O

n October 2, the Raglan Arts Weekend will kick off at the opening of the Preview Exhibition - the biggest yet to date - at the Raglan Arts Centre.

96 artworks from the representative 48 studios will be on display and for sale, giving visitors a sneak peek into what’s in store for the self-guided art trail in October.

Each of the 48 participating studios on the trail has to submit two artworks – a showcase piece at any price point, as well as a donated 300mm x 300mm artwork to be sold for a steal at $200.

“16 years of RAW in - and our 300x300 exhibition is still the most popular part of our event!” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW’s Co-Ordinator. “It’s fascinating to see what each artist creates in a restricted square format, and our locals love it that they can buy a desired artwork at a fraction of its value.

Not only is it getting local artworks into more homes around Raglan, it’s also raising much needed funds to run the event.”

RAW is a not-for-profit event by the Raglan Arts Centre and all money raised from the 300x300 sale goes straight back into the event. The team has had a tough time this year raising funds with four grants declined, signalling the lack of sufficient funds in the arts for an

increasing number of applications. So far the opening launch event at Iso has been cancelled, along with a planned Children's Exhibition. Improvements to social media, the event's photography, web site improvements and digital marketing have all been sadly shelved due to a lack of funds.

One organization who has stood

by RAW since 2020 is the prestigious Chartwell Trust, whose partnership enables the Preview Exhibition, amongst other initiatives, to run every year. The Chartwell Trust was set up in 1970 to promote creative visual thinking and support contemporary art and the Chartwell Collection houses more than 2000 contemporary artworks from New Zealand, Australia and other countries at the Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmaki.

“It’s an honour to have their partnership and support and we are working together on bringing some great installations to RAW when we can raise sufficient funds to expand the event again,” says Nicky.

The organisers hope that the buzz from the Preview Exhibition will set the scene for RAW this year, which is becoming more engaging for its visitors with installations, demos, workshops and a partnership with the Raglan Country and Blues Music Festival. “We are moving in the right direction and we have so many ideas and opportunities,” says Nicky. “However, we need to

ensure that with these limited funds, our core event – the self-guided trail remains at the front and centre of RAW.” RAW’s Preview Exhibition is a free event. Following an exclusive opening for artists and friends on Thursday evening, it will be open to the public from Friday 2nd October until the end of RAW, Monday 26th October from 10am until 2pm. Over the RAW weekend, the exhibition will remain open until 5pm, along with other studios.

RAW is over Labour Weekend, 24th to 26th October, and artist studios will be open 10am until 5pm over the three days.

E

very morning in October, Whāingaroa Raglan’s steepest track will turn into a catwalk with a cause. Dressed in the brightest, funkiest frocks, Esther Keown and Ciaran Lannon will hike Karioi to raise money – and much needed awareness – for ovarian cancer.

Part of the national Frocktober campaign, the fashion-forward pair’s climb is one of many quirky fundraisers happening around the country to back the Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

“People can come for the walk or get involved but basically we just want to raise awareness and money,” Esther says.

The pair first connected behind the counter at Raglan Roast earlier this year. Chatting between coffees, they discovered they had both previously taken part in a ‘Show Up’ fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

Their shared experiences turned into a shared mission to take on the maunga and tackle some of the biggest misconceptions surrounding ovarian cancer.

Esther was diagnosed last year with a rare form of stage one ovarian cancer after seeing her GP at the Raglan Medical Centre with what seemed like common issues experienced by women – abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort that could easily have been written off as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or bad periods.

“Because my GP pushed for an ultrasound, we caught it early, and now I want every woman to know the signs and keep insisting on answers,” she says.

For Ciaran, the cause is deeply personal. He lost his mum to stage four ovarian cancer in late 2023, after nearly two years of treatment that included aggressive chemotherapy and major surgery.

“Mum went to the doctor at the end of 2021 because she was feeling burnt out and experiencing indigestion,” he says. “Our family had never heard of ovarian cancer, so we had no idea what we were facing. We were all around her, supporting her how we could in her final months.”

It didn’t take much to convince Ciaran to join Esther in her Frocktober Karioi challenge. “I always think about how resilient and strong Mum was during the whole process, which is a huge motivation for me to join Esther.”

