t is only two months to go to get to one of Raglan’s most loved events, the Raglan Arts Weekend, held every year over Labour Weekend.

Over 70 Whaingaroa artists have been painting, illustrating, printmaking, sewing, photographing, sculpting, hammering, sanding, creating and prepping to ensure they put their very best forward for visitors over the weekend.

“Ten completely new studios to RAW, in addition to the Hatch, are bringing fresh styles and innovative approaches to the weekend to complement our existing established artist base, and we couldn’t be happier with what’s on offer this year,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW’s Co-Ordinator since 2019.

“It’s been a helluva year to get the necessary funding, and we’re just so pleased to be able to give this talent the platform it needs.”

New artists showcasing some imaginative styles include Reformation Studios who are creating beautifully designed pieces out of recycled plastic waste through cutting-edge 3D Print technology, and Chris Hoult who combines his love of fishing and photography with traditional Japanese printing techniques. Also joining RAW is highly accomplished painter Jo Gallagher, as well as sculptor Stuart Bridson, with thought provoking pieces and environmental themes in Waitetuna. Other new talented painters include Vanessa Mateja, Anastasia Collier, Thomas Alistair Elliott, Sean McDonnell and Robyn Westcott.

“What has been really cool to witness is how

many of our past Hatch participants have ‘migrated’ into the main event,” says Nicky. “This demonstrates that this incubator is working exactly as we intended – helping to provide emerging talent with a leg up into the art community. But going beyond that, it’s clear that lasting friendships and connections are being made – artists are exhibiting together and visiting each other’s shows, even in Auckland, and that makes us very proud of what we’ve all achieved.”

fter 16 years building iconic off-grid escapes, the family behind Kokomea is putting their paradise on the market Comprising a fully off-grid family home, Airbnb's award-winning LoveBus, the Treehouse and the Cottage, owners Guillaume Gignoux and Tara Wrigley are proud to offer this spectacular Whaanga Road property to the next kaitiaki (caretakers).

A bare block with no way in When Guillaume first bought his half share into the land in 2010, it was pine forest, native bush, and bare paddocks.

Life on the gravel side of Whaanga Road means off-grid living: no power lines equal no power.

"When we met in 2012, we spent a lot of our time on the property in a house bus," Tara says. "We just loved the peace, tranquillity, and having the whole place to ourselves."

Building a life off the grid As the relationship grew, the couple decided to build a family home for their growing family.

The house site itself is sheltered from the prevailing south-west wind, and positioned to catch sun from morning until evening. The four-bedroom home is entirely self-sufficient with solar power, a large rainwater tank, and its own septic system.

"Living off-grid was a huge learning curve," Tara says. "But it runs just like a normal house, we just don't get power bills. It's a relief knowing we've got power all year round, and that we're not affected when the town loses power in a storm."

From house bus to an award-winning stay With a family home established, the couple decided to list the house bus on Airbnb to bring in a little extra income. It was booked out immediately, with guests drawn to the privacy and seclusion of the property.

But the bus, with its composting toilet and dated interior, wasn't the experience Tara wanted to offer. Once the demand was clear, the couple fully renovated it, transforming it into the LoveBus, a calm space designed to make the most of its ocean views.

Over time, Guillaume and Tara added two more stays, the Treehouse and the Cottage, turning what began as a side project into Tiny House Escapes,

It also allowed them to buy out the other owner of the land.

Designing spaces they'd want to stay in When it came to designing each accommodation, the brief was simple: create spaces they themselves would want to escape to.

"There really wasn't much like this in 2016," Tara says. "We just designed the kind of romantic escapes we'd want to stay in ourselves."

With Tara leading on design, Guillaume, close friends and neighbours plan and execute the build.

"We've learned to use finishes that are easy to clean and that'll still look good years down the line.” The goal

with every stay, she says, is that each guest feels like they're the very first to experience it.

Each stay is completely unique. The Treehouse is built up in the pines, a tiny space with everything you need, and it's especially magical in the evening when all the little lights are twinkling. The bus is more spacious, and the cottage is perched up high on the property, overlooking everything. Both the Treehouse and the LoveBus have gone on to become two of Airbnb's most wish-listed properties.

One of the realities of living so remotely, no mobile coverage and no internet, has become one of the accommodations' defining features.

Guests return the same feedback again and again - that the stay gave them real time to reconnect with each other.

