This  week  the  Chronicle  caught  up  with  clothing  designer  Dominique  Lecourtois. +RZ GLG \RX ÂżUVW EHFRPH LQWHUHVWHG LQ GHVLJQLQJ DQG FUHDWLQJ FORWKLQJ" When  I  was  8  I  met  a  Fashion  Designer  and  became  very  interested  in  sketching  silhouettes.  I  had  a  bit  of  a  different  style  at  high  school  and  enjoyed  op-­shopping  for  vintage  jackets  and  colored  my  jeans. :KHQ GLG \RX OHDUQ WR VHZ" :KR WDXJKW \RX" 0\ PXP ZDV WKH ÂżUVW RQH WR WHDFK me  how  to  sew  and  read  a  pattern.  So  I  made  my  prom  dress  thanks  to  her  and  was  enrolled  at   Montreal  Fashion  school...again  thanks  to  her  because  she  believe  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  important  to  do  what  you  love.

'HVFULEH WKH VW\OH RI \RXU ODEHO" My  label  is  a  bit  on  the  back  burner  at  the  moment.  I  have  been  really  busy  with  bespoke  couture  projects  for  brides  and  bridal  parties.

But  when  I  create  garments  there  is  a  strong   feminine  aesthetic  and  timeless  elegance. :KDW KDYH EHHQ WKH GLIÂżFXOWLHV LQ HVWDEOLVKLQJ \RXU ODEHO" As  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  still  going  through  HVWDEOLVKLQJ P\ ODEHO , ÂżQG PDUNHWLQJ is  my  weak  point.  At  the  same  time  word  of  mouth  and  building  a  good  reputation  seem  to  be  the  key  for  me. +RZ GLG \RX HQG XS OLYLQJ LQ 5DJODQ" I  came  to  take  a  break  from  the  busy  city  life  and  visit  my  sister  and  her  family.  Then  I  kinda  stuck  around  like  many  of  us. :KR DUH \RX LQVSLUHG E\" I  recently  discovered  a  very  talented  NZ  designer  Deryn  Schmidt.  I  love  her  work.

%HVW SLHFH RI DGYLFH HYHU JLYHQ" So  much  advice  from  wise  LQĂ&#x20AC;XHQFHV 0\ GDG DOZD\V VD\V ÂłWKHUH are  no  wrong  decisionsâ&#x20AC;?,  my  mum  ³IROORZ \RXU KHDUW´ DQG P\ VWHS GDG VKRZHG PH WR ÂłQHYHU JLYH XS´ ZHOO by  never  giving  up... %HVW WUDYHOLQJ H[SHULHQFH" I  live  it  every  time  I  go  down  to  the  beach,  have  a  swim  and  contemplate  the  surroundings  of  this  amazing  place  I  now  call  home. :KDWÂśV KDSSHQLQJ IRU \RX LQ " Not  sure.  I  seem  to  have  taken  a  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;?bridalâ&#x20AC;?  direction...Maybe  a  wedding  gown  range  with  lingerie?  ...we  will  VHH 'HÂżQLWHO\ VRPH PHULQRV IRU winter.  And  I  hope  some  time  to  get  two  clothing  ranges  out  per  year...itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  going  to  be  busy  and  exciting. :KHUH FDQ ZH VHH \RXU FORWKLQJ" That  has  been  my  weak  point,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  working  on  that....but  there  is  my  website  lecourtois.couture.com  that  should  be  updated  soon  with  the  bespoke  services  I  offer.  My  facebook  page  Dominique  Lecourtois  Couture,  my  studio,  and  a  few  stores  like  Three  little  Birds,  French  Curve,  Debrasic.   And  the  new  facebook  page  Hitched  In  Raglan  have  information  on  my  services.

Raglan shoemaker heads to Melbourne

Locally Owned and Operated Trash into cash: Trash Footwear creator Ben Galloway in his workshop

The  creative  director  of  Trash  Footwear,  which  used  recycled  materials  to  create  boots  and  sandals,  was  off  to  Melbourne  this  weekend  to  attend  a  one  year  shoemaking  course  at  RMIT  University.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  quite  ideal  to  be  amongst  a  bunch  of  people  doing  similar  things  and  coming  up  with  some  funky  materials,â&#x20AC;?  Ben  said.

He  started  Trash  Footwear  about  three  years  ago  after  working  for  his  father,  Rob  Galloway,  at  Soul  Shoes  on  and  off  for  the  past  decade.  The  aim  was  to  reduce  waste  by  creating  long-­lasting  shoes  made  at  the  Raglan  factory  from  quality  recycled  materials.

