A series of Q & A’s with our local coaches have fun and walk away feeling good about their efforts. For so many players, it takes a lot of courage to get out on the field, so for me I am super happy when they find the confidence to give it a go.

Is it all about winning?

Nope, never. Especially not at this age (7 and 8 year olds). For me it really is about developing confidence, exploring new positions on the field, and having fun. This year we’ve got a few players who are brand new to soccer, and we have goal keepers and off-side for the first time at this age group.

I just want to encourage the boys to come out and experience playing in a supportive environment.

Was sport important to you growing up?

Very much so. My siblings and I all played sport - soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball. I have such great memories of spending day after day down at the soccer fields. My mum was my soccer coach for many years - the first female coach in our league in Los Angeles. Sport was a family affair and really was a hub for us.

How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today?

I think team sport is incredibly important because we learn so many life skills from being part of a team. Life happens in teams.

We learn about working together (mentally and physically), negotiating, social interactions, and building character. Team work is at the forefront for the Mussels right now. We are learning that we are a better team if we include all of the players on the field through passing and communicating with others, and supporting one another when a play gets by us.

Best piece of advice you could give to parents?

I was a bit frustrated after one game several weeks ago. During the game we had a player lying on the grass watching birds, a few having conversations instead of tackling the ball, and one player talking to a dog on the sidelines. At the end of the game, not knowing exactly what to say to the team, I asked “so what did you all think about the game?” And seriously, the entire team enthusiastically shouted, “that was fun!” There we have I, a lesson for us all. It sure was a great reminder for me.

Sometimes, we (parents) need to let go of our agenda (winning, for example) and let kids be kids. At the end of the day, we want them to have fun and come back for more next week.

Who do you coach?

I coach the Raglan Mussels - a 9th grade all boys soccer team.

How long have you been coaching for?

I’ve coached soccer on-and-off for many years. This is my first year coaching for Raglan.

Why did you decide to put your hand up to coach?

It was my turn. Our Club relies on parent volunteers to coach and manage the teams. I’ve been supporting my sons’ teams as a manager for the last 4 seasons.

This year the Club asked if I’d be willing to coach and our family decided that it was a good time to make it work. My husband, John, is the co-coach for those times when I can’t get to practice. And...I was promised that Alex (Crane) would be team manager; how could I say no to that? Al is so fun to work with!

What are the highlights of coaching a team?

I love everything about coaching. I love the enthusiasm the boys bring to practice and to games, watching them develop new skills, improve their playing, and I love the friendships that develop - on and off the pitch - for our players and parents!

What are the challenges?

The biggest challenge for me this year is not being able to watch my other son’s practices or games because I need to stay with my team.

What is your coaching style?

I reckon my coaching style is a mixture of fun, learning, and respect. I put in a lot of effort to engage the players in the game. They have input into what positions they want to try, what skills they want to learn. I also bring my own experiences as a coach and player and meet them in the middle. Most important for me is that they

Raglan bowler has Youth Games in her sights

R

aglan teenage bowling star Ashleigh Jeffcoat has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa later this year.

Up to 1000 young athletes aged 14-18 years would compete for 107 gold medals in nine sports at the fifth Youth Games in September, which could act as a springboard to future international competition for Ashleigh.

“It’s going to be a really good experience,” she said.

The 16-year-old Hamilton High School student would represent New Zealand in the lawn bowls division, along with a young male compatriot.

National bowling coach Dave Edwards selected several possible contenders – including Ashleigh – then Bowls New Zealand watched their progress over the last season before making its final choice.

During that time Ashleigh played with New Zealand’s development team against Australia, where the team won the series and took away the female trophy for the event.

Over summer she competed for the first time in the Heartland Bank National Open Championships in Auckland, making the finals in the women’s fours as possibly the youngest finalist at the national champs.

Ashleigh, who was only just finished her third season playing bowls, said it was a great honour to have even been selected for the long-list for the Youth Games.

