To the Editor, Clay Kids say “Thank you, Raglan!”

In great community spirit about 80 supporters gathered on Friday at the Raglan Ray White office for an hour of fundraising fun in support of the Kids Clay classes at the Old School. The team at Ray White pulled out all the stops and got adults and children bidding on some very cool goods donated by Scoot, Frocking Gorgeous, Jet Collective, Husk, Wine Dealer.co.nz, Te Uku store, Raglan Roast, Raglan Pharmacy, Gail Clark and the Herbal Dispensary. The delightful miniature garden created by Heather Ellis was a hit with the children, while the whimsical clay sculpture donated by Susanne Prinz found a new home after fierce bidding. The happy winner was Mark Reynolds, who also donated a CD of locally written and produced music by PigSlug .

A total of $808 dollars was raised during the auction, covering the Kids Clay funding shortfall of $540 for the rest of 2013, and with extra to carry forward to 2014. Coastguard makes ‘copybook’ rescue from overturned boat Raglan Coastguard has been called out to another major incident near Gannet Island – but this time there’s been a happy outcome.

The Coastguard's rescue last Saturday night of three fishermen from the upturned hull of their seven-metre hardtop boat came three months after it played a central role in the search for and retrieval of the wreckage of a plane which plunged into the sea off Gannet Island, killing mobile phone company boss Eric Hertz and his wife Kathy.

Two and a half years previously the Coastguard was also involved in a search near Gannet Island for Te Awamutu man John Lindsay, who went missing while diving with friends and whose body was found a month later washed up on Ruapuke Beach.

Saturday’s callout in contrast had a happy ending, with the three fishermen – coincidentally also from Te Awamutu – reunited with their families at Raglan wharf after what Coastguard president Wally Hawken described as a “copybook operation”.

He said the skipper of the flipped boat “did everything right as far as we could see”, and managed to get to the locator beacon and set it off.

Coastguard stalwart Kevin Dreaver, who helped crew the Gallagher Rescue boat on the rescue mission, said the Coastguard and a rescue helicopter were called out and given an exact fix about 5.45pm by the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Wellington.

The rescue helicopter hovered over the hull, about five miles southeast of Gannet Island, until Gallagher Rescue arrived about 8pm.

“The helicopter crew could see two people aboard [the hull] but it turned out they were huddled together and it was actually three,” Kevin said, discounting initial reports that a third person was floating in the water without a lifejacket.

The trio told their rescuers they’d been trying to retrieve the anchor when the boat was flipped by a wave. “Two had a chance to grab a lifejacket

but the other didn’t,” Kevin said.

The rescue boat took the three fishermen back to Raglan wharf where, Kevin said, the recently opened Coastguard shed had a treatment room in which the “pretty appreciative” trio could have been warmed up after their ordeal.

However in the end the fishermen were instead treated in a waiting ambulance before being picked up at the wharf by their wives.

New look Chronicle unveiled next week

Once again Raglan Golf Club was left picking up the pieces as they suffered their second break in of the year last Tuesday night.

Call it a seven-year-itch if you will but next week, for the first time in seven years, the Chronicle team brings you a new look paper for your weekly reading pleasure.

The break in, which was carried out by at least two assailants, left a much larger trail of damage and stolen items than the club has encountered before and once again leaves it struggling to remain financially above water. Among the stolen items were three chain saws which were essential to the clubs firewood fundraising operation and in the trail of destruction were the clubs intruder alarm system, several doors and the clubs computer.

Vice President Stuart Doran said ‘This is a serious blow to the club as once again we face a large excess in our insurance claim and will struggle to replace all of the stolen and damaged items’. When asked how the club will prevent this type of thing happening again he said ‘Clearly an alarm is no longer a deterrent on its own so we are looking at using a guard dog or installing a CCTV to help, it’s just a matter of raising the funds as we are a non profit making club and survive mainly through the hard work of volunteers’.

