eisje Laboyrie graces our cover this November. A long term Raglan local who has achieved great things by sheer hard work, a good eye and clever decisions along the way.

Jacqui from the Local Rag connected with her to learn about her current business ventures and lifestyle.

How did the idea come up to start Out of Ubud?

My partner Matt were having a holiday in Bali six years ago and decided to bring a container home as we were building our home at the time. We had extra space in our shipping container so we decided to sell some stock to help cover the costs.

We started off doing a few markets then a pop-up shop in Raglan Township which we thoroughly enjoyed so we began to brainstorm ways of continuing to be able to have holidays and buying missions combined. After we completed our new build, we had a couple of empty small huts on our property, which we lived in during the construction of our house, so we then thought it made sense to have a little shop there on our land close to home .

How do you source all the products?

For the first three years, we combined a once a year holiday and buying trip which

involved hiring a scooter and navigating our way around sourcing potential stock in local markets. We were also able to meet locals who made the products.

When Covid hit, we then were able to contact our suppliers via WhatsApp so they could video call us showing all their new stock. We have formed a close friendship over the years with our shipping company, David Bali Cargo. His wife has helped us to be able to continue buying products off small villages and markets. She loves sourcing our goods.

Have you always had an interest in home wares and creating beautiful spaces?

Yes, I always loved going into beautiful shops, looking and dreaming of fitting out my own home one day. This dream became a reality as we were able to bring some amazing furniture and home wares home. I’ve always had a passion for gardening so I was able to add some lovely hand carved Stone Buddhas into my garden and court yard areas.

You are out of town so are a destination store. How does this work for you?

We were lucky with our location as it’s close to the main highway so it’s easy for customers to pop in. Raglan Signs helped us to create signage heading into and out of town.

How do people find you and contact you?

We have a very basic website and Facebook page which gives people a look into the sorts of products we offer. Word of mouth seems to bring a lot of visitors in. Also we get a lot of holiday makers from all over the country popping in along with many locals who drive by curiously wondering what we have.

Tell us about your other businesses?

Besides running the shop we have five kids between us who keep us busy and on our toes. I also have gardening and lawn mowing businesses (Garden Girls) and (Raglan Lawn Girls) so it’s a juggling act, a lot of the time tag teaming with myself and Mathew. After 10 years getting my hands dirty in the garden, I am fortunate to have a couple of amazing workers who help keep the gardening and lawn business running smoothly. I am now enjoying being able to spend more time at home not only running our shop, but playing in my nursery propagating plants.

I am also known as the egg lady or the chicken lady so I spend many hours a week tending to my girls (chooks) whom I love dearly.:-) You have a lot going on Meisje. I have always admired your work ethic and how you have never shied away from getting stuck in with the physical work to create

wonderful results in both your personal environment and for your clients.

How do you ensure you don't get burnt out? How do you find balance as a mother, partner, friend, and multiple business owner?

Well yes, I'd like to say I have it down to a fine art but I do have blow out moments trust me, ask my kids ha ha ... but it’s very much a balancing act and I try to tick a little off each box most days. I must admit I wouldn’t be able to do it all without the massive support physically and mentally I have from Mathew. Walking my dog on the beach is also one of my favourite times to charge up my batteries and collect my thoughts. Going to bed early helps, as well as catching up with great friends for a wine …this is where we do a lot of problem solving!!

wned and operated by Bucko and Goldy, there’s a colourful crew of characters at Raglan Auto, Tyres & Marine.

Mechanic by day, musician and singer by night, Steve Fitter is the man keeping local vehicles roadworthy, capably assisted by automotive apprentice Lucca Page, who is a high-performing understudy to Steve.

Fanny Mobe is in the office keeping the crew in line and making sure everything runs smoothly.

And currently, Sam Christie is doing his work placement in the tyre shop.

“We’ve got a good bunch working here,” Bucko says.

Bucko - Peter Buckley, and Goldy Peter Goldsworthy bought the mechanical workshop, tyre business and Repco shop off Raglan Engineering’s owner Pete Williams three years ago.

It might be a little out of sight compared to the other local operators but they pack a big punch with what they offer.

From marine and auto parts and accessories, tyre repairs and wheel alignments to vehicle rentals, WOFs and vehicle repairs and maintenance, they’ve got it covered.

