Dawn blessing for opening of new medical centre

A

dawn blessing, with over 100 people in attendance, was held to bless the new building on Tuesday morning. Local kaumatua Russell Riki and Sean Ellison as well as Pastor Roger Peart and Reverend Fred Gilbert spoke of the significance of the new centre and its vital role in the community.

The new purpose-built premises is now Raglan Medical and the community joined staff and other special guests at the early morning ceremony. This was followed by refreshments and a tour of the centre.

Owner of Raglan Medical, Dr Mike Loten paid tribute to past health practitioners who have provided expert

healthcare in Whaingaroa. He gave thanks to key people who had contributed to the ten year process and in particular Michelle Meenagh “our lovely practice manager and force of nature,who I credit with making this project happen.”

A walk through of the building revealed a spacious modern interior with many local artworks.

Mike concluded “So now under our new name of Raglan Medical we are ready to provide true community based holistic medical care to our wonderful Whaingaroa community”

R

ussell Riki has been West Coast Health Medical Centre’s kaumatua and cultural advisor for the past ten years and continues to represent the centre on cultural matters.

Russell, with guidance from local iwi leaders, has come up with a concept for a carving commissioned by the new centre, Raglan Medical.

“Just like the medical centre is taking care of people and their health needs, the guardians through water are looking out for their people.”

Named Wai-Māori (freshwater), the sculpture will be carved by four local carvers Simon Te Wheoro, Kawharu Greensill, Kelvin Le Lievre and Aaron Kereopa will depict three significant waterways on a globe.

“The carving represents what the medical centre is doing by healing and connecting to people from New Zealand and around the world. If you put your hand in water in Raglan that water connects you to the rest of the world,” he says.

The medical centre is represented by “the globe’ in the carving It encompasses the bicultural and multicultural nature of Raglan community and connects Raglan to the world.

Each stream has a significance representing individual iwi belonging to the west coast. The waterways Wainui and Waikaretu have a significant place in the history of Ngāti Tāhinga people. From

Wainui to Waitetuna is an equally significant place in the history of Ngāti Māhanga. Symbolically, all streams ultimately run into the sea.

“Water is one of the most precious things to Māori as it connects us to the rest of the world.”

For Māori, water is the essence of all life, like the blood of Papatūānuku (Earth mother) who supports all people, plants and wildlife.

Māori assert their tribal identity in relation to rivers and particular waterways have a role in tribal creation stories. Water is also used to cleanse Iwi place a range of values in water, both spiritual and physical - as kaitiaki (caretakers) of the waterbodies in Aotearoa they understand that the health of the waterways is intrinsically connected to the health of the people.

Russell says traditionally Māori in the Whaingaroa rohe (area) would connect to water when travelling away as it was believed to carry their scent to their guardians from home who watched over them. The guardians could then find their way to the people to provide protection.

rchitect Matt Pearson has just designed Raglan’s new medical centre but award-winning houses, from Auckland to Otago, are what his architecture practice is better known for. As the Auckland director of Herriot Melhuish O’Neill Architects (HMOA), Matt does have another link to the medical centre though…

Matt, how did you come to design a medical centre in Raglan?

The old house, that is now the medical centre, used to be my holiday home, and the doctors are family friends. So it made sense that I design it.

You’re a keen surfer and have been holidaying in Raglan for 15 years, why haven’t you designed your own bach here?

I have designed it! I just haven’t managed to build it yet. There’s plenty of time.

Is this a common approach to designing holiday houses?

Flexible living is just one aspect, we also often build in stages, either to accommodate budget or to transition into a permanent residence.

Sustainability is an increasing focus for all our projects.

One of our beach houses favours privacy, sun and shelter over the sea view. Like all good architecture, it’s about designing for a specific site and for a specific client—how they live or how they want to live.

What’s your favourite HMOA holiday house?

Tell us about your journey with Group Fitness.

In 2008 I attended my first Les Mills class and my PT suggested I get into teaching; the rest I guess, is history. I am a certified Les Mills BodyPump instructor and module-trained BodyAttack instructor and have been teaching various group fitness classes for more than 11 years.

What do you love about group fitness?

