ast week Raglan hosted a significant Surfers Healing event at Ngarunui beach.

Surfers Healing is a foundation that organises opportunities for children with Autism to experience the power of surfing.

Local Ian Reeder is the man behind bringing the event to Whaingaroa and Jacqui from the Local Rag caught up with him to learn more.

How did Surfers Healing begin? Who was the founder and how did you become involved?

I have been surfing for 55 years and 33 years ago I met the founder of Surfers Healing, Izzy Paskowitz when he was a pro surfer. We became life long friends. Izzy married Danielle and they had a family and his son Isaiah was diagnosed with Autism.

Izzy was finding Isaiah challenging and while he was having a tantrum at the beach he decided to slip him on a board and paddle out with him. Instantly Isiaah responded positively and a ‘calmness came over him’.

He developed a bond with his son during surfing and from there The Surfers Healing foundation was born over 22 years ago. It has now currently running in 6 countries including Whaingaroa, New Zealand.

It was the perfect day for it and there was a large turn out. Apart from families who else gets involved and supports the foundation?

The Surfers are all volunteers and come from Hawaii, California, Puerto Rico and Aotearoa. In the US alone there are 12 yearly events where over 3000 children with Autism are taken out surfing. Surfers Healing is a non profit organization and all events are free of charge. This is our 4th year in Raglan and each year we are attracting bigger numbers.

I moved to Raglan 5 years ago and really wanted this to be a reality for this great town. Two of our surfers who travel the world with Surfers Healing went to the Raglan Surf academy: Levi Stewart and Morgan Munro.

I was impressed to see so many kids thriving on the experience and really confident on the boards. Why do you think it’s so effective for Children with Autism?

The experience of the ocean has a profound effect on these children and in many cases as I have heard from the parents, when the kids come in from the surf they are smiling and more elevated that usual.

Izzy says in a great You Tube clip called ‘Surfers Healing the Izzy Paskowitz story’ that the sensation and the smell of the ocean mellowed out his son’s behavior.

The power of this event is incredible for all who participate. Occasionally some kids are fearful of being taken out in the ocean but the experience of the surfers in handling this overrides their anxiety. After the first wave usually you see this beaming smile with the anxiety completely gone.

When is the next event in Raglan and if local children wanted to be involved what should they do?

We plan on this being an annual event and of course encourage anyone in our community with a child with autism to participate.

aglan’s famous open studio art trail is set to hit town in Easter 2020, and promises to showcase the best artists this side of the

divvy. The Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW), now in its 11th year, draws thousands of art aficionados from across the country who come to get a sneak peek into the creative process of our local talent.

“There’s something uniquely special about stepping into an artist’s environment and seeing how they have drawn their inspiration before committing to their medium,” says Nicky Brzeska, Co-ordinator for RAW. “Take Miranda Caird’s home studio as an example and it’s not hard to see how the mesmerising ocean view translates into her really iconic work.”

RAW is a self-guided tour, with visitors using the newly redesigned Arts Trail map to help them plot their own routes. March also sees the opening of the RAW Preview Exhibition at the Old School Arts Centre where ‘Talking about Climate Change’ showcase pieces and $200 artworks will be up for grabs. The themed exhibition is a first for the weekend, and the idea is to get the artists to really challenge themselves. “It’s a subject that resonates well in our eco-conscious seaside town, and we’re hoping it will entice a broader audience to come and see how it is interpreted,” Nicky says.

The 2020 event also sees the launch of the mentorship programme, where the experience and expertise of senior art talent in Raglan will be leveraged to support new artists. With 23 new artist registrations in the past two years, the team

thought it beneficial to help emerging talent in areas including pricing, working to a brief and art critique, amongst others.

RAW will run Saturday 11th April to Monday 13th April with the majority of studios open 10am until 5pm. The Preview Exhibition will run from March 19th until April 13th from 10am until 2pm at the Old School. There will be an opening night on Wednesday 18th March at 6.30pm for artists and their friends and family, and members of the Raglan Community Arts Council.

As an artist Jane feels lucky to live in Raglan, where she doesn’t have to travel far to find creative inspiration. Her passion is painting native flora and fauna as well as landscapes of Raglan and the Coromandel.

During the Easter Arts weekend I will be doing live paintings of my new watercolour and ink series which will be available for sale at the time.

Brodie’s work explores the ethereal and often atmospheric pockets of our landscape. It is always rich in technique, and conveys a relentless search for both form and essence through the use of oil paint.

