R

aglan’s very own treasure trove Zinnia is a tribute to owner Marie Nicholls’ love for vintage and retro.

With long-time manager Jo Sweeney and secondin-charge Charlie Irvin holding fort at the store, Marie is doing what she loves best – sourcing the antiques and collectibles that make Zinnia a destination for shoppers looking for something unique.

Marie’s exquisite taste and keen eye for what’s hot or what’s going to be hot in the market, means she is often ahead of the current vintage trends.

“I started buying vintage as soon as I had my own money,” she says.

Born and bred in Napier, there was definitely the influence from the town’s art deco vibe.

But it was a blue and white Willow jug belonging to her grandfather that first set Marie off on her collectible journey.

“When my grandfather died, I got the jug and I added to the ‘blue and white’ for a while.”

Included in her personal collections are the classic trio of flying ducks and the Crown Lynn swan vases, both of which have increased in value since Marie first set her eye on them.

In the last few years, Marie has been influenced by French ceramics and kitchenware, and a favourite is Majolica pottery.

Evoking a French country kitchen, Majolica is tinglazed earthenware that has grown in popularity and value among collectors.

Her newfound love for French antiquities has taken her on several buying trips to France.

The buying trips are organised by Romantique in Auckland, and Marie joins several other retailers sharing the costs of a shipping container.

“They drive us around all the markets and shops and recycling centres. Anywhere we might find something old and interesting.”

This last trip is already unpacked and adorning the shelves in Zinnia, and Marie is particularly enamoured with the French Aquarium lamps.

“I came upon a collection of them and hadn't seen them before. It took me a while to get my eye and mind around. ‘Gosh, do I like them? Or don't I?’ But I decided I really do like them,” she laughs.

“I’m always looking for things that are quirky and different. They aquariums are from the ‘60s, originally from Vallauris in the South of France where Picasso did his ceramics.”

Zinnia first started life in Hamilton in 2008 and in 2009 the Raglan shop opened; Marie had spent 10 years doing the markets around Auckland and the Waikato before she opted for a ‘bricks and mortar’ shop.

She had already ventured into Raglan with a vintage corner in a shop run by Keith Savage and Lisa

Kerrisk called Right Up My Alley before opening her own shop.

By that time, Marie and her husband were already splitting their lives between Hamilton and Raglan having bought a bach in 1998.

Nowadays, Marie only has the Raglan shop and regular customers will travel to Raglan from Hamilton and beyond to shop at Zinnia.

It’s not only the vintage products that draw the shoppers to Zinnia; books, cards and other gifts are also popular sellers.

With her buying trips taking her out of the country and away from Zinnia, Marie knows the shop is nothing without the amazing staff.

“The staff are really important to me. Jo and Charlie are long-time Raglan residents and they are so good at what they do. I am very lucky to have such a great team.”

Always on the hunt for unusual treasures, Marie is back to France on another buying trip in September.

“I'd like to find more retro stuff from the ‘60s.

And the other thing that sells well from France is the religious iconography.”

With Marie always on the hunt for the unusual, you can be certain of one thing when you visit Zinnia; there will be something new and interesting around every corner.

he Local Rag hears from Fabi Henderson, owner of Raglan Botanicals and Anya Silver Jewellery, about her path in business and her recent business developments.

What is the back story that lead you to where you are now?

After 15 years working in a jewellery shop in Sao Paulo, Brazil I embarked on a journey and started travelling.

I came to NZ about 20 years ago but only to later relocate to New York City for a brief period of two years, dedicating myself to further studies of diamond expertise at GIA and work in a jewellery shop in a diamond district in Manhattan.

Upon returning to New Zealand to establish a family, marrying a Kiwi from Raglan, I found myself pondering the next chapter. Driven by my passion for essential oils, I undertook an Aromatherapy course to assist others with managing stress and nurturing emotional well-being.

Recognising the profound connection between scent and memory, I became a certified Aromatherapist, founding Raglan Botanicals Aromatherapy to provide guidance and safe usage of Essential Oils formulating Therapeutic Products and Natural Skincare.

Yet, my journey didn't end there. Four years later, I felt a longing for my roots in jewellery, prompting me to rekindle that aspect of my career. Anya Silver Jewellery was born, where I applied the wealth of knowledge of natural gemstones in quality 925 sterling silver jewellery.

Fabi Henderson at her new Raglan Botanicals store on Wainui Rd. After establishing my first shop at Made, Hamilton East, I've recently expanded my reach by opening a second location in Raglan town. With this new endeavour, I'm excited to continue growing and serving the community.