“I honestly didn’t even know the Ovarian Cancer Foundation existed, so I’m an example of how that needs to change,” she says.

Her experience has also reinforced the importance of knowing the symptoms and acting on them.

Symptoms can include bloating, eating less and feeling fuller, abdominal, pelvic or back pain, needing to pee more often, tiredness, indigestion, changes in bowel habits, and abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge.

Unlike cervical cancer, which has a regular screening programme, there is no routine screening test for ovarian cancer. Instead, women are generally diagnosed after presenting to their GP with symptoms, with one in two Kiwi women receiving their diagnosis in an emergency department.

“Quite often it gets dismissed for other things without doing proper investigation,” Esther says. “Once women know the signs and symptoms, they can really advocate for themselves – if one GP brushes it off, go to another and keep pushing.”

The Ovarian Cancer Foundation recommends visiting your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms for longer than four weeks.

F

or the past 12 years, Dave Williams has called Raglan home.

An educator by trade, Dave began his career in secondary education before transitioning into tertiary teaching, where he now lectures in the Bachelor of Sport Science programme at Wintec. During a sabbatical, he also served as Head of Physical Education at Raglan Area School for a year before heading back to Wintec again, which allows him a little more flexibility to be present with his young family during these precious early years.

Beyond the classroom Dave is also an accomplished extreme adventurer and high-altitude mountaineer, taking on some of the world’s most demanding challenges.

In 2013, Dave set himself the extraordinary goal of becoming the first person to climb the highest peak

on each of the seven continents at pace, completing each journey from sea level to summit. Known as the Seven Summits challenge, this involves climbing the highest mountain on each continent and in doing so pushing the limits of endurance, resilience and mental strength.

So far, Dave has successfully completed four of the seven climbs across Africa, Europe, South America and Australia, with three peaks still remaining – including the ultimate challenge of Mount Everest.

The next stage of his journey will be one of his greatest tests yet, with the Everest expedition expected to involve running the equivalent of 32 marathons before beginning almost 60 days of climbing in one of the world’s harshest environments.

At times during his Seven Summits journey, Dave has pushed his body and mind to extraordinary limits, including running the equivalent of 10 marathons in nine days before beginning demanding mountain ascents. For Dave, his mental health is at an all time high when on these adventures because he has a strong purpose and drive. Of course there are hard days and low days in the mix but the epic days can only be described as a runners high. That cocktail of pride, euphoria and vulnerability is what it is all about. The biggest struggle is actually navigating post-expedition blues, coming back home to everyday life and routine after such emotional extremes and adventure. For this reason Dave considers allowing some decompression time after such missions as key to being able to adjust back into everyday life well.

But for Dave, the mountains are about much more than personal achievement.

Every kilometre travelled, every mountain climbed and every challenge overcome is connected to a bigger purpose: creating conversations, reducing stigma and helping people understand that they do not have to face their own struggles alone.

In 2013, Dave lost two close friends to depression. Their deaths inspired him to use his adventures as a platform to

raise awareness of men’s mental health and support people experiencing mental health struggles.

Dave’s mission is to raise $100,000 for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, helping support the vital work of providing education, resources and support for people across Aotearoa.

Currently this Sea to Summit mission is on hold as Dave and his wife grow their young family. Dave has also embarked on the challenge of completing his Doctorate, to promote how students can display their intelligence more practically in assessments, to better prepare them for life after study, and to help combat AI saturated assignments. Once Dave’s youngest child heads off to school, and his current study is complete, he will cast his eyes back towards adventuring, as it requires a guilt free 100% commitment.

of their appearance, ethnicity, or behaviour. It's about giving them a space to share their story and be photographed exactly as they are, so every woman involved feels empowered to embrace what makes her unique. I want to raise awareness around bullying, both in real life and online.

What inspired you to start the project?

F

or the past seven years, Raglan photographer Nami Hampe has captured more than 1,000 women through her lens. With her new non-profit photography project “Bullied to Beautiful,” Nami is giving women who have experienced bullying a space to reclaim their narratives.

