The red carpet beckons for local Raglan filmmakers and actors – the Raglan Arts Film Festival returns to town in September and nominations are now open for the 2013 RAFFA awards.

Established in 2009, these prestigious awards celebrate the achievements of local filmmakers and actors, and will be presented at a glittering awards evening at the Old School Arts Centre on Saturday 21 September.

Nominations for the awards can be for movies of any length and genre, provided they have been made by filmmakers or actors from the Raglan Whaingaroa area (west of the deviation), or filmed within the local area.

In previous years, awards have been presented across a wide range of categories. Last year’s overall award - the Creative Force Award - went to Maryann Tuao of Groundswell Media. Maryann was recognised for her involvement in various film projects throughout the year, as well as for her support and mentoring of other local filmmakers.

This year, awards will be presented for Best Actor/ Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Director/Producer and Best Picture. Achievements in two open categories will also be recognized.

All nominated short films will be screened at the awards night and there will also be the opportunity to view nominated films on the opening night of the festival (Friday 13 September) and during an afternoon screening on Sunday 22 September.

The Raglan Arts Film Festival is organised by the Raglan Community Arts Council and receives funding from Creative Communities. The 2013 festival runs from 13 to 22 September, and will showcase an exciting array of films from around the world. Full details of the lineup will be announced in coming weeks.

Every year over 120 Raglan kids participate in these workshops which are run by the Community Clay Shed at the Arts Centre. So we are taking action to make sure the financial shortfall will not jeopardize the running of the Kids Clay workshops for the rest of 2013. Costs to run the workshops include tutor fees, materials, kiln use and administration; the extra funds are needed to supplement the workshop fees already paid by the families.

The great team of Ray White Raglan real-estate have offered to run a charity auction on behalf of the kids, this to be held on Friday 28th of June at 6pm at the Ray White real estate office in Bow Street. Items for auction include donated funky goods by Raglan businesses and a clay garden sculpture donated by Susanne Prinz.

Bow Street hole-in-wall helps baker make crust

Councillor’s Column Council has now completed its review of the long-term plan Year Two. Two hundred and seventytwo submissions were received with a number that either supported or did not support an increase in the landing charges at the airfield.

Ruapuke artisan bread maker Jenny Carter has set up a hole-in-the-wall shop at one end of a long corridor used by Trade Aid for storage, and from there is selling her trademark sourdough loaves directly over the counter three mornings a week.

Trade Aid’s Lisa Thomson said she thought the little pop-up shop – sandwiched between Trade Aid and Frocking Gorgeous – was “a really good fit, and it adds something really special to this end of Bow Street�.

Main route from Raglan to Kawhia restored The main access route from Raglan to Kawhia is now open with Waikato District Council contractors having cleared a major slip on Te Papatapu Road.

Recent bad weather and a major slip in the Raglan - Kawhia area last week closed the main route to through traffic and because the adjoining Kauroa –Kawhia Road is already closed due to a previous slip, there was no access to Kawhia from Raglan.

Drivers are still urged to take extreme care on the roads and are asked to report any hazards spotted on the Council roading network anytime by calling 0800 492 452.

Raglan Community invited to name new roads Raglan residents are being encouraged to play a part in the district’s history by suggesting names for their new roads.

Waikato District Council Service Delivery Manager, Tim Harty, explains that the district is preparing for significant economic growth, including transport requirements. As a result, the Raglan Community Board is asking residents to contribute names to an approved list which developers can use in future to name new roads in Raglan. “We’re keen for the local community to be part of the ongoing development in their community and we’re encouraging them to send in their suggestions with a brief explanation of their recommended name. We want the Raglan people to take ownership of this activity and be part of our future growth.�

He says there are a number of requirements to consider when providing suggestions. “We can’t use existing district road names and where possible we prefer not to use similar names within surrounding districts. They should be brief, preferably one word, and must be easily read and easy to pronounce. Strong consideration will be given to names which highlight the community’s history.� “For example we could reference the area or people from the area such as Maaori, early settlers, political, social or economic figures or perhaps highlight natural features, events or people. This does provide a significant list of possibilities.�

The proposed road names can be dropped off at the Raglan Office or sent to the Raglan Community Board by July 31 for consideration.

The council will shortly start the installation of the Whaanga Coast wastewater system.

This is a project that has been a long time coming. I have raised the environmental importance of this project in previous columns. There are still a number of properties that will have opportunities to join the system when construction starts.

Council has been able to hold the cost to those homeowners who have signed up to be part of the project and I would urge those who haven’t yet signed up to do so because costs will go up significantly once this opportunity passes.

Wastewater systems and their maintenance are significant environment health issues for council and a bylaw to improve standards across the District is being developed. Sections below 2500 sq metres do not meet the regional council’s standards for onsite disposal. Please contact staff for more information and costs to join this system.