Here's to the journey ahead, filled with endless possibilities and opportunities for further enrichment.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking of moving into new locations to expand their business?

Patience and persistence. Expansion takes time and success may not happen overnight. Stay patient, stay focused, and remain committed to your longterm vision for the business.

Having two businesses and two product lines must take a lot of time and energy.

Yes, lots of dedication involved but it's really fun, especially when I can use my background knowledge.

What is a key aspect of business advice that you have learned and would be happy to share?

Being open to new ideas and continuously learning about your niche.

How's life?

Life’s quietening down a bit for me because we are going into winter. So just focusing more on school and work and trying to write new music at the moment as well!

Great, let's get to the music a bit later but tell me about work. Where do you work?

I work at Wyld Cafe; it's good, they pay me well which is really good and the staff are lovely, everyone's really kind.

Tell me about growing up in Whaingaroa?

Life growing up in Whaingaroa is something that I am super grateful for already and I haven't even left. I feel like I will always remember that and it's really like formed me as a person having the community and all the influences of people around me, the arts, music

scene so I think Whaingaroa has made me a lot of who I am because I probably wouldn't have been exposed to that in other places. I love the ocean and I think the conservation culture is something I appreciate!

Tell me a bit about your education because I feel like you have had a really rich education experience.

I attended Matapihi kindergarten and then when it was around time to go to school my parents and a few like minded people thought to make a homeschooling group, so that happened for quite a few years with just going around people's houses and the parents taking turns teaching us playing to their strengths. At some point we had tutors and we have developed a pretty close connection with every one of those teachers we've had.

We were offered very awesome learning; they all have different strengths and it was a very project-based way of learning.

I think it is very cool because everybody got to explore the same topic but in ways that suited their style of learning and their brain. We are just given the free rein to explore our passions.

I have seen you perform at the Old School at WTF etc and you are so talented, so tell us about your journey and your new album.

I have loved music all my life. I have a really musical family. Mum and dad always had lots of music playing, lots of reggae, spanish flamenco, and lots of Rage Against the Machine.

When I was 9ish a teacher said you can sing really well so I started learning guitar.

I played my first gig at 12 at a busking comp, and then I started writing originals and performing. One of the times I performed with this guy Nikau Te Huki and we talked afterwards and he was like I would love to produce a song together.

And so we ended up setting up a recording studio in my house and recorded a song I wrote on holiday in the South Island and we recorded and produced a song in 9 hours.

We released the song on my 16th birthday and it got to 4,500 streams in under a month which I was super stoked about. The name of the song is called ‘God Knows Where’ and it’s on Spotify and apple music.

What’s the song about?

I wrote it on a rainy day and it was a very emotional moment; some of the

I was able to work through it with art and music and then putting it out there and having people message me and say hey I'm listening to this and its really helping me out and I'm having a really hard day. That's the goal. I think it’s beautiful to turn my experiences into something that can help other people, and that's the ultimate goal.

What advice would you give to a young person?

I think with there being much more social media - there is a real pressure to grow up really fast and I think try to appreciate being young and being free and all the things you can do with your life and don't feel you have to fit into the moulds you have been shown all the time. Make the most of Raglan’s nature and beauty.

Focus on what makes you happy not on what other people think you should do or what is cool to do. Hold on to your morals and who you are.

he annual Hurley Boardriders Teams Championships was held on April 13th to 14th in Whangamata in great waves.

This event is a teams event where each boardriders club in the country puts in a team of 5 surfers. Each team consists of one Junior surfer, one Woman surfer, one Over 40 surfer and two Open surfers.

Raglan Pointboardriders team included Theo Morse (Junior), Alani Morse (Women), Larry Fisher (Over 40) and Caleb Cutmore (Open) and Luke Hughes (Open).

The format is an individual competition for each division and then a tag team event. Points are added up and the winning club wins $1500 plus an all expenses paid trip to the Gold Coast to compete in the Usher Cup World Club Championships. Raglan Pointboardriders were victorious in 2022 and buzzed out on the Gold Coast experience so they, like every team, wanted badly to win the prestigious prize again.