Annika caught up with Nami ahead of the photoshoot on 12 September to find out what inspired the project, and how the local community can get involved.

What is your new project “Bullied to Beautiful” all about?

“Bullied to Beautiful” is a creative photography project featuring women who were, or still are, bullied because

Honestly? This idea didn't come from me sitting down and strategizing it. It came to me late one night, in prayer. I connect with God every evening, and this project just arrived, I felt like it was handed to me rather than built by me. It might sound a bit strange and I feel quite vulnerable to speak this out loud, but I've learned not to question those moments. So, I just said yes and let it unfold from there.

You've already spoken to 16 women.

What have you learned from hearing their stories?

How much these women carry quietly. Every story is different, but there's a common thread: so many of them spent years thinking they were the only ones who felt this way. Hearing them speak it out loud, sometimes for the first time, has been one of the most humbling parts of this whole process. It had me in tears more than once…

Can you share one story that stuck with you?

There's no single story, because all 16 have stayed with me in different ways. One woman was bullied in the navy for being a woman, for being pretty, for having a big heart that loved everyone too openly. One woman has been called a terrorist since she was seven years old, simply for being visibly Muslim. As a child, she was told she couldn't be a princess in a face-painting game because she was brown. Another told me her own mother picked apart everything about her: her skin, her voice, her laugh, her hair, even her feet…

Every one of these women carried something heavy for years, sometimes decades, and still showed up to share it with me. I don't take that lightly.

What does "reclaiming your story" mean to you?

For so long, the story a bully wrote about you is the one you carry; that you're too much, not enough, somehow wrong. Reclaiming it means deciding you're the one who gets to tell it now.

That's what I hope this project gives these women: a moment where the story finally moves, from something they've been hiding, into something they're owning. That's where the healing actually starts.

What can the women expect from the photoshoot on12 September?

The whole day is completely soulled. I don't have a rigid plan; I'm

trusting it to unfold naturally. We'll be at the beach in Raglan, and each woman will be photographed in her own way, in whatever she chooses to wear, whether that's her favourite outfit or something culturally significant to her.

How can locals get involved?

I'd love for anyone in the Raglan community who wants to support the project to reach out. That could be a videographer wanting to be part of the day, a local florist wanting to provide flowers for the women, any local businesses wanting to give these vulnerable and brave women a little gift or token, or someone wanting to bring down some snacks or refreshments for everyone. This project is completely non-profit, but anyone wanting to contribute in any way is so welcome to.

What do you hope people in Raglan take away from the project?

That bullying doesn't always look like what we expect, and it doesn't stop at childhood. I hope people walk away with more compassion, and I hope the women themselves walk away feeling like their story mattered to someone.

I hope it reminds us all, to choose our words with kindness. We never truly know what someone might carry from something we say. Embracing differences starts in community. It's about looking after each other.

Yes sometimes! We do a locals discount and we’re always very happy to have local people come and have a ‘staycation’ in Raglan. We also offer gift vouchers, so we get a lot of people buying these for Christmas, wedding presents, and birthdays. We are happy for locals discounts on these too.

What have your guests taught you about Raglan — or about what people are really looking for when they escape to a place like this?

et among peaceful countryside just minutes from Raglan, Three Streams Retreat gives guests room to unwind while remaining close to everything the town has to offer. The Local Rag caught up with Lucy Bourke to hear about the experience.

How many years have you been running Three Streams and how has it developed over time?

Callum and I started developing the accommodation side of Three Streams not long after we moved to this property in 2017. We started by converting our old stables into The Studio, and a couple of years later we added Blackwood Cabin.

What inspired you to create a boutique accommodation business in Raglan, and

Growing up we always had guests on our farm, hosting farm homestays, and luncheons for passing tourist buses, so it seemed like a familiar way to make living here work for us. We are also very fortunate to have a property that lends itself to a boutique accommodation business with beautiful natural features, close proximity to town, while still having the space and privacy for our guests to truly unwind (and enjoy everything that Raglan has to offer).

