To the Editor The Raglan Maori Wardens were responsible for traffic management over the weekend of January 8th, 9th and 10th during the Soundsplash event.

It was a very busy weekend.

On average we directed approximately 100 cars an hour and close to 1000 cars a day, managing traffic over the bridge as well as overseeing parking at the event venue. There was not one traffic incident over the whole weekend. Thank you to the Raglan community for their cooperation as well as the organisers of Soundsplash and Police for their outstanding work.

As a side note, Raglan Police and the council have delegated the Raglan Maori Wardens to oversee the management of bicycles and skateboards on the footpath on Bow Street.

If you are caught riding a skateboard or any other wheeled recreational device in this area you will be asked to hop off and walk. Under the bylaw an authorised officer of the council or the police can impound your skateboard for up to five days and there could be a fine not exceeding $50.00 to have the skateboard returned.

New shops amplify town’s vitality

N

ew shops have opened in Raglan during the summer break, adding to the vibrancy of the town centre.

There are two new shops – a bakery and a dressmaker’s – in Bankart St; two new pop-up shops in the building that’s still known, by locals, as Vinnie’s, in Wainui Rd; and a shoe shop in Bow St, where Frocking Gorgeous once was.

Alessandro Miraglia, who used to work as a chef at the Harbour View Hotel for three years, opened Dolci, based on European-style baking, on January 1, next door to Cyclery Raglan.

“I am a baker so I have come back to do what I really like to do,” he says.

Alessandro, moved to Raglan with his partner, Valentina Piggoza, about five years ago and makes pastries, breads and pizzas, and will make birthday and wedding cakes to order.

His shop is open from about 6.30am7am, seven days a week.

He says he had been looking for a place to open his bakery for some time, and being on Bankart St is “very affordable”.

So are his loaves of bread, at $4 a pop.

Baking bread is just flour, yeast and water, he says. “You need to do it properly,

with some love, if you want people to buy it.”

Next door to him, dressmaker Dominique Lecourtois is starting to get up and running with her new shop, called Lecourtois Couture, and plans to be open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm.

Dominique, who is from Montreal and has lived in Raglan for 11 years, says she had been working from home for a while, and she makes “wedding dresses, merino lounge wear … anything really”.

“I also sell very good skin cream, locally made, and prints from a local photographer, as well.”

She also plans to sell jewellery and leather goods.

In Bow St, Mikala Walshe has opened her third Mavis & Mick shoe shop, selling high-end European shoes.

Mikala lives in Te Awamutu, where she has one of her shops – the other is in Waihi Beach.

“I love everything about shoes. I am all about colour, comfort and size range,” says Mikala, who herself sports a colourful and funky hairstyle, in pink and white.

Mikala has had a colourful career, too, including working as an air hostess, for clothing designer Annah Stretton, and

being a sharemilker with 200 cows. She says living overseas, in Italy and Spain, is where she got her passion for shoes.

In her shop, “everything is from Europe, everything is leather, and everything is amazing on the foot”.

For local customers, Mikala says she will do a deal, where customers can pay half of the price now, and walk out the door with the shoes, and then “drip feed me”.

That’s because, she says, “someone might come in the door and really like those Laura Bellarivas for $410 but they might not have $410 right now”. She doesn’t want to begrudge anyone an awesome pair of shoes!

Mavis & Mick started up in the old office of Bow Street Motors just before Christmas and moved to its new premises nearly two weeks ago. Mikala plans to be open every day, from 10am to 5pm.

“It’s a low-key shop but high end.”

Around the corner in Wainui Rd, Denise Fort has set up her new studio in part of the old Vinnie’s building, moving in just before Christmas.

“It’s a beautiful space, and it has these beautiful French doors,” says Denise, who has a lease for one year.

She says there has been more foot traffic into her shop than at her old space behind Frocking Gorgeous.

“It was super busy (over Christmas), and it’s difficult working every day. You have to stick it out. I’m looking forward to a bit of a break, but then there will come again a time when you ask: Where are the people?”

