et's celebrate Whāingaroa Raglan's unsung heroes this National Volunteer Week (14–20 June).

From volunteer firefighters, Timebankers and Feed the Kids volunteers to marae ringawera (helping hands), the Raglan Lions crew, Raglan Rest Home helpers and more, countless people give their time to help keep our community thriving.

This year's theme, Your Year to Volunteer – Tōu tau ki te tūao, shines a spotlight on the many ways people can get involved and make a difference. In Whāingaroa, Go Raglan Jobs is helping connect locals with community groups, events and organisations looking for extra hands.

"It gives rangatahi the chance to explore different industries, make connections and build confidence in a supportive environment," Jami says.

Among Raglan's many volunteers is Margaret Huxtable, who regularly gives her time at Raglan Rest Home, helping run bingo sessions, providing

companionship for residents and delivering Meals on Wheels.

"Sometimes it's the simple things that mean the most," Margaret says. "A game of bingo, a chat over a cup of tea or simply spending time with someone can brighten their day."

The platform also includes resources for both volunteers and organisations, covering topics such as onboarding, workplace expectations, CV writing and interview preparation.

By promoting volunteer opportunities alongside local jobs, Go Raglan Jobs aims to support the organisations and events that make Whāingaroa a special place to live.

y the time most teenagers are finishing breakfast on a Saturday morning, 17-year-old Hinepehia Lee-Hohaia will already be deep in the Karioi bush, checking traplines high on the maunga.

The Ruapuke local is taking on a “Karioi Trap-AThon”, aiming to check 80 traps across the Karioi landscape in a single day — clearing possums, rats, mustelids, and the occasional feral cat, before resetting and rebaiting each trap by hand.

Hinepehia’s dad, Terence Hohaia, a biodiversity ranger with the Te Whakaoranga o Karioi Project, is helping map out the route.

“As part of going to Outward Bound, we’re asked to fundraise ourselves, so I thought trapping would be a good way to show the community how we can look after our maunga, while setting myself a bit of a challenge at the same time,” says Hinepehia.

While she admits feeling nervous about being away from home for 21 days — especially the solo component of the course — she is also looking forward to meeting new people and growing in confidence, leadership, and outdoor skills.

Hinepehia has been volunteering with the Karioi Project since February 2026, contributing more than 300 hours of conservation work this year alone.

“It’s going to be fairly challenging mahi,” says Terence. “Hinepehia will be heading towards the top of Karioi Maunga. I’d be pretty impressed if she can check 80 traps in a day.”

Three days a week she works alongside the team checking traps, controlling pest plants, clearing tracks, and supporting after-school environmental education programmes that connect local tamariki with the bush and wildlife on their doorstep.

Hinepehia decided to take on the Trap-A-Thon both to raise awareness about the threat introduced predators pose to New Zealand’s native wildlife, and to help fundraise for her upcoming 21-day Outward Bound New Zealand course beginning on 29 July 2026. The course forms part of the residential component of her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Kākariki Award.

“I hope Outward Bound will help me grow in confidence, leadership, and outdoor skills, so I can keep making a positive difference in my community.”

I

f you were to ask Ray Bailey what he does for a living, the town’s local barber would likely say, “Cut hair and talk shit.”

In a place like Raglan, that role carries more weight than it sounds. The barber’s chair is part confessional, part meeting place, and Ray has been at the centre of it since opening his shop in 2009.

Originally from Hamilton, Ray moved to Raglan in 2004, though his connection to the town goes back much further. Like many from Hamilton, Raglan was “the beach” of his childhood, and he spent his 20s surfing here with mates.

Initially, he was commuting daily to Hamilton for a sales job. When he heard a barber shop might be opening in town and then didn’t, he seized the opportunity.

“It was one of those decisions that I just grabbed and ran with,” he says. “I found a course in Auckland, quit my job and moved up there for 12 weeks.”

Back on weekends, Ray secured the premises he still works from today and Raglan Barber opened its doors.

“I love working in this town and being the local barber has introduced me to so many of its residents,” he says. “Over time I’m slowly getting to know them, one haircut at a time.”

In a small town like Raglan, work and volunteer roles blur, and people wear many hats. In Ray’s case, he’s the barber, a first responder, a sounding board, and a familiar face people trust.

He’s been with the brigade for 15 years and is now a station officer.

