The Sports Project: A series of Q & A’s with top sportspeople in our community

Guillaume Gignoux is a familar face to young Raglanites and their parents as he has coached tennis for many years over the summer months. The Chronicle caught up with Guillame who grew up in France to find out more about his background, why he chose Raglan and his passion for sport.

How did you end up living in Raglan?

Travelled to NZ in 1999. I wanted to visit the country where you could surf and ski on the same day and I fell in love with the place then. It took me a few years of travel, but I came back permanently in 2005.

Best traveling experience?

Probably my first trip here, everything changed after I discovered Raglan.

Ruapuke venue again for a summer music festival

uapuke will reverberate to the beat of reggae next month when the beach motor camp again hosts a full-on music festival, just three years on from the last Boardies & Bikinis – the Tractor FM event silenced by bureaucratic red tape.

The new, three-day Ruapuke Roots Garden Festival – billed as New Zealand’s first ever dedicated reggae sound system event and now nine months in the planning – promises not only three sound systems set up in one arena but also a plethora of live acts featuring local and internationally recognised artists in a second arena.

Organisers are promising that an “exciting” final lineup of acts will be announced very soon for the festival, which will be staged the weekend after Waitangi Weekend when Boardies & Bikinis was traditionally held.

But it won’t be all bass guitars and offbeat rhythms. “There’ll be lots of variation for people who aren’t there (just) for reggae,” says co-organiser Michael Robins, an analog film photographer and video maker originally from Wellington but now permanently on the road.

He mentions the likes of yoga workshops and children’s storytimes, a magician and local celebrity chef Jimmy Boswell running a one-off Caribbean foodstand.

Describing himself as “floating”, Michael has a housebus in New Zealand

and a housetruck in Europe where, he says, he regularly tours the non-commercial festivals with partner Renee Palamountain.

The couple, along with friend and fellow event organiser Josh Llwellwyn – always on the lookout for “beautiful” festival locations – have had equal input in getting this roots festival off the ground.

And it’s Ruapuke’s rugged coastline that’s caught their eye as the ideal location.

“Ruapuke has the infrastructure to host an event,” Michael explains, “and the locals (immediate neighbours) are keen and excited to be involved.”

Michael told the Chronicle they’ve continued in the kaupapa originated from both Boardies & Bikinis at Ruapuke, and Raglan’s successful Soundsplash eco reggae festival for years before that at Wainui Reserve.

A relaxed “walkabout” crowd – with about 80 percent camping on site – is expected at the festival. Early Bird tickets have already sold out but organisers wouldn’t be drawn on exact numbers of tickets up for grabs, preferring instead to call it an “intimately-sized” festival with a green ethos.

Festival partners include Lion Rockers Hi-Fi from Piha, Kindred Sound System from Christchurch and I-Livity I-Fi from Germany which has its sound system currently being shipped to New Zealand for the Ruapuke event and another 90 minutes’ north of Auckland at Te Arai.

Together – according to Eventfinda – they comprise some of the finest selectors,

producers and MCs around, and will showcase “a wide spectrum of reggae and bass music on a host of outernational and local custom-built sound systems”.

Enthusiasm for an event such as this, Michael explains, has come from the idea – born in the ’50s in Jamaica – of a reggae sound system which projects hifi at the highest quality level possible, as was intended by studio producers and musicians.

Since then, he adds, the culture has travelled to the UK, spread through Europe, Latin America and, in the past decade, down to the Pacific.

Meantime, Auckland’s Perfect Sound Solutions – another partner in the venture – will provide the sound system for the live stage.

Festival organisers are working with local recycling centre Xtreme Zero Waste to attain – or surpass – Raglan’s 75 percent landfill diversion rate over the three days.

“Like our passion for music, they also have the same passion for turning waste into a resource and we are looking forward to making recycling a fun and educational exercise for our crowd,” says Michael.

After the roots festival wraps up some of the top acts are expected to continue on to perform at the Yot Club’s Sunday Session downtown in Raglan.

Restricted fire season now in place A introduced for rural areas of

restricted fire season will be

Waikato district from Saturday 10 January with permits required for all open-air fires.

Principal Rural Fire Officer, Gordon Bailey, explains the move to a restricted fire season is a result of the climatic conditions over the past few weeks.

“We’ve had limited rain with high temperatures across the district and this contributes to a rapid increase in fireweather danger levels. With these conditions there is a risk of fires spreading particularly if we have strong winds – they can make fire behaviour extremely unpredictable.” Mr Bailey says anyone lighting fires must do so in a responsible manner, ensuring they’re safe, will not spread or cause any smoke

nuisance to neighbours or nearby road users.

