Raglan CBD in line for major growth

aglan’s central business district is set for a big expansion if proposals put to a Waikato District Council committee last week get the green light.

Twenty five properties in Bankart Street, Wainui Road and Wallis Street would be rezoned from living to business under a plan change recommended by the council’s strategic planning and resource management team at a strategy and finance committee meeting chaired by Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley.

The plan change covers 13 properties on the south and east sides of Bankart Street – the other side of the road from where the new Raglan Four Square looks set to open any day now – and another three around the corner in the short section of Wainui Road running up to the corner of Stewart Street.

Nine Wallis Street properties backing on to the existing CBD would also be rezoned from living to business.

The staff report to last week’s meeting emphasised the proposed rezoning followed requests made either during community consultation or by individual landowners. It added the proposed zoning would “reflect the current or proposed use of the properties”.

A number of the requests for rezoning had been made since the withdrawal of the council’s controversial variation 15, a proposal which among other things would have changed the whole look and character of Cliff Street.

Council staff argued last week against a do-nothing option because, they said, it did not address the “pressing issues” [for more business-zoned properties]. They also pointed out much of the work required for the rezoning, or plan change 14 as it’s been labelled, had been completed during consultation staff undertook as part of the Raglan town centre spatial plan project.

The properties up for rezoning are 2, 4, 6, 8, 8A, 10, 10A, 12, 12A, 14A, 14B, 14C and 14D Bankart Street; 8, 10 and 12 Wainui Road and 9, 11, 13, 15A, 15B, 17, 17A, 17B and 19 Wallis Street.

Also earmarked for rezoning under plan change 14 – whose next stop is a full council meeting – are two blocks of Maori land adjoining Poihakena Marae.

Wainui Road, and Rakanui 1B Block, at 113-117 Wainui Road, would be rezoned from coastal to Pa, a move the council says would enable the land’s owners “to undertake papakainga housing or economic activities … consistent with Pa zone properties”.

A rezoning from rural to light industrial of some Tasman Lands property on SH23 is also proposed.

The plan change, once it went through, would be incorporated in the currently operative Waikato district plan.

Council makes some concrete progress ou’d think most people out for a Y day at the beach wouldn’t mind getting their feet wet, but Waikato District Council seems to have different ideas.

Strada workmen with a truck and digger were back at the area around Bow Street jetty early this week, putting in the hard yards on a $7000 footpathing project to prevent low-lying areas there pooling with water and becoming muddy.

The project – part of the council’s footpath and walkway maintenance programme – means visitors will soon be able to enjoy their fish and chips soaking in the sea views from the picnic tables at the jetty without having to step into anything other than the odd patch of damp grass.

It’s looking similar up at Wainui Reserve these days, with concrete paths recently laid to many of the picnic tables there. But the council says the projects are unrelated and the Wainui Reserve footpathing, completed this financial year, is aimed at providing access for all users including people in wheelchairs.

Labour pair at pains to laud Raglan’s recycling needed to be “mindful” of reusing and recycling and of sustainable living, she added.

Penny praised Xtreme Waste as a good local example of how recycling happened, from “on paper” ideas right through to the practical application. “It’s a multi-layered process with people putting the practices into their daily life.”

Xtreme Zero Waste as it’s now called – emphasising its final push from 75 to 100 percent diversion of waste from landfill – was looking next at “product stewardship”, Xtreme co-manager Rick Thorpe pointed out before the politicians’ once-over of the Te Hutewai Road facility.

This was a way of getting the Government on side, he said, to ensure importers and manufacturers took responsibility – as they did in most other countries – for the eventual disposal of their products within an environment-friendly system. Edith Symes

oon they may be more interested in the worm on the telly – the one that tells how their leader’s faring in political debates – but this week Labour hopefuls Penny Gaylor and Nanaia Mahuta were focusing for a photo opportunity on the worm farm up at Xtreme Zero Waste.

The recycle centre – now sporting a new sign at the gate after Saturday’s community party to mark its change of name to incorporate the word ‘zero’ – was the candidates’ first port of call on Tuesday in a whistlestop tour which included visits to Whaingaroa Harbour Care, Raglan Community House and the area school.