Balancing the barber shop with emergency callouts has become second nature. Most of the time, there’s just enough time to finish a haircut before heading out the door.

“I left John Hart (also a volunteer firefighter) with a mullet,” he laughs. “We got called out to a big scrub fire that was

R

aglan’s stunning coastline, worldclass surf breaks and the warmth and hospitality of locals were on full display during the World Surf League Championship Tour.

The atmosphere around town was upbeat throughout the event, with families, surf fans and visitors filling the streets, beaches and hospitality venues. At Waikere Manu Bay, crowds settled in with picnic blankets and deck chairs, while young surf fans lined up for autographs and photos with international surfing stars.

Waikato District Councillor Lisa Thomson says the event exceeded expectations, particularly given the short lead-in time required to organise an event of this scale.

"I’m incredibly proud of how our community came together to make this event possible," she says.

"From whānau, hapū and marae, there was a real sense of collective effort and pride. It was inspiring to see our tamariki and rangatahi engaging with the athletes and bringing their energy and enthusiasm to the event. Those are connections that will stay with our young people long after the competition ends."

Raglan Surf Co. owner Luke Hughes believes the event's success goes beyond attendance figures and sales.

"A lot of people will measure success by how long the event ran, but the audience it reached was huge," he says.

"We're likely see increased interest in Raglan for years to come. The atmosphere, community engagement and the experience created for both surfers and non-surfers made it a real success."

Harbour View Hotel owner Fiona Gates says while there was plenty of discussion and uncertainty leading into the event, the atmosphere and benefits it brought to Raglan quickly won people over.

"Raglan showed itself at its absolute best, and we'd love to see the WSL return again next year," she says. "Seeing businesses busy, locals embracing it, visitors connecting with Raglan and the whole town buzzing has been something pretty special to be part of."

Fiona says the success of the event was the result of a huge collective effort behind the scenes.

"A huge amount of work went in from the WSL team, local businesses, volunteers, organisers and staff. We're really proud of what was achieved together and grateful to everyone who helped make it happen."

Raglan Surf Emporium owner John Clapham says Raglan and New Zealand can be proud of how they were showcased to the world.

"It was one of the best contests I've been to anywhere in the world, and to have it in our own backyard was second to none," he says. "I think we've proved that Raglan can do this, and do it exceptionally well."

There will no doubt be lessons to take into next year if the competition returns, but the World Surf League Championship Tour has shown that Raglan can successfully host a world-class event without losing its laidback vibe.

A

nnika from Raglan Community Media caught up with local surfer legend Daniel Kereopa to look back on the World Surf League's event in Raglan. DK shared his reflections on what the event meant for the coast and the people who call it home.

Q: How did it feel when the WSL packed up and left?

DK: It happened really fast. One day the event was there, the next day half the structures were gone. We had our final karakia and then Manu Bay felt like itself again. The feeling of the place hadn't changed. We just happened to host thousands of guests for a couple of days.

Q: You were involved behind the scenes from the beginning. What was your first reaction when you heard the WSL wanted to come to Raglan?

DK: Honestly, I didn't believe it at first. Then I realised it was real. My role became making sure the community was heard. I wanted the event here, but I also felt responsible for looking after the wider community and making sure people were part of the conversation.

Q: What was the most challenging part behind the scenes?

DK: Communication.

Everyone wanted updates, but information arrived late. The whole community was trying to plan around the event. It took a lot of people working together to make it happen.

Q: Looking back, what do you think the event gave back to Raglan?

DK: The biggest thing for me was seeing the kids. They were smiling, running around, meeting their heroes. I kept thinking how much I would have loved something like this when I was young. There was a lot of excitement and a lot of positive energy around town.

Q: Was there a moment during the event that really stayed with you?

DK: One evening a cousin and I saw something moving across the water against the current. It made us think of Te Ātau o Rongo, a local taniwha connected to our marae. We started talking about the old stories and then, as the sun was setting, the waves

started arriving. For us, those stories aren't just legends. You got to believe in something that's beyond us.

Q: What do you hope visitors took away from Raglan?

DK: I hope they slowed down.

Raglan teaches you not to force things.

You have to work with the rhythm of the place. The surfers who adapted to that seemed to do the best.

Q: And what should remember about the WSL?

