“We want to express our sincere appreciation to Kopua Holiday Park management for its effort,” he told the Chronicle. “Also for the support from all over the Raglan community – we literally wouldn’t survive without it.”

The extra funds will go into the organisation’s operational account to keep resources going, added Wally, mindful the 11-metre twin hull Coastguard boat and jetski together use well over $1000 in fuel each month.

There are also other ongoing costs, he adds, which are financed too through donations and local fundraising.

Holiday park assistant manager Jo Hamblyn says the auction is a “feel-good” event which this year saw a massive crowd bid generously for everything from campground t-shirts at $75 to nine unframed prints donated by Raglan West artist Jane Galloway, which fetched a “whopping” $1000 in total.

A Piwiwiwi campervan four-day rental went for $400 and an outsized twin meat pack from the local butchery was sold for more than $200.

Sunset cruises and surf lessons were also up for grabs.

Not one of the town’s business-owners from the previous year’s list hesitated when asked to contribute goods or services to the charity auction, Jo says. “And there were lots of new ones (contributors).”

Raglan Real Estate’s Julie and Dave Hanna played auctioneers at the campground for the evening, and considering bidders came mostly from the camp’s 1000 holidaymakers on site it was an “awesome” effort, said Jo. Edith Symes

Despite the distance between himself and Billy he was still stoked to make the final. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It shows me that I have still got it and still can do itâ&#x20AC;? said a more than happy Chris.

Mount Maunganui surfer Tim Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connor who is currently based in Raglan placed third in the final. He surfed the whole 25 minutes on his own at the north end of the beach where every other surfer had competed during the day but the waves simply did not cooperate.

Over in other divisions, Poulter brothers, Ben and Sam, took the top two spots in the U18 Longboard final. It was older brother Ben who claimed the title, the two brothers defeating local Piha surfers Tane Wallis and Tunui Wano during the final heats.

Older sister Alexis Poulter also did well in the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longboard division placing second ahead of past favourites Mischa Davis (3rd) and Belinda Goodwin (4th).

All-round waterman Daniel Kereopa just missed out on a Stand-Up Paddleboard national title, placing second behind Shayne Baxter of Christchurch.

Raglan also had strong representation in the older divisions with Geoff Hutchison taking out the Grand Masters title (Over 45s), Jeremy Hughes coming second in the Legends (Over 50s) and Deane Hishon coming third in the Veterans (Over 40s).

Health centre opening coincides with family day

Poihakena Marae is set to host its second whanau ora or family day early next month along with the official opening of a holistic health centre dedicated to the memory of longtime Raglan GP Tom Ellison.

The young 22 year old is ranked 79th in the world and is New Zealandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third highest ranked surfer on the international circuit. Billy starts 2012 on another high after beating 11time world champion Kelly Slater in 2011.

Billy notched up several excellent scores in quick succession in the final, his two highest, 8.90 and 8.20 point rides, using his impeccable backhand surfing on the lefthanders of Piha Bar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good to start to the year winning a national title, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going overseas soon so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good for my confidence and everything like that but yeah, at the moment, a national title, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe itâ&#x20AC;? said Billy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every heat is hard, I just wanted to catch the best waves out there, I saw some on the bar and wanted to get them and it paid off.â&#x20AC;?

It was a big decision for Billy to surf up the beach. He and fellow finalist Chris Malone (Gis) were the first surfers of the day to do so.

However, with the outgoing tide and building swell, the strategy paid off handsomely. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was going wave for wave with Chris and I knew Timmy was down the beach but I was feeling confident after the first wave and yeah it all just happened.â&#x20AC;?

Local festival setup for revellers Celebrate Waitangi Weekend in style by attending “Boardies and Bikinis’ - a two day music event at the beautiful Ruapuke Beach Motor Camp, 20 minutes west of Raglan.

Trails of visitors eyed as artists open up studios Raglan artists putting the finishing touches to preparations for the Open Studio Weekend starting Saturday have their fingers crossed for an “avalanche” of visitors and buyers this time, thanks to better advertising and signage than for last summer’s successful inaugural event.

Art trail administrator Jacqueline Anderson says a significant sum’s been poured into advertising nationwide, with 7000 brochures also directing art buffs to 38 studios from Waitetuna to Whale Bay, and it’s now over to the artists themselves to “take ownership” and help turn the town into an art destination.

