Some even swam to the far side and back, well done.

A big thank you also to the Surf Life Saving Club and especially to one young man, who definitely drew the short straw, went beyond the call of duty and stood in the water so swimmers could use him as a marker, very commendable.

We would also like to thank Chrissy and her team from the Community House for organizing the snow, stalls, kid’s castle, sausage sizzle and Johnnies Radio.

Falling snow, chilly dip lure out a good crowd It snowed in Raglan on Saturday -- and children turned up at Kopua Domain in droves to feel the snow flakes on their faces, for many obviously a novel experience, or simply to toss handfuls of the stuff at friends or anyone else who ventured within range.

It was Raglan Community House’s second annual “Snow On The Beach” Festival but this was a grander affair, with 10 instead of seven tons of salt ice trucked in from Auckland this time around and also a snow maker on hand to create the effect that it really was snowing in the Waikato.

Organisers felt the event, which again coincided with the annual Mid Winter Swim sponsored by Ray White, attracted a significantly larger turnout than last year’s 200-300.

But as Tony Agar from the Community House observed – while still shivering from his dip in the estuary -- it was hard to provide an accurate figure as the crowd this year was more spread out, with the bouncy castle some distance away from the snowfield of sorts and the hot-food tent.

Saturday was a cold winter’s day in Raglan even without the snow but that didn’t deter a dozen or so hardy or simply foolish souls from testing the water temperature and generally flailing about near the Kopua boat ramp.

First though it was judging for best fancy dress, where a Community House team masquerading either as snowmen or scarecrows and a similar number of Meridian Energy staff inexplicably fighting for the crown as unicorns – their windmills wouldn’t stay on their horns, unfortunately – lined up on the beach for inspection by two selfdescribed paradise ducks, local identities Robbie and Pat Morris.

But the two teams were upstaged by local librarian Merren Tait and her bathing costume made entirely of plastics. A sign on the revealing costume revealed that Merren, who by no coincidence is about to see if she has the bottle to go plastics-free for a full year, was wearing “the average family’s plastic waste [in] one week”.

Unsurprisingly those in full fancy dress didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of making a race of the Mid Winter Swim itself as a bare-chested Phil Meek powered out, retrieved a ball released by a surf club IRB and raced back to shore to collect a bottle of wine and other winner’s prizes from Ray White’s Dave Hanna.

Remote monitoring of livestock, pasture growth, infrastructure and crops, aswell as spot-spraying of crops and weeds are some of the applications they proposed.

Daily monitoring of kiwi-fruit canopy for example can enable the use of nutrients like seaweed, or a small volume of spray at an early stage when plant health is observed to be weak, rather than when disease is widespread enough to be observed from below, and the entire crop gets sprayed with chemical. This minimises waste, contamination and can be safer than manual spraying in difficult environments.

A series of non-violent parenting workshops – tackling everything from baby and toddler development to sibling relationships and challenges with teenagers – are coming to Whaingaroa in July and August.

The workshops will be delivered by Ruth Beaglehole, a Kiwi-born educator who has spent her life at the forefront of the social change movement in the US. They are being organised by Te Mauri Tau – a kaupapa Maori community organisation with a base on Cornwall Road off Hills Road, from where a parenting support group will be run on Thursday nights while Ruth is in the country.

A one-day anger workshop at Poihakena Marae will help parents understand their frustrations and build skills to deal with stressful moments.

A series of evening “focus topic” talks will be held at the Old School Arts Centre on Wednesday nights. One of these will introduce empathy-led practice relating to babies and toddlers. In another session about setting limits for tamariki, parents will learn how to set and hold limits for their children through connection and compassion. And in the siblings session, parents and whanau can learn how to help their children have healthy interactions with each other.

Another session will help parents understand their teenagers better and develop strategies to stay connected.

And to help parents answer the hard questions children ask about bodies and sexual topics there’ll be a body image and self-care workshop to support children’s natural curiosity.

Also scheduled is an introductory nonviolent parenting weekend workshop at the marae.

And at the Old School a men’s group, or ropu mana tane, will provide a space for men to talk and connect with each other about fatherhood.

Te Mauri Tau programme coordinator Katarina Mataira told the Chronicle the workshops focus on what makes healthy families and communities. It’s about “the human element of change, and the struggles we have sometimes changing our own practice”.

The workshops support Te Maori Tau’s own development of a programme – Poutiria te Aroha, or Raising Children with Aroha – to promote non-violent philosophy and practice suited to New Zealand homes and communities, says Katarina.

She adds that “how to work empathetically with our children and how to give ourselves empathy” is at

the core of the non-violent parenting programme, funded for the past two years – and for the next three – by the JR McKenzie Trust.

Te Mauri Tau works collaboratively with Raglan Community House through the community violence networking group, which has set up a scholarship fund for those on low budgets to participate in the workshops with funding from Meridian Energy.

Ruth Beaglehole – founder of the Echo Parenting & Education Centre in Los Angeles – returns to Raglan, where her sister Professor Jane Ritchie lives, after previous visits delivering workshops and trainings in the philosophy and practice of non-violent parenting.

As a result of her visits and a three-month training course at Echo Parenting & Education in the States, Raglan now has two parent educator trainees of its own – Rosie Baysting and Wheturangi Tepania.

There’s plans now to run a “train the trainer” course in New Zealand, possibly next year, for 20 more people keen to become parent educators.

these from the Raglan Trust Hospital.

The meals can be popped into the oven in their foil container to reheat or can be removed from the packaging and popped in the microwave.

Tasty, nutritious and economical they might be the perfect answer to "What shall I have for dinner?"

Smart teen turns into a smart phone whizz Luka Brunton reckons he can “probably fix almost everything” to do with broken iPhones except water damage.