Raglan

DK: The whole community should be proud. Whether people loved the event or not, we showed the world something special. Not just our waves, but who we are.

W

hile the world’s best surfers battled it out at Manu Bay last month, another crew had quietly been keeping things running behind the scenes: directing traffic, helping with parking, or setting up infrastructure.

Many of those volunteers came from Christian Surfers New Zealand, a non-profit that combines surfing, and faith. During the World Surf League Championship Tour stop in Raglan, around 30 volunteers from all over the country travelled to Whaingaroa to help support the event.

For anyone who spent time at the Raglan Airfield park-and-ride over the busy WSL weekends, they were hard to miss in their hivis vests, helping move crowds smoothly between town and Manu Bay.

Considering more than 5,300 spectators poured into Raglan on peak days, the traffic and transport operation was widely seen as a success. No small task for a town with one main road leading to the break.

Christian Surfers national director Logan Mills says serving communities is simply part of what the organisation is about.

“Every event, small or big, needs a lot of manpower,” he says.

“We’ve got a pretty epic community who love to serve, and we’ve got crew around New Zealand, so we felt really honoured to come and support behind the scenes.”

Volunteers came from as far as Christchurch and Northland, with some helping from the very start of the event build all the way through to pack-down.

Logan, originally from Hamilton, quickly found himself putting his building background to use.

“We were there helping with fences, scrim, infrastructure, parking, whatever needed doing really,” he says. “A first-time event like this has a lot of moving parts, so we just wanted to be the backbone of help in the background.”

“The ocean is very healing,” he says. “There’s something about surfing that brings the child out in people again. You come back in from the surf just completely stoked.”

For local Christian Surfers mission leader Caleb Cutmore, having volunteers travel to Raglan made a huge difference.

“All the volunteers were from out of town as they needed to commit for most of the event which a lot of the local CS crew couldn’t pull off,” he says.

Christian Surfers started in Australia in the 1970s and now operates in more than 30 countries worldwide. In New Zealand, there are currently 18 local missions connecting surfers through community dinners, youth groups, surf events and volunteer projects.

In Raglan, the local mission runs fortnightly Surfside Surfers gatherings for high-school-aged kids, combining surfing and conversations around life and faith.

They also host regular potluck dinners to create connection in a town where people can easily drift apart despite its tight-knit feel.

“It’s about creating community that surfers can belong to,” Logan says. “We just want to love and

For Logan, surfing and spirituality naturally overlap.

That sense of joy and connection was on full display during a Christian Surfers community night held during the WSL event week, where locals and visitors gathered at the Christian Camp for food, and conversations; including adults enthusiastically throwing themselves into a giant tarp barrel simulator on surf skates.

“It sounds silly, but people absolutely froth it,” Logan laughs. “It’s probably the closest feeling to getting barreled without actually getting barreled.”

While the WSL brought international attention to Raglan’s famous left-hand point break, Logan believes the event also highlighted something else: the strength of the local community.

“Raglan is the mecca of surfing in New Zealand,” he says. “But it’s also a small community, and that’s what makes it special.

People care about each other here.”

He says Christian Surfers wanted to help ease some of the pressure locals had been worried about in the lead-up to the event, especially around congestion and logistics.

And although volunteers gave up long days of their own time, Logan says the crew felt they got something valuable back in return. “To give your time without expecting anything back is really special,” he says.

n Whāingaroa, food has a way of bringing people together.

Whether it’s swapping seedlings at Crop Swap, sharing surplus lemons with a neighbour, or lining up on a Monday evening for a warm vegetarian curry, kai here is about far more than nourishment. It is connection, generosity and community care.

Every Monday at 5pm, the tiny shop beside Raglan Refill fills with the smell of hot vegetarian food drifting out onto the street. Locals arrive carrying bowls and containers, chatting while they wait.

For Jono Hutson and Saras Howie, the couple behind Community Kai, food has always been deeply tied to people, culture and service. Their story begins in their own kitchen and flourishing gardens, and has grown into a weekly offering that many locals now look forward to.

Jono’s earliest food memories are filled with the comforting smells of his grandparents’ home.

“They had a thriving garden and were always cooking up something delicious,” he says. “There were chutneys, preserves and cakes, and my grandfather was famous for his bean curry while my nana made incredible roti.”