“It’s timely to remind people that any costs incurred to extinguish fires must be covered by the person responsible for lighting a fire or the landowner.”

Art win just the tonic for painter

irst it was the Christchurch quakes, and now it’s something entirely different – though prompted by the Canterbury devastation – that has Claudia Grutke reeling.

The 48-year-old has taken to working seriously on her large, abstract acrylics only since abandoning earthquake-stricken Christchurch 18 months ago and resettling

in Raglan.

And now the former pharmacist’s been named Chroma Australia Artist of the Year, an accolade that comes with $5000 cash – that’s in Australian currency – and a year’s supply of paints.

She will also be the subject of a Chroma tutorial video that’s bound to give her work added exposure.

A delighted Claudia told the Chronicle

that Raglan was “perfect” and that her move here with her mother had “changed my life”.

She says she stumbled by chance across the Chroma Facebook competition, an annual event open to all artists – from New Zealand, Australia, the US, Great Britain and Canada – using Chroma paints and mediums to create their works.

And she confesses it took months for her to work up the courage to submit her first painting.

Claudia’s winning entry, ‘Wild Wind’, was actually the first of three paintings she submitted in the latter half of last year. That work received August’s Judges’ Choice monthly award – determined by “highlevel, practising artists” – making it eligible for the end-of-year online exhibition.

Her following works, in September and October, received honourable mentions.

But even so she was shocked to get a phone call just before Christmas with the news she’d been named by Chroma Australia as Artist of the Year. “I didn’t expect it,” she admits.

She suspects it’s her particular way of using Chroma’s artists’ paints – with a palette knife to achieve a different or unique result – that may have given her an edge. She also revealed that “I sometimes use a little bit of rust or sand as well”.

Chroma said her creativity and talent “impressed all the jurors” in a contest they described as “very, very difficult” to judge.

The award is a huge honour and will help her kick-start her new career, says German-born Claudia.

She says her only training in art since school days was some classes she took in Dunedin and Christchurch a decade ago.

Art “just happens” for her, she explains.

“And I can’t push creativity aside forever.”

For now she’s looking forward to the upcoming Raglan Arts Weekend, for which part of her and her mother’s Upper Wainui Road home will be transformed into a small gallery. Edith Symes See her work at www.claudiagrutke. com.

From December 1, drink-driving alcohol imits for drivers over the age of 20 were lowered from 400 micrograms (mcg) of alcohol per litre of breath, to 250mcg.

The zero alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 20 years remained the same.

Drivers who offended with between 251-400mcg alcohol faced a fine of $200 and 50 demerit points. Drivers who accummulated 100 or more demerit points from driving offences within two years would be suspended from driving for three months.

Hamilton Police said the message was really getting through to people and for the first time in four years, Waikato was not the region with the highest road toll.

Rock-It Kitchen director Sarah Kay said the law change had had a noticeable effect, with people appearing to be more conscious of drinking and driving and choosing lighter or non-alcohol options or were just consuming fewer alcoholic drinks.

Wine drinkers were now a little pickier with their choice of wine, preferring to have one very good glass of wine, rather

than several glasses of average wine.

As a result, the Rock-It wine list had changed to include a lot more light wines, beers and ciders.

Orca Restaurant and Bar owner Corrina Wells said the low alcohol beer had been selling so well that she was going to put light beer on tap at her bar. Sparkling water had also been selling well.

“As hospitality and bar owners, we need to put more effort into providing nicer non-alcoholic options for people, such as mocktails.”

She’d noticed that couples were now often ordering just one glass of wine each instead of sharing a bottle of wine, and that diners were not ordering the extra drinks, such as liquor coffees.

“What I’ve also noticed is that a lot of people are organising their drivers, which is good. I think the Raglan Shuttle [service] has really helped with that,” Corrina said.

Harbour View Hotel bar manager Clare Brittain said people seemed very aware of how much they were drinking and were making good use of the hotel’s courtesy van.

“Everyone is taking about it [the lower drink-driving alcohol limit]. Definitely it has affected everyone’s drinking. People will only have one drink or have a low alcohol drink,” Clare said.

Bucking the trend was the Raglan Club,

which had seen little change in patrons’ drinking behaviour.

Manager Chris Lourie said he had not noticed a big demand for low alcohol drinks, such as light wines, as people still tended to prefer the full-bodied flavour of the normal wines. However, he intended providing more low alcohol options in future.

