This week the Chronicle caught up with Adam Black.

Who do you coach?

The open grade Piranha’s.

How long have you been coaching for?

This is my third season.

Why did you decide to put your hand up to coach?

I was a parent on the side lines for 2 season’s so I thought I would put my

hand up to help out.

What are the highlights of coaching a team?

Looking back on a season and seeing the growth of each player through the year is awesome.

What are the challenges?

Balancing work hours with practices can be a challenge but it’s all worth it.

What is you coaching style?

I like to be fairly strict and direct but reward hard work and team spirit.

Is it all about winning?

This is a hard one for me as I come from a very competitive background but this is not for every child so I really work hard to achieve a balance.

Was sport important to you growing up?

Major part of my school life and to some degree now too.

How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today?

This is massive, they learn to deal with frustrations from many different personalities and learn how to make it work for them as a team.

Best piece of advice you could give to parents?

Be there for your kids!!

Illustrator picks up another award The judges of the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards contest, which recognizes excellence in children’s literature, have spoken, and The Eel Hunt by Jennifer Somervell and illustrated by local Margery Fern, won a raft of awards including First Place in the Cultural Diversity, Best Cover Design and Interior Design sections.

“Winning any place in the Purple Dragonfly Contest is a huge honour because in order to maintain the integrity of the Dragonfly Book Awards, a minimum score is required before a First or Second place or Honorable Mention

will be awarded to the entrant – even if it is the sole entry in a category,” explains Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications, the sponsor of the Dragonfly Book Awards. “Competition is steep, too, because there is no publication date limit as long as the book is still in print.”

The Eel Hunt is based on a real eeling expedition in the early 1970s on the Manawatu River, where things did not go according to plan. The book includes educational material about the unique and ‘at risk’ New Zealand longfin eel.

One-time home is where the art is – over 20 of KT’s favourite oils

aglan artist Ken Thomas reckons his latest exhibition, at Rock-it Café, feels a bit like a homecoming.

After all, the 100-year-old former woolshed on Wainui Road was not only his studio and surf shop but for a time also his home before becoming the busy eatery cum surfwear outlet cum Tractor FM studio it is today.

In fact, says KT – as he’s better known around town – the walls behind the wooden tables and bench seating in one corner of the café are multi-hued because that’s where he used to clean his paintbrushes before mixing colours on canvas.

The corner now forms the backdrop to some of the 22 stunningly evocative works of art – most of them large pieces at around 1200mm square – now on display and up for auction the Sunday after next.

“It’s awesome being back here,” KT told the Chronicle of his old haunt last Thursday, a week into the exhibition. “It’s the best venue in town.”

He said he’d say that even if he didn’t have a history at Rock-it – which was also the name of his own surf label way back – because the place has a big parking area, a beautiful view and “lovely hospitality” with owners Sarah Kay and Rob Bailey in charge.

So why now for an exhibition entitled ‘Ken Thomas: A Brief History of a Painter’?

Because, he says, he has a good range of works going back to 1990 – hence the subtitle ‘22 works spanning 25 years’ – and

it’ll bring back a lot of memories locally.

The 58-year old has always had a passion for painting, along with surfing, and felt simply that the time was right to retrieve his favourite artworks from the large container behind his water’s-edge home in Smith Street.

Most of the oils haven’t been displayed since adorning the walls of the old Tongue & Groove cafe, now The Shack, on arguably the most popular corner in town.

Whittling down 80 works to 22 that “go together” to tell something of a sequential story was not easy, adds KT. “I was trying to get a little bit of each couple of years,” he explains of the predominantly Raglaninspired collection, which includes four paintings from this year.

KT has also strived to exhibit his most positive works of art – the “softer, more user-friendly ones” as opposed to those with a heavier, darker subject. “I wanted to make it a wicked exhibition.”

While the exhibition catalogue makes clear the paintings are “from the artist’s collection”, he’s come round to letting them go. It’s hard, he confesses, “but I’ve got to move on … there’s heaps of (other) stuff I want to do.”

And he has hundreds of preliminary sketches to hold onto, most of which were inspired by photos. A photo prompts his memory, he explains of his creative process.

“It reminds me of smells, noises, feelings.”

Once KT’s started painting he’ll put the photo aside and paint in oils pretty much from memory. “You can actually capture

the wind and the smells and the noise,” he insists.¬ “You can’t do that with graphic representation but this is sculptural. You can’t help but view it with heaps of feeling.”

KT works primarily on canvas he’s stretched and prepared himself with about five layers of paint. But sometimes he paints on bits of wood and frames the finished product. It’s a technique he learnt long ago, from friend and mentor Hadley Hodgkinson, to “loosen up” rather than become too precious about his work.

He describes his style as instinctive, with very little plagiarism. “I’m a heathen in the art world,” he quips of his qualifications, having only studied graphics and illustration in Australia back in 1978, followed by a year of fine arts at Wintec in Hamilton.

It’s the “passion of life” that most concerns KT, and he says his paintings are a reflection of that.