I love the sense of community; seeing people from all walks of life come together with the shared interest of improving their health and wellbeing, that’s a pretty cool thing to be a part of.

Tell us about Flux classes.

Flux classes cover various training styles including HIIT (high intensity interval training), circuit and choreographed body and weight-assisted classes.

Earlier in the year Steve Crowhurst sold his successful online streetwear website, Fallenfront.

Stepping back from the fast pace of fashion e-commerce and online retail, he spoke to the Local Rag about his change in lifestyle.

You’re a Raglan boy. Where did you grow up?

I lived in Te Mata until I was four. The family’s been on Okete Road in Te Uku ever since.

You lived overseas for a while. At what stage did you return to Raglan and make it home?

I returned home permanently after four years working for Quiksilver in Cornwall on the South West coast of England. Before that, I had a short stint consulting in Shanghai.

When did you set up Fallenfront and why?

Fallenfront online launched in 2012. While working for Quiksilver, I managed some impressive eCommerce accounts. That exposure opened my eyes to the potential of online retail. I saw an opportunity to start something in New Zealand with the bonus of the online aspect allowing me to operate out of Raglan.

What were the early days like when you were a startup?

They were fun. Starting a new venture is always exciting, from developing

the concept to creating brand partnerships, building a customer base and watching sales grow.

How did it progress?

It all went well. It wasn’t long until we had steady sales from all over New Zealand and abroad. Four years after launching online, we expanded into traditional retail by opening a concept store here in Raglan just down from The Shack.

You recently sold Fallenfront but have retained the store. What bought about this decision?

The market was getting very competitive, especially from offshore companies. This, coupled with too much time spent looking at a computer screen, was an excellent motivator to do something different.

How has life changed for you since?

It’s a lot less ‘digital’ that’s for sure.

Not being in front of a computer or attached to a mobile phone is refreshing.

What are you currently doing?

During winter calving I’ve been helping on the family farm. Plus I still own the retail space downtown, renamed EVERYONES’ (the original Fallenfront name and intellectual property went with the new owners of the online store). EVERYONES’ is an apparel, footwear and accessories store with brands like The North Face, Misfit, Baggu, Converse, Beach Brains, Beach Knickers, Ksubi, Thing Thing and lots more for guys and girls.

What are the benefits of making a change?

Being on the farm, working alongside family, taking some time out and researching future opportunities feels great.

Do you see a simplified life continuing or could you end up throwing yourself into new projects?

I’ll still keep things simple, but I am starting to look into new projects.

Which way I go depends on the rewards and type of lifestyle each path leads to. One project I’m

considering is completing a Master’s of Technological Futures. As the world speeds up, technical skills have an ever shorter lifespan, and I believe, now more than ever, you need to learn continually and refresh skills. Waikato also has a lot of emerging, innovative companies pushing the boundaries in their field, working with these businesses while being based in Raglan would be great.

What do you love about the community you live in?

I reckon it’s classic, there’s a good chat anywhere you go. Last Place On Earth The Local Rag chatted to DJ and Lo-Fi head honcho Owen Evans about Lo-Fi Production’s upcoming boutique festival in a local spot near Te Akau...

So whats this LO-FI all about?

How did the idea originate?

What sets you apart from other festivals?

We are a House/Techno collective that produces events and parties with a twist. As well as regular club nights we throw events where the decor, lighting, setting, venue, food and beverage is as important as the music and the most important ingredient is you, the punter.

Well its been a longtime dream to throw a festival, and this started out as a 40th celebration that snowballed.

Do you want to be treated like you are the biggest and best part of the festival experience?

This is where Matt Drake has been invaluable. Taken the passion and mayhem thats in my head and used his knowledge and experience and turned it into something thats achievable. Also the teams behind Shipwrecked festival and Aum festivals are a fountain of knowledge and advice to draw from.

Maybe you don’t like dance music but want to experience something different and unique?

To be part of the collective is super easy. Be passionate, proactive and have a good heart.

We try as much as we can to take this out of the usual clubland venues and put them where house/techno isn’t usually part of the furniture.

We also have a regular podcast/ mix series which nurtures and showcases house and techno.

We also love House and Techno if you can’t tell.

What inspired this?

