Over the past year I have been getting rid of a mountain of stuff accumulated by myself and my late husband, both of us lifelong hobbyists and hoarders. Load by load I have dragged it up Te Hutewai Rd in my small Mazda hatchback, along with all kinds of green waste. A task I dreaded has been made a pleasure by the staff, always so helpful and courteous, no matter how badly I have organised the mix. In no time it has all been quickly dispersed to Kahu’s Nest, the recycle yards or the skip.

Even a large box of toxic looking substances was ‘no problem’ and carried off for safe disposal. Thank you, all of you.

Top Challenge: ARC Events hope that a Raglan based event will draw plenty of competitors to town

A

n annual event that typically attracts hundreds of extreme athletes to the Coromandel is switching coasts again this year – and Raglan will be the base this time around.

The adventure race – whose course is kept secret from competitors until the night before the event – will run from Raglan in mid-March, bringing to town hordes of sporting enthusiasts who will tackle a series of tough land and water-based challenges which might well take in the rugged terrain of both Karioi and Pirongia mountains.

But then again, maybe not.

“Expect the unexpected,” organiser Keith Stephenson of Adventure Racing Coromandel (ARC) advises competitors who traditionally race in teams mostly of four but also of two and three.

“We throw in the odd, bizarre challenge,” he explains, amid a mix of disciplines like kayaking, caving, climbing, abseiling and rifle-shooting.

One such challenge in the past involved kayaking under a bridge, with one of the team then climbing up a knotted rope to a checkpoint.

The event comes to Raglan for the first time since it began back in 2000 in Coromandel.

“We were going to get there one day,” Keith says of Raglan, describing it as a “mystical” place with lots of history. “We like to take people to places they would otherwise never go.”

Raglan was considered as a venue about five years ago, he adds, but the adventure race then “gravitated” towards Kawhia where organisers picked up on a particularly good theme. Later events were held in the Kaimai Ranges and the Coromandel, but now it’s all on again for Raglan.

Six months planning has already gone into this year’s event, says Keith who could only reveal it’s set to start on the day at Kopua footbridge from daylight.

There are different start times for four separate races – the traditional 24hour and 12-hour adventure races, plus a new non-kayaking version of the 12hour and eight-hour races for those with difficulty getting a kayak.

This year’s event will include a

special service category for teams from the army, police, fire brigades and paramedics. Up to 110 teams or 330 competitors are expected all up, which is a far cry from the 30 teams who turned out for the inaugural event well over a decade ago.

That’s when Keith and wife Rita, along with mutual friend Andy Reid, shared a passion for multi-sports and the Coromandel Peninsula, devising the first Indiana Jones-type adventure called ‘Journey into the Unknown’.

Now ARC is renowned for putting on quality, challenging events including the K2 cycle race around the Hauraki Gulf and the Kauri Run on the Coromandel Peninsula.

While adventure racing is not big on a world scale, Keith admits, people love it. Some teams come back time and again, and have also gone on to “clean up” at world-class events, he adds.

Pulling together the Raglan event was made easy by finding a “userfriendly” group of Raglan landowners, Keith told the Chronicle last week, as well as liaising with longtime resident Lisa Thomson who has helped organise several local triathlons – and the Karioi Classic – in recent years.

Life skills, survival skills, character building and team work are developed during the sport, he says, which attracts equal numbers of men and women from every age group – school-leavers through to those in their 60s, with most competitors being in their 30s and 40s.

Entrants are kitted out with survival gear and have no idea where they’re going until the night before the event, he insists. “They’re pretty much working it out on their feet.”

A bonus for Raglan is that a local secondary school student will get to go this year on an all-expenses-paid course at Turangi’s Outdoor Pursuits Centre, courtesy of the Spirit of Coromandel Trust which receives proceeds from all ARC events.

“It’s a way of giving back to the host community,” says Keith.

Ask the Artist A series of Q & A’s with our local creative talent

This week we talk to artist Melissa McMahon who has created CIRCULATE - ‘aiming to raise awareness around current perceptions of stuff we call waste’.

Describe your practice?

I guess you could call me a multidisciplinary maker – I sew, build, craft, paint, illustrate and design.

And I make pretty much everything using salvaged materials – I hate buying new!

What are you working on at the moment?

