits. Already there are 5 new people keen to start up a duplicate version of the appropriate finance system under the guidance of the current savings pool and there’s room for more to join! Area Fishing Report: by the Raglan Wharf Seagull

Yep, fishing of late has been pretty good along our coast.

Very good sea conditions, great temperatures with plenty of life in the sea. Plankton in masses flowing along under our boat, work ups of bait fish with larger fish ripping through the shoals and sea birds working overhead. We had two days of pulling in snapper and gurnard, chased by rat kings. Even when we stopped fishing the kingfish were swirling in the water at the back of the boat.

Another boat had a similar day except the fish were john dory, and as they had no livies or soft bait to catch them, they were around the boat until they shifted. Snapper are in close, 10m depth, same as other years, feeding up big time on sea biscuits. Their guts are full of them. They’re not big fish in size, but all over 40cm, and it takes only a short time to get your limit. Gurnard, large

kahawai, trevally are also in the mix. Sharp hooks and cut baits are all you need. Returning to Raglan we do a loop out to the 50m mark and troll for albacore and bonito and have proved to be successful with good fish weighed. A lot of fun fishing was had by all, which we have waited some time for. Flounder and mullet still abound up the harbour, particularly after the big tide ranges and if we get more westerlies, we will be back up there netting. I guess we at times have too many fishing options in this Raglan area. We visited the gannet colony at Muriwai beach recently, well worth a visit with hundreds of gannets there. We saw a few young chicks that were still fluffy but most chicks were black, exercising their wings and ready to go. Another month and all will be gone.

Walk round the mountain for the mountain We all recognise stress in our own gardens and there are ways to deal with it.

Every garden is different. Raised beds are very difficult to keep moist and cool at present, particularly if they have dark coloured heat absorbing sides. Those who have mulched/ composted would have greatly assisted garden plant life. Fruit and citrus trees need the dribbling hose overnight, feijoa fruit are dropping mainly because of the dry soil.

But we are harvesting so much, tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums, lettuce, spinach, silver beet, beans, peas, and many can be preserved, pickled or frozen. Freeze some surplus herbs like basil, adding olive oil to hold the colour. Harvest kumara in a dry spell, wrap average size ones in newspaper and keep in a dark, dry cupboard.

Whilst we have good warmth, many seedlings can be started for planting out later, or just drilled into soil and thinned when germinated leeks, parsnips, carrots, lettuce, all brassicas and silver beet. Flowers are the same, violas, stocks, pansies, polyanthus, lobelias, carnations and sweet peas, really just what you like for early winter flowers. It’s spring bulb time too. So, split up existing spring bulb beds to enlarge them, or to add new stock. Don’t plant these bulbs too deep, just below the surface is enough.

Manure everything now, roses, citrus (blood and bone or sheep pellets), fruit trees, lawns. If digging the gardens in with weeds and compost

add a good dressing of lime. It is your soil sweetener and is cheap to buy.

Remove potato and tomato tops off site.

Save all seeds, in paper envelopes (not plastic) and label them - tomato, beans, sunflower, cucumber, lettuce, sweet peas, peas, lavenders all for next season. Stem and root cuttings can be taken now from most bushes - roses, plums, berries - and started in moist potting mix with a bit of help from a rooting compound for the stem cuts.

I prune early, particularly plums, and other fruit trees a month after fruit has been taken but later for roses. Citrus is hedge cut for shape and reducing fast new growth.

Autumn is fruit tree planting time.

March is a Black Moon month.

We have a new moon on the 1st and the 31st. Black moon is a special time for rituals, spells and magic in various places around the world. Full moon is on the 17th. Plant seedlings from the 6th to the 15th do not prune during that period. Prune 22nd to the 28th March.

This year we are raising funds for the continuing protection of Mount Karioi - both the eradication of pests and reintroduction of bird species back onto the mountain.

Kiwi are planned for introduction in 2030, thats only 16 years away. What a fantastic goal.