Getting everything set up and running well takes time, but over the years with technology and management platforms, we have streamlined the booking and arrival process. For several years, I worked from home as a consultant and did as much of the cleaning as possible myself, but recently I have stepped back into the teaching world, so I have less time. The key has been having the most fabulous cleaner. Tracy Brechelt has been here from the start and knowing I have a 150% reliable person who will do want needs doing, means I am able to head over the hill to work.

Is running an accommodation business all-consuming for you? — what does a typical day look like, and over the years how have you made it manageable?

What are some of the little details or experiences you’ve introduced that you hope make a stay with you feel genuinely special?

People absolutely love Raglan. It’s always a favourite place for tourists and people escaping the city. It reminds us how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country with such fantastic community of people. We feel blessed to be able to raise our children here and call this place home.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the accommodation business?

From the regular feedback we receive, our guests love staying at Three Streams Retreat and we are so grateful that they chose to stay with us. Making sure our guests have a memorable, enjoyable experience is paramount and we hope to continue providing this service for many years to come!

Can you talk us through your general performance in comps to qualify for the event?

O

ne of Whāingaroa’s rising young surfers, Van Camenzind, is taking the skills developed on Raglan’s waves to the international stage as part of the New Zealand Junior Surfing Team. Before the team left for El Salvador, we spoke to Van about the opportunity to compete against the world’s best junior surfers.

How does it feel to be selected for the New Zealand Junior Surfing Team heading to El Salvador?

It feels pretty unreal. I’m so stoked to be selected to represent New Zealand. It’s something I’ve

I’ve had a pretty good run in comps this year which lead me to qualifying for the team. I’ve been focusing on being consistent, making good decisions in my heats and putting together good scores. always wanted to achieve for a while, so it’s cool to finally get the opportunity to go and compete against the best junior surfers from all around the world.

By the time this goes to print you will have left. What was the preparation process like before getting away?

There was quite a lot to prepare before the trip, from training to getting my boards and gear ready and also fundraising to help with the cost. I’ve also been putting a lot of time into my surfing and training with Johnny down at the Refinery to make sure I’m as prepared as I can be for when I get over there.

What is your school situation and how has this helped your surfing progress?

I’ve been at Raglan Area School and have been involved in the Surf Academy. Being able to combine school with surfing has been a massive help because I’m around surfing and training a lot more.

When did you start surfing and who supported you?

How has growing up surfing in Whaingaroa influenced your ability?

Growing up in Whaingaroa has been awesome for my surfing.

There are so many different waves around Raglan, so you learn to adapt pretty quickly. Surfing Manu Bay and the other local breaks regularly has given me a good understanding of the ocean and helped me become more confident in the water.

What is your dream surfing holiday?

Either a boat trip to the Mentawais with the boys, or a trip around Indonesia.

What is your goal for the event?

My main goal is to surf to the best of my ability and enjoy the experience of representing my country. I also want to put myself in a position to get good results and hopefully go as far as I can in the event.

Can you tell us about your creative process? Where does an idea usually begin for you?

My creative process often begins with a photograph of an area that inspires me – the beach, ocean, clouds or trees. I block in the basic feeling of the image and then let the work take on a life of its own. You have to listen to your artwork. The hardest part is knowing when it’s finished.

How did your journey as an artist begin?

I grew up on a sheep farm and my parents always encouraged my art.

I have been painting and exhibiting since the 1970’s. I majored in art while training as a teacher. I left teaching to spend the rest of my working life in the screen printing industry.

What inspires your work?

I have a daily drawing practice. walking the beach and tracks around Raglan with my backpack. I find this inspires my work. It also refines my drawing skills. We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful environment. I also I get inspired by old buildings and Kiwiana.

Ahead of a solo exhibition of locally themed work, Lindsey talks about daily drawing, the creative process and remaining true to an artistic vision.

Can you tell us about your creative process, where does an idea usually begin for you?

A

How would you describe your artwork?

I am a realist painter. My current work explores the beauty of our local hills. I am drawn to contours and changing light at different times of the day and seasons.

Many of my ideas come from fleeting impressions which sit in my mind developing. Sometimes these ideas take months or years to develop as a painting. I take photographs but rarely paint from one photograph. I often manipulate several photos in Photoshop

cutting and pasting elements until I get the composition I want.

