Dear Editor, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the wonderful people in Raglan and the greater Whaingaroa area who have supported Plastic Free July. Plastic Free July is an international initiative aimed at creating awareness about plastic consumption and pollution. Raglan is currently admired and respected worldwide for its commitment to this initiative, and in many respects is considered a leader in plastic awareness. The community, particularly as a seaside town making a stand, can be very proud; it is estimated that 10 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans each year.

A big thank you to The Herbal Dispensary, The Harbour View Hotel, Trade Aid, Ruapuke Bread, SuperValue, Waikato District Council, Raglan Kindergarten, the Karioi Classic, Raglan Radio, A Rocha New Zealand, Xtreme Waste, Para Kore, the Whaingaroa Environment Centre, all the people taking up the challenge, all the businesses that have accommodated their needs, and everyone who has been made aware of the issues and adjusted their shopping habits (no matter how small the change in your consumer behaviour).

If manufacturers cannot demonstrate they are safe or relatively safe, without testing on animals, then they should not be permitted

Barry Ashby, Raglan Dear Editor I wanted to let everyone know about a new bylaw that came in to force on the 1st July for paddle boarders, to everyone in the paddle boarding world’s frustration, which was that PFD’s are to be worn at all times, our district Councilor Clint Baddeley, who then had further meetings with the Regional Council and many others in the paddle boarding industry, including Bill Dawes, president of NZSUP, the organisation for Stand Up Paddbleboarding in New Zealand. There were also meetings with Maritime NZ and again with the Regional Council to arrange to have an exception for

New board set to be a mix of fresh and familiar faces

At the last elections in October 2010 Raglan got itself an all-new community board after none of the old line-up stood again, mostly out of frustration at feeling toothless.

But a quick Chronicle survey this week of current board members’ intentions shows that while frustration at the sometimes mysterious workings of the Waikato District Council remains, at least two and perhaps more sitting members are happy Raglan’s interests.

With the nomination period for local authority candidates now open, the Chronicle emailed existing community board members asking their intentions – and any reasoning or thinking they were happy to share with readers.

And the big surprise was board chairman Rodger Gallagher’s revelation he didn’t want another three years in the top job.

He said that when he became chair, it was obvious the big social and economic issue for Raglan was getting the wharf working again. The new board moved the wharf up to its top priority and steadfastly worked on its completion “including

By its deadline the Chronicle had not heard back from Linda Cole or Terry Horn.

He gave no real hint of whether he’d seek re-election as a board member, but emphasised the board performed a valuable “watchdog” role and that it was important for strong representatives to put themselves forward.

“Yes, I will be standing again for the Raglan Community Board,” was all he had to say.

Waikato’s “Volunteer of the Year”, Bob MacLeod, revealed he’d already downloaded a nomination paper, and

Ashby, who said he had not been well since a heart operation a couple of years ago.

“While I have missed very few meetings I do not think I have been able to devote as much energy and time as is warranted,” he said.

He also hinted at frustrations with the board’s relationship with council, saying “there is a lot that … is conducted by council in spite of anything we may say”.

Barry also called for better representation from the likes of Maori, youth and single-parent families and felt at least half the board should be 40 or younger. But he lavished praise on some of his fellow board members, saying “Rodger has been tops, Bob likewise” and describing Clint Baddeley – who as Raglan ward councillor attends board meetings – as “a tireless worker for Raglan”.

Nominations for council and community board elections close on Friday August 16.

Voting papers will be sent out to electors from September 20 and must be mailed back to council by midday on “election day”, October 12.

New riparian tax breaks welcomed Waikato Regional Council is welcoming new tax breaks that will contribute to protecting water quality.

From this month, riparian plantings by farmers are tax deductible as an operational capital expenditure.

A change to the Income Tax Act explicitly allows deductions for plantings to “prevent or mitigate discharges into

water courses or water bodies”. The provision is available to trees, shrubs and other plantings.

The Government says the new measure will encourage farmers to plant trees and shrubs in riparian strips along creeks and rivers, thereby increasing natural habitat and reducing the amount of sediment and nutrients entering waterways.