“My friends are quite excited,” she said.

“Now it’s like, ‘oh my god!’”

Training out of season was a little unusual, and had to be done on artificial “carpet” greens.

It also had to be fitted in around schoolwork, but Ashleigh was managing to train about once a week.

“It’s weird because you’re not playing but you’ve still got to train.”

Her training would step up before the games in September and she would have a couple of tournaments to hone her skills on lawn greens again before flying out to the 30deg-plus heat of Apia.

Bowls New Zealand was footing the bill for Ashleigh and her fellow competitor to attend the Youth Games, where young athletes were competing in swimming, archery, athletics, boxing, rugby sevens, squash, lawn bowls, tennis and weightlifting events while staying together in the villagelike accomodation. paper snowflakes and decorative fairy lights and an overhead canopy of strewn pine branches set the scene at the local town hall last Friday night for the Raglan Area School ball, which this year focused on the fantasy world of Narnia created by children’s author C. S. Lewis.

A top-hatted student Sven Seddon was “the ultimate doorman”, said acting co-principal Quenten Browne. The year 9 student escorted 90-odd teenagers through the magical wardrobe door – a la ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ – past rows of hanging coats and into a winter

wonderland that was Raglan’s version of Narnia.

Former area school students Wes Baitson and Zach Hunwick gave “koha” back to the community by deejaying for the occasion, added Quenten, while another former student, Billy Lee-Pope, was photographer for the night.

Student leadership team member Ella McLeod-Edwards described the occasion as an all-round collaborative effort which drew on the skills not only of teachers and students but of others in the community who helped out with the likes of props and lighting.

The elaborate decorations remained intact for the midwinter masquerade ball the following night. With the introduction of a bar and a band – Synergy – the followup ball attracted about 200 locals and raised more than $1000 towards the area school’s musical equipment, said English department head Dave O’Loughlin.

It’s the second year the school’s run the fundraiser in conjunction with the student ball, advertising the event with large masks on lamp-posts and trees around town.

Off the back of a sold out show in Okere Falls this past weekend, Kiwi blues explosion Swamp Thing are set to make their return to Raglan for another night of big noise from a small band.

Longtime John Butler Trio drummer (2003-2009) Michael Barker in 2010 formed two-man Blues/Roots juggernaut Swamp Thing, recording two albums ‘Balladeer’ and ‘Primordium’ with fellow Kiwi, Grant Haua.

Swamp Thing’s energetic live performances are renowned for inspiring concert goers to dance and have fun while showcasing a wealth of musical experience and engaging their audience at all times.

Don’t miss a great night of heavy blues music this weekend! Swamp Thing will be supported by the Thunderdykes and their flavour of dirty-garage-blues-rock.

Claudia trains while fund-raising continues

aglan champion rower Claudia MacDonald is fully immersed in a grueling training schedule at Lake Karapiro, while her family and friends try to the raise the last few dollars to get her to the World Junior Championships in Brazil next month.

Claudia won the under-17 girl’s single sculling title in March at the New Zealand secondary school rowing championships, known as the Aon Maadi Cup, and had wins at the national club championships and North Island championships earlier this year.

The Fraser High School student, now 17, was then selected for the World Junior Champs, which start on August 5, and was costing her $6300 plus an extra $2200 for the eight-week training programme in Cambridge beforehand.

Family and friends were trying to raise some money to help get her to Rio de Janeiro, where she would be competing in the coxless fours event.

A ‘Grease’ fundraising event had been organised for July 25 at the Old School Arts School for the talented Claudia, who had only been rowing for two years.

Co-organiser Tish Taylor said an “action-packed” evening was planned including a sing-a-long, an auction, prizes for best dressed and dinner: “It’ll be a laugh anyway”.

Friends, family and strangers had also donated over $4000 to Claudia’s expenses through the fundraising website Give A Little, which her mother, Lyn MacDonald, said was “just amazing”, and friends had organized a raffle.

