Another  highlight  saw  Marcus  put  in  charge  RI WKH ÂżOPÂśV DQLPDO GHSDUWPHQW IRU D IHZ GD\V in  the  absence  of  its  usual  head.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  had  to  make  sure  everything  was  in  the  right  place  at  the  right  time,  talk  to  the  directors  â&#x20AC;Ś  lots  of  responsibility  I  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  used  to. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  was  a  pretty  good  job  alright,â&#x20AC;?  Marcus  says  of  his  time  in  the  industry,  which  started  back  in  October  2010  and  ran  till  Christmas  2011  but  with  both  summer  and  winter  breaks.  A  basic  wage  of  $1600  a  week,  plus  overtime  for  those  12-­hour  days,  made  it  â&#x20AC;&#x153;alrightâ&#x20AC;?  too  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  not  to  mention  being  put  up  in  a  plush  house  rent  free  by  Three  Foot  Seven,  the  company  behind  the  trilogy.

Three  foot  seven,  he  adds,  is  the  size  of  a  hobbit.

Marcus  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  only  now  free  to  talk  of  his  big-­screen  experiences  because  he  had  to  sign  a  FRQÂżGHQWLDOLW\ DJUHHPHQW Âą VD\V KLV NLGV DJHG nine  and  13  got  a  kick  out  of  seeing  their  dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  QDPH UROO LQ WKH FUHGLWV DW WKH HQG RI WKH ÂżUVW movie  when  it  was  released  last  month.

Raglan analyst joins project tracking slum communities in Phnom Penh Helping develop a database in Phnom Penh may not be everyone’s idea of fun at a time when many Kiwis are still enjoying their summer holidays but for Raglan man Darryl Gillgren there are compensations – among them the Cambodian food and knocking back “the occasional cold Angkor beer”.

The semi-­retired senior geographical information systems analyst embarked last week on a life-­changing

volunteer experience in Cambodia where he will use his professional skills on a project that assists urban communities at risk of eviction.

During his 12-­month volunteer placement with Engineers Without Borders Australia he’ll be attached to local Cambodian organisation Sahmakum Teang Tnaut (STT), which advocates for slum dwellers and provides technical support in land rights issues.

STT works with communities that have been evicted or are under the threat of eviction and helps

provide mapping, legal and other evidence of residents’ rights to the land. Since 1990 more than 100,000 people have been displaced through forced evictions in the area.

Darryl’s role involves working on a database project that tracks all current and former urban poor settlements in Phnom Penh.

His role includes developing the database that currently exists and training the local staff to maintain and update the database.

This research and LQIRUPDWLRQ SURMHFW ± WKH ¿UVW of its kind in Phnom Penh –

allows STT to monitor urban change, track communities and access adequate information to advocate for their rights.

Darryl is the third Engineers Without Borders volunteer to be placed with STT. Asked about why he signed up, he said: “I hope to build on and strengthen the relationships and understanding brought about by the involvement of organisations such as Engineers Without Borders with their partners in the developing world.”

But he added: “Personally I am excited about living in

a different culture, learning a different language, and embracing the Cambodian food with the occasional cold Angkor Beer.”

This week we continue our occasional series that focuses on families that have chosen to make Raglan their new home.

When Keri Bolton-­Oetzel and John Oetzel relocated to New Zealand from the States, it was a move of many contrasts. The couple and their two boys, Spencer and Ethan, had been living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but a desire for a slower way of life led them to swap the dry, dusty desert for the laidback lifestyle of Raglan.

John, a professor in the Department of Management Communication at the University of Waikato, and Keri, a professor in psychology, made the shift nearly two years ago. Here’s their story: Why did you choose to live in Raglan?

John: We were looking to leave Albuquerque. We decided to have me search for a job and there was an opening in Waikato. The more I found out, the more I liked it.

Keri: I looked at a map and found Raglan. I said, “When you go, see if it’s somewhere we could live.”

Keri: I was born and raised in Los Angeles. If I was going to move around the world, it was important to me to be around water.

Is there anything you miss about life in the States?

Keri: The only things I miss are family and friends.

Our boys have a good relationship with my mum and her partner;; we Skype and send care packages. We’re fortunate to be able to travel quite a bit. I have two research projects in the States that I’m still working on, so we travel back for work and see family too.