“Waikato Regional Council, its partner iwi and stakeholders have a strong focus on protecting water quality in our region,

so the Government’s new tax rules are a welcome addition to measures supporting this,” said catchment services group manager Scott Fowlds.

“The council itself already offers grants of up to 35 per cent of the cost of fencing off waterways and riparian plantings on farms in priority catchments.”

Rangimarie – who has worked at the hospital and rest home for 10 more recently as manager – says

October 1 and that Raglan Hospital and Rest Home, as it’s now called, will be fully functional again by then.

“We went with local builders West Coast Construction,” adds Rangimarie, “and we’re absolutely over the moon watching it all take shape.”

The charitable trust which ran the facility for 20-odd years is no longer involved with the hospital, and trust chairman Peter Storey says the trust deed is in the process of being changed.

The facility is getting better by the day, he says, and already has “quite a different feel” to the trust hospital of old.

To your average townie, calving and lambing seems like such a benevolent time of year.

Driving past a paddock and seeing newborns gamboling around awkwardly - lambs look like they are wearing wooly ugg boots, calves galloping around wearing little jackets, it never fails to initiate a series of oooh’s and “aaaaw cute!”

A colourful collection of Hughes surfboards lined the walls as testimony to his reputation – built up over more than four decades – as a master shaper.

Craig, or Hughesy as he was known to surfers, had lost an eight-year battle with cancer the previous weekend.

And the community turned out in force – a line of cars extending well back along Norrie Avenue for the duration of the 2½ hour service – to remember what celebrant and school principal Malcolm Cox described as “a life well lived and shared hugely with others”.

His father Joe spoke of shaping around the beaches of Whakatane and Ohope where they lived. He had a great love surfboard in the family garage at the age of only 14. But Joe said Craig also had “a little sense of mischief which never left him”.

His son was also rarely without a pen in hand and “drew some fantastic things from an early age”.

Craig’s younger brother Jeremy – a Raglan local of 15 years now – said some of the most memorable parts of his life were those spent with Craig. “He

A brief history of Raglan Junior Soccer all began in the early I t1980’s.

No one is totally sure which year but we’ve been given a photo of a kids’ team at Kopua with 1982 written on the back. We know they started with just two teams and that the club was set up by parents who wanted an alternative to rugby for their kids in Raglan.

Brief description of your practice?

I work as a multi media artist, sometimes in paint, with domestic fabric, sometimes in poetry and sometimes I focus on my writing and guiding others with their creative practises.

What are you working on at the moment?

A poetry novella titled ‘Inside the Mad Women’s Head.’ A novel that has about 100 drafts and twenty

outside the supermarket every Saturday “forever” to raise the money. Perhaps they were the height of fashion back in the 80s but the club is very happy with our green and black vertical stripes these days.

Are you from an artistic family?

My lovely elderly mother is a wonderful painter, pianist, writer, she’s a good role model for how to commit to and perservere with arts. My Dad sang, sadly very out of tune and loved music.

My kids are all musicians and love to mess around with paint.

When did you decide to pursue a creative career?

I never made that decision, it has always been a part of my life, my adult children’s lives as well.

high tide. It very quickly got to the point where the teams from Hamilton issued an ultimatum saying they wouldn’t come out to Raglan anymore until something was done about it.

You can tell times have changed from what happened next: One weekend in spring three of the dads got a truck and a couple of tractors and raided the sand dunes (where the new BMX track is) in order to raise the height of the one existing pitch and then create a second pitch big enough for adults to play on. Thanks to Alan Dando who was the only one of the early parents with surviving memories. Also there, but unsure of what happened was Clint Baddeley, Bernie Brown, John Beet and Butch Walters (well, Bill does remember his saw horse being broken but that’s all). Also possibly there were Mark Snowden and Rob Cowley.

Preliminary Coroner’s reports indicate both individuals died as a result of drowning.

In Brief: ‘Raglan Naturally’ plan to finally have its day The community-driven but longignored “Raglan Naturally” plan put to good use – as the basis for a new structure plan for Raglan.