And if you need to buy a car from a trusted local, they’ve recently added car sales to their business portfolio.

“We have just become a licensed motor dealership, as we were often getting asked to locate vehicles for customers,” Bucko says.

Car sales was Bucko’s first job out of school, so he knows what he’s talking about and he’s not afraid to make fun of the stereotypical car salesman.

“I grew up selling cars and had my own car yard. I could do the whole wide ties, bad plaid or safari suits and inflatable guy with waving arms thing,” he laughs.

Timing, of course, is everything and despite the difficulties of running a business in the midst of COVID lockdowns, Bucko and Goldy haven’t looked back.

Community is at the heart of what they do; supporting Whāingaroa youth with work placements, free Repco deliveries, and they are looking at running free vehicle maintenance workshops in the near future for people wanting to learn the basics.

“We've always hired young people to give them work experience and the schools send their work experience students as well,” Bucko says.

They’re the only business in town with a wheel alignment machine, so not only can you get a large range of new and used tyres but they are fitted and balanced on site. If your ride on mower or tractor tyre gets a puncture, they offer a repair service to get you back to work faster.

Bucko and Goldy are old friends having met through their love of sailing. They

“I met Goldy in Australia 25 years ago and we've both sailed all over the world.

When COVID happened and we couldn't do any more sailing deliveries of the super yachts, we bought the business off Pete.”

The team are super-friendly and helpful; a trip over the divvy was averted when this journalist discovered a headlight could be replaced at no extra charge for the fitting.

Some free advice was thrown in about the vehicle in question and its appeal to car thieves.

“You know your car is one of the most stolen car types in New Zealand,” Bucko says.

“Car break-ins have been a real problem in town. We’ve got steering locks in stock; they sell out pretty quick.”

It’s the small things that make a big difference and Raglan Auto, Tyres & Marine is a local business that really does care.

had the opportunity to learn about Toreparu wetland, a 223ha hidden ecological gem on the coast nestled between Karioi maunga and Aotea harbour, 20 minutes from Raglan. This is an intergenerational project that is in collaboration with hapū, freshwater experts, landowners, key organsations and the community.

Mahuru Wilcox a Raglan local and wetland specialist of Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Awa descent and Taruke Thomson hapu representative, Ngati Whakamarurangi, shared their knowledge of Toreparu and their involvement in the work being undertaken.

I know that you have done a considerable amount of work with hapu on the restoration of the Toreparu Wetland, can you share some of that journey? Mahuru The journey has definitely been a collaborative one! None of the mahi I have contributed would have been possible without the support, incredible knowledge and vision of Ngāti Whakamarurangi, particularly Taruke.

I had spent a lot of time in the area, growing up, and out at the Thomson whānau farm at Te Mākaka, and then when Taruke and my mum bought their farm on the south-eastern edge of Toreparu. It wasn’t until I got interested in freshwater and wetland ecology that I could appreciate what a gem of a place it is, and its ecological value. I did my MSc on how mātauranga Māori and science work together to assess health of wetlands. With the support of Taruke and Mōtakotako marae, I got a whole different appreciation of Toreparu, through hearing the long history of the hapū with the repo and a different way of understanding “value”. The journey is an ongoing one and we are in the process of setting up a Trust so we can receive funding for restoration, predator control and the supporting the hapū and community to reach their aspirations for a healthy and thriving repo, for many generations to come.

How significant is the Toreparu to this area? - Mahuru I can only speak about this from an ecological perspective as Taruke is

the expert on its significance for Ngāti Whakamarurangi. Ecologically it’s a real hotspot! For context, the Waikato region has lost over 75% of its wetland, with most of the remaining ones being peatlands in the Hauraki and Meremere areas. Swamps, like Toreparu were not very common in the region, and at 223ha, Toreparu is one of the largest intact ones on the west coast. Its home to a number of rare and threatened plants and animals, including native fish, eels, swamp maire, hūrepo (Australasian bittern) and other wetland birds, and last summer we discovered something very exciting…native long-tailed bats! So it really is an ecological gem, in desperate need of pest control and restoration, to sustain these special species. Aside from these species, the Toreparu provides an essential role in the environment, filtering water that comes from a number of streams, ensuring clean and clear water when it reaches the sea. Swamps help reduce and hold sediment, and create a buffer which takes up excessive nutrients from the surrounding farmland run off. All these things lead to ocean acidification and algal blooms if wetlands aren’t there to do their job. They also help buffer the effects of climate change by slowing water in floods, and holding water in droughts. Wetlands are amazing and I wish more people cared about them!