Drinkers at the club, which tended to attract more of a local patronage than other Raglan bars and restaurants at this time of year, seemed to be sticking with established habits and drinking about the same.

They were also still making use of the courtesy van to get home safely, Chris said.

Raglan Police reported few alcoholrelated drink-driving arrests over the holiday period.

Constable Dean McMillan said holidaymakers in Raglan had been very well behaved and seemed conscious of the drink-driving alcohol limits and the consequences of being caught over the limit.

“We’re not saying don’t go out and have a drink. It’s about how much you have – that’s what the message is about,” he said.

The public had also been very good at observing the Raglan Liquor Ban in public places between December 23 and January 6, with only a couple of arrests on New Year’s Day. Rachel Benn

Local farmer dies in quad bike accident T

e Akau farmer Tommy Tahinga Rupapere was found dead on Monday just 600 metres from home.

Mr Rupapere, 66, was found about 4am on Monday by his quad bike, after leaving his Te Akau Coast Road home the previous day with two dogs to move stock. Relatives became concerned when he failed to return but one of his dogs did, and a search was subsequently launched.

"We believe he has moved one mob and

then gone back out for another,“ said District Road Policing Manager Inspector Freda Grace.

Mrs Grace said Raglan police, search and rescue teams, relatives and local residents conducted a search for the missing man overnight, eventually finding him under his quad bike in a drain beside the gravel road but out of sight of the road. The other dog was found alive with the bike.

"At this stage it appears the crash has been a single vehicle one, involving only the

quad bike and the really sad aspect of it all was he was found just 600m from his home."

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit and Worksafe NZ were investigating the accident.

In isolated rural properties with poor cellphone reception, farmers who were going out for extended periods of time should consider using two-way radios, set check-in times or arrange welfare checks so that the alarm could be raised when someone was overdue, Mrs Grace said.

Talented Raglan bowler Ashleigh Jeffcoat demonstrates the skill that got her into the finals of the national bowling champs in Auckland this month.

competitor to make the finals of the bowling nationals.

Ashleigh, 15, has just returned from competing in the Heartland Bank National Open Championships in Auckland, where she competed in the women’s open singles, pairs and fours divisions for the first time.

Playing against many bowlers several times her age, she was happy to even qualify for the post section of both the singles, against 128 others, and the doubles, against 98 pairs teams.

But it was in the fours where she excelled in the prestigious 13-day national event.

“We made it to the final and lost by half a bowl,” Ashleigh said. “It was pretty gutting.”

But it was a good start to 2015 for the teenager, who has only been playing bowls for three years. She won the girls’ singles title at the secondary school bowling champs last year, determined to win after coming second the previous year.

Ashleigh was also selected two years in a row for Auckland’s under-18 invitational team to play in Queensland, Australia, and last year made the New Zealand’s Under-18 Trans-Tasman team that played against Australia.

She was now waiting to see if she's going to be selected for the Trans-Tasman team for 2015, enjoying a short break at home after being away to compete 24 days out of 36 days over the festive period.

and she had the opportunity to have a go.

“They [club members] said I was a natural and I got chucked into a game five minutes later – and I enjoyed it,” she said.

She still played in weekend tournaments at the Raglan Club, where most players were over 40 years – the oldest being 93.

But Ashleigh was not fazed.

“Everyone’s like ‘my grandmother or my grandfather plays that game – it’s an old people’s game’. When you start playing it, you realise why they're playing it,” she explained.

Ashleigh believed youth needed to keep the game going as the older bowlers would not be around forever.

Ashleigh’s next big tournament was in Wellington next month, where she would be one of the 10 North Island representatives to play against a South Island team.

I grew up in Hamilton and left home at 16. By 22 I had started and sold a couple of businesses. I had experienced money, success, travel, and a “sex, drugs and rock n roll” lifestyle. But in 1983 I was struck by a deep awareness that none of it could give me lasting satisfaction.

Money, travel, relationships, drugs, sex, work, position, accomplishments or possessions – absolutely nothing! I couldn’t escape the depressing conclusion. There had to be something more to life or it was just a bad joke. Then I read a pamphlet by Billy Graham, claiming that there was a way to a whole and full life through Jesus Christ. I said, “ok God, if you’re real, then please forgive me for the wrong things that I’ve done and if there’s something that you can do with my life, you can have it – I’ll give it to you!” I was sitting in my van at the Hamilton Lake when I prayed that prayer.