Council continues to review bylaws and integrate the previous Franklin District into the Waikato. Two bylaws currently before council awaiting consultation are the water supply bylaw and the dog-control and policy review.

As I have mentioned previously the most significant aspect of the water supply bylaw is the introduction of water meters in Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Raglan. The rest of the district already have water meters.

There is still a lot of work to be done on this, including sourcing the best available meter technology and ensuring we have an equitable charging system. I am part of a group working with staff to deal with these and other related issues – obviously more to come on this topic.

I am sure there will also be some lively debate over the Dog Control and Policy review. I must say that our staff in Animal Constrol do a great job in a difficult situation.

Still to come is consultation around stormwater management as I have previously indicated. Council has budgeted significant money into this over the next ten years so we want to ensure we have a way of managing it.

Plastic, in many areas of the world, has become a significant and deadly part of the food chain. Humans have a heavy reliance on the plastics industry; it’s a cheap product that is incredibly versatile. Plastics manufacturing and use has grown exponentially over the last decade, as has our plastic waste. 225 million tonnes of plastic is produced each year and unfortunately a significant amount of that ends up in our oceans. Plastics have a huge impact on our marine environment and we want to motivate our community towards simple solutions to address it. It can be easy to despair about the impact humans are having on the planet, but the best fix is to find out what ‘good’ is happening out there.

Not only are they making a personal commitment to reduce their use of plastic - their efforts will also make a direct impact by raising funds to protect a locally threatened seabird. Green Party MP delivers clear message Raglan Chamber of Commerce

Gareth Hughes, Green Party spokesperson on energy and seabed mining, delivered a strong wake-up call to west coast dwellers and anyone who values New Zealand’s unique environment.

Why, he asked the 34 people who turned out for his meeting in Raglan last Monday, is this country prepared to risk so much in terms of pollution and reputation by pursuing current mining policies, when investment in renewable energy could produce more jobs and better financial returns.

The present government’s determination to mine at any cost includes issuing exploration permits, often in protected areas, for a variety of minerals of which the west coast ironsand is only one. These permits, Gareth pointed out, offer limited financial benefits but open our marine environment to potential disaster He expressed concern at permits being issued in marine mammal sanctuaries, with seismic exploration threatening the habitat of the remaining 55 Maui dolphins. He also pointed to the lack of publicly available scientific information about life on the ironsand seabed, now that research has been transferred from government to crown agencies who can declare it ‘sensitive’. Gareth said that NIWA is collecting information in a contract for TTR (Trans Tasman Resources, the company about to submit the first application to mine ironsand), but this is being kept secret so it can be ‘cherry-picked’ to present to resource consent hearings. He said he has also been “given the runaround” by DoC on recent increases in whale stranding statistics, which he wants to compare to records of seismic oil exploration.

Raglan Chamber - Do you REALLY know what we’re up to?

Raglan Chamber of Commerce has been around for over 4 years now - and intends to be around for a lot longer. We have over 60 members and our board members work tirelessly and voluntarily on behalf of Raglan businesses and the wider community.

Gareth went on to issue a strong warning on what might happen if current oil exploration leads to the development of extreme deep sea oil drilling in New Zealand waters up to 3km deep. This is “frontier technology”, where hot, high pressure oil is piped through freezing high pressure water, and where no one can guarantee against spills. He reminded us that the 300 tonne spill from the Rena cost $200m to clean up, while the 600,000 tonne spill in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in a shipping exclusion zone almost as big as the North Island – and it could takes weeks for one of only three relief rigs in the southern hemisphere to arrive to divert the flow and make capping possible.

While risks are huge, payback for New Zealand is not that great.

This government’s own modelling predicts at least 90% of profits will go offshore. The Taranaki oil industry

might add 3,000 jobs, a fraction of the 40,000 manufacturing jobs lost recently. The highly mechanised offshore mining of ironsand may produce no on-shore jobs.

The question was asked, “what is driving the mining programme?”

Gareth’s answer: “politics”. He went on to say it was “helping mates”, as with Warner Bros, Sky City and outlawing protest against the oil exploration.

While Gareth and the Green Party strongly advocate for New Zealand becoming “the Saudi Arabia of sustainable biofuel technology”, is there anything we can do in the short term? Yes, says Gareth, while the oil companies are bidding for permits and consents, the Green Party is putting in a bid to stop seabed exploration! Raglan man named Volunteer of Year

No-one who knows Bob MacLeod w o u l d have been surprised at finding him in the thick of Bob MacLeod things at the recent “Snow on the Beach” festival at Kopua Domain.