John: The green chilli of New Mexico. You have it in everything – pasta, burgers, veggie burgers.

Do you feel you’ve achieved a better work/life balance since making the move?

Keri: In the States we were both teaching full-­ time, involved in research and being parents. When

They’ve become quite engrained in Keri: We’ve met some really the community. Spencer does karate amazing people. I love the diversity at the Town Hall, they both play – there are so many different people soccer. They took a Surf Lifesaver here, everyone gets along and class yesterday. They were learning it’s friendly. It’s a really unique to boogie board and they rode a community for that. And the wave. The  value  to  Raglan  of  the  Westpac  Waikato  Air  Ambulance  was  underlined  last  week  when  the  familiar  red  and  yellow  chopper  was  called  out  to  accidents  here  three  times  in  only  two  days.

Meridian recognises the special contribution local communities make to our hydro and wind operations, and to the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s electricity sector.

The Meridian Te Uku Community Fund gives your community a say on what local initiatives are supported and funded by Meridian. The Fund, managed by a panel of community members and Meridian staff, is about working together to build strong communities.

Letters Dear  Editor, We  would  like  to  convey  a  BIG  THANK  YOU  to  Graham  Hubert  for  his  commitment  in  organising  the  "Inaugural  Gals  N  Gurnard  Fishing  Tournament",  which  was  held  at  the  Raglan  Club  last  Saturday  night. $OWKRXJK WKH ÂżVKLQJ FRQGLWLRQV GLG QRW IDYRXU XV ÂżVKRV RU VKRXOG WKDW EH ÂżVKHWWHV DQG ZH ZHUH unable  to  "Show  Our  Gurnard",  the  entertaining  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dry  Drawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  night  was  a  hoot.  Especially  with  the  innovation  of  "The  Cupboard"  and  challenges  like  "the  Gurnard  Grunt".

It  was  great  to  see  so  many  local  and  visiting  lady  anglers,  who  had  gone  to  a  lot  of  effort  to  compete  for  the  "Best  Dressed  Team",   with  costumes  ranging  from  Cats,  to  gurnards,  to  pirates,  etc.  Our  team  have  already  started  to  plan  next  year's  costumes.

Cheers,  The  Tutu  Girls,  Raglan To  the  Editor, The  article  on  the  Green  familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  camping  tradition  in  Raglan  mentioned  camping  at  Whale  Bay  and  brought  back  happy  memories  of  a  time  when  the  bay  was  one  of  the  most  popular  beaches  in  Raglan   due  to  the  foresight  of  our  tupuna  Riria  Rapana  Kereopa.  In  order  to  pay  her  rates,  Riria  established  21  year  leases  and  also  charged  people  to  access  the  bay  through  her  land.   One  of  my  jobs  as  a  child  was  to  take  my  turn  sitting  on   the  gate   collecting    2  shillings  from  cars   who  wanted  to   park  on  the Â

whanau  land  to  access  the  lagoon  for  picnics.       That  access  was  closed  tothe  public  in  the   mid  1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  when  our  uncle   Sam  Kereopaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s    stock  were  chased  and  injured,  and   people  began  to  leave  their  rubbish  and  disrespect  the  area.     On  Sunday,  current   descendants  of  Riria  Rapana  Kereopa  met  to  discuss  the  land,  its  past   and  its  future  and  decided  to  once  again  allow  the  public  access  on  a  trial  EDVLV DW $QQLYHUVDU\ ZHHNHQG -DQXDU\ ,I LWV ZHW WKH RSHQ GD\V ZLOO be  postponed  to  February  8  and  9.     For   a  fee  of  $5  per  car  or  $2  per  motorbike  or  walking  adult,  the  public  can  once  again  enter,  park  on  the  land  and  access  the  lagoon  and  the  Indicators  through  the  Rapana  Kawharu  Kereopa  land  at  46  Whaanga  Road.  The  gate  opens  at  8am  and  closes  at  8pm.   Money  collected  from  the  public   will  be  spent  on  weed  control  and   possibly  establishing  basic  toilet  facilities  as  there  are  currently  no  public  toilets  in  the  Whale  Bay  area.      Naturally  rules  apply  that  include  sticking  to  the  marked  tracks,   leaving  dogs,  drugs,  alcohol  at  home  and  taking  all  belongings  including  personal   rubbish  out  of  the  bay.   There  is  a  limit  to  how  many  cars  can  park  in  the  land  above  the  bay.   Once  that  is  reached  no  further  vehicles  will  be  allowed  in.  If  people  show  they  can  respect  the  place,  then  further  open  days  and  possibly  basic  camping  could  eventually  return  to  the  bay  alleviating  some  of  the  pressure  on  other  beaches  around  Whaingaroa.  Perhaps  the  Greens  may  want  to  take  the  opportunity  to  come  and  revisit  the  bay  and   introduce  themselves  to  Ririaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  descendants.  Angeline  Greensill,  Raglan