As a summer sideline to my woollen ‘Dumpster Hoodies’, I’m making ‘Dumpster Tee’s’; taking old t-shirts and covering the ugly prints with fabric cut-outs and quirky handpainted posters. I’m also handwriting poetry and quotes on old plates at the moment which are selling really well so I need to keep making more!

Are you from an artistic family?

Dad is a musician and can also make/build anything he puts his mind to. Mum wouldn’t say she’s creative but her clothing, garden and home would tell you otherwise – her bright colours are her creative expression!

And my little brother is an amazing artist/illustrator - he is currently doing a tattoo apprenticeship in Germany! Proud sister!

When did you decide to pursue a creative career?

My creativity has always travelled closely alongside any other

job I have ever worked in. I can’t put it down and then pick it back up – it is always there and I am always making!

What are you influenced by?

Just observing life and the things around me – particularly seeing an unused waste material and then pondering how I could transform it into something useful/beautiful.

The best piece of advice you ever got?

Very recent advice, but it really struck me – Do the fun stuff first, the work will always be there and you’ll always make just enough time to get it done! (albeit in a hurry! ha!) Hard to put into practice when you’re a workaholic!

Best and worst thing about being an artist?

Best – being able to make things instead of buy things - especially gifts!

Worst – not enough days in the week to make all of the ideas that are leaping about in my brain!

If you weren’t an artist you’d probably be .....?

Involved in environmental education.

If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself?

A huge multi-leveled wooden pirate ship, with a lush permaculture garden on the entire top deck, goats, chickens, swings, a gymnastic trampoline and a punk gypsy swing band on board for constant dance parties!

Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?

I had a few influential ones, but my intermediate art teacher, Miss Miller, let me stay in the art room during lunchtime, she knew I couldn’t stop!

Your best traveling experience?

Hitchhiking through the Australian desert with $1 in my pocket…hence the discovery of dumpster diving!

New years resolution?

To save for an overseas adventure through Asia then on to Europe to see my little bro and get tattooed by him!

Police call on community to join fight against ‘legal highs’

aglan police are urging the local community to get behind them in trying to stop or limit the sale of “legal highs”, or legal psychoactive substances, in the town.

Under the 2013 Psychoactive Substances Act, the Waikato District Council has drawn up a proposed policy to control the location of premises which can sell the party pills, energy pills and herbal “highs” which have psychoactive substances as their active ingredient.

The public has until Monday week – February 17 – to put in submissions on the policy, and Raglan police are urging concerned locals to have their say.

“We would definitely want to oppose it [the sale of “legal highs” locally] and are looking for the support of the community to make it not happen,” Constable Raewyn McLachlan told the Chronicle this week.

“Clearly we don’t want them [legal highs] here. They’re more work for the police and not a healthy pastime for our young people to be involved in.

“There are too many young people hanging around with nothing to do as it is.”

The council points out, however, that while it clearly prefers the substances shouldn’t be permitted, the act provides for them as legal products and it can’t stop premises selling them.

Under the act the council can, though, control where retailers can be located, and how close they are to each other and to “sensitive” sites.

Its draft policy now out for public submissions proposes “legal highs” can only be sold in central business districts, and then

not within 50 metres of a sensitive site or 100 metres of another “legal highs” retailer.

In plumping for a CBDsonly approach the council cites the higher flows of foot and vehicle traffic which makes these areas safer, the presence of CCTV cameras and the easier enforcement with the higher police presence in main streets. It also points out that approach helps keep psychoactive substances away from residential neighbourhoods.

The policy also makes clear what council means by sensitive sites – areas predominantly frequented by families, under18s or “vulnerable” members of the community, and any site the council wants to become a familyfriendly zone.

But the policy gets into confusing territory when it shows on an accompanying map “locations where psychoactive retail outlets may be established” in the Raglan CBD. Curiously, the sites it identifies are those currently occupied

by Bow St Studios, the Raglan Service Station next door, The Shack, Jet Collective and Raglan Real Estate (Ray White), and on the other side of Bow Street the Harbour View Hotel and the Raglan SuperValue supermarket.

But as the new act prohibits the sale of “legal highs” from certain types of premises including grocery stores, supermarkets, service stations and premises where alcohol is sold or supplied, that would appear to mean that SuperValue, the hotel and service station would have to change the entire nature of their businesses if they wanted to sell “legal highs”.

The Chronicle put the apparent conundrum to council, and general manager customer

support Sue Duignan responded that “the maps do not identify the current use of the premises or whether that retailer could obtain a licence … instead they identify locations which meet the criteria outlined in the proposed policy in relation to proximity to sensitive sites and to other retail outlets”.