It was great having our club president Luke Hughes in the team. He was unlucky in the Open men’s not getting through his first heat in a real tight one that could have gone either way. Alani Morse was in the same boat. She put a great performance in her first heat leading the whole way until the last two minutes. She caught the first wave of the set only to pull off the back and see the two surfers in second and third both get the best waves of the heat to knock her back into third and eliminated. Our other 3 surfers all managed to make the finals of their division. Caleb Cutmore getting 2nd in the Open men’s, and both Theo Morse and Larry Fisher finishing 3rd in their finals.

Coming into day 2 we were sitting just behind Keyhole Boardriders from Piha and Bayboardriders from Mount Maunganui. So now it was all about the tag team event and we had to win it to get enough points for the win.

The tag team is what makes this event fun and unpredictable. Each team chooses the order of their surfers and has 50 minutes to get a good score each and get back to the beach in time in order not to get a 5 point penalty deduction. It’s a beach start where you have sprint down the sand and paddle out. Surfers can catch as many waves as they want however your highest scoring wave counts. Basically you have 10 minutes each and after the paddle out you may only have 4-5 minutes to catch

It’s a pressure cooker format where mistakes can unravel the best of teams easily. Each team would need to progress through two rounds of this format to make the final four teams. Raglan Point Boardriders won their first and second round making it to the final. Keyhole Boardriders who were looking favourites to win by dominating the individual divisions self destructed in their semi final with a couple of their surfers taking up too much time which didn’t give their last two surfers enough time to find quality waves.

In the final the swell had increased considerably making the paddle outs very difficult with the limited time. Our team put in a valiant effort and tried their hearts out but could not get the big scores to take the win and finished 3rd in the final and 3rd overall. BayBoardriders took the tag team win and the overall points to book their place into the World Boardriders Championships to be held in January 2025 at the Gold Coast.

Our team was disappointed not to take the win but we were pretty content with our effort and solid performance. The team vibe and support was great to be part of.

spiring and experienced writers have the chance to spend a few days learning and working with some of the best in the business.

Planned for the three days of King’s Birthday Weekend on 1-3 June, Come Together – being held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre – features a series of workshops and presentations from award-winning authors, poets and publishers which aim to encourage others with their writing, whether it’s poetry, fiction, non-fiction or fantasy.

Saturday morning, award-winning poet, writer and senior lecturer in creative writing, Siobhan Harvey, presents “Character Traits”, a workshop which will have participants thinking deeply about character and learning different ways to bring them to life on the page.

In the afternoon, writer/publisher Ann Neville and Tina Shaw – editor of the Bateman New Zealand Writer’s Handbook – will discuss the publishing process, along with the differences between independent and mainstream publishing, before two hours dedicated to writing in “The Writing Room”. This will be followed by drinks and nibbles with workshop attendees and presenters, and a short film.

The Whakapapa of Story: From essence to understanding”, which promises to be a personal reflection on the origin and place of story and its importance as a foundation stone of our own humanity.

More time is set aside for writing on Sunday afternoon, or – weather depending – an afternoon kayaking on the Raglan Harbour (for an additional cost), before wine and nibbles at The Wharf Restaurant from 6pm, where participants are encouraged to share their work.

King’s Birthday Monday offers “The Writing Room” again from 9.30am-1pm.

The workshops have a limit of 25 participants, so book early!

The costs for each day (except Monday) is $80 for one day, or $140 for both days, with concessions available ($60/day or $120/weekend) for members of the Raglan Community Arts Council.

At 11am, award-winning writer Tracey Slaughter hosts “Exploding Photograph: A workshop in ekphrastic flash”, where participants will focus on producing flash work inspired by an image, generating vivid and atmospheric lines using the sensory cues seen in a photograph.

Opening Thursday 16th May with short Melbourne film Spike the Surfing Dog followed by Dame Valerie Adams: More than Gold and ends Saturday 25th May with our Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards (RAFFA) evening held at the Raglan Town Hall. Tickets for the RAFFA awards evening will sell out with limited seating so get in quick! The evening provides a chance to walk on the red carpet and enjoy a 3-course dining experience whilst celebrating the winning films with our local film making talent.

Earlier this month I attended the Hīkoi for Hauora which was organised by Raglan Naturally and Raglan Area School. We walked around the three bridges then came together at the school for a performance by Rob Mokaraka. Rob’s story about his suicide attempt and journey afterwards was eyeopening, vulnerable, funny, tragic and inspiring but what stayed with me was hearing members of our community speak up at the wānanga that followed.

People spoke about their own battles and I was touched by the truths they shared and the tears they cried. These conversations can change the way we view our struggles and how we move through them. I feel grateful to be a part of a community that is prioritising this kōrero and doing it with so much awhi and aroha.