As for its importance of Toreparu for Ngāti Whakamarurangi, I’ll pass over to Taruke.

Taruke: Toreparu Wetland is considered a significant site for us as tangata whenua and is marked by three boundary markers, Te Kōwhatu, Te Ruataniwha and Te Kaitiaki. In the northern end of the wetland is Horokawau, a significant waterfall and fish ladder which native fish use to climb further up the catchment to Karioi.

Toreparu is rich in cultural history with numerous pā (fortified habitation) and kāinga (village) sites overlooking the wetland, which was considered an abundant food and resource basket by our people. There were once two large pā tuna (eel weirs), Te Kōkiri and Te Awa a Heketoru, which provided a reliable source of food, along with locations within the Toreparu that were used for setting hīnaki (nets). Along with historical information, tangata whenua from Mōtakotako have specific sites where other resources such as food, weaving materials, dyes, rongoa (medicines), and

Toreparu. water for different rituals were and still are collected.

Ngāti Whakamarurangi have identified the loss of indigenous vegetation, weed invasion, land management practises, stock access and declines in water quality as being key issues affecting the health and function of the wetland, and we are working with landowners, local council, DoC and others like Mahuru to turn things around. Toreparu was once an integral part of the lives of tangata

whenua, but this has reduced as land ownership changed and connection with the Toreparu has been compromised. As a result, hapū were separated from the Toreparu and today most members have little knowledge about the poor state of the wetland and the challenges of restoring it. By restoring and doing mahi in and around Toreparu, reconnection and that knowledge can be strengthened once again.

How do you incorporate Mātauranga Māori in the work you do? Why is it important? - Mahuru It is essential! I see the future as being a collaborative one, where the role and knowledge of kaitiaki is given the respect and support it deserves.

Tangata whenua know their lands better than any of us and are invested in its health for generations to come. Caring for taiao is an intergeneration thing, not just a 1-5yr project. That’s not to say that science and other tools are not useful. There is a role for other tools and knowledge systems if it aligns to the shared vision of local iwi/ hapū and community. For too long we have used outside tools to guide our understanding and vision for Aotearoa…and where are we now? Close to ecological collapse in many areas with rivers and streams that are unswimmable, our own harbour that has constant warnings for pollution and shellfish poisoning, taonga species disappearing at a very alarming rate and humanity which is so disconnected from the world around us, and each other.

Indigenous knowledge and mātauranga is grounded in connection, generations of observation, sustainable use of resources, and reciprocity.

We have so much to learn from mātauranga Māori and tangata whenua, and I really see my role as a researcher and scientist as hearing the problem, what the goal is, and pulling in tools that can help reach that goal. This includes science but also development of mātauranga-based tools and using existing tools like the Wetland Cultural Health Indicator, for example.

What are your thoughts on climate change and the impact that it may have on our wetlands? - Mahuru Wetlands are essential pieces of the climate change puzzle. I mentioned before, but they act as a buffer to extreme weather events. Nationally, with 95% of wetlands having being lost to drainage, development, land-use effects within the catchment etc, we see what happens when there are floods and drought. For example, when forests and wetlands are lost in the upper catchment, you get huge sedimentation issues when floods happen. We saw this in Hawkes Bay and the east coast after cyclone Gabrielle. When town planners approve development on current or historic wetland areas, these areas are completely flooded in heavy rainfall events, as we saw in Auckland in January.

As we think forward to a future where the climate may look very different, we need to develop restoration plans that are both resilient and adaptable, so our wetlands can thrive and balance can be restored.

