aglan’s new youth hub is fulfilling an obvious need in the community, judging by the numbers of young people showing up in the first few weeks of it opening.

“It’s a dream I’ve had, to create an environment where the youth feel valued,” Bronwyn said. “They [the young people] actually can’t believe the community are so supportive.”

Known as Youth Connect, the hub was open every Thursday from 3.30pm till 7pm, when many youth at the hub were picked up to go to the Surfside youth group. The hub offered free entertainment and wi-fi, plus a meal, to local teenagers 14 years and over from any school.

Youth hub coordinator Rangi Rongo worked there every Thursday and adults from the governing committee were on call should any problems arise, but the young people would not feel it was their space if there were too many adults around.

“It’s supervised but we don’t parent RAGLAN UNION them,” Bronwyn said. “If they [the young CHURCH people] come, we’ll look after them but we’re not a babysitting service.”

So far, between 20 and 50 young people had been turning up each Thursday, which had far exceeded Bronwyn’s expectations, and a bigger Caring for the ones you love venue may be needed if numbers continued to swell.

If the demand was there, Youth Connect may open twice a week next term and be open during school holidays.

The hub had received the thumbs up from the youths, who were proud of their waterfront space near town, and the parents, who felt like their children had a safe place to go.

“There are kids who would have previously caused trouble round town that just run down to the hub now so they can be the first to be there.”

Youth Connect was funded through the multi-agency Social Sector Trials youth initiative, which involved the Police and ministries of Health, Justice, Education and Social Development.

“Unobtrusive” education was also part of the plan, Bronwyn said.

After the formal blessing and opening of Youth Connect on May 21, a workshop sponsored by the district health board taught youth about the dangers of alcohol, teaching the teenagers how to make non-alcoholic ‘mocktails’ and run a party without alcohol.

Another group had come in to talk to the youth about healthy food options, with a focus on the need to provide good sustenance when having a party.

The next thing may be to look at helping youth get their drivers’ licences, while the local coastguard wanted to do water safety education with them.

“We want to plug some education in there but we want it still to be a place just to hang out,” Bronwyn said. “I don’t want it to be an extension of school.”

While help had already come from various parts of the community to set up Youth Connect, ongoing help was needed to feed those coming every Thursday.

Bronwyn encouraged any members of the community to become involved by supplying food – whether it was toasted sandwiches, soup, a casserole or a roast – and make a positive difference.

Inventive chef serves up his own Matariki-flavour platter

aglan chef Tamati Edwards got inspired last week and served up the ‘Matariki Constellation’ on a plate – its seven components, he says, representing the seven stars of Pleiades which mark the Maori New Year.

He included traditional Maori food like watercress and smoked eel, mussels and kumara alongside purple carrot puree and pan-fried tarakihi in a colourful creation that’s now on the menu at Bow Street

Depot, the popular indoor-outdoor eatery best known for its tapas.

A modest Tamati told the Chronicle it was local entrepreneur Charlie Young who got him thinking about creating a unique dish to celebrate Matariki. Inspired to “give it a go”, he entered the inaugural Tino Reka te Kai Matariki Menu Challenge – a combined Waikato District Council and Waikato Food Inc competition.

The challenge was to come up with an exceptional dish using at least two ingredients grown or produced in the Waikato, and available on menus for no

more than $30.

Tamati’s done just that and thrown in a can of Good George limited edition India Pale Ale (IPA) to complement the platter, aptly named Matariki Constellation.

The overall winner will gain not only the kudos of creating the best Matariki dish for 2015 but also a trophy and prizes to the value of $2000.

There’s also a people’s choice award that will give the voting public the chance to win a dinner out and a weekend for two at Whale Bay’s Dreamcatcher Lodge Edith Symes

It’s amazing how easy it is to grow up knowing something but not knowing something. The reality of grace - God’s unmerited favour - was something that I could tell you all the right information about; but deep down the weight of it hadn’t hit me.

The funny thing is that if you looked at my background you’d have imagined that I should have had the concept of grace figured out more than anyone.

I grew up a pastor’s son, the oldest of three brothers, in church since I was in nappies. I learned the lifestyle Christians were supposed to live. And because I knew the lifestyle I grew up from primary school through my college years feeling the weight of expectation on my shoulders. If I did something wrong, it seemed amplified. After all I was the Christian kid who should be above reproach, blameless and flawless; the ‘God boy’. The result was guilt when I didn’t

measure up to expectations I felt. The Bible tells me I was ‘God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do,’ but I felt the more I tripped up the more of a let down I was to God. In 2009 I moved to New Zealand to spend a year at Surfside Adventure College. I met some extraordinary people as we did ministry and shared life together, and the more I spent time in this wonderful environment the more the weight seemed to lift.

What changed was that the knowledge of grace that moved from my head to my heart.

I am still created ‘to do good works’ but I’m no longer defined by my failure to do them. I am defined by God’s grace, ‘For it is by grace I have been saved, through faith - and this is not from myself, it is the gift of God - not by works, so no one can boast.’