The central presumption appears to be that retailers may come and go but that sensitive sites won’t.

The Chronicle also raised the fact that Raglan Education & Childcare Centre – identified by the council itself as a sensitive site – is directly alongside the rear section of the hotel, but Sue Duignan pointed out “the separation distance between a retailer selling these products and sensitive sites is measured from each premises’ entrance along the most direct route of travel” and that measurements weren’t necessarily taken in a straight line.

Former Raglan Community Board chairman Rodger Gallagher believes the council may have failed to check the hotel also has a rear entry.

However he suggests that in the case of the so-named Raglan Service Station, the council might argue it is now a garage workshop and not the service station it once was.

Two other sensitive sites are identified in the map: the Raglan library/council offices and the town hall. The Plunket rooms and the Community House appear to be glaring omissions.

Doco traces ‘inspiring’Raglan recycling story

48-minute film about the driving force and attitude behind Xtreme Waste will screen in Raglan early next month to coincide with the town’s annual Recycled Raft Race.

While it neither warns of environmental problems nor teaches how to recycle, the documentary does demonstrate a ‘can-do’ attitude in the community which has made the Whaingaroa recycling operation one of the longest-surviving and most successful in the country, says local community radio station manager Aaron Mooar who made the movie.

He hopes people will find it an enjoyable watch and see the story as an inspiring one – as he does himself – showing how locals took the initiative back in 2000 by voluntarily picking up cardboard in their own vans and trailers to get the recycling process we now take for granted under way.

From those humble beginnings Xtreme Waste evolved, he says, achieving stability seven years ago with a Waikato District Council contract

supporting Raglan as a zero waste town.

“It shows we can sort out our own problems,” says Aaron.

Communities don’t have to wait for the government or the council or someone else to do it for them, he explains in the description of his film entitled ‘Xtreme Waste – Community Enterprise’.

Aaron took four years to make the movie, explaining he had to “fit it in” around his life as a family man and station manager at Raglan Radio 98.1 FM, operating from the town hall. He now feels relieved to be finished and is looking for a suitable venue in which to screen it come March 1, ahead of Xtreme’s iconic raft race the following day.

The fledgling film-maker never dreamt his project would take so long to complete. But once started he found he couldn’t just do an “average” film – he had to do it justice.

It meant he went out on the recycling truck one day to see for himself exactly how the job’s done, and he also interviewed three of Xtreme Waste’s six founders – locals Rick Thorpe, Liz Stanway and PJ – to include in film footage.

The group was instrumental

in transforming – on the advice of the late Eva Rickard and daughter Angeline Greensill – the rubbish dump of old into a recycling and transfer station to be proud of, providing jobs and education along the way.

Whaingaroa Harbour Care also came into the equation, diverting the stream and planting wetland trees to absorb leachate from toxic wastes historically dumped on site.

‘Xtreme Waste – Community Enterprise’ highlights the “huge” difference between a purely commercial organisation working for its shareholders and what Aaron describes as a group of people committed to environmental, economic and social change.

And when he shared the documentary with friend Alastair Lee, a leading British adventure film-maker, Aaron got good feedback.

“I was so inspired by your film I wanted to move to Raglan,” was the response.

Kiwibank pulling back on services

iwibank has admitted it won’t have quite the range of services that it offers now to Raglan customers once Raglan’s PostShop moves across into the SuperValue supermarket the weekend after next.

While NZ Post was highlighting in the Chronicle last week there would be a “dedicated counter in the SuperValue for all postal services and day-to-day banking services”, letters sent to Raglan Kiwibank customers make clear the shift does effectively represent a downgrade in banking services.

All Kiwibank customers will be able to do locally from Monday February 17 is bank or withdraw money.

“You won’t be able to open accounts and change or create direct debits or automatic payments,” says Kiwibank general manager personal markets, Mark Wilkshire. “These can be done in internet banking, over the phone or alternatively at one of our nearest branches in Te Rapa, Dinsdale or Frankton.

There’s no mention of other banking assistance locals have received from time to time behind closed doors.

Councillor’s Column The new year is well under way for most and Raglan has seen unprecedented numbers of holiday makers and visitors.

Council’s meetings schedule begins this month with Councillors starting with workshops on preparing the draft annual plan 2014-15. This is year three of the long term plan, and this will be released for public consultation in April and hopefully adopted in June, so there is a lot of work to be done.