What are the future plans for the Toreparu and how can our community support this work? - Mahuru We are in the process of starting a Trust so we can receive funding for pest control, weed control and other restoration activities. Keep an eye out on the Toreparu Hūrepo Facebook or Instagram pages where we post updates on what we are up to. Once the trapping network has been established, we will be looking for volunteers to help maintain traplines. Similar to what Karioi Project are doing! So any keen people, especially those in the Te Mata and Aotea areas

We are currently undertaking a research project with Ngāti Whakamarurangi, to develop a resilient restoration plan for Toreparu, to take into account climate change and how the community plan for this. And of course, the local landowners

are doing awesome mahi fencing off their edges of the repo (swamp) andundertaking planting and weed control. It’s a huge project but so many people are positive and behind the idea, so we are really excited to get stuck into it!

aglan’s renowned Soundsplash Festival is gearing up for its muchanticipated return in 2024 unveiling a fresh lineup of artists set to light up the stage next year.

The first lineup announcement includes a diverse range of International and local acts. Freshly unveiled are headliners; Coterie, Delta Heavy, K Motionz, Mallrat, Tiki Taane and joining them will be acclaimed genre-defying quintet, Delhibased Peter Cat Recording Co. Peter Cat Recording Co. draws inspiration from a diverse spectrum of influences, spanning from Sam Cooke to Hindi film music and even Bangkok surf rock. Psychedelic disco-rock collides with high-octane gypsy jazz, with trumpets soaring above snug chord progressions and lively drum rhythms.

Yet what truly captivates the listener is frontman Suryakant Sawhney's voice— an agile, velvety croon that seems like Sinatra under the influence of mindaltering substances.

After years of being one of India's best-kept musical treasures, Peter Cat Recording Co. is finally making their way to the southern hemisphere, making their NZ debut at Soundsplash. Earlier this year, when they unveiled their first U.S. tour, the band quickly sold out three nights in New York and four in Los Angeles without any marketing.

Their growing Western popularity is partly credited to pandemic-era music discovery and prominent Spotify playlist features.

International acts will be joined by homegrown talents, including Georgia Lines, and Raglan's very own Muroki and Reiki Ruawai.

Reiki, known for his work with band Masaya, will deliver a solo performance at Soundsplash 2024. He has established himself as a captivating presence in the R&B, dance, and soul genres, crafting music rich in enchanting vocals and evocative melodies, pulsating with emotion and rhythm. His recent singles like "Working Title" and "Papatuānuku" showcase this mesmerising blend.

Influenced by his scenic hometown Whāingaroa, Reiki's artistry resonates deeply with audiences.

Muroki has produced a series of laidback hits, including the platinum-selling track "Wavy." He caught the attention of Benee and earned a spot on Elton John's Rocket Hour radio show in 2020 with his self-released debut. In 2023, he launched singles like "Sweet Lime" and "Watching Movies," crafted and recorded during sessions in New York and Berlin.

Muroki is set to introduce a succession of fresh tracks for his expanding fanbase.

Both Reiki and Muroki were part of the APRA AMCOS SongHubs initiative in February, where Kiwi writers collaborated with top international talents. The event was curated by critically acclaimed songwriter and producer Jordan Rakei, along with two internationally lauded songwriters from the UK, Holly Fletcher (Låpsley) and Ben Jackson-Cook.

Joining our hometown stars will be Georgia Lines, a rising luminary in the New Zealand music landscape. She has swiftly captivated audiences throughout the nation with her exceptional voice, magnetic presence, and songwriting prowess. In 2022, Lines made a pronounced entrance into the ranks of top-tier local artists with her EP "Human," which debuted at No 3 on the NZ Top 40 and led to a triumphant nationwide tour.

Her soulful and dreamlike vocals, coupled with her distinct, feel-good R&B-infused

pop compositions, are forging a sound that's becoming increasingly impossible to overlook.

The team behind Soundsplash is excited to celebrate 23 years of Soundsplash festival, which strives to create a unique environment bringing together live music, art and culture.

Earlier in the year Soundsplash organisers announced major changes to their entry

process, including the introduction of a Road to Raglan Auckland return bus and staggered entry times to tackle wait times experienced during the last event. More information and tickets are available at the festival website soundsplash.co.nz.

T

here is no denying that surfing is embedded in the heart of Raglan, and plays a vital role in the wellbeing of our community.

Through our latest Surf Series we have gotten to know some of Raglan’s up-and-coming surfers and their families. It is inspiring to hear their stories and feel their passion for the waves.

It has reminded us of some of the stories we were lucky enough to hear a few years back when we ran a series called, ‘Surf Into Summer’.