Whatever the event around town Bob’s invariably there helping out in one capacity or another.

And now the Raglan West resident has received official recognition for his tireless work in the community: the 63-year-old headed off a dozen other nominees to be named Volunteering Waikato’s Volunteer of the Year at a function attended by about 250 people in Hamilton at the weekend.

He won not only the Glenice Gallagher Trophy but also a hot-air balloon ride for two, a $100 Orca meal voucher and a $100 Bunnings voucher.

Bob – whose name was put forward for the accolade by the Raglan Community House -- is a member of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Service, the local Lions club, the Residents

and Ratepayers Association and the Raglan Community Board. He’s also on the local Civil Defence committee and is a Community Vehicle Trust driver.

That aside, Bob and his distinctive white van with its red and yellow stripes have become a regular sight around town as he helps out where he can. As the Community House’s

Chrissy Hodkinson was quoted as saying at the weekend, “there’s not much he’s not involved in in Raglan”.

Bob grew up in Raglan, where his father was the volunteer fire chief for many years, but moved away in his career as a telecommunications engineer. He retired – if you can call it that - back here a few years ago.

In turn this provides a flow-on effect to others in the community • Prosperous businesses can provide employment opportunities for locals which in turns means less people spending time travelling and money on fuel to travel ‘over the hill’ • Specific training courses for members run right here in Raglan based on identified local needs • Opportunities to meet other local business owners and to develop strategic relationships based on trust • Keeping members up to date with the latest developments that could impact business • Raglan Chamber is now a member of the NZ Chambers of Commerce which in turn belongs to the Global Chambers of Commerce. Collectively we can lobby local and national governments to effect change.

You might not be aware Many of the businesses that benefit from the Chamber’s efforts are not members of the Chamber and so may not realise how significant the Chamber’s input has been to the huge increase in tourist numbers this last summer. You might only be aware of what a good summer it was! Just think what could be achieved with more of Raglan’s businesses actively supporting us in helping us to support you. So… Are you a member yet?

We’re often told, “I’m not a member because I can never attend the events!” As described above, the events are just a part of what the Chamber is committed to. And even if you never attend an event you can still receive great benefits from being a member while contributing to the wider community.

We can all achieve more when we pool resources and work together. But as volunteers we do need support to continue to effect change.

Raglan Golf Club update Recently our Club hosted a ‘Round Robin’ vets tournament with teams from Kawhia, Ngahinepouri, Pirongia, and Stewart Alexander competing.

39 arrivals enjoyed our wellpresented local course, and despite a few showers it was a most enjoyable event. The ‘Coast’ team of Kawhia and Raglan won the teams’ trophy, and local golfer Steve Meddings won the overall best round.

These nights always prove popular, and for $20 per head, a meal, table v’s table quizzes with prizes for the overall winners, raffles, and other games, will make up the entertainment. Tables of 4-6 persons with a maximum of 6 at each. Phone Tony or Mike to book a table.

Sadly the firewood sales have finished for this year as all dry firewood has now been sold. The Club thanks the local residents who have purchased wood from us, and the Club vets who have put so much effort into this project. It is planned to increase the storage capacity and have more available next year.

Opinion: America’s Cup

One of the annoying comments parents sometimes irritate their children with is: ‘this time you’ve gone too far’.

I feel like making the same statement to the very grown up and respected persons who have come up with a 72 ft catamaran for the next America’s cup series. The more I look at pictures of it in action the more it seems closer to kite surfing than yachting. It is no surprise that a crew member has already died in trials and there have been other non lethal mishaps. And this is only in preliminary stages with the additional risk taking that will occur under the competitive pressures still to come.

Perhaps the America’s Cup has always attracted men or nations

with fat wallets and a risky dose of national pride, since the first race in 1851. It was 19 years before the first of regular challenges by Great Britain. All of these were won by an American yacht, and by convincing margins. In 1962 Australia entered the picture but had to keep trying until Australia 2 got a narrow victory in 1983. In 1995 our Black Magic beat Young America 5-0.

My greatest resistance to the 72 ft. catamaran for this latest round of challenges is the comparison with the ‘real’ yachts of bygone years, Their beautiful sleek profiles were an artists delight, even if they would be plodding marine mules against our modern, nearly flying, contraptions.

Maybe high tech. is the new beauty.

Volunteer passes The Friends of Wainui Reserve met at the Hamilton Gardens to share thoughts and reminisce over the sudden and Olly Seeley unexpected passing of a valued and long-serving member, Alwyn (always known as Olly) Seeley, who for seven years chaired Friends of Wainui.

Olly came into the group almost by accident, when the Raglan Ramblers were walking the shores of Aotea Harbour, where Olly was also walking.