My paintings reflect the indefinable mystique of Mother Nature, from the tender power of the human body to the space, grace and drama of rock, sea and sky. Languid lines, bold shadows and delicate, fleeting light reveal images that are both imaginary and intimately familiar, inspired by my surroundings and life experiences. I’ve always been inspired by Turner’s way with painting the light, which has led me to explore the excitement, colour, drama, serenity and seductiveness of the sea in my art especially around Raglan and the west coast.

I have harboured a passion for creating things ever since I was young, whether it’s art, architecture or design.

In the gallery you will also find the designer cases and eco portfolio that I designed.

The transparent layers in her paintings give a sense of lost and found, sometimes easily identifiable but often quite mysterious.

She creates a landscape both real and imagined, surreal and sometimes abstract, delving into the emotions that can arise when we surrender and move within an organic energetic flow.

New effects and “happy accidents” keeps her practise fresh and organic, and the more one engages, the more little hidden treasures can be found.

“When I’m in the painting zone, I like to imagine that feeling of great surrender...the silence, the soft blanket of mist, the light spray of water, and inhaling the fragrance of an atmospheric sky.

In that single moment, there is a connection between all that is, all we are, and all that could be”.

Geraldine’s style has been described as being poetic, ‘having a quiet eye’ she captures a mood and a sense of ‘being there’.

Sarah Steed is an artist inspired by the depths of the ocean - deep teal, azure blue, aqua, silvery schiller and turquoise.

She graduated from The Norwich School of Art and Design in BA (Hons) Fine Art Sculpture, but her love for stone, shape and metals soon turned her attention to jewellery design.

Sarah lives and works in Raglan and her jewellery range can be found in Jet Collective - the long established arts collective in town. She also teaches private and small group classes in ceramics and jewellery and welcomes enquiries.

Bronwyn Lowe has turned her passion for natural products in to a thriving business over the past two decades.

T

his month the Local Rag sat down with Bronwyn Lowe from the Herbal Dispensary.

Opening the shop back in 1996, The Herbal Dispensary has been a mainstay in the Raglan CBD for over two decades.

In what year did you establish the Herbal Dispensary?

In 1996, after three years of study, I graduated as a Medical Herbalist from The Waikato Centre of Herbal Studies.

Why did you decide to start it up? What was your background?

My interest in herbal medicine grew from working in various horticultural occupations. I was growing herbal plants for the local markets and garden centres when I learnt about using herbs more as a medicine.

When I graduated, few people knew what Herbal Medicine was and how to use it to enhance their health. My idea was to open a clinic with a shop to raise the profile of Herbal Medicine and serve the local community, and then go back to my garden!

It didn’t quite turn out that way but here we are 25 years later with great local support and a broad customer base from all around NZ I really believe in the power of herbal medicine to support people with their health and vitality. Having a background in horticulture, Herbal Medicine brought together my interest in both plants and helping others with their health.

Where did you first operate from?

I first started in the old doctor’s surgery in Wi Neera Street, with Dr Ian Marcus, who was very supportive, however the business soon outgrew those premises. I then moved down the alley on Bow Street where Raglan Roast now operates from.

As we continued to grow we moved premises along Bow Street, ever expanding, until ending up at our current location at 6 Wallis Street 8 years ago. This is a fantastic spot, allowing us to have our herb garden at the back, two clinic rooms, a dedicated dispensary, and organic food store.

How has the business evolved over time?

When I began, I opened with just $3000 worth of stock and only a small dispensary of liquid herbs. With community support, I was able to expand my range and move into areas such as natural skincare, organic foods, and natural health supplements. In the early days of the shop, catering to the gift market would entice people in to the Herbal Medicine side, however nowadays it seems to hold its own! When I began, it was just me, and now we employ between 8-14 staff depending on the time of year.

What are your latest developments ?

The community’s interest in reducing plastic use allowed us to install a successful Eco Store cleaning products refillery last year which has proved popular. Here you can refill anything from shampoo to glass cleaner! We are also working behind the scenes on a new skincare range, stay tuned!

Employing two full-time Naturopaths and Medical Herbalists last year has seen the

growth of The Nourish Clinic, where oneon-one consultations are available with our qualified practitioners.

What aspect of the Herbal do you enjoy the most?

Building customer relationships and of course bringing Herbal Medicine to a wide range of people and seeing and hearing the positive results!

How do you want people to feel when they come instore?

Welcomed, looked after, supported, and part of the Raglan community.