I have been going and playing clubs and festivals around the world for 20 years, and after a massive O.E returned to NZ to raise a family, however the party gods (and best friends) had other ideas and I discovered the burner style festivals in Melbourne. In particular Rainbow Serpant and Rancho Relaxo.

I like to call these festivals for adults. Where there was a lot more than just DJs on a stage, a bar in the corner and a carpark you pay for. Which is what I was used to. Its here that the freedom to express yourself, your values and the freedom to roam is allowed and more importantly encouraged, and again you are encouraged to be part of these festivals. The more you help the bigger and better the experience.

Also seeing venues and landscapes on the world scene utilised for arts and events. I feel like NZ has the best scenery and landscapes and some absolute killer venues whether they be Theatres, lofts, breweries, wineries, beaches and the like... but we are only recently seeing them utilised to their full potential and because of this people are venturing to these gigs more and more as they are tired of or don’t feel comfortable in a club.

Our aesthetic is always warm, welcoming and organic.

Also when you say inspired it really helps that Veterans of the NZ music scene have come on board with my vision, (Creative director/ DJ/techno enthusiast Matt Drake, Designer/ DJ/ producer extroidanaire Cyril Orson) and longtime friends (too many to name) have lended time, love and money to the project. We’ve had chefs, photographers, space curators, architects, mixologists, artists, every walk of life helping in some way and labels like Beat and Path and Insomniak have come to the party lending there skills and knowledge from the start.. Like I say its a collective. A sum of all parts and We wouldn’t of got this far without love, support of everyone involved.

So whats LAST PLACE ON EARTH then?

Well without giving too much of the mystery away. This is our showcase of what we think a festival should be. We have a fair few surprises up our sleeve that we don’t want to give away but its a camping trip like no other. Amazing DJs, cutting edge dance music, stage design, visuals, food, beverage.

Breathtaking vistas and all put together like this is the Last place on earth. 20 hours showcasing the best NZ (and the world) has to offer.

Tickets will be capped to 500. We want this to be special and intimate. We want this to feel like you can make friends with everyone.

How did you decide on Pepepe as a location?

I would love to say something spiritual like the venue chose us but In reality my good friends and landowners Tim and Jocelyn Orlando-Reep have really seen our vision and let us run with it. Once Tim showed us what his land had to offer it was a no-brainer. Once they realised what I actually wanted to do with their land it was too late! All joking aside they have been amazing and am super stoked to be able to showcase their land to the public.

he Local Rag sat down with owner of The Shack, Justin, to see what the consistently bustling cafe has been up to over the winter months.

How is it going with your focus solely on the Shack now?

It feels great to be able to focus on The Shack and give it a little more love. We have such a great team working at The Shack, it’s a lot of fun and is extremely rewarding, so yes, its good to be back in the kitchen.

Have you made any changes?

Our early spring menu launched earlier this month, and we will continue to change and tweak the menus seasonally.

We have made a couple of operational changes back of house, with how we work the hotline, the pass and larder sections, hoping to streamline service a little.

Hopefully, improving the efficiency and quality of service.

I see that you occasionally have The Shack open in the evening. Tell us about what you are offering?

Yes, we are aiming to hold one or two Friday Night Dinners each month. It’s a very different style of service for The Shack, compared to our day time offerings, and they are a whole lot of fun. The menu leans towards small plates that tables can share ( but you don’t have to share), with an eclectic mix of Mediterranean, Persian and Raglan flavours.

What are the dates for these nights in the next few months?

Our next night will be Friday the 18th of October, any future dates we will promote on social media and instore.

L

uke Hughes grew up in Raglan surrounded by surfboard shaping and surf shop talk, so in some respects it’s little surprise he now heads up the business his parents started downtown back in 1992.

But taking over the helm at Raglan Surf Co was no smooth ride for Luke, coming as it did when his father Craig – or ‘Hughesy’, as the legendary board shaper was better known locally – died after a battle with cancer six years ago.

Luke recalls it as a “very intense time of our lives”, made all the more so by the fact Surf Co had only three years of lease left on the building it had occupied in Wainui Rd for the past two decades.

“We faced losing our dad, (possibly) our business and our family grounding,” he says of the turmoil he, younger brother Nat and sister Ariel went through ahead of their father’s passing.