The burglars used the club's electric golf carts to transport the stolen items to their getaway car in Te Hutewai Road, and anyone who saw anything on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning should contact the police. Club President Mike Goodison said that the golf club doesn’t keep any excess cash, cigarettes, or expensive alcohol at the clubhouse, and the burglars’ efforts are largely in vain. The damage caused by these break-ins is a serious drain on club finances, and really heart-breaking to the club volunteers who strive to maintain a golf course and club-house for the recreational and social use of our townsfolk and visitors.

“We went back to have a look but couldn’t see it [the rest of the boat],” he said. Although the Coastguard crew were “pretty sure it’s gone down” Kevin said they might run a search pattern with a depth sounder to make certain.

migrate directly to estuaries and sandy beaches of the North Island.

Distribution is almost worldwide.

These birds feed on mud flats and pasture searching for mollusks, estuarine worms, earthworms, insect larvae, crabs, other small mollusks and occasionally small fish. They can open bivalves by stabbing between the shells and twisting the bills to part the shells.

The best time and place to see South Island Pied Oystercatchers is at high tide on our local airfield resting or on the estuary at low tide where they are feeding on the mud flats. Their lives are governed by the tides as they feed on the low tide and sleep on the high tide regardless of the time.

Most of the oystercatchers return to the South island to breed in the spring, some of the juveniles stay with us in Raglan where life is pretty good.

As from this week onwards there may be slight changes in when the recycling and pre-paid bag trucks visit your house. Because of this please put your recycling and pre-paid bags out by 8.30am.

The NZ Traffic Agency has established a new system for all kerbside collections in New Zealand.

The system is about ensuring the safety of the kerbside collection team and other road users. For busy streets this means kerbside teams need to travel down both sides of the road rather than the runners crossing the road and picking up both sides at the same time. This has been identified as a risk

for runners especially in busy city environments.

INCIDENTS: We are regularly receiving complaints from members of the public about the behaviour of some of the youths waiting to be picked up to go to Youth Group on Thursday nights. Some are running out into traffic, verbally abusing people, unlawfully going onto properties and generally making a nuisance of themselves. This could be alleviated if the kids didn't hang around the town centre for hours on end. Please keep your kids at home until pick up time - 7pm.

ARRESTS: We are pleased to report the arrest and charging of a young 20 year old burglar who admitted to breaking into 6 holiday houses over a fortnight period recently. This is a good reminder for holiday home owners to keep in touch with their neighbours, especially if they are permanent residents, to keep an eye on their holiday home.

Burglar alarms and security lighting will also help.

There was a burglary last week at Xtreme Waste. Tools, equipment and scrap metal was stolen.

Raglan Golf Club was also burgled last week. Cash, alcohol and chainsaws were stolen.

TRAFFIC: You may have noticed a higher police presence on SH23. Constable Holmes will be patrolling the highways and byways between here and Huntly/Ngaruawahia at random times, both day and night.

MESSAGE OF THE WEEK : We have had changes here at the station due to restructuring. We have lost our Sergeant position as a result and we are now back to being a 3-person station. We are being overseen by the Officer in Charge of Ngaruawahia Station. Our telephone system has also changed. All calls are being answered in Hamilton. If you ring to make a historic theft or burglary report, let them know why you're calling and they can take the report over the phone for you and then they will advise us, and we will attend at a suitable time. Please be patient with these changes. Apparently they will be better for everyone.

How would you describe your music?

Honest, lyrically driven, bitter-sweet indie/ambient pop.

Balancing act: Children take turns on the high rope bridge

Three times every week at Matapihi Kindergarten – on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays – 10 children and two teachers get to ‘go bush’ come rain or shine.

They pack their bags with lunches, a change of clothes and wet weather gear – if rain is forecast – and head off for an action-packed day of exploration in the paddocks and among the native bush on Matapihi’s eight-acre property.