Those moments planted the seed for a lifelong connection with food. Jono loved helping in the kitchen from a young age and later worked in a deli kitchen after leaving school.

Yet he laughs when reflecting on how much his eating habits have changed over the years.

“I wasn’t adventurous at all growing up,” he says. “I used to leave the vegetables until last on my plate.”

Saras, meanwhile, grew up in India eating a purely vegetarian diet. Free food distribution from temples is a significant part of the culture there, as is the belief that sharing abundance with those around you brings good fortune to the wider community. Together, Jono and Saras have embraced those values, with gardening and growing food becoming one of their greatest shared passions.

At home, their cooking is guided by simplicity, intention and flavour. Fresh organic produce from the garden often forms the base of their meals, alongside aromatic spices sourced from Indian and Asian grocers. Saras’ influence can be felt strongly in the kitchen, where spice combinations transform humble vegetables into nourishing meals layered with warmth and depth.

“We believe the consciousness you cook with affects the food,” Jono explains. “Cooking with love really does make a difference.”

Living in Raglan has also shaped the way they think about food and community. Since moving from Muriwai Beach in 2015, the couple have immersed themselves in the town’s strong culture of sharing knowledge and abundance.

“We feel very lucky to live in our special community, close to the ocean and under the protection of Mt Karioi.”

“There are so many generous people here,” Jono says.

“We’ve learnt a lot about permaculture and growing nutrient-dense food through others in the community.”

He speaks warmly of local growers and gardeners such as Liz and Rick, who freely share seeds, taro plants, composting worms and practical knowledge. It is this spirit of manaakitanga — hospitality, kindness and generosity — that inspired the beginnings of Community Kai in 2020.

During the uncertainty and isolation of the Covid-19 restrictions, Jono and Saras began looking for ways to support their community. At the same time, they recognised that many people were struggling with the rising cost of healthy food. Their response was simple: cook one nutritious vegetarian meal each week and offer it on a koha basis.

The idea quickly took off.

JONO & SARAS’ TIPS ON HOW PEOPLE CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY THROUGH FOOD-BASED ACTIVITIES 1. Deliver or share a meal with a friend, an elderly person, or someone you know needs a night off from cooking.

2. Start growing kai, whether it’s in your backyard or in a container or pot.

3. Plant seeds or buy a punnet of seedlings, whatever makes it easiest to get started. You could even share the task with a neighbour or friend who lives nearby.

4. Visit the Whāingaroa Environment Centre for free seasonal seeds.

Attend the community garden working bee on Wi Neera Street every second Tuesday of the month for practical gardening. Crop Swap, held every first and third Sunday of the month, is also a great opportunity to swap seeds, seedlings, baking, or produce from the garden. The Raglan Gardeners group, who hold a wealth of knowledge, also meet once a month.

5. Utilise the Aroha Pantry in your community, take only what you need and give what you can. Fresh produce, canned goods & other pantry items are always appreciated.

6. Contact Whaingaroa Fruit Harvest, they can harvest and redistribute surplus fruit. Citrus is currently abundant and always in demand.

“It was so rewarding to see the response,” Jono recalls.

“There would be a long line of people waiting to eat our kai.”

After running for two years, the couple took a break before relaunching Community Kai in May this year. Some people are weekly regulars, while others are travellers discovering the town for the first time. Everyone is welcomed equally and encouraged to contribute what they can.

For Jono and Saras, accessibility is at the heart of the kaupapa.

“We believe everyone deserves to eat healthy food,” Jono says. “With food prices increasing, it can start to feel out of reach for many people. We want to show that nutritious food can still be affordable and delicious.”

Donated produce also plays a major role in shaping the meals they create. Bags of silverbeet, giant pumpkins and homegrown citrus regularly appear at their door, keeping the menu seasonal and ever-changing. Cooking this way encourages creativity while reducing waste and celebrating local abundance.

Some of the most meaningful moments come through unexpected acts of generosity. People occasionally arrive unable to offer koha, yet are fed regardless. Somehow, Jono says, the abundance always finds its way back.

“Sometimes it comes back as fresh produce, baking or simply kindness,” he says. “There’s a flow-on effect when people gather, share and take care of one another.”

Looking ahead, Jono and Saras hope Community Kai continues to grow and evolve while remaining rooted in the same values of service, gratitude and connection that inspired it from the beginning.