‘Surf Into Summer’ took us deep into what many would call ‘the beginning’ of surfing in Raglan.

We thought it would be timely to share a little bit about those who paved the way for surfing in our community.

Although there are only a few around who might still remember their names– their stories, experiences and love for the water has played a vital role in the waves we are lucky enough to surf today and laid the ground for the surfing community of Raglan.

And if you’re going to surf at Manu Bay, you should at least know about ‘The Originals’.

Manu Bay wasn’t always the spot for surfing in Raglan. Prior to 1960, most of the ‘surfing’ was happening out at Whale Bay, on surf skis.

It wasn’t until 1960 on a legendary day in February that the Manu Bay waves came to life, and would be forever etched into surfing history. For a few years, Peter Miller had been driving out from Hamilton to surf at Whale Bay. But on the 28th of February in 1960 (a date that was confirmed thanks to the diligent diary keeping of Peter’s wife), the towering waves forming around the point were irresistible.

If you look closely at some of the old Boardrider’s trophies, you’ll see that the contests date back to the early 1960’s.

Inspired by The Originals and the 1959 surf film 'Gidget,' Butch Walters, a Raglan local, got himself a board and jumped in the water. In 1964, Butch won the first Junior's Point Board Rider's competition.

At that time, he was one of only a couple “Raglan locals” who actually surfed, with the rest of the very small lineup hailing from Hamilton, Auckland and Australia.

And Peter, with his handmade 10-foot Malibu board walked down the hillside at Manu Bay and took the plunge. Little did Peter know that this decision would be the spark that would ignite a surfing revolution, and put Raglan on the global surfing map.

Peter Miller was just one of The Originals; aptly named for being the original surfers of Manu Bay. The Originals included the likes of Richard Carr, Campbell Ross, Ces Marsh, Mike Court (who would go on to bring the Billabong franchise to New Zealand), and a handful of others.

It was The Originals who established The [Hamilton] Point Boardriders Club in 1962, which is still active today and known as The Raglan Point Boardriders Club.

Many might not know, but there was once a clubhouse at Manu Bay for the Boardriders–an old shack trucked out from Hamilton where The Originals would lock their boards inside. After a few years though, the clubhouse was overran with rats, so Mike Court went out and burned it to the ground. And that was that.

Tell us about your mahi?

One of the jobs I do is I work on the farm with my dad.

I do milking, calving, tagging and everything that comes with that job. I do that every second weekend and on the alternative weekend I help my nana at her wedding venues doing catering etc. Finally I enjoy helping Johnny Rickard with a kids class at the Refinery. So every Tuesday at 4pm I help run a class for three to ten year olds who are learning basic punches and kicks and playing games and having fun.

I feel good giving back because I know its improving their lives, the smiles on their faces, the laughs makes it all worth it.

What advice would you give to young people?

or this edition of the Whaingaroa Youthwork Collective Rangatahi Page we interviewed Summer Diprose. Summer shares her wisdom and passion for music, Muay Thai, volunteering and more. We are grateful to Matua Johnny from the Refinery for all the opportunities he is providing for rangatahi in Whaingaroa.

at RAS for over a year and I have been really enjoying it and trying to find things in the community. One of the many things I have found a love for and been able to continue with in Raglan is music. I have been able to go to the Rock Quest with the school. I was able to perform my own song with a group. I play the guitar and sing. I have been songwriting since i was 11. I got into music as I have grown up in a musical household. All my family plays an instrument, there's always music around.

The Rangatahi Page is about highlighting the positive impact and contribution youth create for our community. They are employed at local businesses, volunteer and support a variety of kaupapa. We acknowledge and are grateful for what rangatahi bring to Raglan.

I love living in Raglan, I love the views, I love the people, I love the summer time especiallyeverything about it. I have a passion for motocross. I love doing motor cross. My brothers, my dad and me we all go and do trail rides and motocross comps all the time and its really cool.

I have been really into for the past four years Muay Thai.It started off as a casual thing just going once a week trying to get my fitness up and finding something I might enjoy and its led to me this year having my first two fights at NZs biggest fight show.