If a phone gets wet it short-circuits when plugged in, he explains, and is basically “stuffed”. But if it’s any other problem there’s a good chance the Raglan West 16-year-old can sort it.

The Hamilton Boys High student, who rates electronics as one of his best subjects at school, has been fixing expensive iPhones at home for “quite a while” now, he told the Chronicle – maybe a year or more. “People buy them, drop them, crack the screen and bring them to me.”

Green MP to speak in Raglan Gareth Hughes, Green Party spokesperson on offshore mining, oceans and energy will be in Raglan on Monday 24 June for an open meeting to discuss Gareth Hughes local issues and current policy on these matters of key importance to the Whaingaroa community.

Gareth entered Parliament as the youngest MP in 2010, and only one year later was named Backbencher of the Year by the New Zealand Herald. A graduate of Victoria University, his work in GEfree activism and later in climate change campaigning saw him make his mark in both Greenpeace and the Green Party.

He is now focussed on clean energy and protecting the marine environment.

On a personal note, Gareth, who lives in Wellington, is married to Meghan and has two pre-school children. Hobbies include boating, climbing and scuba-diving.

He is a lively and dynamic speaker, with a wide knowledge of his portfolios and a history of hands-on, mainly effective action. Come to hear his take on offshore mining, oceans and energy on 24 June at the Bowling Club. Doors open at 7.15pm with a chance to meet Gareth and warm up with coffee and cake before the meeting.

Luka orders any parts he needs from a contact in Auckland, who imports them from China. It’s where electronics giant Apple gets its parts from anyway, Luka adds.

It all started back when his own phone screen got broken, and the enterprising teenager looked on the internet to see how to open it up and fix it. Mates started bringing their broken iPhones to him and then, as word spread, there were “random people calling me”.

Luka deals now with lots of different smart phones, he says, charging about $90 to get them back in good working order within two or three days.

His mate Finn Jackson recently came on

board too with a bit of marketing expertise to add to the mix. While Finn’s picked up on some of Luka’s repair skills, the Raglan Area School student’s main job is to get the message “out there” through advertising.

Watermain upgrade underway Work on the Wainui Road watermain upgrade begun this week with Waikato District Council awarding the contract to Potter Civil Engineering Contractors.

Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery, Tim Harty says the watermains are being replaced due to the age and condition of existing pipes and the project will be completed by mid August.

Mr Harty says the safety of road users

and residents during the project is extremely important. “One lane of Wainui Road from Helen Place to Marine Parade and one lane of Whitley Street may be closed during the construction period and that could cause delays at various times. We would ask drivers in the area to take care and reduce speed over the contract period.”

The full work schedule involves the replacement of approximately 800 metres of water main pipes.

Seabed mining furor on the horizon Foreign owned company, TTR (Trans Tasman Resources) is due to lodge their application to the EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) to mine the seabed in an area off Patea in South Taranaki later this year.

TTR has made it further along the consenting process than any other past attempts to mine the west coast seabed in the 8 years since the Foreshore and Seabed Act was established, claiming that they have spent $35million to date.

This will be a precedent setting case that will, if successful, indicate to the international mining industry that New Zealand’s west coast iron sands are up for grabs. Inversely if TTR is unsuccessful through staunch public opposition the west coast would be saved for another day and New Zealand would strengthen its position as a nation who holds the well being of its

environment above economic interests.

Raglan, as a community, has been most active and outspoken in opposition of proposals to mine the seabed since the idea was first floated in 2005.

Over the years KASM has led this charge, diligently advocating for the inhabitants in and out of the water along the west coast.

Today, through sustained efforts the issue is again reaching into the consciousness of the wider New Zealand public and communities spanning the west coast from Whanganui to Muriwai are tuning into the issue and uniting in preparartion for this first application to actually mine.

Parking of spatial plan irks community board Raglan Community Board has a spatial awareness problem – it has complained it doesn’t know enough about the work that’s been done on a spatial plan for the town’s central business district.

A staff report to the board’s June meeting recommended that the plan, which has emerged from the ashes of the Raglan Structure Plan and its controversial variation 15 proposing high-rise development, should be parked until the outcome of the Raglan Land Company’s proposed private plan change for the Rangatahi Peninsula was known.

The report said the proposal, which could see up to 500 houses built across from the Raglan West causeway over a 40-year timespan, could well influence what facilities were provided in Raglan West and so change the services required in the Raglan CBD. It also pointed to a multilevel church-cumcommercial and retail development proposed by the Raglan Surfside Church at 34 and 35 Bow Street – properties currently occupied by the Matapihi Art Gallery and the church’s food bank – as potentially affecting the provision of commercial and retail space in town.

But some community board members were unhappy at the staff recommendation that work on the spatial plan should be delayed.

“It’s unfair on the community – we need to see what the ground rules [for any CBD developments] are now,” complained Bob MacLeod. He said the Rangitahi Peninsula zone change application “should be left out of it” as any decision was at least four years away.

Chamber of Commerce secretary Angela Williams, who was sitting in on the meeting, said chamber members were “really concerned about the lack of a structure plan” and also urged the council to get on with the work.

Community board members were concerned they had no detail of the work done so far on the spatial plan, despite it having already cost ratepayers $133,000, and asked council staff to report back with a summary of what their consultation with and feedback from the community was showing.

Meanwhile the board – disturbed at rumours the proposed Surfside Church multilevel development might be “all glass” – felt the wider community should be consulted over any visual impact on the town and recommended public notification of the church’s impending application for a resource consent.

Council planning staff are understood to have talked already with the church’s building consultant. One issue is the current height limit of 10 metres.