Guests are also drawn to the property's bush walk that winds down to a spot nicknamed the ‘Picnic Tree’, a favourite among visitors looking to

explore beyond their accommodation.

Nearby, a cedar barrel sauna with a glass window at the front looks straight out over the bush and the ocean, giving guests one of the property's most memorable views.

An established business "We've built a really great home and a really great business," Tara says. "It's taken years to get the systems and processes right, but everything runs the way we want it to now."

Today, Kokomea stands as a fully self-sufficient family home and one of the country's most sought-after off-grid escapes.

With the children now mostly independent, Tara and Guillaume are ready to enter a new chapter knowing they are passing on a piece of paradise that is not only a family home but a thriving business.

hen winter settles in, there’s nothing quite like a big pot of something delicious bubbling away on the stove or a comforting dish shared around the table. This month I’ve asked a few locals to share their favourite winter warmer recipes. Cosy and crowd-pleasing dishes they love to cook, eat and share when the days are cold and the nights call for something hearty.

JAKE’S SLOW COOKER BEEF SHORT RIBS Jacob Barham from Raglan Top Cut Butchery shares his family short rib recipe. He believes beef short ribs are criminally underused when it comes to slow cooker meals. They’re rich, packed with flavour and become incredibly tender after a long, slow cook. This recipe comfortably serves 2-3 people. Simply increase the quantities if you’re cooking for a larger crowd.

1–2 carrots, thickly slice Ingredients: 1 tsp crushed garlic 700g –1kg beef short ribs 1 sprig fresh rosemary 2–3 cups beef stock 1 bay leaf Olive oil Meat rub of your choice (we recommend Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Ahika.The.Tahi, Rum & Queue Rib Cornflour mixed with a little cold water, if Rocker or Rum & Queue Intensify) needed, to thicken the gravy 1 packet Maggi Beef Casserole Slow To serve, creamy mashed potatoes with Cook Recipe Base green beans, or steamed rice.

1 large brown onion, roughly diced Method: • Coat the beef short ribs generously with your chosen meat rub. Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan, or use the browning function on your slow cooker if it has one. Add the crushed garlic, then sear the ribs on all sides until well browned, turning every 30 secs or so for about 5 mins.

• In a jug, combine 2 cups of beef stock, 1 cup of water & the Maggi Beef Casserole Slow Cook Recipe Base. Stir until well combined.

• Transfer the browned short ribs to the slow cooker & pour over the stock mixture. Add the onion, carrots, rosemary & bay leaf. Cover & cook on Low for approx 8 hrs, or until the meat is tender & falling away from the bone.

• Carefully remove the beef & vegetables from the slow cooker & transfer them to a serving dish. Discard the rosemary sprig & bay leaf.

• Pour the cooking liquid into a pot & simmer for 15–20 mins to reduce & intensify the flavour. Season with salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste.

If you enjoy a stronger garlic flavour, stir in a little extra crushed garlic. If required, whisk in the cornflour mixture until the gravy reaches your preferred consistency.

• Pour the gravy over the beef & vegetables, then serve with creamy mashed potatoes & green beans, or steamed rice.

DARIUS’ TRADITIONAL GERMAN BREAD DUMPLINGS (SEMMELKNÖDEL) Darius Paul, from Germany’s Palatinate region, is sharing this recipe on behalf of Raglan Artisan Bread. It’s a hearty, warming dish that makes delicious use of leftover sourdough. These traditional German bread dumplings, known as Semmelknödel, are comforting and satisfying, especially when served with a rich, creamy mushroom sauce. They’re also a great way to give day-old sourdough a second life.

Makes approximately 8 dumplings (2 servings) Ingredients: Bread Dumplings (Semmelknödel) ½ loaf leftover sourdough bread, diced 150ml milk, warmed 1 small onion, finely diced 1 egg Butter, for sautéing Salt, to taste Preparation: Make the dumplings • Place the diced sourdough in a large bowl & pour the warm milk over it.

• In a small pan, sauté the diced onion in butter until translucent. Add the warm onion to the bread mixture, cover & leave to sit for 15 mins, allowing the bread to absorb the moisture.

• Mix in the egg and a pinch of salt. Knead everything together well until a cohesive dough forms, then leave to rest for another 10–15 mins.

• Test-cook a small dumpling by dropping it into simmering salted water. If it holds together well, shape the remaining mixture into equal-sized dumplings.