This will set the level of rates and the work programmed for that period.

As I said earlier Raglan has had unprecedented visitors this summer which has put pressure on our ability to accommodate the number of vehicles that are coming to town. The amount of vehicles that were parked in inappropriate places was disrespectful to our community in my view.

I would encourage as many of you as possible to attend the workshop led by David Engwicht on the 22nd February at the Town hall. I think this is an ideal opportunity for the community to work with someone with an independent view of our town to come up with ideas that might for example make good use of the grass medium strip in Bow Street for people.

There is good reason why so many people are coming to Raglan to enjoy our environment and the many things we have to offer, and that is the many businesses and voluntary groups that work hard to offer something uniquely Raglan.

An issue that all Councils will have to grapple with this year is the Governments amendments to the Building Act 2004, the earthquake-prone buildings amendment, which will require Councils to conduct seismic assessments of all non-residential and multiunit, multi-storey buildings within 5 years and owners to be given 15 years to strengthen or demolish, It is my view that there should be some flexibility for Councils that aren’t in earthquake prone areas, rather than a “one size fits all.” The risk is that some heritage buildings could be lost.

There has been a lot of publicity about the Governments new Psychoactive substances legislation which are commonly known as legal highs. Council is currently undertaking consultation on this and I would urge you to visit the Council’s web site to file a submission before 17th February.

Anadarko plugs first well and is set to move south Texan oil explorer Anadarko said it was plugging and abandoning the first of the two deepwater wells it’s drilling this summer.

While there were some oil and gas shows in the Romney-1 well, drilled in 1.5 kilometre deep waters off the Taranaki coast, Anadarko said the well was found to be water-bearing and “did not encounter commercial quantities of oil or natural gas.”

The well was drilled without incident to a depth of 4.6 kilometres and

demonstrated that deepwater wells could be safely drilled in New Zealand waters, said Anadarko spokesman Alan Seay.

“We always learn an awful lot from unsuccessful wells. It will be useful to determine next steps,” said Seay.

Anadarko spent about 70 days drilling in deep water off the Taranaki coast, at a cost of up to US$250 million (NZ$309m).

The company’s licence to drill in the Deepwater Taranaki Basin ends on February 14.

“In terms of the drilling operation,

the ship performed above and beyond expectations,” Seay said.

The drill-ship Noble Bob Douglas will now head south to drill another deepwater well off the Canterbury coast in the Caravel prospect, and was expected to be ready to spud in by late next week.

Anadarko is conducting both wells under transitional arrangements ahead of the government setting regulations for oil and gas exploration in the country’s vast Exclusive Economic Zone, extending 200 kilometres out from shore. Scoop

Area Fishing Report: by the Raglan Wharf Seagull

You can say what you will, dream and think a little, but conditions off our coast recently have not been conducive to great fishing.

You have to feel for campers and holiday makers who came prepared with boats and gear and were not able to get out and fish. It is proven here in Raglan that it is not worth your while pushing the boundaries to catch that fish when the sea and weather conditions are not great. We ran our boats in June, July, and August more than we have since midDecember. The local Charter boys would be able to tell you the same. Hopefully the Indian summer is coming and we will be able to fish regularly.

The two marlin weighed to date were caught by very experienced skippers who run absolutely top vessels, crew and gear. So the tuna are out there, both albacore and skippies, snapper are in

the shallows after spawning and feeding to build condition for the winter. Good size gurnard are in the mix along with kahawai. We have large tides at the beginning and end of February; plenty of current at these times will see fish on the bite. Again sharp hooks and fresh baits are all you need to get a feed. The harbour navigation and sector lights are all operating and the harbour bar is on the leads. Very low tides have exposed harbour mussels that are fat and full.

Flounder have been plentiful around the upper harbour bays.Whilst we got feeds, we were netting in other areas because others had taken our usual spot.

Ok as there are plenty to go around.

Grandchildren caught legal snapper, kahawai and gurnard up in the shallows and enjoyed eating their catch each evening.

8.30pm. It features Whaingaroa Harbour and its health and fishing, possibly a long overdue documentary of great interest for those of us locals who have spent much time on our harbour waters and have seen the changes over the years.

Smokem Raglan, a smoked fish competition, is back on Easter Sunday.