But  Soul  Shoes  used  leather,  while  Trash  Footwear  made  footwear  from  different  recycled  materials  such  as  canvas, Â

how  to  make  his  own  patterns  on  the  course  and  put  the  hundreds  of  design  ideas  in  his  head  into  practice.

Footwear  was  a  challenging  product  to  make  as  it  needed  to  be  functional,  comfortable  and  stylish  all  at  once.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pattern  making  is  the  base  of  everything,â&#x20AC;?  he  explained.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hopefully  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  be  able  to  design  shoes  from  scratch  afterwards.â&#x20AC;?

He  believed  it  was  a  good  time  to  invest  in  gaining  more  skills  before  his  footwear  business  became  more  established.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trash  [Footwear]  has  been  a  pretty  crazy  experiment  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  some  things  have  worked  and  some  things  havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.  I  think  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  try  to  pick  through  what  worked  during  the  year.â&#x20AC;?   Ben  had  only  sold  Trash  products Â

through  a  couple  of  Auckland  stores,  online  and  at  markets,  with  the  help  of  his  girlfriend  and  co-­developer  Melissa  McMahan,  who  would  be  joining  him  in  Melbourne.

He  planned  to  suspend  the  Trash  business  while  on  the  course,  but  in  a  bid  to  raise  money  for  his  studies,  was  currently  offering  discount  vouchers  online  for  his  â&#x20AC;&#x153;shoes  from  the  futureâ&#x20AC;?.   The  future  shoes  could  be  a  little  different  as  Ben  planned  to  move  into  shoe  design  that  was  not  solely  based  on  recycled  materials.  However,  he  wanted  to  retain  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ecoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  aspect  of  his  products  and  come  up  with  design  solutions  for  a  product  that  could  last  longer  and  be  easily  repaired,  deconstructed  or  even  composted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My  true  focus  is  not  necessarily  just  a  recycle  focus,  but  rather  a  sustainability  focus...  and  there  are  many  ways  to  create  something  sustainable,  recycled  materials  being  one.â&#x20AC;?   Rachel  Benn

Influx of summer visitors causes rubbish problems I

terms  of  rubbish  collection,  but  the  general  under-­resourcing  of  Raglan  services  was  a  concern  that  the  community  board  planned  to  discuss  at  its  next  meeting  on  Tuesday.

Rick,  relationship  manager  at  Xtreme,  VDLG RYHUĂ&#x20AC;RZLQJ ELQV ZHUH QRW XVXDO LQ Raglan  as  Xtreme  had  an  agreement  with  the  Waikato  District  Council  to  empty  rubbish  bins  twice  a  day  over  summer  and  three  times  a  day  on  extra  busy  holiday  times. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There  was  a  record  number  of  people  to  [Raglan]  beaches,  which  is  very  cool  for  the  town  in  many  waysâ&#x20AC;Ś  but  there  comes  a  time  when  the  infrastructure  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  got  becomes  stretched  to  the  point  that  it  has  to  grow  again,â&#x20AC;?  he  said.

hours  -­  compared  to  the  usual  three  hours  -­  due  to  the  large  volumes  of  rubbish  at  the  bays,  reserves  and  town.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;By  the  time  the  team  got  to  Te  Kopua  VRPH RI WKH ELQV ZHUH RYHUĂ&#x20AC;RZLQJ ´ KH said.  He  agreed  that  it  may  be  time  to  look  at  increasing  the  servicing  to  three  times  a  day  and  putting  in  more  rubbish  bins,  if  next  summer  was  as  busy  as  this  one.

Xtreme  and  the  council  were  looking  at  increasing  the  size  of  some  of  the  rubbish  bins  on  reserves  from  60  litres  to  100  litres. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[However]  the  question  of  who  should  pay  for  more  bins,  the  service,  alternative  product  stewardship  schemes  is  always  a  tough  one  for  a  small  rate  base  and  a  large  tourist  population.â&#x20AC;? continued  on  page  4

Councillorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Column :HÂśYH MXVW H[SHULHQFHG one  of  the  best  Christmas  and  new  years  holiday  periods  weather  wise,  that  most  people  can  remember.

Businesses  report  good  sales  to  go  with  the  fantastic  weather  and  generally  locals  and  visitors  have  enjoyed  themselves.