But their mother Liz talks proudly of how her grieving family made an “allout effort” to maintain the status quo after Craig’s death. They worked the shop between them and Luke was also able to pick up where his father

The stress on the family never really let up until they secured the old ‘Vinnies’ building and could shift their business a few doors further along Wainui Rd when their lease ran out.

Liz reckons Craig “always had his eye on this building”, and is pleased that in moving Raglan Surf Co there they’ve breathed new life into the historic immigrant cottage. What was also Raglan’s first church building – Liz points out the still-intact rosetta – has in its latest guise helped bring a real buzz to the south end of the CBD. She’s grateful for the way her kids pulled together – “did their time” – in those critical few years before taking different career paths. Nat’s not far away, doing an electricians apprenticeship, while Ariel is at Massey University’s Wellington campus in her last year of design school.

The Hughes children all grew up

here, surfing with their parents from an early age and attending Raglan Area School. But while Luke and then Nat went through the school’s surfing academy – and both became head boys – Ariel headed over the divvy to Sacred Heart Girls College for her secondary education.

Of the siblings, Luke was the obvious one to step into his father’s shoes.

He was not only the oldest but, as a Billabong-sponsored surfer since his teens, had already travelled and surfed widely. “I was lucky having competed and been all around the world ... I could think about my future.”

Now managing director of Raglan Surf Co, the 32 year old is not only juggling the retail side of the business with surfboard shaping – an art form in itself – but is also active within the community like Craig before him.

A family man himself, he wants to ensure his children have the chance to grow up in a unique environment like he had. That means getting involved and having a voice in the direction and growth of the town, he says.

As such, Luke’s currently into his second year as chairman of Raglan

Point Boardriders, one of the oldest surfing clubs in the country, and one on which his father sat as a committee member for many years.

“Our family’s always been proactive in the (local) boardriders club,” Luke says. “It’s about looking after surfers at grassroots level.”

Luke is also giving back to his old school, as an occasional mentor or as a volunteer taking kids surfing.

The business sponsors Raglan Surfing Academy and other school scholastic teams, he adds, and gets behind fundraising events generally.

Luke and Liz both work to keep Surf Co’s positive vibe alive. Says Liz: “I have huge pride at being involved in something that we love, have a passion for.”

The business was never about the money, she adds, it was about the family finding their niche by the sea in a like-minded community.

Luke shares that pride as he shapes the business his own way, taking on his father’s legacy and moving it forward. His recent addition of a coffee bar helps contribute to the “feel-good” factor, he believes, and builds on that sense of community downtown.

Marathon fundraiser reaches final lap with brick-by-brick project Western Rural Cluster

aglan’s new creative space behind the Old School Arts Centre is in the last lap to the finish line as the Raglan Community Arts Council (RCAC) pushes to find the final funds needed to complete the building.

The marathon Creative Space fundraiser is in its sixth year and the RCAC is making the final push with a Brick-by-Brick project, which offers Raglanites the chance to buy a brick personalised with their name to be used in the paving and landscape design around the new building.

One of the first to put her hand up for a brick is Clay Shed volunteer Susanne who has been part of the Creative Space project since the beginning. Susanne is buying the brick for her grandchildren who she hopes will make full use of the Creative Space.

“I’m passionate about providing a space that gives our future generations the opportunity to thrive creatively, which will have a positive impact in other areas of their lives,” she says.

RCAC chair of the Rodger Gallagher says the seed for the Creative Space was sown in the late 1980s by the then RCAC chair Marizio Sarzini, an Italian architect.

“When I first joined the arts council committee in 2004, one of the long term members, the late Nev Meekings, gave me a box of archive papers. When I looked through these, I found drawings that Marizio had done for a building to be built out the back of the Old School. I always thought it was a pity that this building was never built. It’s great that we now have the Creative Space coming to fruition and part of Marizio’s dream being a reality.”

With the original vision coming to life last year, Rodger says a huge effort has been made by local businesses, funders and the wider community to raise money to put the final touches on the space.