Next door, Channelle Ruawai is selling vintage clothing in pop-up shop 2nd Life VTG. Channelle, who also sells her clothes online, says she has the space for only a short time. Her father, Brian Ruawai, had leased the building as his office for running the Soundsplash festival but only uses the upstairs area.

She says her time in the pop-up shop will probably end next month.

“I want to find another space if I can.

The shop is really great for the young people.”

Meanwhile, the new Turkish restaurant in Bow St is still waiting sign-off from the Waikato District Council, but will be open soon.

Freelance film-maker Maryann Tuao is supporting prominent and emerging artists by promoting them in an online digital documentary series.

Online documentary series puts spotlight on emerging artists in Raglan 15-minute episodes showcasing workshops held by six established artists teaching their skills and knowledge to youth.

The artists are Paul Bradley, photographer Mark Hamilton, weaver Ruth Port, dancer Patti Mitchley, ta moko artist Simon Te Wheoro and carver Aaron Kereopa.

“I wanted to focus on the community arts and how it impacts on the youth,” says Maryann.

“It’s also telling the artists’ stories and their heritage, and what influences their work. We have prominent artists and emerging artists and their journeys.

“But the main focus is on youth. To give youth support in the work they are doing. It’s a bit of mentorship, to build their leadership skills, and to give them guidance.”

By teaching them the necessary skills in their craft, they can then begin to help other youth, Maryann says.

Maryann says emerging artists are also helping her to film the series.

Her niece, Kaea Ruawai, 17, who has been studying art at Hamilton Girls’ High School, has been helping her with the interview process, while Tatum Uchiha Kingi, who attended South Seas Film & TV School, is helping with the filming.

Maryann hopes the project, which will go online later this year, will spark enough interest to get funding for another series.

In the meantime she has local support from Raglan Bakery, Raglan Social Club, Aloha Sushi Takeaways, Living Productions and Soundsplash.

Dates for two of the workshops have already been set.

Artist Paul Bradley is holding public art workshops at the Soundsplash office, 7 Wainui Rd, from January 22-24 in which four young artists will collaborate in designing a mural for the Kopua Domain changing shed.

Paul, who has helped other community groups to create murals, theatre, sculpture, exhibitions and arts events, will mentor the group through the design process and subsequent painting of the shed.

The photography workshop by Mark Hamilton is to be held on January 30, also at the Soundsplash office, and will include theory and practical sessions.

An exhibition of resulting work will follow, to be held at Matapihi Art Gallery.

Then, she created a series of calendars featuring Raglan artists. The online digital series of Raglan Creative revisits those original artists – but this time in support of the emerging artists.

“It’s something I have been wanting to do for ages,” says Maryann, of filming the online documentary series.

She started to work on the series in winter last year, after taking a bit of a break from freelance film-making because “I found the markets really fickle”.

The latest film she worked on was the 2014 New Zealand Film Festival awardwinning short Ross and Beth, directed by Hamish Bennett and which starred Maryann’s nephew, Reiki Ruawai.

She says Raglan Creative will be a quality online series, targeting young people, the community and visitors to Raglan.

“It’s about showing youth in good light, and highlighting a different talent – we always hear a lot about the surfing.”

raham Hannah wanted a “funeral” and that’s what he got.

Hundreds flocked to his Cliff Street home last Friday – abandoning funeral black in favour of colourful party garb – to give the events supremo the kind of sendoff that would have made him proud.

A chalked blackboard notice on the front porch directed people to ‘The Grand Finale’ along a petal-strewn path, past a water feature and around to a back garden festooned with coloured flags and parasols.

Three big screens and a stage completed the setting for a celebration of Graham’s life, which saw him create a series of big and successful events in the Waikato over 40 years.

Described at the send-off by his eldest daughter Rebecca as a “visionary”, Graham set up Hannah & Associates in 1975 and opened a large Hamilton-based building display centre – one of the first in New Zealand – which became the forerunner to the now hugely successful Waikato Home & Garden Show for which he’s best remembered.