“slightly sad” Phil and Emily Meek will be passengers not drivers when they take the Raglan Shuttle up to Auckland next week en route to a new life on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The reversal of roles comes after the longtime locals handed over the keys – all four sets – to the new owners of the thriving shuttle/taxi service they started “from scratch” five-and-a-half years ago.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” Emily said before Monday’s handover to business partners Neil McLeod and Raymond Mudekuneye at Raglan Shuttle’s new downtown premises in Bankart St. “From day one the demand for a dedicated airport shuttle and taxi grew with us and our three boys.”

Emily confessed she was slightly sad to see the business go but excited for their family’s new start in Caloundra, which Phil reckons he fell in love with last year on a trip for his 50th birthday.

“It’s beautiful,” he told the Chronicle.

“A great place to live my side of 50 … good quality of life and lots of opportunities for our children (aged from four to 13).”

Phil all but grew up in Raglan, coming from Hamilton for family holidays in the 70s then settling here in the 90s. “It will be sad not to see the familiar faces any more,” he says. “I’ll be lost in the crowd at Caloundra.”

Driving the shuttles has been something of a perfect job, he adds, in that he could “talk and talk and talk” to their many airport, taxi and tour passengers over the years.

His parents used to give him a dollar to shut up back in the day, he laughs.

M

ade is the newest little gallery in Raglan with a passion and heart for celebrating the finest in local arts.

Born out of the demise of Matapihi Gallery, Made is the new home of clothing designer Lin Van Craenenbroek, painter Doug Ford, and beekeeper and jewellery designer Ush de la Croix.

Lin, Doug and Ush had been involved with Matapihi Gallery for many years and after it closed its doors last year they were keen to create their own little oasis of Whaingaora arts.

The artistic trio took on the lease in the new building between Supervalue and the Raglan Club on Bow St. They run the gallery on a volunteer basis, each bringing their own skill set and taking turns running the gallery; they are a dream team of creatives.

A former window-dresser, Lin takes care of curating the gallery, Ush is the social media guru and keeps her finger on the pulse of the ‘books’ and Doug is the penultimate gallery promoter and marketer.

As soon as you step in the door you know you’re delving into the arts of Whaingaroa, with local and quality being the key drivers behind their creative philosophy.

“We are looking for that quintessential Raglan vibe,” Ush says.

Also featuring at the gallery is local ceramicist Sarah Bing who is making

a name for herself with her colourful and quirky pottery creations, which are stunning artworks in their own right.

As well as having a space to display their own work, the three creatives are getting alongside emerging artists offering them gallery space and mentorship.

Some of the up-and-coming creatives include artists Charlot Solomon and Ataera Manu Davey, beard balm creator Joseph Solomon and the brains behind Raglan peanut butter PB23 Enfys and Alaia Hewitt.

“We really understand the challenges these emerging artists face. We want to give them a space where they feel safe and supported to show their work,” Lin says.

Made is also home to some of Raglan’s established creatives with Ocean Inlay jewellery by Yannis and Monika Petzold, surfboard carving by Jess Santorik, upcycled furniture by Jo Fairclough and raranga harakeke (flax weaving) by Marianne Aschenbrenner.

You will also find the exquisite Revitalist products crafted by Charlotte Ashton, the divine organic Juniper perfumes by Amy Lewis, the heavenly soy candles by Anne Carter and local writers’ collective Raglan Inkspillers books are also available at Made.

wenty-two years ago Rebecca Dowling opened the first fashion boutique for the woman of Raglan.

Unique in its style it became widely known not just in Raglan but throughout New Zealand especially for its use of beautiful natural fabrics and NZ made ethos. The brand started as Urchin but then onto Scintilla in 2002 when she collaborated with her sister Anna.

At this stage of life Rebecca is moving on to something new.

Jacqui from the Chronicle caught up with Rebecca to reminisce about the origins of the label and to learn her future plans.

You have decided to discontinue the brand Scintilla, What lead you to this decision?

Its been a really long and hard decision to make and a real process of letting go of the partnership between my sister Anna and I. We are going to continue to make clothes but under separate labels.

When did you start offering fashion to the Raglan community?

Gosh 1998 which makes me feel old but very privileged.

Tell us how you started out?

I started in my early 20’s from a love of opshopping. I would alter the op shop clothes and sell them at markets in Auckland. I then moved into making garments myself from fabrics bought at the wholesalers and I started the labels WILD and URCHIN. How did the brand progress? You had stores in other regions too?

When I moved to Raglan in 1996 I would still traipse up to the Auckland markets in an old van every weekend and after 2 years of this we decided to throw caution to the wind and open a store, Urchin on Raglan’s main street. It was such a success and many of us still call that time the heyday of our business careers.