Lyn said Claudia had only been allowed home for two weekends during

the eight-week training programme.

For the final four weeks, there would be no home visits as the 23-strong New Zealand team concentrated on their rowing and tried to keep healthy.

The coaches were pleased with the team and Claudia was feeling good, with no time to feel nervous about the upcoming competition: “She’s all muscle and sinew”.

“They [the team] are beyond where their coach thought they’d be,” Lyn said. “But now they have to taper off a bit because they don’t want to hit their peak before they get there [to Rio]. It’s all worked out.”

She had been attending St Peter’s School in Cambridge during the training programme, and doing training before and after school, with only a rare day off.

The team was continuing with schoolwork over the school holidays, to make up for the time they would be missing school while at the World Junior Champs.

But Claudia was used to that, as she had always been training or rowing during school holidays since taking up the sport, which had been a costly exercise for her family in terms of petrol, training and competition costs. “[But] We’re not a sporty family so when something like this [Claudia’s selection for Rio] happens it’s just mind-blowing. Matariki at Raglan kindy We recently had such an amazing week at Raglan Kindergarten celebrating Matariki.

Brain development expert: alcohol the most dangerous drug for teenagers A

lcohol is the most damaging of all drugs, especially for teenagers, whose brains are already shut down for renovations during adolescence, says brain development expert Nathan Mikaere-Wallis.

Nathan presented a workshop on the effects of drugs and alcohol on the teenage brain at Raglan Area School last week, which was attended by Year 7-13 students, as well as many educators, parents and members of the community.

He said alcohol harmed teenagers a lot more than researchers previously thought.

“If you took all the drugs and put them together, it would be alcohol that is the most dangerous.” Nathan said.

“Even though it’s legal, it does the most damage.”

In teenagers, alcohol could increase violence, truancy and risktaking behaviour but also could have lasting effects on a brain that was still developing, particularly the areas of the brain that affected learning (frontal cortex) and memory (hippocampus).

“The earlier you are when you hit that second glass of beer in one hour, the more it stunts the growth of your hippocampus,” Nathan said.

Unlike adults, alcohol affected motor skills last in teenagers, with

their memory the first thing to be sacrificed.

“So parents, be more concerned if your child is staggering, and less concerned if they can’t remember [after a night’s out].”

It took an average teenager’s brain two weeks to recover from a night’s drinking of more than four standard units of alcohol, which was considered heavy drinking in European terms. It took adult brains 24 hours to recover from this.

Adults who allowed under-age drinking on their property could now also face $10,000 fines if they didn’t have prior written consent from the parents.

Nathan, a former developmental lecturer at the Christchurch College of Education, was a presenter and trainer for The Brainwave Trust Aotearoa, a non-profit organisation that aimed to raise public awareness about brain research and its implications for child development.

He said allowing children an occasional sip of alcohol to get them accustomed to drinking could have the opposite effect.

“The research shows that the younger your child is when they have a sip of alcohol, the more likely they are to have drug and alcohol problems later.”

Class A drugs, such as heroin,

caused immediate brain damage, and the methamphetamine drug known as ‘P’ left little holes in the user’s brain, even after one use.

“Class C drugs [such as marijuana] are the ones that are not good for your brain but they don’t damage your brain.”

However, marijuana use in under-18 year olds could trigger schizophrenia and could lower intelligence by an average eight points on the IQ scale: “So if you smoke marijuana and you’re under 18, it’s a real gamble”.

However, the brain could heal and drug-taking behaviour could be turned around.

Allowing teenagers to develop self-control – rather than imposing rules on them – was the best approach and actually helped the frontal cortex grow.

Giving them the opportunity to practice potentially dangerous situations in “what if” role-playing scenarios was also helpful, as was giving them healthy ways to take risks, such as playing sport.