Don't be afraid to try something just because you have never done it. Don't be afraid of what other people think or worry that you have never done something before and other people have more experience or are better than me. Because you might miss out on an opportunity or an experience that you find out that you love and you have a growing passion for but you never got to try it out.

What advice would you give to the community about how to support young people?

I would say remember to support your kids and other peoples kids and everyone's kids. Remember to support the up and coming generation because they are the ones that are going to be leading and taking care of the next generation, they are going to be the new role models so do your best to come the best role model for them.

n this month's feature we chat to the team at Bizworx Consultancy.

Tell us about the history of Bizworx. When was it established, who was involved and where did it operate from?

The practice was founded in October 2000 by Lynne Wilkins who, at that stage, ran the practice on her own. Staff numbers grew to the 10 staff we employ today. In 2004 we began trading under the name Bizworx Consultancy Ltd, and at that point we were located at the back of the Westpac Bank, where we stayed until 2008. We then moved to 13 Wallis Street and have been there ever since.

How has it changed in the last year?

In December 2022, Lynne decided it was time to pursue other interests and sold the business to Sue Steedman. This was a change that had been planned for a number of years, so the transition to Sue taking over was business as usual. Sue has worked for Bizworx Consultancy since 2003 and has been actively involved in managing the business. So while she is the new owner, she is not new to the business.

What is the ethos of Bizworx?

We aim to provide quality, local service to local businesses and beyond. There is a growing trend for accounting firms to outsource work, some to overseas contractors - we don’t want this to be a part of our future. Our community is our main priority, and we are actively involved in a number of different organisations around town. We provide accounting services to many Not for Profits in and around Raglan and try to be active in our sponsorship of local groups. We want to be local, for our locals.

What are its strengths when working with local business clients?

We are a close-knit team who care about our clients. We want to see your business succeed.

We work on a team approach, so there will always be someone who can help you with your questions.

Who is currently on the team?

A few words from Lynne Wilkins I recently received a certificate celebrating my Chartered Accountant (CA) status for forty years.

Not only was the formal acknowledgement a pleasant surprise, it was a reason to stop and think –

with deep appreciation – about the amazing people that I have worked with during that time.

Twenty-four of those years have been spent working as a CA in Raglan. The challenge throughout has been about adapting to change – technology and legislation being the main drivers of change in our profession, but also we are affected by changes in our environment, the political landscape, our town, and our personal lives.

I will be retiring during November, but I know I am leaving the practice in very good hands. Sue Steedman has been a colleague for more than 20 years, and has been the owner of Bizworx since late 2022. Bizworx continues with a strong, committed team, and I would like to thank each and every employee, contractor, and associate that I have worked with over the years for their dedication and friendship. I would also like to express my gratitude to the community of Raglan for your support over the years.

When did you build and create the Redwood Sauna? What was the process like?

After finishing a Masters in Medicinal Chemistry in Denmark and deciding not to pursue a career in the laboratory, I returned to an old hobby of woodwork.

Using my newly polished grant writing skills, I received funding from the EU to learn how to build sustainably.

My first project was to build a sauna.

Several years later, upon returning to New Zealand and realising the lack of this wonderful addition to life Scandinavians took for granted, I decided to build a sauna for the public and myself. Materials were different in NZ and it took me a few months of research to find good quality, local alternatives. The Redwood sauna was a stepping stone in the direction of what later became Sustainable Saunas.

Why did you believe it was a good idea and a good fit with the community?

Saunas are at the heart of the family in Scandinavia and the rest of the world is just discovering why this is.

The massive improvements to life quality are just one reason. I had mentioned on the Raglan Notice Board about my plan to build a sauna in Raglan and the huge response was pretty affirming. Less than a year later the sauna received 100 to 150 bookings per week.

Tell us about how construction developed into other locations?

Within a few weeks of finishing the sauna I started receiving calls from around the country. People wanted the same thing. No one else was building saunas like this at the time. I had also introduced ‘Aufguss’ in Raglan, which I called ‘Guided Sessions’. This is a way of putting water and essential oils on the rocks and waving around

a towel with music playing. It sounds a little silly and I was unsure how it would be received in NZ, but people loved it. Sessions started to book out a week in advance and others wanted to run saunas in a similar way in their hometown. There are saunas now running for the public in Wellington, Wanaka and one in Christchurch on the way.