J

o Tweedie, a rising star in the vibrant 1950s pin up scene, is poised to take the stage representing New Zealand this month at the prestigious Miss Vintage Australasia pageant in Australia.

With childhood roots in Raglan, Jo’s journey into the 1950s-inspired world of vintage pin up pageants began with memories of her dad crafting elaborate floats for Raglan’s New Year’s parade and a passion for fashion.

“Because I was born on New Year’s Day, my Dad used to make a big float every year,” says Jo, now 25, who has vivid memories of parading through the streets of Raglan on a big pink castle for her fifth birthday and inside a huge purple shoe when she turned six.

“We won almost every year because the floats were incredible,” recalls Jo. For her seventh birthday, Jo was gifted a sewing machine and – with dreams of Paris catwalks and 1950s fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn – she’s been channelling her own creativity into crafting fabulous costumes ever since.

When she was just nine, Jo had her first taste of success as a 1950s pageant queen when she created her own costume inspired by Sandra Dee from the movie Grease as part of a rock and roll festival – and won!

“I had the tight leather pants and a white shirt and matching hair and neck tie, which I made myself,” she says. “I always wanted to be a fashion designer and then I put my little outfit together myself. I was so proud! Because I was quite an introverted, shy child, it made me feel very brave being on stage and getting recognition.”

Over the past year, Jo has been making waves in the pin-up community under her stage name Stella Moon, taking part in events like the Whangamata Beach Hop and Miss Deluxe in Auckland. Her incredible talent has not gone unnoticed as she continues to rack up accolades, including winning Miss Southern Belle in Christchurch for her Halloweeninspired outfits in October, the Best Dressed Gal at the Power Cruise Pop Up Photo Pageant in Paeroa, 2023, and the face of Frankton Thunder in Hamilton in March 2024.

“I guess I’ve caught the bug and I’ve been doing pageants ever since,” says Jo, now based in Auckland. “I love meeting all of the other pageant goers because the pin up community is really close in New Zealand. Everyone is really kind and encouraging, even though we

are technically competing against each other. I’m not a very competitive person so being able to have a sportsmanship around it all is really important to me. It’s a really lovely, wholesome community.”

Stepping onto an international stage Now, Jo is gearing up for her biggest challenge yet – heading to Australia next month to represent New Zealand in her first international competition, which will see her competing alongside contestants from Australia, America and Southeast Asia in Miss Vintage Australasia.

“It took a while for it to sink in that I was going to be representing New Zealand against all these incredible worldly pin ups,” she says. “I’m very excited that I’m going to be representing New Zealand talent and the positivity that comes from the pin up community in New Zealand.”

Jo is now busy sourcing lots of different fabrics to make the designs for her costumes come to life. Inspired by the reduce, reuse, recycle ethos that has informed all of her creations since her childhood in Raglan, Jo is committed to making sure all of her costumes are made as sustainably as possible – sourcing as much as she can from op shops and vintage stores.

“I love the idea of using vintage fabric because it has a story, it has a past life,” she says. “It makes it much more special, I think.”

She can’t give too much away about what she’s wearing when she steps onto the stage in Australia, but she can reveal that her first dress for the daywear section will be fashioned from a tablecloth, and the evening dress a pair of curtains!

So what would it mean to her if she came back to New Zealand with the Miss Vintage Australasia crown this month?

“It would be an incredible opportunity to encourage others to pursue something that makes them happy, whatever that might be,” says Jo. “And also to promote sustainability and conscious consumerism.”

Natalie Hi, I’m Natalie, and I’m all about nature, health, and helping people feel their best. It all started two decades ago when I dove into studying naturopathy because I’m passionate about the outdoors and everything related to wellness.

COFFEE ROA STING A GROWING NICHE INDUSTRY A BOUT TOWN

R

aglan Roast may be a name on people’s lips around much of the country these days but no fewer than three backyard roasteries are also thriving locally.

And each of the niche labels is proving quite a success story in its own right.

One – Coaster Coffee – is concocted within a Raglan West garage where longtime local Malcolm Hutt has a few large, shiny roasting machines resembling robots from an alien planet vying for space with his not insignificant record collection toward the back of the building.

He sees a symmetry in his twin loves for coffee and music.

“Both require timing, groove and vibe,” he insists.

And neither is a new interest for Malcolm, who’s been involved in the coffee industry for nearly 27 years.