Have you faced any creative blocks or challenges? How do you push through them?

Brent Wong

I rarely have creative blocks. I think my drawing practice helps.

I regularly visit art galleries and I enjoy talking with other artists.

How has living or working in a small town like Raglan shaped your journey as an artist?

I have been living in Raglan for nearly 30 years and love exploring around Karioi.

I have painted many works from close to my home and around the coast to Ruapuke.

I spend 12 years in my Raglan studio painting urban landscape focussing on the old Karangahape road area in Auckland but I have always come back to our beautiful local landscape.

Who are some artists or people who have inspired you, locally or globally?

I have been most strongly influenced

Don Binny How do you balance making art that’s true to you with what people want to see or buy?

This can be difficult, particularly if you are a professional artist. I have always supplemented my income with a Screen printing business which I setup 32 years ago in Hamilton. I do the design and graphic work required for the screen printing process. This regular income allows me to be uncompromising in what I paint..

What’s next for you, any upcoming projects or exhibitions.

For three years I have been working towards a solo show of locally themed work. It is the first time that I have had a major show out of Auckland. I am excited to be showing this work at The Mandarin Tree Gallery in Gordonton.

This show opens on the 10th of October going until the 31st. My next series is already planned.

or Ben Parodi, founder of Fuegos, cooking over fire began long before it became a business. It began in Buenos Aires, with a family gathered around a fire and the smell of meat slowly cooking its way through the day. Those early memories have stayed with him. They are about food, of course, but also about the people who gather around it — the conversations, the laughter and the simple pleasure of being together.

“My earliest memories of food are from weekends in Buenos Aires, waking up to my dad lighting the fire early in the morning,”

Ben says. “I would be with my sisters and the rest of the family, sometimes with the whole extended family gathered together.”

He remembers coming home after playing sport and already being able to smell the meat cooking. The anticipation was part of the experience. So were the long family meals that followed.

Although he grew up surrounded by asado, he was not initially the one cooking it. “I was usually the one organising the drinks!” he laughs. His father, however, had taught him the foundations simply through years of watching and being around the fire.

It was not until he arrived in New Zealand that those foundations began to take on a life of their own. As an Argentinian, people naturally asked him to cook asado. What started as a side project slowly ignited something much bigger: a reconnection with home and a way to share a part of Argentina with people in New Zealand.

For Ben, the attraction is simple. “Fire is alive and constantly changing. You cannot simply set a temperature and walk away – you need to watch it, feel it and respond to it.” That is what he loves about it. Fire demands presence. It slows you down.

Wood and charcoal also allow good ingredients to speak for themselves. With the quality of New Zealand produce, he says, there is often no need to complicate things. “Perhaps salt, pepper and a little rosemary.” The fire does the rest.

5 TIPS FOR A GOOD-AS ASADO 1. Start with good wood Use quality wood and let it burn to steady heat and clean embers.

2. Keep the ingredients simple Start with good-quality meat and let the fire do the work.

Salt, pepper and perhaps a little rosemary are often enough.

But fire is about much more than flavour.

It changes the atmosphere around the food.

The warmth, smell, sound and movement naturally draw people closer. People start talking. They become part of the cooking.

A fire transforms the food, but it also transforms the people gathered around it.

That idea sits at the heart of Fuegos, which means “fires” in Spanish. The plural is deliberate. For Ben, it represents the many moments, products and experiences that can grow around fire. Fuegos began with Salsa Brava, his range of chimichurri sauces.

When people experienced the sauces with traditional Argentine meat cooked over wood or charcoal on a parrilla (BBQ), they wanted to recreate it themselves. That led to importing Argentine grills and fire products, followed by catering and eventually asado workshops.

The philosophy remains simple: protect the experience, not just the recipe.

For Ben, a proper asado is naturally social.

Rather than cooking individual steaks, he prefers large whole cuts – sometimes three, four or five kilograms – cooked slowly until the fat renders like butter and the connective tissue softens. There are only four people in his family, so a cut that size means inviting friends and neighbours.

“I can take care of the meat and the fire. I only need the people to show up – and after that, the magic happens by itself.”