Same format as last year. Free to enter. $250.00 cash for the top smoked fish and $50.00 for the top Raglan Club Inc. member’s fish, plus fine accompanying trophies. Fish must be locally caught, so no salmon. A bit of mixed spice and brown sugar are not enough to win in this contest. Local fish smoking reputations are again on the line this Easter.

Hopefully we are in for better sea conditions and weather from now on; see you out there, play it safe and have a lot of fun.

Catholic community opt for ‘Heaven’ When Raglan’s Catholic community were asked if they would be interested in ‘How Far is Heaven’ as the February movie of the month at the Old School, the answer was a resounding “yes”!

The widely acclaimed feature film about the work of the Sisters of Compassion at Jerusalem on the Whanganui River follows a very popular showing last year of the film ‘Gardening with Soul’, featuring another member of the Order, Sister Loyola Galvin.

So great is the interest in ‘How Far is Heaven’, that the members of Holy Name Parish are making the movie the centre of their annual summer social event, opting for the 4.30pm showing on Sunday 16 February, with a pot luck meal to follow. As the session is of course open to the public, other movie goers may like to join us.

Attracting more than 50 riders, the Brotherhood of Bikers NZ Waikato Christmas Elf Run held last year raised over $800 for HEARTsafe – enough to purchase another automated external heart defibrillator (AED).

The first charity run organised by the Waikato chapter, Brotherhood members were overwhelmed by the support that was shown.

“We were amazed at the turnout, a few of the guys from the Wellington chapter came up to support us, which was really good to see,” said Bush Barton, treasurer of Brotherhood of Bikers northern region.

Money raised by the charity run was presented to HEARTsafe in early January and will be used toward putting another AED in the Waikato region.

“Seeing all the bikes there just blew my mind, it was a privilege that they chose us to support,” said

HEARTsafe chairperson Brendan Knight.

While there were a couple of hiccups on the road, like the odd flat tyre, the day was largely smooth sailing and the bikers hope to make the charity ride an annual event.

Manu Bay lookout a real pumping scene More than the surf could be pumping below you when next you pull over at the Manu Bay scenic lookout to check out the waves.

The lookout’s closed and is expected to stay that way for the rest

of the month as contractors build a new pump station there for the Whaanga Coast wastewater scheme.

But there’ll be no blight on the landscape as the council points out the booster pump station, which will help transport waste to the treatment plant, is being undergrounded and only a control cabinet will be visible

at the lookout site.

The council says work on the 10km linkup has progressed quickly and next up will be the installation of pipework and pump systems to households which have joined the scheme. The project is expected to be completed next month.

A better summer for our gardens, cloudy cool days with showers every week, some giving the soil a good soaking, but deep wetting is still required at times.

Raglan sunflowers are a gorgeous sight now. Tall leafy green plants with big yellow flower heads that follow the sun all day. The bees are working those flowers, followed later by birds feeding on the seeds.

You need to be quick if you are saving seeds to eat or for next year’s crop. Mentioning bees, in the bush the Rewa Rewa trees flowered this last December, the first time for a couple of seasons and the honey produced from this tree is to die for. Very smooth and light, Manuka honey is quite strong in comparison.

Harvest time in our vegey garden. (Moon is in Aquarius, harvest root and fruit for storage) It is essential you keep up with the picking as it will enhance the continuous cropping of plants such as zucchinis, tomatoes as they colour, beans, peas, lettuce, silver beet, sweetcorn and herbs like basil that are very flush now. Potatoes that are ready need to be dug and stored. Keep up the weeding and picking runners back on climbing beans, watermelons, and cucumbers; lift kumara runners so only the main tap root fruits. Dead head roses, marigolds, sweet peas,

dahlias and others. Compost spent vegetables. Garlic, shallots and onions can be pulled; sun dried for a few days on the soil, and then strung up in your sheds for later use.

Plants and seeds of leeks, parsnips, lettuce, silver beet, carrots, all brassica and flowers such as stock, pansies, violas, sweet peas, polyanthus, and alyssum can be started. Carpet roses and a range of dwarf fruit trees are new lines they stock. Dwarf fruit trees are especially popular.

No new moon in February (January 31st was the day). Seed planting time is February 8th to the 16th, the first quarter of the moon phase. Full moon is on the 15th.

Feb 1st to 3rd sees very large 3.8m tides, so the influence on gardening and germination this month is very significant.

Plant of the month: Musselburgh leeks. Easy to grow, long shank with strong green foliage, and easy care once established.