Tip: Sourdough has a firmer crust & denser crumb than a traditional bread roll, so if the mixture feels a little too dry to hold together after resting, add an extra tablespoon or two of warm milk.

• Gently simmer the dumplings in salted water for 10 mins. Do not allow the water to boil vigorously.

SHANNON’S ONE-PAN DUMPLING BAKE

This is one of those brilliant weeknight recipes that is quick, easy and guaranteed to hit the spot on a chilly winter evening. Everything comes together in one pan, with frozen dumplings nestled into a rich coconut and curry sauce, then baked until bubbling and delicious. Add some leafy greens, pile on your favourite toppings and you have a cosy, crowd-pleasing dinner with very little effort.

Serves 2-3 people as a main or 4-6 as a snack Ingredients: 1 x 400ml can coconut milk or coconut cream for a thicker consistency.

2 tbsp red, green or yellow curry paste 4 garlic cloves, minced 3 tsp fresh ginger, minced 3 Tbsp soy sauce or tamari 1 Tbsp oyster sauce or vegetarian version

RAGLAN

1½ Tbsp peanut butter, tahini or any nut butter 1 Tbsp sesame oil 2 tsp rice vinegar Juice of 1 lime 4 cups bok choy or other leafy greens e.g spinach, silver beet, kale, broccolini or finely sliced cabbage.

20 frozen dumplings, any kind e.g vegetarian, pork, chicken or prawn. (Gyoza, potstickers or wontons all work too) Optional toppings: Chilli crisp, crispy fried shallots, spring onions, sliced, Black and white sesame seeds, fresh coriander, thai basil, fresh mint, fresh chilli, sliced cucumber, roasted peanuts or cashews.

Mushroom Sauce 300g mixed mushrooms, cleaned & sliced 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 Tbsp butter or oil 50ml dry white wine 100ml cream Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Fresh chives, chopped, for garnish Make the mushroom sauce • In a pan, sauté the shallot in butter or oil until softened.

• Add the sliced mushrooms & sear over high heat until browned.

• Deglaze the pan with the white wine and allow it to reduce.

• Pour in the cream & simmer until the sauce thickens and becomes creamy.

• Season with salt, freshly ground black pepper & freshly chopped chives to taste.

• Serve the dumplings in a large bowl, generously covered with the mushroom sauce. They’re delicious served with a side salad dressed with herb vinaigrette & a glass of Pinot Noir.

For different variations, try adding fresh herbs, grated nutmeg or diced bacon to suit your taste.

Method: • Preheat the oven to 200°C. • In a deep ovenproof pan, whisk together the coconut milk, red curry paste, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, oyster sauce, peanut butter, sesame oil & rice vinegar. Squeeze in the lime juice & whisk to combine.

• Stir in the chopped Asian greens.

Arrange the frozen dumplings in a single layer on top of the sauce & gently press in.

• Cover the pan with foil & bake for around 30 mins. Check that the dumplings are cooked through before serving.

• Serve with your choice of rice & finish with your favourite toppings.

fter buying their Te Mata farm in 2023, local farmers Emma and Jason Turkilsen began looking for a way to bring customers closer to the source of their food. Three months ago, they launched a farm-direct beef and lamb business, offering traceable grass-fed meat delivered to customers, and stocked locally at Te Uku Store.

How long have you been farming for and what is the history of the farm?

Farming has always been in our blood. We both grew up on family farms before shepherding in various parts of New Zealand. We bought our Te Mata farm in 2023. Before us, it was owned by another farming family for many years, and we're proud to continue caring for the land while making ongoing improvements for future generations.

Tell us about your new business and how you decided to diversify your farm operation.

We wanted to reconnect people with where their food comes from. After seeing inconsistent quality in supermarkets, we decided to sell our own traceable, farm-direct beef and lamb.

Our cattle are predominantly PiedAngus, combining Angus and Piedmontese genetics to produce beef with exceptional tenderness, marbling and flavour, while our lamb is raised on our Waikato farm. Every box is vacuum packed, fully traceable and delivered directly from our farm to our customers, giving families confidence in exactly where their food comes from.

What have you achieved so far and what is important to you about your story?

Although we've only been operating for three months, our first launch sold out in just three days.

Since then, we've welcomed many repeat customers who now order regularly, and we're proud to have our products stocked at Te Uku Store, making our farm-direct range even more accessible to the local community.

For us, success isn't just about selling boxes— it's about reconnecting people with quality New Zealand farming and providing premium, grass-fed meat that families can trust.