That sense of connection is also deeply tied to his life in Raglan. “Raglan is the best place in the world,” Ben says. His heart, he explains,

is shared between Argentina and Raglan, and he carries both places with him. He loves Raglan’s connection to nature, the ocean and its slower rhythm. He also credits the community with expanding his understanding of food, introducing him to different cultures, ingredients and ways of eating.

Ultimately, that is what he hopes people take away from Fuegos. They may not remember every cut of meat or every dish, but he wants them to remember the warmth, aromas, conversations and how the experience made them feel.

“We live in a culture increasingly built around speed and convenience,” Ben says.

“We are also losing the ritual of sitting down, talking, slowing down and simply enjoying being with other people.” For him, lighting a fire is a way of creating space. Space to think, to talk, to eat, to connect.

And perhaps that is the real magic of asado. The food gives people a reason to gather, the fire creates the atmosphere, and the people turn the moment into a memory.

Good wood, good food and good people.

Everything else can happen naturally.

BEN’S FIRE-COOKED BEEF SHORT RIBS Beef short ribs are my favourite food to cook over fire and they represent everything I enjoy about asado. They begin as a large, simple cut of meat, but when they are cooked slowly over wood fire and charcoal, the fat renders, the connective tissue softens and the flavour becomes incredible. Serves: 4–6 Cooking time: Approximately 4–6 hours, depending on the size of the ribs and the heat of the fire.

Ingredients: • 1 cup 2–3 kg beef short ribs, preferably a meaty whole cut • Sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • A few sprigs of rosemary • Quality wood and charcoal Method: 1. Light your fire and allow the wood to burn. You want steady, controlled heat and flames.

Fire is the main star and needs to be roaring.

3. Learn to read the fire There is no temperature dial. Watch, feel and respond. If something is cooking too quickly, move it further away. If it is too slow, bring it closer.

2. Season the short ribs generously with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Keep it simple – the quality of the beef and the flavour from the fire should be the focus.

4. Cook a big cut A whole cut of meat creates the time and atmosphere that makes an asado special. Slow cooking allows the fat to render and the connective tissue to soften, producing incredible flavour and texture.

4. Cook slowly for several hours, turning when necessary. You are looking for the fat to render gradually and the connective tissue to soften until the meat is deeply flavoured and tender.

5. Invite good people The final ingredient is the people. Share the food, share the fire, have a drink and let the conversation happen. That is when the barbecue becomes an experience.

3. Place the ribs on the parrilla over indirect, moderate heat. The aim is to cook them slowly.

Watch the fire and adjust the height of the grill as needed.

5. Allow the ribs to rest before serving. Slice between the bones and serve generously.

Optional sides: Keep the accompaniments fresh and uncomplicated. A traditional chimichurri is the obvious partner, bringing herbs, acidity and freshness to the rich beef. A simple Salsa Criolla of finely chopped tomato, onion, capsicum, vinegar and olive oil works beautifully too. For sides, try fire-roasted capsicum, onions, corn or seasonal New Zealand vegetables, dressed simply with olive oil, salt and lemon.

A crisp green salad and good sourdough are all you really need.

The idea is not to compete with the short ribs. Let the fire and the beef remain the heroes.

UPGR A DED COURTS BR ING TE M ATA TENNIS CLUB BACK TO LIFE W I T H T E M ATA T E N N I S C L U B

ore than a century after tennis first took root in Te Mata, a dedicated group of volunteers is bringing the community club back to life.

With upgraded courts already attracting new players, attention is now turning to building membership, introducing coaching and club activities and securing its future for the next generation. We chat to Benjamin Wickers from the club.

Can you please update us on the progress of the Te Mata tennis club project?

We have been hard at work! The courts are looking amazing with the new fencing erected, plantings getting established and new astroturf installed late last year. To complete the upgrades we’re hoping to rebuild the pavilion early next year and a hitting wall is on the cards. But for now, the focus is on getting the tennis club established with memberships, a website with a booking system, club nights, and lessons for kids and adults; basically getting people playing the game.

What is a brief history of the courts and why was it so important to revive them?