I was completely overcome by a peace and joy that was so far beyond anything I had experienced in my life. I would not have thought it humanly possible to experience the depth of peace that overwhelmed me. It was like huge weights lifted off me physically, emotionally and spiritually. The experience left me with bewildered astonishment, both at what I was experiencing and that God was actually real. The ‘high’ of that peace and joy stayed with me continuously for about 3 weeks. It was like God was showing me that the stuff I had been filling my life with were counterfeits to the reality of Him. T does, as they say, precede

rina Regnier’s reputation

her. She’s a teacher who is synonymous with the small, countrified Te Mata School on the outskirts of Raglan and “everybody” seems to have heard good things about her.

That despite the fact she took the two middle terms last year off work to have baby Lucy, who will shortly have this first-time mum on the run to fit in breastfeeding away from school at lunchtimes.

“That’s definitely a new challenge to my role,” laughs Trina, and one she couldn’t perform without the “exceptional” support of her school and her own mum who’s looking after Lucy during the day, just minutes down the road.

Trina got in a bit of practice with the routine for two days a week near the end of last year, when she ventured back to work to teach a te reo Maori programme across the school. She’s confident of her ability to cope with fulltime teaching again this year, hard though she finds it to leave Lucy.

At 36 she’s been in the profession

for 11 years, the past nine of which have been at Te Mata School as both deputy principal and, until now, the new entrant teacher which in itself demands “a lot of give”.

This year however she’ll be teaching year four and five children for the first time and she is relishing the prospect.

“It’s quite neat to teach the eight and nine-year-olds I taught as fiveyear-olds,” she explains. “That’s the joy of (staying at) the same school, seeing them grow up and having them back again.”

Trina says her biggest challenge this year will be learning how to be both a dedicated teacher and a mum to Lucy. “I don’t want Lucy or the students to lose out.”

To get the balance right she’s confident it’s her colleagues – most of whom juggle their job and their own children – who’ll support her.

Trina’s part of a close-knit staff of five women in the picture-perfect primary school, which caters for 80odd students and has a “supportive” rural community behind it.

“It’s like a family,” she says of her working environment. And while there’s hard work to be done, collegially there’s also a lot of fun to be had.

But you do need to love teaching to do the job justice, Trina insists.

“It’s about the people for me and the relationship with my students, (their) parents and colleagues.”

Despite being so long in the same job Trina feels constantly challenged in her position as DP and teacher because, she explains, even though it’s a small country school the Te Mata team – led by principal Pam Quirke – are looking to keep at the cutting edge of education.

As evidence of that two of its staffers were recognised recently as “expert teachers”, a new Ministry of Education benchmark achieved so

far by just 335 teachers nationwide.

Trina embraces the school’s philosophy of the “personalised learner” which means, in essence, striving to ensure every child has individualised learning intentions around what used to be called the three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic (now numeracy) – with behaviour goals more recently added to the mix.

It’s a documented approach by both teacher and student, Trina explains, specifying the next learning steps and exactly what’s needed to achieve them.

As an experienced teacher, she’s confident of her own “very strong” personalised learning philosophy.

She’s not so sure of the next step for herself personally though, having a bit of a reputation to live up to after three consecutive years of taking on big life events, all coincidentally in the first term of the school year.

She had Lucy last year, walked 100 kilometres in the Oxfam Trailwalker the year before and got married the year before that in 2012.

“Fitness and challenges are what I like,” admits the former New Zealand water polo rep, who also played the sport at representative level while a student at Hamilton Girls’ High School.

But that was then and this is now. And Trina’s simply loving the Raglan lifestyle with husband Mike on their two-and-a-half acre block up Te Hutewai Road, far from the hustle and bustle of the town’s busy summer season. Being able to “escape” and enjoy the peace keeps her sane and happy.

She loves the beach, walking and that “community feel”.

“We’d never move to Hamilton,” she insists.

fter a great double night shows at the YOT Club this weekend gone, Netherlands-based band MY BABY are back by popular demand for a final show this Thursday before continuing on their NZ tour.

The Chronicle caught up with the 3-piece made up of Joost van Dyck, Cato van Dyck and Daniel de Vries before their farewell gig.

Q: Tell us a little about your band and sound: My Baby: We try and blend blues, soul, funk and folk and sort of ‘voodoofy’ it into trance music.

We have two guitars, drums and vocals and we try to get people up and dancing. It’s hard to fit our sound into a genre, we call it a bit of Delta-trance, Louisiana-dub and Indie-funk. If anyone can come up with anything we’ll put it in the bucket list.

Q: We heard your weekend gigs went off! How was it for you guys?

My Baby: We played our Saturday show and were invited to play Sunday Sesh as well. The type of people that were out and the whole Raglan vibe really fits our style of music. Both nights it was a full crowd and there was great energy so it was a great environment for us.