It would be a major coup, she told the Chronicle at a pre-launch art trail get-together at the Old School, to see the Open Studio Weekend grow to become an iconic annual event like Waiheke Island’s wine festival.

“It’s about bringing all the artists together for the benefit of Raglan,” she said.

Held over Auckland Anniversary Weekend both this year and last, the three-day event also just happens to coincide with an annual fishing contest at Manu Bay organised by Raglan Sport Fishing Club.

“Perhaps the guys can go fishing while the girls look at art,” suggested Jacqueline.

If there was any spinoff it wouldn’t be the first time the arts trail has gained leverage off a sporting event, though last time it was a massive international one – September’s Rugby World Cup, when a lower budget open studio weekend was organised to lure here some of the hordes of cup fans in Hamilton for the All Blacks vs Japan match.

Meantime several local artists visited nine fellow artists’ studios in a three-hour recce last Saturday to familiarise themselves with the variety of art and craft on offer, which includes everything from pottery, painting and photography to textiles, bone carving and jewellery-making.

While the aim of the exercise was to ensure artists could talk knowledgeably to visitors about

the sort of art on show at other studios, they also found it a privilege to visit others’ workspaces.

Whale Bay painter Miranda Jane Caird, who works in isolation, saw the Open Studio Weekend as a great way of “connecting” with Raglan’s arts community, and particularly enjoyed that aspect last January.

Jewellery-maker Sarah Steed said the weekend was a very good opportunity to get people to take your business card and follow up, while potter Clare Wimmer welcomed what she described as the “amazing” exposure. As a direct result of last summer’s weekend her work was publicised on the CleverBastards website.

Photographer Stuart Mackenzie – who works from home in Raglan West with partner Jane Galloway and her son Julian Godfrey, both painters – agreed the exposure was great but also found it a little scary contemplating the possible avalanche of art buffs this time around after the trio still saw more than 200 through their doors the same weekend last year.

The Old School Arts Centre attracted 200 to 300 visitors on each of the three days of last summer’s Open Studio Weekend. Several artists will again be at work within the Stewart Street building this coming weekend.

As in 2011, artists will keep a tally of visitors to their studios so the Raglan Community Arts Council which runs the event can report back to funders – among them Creative Communities NZ, the Waikato District Council and major sponsor the Raglan Land Company.

The event has been advertised this time around in national magazines Life & Leisure, Artzone and Artists Alliance. Turquoise and pink flags and posters will also be placed outside every participating studio and gallery.

Arts council chair Roger Gallagher has stressed to artists the importance of signage. “Make it easy (for visitors) to find your front door.”

Clay Fiesta at the Old School Fun and fundraising will go hand in hand at the Old School Arts Centre when the ever-growing group of people who use the Clay Shed pottery invites the community to ‘have a look’ and ‘have a go’.

The aim is to raise funds to ugrade the large kiln which is available to all who work with clay but don’t have their own fully equipped studios. The biggest user group are the many children who flock to the after-school clay classes at the Old School, and who have produced some amazing work over the past two years. Now a growing number of adults are coming in to use the kiln and other equipment available in the Clay Shed for a very modest fee While the present kiln is still functional, its life is limited, and working with clay is one activity that literally turns to dust if the clay is not fired, sometimes several times before a piece is completed and decorated. We need to raise several thousand dollars to purchase a kiln that will meet present and future demand.

The fiesta, on the weekend of 18-19 February will include a gallery exhibition of work by local potters, some demonstrations, and an opportunity to “have a go”, decorating hand-made tiles for an installation in the grounds of the Old School.

Exhibition pieces will all be for sale, there will be a market stall of smaller items, raffles, and a caféstyle refreshment bar. The exhibition will continue in the gallery during the week after the fiesta itself, and the tile making for the installation is set to go on for several months, and will include schools and other groups.

Te Akau living: A view from the other side Sometimes referred to as Raglan’s Waiheke Island, looking across the harbour towards Raglan from the other side, sheds light on a completely different perspective on our community.

While the coast and land has a significant amount of history associated with it, the area has been developed over the last hundred years or so. Ray White Raglan has recently brought some of the properties around Te Akau Wharf Road on to the market.