The versatile building off Stewart Street has been planned to meet the community’s needs and replaces the old Clay Shed and Lions Club Shed, creating an additional multi-functional space that will cater for meetings, drama, theatre, music, and physical art forms such as ballet and tai chi.

Many in the community have offered services free or at a reduced rate to get the building started, Rodger says, others have painted tiles, bought raffle tickets, and eaten soup at Souper Bowl nights.

“Thanks to a lot of hard work by volunteers, amazing support from our Raglan Whaingaroa community, and donations from several community funders we have been able to get the building to a watertight, but empty, stage.

We now need to find the final funds to complete the project.”

The Brick-by-Brick campaign is an opportunity for individual, families and business to be a solid part of this wonderful new facility which will benefit the entire community.

There are 300 bricks available for a donation of $300. A charitable donation receipt will be issued for tax rebate use.

Businesses can claim the donations as a marketing expense. Sponsorship options from $300 plus GST are available.

very two years students come together from the Western cluster to compete in the highly anticipated speech competition hosted by Te Uku School.

The standard is high because the students who attended have been placed in their local school competition before qualifying for the grand final at Te Uku.

A panel of local judges were most impressed with the efforts of the students who delivered topical speeches with confidence and conviction. Speech topics included the homelessness, women in sport, fast fashion, global warming and vegetarianism.

Speakers were not afraid to discuss euthanasia and postcose cancer but there were also humorous topics like surviving at home with too many sisters.

Jillian Lankshear Jet artist moves out of the dark room to create works of photographic art Janine Jackson

W

haingaroa photographer J i l l i a n Lankshear will be a familiar sight to many pedalling her way round town on her trusty bike with old-fashioned basket on the back.

She’s also one of the awesome artists behind the Jet Collective nestled between Ray White and The Shack on Bow St. The tiny shop is a treasure trove of stunning local artwork and is a hit with locals and tourists alike.

Jillian’s responsible for the framed prints, photographic coasters, annual Raglan calendar and sweet little sketches inspired by her photography.

Originally from Raumati South on the Kapiti Coast, she moved with her family to Gisborne when she was 10.

Photography has been her first artistic love and enduring passion. It started with a 110 Instamatic she was given as a 12-year-old living in Gisborne.

“I took it everywhere. We lived on a farm next to the beach and there was a never-ending source of beautiful pictures to take,” she says.

The girl from Gisborne who ran around taking photos with her little Instamatic made a lifelong career out of photography.

Leaving school, Jillian went

Image | Geraldine Burns on to study early childhood education and fancied herself as a kindy teacher but quickly realised it wasn’t for her. She had done a photography elective while studying and loved getting in the dark room to develop pictures.

Jillian got a job as a dark room technician in Gisborne and when she did her OE she worked in a professional photography lab in London developing photographs for big-name advertising agencies.

“It was handy working in a lab, seeing other people’s photos and learning from their mistakes has helped my work.”

Jillian met her partner Craig in Hamilton when she returned from overseas. They were at a party and she knew instantly that she fancied him.

They lived in Hamilton together for several years and Jillian worked at Langwoods, a nationwide photography lab developing one-hour photos for the snap-happy general public. At the Hamilton lab, she was working on enlargements and other work that required a skilled technician.

Jillian then worked for Photo Team in 1995 and stayed with the lab until they closed in 2006.

Renting a friend’s darkroom for a year, Jillian continued printing for professional photographers who still needed the service.

She started her own Hamiltonbased business The Darkroom

in 2007 and when the digital world finally took over, Jillian closed the business in 2013.

The couple had made the move to Raglan 22 years ago. Both had been doing the commute over the divvy until Craig was given the opportunity to open a panel beating business in 2005 on Park Drive next to Raglan Engineering.

Sadly, Craig suffered a heart attack and died in 2016. It came as a complete shock to Jillian; he had always been fit, working in a job that required physical stamina and indulging his passions for motor biking and sailing.

When Craig started sailing he was a ‘semi-novice’, Jillian says, and when the chance arose to purchase a catamaran Blamm, Craig talked a friend and experienced sailor into going halves in the vessel.

Craig’s passion very quickly swept Jillian along and she too became part of the sailing fraternity at the Raglan Sailing Club.

She still belongs to the club and during competitions she’s on the safety boat keeping the races in order and keeping people safe.