What kind of response have you had from customers and the community?

The support has been incredible. The Raglan community has really got behind us, with many customers now ordering every month. We've received wonderful feedback about the quality, flavour, variety and personal service.

One review that really summed up what we're trying to achieve said: "I'd forgotten what real meat tasted like – so fresh and totally different from store bought. The sausages are just like I had as a kid. Very cost effective and it works."

Comments like this mean the world to us because they show customers can genuinely taste the difference. Building those relationships and seeing people come back time and time again has been the most rewarding part of the journey.

Do you have plans for expansion?

Absolutely. We're always looking at ways to grow while maintaining the quality and values that make our business special.

Our long-term goal is to process and butcher our meat on the farm before opening a small farm shop where customers can buy directly from the source.

We also want to continue expanding our online store and farm-direct deliveries, making it easier for more New Zealand families to enjoy premium, grass-fed meat while knowing exactly where it came from.

We're incredibly grateful for the support we've received so far and are excited to see where the journey takes us.

new local after-school care service has opened in Raglan, created to give families a reliable, friendly, and wellorganised option for care after school.

Raglan RASCALS has been established by local residents Kieran Hallgate and Thomas Cashen, combining experience in education, community engagement and digital systems to create a well-organised service for whānau.

Kieran is a team leader at Raglan Area School and has a strong understanding of school life, tamariki and the needs of local parents. Thomas runs Raglan-based digital agency Web Paste and has helped build the systems behind the service, making registration and booking simple for busy families.

Together, they have created Raglan Rascals to support parents who need care after school, while giving children a safe, friendly, and familiar place to spend the afternoon. The service meets all government requirements and has been set up with clear processes, strong supervision and a focus on care, safety and consistency.

One of the key parts of Raglan Rascals is the quality of support available each afternoon. The supervisor-to-child ratio has been kept really strong, helping ensure children receive the attention, care and encouragement they need.

Kai will also be provided, giving children something to eat after school and helping make the afternoon easier for families.

Parents can book a full term in advance to access a lower daily rate, without needing to pay the full term upfront. Payments are billed fortnightly, making it easier for families to manage. There is also a casual booking option for parents who only need care from time to time.

When it's raining, we like to play board games.

How do you help a new child feel part of the crew?

A

surfboard hand-painted by students at Raglan Area School has raised an impressive $3000 for the school's arts programme following a hotly contested auction.

Auctioned during the recent World Surf League event and signed by 12 WSL pro surfers, the one-of-a-kind pre-loved board attracted strong interest from bidders keen to own a unique piece of Raglan surfing history while supporting the next generation of young artists.

The initiative was organised by local Angela Massey, who says what began as a waterlogged old surfboard

was transformed into a vibrant piece of community art. The idea was then supported by Raglan Area School art teacher Levonne Fraser.

"I asked the kids to create something that was a positive response to the WSL – good surf vibes, colour, something that felt like us," Angela says. "When I saw it finished, I was gobsmacked."

The auction far exceeded her expectations. "In my head I thought, 'It'd be really nice to get $500.' Then the first serious bid was $500, it quickly climbed to $1000, and in the end Heidi Tidmarsh secured it for $3000."

While Heidi walked away with the board, Angela says the real winner is the

kura (school), with every dollar raised going directly towards Raglan Area School's arts programmes.

“Most schools are running on empty, so anything we can put into art programmes and creative spaces really helps the kids who shine there,” she says.

The main painters were Ryland Tansey Year 12 and Mika Kereopa Year 13, but Angela says that many hands added creative touches to the board.

“I love what art and creative programmes do for students who don’t always excel in other areas – especially

our neurodiverse kids. Art can be a really safe place for them.”

One of the first projects to benefit from the funding will be the purchase of canvases for the school's Level 1 art exhibition, Ko Taku Whānau Tēnei, which opens on Friday, July 17, at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre.

The remaining funds will be used to purchase art materials for junior and senior students and help fund a visual arts trip next year, ensuring the legacy of the community project continues well beyond the auction.

Hosted by Mayor Aksel Bech, the annual awards celebrate people whose service, generosity and commitment help strengthen communities across the district.

Raglan recipient Luca Grilli was recognised in the Making a Difference category, while Whāingaroa Weedbusters received an award in the Environment category.

“Our communities are built by people who choose to give their time, energy and skills to help others,” Mayor Aksel said.