We are starting the walk on the 5th April at 6.30am at the Raglan golf club on Te Hutewai road. We are walking anti clockwise round the mountain, to finish back at the golf club.

A great way to get fit, great achievement, something to cross off the bucket list, even I did it last year. We raised $11,500 for a

little girl who was being treated for cancer. She has made a wonderful recovery.

KASM: First seabed mining hearing Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) applied in October to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for Marine Consent to mine the seabed for ironsand in a 65 square kilometre area in South Taranaki off of Patea.

The hearing for this first application under the brand new Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Act is due to start next Monday, 10th March in Wellington and is expected to last 2 months.

The EPA received some 4700 submissions and only eight of those submitters fully supported TTR’s application showing overwhelming public opposition to the proposal.

As many will be aware the entire west coast of the north island from Whanganui to Cape Reinga is under either a prospecting or exploration permit, covering over 20,000 square kilometres, for iron sand mining from the seabed including the coast off Raglan.

There are several companies who hold these permits.

Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) has been following TTR every step of the way, informing coastal communities of the proposals, challenging TTR to ‘play fair’ as they progress through the consenting process and checking that the scientific and economic arguments supporting TTR’s plans stack up.

KASM sees this application as highly important, not only for the marine environment and coastal communities of South Taranaki but for the rest of the coast as well. This is the first application for the activity of seabed mining and it will set a precedent and give other permit holders an indication on whether they should invest in progressing their permitted blocks to the mining stage.

Early in February one large area running from the Awakino River mouth to Kawhia Harbour progressed from prospecting to exploration and TTR said that sample drills could begin as early as next week. To KASM this indicates TTR’s broader intention for the coast and highlights the need to

KASM has lodged a substantial submission with the EPA and is preparing to play a significant role in the hearing process. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FRIDAY 7 MARCH 2014

World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement for informed prayer and prayerful action. For over 80 years services have been held around the world on the first Friday of March. Overall it is administered by an International Committee in New York; in New Zealand a national committee is based in Christchurch. (Check it out at www. worlddayofprayer.co.nz) Each year the celebration comes from a different country: the theme is chosen and the service prepared by the woman of that country’s World Day of Prayer committee.

This year’s service comes from Egypt and has the theme, ‘Streams in the Desert’.

In New Zealand there will be around 250 services organized by local interdenominational groups. You are warmly invited to the Raglan service at 10am, Fri 7th March at Vision Church, 7 Taipari Ave, Raglan West.

Raglan Coastguard and Surf Lifesaving helped with safety and on-the-water support. Maori Wardens did a great job with the traffic management. Peggy Oki coordinated the aerial photo AND emceed the raft race and prizegiving. Melissa McMahon, Di Jennings and Kelly Clarkson ran an awesome Project Maui Fashion Show. Paul Murray was our fabulous emcee. WEC volunteers: Gillian, Meredith, Liz, Rhonda, and Val contributed time to running the Environment Centre tent. Mark Hornby, Sam Gray and Grace Brady helped with everything! Rick Thorpe helped as our safety officer. Merren Tait, Louie Galloway, Amy Taylor, Marta and Nicole Hancock helped with the day. Anna Cunningham was our lovely stage fairy. Nathan Rushton and Howard Towle judged the Raft Race, while Lisa Thompson and Mary Jane Towle had a big job coordinating prizes.

Felix Modregal always comes through as our amazing sound guy, and Tractor FM provide the sound system. Our performers: Twisted Timber, The Smokehouse Band, DJ Dubsonic, Raglan Area School, Whaingaroa Youth Movement, and Jess Fitzgerald all donated their time on stage. Jo Gibbs, Lynne Rogers and Sheree West-Hayward ran the raft race registration. Sean Ellison and Eva Waitere did our karakia. And there are so many more but we’re still recovering and it’s all a bit of a blur so big thanks to you all!!