When the Chronicle caught up with the pair – Penny is chasing the Taranaki-King Country seat and Nanaia is seeking re-election as Hauraki Waikato MP in this year’s general election – they were expecting to be joined soon by Gisborne-based list MP Moana Mackey, the party’s environment spokesperson, after her early morning flight was delayed.

Meantime the two electorate candidates, with their campaign teams in tow, talked of how impressed they were as “Labour people” at the way the Raglan community had embraced recycling the past 14 years.

“It’s a really important institution locally and others look to Xtreme Waste (as a role model),” said Nanaia.

Saturday brings one of the country's prime live acts, the 2-man blues roots phenomenon that is Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing consist of Michael Barker, former drummer for The John Butler Trio, and guitarist vocalist Grant Haua.

‘NZ’s Got Talent’ find has world at his feet

Raglan is still fishing very well.

Snapper, gurnard, kahawai, and some trevally are still being caught in 16-20m of water off our coast. Ruapuke beach is a good example of an area fishing well.

Now they get their young performers through Wellington Circus Trust and some from training centres in Auckland, explains Irene, “but we’ve started partly training our own people too”.

The couple met in 1999 through a juggling festival in Palmerston North and have both trained at different times in Christchurch, although Irene had a background in performance from her native Austria.

Now their 12-year-old daughter Artemis – in her last year at Waitetuna Primary School – performs in the family-owned circus too, like her mother suspended gracefully from the silks.

Irene teaches from home these skills along with trapeze, hula-hooping and juggling to small groups of children in the community. And last year the school’s successful theatrical production had a circus theme, drawing on the family’s skills with use of their big top as a venue.

“Damian spent a lot of time with the kids the whole term, one day a week,” says Irene, while two of her students performed on the silks. “It worked well.”

Irene’s traditionally stayed home in Waitetuna with the kids to make their lifestyle work, then the three of them have joined Damian and the troupe for weekends and school holiday performances. E Symes

Kon-tikis off that beach fare well and you can expect fat snapper (up to 2kg) and gurnard of size. One of our crew caught eight species of fish in one day so the fishing really is good down there.

Boats going out wide to the trench have had good catches of hapuka. Another vessel out the back of Jackson’s Reef caught snapper around 8kg. Our crew caught a lot of large sharks further out, which rubbished our traces; so inshore is the place to be. We have had only one spiny dog to date.

Raglan harbour is fishing well

too, with boats catching their limit of legal snapper. One local fisho caught a 2.5kg snapper in the shallows off the Bird Watchers hut on the way to the Sugar Loaf Island.

There are plenty of flounder and it’s always good to see locals out spearing in the early evenings (off the town waterfront) with apparent success. Netting up the harbour is also good currently. Just watch being caught on the high tides with net rubbish - but yellow bellies of size are there.

So whilst this is a short report, it is like this: winter is here, the log fire is burning, weather can be rough for a week, but there are great patches or a window when the seas calm down and the sun is out, the rod is bent, and we have fresh fish for tea.

He made it two years ago it to the semifinals of ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ – and now Waitetuna teen Matthias Goed’s on his way to the top of the world.

The then Raglan Area School student who bowled the television talent show judges over with his ‘roller boller’ act is bound right now for the national circus in Iceland, just south of the Arctic Circle.

Matthias, who’s grown up in a talented family who take their own show – Circus Aotearoa – on the road six or seven months of the year, told the judges back in 2012 that once he’d left school he too wanted to make a career out of the circus.

True to his word, the now 18-year-old headed last week to Austria to stay a couple of weeks with family before flying from Germany to perform in Iceland for the summer season on the other side of the world.

Based in Reykjavik, the capital, Matthias will spend a few months with Circus Iceland’s new-tent tour, which is billed as a show where people fly and clowns have fun. Which is not too different to what Matthias, aka Alfred the Circus Nerd, has come from.

Since 2008 – the year his parents Damian Gordon and Irene Goed started Circus Aotearoa by buying up all the gear including the big top from Whirling Brothers’ Circus – Matthias has performed all around the country his gravity-defying ‘roller boller’ act, balancing and juggling on top of progressively higher moving boards atop rolling cylinders.

He actually made his circus debut at nine when Damian and Irene were still travelling with Whirling Bros before settling on their 18-hectare lifestyle block at Waitetuna where they’ve been for a decade now.

Says Irene: “We fell in love with a piece of land and I’m glad (we did), it’s such a cool community.”

