wasn't open so visitors had no option but to park on the yellow lines to be in walking distance of the beach. With children in tow and beach gear our beach isn't the most accessible at the best of times. Most cars that I saw had made an effort to be well inside the yellow lines so there should have been enough room for emergency vehicles to get past.

I know it's hard for council to provide services big enough for the influx of people over summer. It seems that it would be reasonable for council to turn a blind eye to parking offences at the beach on the one week of the year when the parking spaces provided do not stack up.

Dear Editor, Raglan is a very popular destination on a sunny day, especially Ngaranui Beach.

The town's visitors are great for our local businesses who need the summer crowds to get through the quiet winters so they are to be welcomed. It was surprising to see a parking warden at the surf club car park giving tickets to folk parked on yellow lines at the busiest time of the year after a spell of rainy weather when everyone was gagging to get to the beach.

We all know not to park on yellow lines but there are way more yellow lines at the carpark now and hence not enough parks for the summer crowds. The surplus car park at the field at the top of the hill

Councils move to Water Alert Level 2 Hamilton City, Waikato District and Waipa District are on Water Alert Level 2 as of Friday 8 January 2016.

resource, we need everyone to do their bit to conserve water. There are lots of ways to conserve water, for example taking shorter showers, watering the garden by hand, or washing your car on a piece of lawn which needs watering will save hundreds of litres a day.”

Waipa District Council Waters Manager, Tony Hale says while consumption has increased, Waipa residents are taking the Smart Water message seriously and informing Council of residents who are disregarding the rules.

“We’ve seen an increase in calls from the public about people misusing and wasting water. Our waters team have visited homes where taps and hoses have been left on when no one is home and sprinklers have been used excessively in the heat of the day.”

Mr Hale says most people want to avoid moving to Alert Level 3 and are doing their part to make sure there is enough water for everyone.

“We are really grateful to our residents acting as our eyes in the district and doing their part to conserve water. We encourage everyone to tell us when they see someone not being smart with water.”

vent manager Brian Ruawai has a vision for Soundsplash, beyond it being a music festival to entertain.

Following the success of the three-day event, which was attended by about 4000 people, Brian says he’s keen to do it all again.

“The higher purpose of Soundsplash is I would really like to see a performing arts school in Raglan, which is why I got a lot of youth involved (in this year’s festival).”

He wants to set up a trust to help fund such a school, with money from the festival going into the trust.

“The goal is to make Soundsplash a success, to put money towards this arts school ... to make it happen.”

His vision is that its students will also help run the festival.

This year he had two Wintec students help with event management.

He also pulled together a young crew of Raglan locals to help erect 1000 square metres of bamboo shelters at the festival, under the guidance of some experts from the United State “That’s a skill in itself,” he says. “They worked hard.

“The idea is to keep building on that kind of thing, getting youth involved.”

Brian’s own children, Kaea and Reiki, aged 17 and 16, who both had to go “over the hill” to get an education in the arts, had a lot of input into Soundsplash.

They can also be credited with part of the reason why Soundsplash returned to Raglan after a seven-year break. Originally running from 2001 to 2008, a combination of bad weather and competition caused organisers to call it off.

Brian says his kids are at that age where they want to go to other music festivals with friends, but he is reluctant to let them go because drinking is permitted in camping areas.

“I have played at a lot festivals and they are messy,” says the Cornerstone Roots vocalist/guitarist.

“They said ‘if we can’t go to those festivals, why can’t we have Soundsplash back’.

“It was our kids who asked if we could do a youth ticket.”

In the past there was a family pass, where children under 14 got in for free with a paying parent, as they did at this year’s event, “but why punish the over 15-yearolds with a full-price ticket?”

An alcohol ban in the camping areas reinforced the youth and family-friendly vibe of the festival.

“There was a very young demographic, which was good.

“For many of the teens it would have been their first experience (going to a festival), and we wanted that to be a positive experience for them in a safe environment.”

He says the youth that attended were “just buzzing to have a little independence and have a great weekend with their friends”.

“I’ve never dealt with that demographic before,” he says. “It’s about influencing positive behaviour … confiscating alcohol and not allowing alcohol in the camping ground … it’s about setting a precedent for first-time festival goers, that it doesn’t need to be alcohol-fueled.”

He says he’s very satisfied with how the event went, and Friday’s rain, which wasn’t unexpected, didn’t deter the young ones at all.