Graham sold the show, and retired, only last November after running it at Claudelands for 31 years. In an ironic twist, the farewell heard on Friday, Graham had

joked at the time that the many well-wishes he’d received read like something of an obituary.

Friends and business colleagues Larry and Kathy Park painted a picture Graham’s colourful early life. Born in Harrogate, England, he travelled the world – picking up tricks of the trade working bazaars in Istanbul and markets in India – before settling in Sydney in the 60s then moving to Hamilton in the 70s, where he married and had three children.

Back then there were few restaurants and most shops were closed at the weekends, the Parks recounted. For Graham, it was a “golden opportunity” to flex his marketing muscles.

After a stint on a lifestyle block in Whatawhata supplying wool from his black sheep to spinners and weavers selling their wares to craft markets, he moved on to transforming a 4000 sq m commercial space in Anglesea Street into a showroom for manufacturers of building products.

Graham was now “in his element” and in 1985, on the back of that success, he launched the Waikato Home Show at what was then the Claudelands Showgrounds, making it bigger and better every year.

Raglan hosts karate seminar Last weekend, Raglan was host to the first NZ Traditional Shotokan Karate-do Federation (TSKF) seminar of the year.

Members from dojos in Taranaki, Manukau, Wellington, Turangi, Hinetangi Bay and Raglan attended the two-day training seminar held by 7th-dan black belt chief instructor Mark Willis (Turangi).

The seminar included squad training for the ISKF World Shoto Cup 2016, which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa during 18 to 21 August this year.

TSKF Raglan started up last year and have their trainings on Tuesday and Thursday every week from 5-6pm. TSKF operates their dojo with the philosophy to; seek perfection of character, endeavour, respect others and to refrain from violent behaviour.

the Waikato Home & Garden Show, and last year Graham was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Events & Exhibition Association of Australasia.

He also masterminded at various stages over the years the likes of the NZ International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta – the forerunner to Balloons Over Waikato – The Great NZ Food & Wine Festival and the Autumn HomeXPO. Friends and family who spoke at his Friday afternoon send-off attributed Graham’s success to the motto by which he lived: ‘What the mind can see and believe, it can achieve’.

Son Linden said it was the best advice any father could give, and it was backed up by “the sharpest business plans”. He remembered how his father’s ideas often came to fruition over a leisurely bottle or two of red wine with friends, but also mentioned a life lived in the fast lane driving helter-skelter through Hamilton in his Ford Capri.

Rebecca, who worked with her dad on the Waikato Home & Garden Show and has continued as event director with its new owners North Port Events, remembered Graham as a best friend and mentor who worked and partied hard. She also spoke of his hearty laugh and “infectious” sense of merriment.

“He was the creator of unique exhibitions and events,” she added, “and we’ve done this one last spectacular for you, Dad.” Soulmate Melanie Carroll spoke of how she and Graham always believed they were “lucky” to find each other, and of their “instant attraction”. She told of coming to live in Graham’s harbourside cottage within a month of meeting him, and of their mutual love for Raglan. “We were continually on holiday here,” she said, “right here at this property.”

The property backs onto the town’s bowling green, which was conveniently opened up beyond the fenceline to allow for extra seating during Graham’s send-off.

Along with the many memories from his family and friends – and a photographic tribute – Graham’s grand finale last Friday afternoon included a poem read by granddaughter Paige and musical numbers from local singer-songwriter Kate Martin and an Italian friend of Graham’s, Massimo Giurioli.

Longtime local recording artist Dave Maybee and company also played into the evening, and the party spilled out onto Cliff Street during the weekend where picnic tables were set up across the road under the predominantly Pohutukawa trees.

Stairmand claims hat-trick victory at Nationals The rise of surfing in New Zealand and the lack of surfboard shops at the time, meant surfers were left to their own devices when it came to making boards–forced to hone the skills for their newfound passion in their own backyards.

national title at the 2016 Billabong National Surfing Championships presented by Health 2000, held at St Clair Beach, Dunedin.