In fact he and Raglan Roast’s Tony Bruce together opened Volcom Lane’s ‘hole in the wall’ in early 2000, using beans from Rocket Coffee Roasters in Hamilton where Malcolm – a onetime chef – worked as a barista, brewing up around 200 cups of coffee a day.

“I got good at it,” he told the Local Rag, admitting he received an ‘outstanding barista’ award as voted in 2001 by his peers in hospitality.

With Malcolm’s passion for all things coffee he also learnt how to service the machines, at the same time training baristas and refining his craft.

Now he’s out on his own – a one-man band in an unassuming garage, ordering and roasting beans, bagging and distributing them locally and online while also working as a coffee machine technician around the Waikato. “Coffee is part of the fabric of my life,” he reckons.

Rata Miller.

Rata Miller is “pretty much” a one-man band too, and passionate about the Miller’s brand of coffee created by his father in Auckland way back in 1987. He roasts from a converted container – in a cafe called the Garden Club – at Nau Mai business park on Raglan’s outskirts.

Morning Glory Coffee Co, by contrast, has grown from a one-man band to a point where owner Paul Peterson can now proudly say he’s created jobs for six people in the community.

His wife Alicia helps with the website, social media and distribution of the product. They set their shop up at Nau Mai a few years ago and had “a steady flow of coffee-drinking enthusiasts”, says Rata, but the challenges of Covid saw the business close for a time.

Now it’s open again, with the addition of a 10kg Petroncini hot air roaster imported from Italy which has allowed Rata not only to brew coffee for appreciative customers but also to roast Miller’s espresso blend of beans.

“It’s a small town, not a huge market,” he says of the move to diversify and get his coffee out there – in and beyond Raglan – as quickly as possible while at its best. Coffee is ageing as soon as it’s roasted, Rata explains, so roasting two mornings a week ensures the product is delivered fresh both locally and online.

Customers also get to see – and smell – this process for themselves, which adds another dimension to Rata’s boutique roastery.

And 50 cents from every kilo bag of coffee sold goes to local conservation group the Karioi Project.

Like Malcolm, Paul began by roasting beans in his garage, but subsequently shifted his operation from Flax Cove to a small shed downtown behind Indi’s Cafe, which also sells the brew.

However, his roasting process outgrew the shed and was moved recently to a basic black barn opposite Te Mata School grounds. Indi’s remains an outlet but Paul also has his distinctive yellow coffee cart in town and at events such as Raglan’s monthly creative market.

Paul says he made a conscious decision early on – after initially working at the busy Te Uku Roast

Office – that he’d be a small boutique coffee roaster producing “100% organic and ethically traded coffee”.

So after travelling to Indonesia and establishing connections with small-scale coffee farmers he now trades directly, visiting their plantations regularly and buying beans by the pallet each time for his specialty roast. It feels good to “represent the little guy”, he reckons.

Says Rata of his fellow aficionados: “There’s a lot of symmetry between the three of us.”

We basically observe the same etiquette in delivering fresh, high quality coffee.

And a thriving coffee culture ultimately stimulates good social interaction within the community, he believes.

A

fresh-faced New Zealand Junior Surfing Team is about to touch down in El Salvador ready to tackle the World Junior Championship this week, the team including eight new faces amongst the country’s twelve top junior surfers.

The New Zealand Junior Surfing Team is competing at the 2024 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship being held in Surf City, El Salvador.

Leading the way for the Kiwis are the 4 groms who are no strangers to ISA Competition. In the Under 18 Boys, it is Spencer Rowson who makes his 3rd straight appearance in as many years, looking to better his 25th place finish from 2023, he looks forward to putting his experience at the infamous la Bocana in to practise.

Along side him will be first time team member Taimana Marupo and Tai Murphy, Marupo earning his place on the team as 2024 National champion and Murphy as ratings leader in the 2024 NZ Grom Series, both surfers will look to put on their best displays as they battle the worlds best in front of the biggest audience in junior surfing.

An entirely new trio joins the team in the Under 18 Girls division with Sophia Brock (Mnt), Ariana Walker (Mnt) and Poppy Arkle of Piha. These young ladies have shown dedication and skill levels beyond their years with Brock taking the title at the most recent Te Kaika South Island Champs as well as multiple finals berths throughout the season.

Arkle also joins the team for the first time. Hailing from Piha she is no stranger to powerful waves and with multiple final finishes throughout the season she is looking for a great result at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.