“Yeah man, they were vibing out. As soon as we opened the gates they were setting up their areas … walking around the venue, buying food … happy to be there.”

Volunteer Lisa Thomson, who was at the gate collecting tickets, says she loaned her raincoat to a rather wet teenager, but even with the rain the atmosphere was great.

“Because it was a very young crowd they were all very well-mannered.”

Stella Vos-Tutt, 17, and Lili Bush, 17, from Auckland, camped out with friends.

“The first day it was really muddy from all the cars coming in at the same time,” says Stella.

“We just ended up barefoot. Even in jandals you were sliding everywhere. The bank was so muddy, everyone was sliding down the hill.

“Once you embraced the weather it was really good.

“Saturday was so much fun because it was sunny and everyone was really happy.”

The girls say the festival was “definitely a highlight” of their summer holiday.

Constable Dean McMillan says there was no disorder at Soundsplash due to the high visibility of police and security staff, and it was a well-run event.

hen Peter and Miriam Dixon retreated over the divvy from Raglan 14 years ago to start life afresh on a lifestyle block on the outskirts of Hamilton little did they know they’d end up sharing it with a herd of woolly alpacas that look more suited to storybooks than the Waikato countryside.

They’d swapped their dream property overlooking Manu Bay – then known as Raglan Wagon Cabins but now Solscape – for a house on a large block of land just west of Dinsdale where they could at the time keep their Kaimanawa ponies. Instead they now have more than 100 alpacas.

Miriam is adamant they didn’t really want to leave Raglan, where they’d met and married more than three decades earlier, but says it ultimately became necessary. Peter had health problems that made breathing difficult because of the altitude there on the foothills of Mt Karioi, she explains.

“But we loved what we had created,” she told the Chronicle of the Wagon Cabins back then. They’d established 20-odd basic railway cabooses – most of which are still in place today – on site as alternative surfer accommodation.

And ‘Lonely Planet’ travel guide had given the funky cabins such a good write-up that the couple had backpacking surfers coming to stay from near and far at a time when bunkrooms in hostels were the norm.

“We loved meeting people from all over the world,” Miriam enthuses.

The couple also relished their involvement in the local community as stalwarts of Raglan Surf Life Saving Club where Peter was president for 10 years and Miriam both secretary and a master instructor at a time, she says proudly, when there were only six in the country.

The club had an average of four lifeguards back in the late 80s when Miriam set about training up her own teens and others in the community, she recalls.

That increased during their time in surf lifesaving to about 40 “clubbies”, many of whom she and Peter still have contact with today.

“We spent a lot of time with the lifeguards,” Miriam says, instigating swimming training once a week at the pools in Hamilton and putting on barbecues Friday and Saturday nights around the spa of their home with its 85-miles of coastline views.

Peter was a panelbeater in town but “his spare-time job was rescues out-of-season in the rubber boat,” Miriam adds.

Miriam was also busy with the local Scouting organisation in Cliff Street, and worked too as a Raglan agent for Waikato Real Estate.

It was a good lifestyle and when the Dixons had to sell up to “drive over the hill”, as Miriam puts it, they were particularly pleased it was to local couple Phil McCabe and Bernadette Gavin, who still own it today and have developed what Miriam and Peter started.

“It’s a magic place,” says Miriam of the 10-acre property, “and they were the perfect people (to take over).

“I still look at Raglan hills and see the sunset, just not the ocean,” she consoles herself of their 18 acres on Howden Road, a stone’s throw from the popular Taitua Arboretum.

Despite now being grandparents in their early 70s the Dixons are as busy as ever thanks largely to ‘Karisma Animal Companions’, a thriving business breeding alpacas for lifestylers. They started with four females and now have a herd of 110 alpacas – including champion stud Karaka – in an array of colours from black and chocolate brown through to grey, fawn and white.

“They’re such awesome animals,” says Miriam. “They’re addictive.”

Miriam also makes garments from their own alpaca fleece – felting it herself, and working with a small knitwear team. She sells the handcrafted garments at Pirongia’s monthly market.

The couple who met as teenagers on the beach while holidaying at Raglan have now been married more than 50 years, and say they still make a trip back once or twice a year.

Peter, a bearded bear of a man who unsurprisingly once played Santa in town – in a gig pulled by a Timor pony – sums up their affection for Raglan. “It’s an awesome place,” he says somewhat wistfully.