In a town already rich in community spirit, their weekly meal has become more than just dinner. It is a reminder that food made with care has the power to nourish not only our bodies, but the community around us.

Community Kai is served from 5pm every Monday at the Tiny Shop, next to Raglan Refill on Bow Street. Updates are shared on the Raglan Notice Board through the Eat A Rainbow Facebook page, as well as in the What’s On guides in the Raglan Chronicle and Local Rag Magazine.

We love this seasonal recipe, especially when lemons are in abundance.

These bliss balls are easy to prepare & make a great addition to kids’ lunchboxes. You can also substitute your favourite nuts or seeds.

½ cup cashews 1 cup desiccated coconut, plus extra for rolling

2 tablespoons maple syrup Juice & zest of 1 lemon ½ teaspoon vanilla essence Optional: 1–2 Tblsp warm 1 teaspoon salt water, if mixture is too dry

Method: 1. Place the almonds & cashews in a food processor and blend until they resemble coarse breadcrumbs.

2. Add the dates, dried apricots, desiccated coconut, lemon zest, lemon juice, maple syrup, vanilla essence and salt to the food processor.

3. Pulse until the mixture is finely chopped and begins to stick together like a sticky dough. If the mixture feels too dry to hold its shape when rolled, add 1 tablespoon of warm water or extra maple syrup and pulse again.

4. Scoop out heaped tablespoons of the mixture & using your hands, roll into balls.

5. Roll each bliss ball in the extra desiccated coconut until fully coated.

6. Place the bliss balls in the fridge for at least 1 hour to firm up before serving.

Depending on the size of your lemon & the texture of the mixture, you may need to add a little extra warm water to help combine, or a few more nuts if the mixture is not firm enough. Store the bliss balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months.

aglan producers took centre stage at this year's Outstanding Food Producer Awards, with two local businesses named champions in their categories among more than 430 products judged from across New Zealand.

Dreamview Creamery claimed the Dairy Champion title for its Natural Probiotic Yoghurt with Boysenberry Compote, while Raglan Food Co was named Dairy-Free Champion for its Vanilla Bean Coconut Yoghurt.

The Local Rag caught up with Dreamview Creamery and Raglan Food Co to hear what the awards mean to them, the stories behind their champion products and what's next for two of Raglan's most successful food producers.

the event. It was really amazing mingling and chatting to other amazing producers as well as a lovely excuse for us to get a bit dressed up. After driving back from Auckland... with only 3.5 hours of sleep, we were back in our gumboots and farm gear milking the cows the next morning. A beautiful juxtaposition but reality of it all.

Tell us about the process of getting nominated for the probiotic yoghurt.

We entered 4 products into the 2026 Outstanding Food Producer Awards. Via a blind judging and points system we received 3 gold medals and 1 silver.

The Natural Probiotic Yoghurt and Natural Probiotic Yoghurt with Boysenberry Compote received such high scores that they became finalists in the Dairy category. The Boysenberry ended up winning us the Dairy Champion. To be honest, we didn’t really know what to expect, we just popped them out there.

Tell us about the product. It’s obviously delicious! What are the health benefits?

Since all our milk is A2 protein this is an immediate health benefit. Then our yoghurt is filled with an immense amount of probiotics to help build and support gut health. With no extra nasties! All the berries are also locally sourced and fresh so the compote is simple, with no preservatives or additives. All just stripped back to simply natural goodness!

Can you describe the experience of the awards night and how it felt to be successful.

Oh we were all absolutely shocked. We had no idea. We all felt like some of the other winners before us were prepared and knew what was coming... So we thought, 'Ah, no, we would have been told if we had won something.' But no.. When we got 2 products as finalists and then ultimately winning, it was an awesome surprise. Jess stepped up to deliver a heartfelt, honest little thank you speech dedicated to our team and our cows. Mia was laughing as she realised afterward that's why the organisers had been subtly nagging her to sort the paperwork and booking for

the Champion Award in the Dairy-free category - a recognition that we are very proud to receive. It's a testament to the recipe and the care that our team has put into producing every jar that goes out the door. The awards this year saw 400+ entries across all the categories, so to be a part of the night was a great honour to all of us.

Being successful and receiving recognition is wonderful. All we have ever wanted to do was produce and deliver a quality, delicious product whilst keeping cow health and happiness, as well as sustainability and waste management, at the forefront of it all. So getting these ticks of approval make us all super proud.