At that time Olly was developing his 2.2 hectare Hamilton East section (now taken on by Hamilton City as the AJ Seeley Gully Reserve), which was then covered in trees and weedy regrowth. His ambition was to plant it all in native trees, once thriving in the area. That was finally achieved and the official opening was on 9 September 2012. By coincidence, the Friends of Wainui had also just started with restoring their 10 hectares. So there was a lot in common.

Olly joined the group and was one of the regular members, never missing a planting, or work day, often bringing trees. Although quiet by nature and having had an unrelated career as an ear, nose and throat specialist, Olly’s knowledge of nature, trees and plantings was considerable. In later years, one of Olly’s regular jobs at Friends of Wainui was lawn-mowing.

To mark that work, Friends of Wainui now plan to plant a grove of trees in one of the stream-side areas he mowed. With the current unpredictable weather, no schedule has been set for the work, which will be added to the other tree planting plans, already started. To complete the plan as effectively as the original 1993 volunteers, Friends of Wainui needs more volunteers. If you’d like to help, please ring John on 825 7866.

Junior rugby has positive start to season The rugby season is well underway for our nine junior teams. Grading is over for the competition grades and teams have been sorted into divisions.

Now the serious business of competing is underway.

The club is once again very strong with 140 registered players. This year some players are definitely leaving their mark on the Waikato Central Junior Rugby club competition. We have had a number of players selected to trial for rep teams. We wish them all the best.

The Hopuhopu Alex Henry Memorial 10 a-side Tournament was held on Sunday, 9th June. To all our amazing players who made the journey to Hopuhopu recently, you did yourselves and Raglan proud.

The weather did its best to dampen your spirits but all it managed to do was make all your supporters wish they had sprigs on their boots too. With smiling and somewhat muddy faces our 9 teams played with

positive attitudes and determination, the 6th grade, 7th grade green, 8th grade green, 9th grade and 12th grade made finals. The 8th grade green won their Cup final 15–0 over Fraser Tech white and the 9th grade drew their final with Varsity Taiohi 10 all to share the honours. Congratulations to both teams and their coaches Hayden Robbs & Jardon Wilson. The 8th grade black and the 10th grade also won their Plate Finals. Pit falls for pig dogs Winter is here, which for many locals means boars, boars, boars!

Urtica Ferox: tree nettle

With hunting dogs coming out of summer retirement, we are casting light on a couple of health hazards owners should keep in mind.

Urtica Ferox aka Ongaonga is NZs native tree nettle, and is one to avoid while traipsing through the bush. Both leaves and stems are covered in spines which inject a powerful neurotoxin into anything unlucky enough to touch them.

Symptoms in humans and dogs are very similar, and include burning, tingling sensations, numbness, incoordination, partial to full body paralysis, blindness, chills, abdominal cramps, excessive drooling, muscle tremors and difficulty breathing. It is said to have claimed the lives of many dogs, horses and even humans.

Speedy location of poisoned dogs in the bush is essential, along with prompt veterinary treatment. If treated in the early stages, prognosis is good with dogs returning to normal within a couple of weeks. Ongaonga poisoning is a significant risk to dogs and owners alike- we recommend never hunting alone.

Every year we get a few cases of an unexplained syndrome we call “pig dog myopathy”.

Its exact cause is unknown, as owners and vets alike have been unable to isolate a common factor among all cases.

Possible triggers are a lack of blood supply to muscles, lack of available nutrients to burn for fuel, a build up of lactic acid and muscle enzymes from physical exertion, contact with a toxic substance or plant/ algae, maybe a combination of

the above.

Symptoms range in severity and include sudden lethargy, muscle stiffness and pain, collapse and muscle tremors.

Blood samples show elevated muscle enzymes which the body excretes through the kidneys. This can severely damage them, or cause them to shut down completely. IV fluids are essential as they support the kidneys to flush out toxins with minimal damage.

Muscle that is damaged by the build up of enzymes and acids is often replaced by scar tissue as it repairs, resulting in less “useable” muscle and a decrease in physical ability.

Recovery is slow, with dogs being unable to hunt or work for months, and some never fully recover.

To reduce the risk of your dog getting myopathy we suggest feeding a good quality diet, a supplement, keeping them fit and in good body condition. Diets should be high quality and formulated for active dogs. A vitamin and mineral supplement provides the body with all the nutrients it needs for sustained activity. Keeping dogs fit builds endurance and trains their bodies to cope with long periods of exertion.

You cannot expect your dog to be a high performance athlete after sitting in a kennel all week. Daily exercise will build and maintain your dogs muscle strength, endurance and cardiovascular function.

If you are concerned about your dogs performance, or it collapses during or after exercise- bring it in to the clinic or call and talk to one of the nurses.