Holiday period marred by a few incidents for emergency services A

part from a double drowning at Ruapuke Beach and a car chase, the summer holiday period has been reasonably quiet for emergency services in Raglan.

Raglan constables credit a high police presence for keeping on top of any problems that can occur with an influx of tourists in town over the silly season, while the fire brigade and St John also reported an unremarkable Christmas break.

From December 28 to January 10 there were an extra 16 officers on duty at various times in Raglan, to help the three local officers, after complaints of drinking in the streets and fighting during the previous summer break.

Four people from Hamilton were arrested on Thursday last week following a police car chase from Raglan to Waingaro.

Constable Raewyn McLachlan, who was one of two police officers in pursuit of the stolen Mazda Demio, says the driver faces a raft of charges for driving offences, while all four occupants of the vehicle – the male driver, aged 30, two male teenagers aged 16 and 14, and a woman aged 20 – face charges of theft of a car and theft of petrol from a service station in Hamilton.

The car chase began outside the Poihakena Marae, went up Bow St, through Te Uku, and turned towards Waingaro, along Ohautira Rd. The driver swerved to avoid police spikes laid out on Waingaro Rd and crashed through a fence and into a pole in a paddock, says Constable McLachlan.

It was lucky that no-one was hurt during the chase in town she says, and figures that the fleeing car got up to speeds of 70kmh-80kmh through Raglan.

“There were a lot of people in town and a lot of vehicles on the road, and when you have a fleeing driver who is motivated not to stop … you keep thinking he will stop, he will stop, because it’s dangerous, but he didn’t until he crashed.

“On the open road – it was such a little car and had four people in it – he probably got up to speeds of 130kmh max.”

The car had been stolen in Hamilton on Wednesday. The car chase in Raglan began after a person had spotted a man trying to break into a parked car and called the police at about 6pm.

Constable Dean McMillan says the drowning of two Chinese tourists on Christmas Day was “just a sad day, really”.

The number of drownings in New Zealand has been remarkably high this holiday period, he says, and it’s a shame that three of those drownings have been in the Raglan area. The body of Cory Edgecombe Lilley, 17, from Hamilton, who was swept away in a rip at Raglan beach on November 26, has still not been recovered.

Constable McMillan says a group of six Asian tourists on work visas in New Zealand had gone for a swim at Ruapuke, and three of them – two men and one woman – had got into trouble in a rip.

“A member of the public assisted two back on shore and commenced CPR and the recovery position.”

The woman was unable to be resuscitated, and the man, aged 30, had been taken to Waikato Hospital by rescue helicopter, and later discharged.

A coastguard jet skier found the third person, a male aged 33, at the back of the rip, but he was also unable to be resuscitated.

On New Year’s Eve, police wrote out about 45 tickets for breaches of the alcohol ban.

Overall during the summer break, 150 tickets – some of them $250 fines – were issued.

“We had a good police presence and sufficient numbers to be able to deal with anything that happened,” says Constable McMillan.

“It was just rats and mice stuff, really.

Breaking the liquor ban and general disorder, pushing and shoving.”

On Saturday night, the second night of the Soundsplash festival, seven people were caught at police stops.

Raglan fire chief Kevin Holmes says it was a very quiet holiday period for the volunteer brigade.

It has had only seven callouts since December 1, including the drowning at Ruapuke Beach and two car crashes, which weren’t serious.

“Fire-wise, it’s been quiet because it has been wet. We have consistently been having a bit of rain.”

St John territory manager Hugh Davison says the workload in Raglan for the Christmas break

was “unremarkable, but that is a good thing”.

For the third year in a row, St John had increased the size of its paid crew in Raglan to deal with the growth in numbers over the summer break.

There had been nothing significant apart from the drownings at Ruapuke.

Meanwhile, Raglan Life Saving president Andrew Withers says Waipa District Council and an anonymous donor came up with a funding shortage of about $30,000 for patrols at Ngarunui Beach.

The beach would now be patrolled fulltime until the end of February, he says.

“That covers the school holidays which is our biggest stress.”

Business owners in Raglan say they have had a busy summer season and don’t expect things to quiet down any time soon.

Trade Aid retail manager Lisa Thomson says there’s definitely been more people in town than in previous years.

“And what I have noticed is that there are a lot of New Zealand families on holiday here, as well as our foreign visitors.

“Lots of young people and lots of young families.”