How does this particular award benefit the product and brand.

How does this award impact the business and what benefits might you expect?

The exposure we have already received from the awards has been amazing. I love also that we can put the little gold and silver medals on our products. It makes us so proud! We’ve had an interview on the 9 till noon RNZ radio station because of the awards and have a few other media places keen to do a story. It truly is amazing for our little family business.

You continue to grow and evolve. Do you have further innovative ideas to add to the mix?

We always have new and changing goals whether it be streamlining and making the business more efficient, or new products being developed. We still have a goal of making cheese one day. Something we have been promising for a long time.

I also really want to get into opening up the farm for tours to customers or anyone interested. It’s something I’m really passionate about, educating (especially young people) about dairy farming and where their milk comes from.

We have to finish with why Whaingaroa is such a great place to run Dreamview from.

Whaingaroa is home, it always has been, and it always will be. There’s just no other community like it in my eyes. Without the support from everyone in the community, doing something like this would have been so much more challenging. I think the people in Raglan, they just care. They care about supporting local, our environment and our community. It’s so special.

Why was the Vanilla Bean coconut yoghurt a stand out at the awards?

We are passionate about creating dairy-free yoghurts that are delicious, high quality, sustainably packaged and full of goodness - we don't believe that consumers have to compromise on taste because they are choosing plantbased food. Our Vanilla Bean yoghurt is one of our signature flavours and it has been a crowd-pleaser for many years.

To create this yoghurt, we carefully balanced the taste of natural vanilla bean with our silky-smooth coconut yoghurt, and we are happy to say that our consumers continue to love it year after year. We had a note that the judges of Outstanding Food Producer Awards said, "This is awesome! Very well-balanced flavour profiles and well thought out. A Rarotongan breakfast on a spoon!"

Who attended awards night and how did it feel to be successful?

We are proud to be made in Whaingaroa, this has been our home since the beginning. Our founders Seb & Tesh first made the yoghurt on their kitchen bench and quickly moved into a shipping container in the centre of Raglan township to meet the local demand. Today we are in a purposebuilt factory just on the outskirts of Raglan; we send our yoghurts & kefirs all over the country from here. We have a great team of people passionate about lifting the vibe with delicious plant-based food, and we are proud to be one of the biggest employers in Raglan. All our systems and production processes have been set up to operate from this beautiful part of Aotearoa.

On Saturday I saw the smallest and youngest new players get fully-stuck-in to playing football, so if they have settled into the season then the rest of us probably have too.

This year our 100% volunteer football club had to dig-deep organisationally as the federation changed rules to support success in youth sport. We do not disagree with the theory, and we are loving seeing our players get more time on the ball. However, we had to adapt, pivot and plan with minimal resources and man-power.

What stops people from starting a podcast, and how do you alleviate those concerns?

The biggest barriers are time, tech, and budget.

While launching a new show does require effort, once you're up and running it can take just a couple of hours a week - assuming my team handles the rest! The tech side can be simple with the right gear and basic training.

I have recommendations for every budget.

Are there one-off or seasonal options, or does a podcast have to be ongoing?

The Chronicle caught up with Raglan's Kane Power of Precision Podcasting to talk about the podcasting boom, building audiences and why Whāingaroa remains the perfect base for a business with a global reach.

How and when did you get involved in podcasting?

I started my own show, Musician’s Map, as a passion project in 2017. With my background in audio engineering I quickly realised my audio quality was a step ahead, and I saw an opportunity to help other creators remove the technical headache. The business grew from there and as of today I’ve helped produce over 4000 episodes and had #1 charting shows in 18 different countries.

Why do you think podcasting is experiencing such massive growth?

It offers an unrivaled connection between the speaker and listener. It’s intimate, immersive and convincing.

I serve a wide variety of clients and so it varies based on their goals, but the impact is huge. My corporate clients report increased sales, wider reach, and stronger brand authority. Meanwhile, my independent creators are building community hubs, carving out industry influence, and in some cases, even solving real crimes.

It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow.

What does the process look like when someone approaches you with an idea?

It always starts with a casual chat about their goals, commitment, and budget. From there, clients choose the level of involvement they need. Most people look for guidance through the initial launch phase, followed by ongoing post-production support to ensure their audio always sounds pristine for their audience.