Parking  continues  to  put  the  pressure  on  but  KDYLQJ WKH 3DUNLQJ 2IÂżFHU RXW DW WKH ZHHNHQGV KDV NHSW WKH WUDIÂżF Ă&#x20AC;RZLQJ As  always  there  are  some  things  that  can  be  improved  on  like  reducing  litter  particularly  on  our  beaches  although  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  pleasing  that  people  that  care  for  our  environment  have  been  picking  up  after  others  that  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

Members  of  our  community  have  also  raised  concerns  over  people  not  observing  the  liquor  EDQ RQ QHZ \HDUV HYH KRSHIXOO\ QH[W \HDU RXU local  police  will  have  a  bit  more  support  to  enforce  the  ban.  Many  of  our  destinations  within  our  town  have  provided  enjoyment  to  everyone  but  whoever  is  GURSSLQJ ¿VK FDUFDVVHV WKDW HQG XS DURXQG WKH Wharf  is  undervaluing  this  popular  spot.

2015  looks  to  be  a  very  busy  year  at  Council  with  a  number  of  Policy  and  by-­laws  reviews  as  I  LGHQWL¿HG LQ P\ ODVW FROXPQ Council  meetings  and  workshops  kick  off  shortly  as  do  Community  Board  meetings.

The  big  issue  will  be  the  2015  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  2025  long-­ term  plan  that  will  go  through  drafting  and  consultation  prior  to  adoption  by  30th  June  this  year.

With  pending  changes  to  the  RMA  and  recent  changes  to  the  Local  Govt  Act,  particularly  around  contributions  policy,  will  be  widely  debated  by  Councillorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  as  we  set  budgets  for  both  maintaining  levels  of  service  and  capital  projects. :LWK VLJQLÂżFDQW JURZWK LQ SDUWV RI WKH GLVWULFW , believe  that  we  need  to  look  at  some  aspirational  community  supported  projects  across  the  district,  its  no  longer  business  as  usual,  this  is  why  economic  development  is  so  important  given  the  need  to  be  mindful  of  the  effect  of  rate  increases  and  affordability.

The  Councils  goals  are  grouped  as  People  (safe  and  engaged  communities)  Energy  (natural  resources,  staff  and  governance)  and  ;Íž  Economy  (  growth  ),  staff  have  been  developing  a  lot  of  information  in  these  areas  for  Councilorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  to  digest  as  we  go  into  the  workshop  debates  that  will  produce  the  draft  Long  Term  Plan.

Our  local  volunteer  community  groups  along  with  our  local  Police  have  been  kept  busy  helping  and  rescuing  people  that  have  got  themselves  LQWR GLIÂżFXOW\ DQG P\ RZQ REVHUYDWLRQV VXJJHVW we  all  have  a  responsibility  to  warn  people  of  the  dangers  of  swimming  or  doing  activities  in  areas  such  as  Wainamu  Beach  and  the  Bar. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing like a good pie

aglan  Pie  Company  pies  are  getting  more  of  a  following  each  month  at  the  Whaingaroa  Creative  Market.

Scottish  chef  Craig  Bell,  who  has  been  living  in  Raglan  for  about  2-­1/2  years,  introduced  his  pies  to  the  local  market  a  few  months  ago. Âł7KH ÂżUVW PDUNHW ZDV D VXFFHVV DQG WKH QH[W market  was  an  even  bigger  successâ&#x20AC;Ś.  As  long  as  people  want  to  buy  them,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  keep  making  them,â&#x20AC;?  he  said.

He  sold  out  of  pies  at  the  Little  Food  Fest  held  during  the  Raglan  Arts  Weekend  with  pies  such  as  the  beef  cooked  in  beer  with  smoked  mash,  steak  with  black  peppercorn  and  thyme  pastry  and  the  vegetarian  smoky  baked  bean  pie.  Craigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  recipe  for  success  was  that  everything  was  made  from  scratch,  from  the  stock  to  the  pastry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  key  to  any  good  food  is  that  you  use  good  ingredients  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  I  try  to  source  things  locally  -­  and  you  try  to  do  things  properly.â&#x20AC;?

At  the  moment  he  was  working  full-­time  planting  trees  for  Landscape  Management  Services  for  â&#x20AC;&#x153;a  change  of  lifestyleâ&#x20AC;?.

But  food  had  always  been  his  passion,  and  after  friends  sampled  his  wares,  the  idea  about  pies  â&#x20AC;&#x153;came  round,  as  they  kind  of  doâ&#x20AC;?.  Now  Craig  spends  a  couple  of  days  before  each  market  making  hundreds  of  pies  and  had  lots  of  ideas  for  new  pies,  with  varieties  based  on  the  seasons  and  what  could  be  sourced  locally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  guess  my  mission  is  to  do  pies  that  people  enjoy  but  to  keep  moving  on  with  it  too.  Like  anything,  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  good  to  mess  about  with  new  ideas  and  try  new  things.â&#x20AC;?

The  latter  issue  had  â&#x20AC;&#x153;had  a  lot  of  time  thrown  at  itâ&#x20AC;?  and  Xtreme  had  been  trialing  different  tops  to  bins  to  minimise  the  seagull  problem.