She says with Auckland anniversary Weekend and Waitangi Day still approaching she didn’t expect Raglan to slow down until Easter, “if the weather stays fine”.

“With all the great foodie places we are now a destination, we’ve moved away from just being a surf spot.”

Stairmand is going for a hat-trick of wins in the Open Men’s Division, a feat not completed since 1987.

On Tuesday, Stairmand placed second in his quarterfinal against four time champion Maz Quinn (Gis). The two surfers are shaping up as event favourites as they move through the later rounds of the event.

The championships are being held from the 11th – 16th January, the primary venue being St Clair Beach. It is the first time in five years that the event has been staged in the South Island and it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the host club South Coast Boardriders Association who are based at St Clair Beach.

How to deal with the Christmas splurge A the credit card bills start to arrive s the Christmas spirit fades and

you might find yourself struggling to pay for purchases you thought you would have plenty of money to cover.

Perhaps you might find yourself struggling to keep up with repayments on your rent, mortgage or car.

A combination of overspending and long school holidays and the post-Christmas pinch can leave many of us feeling a bit down at this time of year. If you’re struggling with the financial blues, there’s lots you can do to get yourself back on track and feeling better about the future.

So, what can you do to get yourself organised and make the most of your money in tough times? Here are 10 tips to help you through the post-Christmas blues: 1. Make sure you open your bank and credit card statements when they arrive in

the post or make sure you check them online regularly - it’s vital you know what’s going in and out of your accounts.

2. Work out a “realistic” budget and stick to it! Review it regularly - when times are tough, keeping track of your spending is vital. And remember, you need to review your budget in line with any changes to your incomings/outgoings.

3. Be honest and realistic when working out your budget. Try to include everything you spend - even that late night takeaway or morning coffee from the café!

4. Cut nonessential outgoings - rather than a take away or going out for an expensive meal at a restaurant. Why not invite friends round for a home-cooked meal?

5. Save a little each month. When times are tough, it’s tempting to put saving on hold. But putting even a little aside each month makes a difference.

6. Save any unexpected extras - if you’re lucky enough to get any kind of pay

rise or bonus, don’t spend it all. Try to put a little aside.

7. Treat yourself once in a while, even during hard times - life shouldn’t be all work and no play. By putting a little aside for treats, you can afford to live a little now and again.

8. Repay debts first though - while it’s a great idea to try and save despite the economic climate, it’s vital you deal with any big outstanding debts first. Don’t keep putting them off.

9. Now is the time to start planning for next Christmas so that you can have a debt free Christmas.

Responsible hosting The challenge faced when setting goals Every host wants to throw the perfect party that’s remembered for all the right reasons, but it’s all too easy for party guests to end their night in hospital.

As host, you set the tone for the party, BBQ or get-together. Role model the behaviour you expect from others and look out for your guests – especially young people – around alcohol.

Remember that it is against the law to provide alcohol to under 18 year old’s unless you have the express consent of their parent or legal guardian. You must have this consent for every occasion/event and alcohol must be supplied in a responsible, supervised manner.

There are some simple things hosts can do to make sure their guests stay safe while still having a great time, such as: • Making sure there’s plenty of filling, healthy food. Avoid nuts and chips because the salt makes people thirsty and likely to drink more.

• Having non-alcoholic or lowalcohol drinks available.

• Providing entertainment that gets people up and dancing! It’s good for your guests to keep moving and it gives them something to do other than drink.

• Be aware of fire risks. Candles are a common source of house fires – make sure all candles are extinguished before going to bed and make sure matches and lighters are well out of reach of children.

• BE A LEGEND! Don’t let a mate drink and drive. Arrange transport or make sure they can get home safely. If necessary, put them in a spare bed or on the sofa!

One of the ways we human beings fulfil our natural, in-built instincts to learn and grow is by setting goals that stretch and challenge us.

It’s often in the process of accomplishing the goal - or even in failing - that we learn and grow the most. Achieving goals helps build self-confidence as well as contributing to feelings of fulfilment, vitality and wellbeing.

You’ve probably had times where you’ve achieved a goal so easily that it seemed almost effortless. You established a goal and then, just as if you’d picked it out of a catalogue and placed your order, it just seemed to arrive, delivered to you at just the right time, all wrapped up and nicely packaged.

At other times when you’ve set a goal it might have felt as if you were scaling the face of Mount Everest to achieve it. Unless of course the goal was to scale Mt Everest!