By claiming the title, Billy has equalled the New Zealand record of five titles that is held

by Auckland surfers Wayne Parkes and Iain Buchanan. 1987 was the last time a hat-trick of victories has been achieved (Iain Buchanan).

The day got off to a slow start as competitors waited for the building swell. By 10:30am conditions were contestable and the swell increased to 2.0m by the time the premier finals of the event were held late in the afternoon. A variable onshore breeze persisted throughout the day.

Billy went head-to-head with good friend and shaper, Luke Hughes, in the final.

Luke lead early in the 30 minute final but Billy’s ability to lift in the big finals of the National Championships is well known and Saturday was no different. He built his scores first with an 8.77 then a 9.13 and a 9.03 to take the lead leaving his closest opponent, Luke, needing a near perfect 9.58 point ride for victory.

“Starting the year off with a win is always good and to have my name on that trophy with all those amazing surfers like Al Byrne, Wayne Parkes, Iain Buchanan, Maz and Jay Quinn is crazy, I am stoked to win any day but Nationals is always amazing” exclaimed Stairmand.

“Hughesy kept me on my feet at the start, he is my shaper and I couldn’t let him win but he started off with two eight point rides and I knew I had to step it up. The waves just kept on pumping and pumping and I am just so stoked the waves were good for our final and let me have the opportunity to show my best surfing and eventually win” he added.

Billy is heading to Hawaii in the next two weeks to start his international campaign at the Volcom Pipe Masters so to win here this week is a good confidence boost. “I am nervous going over for that event but I have surfed some good waves down here outside of the competition and I am aiming for a good result” said Billy who hopes to meet up with New Zealand’s top ranked surfer Ricardo Christie during the first event of the year.

Billy finished the final with an 18.17 point heat total, Hughes unable to further his 16.40 point heat start but still finishing runner up and producing his career best result.

Aside from Peter Miller and a few others, one of the first on the scene was Mike Court in the early ‘60s. Making boards out of old refrigerator packing foam, which they shaped with cheese scrapers. Mike was also the first to open up shop doing ding repairs around 1962, because no one else in the country was doing them.

Don Wilson came along a few years later, getting his start by building boards for himself. A builder by trade, crafting a surfboard seem to come naturally to him. He worked as a shaper in the late ‘60s and eventually started his own surf shop around 1970. Don moved his shop to Raglan in 1973 where he established the first surf shop in Raglan, Wilson Surfboards.

Wilson Surfboards was first located where the current INDI’s is. Don had teamed up with G Crowhurst (Crowie) and Kevin McKell, a pair whose influence inspired the shape and designs of many of the boards the team was producing.

In 1975 they moved to the top of Bow Street where the current Bow Street Gallery is. Wilson Surfboards operated for the next 10 years from there.

There was a mini factory in the back with the shop in front. Don reckons they were making five custom boards a week throughout the year, ten boards a week through the summer. He even spent some time making the occasional windsurfer. (Don and Mike Court were the first to make windsurfers in NZ, and

windsurfing in NZ first took place in Raglan.)

“The innovations and inspirations for our boards were influenced by all different people, some of who are still around Raglan today,” Don said in a recent phone conversation. “It was a learning program for everyone.”

Boys would come in the shop from school with board plans they had drawn up in class and they would get to work.

One design that has stuck with him was an offset board, with the rail on one side bigger than the other. “...made it better for driving off the bottom.”

Don would write letters to friends in Australia to get their input on the work he was doing and wait for their feedback about what was being created over there.

When Mark Richards rolled through Raglan with a twin-fin under 6’, Don’s designs changed again. He recalls being out in the surf with dozens of Australian’s and American’s at the time [most of who had made their way to NZ to avoid the draft and got hooked on the surf.] It was an era of ever-changing shapes and sizes, in an attempt to get that perfect ride.