When I joined forces with Anna we changed the name to Scintilla in 2002. We grew quite quickly and opened stores in Wellington, Hamilton and Silverdale, North Auckland.

Many will remember your local fashion shows, What is your memory of them?

OMG such great memories.

In the depths of winter all the local women would have a girls night out, women coming out of the woodwork for a night of fun

and debauchery! Molasses would be full of great music and local models parading , some stumbling down the catwalk with Patti’s great direction.

I’ve still got treasured photos of those nights.

What will you cherish most about the experience of establishing a label?

I will treasure the customers who have supported us all these years and have been so loyal, generous and kind about the garments. I am so truly grateful for your custom.

I will cherish having a successful business with my sister and feel so blessed we could work together all these years.

What sets your clothing apart from other brands?

In the old days it was all the details on the garments. The hand drawn screen prints of native plants, also the trims and satin binding. The Scintilla skirts and the boiled wool coats were the quintessential look. In later years it has been the beautiful fabrics and combinations used that have been the point of difference with simple flattering cuts.

Has the NZ made aspect been a challenge?

Yes it definitely has, with the costs of making in NZ always on the increase the market is so saturated with fast fashion and online stores. People have so much choice now .

What other challanges as a woman have you faced in business?

I’ve always had to juggle family life and business and I’ve loved the freedom of having a business where I can keep flexible hours and still be there when its really important for the kids. I guess Ive found as the kids get older they almost need more of my time with running them around so that’s been tricky but I also cherish the time knowing they are growing up fast.

And what now Rebecca?What other projects do you have on the go?

Well….. I am very excited about the next chapter.

I am starting a new label with local women designing the brand and doing the website and I will be selling on-line and having regular clothing sales from my workshop in Raglan West.

I will really miss having a shop in town but it will be great to still be able to sell from the workshop.

THE WHARFIES

R

aglan’s wharf at the end of Wallis Street is a place you must visit when you are in Raglan.

With glorious views out across the harbour and wonderful iconic buildings it is a great destination to spend a good few hours.

Approaching the wharf from the town area of Raglan you turn right at the end of the main street.

The most prominent feature you will see as you approach are the old Golden Bay cement silos which were constructed in 1967. These have now been converted into chic holiday apartments. A good deal

of the old wharf sheds burnt down in Apr 2010 but the replacement construction was finished in August 2011.

The Raglan Wharf is a working wharf, used by fishing, charter and tour boats as well as the Raglan Coast Guard.

There are also restaurants, artists, a pottery studio and boutique stores and of course the well loved fish and chip shop.

The highly anticipated September evening arrived and the tickets were successfully, albeit stressfully, secured with the savings of the last few weeks of work and Soundsplash 2020 had become a reality.

The camping crew were rounded up and tent construction skills tested. The outfits were planned (in a roundabout sense) and Friday, January 17, 2020 rolled around faster than I could have ever anticipated.

when my older sister’s journey began.

We started in the mosh pit at 3pm on Friday then returned to our fort at Fields of Joy for well-earnt refreshments only to head back to the main stage for a few more hours of sweaty dancing, jumping and shoulder rides.

After Sachi, the night continued.

We went over to the Outsides Stage for some drum ‘n bass then meandered back to the campground..

On Saturday night, Montelle299 and Peking Duk had the crowd pumping. Saturday was a blur of pure happiness as memories were made moshing in the crowd.

Sunday morning we were definitely a bit sleep-deprived! We lost track of the hours we spent dancing away in the night.

While we were definitely ready for a bed and a proper meal it felt wrong and incredibly sad to leave what was (and I hate to be this cliche) “the best weekend of my life”.

Organisers and security were truly the loveliest I have ever encountered in a concert environment. They were there for the “I lost my phone” chats, the random yarns and of course always willing to capture a picture for us for the “made it to the front of the mosh pit” pictures - always.

Personally, I would 10,000% recommend giving Soundsplash a go (if you can get your hands on tickets, which is becoming increasingly harder each year).

jay What skill are you learning at present?

Tattooing & Shop management Is there a formal training required?

In New Zealand there is no certificate required to be a tattooist. Instead we have apprenticeships in which you learn off of ‘master’ at their shop.

This is non-formal but an amazing way to learn and build relationships in the tattoo world. Although they are almost impossible to come across and you are required to work hard to earn the opportunity, which in turn makes the apprentice value the skill even more.

Who is teaching or supporting you?

Barbering Is there a formal training required?