Ariana Walker from Mount Maunganui also steps up to the plate in the Under 18s as the team’s 3rd surfer.

With consistent results all season she will be one to watch once competition gets underway in just a few days’ time.

In the Under 16 Division, it is returning team member Alexis Owen who leads the pack after an astonishing 6 from 8 titles this season. Seemingly unstoppable, Owen will look to better his 33rd place finish from 2023.

Benji Lowen who resides in Australia will join the kiwi team for the first time. Originally from Christchurch Lowen earnt his place with a dominant display at the Nationals eventually being crowned the 2024 National Champ for the Under 16 boys. Harrison Biddle of Whangamata joins the team off the back of a stellar season with multiple heat wins and finals finishes.

It is the Under 16 Girls division that sees the most experience come into play with Alani Morse and Lola

Groube back for another year at the ISA World Junior Champs. Morse comes off a great build up to the event which has seen her win the Under 16 Girls National Champion title as well as a consistent run of finals throughout the year. She will look to better a 37th place finish from 2023 whilst Groube, who was the star of the New Zealand team in 2023 placed 19th. With multiple titles to her name, her performances this season bode well for an excellent World Junior Champs campaign.

Rounding out the team will be Northlands super star Indi Lee Ruddell. With a convincing win in the final event of the Billabong Grom Series and a consistent run of performances leading up to the event, the young northland star will look to make the most of her first opportunity to represent Aotearoa and Te Tai Tokerau at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.

The team will compete at the 2024 ISA World Junior Championship being held in Surf City, El Salvador from the 3-12 May. In 2023 the New Zealand Team placed tenth overall.

The championship is the largest junior surfing event in the world playing host to over 340 surfers from 44 nations in 2024.

n 2013, locals and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the opening of Raglan Museum’s permanent surfing exhibition. Dr Patrick Day, President, welcomed everyone and outlined the development of the idea for the exhibition, and the history of surfing in Raglan.

The surfing exhibition is a reflection of the great significance that surfing has to Raglan, both culturally and economically.

It was made possible by an initial donation of $20,000 from the Gallagher group, allowing for the professional

display of a huge variety of loaned and gifted boards from Raglan’s earliest surfers.

Some of the more unusual items to keep a look out for are:

Visitors can take the weight off and snuggle into a comfy couch to watch the Raglan Surf Explorer DVD on a large-screen TV.

hen somebody dies, the paperwork involved in the administration of a loved one’s estate can be daunting for the family, let alone it being a very emotional and upsetting time.

At Gina Jansen Lawyers, we are often approached with questions about estate administration so we put together some helpful FAQ’s.

Do I have to apply for a Grant of Probate to the High Court?

Someone has just died, and I am an Executor in their Will. What do I need to do?

If you have been appointed as an executor in a will, you should always locate the original will, and contact a solicitor straight away as well as notify the deceased’s Bank and Work and Income NZ. The executor’s primary role is to follow the instructions set out in the deceased’s will and ensure that all of the deceased’s assets are identified, all debts repaid, and the balance of the assets (called the residue) is distributed to the beneficiaries in accordance with the will.

Who is responsible for paying the funeral invoice and how does it get paid?

Under a will, the funeral costs invoice is usually payable by the deceased person’s estate. Once the Bank has been advised that the deceased has passed away, they usually freeze the deceased’s bank accounts, other than those jointly held.

Banks do allow funeral invoices to be paid direct from the deceased’s account if there are funds in it. If the estate does not have enough funds to pay the funeral costs, then the responsibility to pay falls to the executor(s), or the person

who signs the funeral home’s contract to undertake the funeral. Some people may qualify for a funeral grant from WINZ or ACC. The funeral home will assist the family/executor with paperwork for a funeral grant, but who is liable for

If there is a will, the executor will need to apply to the High Court for a grant of probate confirming the will and giving the executor authority to deal with the estate’s assets. If there is no will, but there are assets of over $15,000, then someone (usually the next of kin to the deceased) will need to apply to the High Court for a grant of letters of administration under the Administration Act, giving them authority to deal with the estate’s assets. Except where jointly owned, the title to the deceased’s home, and any other property held in their sole name, cannot be transferred to the executor/beneficiaries without first obtaining either a grant of Probate or a grant of letters of administration. If the estate is under $15K, an application may not be required. However, many people nowadays have Kiwisaver savings which can often be worth over $15K and which will require an application to release the deceased’s Kiwisaver funds to the executor for distribution to the beneficiaries.