Raglan Community Board chairman Rodger Gallagher said a workshop on the issue this week agreed Waikato District Council staff would cease gathering views from the community as enough canvassing had been done and the new research ‘Raglan Naturally’”.

He said the session – also attended by invited parties – agreed the work needed was bigger than just the CBD looked at by the stalled spatial study.

A structure plan was required to economically consider all Raglan’s needs.

Rodger said ‘Raglan Naturally’ would be used as the basis for council staff to prepare a draft structure plan for preliminary consultation. They would take note of a list he’d prepared of completed ‘Raglan Naturally’ elements, and also of a district plan correlation list put together by John Lawson and Linda Silvester.

Teen’s body found off Manu Bay Police say the death of a Hamilton teenager in the ocean off Raglan late last week was not suspicious.

Emergency services were called out about 1am last Friday after the missing 19-year-old’s motorcycle

was found at Manu Bay. A Raglan Coastguard crew found her body in the water in a land and water search which also involved Land Search and Rescue volunteers, police and the Aucklandbased Eagle helicopter. The death has been reported by police to the coroner.

Whitebait season approaching The annual whitebait season is under a month away - so a timely reminder about the rules is due, says the Department of Conservation.

The season extends from 15 August to 30 November in all parts of New Zealand except the West Coast of the South Island, and people could face hefty they use illegal equipment.

Fishing is allowed between 5.00am and 8.00pm from the start of the season,

and then from 6.00am to 9.00pm when New Zealand daylight saving time comes into effect, says Waikato Area compliance ranger Chris Annandale.

Illegal equipment or equipment illegally set will be seized by Department of Conservation Rangers. The whitebait regulations haven’t changed since 1994, but everyone needs to be aware of the rules relating to net size, where they can need to stay within 10 metres to their net at all times.

Raglan parents shy away from childhood immunisation

T

he subject of vaccination is complex and highly controversial.

Parents may fully support immunisation, feel uncertain at times, or refuse vaccinations all together.

No matter what side of the argument, parents are equally concerned about the health of their children.

Dr. Michael Loten, GP at Raglan West Coast Health, said local parents lag behind the rest of New Zealand in having their children vaccinated. Only 62 percent of two - year olds in Raglan are fully vaccinated compared to the national average of 87 percent, according to the Ministry of Health Immunisation Report 2013.

Dr. Loten said that rates below 90 percent punch a hole in what is called herd immunity. “If up to 95 percent of people are vaccinated, vaccine preventable diseases cannot take hold. If it slips below 90 percent it can, and it has.”

During the past few years, New Zealand has had an outbreak of whooping cough (also known as pertussis) all over the country.

2013 is shaping up to be a record year in Raglan and the Waikato region for pertussis, with a 69 percent increase in cases compared with this time last year, according to the Waikato District Health Board. The year was 205, up from 63 at the same time last year.

Dr Loten stated that the high rate of vaccine refusal in Raglan makes it easier for whooping cough (and other diseases) to spread.

The World Health Organization and the New Zealand Ministry of Health are in agreement that vaccines are safe and recommend that all children follow the childhood immuisation schedule.

So why are 38 percent of Raglan families choosing not to vaccinate?

It appears there has been an erosion of public trust in science as well as broken experts.

Raglan homeopath, and mother of three, Janies Beet said that parents want to eliminate even a remote chance that their child will experience serious side effects from a vaccine. “There is so much overwhelming information out there, “she said. “For people to make a decision out of fear is not a good place. Decisions should be made out of knowledge.”

Dr. Loten said that even though vaccines are our best defense against infectious diseases, no vaccine is 100 percent safe or 100 percent effective. In fact, vaccines are capable of causing adverse effects beyond a sore injections site and a mild fever.

However, serious side effects are extremely rare. “The diseases you are protecting your child against are far more dangerous than any possible vaccine side effect,” the local GP said. “Parents underestimate the diseases and overestimate the adverse reactions.”

Beet recommends parents who choose to vaccinate to give their children vitamin C, starting a couple of weeks before they have the vaccines.