Most people will go to some sort of course, for example Sam Park [who is teaching me] went to Mr. Barber in Auckland to get his qualifications.

Who is teaching or supporting you?

Sam Park, one of the best barbers in the Waikato, really great learning off him, he’s a great teacher and a huge inspiration to what I want to accomplish, he also happens to be one of my brother’s childhood friends, also everyone in the studio is very supportive. Big thanks to Vincent David for giving me this great opportunity in his shop. Everyone in the shop has a positive energy and looks out for one another second family vibe.

What time is required?

I am usually here around 2-3 days a week because I also work at Raglan Roast for the other days of the week. A barber apprentice course is roughly about 12 weeks.

Why did you decide to pursue this?

I have always been interested in barbering and planned to go to a course after school, then when Sam offered this opportunity I jumped on it.

What were you doing prior to this experience?

I was at school till the end of year 12 but it wasn’t really working out for me. After school I went on to work at Raglan Roast, and to this day I still do.

Vincent David is my mentor and I’m supported by everyone else who works alongside me in the studio. Vin has almost two decades of experience and has owned multiple studios, as well as having mentored some great artists, so I feel like I’m in good hands. Sam is one of my good friends and is apprenticing alongside me which pushes us both and we help each other to figure things out too. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and it’s great to be able to help each other out.

What time is required An apprenticeship takes about 3 years to complete. I work at the studio 7 days a week.

Why did you decide to pursue this?

I’ve been interested in tattooing since I was a kid, and always knew that a normal 9-5 wouldn’t suit me. I tried to do it on my own for a few years, sometimes guest spotting at Raglan Tattoo, until Vince offered me the chance to be his apprentice full time. So I took it and have not looked back since.

What were you doing prior to this experience?

I had a crack at uni after high school and decided it wasn't for me, continued to be a barista in a few places around in NZ, started a building apprenticeship, and everything just lead me back to art & tattooing.

Nothing felt right until this happened.

What would you like to do with this new skill in your future?

Make people happy and confident in the skin they’re in and just travel the world really. I’ll always come back here, and one day I’ll open my own shop and pass the skill onto the next generation.

You grew up in Raglan. How does it feel to be able to learn this vocation within your local community?

I would eventually like to travel and with this skill makes it easier to work all over. Hair will always grow.

Feels amazing to be able to represent my home town in the studio and tattoo everyone that comes through Raglan or are local. I feel like this is the only place that I’d want to learn the craft. Raglan doesn't have much opportunity, so to be able to learn my dream job in our little paradise is the best. Have to pinch myself sometimes.

You grew up in Raglan. How does it feel to be able to learn this vocation within your local community?

What do you think is the biggest challenge for young people when trying to decide on their career path?

Yeah I think it’s a cool opportunity to be able to learn this skill and even practice on my friends.

I think that having the pressure to go to university and jump straight into a career or trade is a tough thing. I think it’s best to just get a bit of life experience and have fun, then decide naturally. There shouldn't be a massive rush.

What would you like to do with this new skill in your future?

What do you think is the biggest challenge for young people when trying to decide on their career path?

I think that staying committed to one thing may be a bit daunting to some, also I think that living in Raglan can definitely provide some creative career options.

How is it learning alongside your brother?

Yeah it’s good, definitely enjoy spending time together after he has moved around a lot, so good to see each other progressing in what we are passionate about. It’s also rather inspiring watching him put in the hard yards and achieve his goals, and watching progress makes me push my self to accomplish my goals.

How is it learning alongside your brother?

To be honest it’s been great. Watching him step up and do what he has to do to be in here. He works hard and is here on his days off or when he finishes work. ULO’S KITCHEN LIMITED, private company with its registered office at Harakeke Place, Raglan, has made application to the District Licensing Committee at Waikato for the issue of an onlicence in respect of premises situated at 6 Wallis Street, Raglan, known as “Ulo’s Kitchen”.

The general nature of the business to be conducted under the licence is restaurant.

The days on which and the hours during which alcohol is intended to be sold under the licence are Mondays to Sundays (inclusive), 9am to 10pm.

The application may be inspected during ordinary office hours at the office of the Waikato District Licensing Committee at 15 Galileo Street, Ngaruawahia.

Any person who is entitled to object and who wishes to object to the issue of the licence may, not later than 15 working days after the date of the publication of this notice, file a notice in writing of the objection with the Secretary of the District Licensing Committee at Waikato District Council, Private Bag 544, Ngaruawahia 3742.

No objection to the issue of a licence may be made in relation to a matter other than a matter specified in section 105(1) of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.