She herself is an aerial artist, performing high above the ground on silks or tissue as it’s called, while Damian – a street performer from way back – is ringmaster, clown and juggler in their contemporary animal-free show based on a classic vaudeville format.

Theirs is one of only two circuses remaining in New Zealand, and the only one with its troupe made up of predominantly Kiwi-trained performers who until the earthquakes struck came from Circo Arts School in Christchurch.

Area Fishing Report:

Gardening: Putting down roots in Raglan I have been shuddering at the cold frost mornings. Last winter we did not record one.

Frosts will sweeten our root crops, parsnips, swedes, turnips and carrot by releasing sugars into the taproot.

Frosts cause many insects and bugs both good and bad to die and crusts the topsoil of your worked garden.

Working it up again with your hand cultivator enhances your soils friability, almost like a soil conditioner. Frost can kill tender plants and harden up others. If you have a plant or shrub with frost burnt leaves, don’t prune off. Let the plant do it’s own healing. Spraying water generously over tender plants early when frosted may prevent frost burn.

June is an important month in our gardening calendar. Time to visit the Garden Centres to see the new varieties of rose stock. Also it is time for fruit, nut and citrus tree plantings. Remember to stake these well for their first few years and mulch along with the roses.

It is also timely for feature trees and planned hedgerows. If planned well you get privacy, weather wind protection and landscaping that enhances the rest of your garden.

We are almost at the time to plant onion seed, garlic cloves, shallot bulbs and seed planting.

Asparagus plants and rhubarb crowns can be split up.

Cut out old raspberry and boysenberry canes - pruning and tying in the new growth canes to the support wires. Strawberries need to be divided up, replanted in black plastic ground cover (in holes), then lay straw amongst the plants.

June/July: Fruit trees and roses need pruning and

winter spray with lime sulphur or winter strength oil.

Hydrangeas need cutting back - the prunings can go in the ground to start new plants.

Maintain your flower and veggie gardens, as weeds are still germinating particularly around leek, brassicas and other small plants. All plants and shrubs now need an appropriate winter feed. You can still plant rocket, spinach, silver beet, brassicas, broad beans, and lettuce if under plastic. Garden centres have a great selection of winter flower plants established in punnets. This is the easy way to go as they will not struggle with the cold and damp.

Hedges, bushes, shrubs and trees need their trimming now to let light in and reduce future storm damage.

Kids Giveaway: Six seed tapes of carrots and six seed tapes of spinach. Seed tapes are biodegradable paper strips with carrot or spinach seeds imbedded in them at intervals. There is no thinning required. Lay the seed strip on light fluffy soil and cover with 5mm of sprinkled soil and keep moist. How simple is that?

Art to Wear 2014 O

ne of the highlights of the 2014 Raglan events calendar, the biennial Art To Wear competition held this past weekend was – once again - a spectacular night of colour, wonderment and creativity.

With the Saturday evening show selling out in just three hours after going on sale, tickets were in high demand. Judging by the quality of this year’s entries, the bar is being set higher and higher every time the show is held, both seasoned veterans and first-timers alike putting their creations on show.

“I was a little nervous about audience response after long hours of creating,” said White Light category and People’s Choice winner Charlotte Pearson of her experience entering for the first-time.

“It was a bit of a gamble about how it would come to life on stage. It was an absolute honour to win People’s Choice. It absolutely blew my mind.”

Kicking the show off with the kid’s Mahy Mayhem category, Raglan Childcare stole the show with their adorable entry, The Man Who’s Mother Was a Pirate, a contingent of pirates,

mermaids and other fabulous characters making their way down the runway.

Organiser extraordinaire Jean Carbon was astounded by the standard of all 60 entries, especially the number and quality of the children’s entries that came through this year.

“It was fantastic to have all the schools participating and it was really brilliant for Raglan Area School to have their own show before the Art to Wear too. A huge thanks to all the teachers and parents that got behind the schools. The level of work, construction, concepts, design and presentation was just amazing this year,” she said.

Whaingaroa weaver Ruth Port took out the supreme award with her entry ‘Hine Wainui’ and was ‘absolutely blown away’ by the win.

“Ruth’s piece was stunningly beautiful. She had such a presence with her performance and a brilliant story behind the piece,” said Jean.