But  Mother  Nature  had  different  ideas  and  Cyclone  Evan  hit  Fijiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  main  island,  on  which  Denerau  is  sited,  during  their  stay.   But  only  after  theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  arrived  PLG 'HFHPEHU GLG WKH QLJKWPDUH WKUHH GD\ OHDG XS WR WKH FDWHJRU\ 4  cyclone  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  which  had  already  devastated  parts  of  Samoa  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  begin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  do  anything,â&#x20AC;?  lamented  Janet,  as  Fiji  prepared  for  the  predicted  onslaught  and  the  beautiful  weather  became  increasingly  violent.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing  could  prepare  us  for  the  wind,â&#x20AC;?  she  recalled,  even  though  they  jokingly  compared  it  to  a  bad  day  in  Te  Mata  where  the  Vernons  farmed  for  years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A  bit  warmer  I  think,â&#x20AC;?  she  added  wryly.

The  cyclone  was  in  â&#x20AC;&#x153;full  roarâ&#x20AC;?  and  the  noise  â&#x20AC;&#x153;horrendousâ&#x20AC;?  when  the  trio  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  bored  from  another  day  FRQÂżQHG WR WKH LQGRRUV Âą PDGH their  way  one  evening  under  covered  walkways  from  their  villa  to  the  Sheraton  hotel  which Â

And  by  the  time  they  were  ready  to  return  to  their  villa  â&#x20AC;&#x153;a  burly  Fijian  staff  member  was  detailed  to  hold  our  hands  tightly  to  escort  us  home  through  the  stormâ&#x20AC;?.

Janet  also  remembers  their  ¿QDO GD\ LQ )LML Âą LQ WKH DIWHUPDWK of  the  cyclone  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  as  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;freakyâ&#x20AC;?  experience  with  a  complete  breakdown  in  communication.  No  power,  no  landline  phones  working,  no  cellphone  coverage  and  no  internet.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  take  it  all  for  granted,â&#x20AC;?  she  says.

And  to  see  the  damage  outside  the  security  of  the  Sheraton  buildings,  which  had  suffered  RQO\ VXSHU¿FLDOO\ ZDV VREHULQJ

â&#x20AC;&#x153;A  concrete  pathway  along  the  seawall  was  shattered  with  lumps  of  concrete  strewn  around  like  crooked  mosaic,â&#x20AC;?  said  Janet.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;And  water  had  spilled  over  WKH VHDZDOO DQG Ă&#x20AC;RRGHG QHDUE\ JURXQG Ă&#x20AC;RRU URRPV â&#x20AC;&#x153;But  it  was  the  trees  and  gardens  that  suffered  the  greatest  damage,â&#x20AC;?  she  says.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Huge  trees  snapped  in  half  or  uprooted.  Palms  sticking  up  like  toothpicks,  devoid  of  fronds.  Paths  unpassable,  pools  of  vegetation.â&#x20AC;?

Janet  was  amazed  though  at  how  staff  and  visitors  alike  set  to  work  immediately,  clearing  in  the  wake  of  the  cyclone.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;They  took  WKH ELJ FOHDQ XS LQ WKHLU VWULGH ´ And  she  and  Trev  made  it  back  to  Raglan  barely  a  day  later  WKDQ SODQQHG FDWFKLQJ D Ă&#x20AC;LJKW almost  as  soon  as  Nadi  Airport  reopened. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  was  an  interesting  experience,â&#x20AC;?  Janet  says  now  RI WKHLU LOO IDWHG KROLGD\ Âł:H were  very  lucky  to  be  in  secure  buildings  with  great  emergency  backup.  Many  Fijians  faced  this  in  less  secure  surroundings.â&#x20AC;?