The rural environment, just a short drive off SH23 towards Te Mata, boasts not only its own stand of kahikatea but also a large pond for a bit of boating, of the inflatable kind, and a mud pit or two for some very messy play, says teacher Angela Kimber.

And from that natural environment “bush kindy” days have evolved, she explains, bringing the concept of Uru Taiao – or entering into the realms of nature – to Matapihi.

Angela admits it’s popular these days, trendy even, to take three to five-year-olds in early childhood centres and kindergartens to the park or the bush for an adventure, but it’s rare to have such natural features on site.

The great outdoors is a playground right on Matapihi’s doorstep, and there’s a strong emphasis on using it.

On Uru Taiao days the 10 children whose turn it is to venture out leave behind their 20-odd peers and might, for instance, challenge themselves on the high ropes or rope bridges strung between trees.

There’s both a lower rope challenge they can step up onto from the ground – moving sideways along one rope with their feet while holding onto another with their hands – and a higher one with a rope ladder attached for the more daring.

It teaches the children balance, co-ordination,

agility and confidence, says Angela. “They need to be able to climb up themselves, and have the confidence to do it.”

Nevermind that they wibble and wobble all over the place, she adds. It’s about “risk analysis” – each child gauging whether it’s for them or not.

Other activities include the camp-like experience of helping make a small fire and perhaps toasting bread over it, or feeding eels down in the stream with old meat. Some “lovely rotten sausages” were used recently for that very purpose, Angela recalls.

The children also do a bit of good old-fashioned tree-climbing, learning the names of trees and birds as they go, and have “so much more time” to laze around studying bugs and insects in the grass.

A nest of huhu bugs in a piece of disintegrating wood had a captive audience last week with children “picking away” and examining it for ages, Angela says.

She told the Chronicle the staff at Matapihi did a lot of “action research” last year as part of their professional development, supporting children’s social competence using the natural environment.

And she described the emphasis on their environment, both indoor and outdoor, as “very strong”.

Angela and co-owner Merren Goodison – who are part of the team that set up Matapihi Kindergarten four years ago as an alternative to their long-established childcare centre in downtown Raglan – also presented a workshop to 100 early childhood teachers at a recent Childspace conference.

They have lots of visiting teachers from other early childhood centres too, adds Angela, including this week a 20-strong tour group from across the Tasman led by an educator they met at last year’s conference. Edith Symes

Where have you been performing lately?

I’ve played three gigs so far with my new band in Auckland. Our first gig was at The Portland Public House and it was awesome to have Raglan girl Anna Coddington in the crowd. She was supporting her friends Julia Deans and Anika Moa who played before us for the Kingsland folk club. Our second gig was at Britomart 1885 playing at a NZ music showcase for music month.

Do you come from a musical family?

When did you learn to play an instrument?

My mum told me that whilst she was expecting me she started learning the piano but had to give up as she had no time what with having five other children to look after. So when I started school she encouraged me to take piano lessons and I got to grade 4 but stopped because I didn’t want to read music, I was only interested in composing new music

What in your memory is your best gig ever?

It would have to be when I played with my former band Hand Me Downs at the Battle of the Bands in Hamilton because of the amount of support we got from our Raglan family.

Song or tune playing in your head right now?

I need to get my fire back by NZ singer / songwriter Jesse Sheehan.

What would you save in a fire?

My lyric book.

Are you a dog or a cat person?

They both give me allergies but if I had to choose it would be a dog.

Best piece of advice ever given?

My big sister told me there are only two days in life that you can’t do something, yesterday and tomorrow.

What four people dead or alive would you invite for dinner?

I would invite a mixture of really random personalities such as my favourite comedian Alan Partridge for his sheer awkwardness, David Attenborough to keep the conversation going, my boyfriend Dougal and Delia Smith so she could cook the dinner!

If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself?

A fridge with a butter conditioner.

If you could live any time in history when would it be?

The swinging 60’s.

In another life what career would you have?

I’m performing at the Leigh Sawmill on 21st July with our indie pop friends The Map Room.