“They don’t do it for recognition, but it is important that we take the time to thank them and celebrate everything they do.”

He said the willingness of people to support one another was one of the Waikato district’s greatest strengths.

“Strong communities don’t just happen. They’re built by people who step forward when something needs doing, and that’s exactly what we’ve recognised tonight.”

Luca Grilli recognised for making a difference Luca was recognised for his contribution to the Raglan and Te Mata communities through sport, volunteering and his work with local families.

He first became involved with Raglan Junior Soccer as a coach before taking on roles as team manager, referee and, in 2017, chairperson.

During a period of significant growth and change, Luca provided calm and thoughtful leadership that helped the club continue supporting local young people.

He was also a much-loved school bus driver for children in Te Mata and Ruapuke. Known for his warmth and genuine care, he created a positive environment for local tamariki through quizzes, games and end-of-year celebrations for whānau.

Luca has also played a key role in revitalising the Te Mata Tennis Club and supporting the community hall.

The award citation described him as someone who consistently steps up wherever he is needed, whether organising events or working quietly behind the scenes.

Weedbusters’ environmental work celebrated Whāingaroa Weedbusters was recognised for its volunteer-led work restoring native biodiversity across Raglan.

Now in its seventh year, the group removes pest plants, organises working bees and encourages residents to take action on their own properties.

Volunteers work across reserves, walkways, roadsides, marae and private properties, including

sites at Kaitoke, Lorenzen Bay, Wainui Bush Park and Karioi maunga.

During its 2021 Weed Blitz, the group removed about 200 cubic metres of pest plants. Volunteers have also controlled large privet sites, including work estimated to have cost council and community partners up to $140,000 if carried out commercially.

Alongside weed removal, the group teaches landowners practical skills, grows and shares native plants and supports cultural and ecological restoration projects.

Whāingaroa Weedbusters works with schools, marae, the Department of Conservation, Waikato Regional Council, Karioi Project and local residents to create lasting environmental change.

fter two decades running a multidisciplinary clinic in Wānaka, osteopath Liana Poole has returned to the Waikato and opened Breakthrough Osteopathy in Raglan. She talks about her approach to treatment, her clinical research and why living by the ocean feels like coming home Can you please describe your practice and what makes it unique?

I am passionate about helping people return to doing the activities they love.

My practice welcomes people of all ages and focuses on creating lasting change through a combination of cranial osteopathy, gentle osteopathic manipulation and shockwave therapy.

Over many years of treating complex presentations, I have developed my own techniques and research, which allows me to support patients more effectively in maintaining their long-term wellbeing.

What is your background experience in Osteo and where have you practiced?

Earlier in my career I moved to Wānaka, where I established and ran a multidisciplinary health clinic for 20 years. Living in such an active alpine community gave me extensive experience treating sporting and impact injuries. As the sole osteopath in my clinic, and for a time the only osteopath in the area, I worked with a remarkably diverse range of people and health conditions, from newborn babies through to older adults. The variety of people and conditions I encountered continues to influence my approach to treatment today. Since returning to the Waikato, I've been practising in Raglan and Hamilton, and am now excited to have opened my own clinic in Raglan.

How does it feel to be back in the Waikato and what attracted you to Raglan?

It feels so wonderful to live close to the ocean and my family again. I used to drive six hours most weekends just to go surfing and eventually realised I was always happiest and most relaxed at the beach. Raglan has the perfect

mix of stunning natural surroundings and a strong sense of community. I love the laid-back atmosphere here and it genuinely feels like home.

Do you have a particular area of interest?

I am actively involved in original clinical research, with two main areas of focus: supporting young people on the autism spectrum and exploring human biomechanics. I am passionate about discovering new ways of helping patients, and this work has led to some interesting breakthroughs that I believe have the potential to benefit many people. I am currently preparing my autism-related research for publication with Osteopaths New Zealand.

What common conditions are you able to help with and what might be an unexpected problem that you are able to assist with?

Living in another active town, I see many people carrying the effects of falls, crashes and old injuries that they have simply learned to live with.

I am particularly interested in helping people recover from the lasting effects of trauma, whether that stems from physical injuries or significant life

experiences, so they can regain greater freedom, resilience and wellbeing.

Shockwave therapy can also be very effective for stubborn or long-standing injuries.

Something that often surprises people is that I also treat animals, including pets, horses and farm animals, using gentle techniques to support movement and wellbeing.