What are the real business or financial benefits of having a podcast?

While some shows do make money directly, the real financial benefits are long-term, cumulative, and come from building trust and reputation. Podcasting offers an ongoing audience connection that no other medium can match. It’s also an incredible content machine, meaning with some repurposing you’ll never have to worry about marketing content again.

By far the most effective shows are ongoing, weekly podcasts. However, many clients prefer creating short ‘seasons’ - a handful of standalone episodes, which lets you explore an idea without an ongoing commitment.

Because podcasts are evergreen, they remain an effective resource for years to come, as long as you keep them online.

What kind of budget would a business need to add this into their mix?

Budget shouldn’t stop anyone from podcasting, but businesses usually want a more polished, professional product. Fortunately, quality gear doesn’t need to break the bank, and I offer high-quality production options to fit almost any budget. The best thing to do is reach out for a quote.

Are your clients from Raglan or nationwide? Why does running the business from Whaingaroa work so well for you?

I started out working mostly with US shows, but as Kiwi podcasting has boomed, I've loved working closer to home. I have some fantastic local clients like Raglan Food Co and Raglan Boat Charters, alongside national names like DairyNZ and Bayleys. I designed this business so I could work from anywhere, but I chose Whaingaroa for the lifestyle, the community, and the nature. It’s the perfect balance when you spend your whole day on a computer.

T

here is something very Raglan about an outdoor bath. A quiet soak after a surf. Steam in the evening air. Hot water, fresh air and a moment to breathe.

For Raglan couple Anthony Belle and Ange Wallace, that ritual has become part of a remarkable comeback story.

Anthony went to school in Raglan when he was young, then returned here with Ange later in life. Like so many people, they fell hard for the coastline, community and slower rhythm.

Then cancer arrived. Anthony was diagnosed with two aggressive cancers, one Stage 3 and one Stage 4, and told to get his affairs in order. Life became small, measured in treatments, appointments and uncertainty.

At the time, Anthony was running Poolsmart, his above-ground swimming pool business. He was the hands-on maker who understood water, form and fibreglass. But when he became seriously ill, Poolsmart had to take a back seat.

So Anthony did what practical people do when the world becomes too big. He made something smaller.

In the factory, often with his chemo bottle in tow, he began working on an outdoor bath. It kept his hands busy and his mind from scary places but also reached back into something Ange loved: outdoor baths from her childhood, heated by fire and tended by her dad.

Over the years, they had talked about what that ritual could become: the ease of

an indoor bath, connected to the home’s hot water, carried outside.

Then, in the middle of illness, it became urgent. Star Baths gave them something precious to make together, a reprieve from hospitals and illness that had taken over their world. At first, it felt like a legacy project, something meaningful to leave in Anthony’s name.

Now, against all odds, it has become a life project.

During treatment, outdoor baths, ocean swims and beach walks became part of their rhythm. Between appointments, warm water outside gave them somewhere gentle and meaningful to connect.

They sought out Airbnbs with outdoor baths but often found the reality did not match the romance. Anthony’s bath was different: clean, easy, warm and beautiful.

That first bath became Star Baths, a Raglan-built range for gardens, baches and retreats.

When Anthony gained access to Keytruda, hope returned. His response was extraordinary. Both cancers went into remission, and stayed there. After Star Baths featured on Seven Sharp, interest came quickly.

Then came a cruel blow. Anthony was hit hard by side effects from Keytruda, the very drug that had saved his life. His body was suddenly under attack, leaving him on crutches and often bedridden.

During that time, Ange kept the wheels turning through her consultancy business, giving Anthony space to recover. Through

Anthony is back in the Star Baths workshop after 18 months, and even back making pools through Poolsmart. He has the energy of a man given a second crack at life.

A team of amazing locals helped bring the baths to life, and they are so pleased the first two Star Baths went to local Raglan families.

For Ange and Anthony, life feels precious, but also wonderfully open. They know their miracle sits alongside many other people’s heartbreak, and not every cancer story gets this kind of ending.

JOE WILSON: Joe is a local singer-songwriter who has been writing original material for over 13 years. Having been inspired by the likes of Jackson Browne, Ryan Adams and Bernard Fanning, he spent 5 years busking his way around Australia and the UK honing his craft as a songwriter and performer.