You start out with great intentions and a

positive outlook only to find a few days or weeks later that you’re completely lost and off track.

There are reasons why we don’t achieve our goals, traps that we can easily fall into, but that can just as easily be avoided, if you know what to look out for.

Here are three of ten traps than constantly prevent people achieving their goals.

Trap one: The goal is not written down.

Writing out your goal gives you a powerful impetus to get it done.

Trap two: The goal leaves out sensory data. Writing down what you’ll see, hear, feel, taste and smell as well what you’ll say to yourself when you achieve the goal brings your goal to life and makes it feel compelling.

Trap three: The goal is incompatible with the other areas of your life. This results in self-sabotage and the non-achievement of your goal.

Be safe on the water Coastguard strongly urges anyone heading out on the water to wear a lifejacket.

By wearing your life jacket you’re giving yourself the best chance of survival because accidents are by definition unpredictable, and it is extremely difficult to put on a life jacket once you are in the water.

Coastguard is running its ‘Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade’ through to the end of January encouraging boaties and members of the public to bring along their old life jackets and trade them in for a brand new fit for purpose quality lifejacket at a great trade-in discount.

Bar Crossings Many experienced boaties have gotten into difficulty crossing a bar and each year, boats are damaged and people are killed or injured when attempts to navigate bar crossings go wrong.

Here are some simple tips that all boaties should follow when crossing over a bar: - Seek local advice on the bar and channels.

- Check the weather, tide and bar conditions.

- Check your boat and make sure hatches and equipment are adequately secured.

- Make sure that everybody is wearing a lifejacket and are awake.

- Ensure that you are carrying two forms of communication that work even when wet.

- Make a trip report to Coastguard of your plans before crossing.

- Post a lookout to monitor conditions astern.

- Approach the bar at moderate speed.

- Communicate to Coastguard that you have successfully crossed the bar.

- In case of an emergency dial 111.

The final piece of advice from the Coastguard is: If in doubt, don’t go out.

Outdoor bowls update Raglan Lions NYE Parade

New Year Eve’s Tournament: Our annual tournament was well attended especial by those on holiday and visiting our town.

About half of those enjoying the day were visitors. We are very happy to provide this tournament for everyone to have a fun afternoon of bowls. Keep it in mind for 31 December this year.

Anniversary Weekend Bowls: We are holding a similar tournament on Saturday 30th January starting at 1pm.

Report in time is 12.45pm please. Must have ‘flat soled’ footwear, jandals and barefeet are acceptable. $5 per person.

Championship Singles: Congratulations to Maureen Wahanga on winning our Open Grade Women’s Singles Championship Event held over this last weekend. Merleen Newport was runner-up in a very

interesting game that ended up 21/12 to Maureen.

Congratulations also to Corey Newport who won the Men’s Singles Championship Event against Bill Bond 21/18. This was a very close game indeed being 18/17 to Bill going into the last end. Corey had been trailing Bill for most of the game, but came back and had to do a measure for his final shot to win the end with three points, thus taking out the championship.

It was good to see such a great attendance of players and supporters alike. There were some really exciting games played during this event which shows the level of competition within our club.

The Knowles Triples event is to be played this weekend, 16th January at 1pm. Report in time is 12.45pm. Mufti dress as this is the 5th event in the Aggregate Challenge.

In sadness we report the death of Sheila Alma Anne Gibbs (nee Ranson), who passed away on the 23 December at Tairua Residential Care. Sheila lived in Raglan for many years, and became very involved in numerous organizations and committees where she willingly applied her skills. A supporter of the Raglan Golf Club, even as far back as the time of the Old Golf Course, at one time she also printed and organized the distribution of the Raglan Chronicle. She was involved for 20 years on the Raglan Trust Hospital and Rest Home Board and latterly on the Community Vehicle Trust board. In fact there are probably few groups she was not involved in, and all held her in the highest esteem for her willingness to help wherever she saw there was a need she could help.

We of the Raglan Community will always remember her with great gratitude and thankfulness. Rest in peace, Sheila, your work is now done. Thank you for it all.

Waikato District Council Parks and Open Spaces Maintenance Contract

Council is seeking to appoint a new Contractor to deliver Parks and Open Spaces maintenance services across the district from August 2016. These services include mowing, sports turf management, gardening, walkways and structures maintenance, burials interments, loose litter, playgrounds, graffiti, furniture and minor structures, beach grooming, revegetation and spraying.