Researchers previously thought the brain was fully developed by the age of 12. Now they knew the brain was still developing up to the age of 18-25 years for women and 22-32 years for men.

The quality of the first 1000 days

Brain development expert: Nathan Mikaere- Wallis of a child’s life determined brain development. First-born children often received more adult attention and stimulation, so their brains usually matured earlier than their siblings.

The frontal cortex was the front part of the brain that governed impulse control, decision-making, planning for the future, empathy and “everything that makes you a nice person”.

“About halfway through its development, it’s going to shut for renovations,” Nathan said. “And they call this adolescence.”

“What is means as a teenager, is that it becomes much harder to control your emotions, it becomes

much harder to see things from other people’s point of view, it becomes much harder to plan for the future.”

While the frontal cortex was 90 percent shut for renovations during this time, the emotional parts of the brain had a greater effect on teenagers’ decisions and actions.

While adolescents could appear a little “vacant” and to go backwards emotionally, there was actually twice as much brain activity going on inside them at that time compared with adults.

Kohanga reo teachers proud of centre’s ‘uniqueness’ I

t’s somehow fitting that Te Mania Kereopa is head teacher at a kohanga reo tucked away off a road that also bears the Kereopa name.

Whaingaroa Kohanga Reo not only borders Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive – the road to Ocean Beach named in honour of one of her illustrious forebears – but also sits on 22 acres of ancestral land bordered to the north by the harbour mouth and to the east by Raglan’s airstrip.

“Our children are part of that,” Te Mania says of the land or whenua surrounding the early learning centre where local mokopuna from birth to five years are totally immersed in Maori language and tikanga (culture). “It’s their playground.”

She’s proud of the families that make the kohanga reo – which translates literally to language nest – what it is today, nearly 30 years on from its beginning in Raglan.

Set up back then by just two families “who wanted or needed their children to have reo”, Te Mania explains, the centre runs a whanau-dependent early childhood education (ECE) and

care programme in which the only language spoken is Maori.

“If your desire for your children is to learn Maori,” she adds, “you’re welcome here.”

And Te Mania knows that first hand, as one of two kohanga teachers or kaiako who got involved some 20 years ago when she – along with colleague Peggy King – was a young mum herself. Both women are now fully qualified and make up half the team in charge of 20-odd young protégés who learn the Maori language and culture, including the spiritual dimension, through immersion.

Teachers Jackie Gillett and Jeremy Moko make up the other half of the team and together it’s a “great balance”, says Te Mania.

“The kaupapa (philosophy) is always te reo Maori and tikanga,” she stresses.

Parents and whanau are encouraged to take part in the daily programme provided by kohanga reo, Te Mania says, which often leads them on to further ECE training and qualifications. But learning to speak te reo – listening and participating on the floor alongside the children – is the first and most important step.

In fact they “become the management” in the same kind of way that Playcentre parents do, dealing with everything from staff employment and the educational programme to property and finances.

“We are the only centre where whanau still have an input into decision-making,” Te Mania says.

“We’re different … it’s not like anything else in Raglan.”

While the kohanga programme

is based on the mainstream ECE curriculum Te Whariki – used by early childhood education centres throughout New Zealand – kohanga teachers also get guidance and training from Te Kohanga Reo National Trust, which is Education Ministry-approved.

The trust – in its role as kaitiaki (guardian) of kohanga reo – offers training and support to adults to ensure survival of the Maori language through courses like te reo for whanau, and what’s called Whakapakiri for teachers.

training, Te Mania explains, in that it’s a more holistic approach and teaches what it is to “be Maori” – which is then passed on to their children at the kohanga reo.

Te Mania’s proud of the kohanga’s “uniqueness” and its place in the Whaingaroa community. The early learning, she adds, is supported by Raglan Area School’s long-established immersion unit in te reo Maori.

She believes it’s “good for our kids” to have that environment to move on to. “We know where they’re going and the relationships are good.”