The roof of the Marlin Bar and Grill was damaged last week when a fire broke out in the ceiling of the building.

Manager Helen Rowling was in Hamilton on Wednesday last week when she got the call that the Marlin Bar, on Wallis Street by the wharf, was on fire.

Contractors had been painting at the restaurant, which had closed after Easter, getting it ready for the planned October 1 reopening.

An existing potbelly fireplace inside the building was “experimentally lit” to help dry the paint.

Neither Helen nor the contractors realised the flue, which was attached to a firebox in

the ceiling, had been cut off at roof level and roofing iron put on top.

This meant the potbelly worked initially, but then created a fire in the ceiling.

The Fire Service was alerted about 4.15pm and three fire engines responded quickly. They were able to remove the roofing iron over the fire and put it out.

The fire caused damage to the electrical system and about 20 to 30 percent of the roof.

“Now the insurance have to ascertain what the damage is – it’s anywhere between $10,000 and $50,000, so

it’s put us back,” Helen said. “We can’t carry on ‘til we know how they want to proceed with the repairs.”

However, Helen was optimistic and hoping to still open on October 1.

“We just have to keep calm and carry on,” she laughed.

The Marlin Bar was owned by local farmers Susan and Noel Bamber.

They took over the restaurant in January from Ofa Akavola, who had owned it for 17 years with partner Kevin Bowering.

Year 9 enrollments at an all-time high The tide is turning for Raglan Area School. A new

school structure has meant many Year 9 students opting to attend Raglan Area School instead of the daily travel over the hill. This years’ Year 9 class is bursting with 28 students and another eight Year 9 students are being catered for in our specialist learning environments.

Bronwyn Haitana their main class teacher said that young people in the age group of 11-14 years spend a lot of time learning to relate to others in ways that are appropriate – they are critical thinkers, askers of ‘the Big Questions’ and move progressively towards independence. They have high expectations of themselves, are readily ‘coachable’ and enjoy stability in their learning programmes. Students in these years are characterised by ‘intellectual curiosity’ on which we need to capitalise.

“A rising tide lifts all ships.”

Rising Tides is a programme that began

this year to support the learning of students in Years 8 - 10 who have been described by teachers as ‘ready for something more’ than the usual classroom can provide. The main aim is to help capable students to become independent learners. “We believe that when we support strong and creative thinkers, the ‘rising tide’ of passion and skill will spread across all learners” says Bronwyn Haitana, deputy principal.

Each Thursday begins with new and interesting words, philosophical thoughts and puzzles. Solving cryptic crosswords and logic puzzles and debating social issues are solid favourites.

During term one the group investigated learning styles, multiple intelligences, memory and how to improve the efficiency of learning behaviours. In term two the focus has been on habits in our thinking and on how

change comes about in society. Each student has chosen a piece of everyday technology, investigating it to discover what the main influences have been on its changing form - including screws, saddles, locks, pens and surfboards. To support their learning they spent a day at MOTAT in Auckland in early May and they look forward to exploring further onto the community.

Next term the plan is to focus on how words influence our emotions and produce pictures in our minds – dissecting advertisements, reading and creating poems and stories, and attempting to conquer the local Word Café competitions!

s part of our effort to continuously improve our school, we asked last year for our community to answer a survey in regard to whether RAS provides a caring, safe and respectful school climate in which learning can flourish. We would like to thank our community for taking the time to answer these questions and help our school improvement and planning. As a whole the people who completed the survey felt that RAS has huge potential. They believe our school reflects our community and students are accepted as individuals. One person summed it up by saying: “I love the diversity and inclusiveness of the school.”

The survey identified that some of our school community have concerns regarding behaviour and the impact this has on the safety of other students.The other concern was the need for more

subjects and the need to create a more robust learning environment so that our students have success academically.

At Raglan Area School we are fully committed to addressing these issues highlighted by the survey.

Since the beginning of 2015 we have begun strengthening these two key facets of our school by implementing a clearer behaviour management system, providing more supervision at break and lunchtimes, introducing more subjects and offering more professional development for our staff.

By strengthening relationships and creating more positive home and school environments we remove barriers to engagement and improve students’ chances to achieve at school and beyond.

In addition to reducing plastic consumption on an individual and community level, many people are also working on large-scale solutions to the ocean trash problem. For example, last year The Ocean Clean Up, an organization founded by a 19 year old, unveiled a feasibility report explaining how realistic a plastic clean up effort would be using their method.While this method is controversial and highly criticized, it is important to trial different solutions until the right one is found.

The clean up method proposed uses natural ocean currents and winds to transport plastic debris toward a collection platform fitted with solid floating barriers to keep sea life out. The Ocean Clean Up proposes deploying the system for ten years, which will collect half of the trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.The next steps in the project are to bridge the gap between the results of the study with implementation options.