“It’s such a nice way to see the harbour. I’m not really a sailor.

I just do what I’m told,” she laughs.

After Craig’s death, Jillian had to pick up the pieces of their shared life; the shock of the sudden death, winding up the

panel beating business and the other ‘administrative’ tasks that need to be dealt with didn’t give her much time to grieve.

“It’s still a shock, I wondered for a long time where he was and when is he coming home.”

Buoyed by the community in the town she loves, Jillian made steps forward with her life and learned to do things she had never had to worry about before.

“It’s wonderful living in a community like Raglan when something like that happens – it’s such a good community.”

Craig had always been the driver so Jillian had never bothered to re-learn since she was a teenager, happy enough to get around on her bike.

With the help of good friends, she learnt to drive; sitting her learners in 2017 and then passing her restricted in 2018. It gave her a level of independence that would have been difficult if she’d only ever stuck to cycling.

And Jillian has driven further afield to visit family and friends in Hamilton, Matakana and Waihi, but even the simple luxury of popping into town to do the shopping has made life easier for this former nondriver.

She has continued working at Jet several days a week, and is a member of the Raglan Community Arts Council that oversees the Old School Arts Centre. She also delivers the

Old School newsletter every month around town.

“The Old School is a really amazing space and I’m happy if I can help in a small way to keep it running,” she says.

Describing her photography style as set up shots, Jillian takes found objects and places them in scenery that is incongruous to the object.

“In that situation I’m taking photos how I ‘think’ them as much as how I see them. But I also love photographing the scenery in Raglan. We are surrounded by beauty - there’s no end of inspiration.”

Jillian has developed a series of uniquely-themed coasters (four, six or eight to a set) to indulge the photography she loves. As well as a wide variety of scenes she also has sets of typed characters (using an old typewriter) featuring Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings, plus sets of cellos, horses, nursery rhymes, liquorice allsorts, sheds, old churches and more.

Her Raglan pictorial calendar has been a hit with locals and tourists for 10-years, and it keeps Jillian on her toes trying to find new ways to showcase the stunning Whaingaroa scenery she loves to photograph.

RAGLAN GOLF CLUB 50TH BIRTHDAY Raglan Golf Club was officially incorporated on 17th October 1968 and a 50th birthday celebration is planned Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6.

Saturday will begin with a blessing which will be followed by a golf tournament. There will be various divisions with prizes for each division. Lunch will be available. After the tournament, a dinner will be held in the clubrooms starting at 6.00pm.

Sunday will be a perfect day for visitors to come to the course and witness the improvements. Starting at 10.00am, the day is focused on being a family friendly event.

The action will be free, or by a gold coin donation to encourage golf club members and their family and friends, to come along and experience the golf course and its surroundings.

Raglan Holiday Park is part of the Waikato District Council, which has an ambitious plan to deliver on its vision of creating Liveable, Thriving and Connected Communities.

Who are we looking for We have an exciting (and rare) opportunity for someone to join our Night Services team! This is a casual position to support the team during our peak season.

In this role you will patrol, guard, and protect the camp’s premises, assets and staff. You will be maintaining a highly visible presence, focusing on the prevention of all illegal and inappropriate actions including; preventing fire, trespassing, theft and/or vandalism. So we need someone who has strong communication and conflict resolution skills paired with a can-do attitude.

Hours of work for this position will usually be after normal business operating hours, so availability for evening and weekend work is a must. Ideally you’ll have experience in a customer facing role, and the confidence to handle any situation that arises - as in this role; no two days are the same!

Who are we looking for We have a great opportunity for a new Cleaner to join our team! Our Housekeeping team is in need of an experienced cleaner who has a can-do attitude and isn’t afraid of getting stuck in.

In this role you will ensure that an exceptional level of cleanliness at the Raglan Holiday Park is maintained so that guests are able to enjoy their stay. You will be responsible for the day-to-day cleaning of all areas of the Park, ensuring that the Cabins, Units and Park facilities and its surrounding area are clean and safe for people to stay in.

Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience in the cleaning industry, but most importantly we need someone with a proactive approach to customer service, the ability to solve problems and excellent communication skills.