Amanda Watson Green, Raglan resident, decided to vaccinate her two children along an alternative schedule. “There were way too many vaccines at the same time,” Green said. “We spread them out and came back for multiple visits instead. I did not want to overwhelm them.”

But nearly all medical experts believe that a baby’s immune system is well equipped to handle the antigens contained in multiple vaccines. “Vaccines contain only a tiny number (of antigens) in comparison to what babies encounter every day in their normal environment,” Dr Loten said.

“Vaccinations are given early because that’s when they are at risk.”

Yasmin Awan, of Raglan, belongs to the growing population of parents that strongly disagree with the medical community. decided not to vaccinate her second child due to further research on the subject. What she found convinced her that the risks associated with vaccinations outweigh any putting your healthy child at risk every time you take them in for shots.”

“Many of the vaccines for children are not even medically necessary. No reasons to vaccinate against chickenpox and measles.

Our bodies can handle these diseases,” Awan said.” I don’t trust the information provided putting all those chemicals in my children anymore. No way.”

Before a vaccine is approved for use in New Zealand, the manufacturer must demonstrate its safety and effectiveness to

the satisfaction of Medsafe, a division of the Ministry of Health.

However, Awan worries about tetanus and is considering taking her unvaccinated daughter in for this particular vaccine. “It’s a personal choice. You know what’s best for your own child. All we can do is to make an informed decision.”

Dr. Loten said that vaccination is more than a personal choice. “When you make a decision to not vaccinate your child, you put your entire community at risk.”

Many parents turn to the internet for information which can serve as a valuable tool when used correctly. But it also becomes the space for abundant invalid information since anyone can post anything, another opinion If one types “vaccination” into Google, is that of the New Zealand Immuisation Awareness Society (IAS) – an organization that encourages people to make informed decisions about whether or not to vaccinate by providing information about vaccination issues and possible side - effects.

Recently, IAS has come under community over the information it provides and in September 2012 the New Zealand Charities Registration Board revoked IAS as a charitable organisation, citing them for promoting a point of view rather than educating the public.

One relatively common misperception among parents is that the diseases we vaccinate against are rare, and it’s unlikely that our children will come into contact with them. Dr. Loten said that vaccine preventable diseases still persist around the world and with global travel, just a plane ride away. “If we stopped vaccinating these “With so much misinformation out there, we encourage parents to come in to the clinic for a talk,” Dr. Loten stated. “We will answer questions about vaccine safety and any other concerns. We respect parents no matter what their choices are.”

How did you end up living in Raglan?

We wanted a new adventure and we had heard so many good things about New Zealand so we decided to go for it. We ended up in Raglan for the surf.

After looking at maps, Wavetrak and reading here. Expectations were high but Raglan exceeded them. Walking down Bow Street, we got the small town vibe. ”Gangs” of little kids cruising around on scooters, people walking in the middle of the street oblivious to cars, and tanned barefoot individuals wherever we turned. It seemed life in Raglan had hit the slow motion button in a good way. We had lunch at the hotel and we knew right then that we wanted to stay. This place is like no other.

What do you miss about the States?

Miss my family and friends every day. And of course the convenience of drive – thru everything; drive – thru banking, pharmacies, restaurants, cleaners, cars wash, liquor stores and coffee shops.

A small movie theatre.

Best book you have read lately?

A Game Of Thrones What do you like doing when you are not working?

Painting, reading, cycling, dancing, traveling but most of all spending time with my friends and my little family that consists of my husband Ben and our two sons. (Benji 5yrs & Axel 1 yr) Your best traveling experience?

I’ve been a lot of places but my 6 months in Kenya (in 2005) working as a volunteer changed my life in many ways. I registered an NGO called Martens Community Programme during my stay in 2005. Since then, we have successfully started many projects to reduce poverty throughout the region. We are currently building a school for orphans in the western part of Kenya. The goal is to have the school up and running by January 2014. The warm citizens of Kenya taught me a theory that explains if you always give, you will always have.

Future plans?

Going back to school in February (2014) to get a Master in Marketing at the University of Waikato Management School. We don’t know exactly where we will end up. We will probably stay here in Raglan until we are up for a new adventure.