The road itself was built ‘about a century ago’ according to local history man John Lawson when there were still kiwi and kaka seen to be roaming around in the bushy coastal area.

Sports fishing lures anglers into the deep Last Wednesday and Thursday saw local boats out 60m west at the ‘Trench’ successfully catch four marlin. Boats Paraphernalia, Flying Dutchman and Attitude (2) were the successful vessels.

It was January 1989 that angler Malcolm Cowie out of Manu Bay, in a small open tinnie, caught a marlin that really got the Raglan Billfish Game fishing seasons going.

Raglan Sports Fishing Club has recorded a number of great catches, fishes tagged and released since then.

It is darkest Africa off our coast each season, we are still learning what is out there,

like the last few season with good recorded catches of mahimahi. All species of tuna of good size are caught too.

Raglan has no depth off the coast where these fish are caught - we are not in the Waihau Bay league where there is a huge drop off close in shore. Many of our fish are taking lures in just 40 metres of water.

The Hubert Billfish Tournament has been running for several seasons now. Supporting sponsors are the Raglan Sports Fishing Club and Top Catch Tackle and Bait Shop in Hamilton.

It was upon the death of their father that Barbara and Graham Hubert’s family decided to provide a Fishing Club trophy and money to promote sport fishing out of Raglan.

The Hubert competition runs for each years fishing season. It has been very successful - getting more game boats out on the water each year. This year the prize is $3000 cash, plus fishing tackle to the value of $1000 from Top Catch.

The Tournament is run under IGFA rules and further details are available from the Raglan Sports Fishing Club.

Talented touch teens seek a hand to get to nationals Having the right touch combined with commitment to the game – with training three times a week in Hamilton – has paid off for two Raglan teens who have been selected to compete at the NZ Junior Touch Nationals in Nelson in March.

It’s Jo Meek’s fourth rep year for Waikato and Aragorn PaekauHeke’s first, and while the boys have played regionally it’s the national challenge that’s got them really excited.

Aragorn, who’s also played Waikato rep rugby league, reckons he loves “everything” about touch and Jo particularly likes being part of its six-player sides which, he says, give greater scope for moves than the rugby he’s played previously.

Both 14-year-olds say they got hooked on the sport back at Raglan Area School before moving on to secondary schools in Hamilton.

They are now part of the recently selected 16-strong Waikato U15

Boys Touch team, coached by Gavin Downes whose Waikato team last year placed third at the nationals. Three boys from that team were also chosen to represent NZ in the latest Youth Development Tour held in Australia.

Sporting glory however comes at a price, with players now needing to raise $1400 each to help cover the cost of the three-day comp in mid-March.

The Raglan pair – both guitarists – plan to busk downtown, and to get into the new “scratchy” fundraising craze from America which has people donating amounts from 50c to $3 through a special Scratch & Help booklet.

Why are Maui’s Dolphins so special?

The world’s smallest dolphin, Maui’s are critically endangered with only about 100 dolphins remaining… One human-related death would be one too many. It is likely that the species would not survive the loss. Why? Maui’s dolphins are slow breeders, and breed just enough to replace the number of dolphins that die naturally.

Maui’s dolphins live on the West Coast of the North Island from Dargaville to New Plymouth in shallow coastal waters where they are vulnerable to fishing nets and boats. Maui’s also suffer from degradation of their habitat by pollution, overfishing, climate change, and more.

If you see a stranded or dead Maui’s dolphin, please report it right away to the Department of Conservation - on 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).

To report illegal set nets or other fisheries infringements, call the Ministry of Fisheries on 0800 4 POACHER (0800 4 76224).

Seed Of The Month: Purslane Succulent, zesty tasting leaves and drought resistance make this an attractive option for the summer salad garden.

Sow seed every few weeks through summer for continuous supply. Wild purslane (see pic) grows locally in sandy paddocks, in cracks in the pavement and on driveways. Maui’s are only just over a meter long and have a rounded dorsal fin (shaped like a Mickey Mouse ear!). They hang out in pods of one to five. Most dolphins are seen by boaters and surfers. In the summer they come quite close to shore. Keep your eye out for Maui’s Dolphins when you’re on the water, you might be fortunate enough to see one near Raglan! ‘