Q: What is the appeal of NZ and Raglan for My Baby?

My Baby: We have a bit of Kiwi blood in the band so our visits to NZ are definitely becoming an annual event for sure. We're doing about 25 gigs around NZ and we love playing the small towns, they’ve got a great vibe.

Raglan really fits in all our ideals for life qualities, the way of life, surf, nature, food and people.

We’re from Holland and we get to visit all these beautiful places around the world and it’s amazing.

We usually do a bunch of Dutch festivals and also played SXSW Festival (annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival held in Austin.), which is a different vibe to playing gigs. In Raglan especially there is a community vibe and togetherness that we as a band get to join in on.

Q: What have you got planned musically for 2015?

My Baby: We’ve been billed as the UK support for Seasick Steve (American blues musician), which will be about 14 shows starting in April. We’re also releasing our second album SHAMANAID on the 12th March.

MY BABY would like to make a shout out the people of Raglan to thank them for the hospitality and invite everyone to join them for their final show this Thursday at the YOT Club. Doors open 9.30pm.

It was a proud evening for our Raglan Dojo as these two students were tested on their knowledge of various aspects of the Kiaido Ryu discipline.

The muggy weather in Thames that evening didn't make it any easier as they performed 'open hand' and 'weapon' skills mixed with offensive and defensive techniques.

Sensei Dean Message flew back from Wellington to support these two students who have been training since he opened the Raglan Dojo in 2009.

Letters: To the Editor, With the massive influx of visitors to Raglan comes a massive influx of waste.

At this busy time of year I’d like to acknowledge the hard working, friendly and committed team at Xtreme Zero Waste and unashamedly state that I am very proud of and marvel at how far our towns recycle centre has come over the years.

The consideration and work that has gone into developing the site and 'best practice' systems that make the centre tick should not be underestimated especially given the fact that the operation has never really had a lot of money thrown at it.

Further, we know that the team is doing a lot of external work raising awareness and changing attitudes and behaviour towards waste issues particularly among youth and in recent times have been working in other communities helping to develop similar operations.

Last Wednesday I delivered two ute and trailer loads with large bins full of recyclables, landfill, accumulated random bits and pieces as well as demolition and construction waste. The volume was significant.

As I unloaded with the help of XZW staff, everything, all that waste, had a home to go to or a pathway toward a new life or was being tidily set aside for removal to an appropriate

landfill site. The place was busy and the process flowed nicely taking a minimum of my valued time.

As a Raglan business owner, I know that in todays world there is commercial value and advantage from having the ability to communicate to customers that the inevitable and unavoidable waste generated by business activities is dealt with appropriately. Not every business community has that opportunity.

There will be a bill for me to pay at the end of the month as there is every month but I’m totally fine with that because two things are for sure.

Firstly, if I had to get rid of all that waste in an appropriate way myself I’d have little time for anything else. And secondly, while they are not perfect and there is a long way to go before we really sort out the waste issues around human activity on the planet and in Raglan, I can rest easy in the knowledge that Xtreme Zero Waste is cutting edge, they are operating with best practice and they are steadily guiding and progressing us toward a better world.

Long may this important organisation exist in our community and humble thanks to all the team, past, present and future!

Gals out in force for local fishing competition

We asked the women of Raglan: “Ladies Show Us Your Gurnard” and they certainly did!

January 3rd and 4th turned on great weather and fishing conditions. Our ladies were out there doing it, running their own boats and all. One boat-less lady hitched a ride with another lady crew, and they caught 21 gurnard - her best day!

The tournament was organised to ensure maximum fun and there was certainly plenty of that on the day.

On Sunday evening there was a ball hosted by the Raglan Club. The evening included a gurnard grunting competition, ‘toesies for posies’ and best dressed team. Additionally ‘Barry the Banker’,with his money box, gave a few hundred dollars back to the competitors. This was followed by a fundraising auction with Julie Hanna and prize giving.

To date a total of $2406.60 was raised for the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust – a great holiday effort.

Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 22 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 and the Waikato District Council Open Air Bylaw 2007 and 2012, that a RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON will be imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of the Waikato District Council Rural Fire Authority (except for territory under control of the Department of Conservation).

It also includes the draft General Reserve Policies Management Plan, which outlines management policies for all reserves in the district.

Council, under s41 of the Reserves Act 1977, invites written submissions on both draft plans. All submitters will have the opportunity to attend a hearing.

This applies from 8am, Saturday 10 January 2015 and continues until further notice.