Having finally organised a representative sample of his artistic life’s work, he’s keen now to see how the auction goes. There’s been a lot of good feedback since the exhibition opened and he hopes he may be able to finish building a new waterfront studio with the proceeds.

Works by KT are held in private collections around the world including Sydney, New York, Los Angeles and London. Edith Symes Ken Thomas: a brief history of a painter’ runs through until Sunday June 21. All works in the exhibition are for sale at an auction beginning at 4pm that day.

aglan’s first Connect Open proved a success in getting information about local organisations, services and groups into the community.

Organised by The Raglan House, Saturday’s open day at the Raglan Town Hall attracted 28 stalls ranging from Raglan Surf Life-Saving Club, Age Concern,

Community Patrols NZ, Civil Defence and the school dental service to the Whaingaroa Environment Centre, the knitting circle and the Raglan Library.

Organiser Chrissy Hodkinson, from The Raglan House, said the stalls were set up by these non-profit groups or organisations in an attempt to have a one-stop-shop for information about services available in the Raglan community.

“It’s about trying to connect our community,” Chrissy said. “ The more connected our community is, the more resilient our community is.”

There was a steady stream of people through the town hall for the open day and plenty of talking going on – enough to call the day a success and for everyone to want to do it again next year.

Lisa Thomson and Kelly Clarkson have been elected as the two new members of the Raglan Community Board.

A bi-election, which closed on Friday last week, was held following the resignations of Linda Cole and Jon Taylor, who had both moved from Raglan.

Lisa received 671 votes and Kelly 452 votes, with PJ Harworth close behind on 406 votes.

Only a third of the 2723 eligible electors took the opportunity to cast a vote.

At its meeting this week community board members raised concerns about some eligible voters not receiving voting papers for the bi-election.

Bob MacLeod said he knew of a Ruapuke resident who had not received voting papers while neighbours either side had. Lisa had also heard of a Greenslade Road couple who had only received voting papers for one of them.

Board secretary Steve Soanes explained that anyone living in Raglan for more than a month was eligible to register to vote, and said it was disturbing that some eligible

voters within the election boundary had not received voting papers.

Board chairman Alan Vink said as this week’s community board meeting had fallen a few days short of the bi-election appeal period, Lisa and Kelly could not be formally sworn in as members.

Therefore a special board meeting would be held at the Supper Room on Tuesday, June 30 at 4.30pm for the purpose of swearing in the two new members.

New track for cyclists and walkers

at meetings this week at both the Raglan Chamber of Commerce and the Raglan Community Board.

A community board subcommittee was also working on building the broadband case for Raglan.

Chairman Alan Vink said the board was getting a representative group of people who worked in Raglan to write down why they needed faster broadband here.

new walking and cycle track has been mooted for Raglan that will stretch from Wainui Road to a lookout on Mount Karioi to capture spectacular views over the area.

The Waikato District Council came up with three different options for a track that could be as long as six kilometres: climbing from Wainui Road to a spur on the northern slopes of Mt Karioi and passing through a section of indigenous forest before descending the eastern slopes to Te Hutewai Road.

A council-commissioned scoping report on the proposed track was presented to the Raglan Community Board on Tuesday in response to interest from local walking and mountain biking groups.

“The proposal offers a feasible, easily accessible return walking track option for tourists and locals to climb part-way up the slopes of Mt Karioi to gain spectacular views over Raglan township, the harbour and the adjacent parts of the West Coast,” it said.

The report recommended the first option of developing the track as a walkway the first 3.4km of the way from a new carpark on Wainui Rd to the lookout point at an estimated cost of about $58,000.

However the board voted for the second option, which was to make the same 3.4km stretch suitable for both walkers and cyclists at a cost of about $113,000, with the aim of completing the full 6km track later when funds allowed.

Community board member Bob MacLeod said the original motivation for the track came from the Raglan Naturally document, which expressed the town’s desire for more walkways but now people wanted both walking and cycling options.

“The demand is for cycling up there - which is beautiful - more than just for walking,” Bob said.

“I believe that there would be a lot of support from the community to extending the opportunity to walk and ride,” echoed new board member Lisa Thomson.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment recently announced that it intended extending its broadband initiatives with additional funding, and establish a new initiative to expand mobile coverage.

The Waikato District Council was now preparing its bid to get some of this funding so it could expand ultrafast broadband in its communities.

Council economic development manager Clive Morgan said a list of towns, and the order of rollout, would be determined following a competitive bid process.

“The bid process takes into [consideration] the cost of logistics including new infrastructure, actual customer demand, as well as the level of assistance from local authorities and their communities,” he said.

The council was asking people to do their its fivequestion survey and share with as many networks as they could in the community so it could gather as much feedback as possible about the issue.

With over 400 carpet samples to choose from, what could be easier?

The report said Karioi had become a significant centre for recreation and tourism, with a high interest in active recreational pursuits such as surfing, cycling and walking.

But there were currently limited safe extended off-road cycling or mountain bike routes in the wider Raglan area.