What are the different sizes available and how are they used commercially?

I only built mobile 15 person public saunas in the beginning. Then I started getting requests for small private saunas. I had suspected this was where the majority of the market was so I set up several prototypes ranging from 2-8 person saunas. These are now available and are purchased as private additions to existing homes and incorporated into new builds.

Having established a consistent building methodology with sustainably sourced, non-toxic materials, I started

selling the saunas under the brand name ‘Sustainable Saunas’, reminding myself and customers of the central focus.

What is the vision for the business moving forward?

Having established the different models for offer and creating meticulous building manuals, the saunas are now contractually built by Health Based Building in Christchurch, with manufacture starting early next year in Australia.

How do people get in touch to experience the Redwood Sauna and where are you located?

revamped and relaunched Raglan.Net is still the leading online destination for visitors to discover the crème-de-la-crème of what’s on offer in Whāingaroa.

Now run by the Raglan iHub, it is the premier website for connecting tourists to local accommodation, activities, places to eat, and things to see and do.

Raglan iHub board member Angela Williams says Raglan.Net complements the awesome work iHub is already doing to promote Whāingaroa.

“We see the site as a perfect fit for the iHub. When you Google Raglan, Raglan.

Net is at the top of the search results.”

Angela believes the website will not only be an important asset for the iHub but it’s also a great place for local businesses, accommodation providers and community organisations to get advertising bang for buck.

Advertising options start from as little as $52 plus GST per year or, as Angela puts it, only $1 a week.

“There is consistently good traffic to the site and we want visitors to Raglan.

Net to have access to a full range of what’s happening in the area.”

At no cost to community groups to advertise on Raglan.Net, Angela is encouraging the various non-profit organisations, no matter how small, to get in touch.

“Some groups may need to update their details or there may be groups who haven’t got a listing yet. We are keen for our local community groups to make the most of Raglan.Net.” Originally developed by Steve and Lise Moody, Raglan.Net was purchased by Raglan Chronicle owners Dave and Jacqui Smith 15 years ago.

“It has always been Raglan's premier tourism website, highly ranked and informative about the area, and local operators were happy with the bookings received from it,” Jacqui says.

The Chronicle office is now located at the iHub and Jacqui says handing over the website to the iHub was a win-win for both parties.

What inspired your move to Raglan? And why Rangitahi?

Living at the beach was always something we wanted. I (Kirstie) grew up in a small town in the Coromandel Peninsula and absolutely loved being part of a coastal community. Harry was born and raised in Hamilton which is where we lived before moving to Raglan. Our ultimate goal was to live close to the beach because we love surfing and the general lifestyle it brings. A big part of the decision making process was ensuring we were in close proximity to family in the Waikato and Auckland region. We considered a few coastal towns, but everything just clicked for us here in Raglan.

Our work initially brought us to Rangitahi, and we formed new connections with people that we could easily relate to. Raglan quickly became a place that felt like somewhere we could call home. We really appreciated the pace of life here.

Our involvement with building homes in Rangitahi inevitably inspired us to build our own home here.

The prospect of us having our own home in a community like Rangitahi was what we were seeking and an opportunity worth pursuing. With a young family in mind, we thought yep this is a very cool place for our kids to grow up and explore.

Having the walking tracks, the surf and estuary nearby was a massive influence on moving to Rangitahi and something we are looking forward to exploring more this summer!

Tell us more about your build process.

Harry built our house - so it was top notch all round! But on a serious note, we had a smooth experience - which I was not expecting! We started construction during the tail-end of COVID, so we were well aware that staying organised and minimising changes along the way would be key to keeping things running efficiently. It was a strategic move to secure materials and maintain a steady pace on site.

Harry (who deserves the most credit) remained one step ahead of the process the whole time and led us through a very meticulous schedule that saw us settled in our home quickly.

For someone who is typically very relaxed and chill at home, my husband never disclosed his

remarkable organisational skills until we started our build!

Our subbies played a crucial role in executing exceptional workmanship and accommodated timeframes.

For us it’s always about anticipating the subsequent stages continuously throughout the process, and identifying potential hurdles in advance. This proactive approach ensured a smooth flow and synchronised well with the timelines of our subcontractors.