The courts were first established back in 1905 and a tennis club formed shortly after. The tennis club has been an important part of the rural community both on a social and sporting level. Throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s it was at its peak with high membership numbers and regular

club nights, tournaments and inter-club competitions. In the early 2000s club numbers dwindled and eventually the club ceased to exist.

As a small rural community, with no other club opportunities within the greater Whāingaroa area, we felt it was important to resurrect the courts and re-establish the club to provide a sporting opportunity to the community.

How do you see them being utilised across the local communities?

We hope to see everyone in the community using the courts. We’ll be offering men’s and women’s social tennis nights, coaching with the head coach at Hamilton Tennis Academy, Suvi, tournaments, and various other events to get the community involved with tennis. Ever since the new courts were installed, we have noticed an

increase in interest and usage of the courts by the community and especially the school kids.

Although the courts will remain open for the public to use outside of school hours, we encourage anyone to join the club both to benefit from the privileges of being a member but more importantly to help cement the club’s long term sustainability.

These community projects don’t happen without a lot of effort from dedicated members. Can you highlight who has been instrumental in this process?

The project has been driven by a small committee of passionate tennis players but the support from helpers and volunteers within the Te Mata community has been amazing. They have provided time, machinery and

resources when needed and without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Te Mata School has also been instrumental in making this all possible.

The school has graciously let us use their courts, and their support has been really special.

Do you have an event to celebrate the opening?

Yes! We’re having an open day on Sunday 18th October to celebrate the start of the season and the beginning of a new chapter at Te Mata Tennis Club.

We welcome anyone to join us for the afternoon with fun activities and tennis drills for the kids, casual tennis for adults, and a sausage sizzle, snacks, and refreshments. Those interested can find us on Facebook at Te Mata Tennis Club to follow for updates.

awai‘i roots reggae artist Mike Love and Aotearoa musician Tiki Taane will share the bill at The Yard Music Café on Saturday, 10 October, bringing two distinctive one-man-band performances to Raglan.

“Aotearoa is one of my absolute favourite places on Earth,” Mike said. “The people, the culture, the land – it’s such an indescribably epic place.”

The Raglan show is part of Mike Love’s fivedate New Zealand headline tour and one of only two performances featuring Tiki Taane.

Known for his work with Salmonella Dub, his solo releases and an extensive live career, Tiki has developed a reputation as one of Aotearoa’s most dynamic performers.

His music brings together roots reggae, rock, soul, blues, folk and hip hop in a style he describes as “revolutionary consciousness music”.

The tour follows the release of his 2025 album Teachers and comes ahead of his Australian appearances supporting Katchafire on the band’s Revival World Tour.

Earlier this month I attended the Hīkoi for Hauora which was organised by Raglan Naturally and Raglan Area School. We walked around the three bridges then came together at the school for a performance by Rob Mokaraka. Rob’s story about his suicide attempt and journey afterwards was eyeopening, vulnerable, funny, tragic and inspiring but what stayed with me was hearing members of our community speak up at the wānanga that followed.

People spoke about their own battles and I was touched by the truths they shared and the tears they cried. These conversations can change the way we view our struggles and how we move through them. I feel grateful to be a part of a community that is prioritising this kōrero and doing it with so much awhi and aroha.

This global celebration highlights GLASS Ka Ora Telecare the power of composting to improve soil, reduce waste, and support thriving local food systems. It was chosen to highlight the role Weeknights 5pm-8am composting plays in communities of all shapes and sizes. Every household has a green 20 litre bin for food waste, which is collected weekly. Simply place your bin on the kerb with the handle in the upright locked position on collection day.

To line your bin, SUPPLIES please use the compostable starch bags provided by XZW. These are the only bags LANDSCAPE accepted, as many other “eco” bags are not compostable in our local system. When you are running low on bags, just pop the note found inside your current pack under the lid of your bin on collection day visibly sticking out like a tongue. Our team will see it and leave you a fresh pack.

You can also pick up bags anytime from Kaahu’s Nest at the XZW site. If you need to join the service or get a replacement bin, visit the Raglan Library and Council Office at 7 Bow Street.