There were several short walks within the Raglan township but the Te Toto Gorge track up the mountain offered a steep, demanding walk only suitable for experienced walkers.

The proposed track would start from 445 Wainui Rd at a carpark about 100 metres north of the Te Ahiawa and Wainui Rd intersection and would require the replacement of an existing bridge over Te Aewa Stream.

Waikato District Council’s Gordon Bailey said most of the proposed route was over unformed legal road reserve corridors, but included some farmland.

Landowners consulted during the study had raised concerns about possible disturbances to stock and security and safety risks.

Due to concerns about track users’ dogs possibly attacking livestock, “it would be reasonable to fully prohibit dogs from the track”, the report suggested.

After agreeing to the preferred option, the next step in the project was to liaise with affected landowners to develop solutions to their concerns, prepare designs, confirm funding and obtain the necessary consents.

Raglan Chamber of Commerce’s Charlie Young said Raglan had to build “a really good” case to ensure it was one of the places to receive the broadband funding.

“It’s [the government funding] contestable, so we have to make a better case than other places,” Charlie said.

The town had “shocking” broadband and mobile service, with many black areas where no service could be received at all.

The chamber was asking people in the Raglan community to take part in a brief electronic survey, known as “survey monkey”, to test the broadband speed and mobile coverage in the area.

“We want everyone to test their morning, afternoon and evening [internet] speeds, because then we’ll be able to get a real picture of our service.”

The chamber would also highlight about 10 case studies in Raglan where the service needed to be improved for business, education or life reasons.

T

he Waikato region is generally doing well across a range of economic, social and environmental indicators but could do significantly better on a number of fronts.

That’s the thrust of a new report presented to the regional council’s strategy and policy committee this week.

The Waikato Progress Indicators – Tupuranga Waikato (WPI) report is part of a regular council series which takes the region’s pulse across a wide variety of issues.

WPI measures 32 key economic, social and environmental indicators which are regularly up-dated and analysed to identify changes and trends over time.

“The results show that over recent years we have experienced modest economic growth, but social and environmental progress has been limited,” said the committee’s deputy chair Theresa Stark.

For example housing in Hamilton is less affordable than in other parts of the region but living in

Hamilton is still more affordable than in Tauranga, Queenstown and certainly Auckland. Generally, housing costs in New Zealand are less affordable than in many other developed countries.

Some of the other positive trends from the latest report include growing use of public transport, lower per capita costs associated with road accidents, reduced criminal offending, and better educational outcomes.

However, other negative trends include: · A major slump in annual building activity since 2007, with the start of a recovery over the last two years (although activity is still significantly lower than the peak in 2007). · An ongoing steady increase in the percentage of rural land being subdivided each year, with the greatest amount of subdivision occurring on land classed as having a high productive capability. · An increasing amount of coastal estuarine area covered with invasive pest plant species on both the east coast of Coromandel and in west coast harbours.

The reports’s author, council sustainable projects advisor Beat Huser, said that generally the Waikato region is similar to the national average on many of the measured indicators.

“However, despite significant improvements in recent years, road safety is still worse than the national average.

“Recycling remains considerably below the national average and, despite reduced offending recently, crime rates are higher than the national average,” said Mr Huser.

Regional GDP per capita, while increasing since 2007, is still slightly lower than the national average, he added.

Cr Stark said the data would contribute to debate about priorities for action by various parties across the region. “A key for our future in the Waikato will be how we can develop economically while also addressing social issues and maintain the natural resources we need for continued growth.”

Nepal relief fundraiser effort recognised

F

ollowing the recent earthquake in Nepal an impromptu fundraiser was organised over Mother’s Day weekend in Raglan in aid of Waves for Water’s Nepal Relief Initiative.

You may recall the donation tins with the blue ribbon which were scattered across a number of Raglan businesses. A huge thank you goes out to those who contributed to the fundraiser, Raglan Community Radio for spreading the message and of course the business community for hosting the donation tins. A total of NZD $648.00 was raised which translates to the provision of clean water to approximately 1,000 people.

The Waves for Water organisation has a simple mission, to get clean water to every single person who needs it. When the earthquake hit Nepal, an urgent clean­ water disaster relief initiative was mobilised with the goal to distribute clean water filtration systems, both first hand and via a network of on-theground relief bodies. One month on, with the help of small and large groups, Waves for Water have provided thousands with access to clean water in areas all around the Kathmandu valley.

The “train the trainer” model has been an essential and successful aspect to maximising

the impact in Nepal. The NHRC (Ministry of Health) and the Nepalese Army have both fully embraced the Waves for Water program and on a daily basis are implementing filtration systems in various tent camps and hospitals they are managing, in and around Kathmandu.

As of a recent update, there are 27 camps and 8 hospitals that have a consistent and reliable source of clean water - both for the injured and workers staying there.

In addition to government and military partnerships, Waves for Water are working with CNFN – Child NGO Federation Nepal, who are solely focused on providing for orphanages around the entire Kathmandu valley. Since training CNFN, the organisation has implemented filtration systems to over 25 orphanages. In total the aim is to reach over 50.