While both of us are admittedly perfectionists and have helped numerous others in building their homes, the reality is that no matter how well you plan, achieving absolute perfection in every detail is impossible.

Designing and constructing your own home is an enormous undertaking, so I think it’s important to highlight that it’s nearly impossible to account for every little thing. It might sound a tad negative, but my most valuable piece of advice for those undergoing build is to accept this.

Through our personal build journey, I’ve discovered that when you’re faced with a decision you’re uncertain about, it’s often best to put it on hold temporarily and revisit it later.

I’m meaning those decisions that have no impact on major components of the build. Many of the aspects we get caught up on during the process tend to be minor details concerning the actual construction. Most of these can be integrated during construction or even after the build is complete (within reason of course!). There’s something to be said for living in a space and gradually adding your personal touches. During the initial stages, direct your efforts towards the aspects that are difficult to alter down the line, and keep the rest relatively simple until you have the capacity to delve into more intricate ideas.

Allowing yourself to experience the space and observe what feels right will undoubtedly yield the best outcome for your home.

filled with toys and books. Given the stage of life we’re in, our interior choices need to be practical and comfortable, creating a space that truly accommodates daily living. I’ve accepted that over time, our furniture will show marks and scratches.

This makes a home. It should carry a story. As time goes on, I intend for our home to become a repository of memories, holding significance and telling a tale of its own.

Now that you are enjoying the Rangitahi lifestyle, what do you love most about it and has it affected your day to day in any way?

The connections it has forged among people is super special. We have made some beautiful friends here. Our neighbours, all the dogs, the friendly conversations that happen on a walk through the neighbourhood – these aspects have certainly enhanced living here. Although Rangitahi is still in its early days, you can already feel the sense of camaraderie within the community.

Stepping out the door, being surrounded in native trees and looking out at the water is pretty remarkable. It’s already very familiar in our day-today life, but I hope we never take it for granted.

Your interior feels incredibly wholesome and like a calm oasis. What inspired this look and how did you go about creating it?

I always enjoy spaces that layer textures upon textures and blending different materials and elements together. Whereas Harry tends to lean towards a minimalist approach. He often would remind me that you can over do it, which I do tend to agree with. Our home reflects the balance of our two perspectives. From the very beginning, our vision revolved around minimalism, with some character to create a space that’s distinctively “us” Being enthusiasts of diverse architectural and interior styles, it’s hard to stick to a distinct “look” – a mix that might be described as Scandinavian design intertwining with contemporary farmhouse aesthetics. Rather than focusing on trends, we’re curating an environment that genuinely resonates with us. Merging different eras of items to create interesting and unique spaces. I invest A LOT of time scouring trade-me and vintage stores for pieces that will compliment the amalgamation.

Some spaces in our still home sit “empty”, patiently waiting for unique pieces to fill them.

We try our best to invest in things that we really love and are going to be used frequently.

We’re quite pragmatic – if an item lacks a purpose, it has no place in our home. Our resident toddler keeps our interiors humble - the floor is often

CH A NGE IS BLOWING IN THE WIND FOR R AGL A N F R O M B L U E F L OAT E N E R G Y

O

n November 9, the BlueFloat Energy & Elemental Group team will be coming to Raglan to host the first of many community information evenings about offshore wind in Waikato. Together we hope to develop up to 3 GW of clean, 100% renewable energy – enough to power around 1.5 million kiwi homes – helping us transition away from non-renewable energies and helping us meet our climate change targets.

Our plans for Waikato are split across two phases.

The first would be an 810 MW fixed bottom wind farm around 22 kilometres off the coast, north of Raglan. We expect that this would create around 550 jobs, mostly in construction, operations & maintenance.

Phase 2 would use floating foundations and be located to the north of Phase 1. This is a newer technology in offshore wind that allows you locate wind farms in deeper water. We believe this could generate around 1,125 MW of new electricity.

We are in the early stages of development, known as pre-feasibility, where we are looking for the best locations in terms of wind resource, grid connection points and local demand for green energy. West Waikato has all of these attributes, as well as a skilled local workforce and training facilities to educate the next generation of offshore wind workers.

The Government is currently working on a regulatory framework that would allow offshore wind to progress.

This is expected in 2024 and we anticipate construction would commence around 2030 if we have gained all of the required approvals and consents.