In those days, a 4-ounce glass seemed nice and light and leg ropes were simply being tied to a hole through the fin. The current leg rope design came about in the mid-‘70s, a nylon rope attached to the surfboard, designed in Raglan by Peter Wright. The urethane design was modelled after Peter’s design, and would later be patented by an Australian in 1977.

The evolution of surf in Raglan does not surprise Don. “After Endless Summer, we all knew Raglan was going to be famous.”

Raglan is now home to a buzzing community of shapers. A collective, ran out of mini factories, garages and backyards. Independently dependent on one thing, the surf. And although the quality of the materials has changed over the years and designs have progressed, the passion remains the same.

The surfing competition of the 8th biannual Tainui-Waikato Games was held over the weekend at Manu Bay. With the message of give a surfing a go, the

focus was on getting out in the surf and having a good time as a family.

Around 80 surfers from 11 marae entered the competition this year, around 25 of them being children – some of them surfing for the first time.

Thursday 21st and 28th we have Jonah Lake gracing the Yotty. Jonah was here two years ago and impressed all with his surf reggae soul guitar playing and singing.

Something a little different is going down at The Yotty this Friday. Canadian trumpet supremo Mike Field brings his amazing band for a night of great music with Local DJ B-Rex setting the scene and playing before and after.

I hope all jazz and music fans out there come along and support this world renowned muso and his awesome band.

Legendary emcee TALI (NZ) returns to The Yot on Saturday and brings another amazing vocalist Georgie Fisher along for the ride. Last time she was here she was incredible! We’ve got a feeling this time is going to be even better. Tali and Georgie will be playing individual one hour sets with local DJ Ras Drulox bringing the party before and after.

The Sunday session this week features two of the Countries most up and coming DJs/ producers Stack and Piece playing the after 10pm part in the Club with local selectors Jamin-i, Bobo and Dubsonic outside from 4.20pm.

The Yot Club has some huge acts coming up through the long weekends and other weekends beyond: On Friday the 29th Melbourne band Cheshire Grimm (who have pretty solid Raglan connections) will be playing with Auckland band Thin White Lines. The 30th has local funksters Mighty Mighty playing with a surprise support act plus DJ B-Rex. The Sunday Session on Auckland Anniversary weekend will be huge. Ex Kora man Laughton Kora along with Shapeshifter

MC P-Diggs will be performing live outside then they will be heading inside to do the DJ/ MC thing. Expect a massive night!

Waitangi Friday the 5th brings Sola Rosa to town. Long time Raglan favourites, this gig will sell out so get in early - tickets at the video shop. Waitangi Day we will be doing a similar night as last year, celebrating Bob Marley’s birthday with local bands playing early and selectors Ras Drulox and Jamin-i dropping tunes all night.

The Sunday session on the 7th Feb (Waitangi weekend) will feature one of the worlds highest profile house/techno DJs/ producers Ian Pooley. This German legend tours the world and we are are pretty happy about enticing him to Raglan.

The week after that brings Dutch band My Baby back to Raglan. All you who have seen them in their last visits know how exceptional these guys are. Well the last year has seen them scale new heights. playing huge festivals in Europe, selling out one of the rock worlds most iconic venues in Paradiso and playing 10,000 capacity plus venues through England with Seasick Steve. These guys of the best bands I have ever seen and judging by the amount of people who have hit me up, I know a lot of you agree. Only confirmed date is Saturday the 13th Febuary but these guys adore Raglan so there may be extra shows.

Friday the 19th brings Sydney punk band Nerdlinger with NZ support. Saturday the 20th brings Raglan favourites the Sunshine Soundsystem to town.

Finally, before the end of March we will see favourite bands both from the Yot and Soundsplash grace the stage including Surrey Boudit, The Acetones, Fireshark, Wave Pigs, L. A. B. and Weird Together Yotty is open from 6ish Wed-Sunday for free pool, great pizza, good sounds plus all the above top line entertainment!