When not working what do you love to do?

I've been making the most of having such easy access to the surf, so I'm in the water a lot, either on my board or swimming with my dog Cleo - who is obsessed with the water also.

aglan band Abstract Fish Lungs is continuing a busy year of new releases, live performances and recording, with its debut album due out on Halloween.

The band released its debut EP, Tribute IV, over consecutive weeks in January and February. The four tracks, Beyond Regret, Fractured Perception, The Guilty and Broken Glass, were written and performed during 2024 and 2025, when original drummer Lily was still with the band.

Tribute IV is dedicated to Lily and the formative period the four musicians shared together.

Ethan Murray joined as the band’s new drummer at the start of this year, followed by intensive rehearsals to prepare their live set. The new line-up debuted at the annual Māui Dolphin Day celebrations in March.

Since then, Abstract Fish Lungs has performed at Nivara Lounge in Hamilton, The Yard in Raglan and several private parties. The band also opened

for Australian rockers The Hard-Ons at the Harbour View Hotel on August 1.

The first single from the band’s debut album, The Bleak Midwinter, was released at the beginning of August. A new single will follow each month ahead of the album’s full release on Halloween.

The next track, The Dark Passenger, will be released on August 14.

The band is still recording and producing the album’s final songs at Porch Studio in Hamilton, fitting evening sessions around their day jobs.

Abstract Fish Lungs has also released a music video for the first single, Seagulls. Filmed entirely at Ngarunui Beach, the video captures some of the striking sunsets seen along the coast last month.

At 23, Marc Vincent Parkinson has already spent nearly a decade building instruments. Born in Kaikōura, he began making guitars at the age of 14 and now performs on instruments he has created himself.

Marc writes his own songs and moves across a wide range of styles, including funk, jazz, blues, heavy, alternative and psychedelic rock. His influences lean strongly towards the 1960s and 70s, drawing inspiration from artists such as Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Sophie and Leo are a partner duo from the United States who are exploring their musical style while living in Raglan.

They perform acoustic guitar covers of favourite songs and encourage the audience to sing along, bringing a warm and interactive feel to their set.

The group mainly plays ukuleles, supported by guitar, bass and drums, and performs an eclectic selection of songs chosen for the fun of it. Many were never written for ukulele and are unlikely to sound quite as their original composers intended.

Together, the three acts offer a varied programme spanning original songwriting, familiar acoustic covers and playful reinterpretations, reflecting the breadth of musical talent found across Whāingaroa.

aglan Boat Charters is looking for a new owner to take the established harbour tourism business into its next chapter.

Founded by Charlie Young in 2010, the business was later taken over and developed by current owner Andrew Stump.

The sale includes the 15-metre commercial catamaran Wahinemoe, established booking and operating systems, forward bookings, vehicles and equipment, along with the staff contracts with existing crew and skippers.

Owner Andrew Stump says the business offers a distinctly local experience, with cruises beginning in the heart of Whāingaroa Harbour rather than requiring a long journey to reach the scenery.

The business currently offers lunchtime nature cruises, sunset trips and private charters.

Andrew believes there is further potential for a new owner to grow the operation and develop stronger local iwi storytelling.

The Chronicle speaks with Andrew about the business and his decision to sell: Tell us about the history of Raglan Boat Charters and how it has developed in recent years.

Charlie Young started Raglan Boat Charters in 2010 as an extension of the Raglan Surf School and Karioi Lodge, which he ran with Erin. The early focus was the backpacker market and eco trips to the eel farm at Ōhautira. Captain Barlow (Fairmont Rawiri) has crewed and skippered the boat since that time, and as a Waingaro hapū member he has close ties to the harbour.

Over the years I've made a lot of improvements to the boat, projects I genuinely enjoyed, and I'm reaching the point where I've run out of changes to make. There's potential to grow further, particularly around developing the local iwi narrative, and I think someone else is better placed to take that forward than me.

What have you enjoyed about owning and operating this coastal business?

I came from an industry where it was very hard to please the customer. I've always been fascinated by the joy people get from being on Wahinemoe, from their interaction with nature, our crew, and sharing the Raglan vibe with everyone aboard.

What do you believe are its greatest strengths and assets?

The harbour is small enough that we don't need to travel far from the wharf to get that raw nature feeling. We don't motor for hours to reach the destination, we start in it. Our crew are passionate about what they do and where they live, and that comes through on every trip. We are a real fair dinkum