Â

The  Department  of  Conservation  needs  WKH SXEOLF WR UHSRUW DQ\ VLJKWLQJV RI 0Ć&#x2014;XL Dolphins  (0800  DOCHOT),  however  research  conducted  by  students  from  the  Worcester  Polytechnic  last  year  found  that  lack  of  knowledge  about  the  dolphin  prevents  all  but  5%  of  residents  from  reporting  sightings.  DOC  is  partnering  with  the  students  to  investigate  ways  in  which  New  Zealand  communities  can  help  save  the  species  from  extinction.  They  are  keen  to  capture  thinking  that  is  outside  the  square  that  DOC  or  the  Ministry  of  Primary  Industries  havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  considered.

reckons  it  takes  years  to  become  a  really  effective  teacher. +RQHVWO\ LW WRRN PH ÂżYH \HDUV ÂŤ thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  so  much  to  learn,â&#x20AC;?  she  recalls  as  she   relaxes  under  the  shade  of  a  grapevine  at  her  Cambrae  Road  home  on  one  of  the  last  days  of  the  summer  break.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;And  (it  takes)  quite  a  lot  of  training.â&#x20AC;?  By  training  she  means  not  just  the  stressful  year  getting  her  graduate  diploma  at  Waikato  University  back  in  2000  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  when  the  previously  two-­ year  course  was  shrunk  into  one,  only  with  a  similar  workload  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  but  also  the  on-­the-­job  training  and  professional  development  courses  which  keep  teachers  constantly  on  their  toes.

For  Margery  as  a  mother  of  four  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  the  youngest  was  a  pre-­schooler,  the  others  at  Raglan  Area  School  when  she  started  out  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  teachingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  always  been  juggled  with  the  demands  of  full-­on  family  life.

Only  recently,  with  the  last  of  KHU EURRG Ă&#x20AC;\LQJ WKH QHVW KDV VKH been  able  to  take  some  more  time  for  self  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  and  indulge  a  passion  for  illustration  which,  she  feels,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;worksâ&#x20AC;?  with  teaching.  Margery  heads  back  to  the  three-­ classroom  country  school  this  year  to  her  ongoing  role  as  DP  along  with  that  of  teaching  20  or  so  seven  and  eight  year  olds. Â

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  taught  at  Waitetuna  for  about  eight  years,  having  started  in  the  junior  room  before  taking  over  the  middle  school  area.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  love  it,â&#x20AC;?  the  51  year  old  enthuses  of  teaching  slightly  older  pupils.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;But  I  love  the  juniors  in  a  different  way,â&#x20AC;?  she  adds,  describing  the  experience  as  special  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  a  privilege  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  and  very  hands-­on.

She  also  relishes  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;diversityâ&#x20AC;?  of  roles  as  deputy  to  principal  Jo  Reiri.  When  Jo  was  away  for  two  weeks  last  year  Margery  stepped  into  her  shoes.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  liked  it,â&#x20AC;?  she  says.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  felt  like  I  was  trained  for  it.â&#x20AC;?

Margery  had  taken  on  an  XQRIÂżFLDO '3 UROH ZKHQ VKH FKDQJHG schools  from  Te  Mata  to  Waitetuna.  Part  of  her  job  was  as  â&#x20AC;&#x153;releaseâ&#x20AC;?  teacher  to  then-­principal  Matt  Stockton  in  the  senior  room,  and  when  he  was  away  Margery  took  the  reins.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  was  a  real  step  up  for  me,â&#x20AC;?  she  recalls.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Suddenly  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  in  charge  of  the  whole  school!â&#x20AC;?

But  it  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  until  Waitetunaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  roll  grew  to  50-­odd  and  a  third  classroom  was  added  that  her  deputy  role  was  recognised  as  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;management  unitâ&#x20AC;?  and  paid  accordingly.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  was  great  getting  acknowledged  for  what  I  was  doing,â&#x20AC;?  she  says.  Margeryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  taught  at  all  four  schools  in  and  around  Raglan.  She  began  by  relieving  for  a  term  or  two  at  Raglan  Area,  then  did  a  fulltime  yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  teaching  at  Te  Uku.  It  was  too  much  too  soon,  she  admits,  having  four  kids  growing Â

XS DW KRPH ZKLOH ÂżUVW VWXG\LQJ then  teaching.  Despite  having  good  support  from  husband  Rene  Andre,  she  suffered  â&#x20AC;&#x153;a  bit  of  burnoutâ&#x20AC;?  so  took  on  part-­time  work  for  some  years  until  landing  a  fulltime  position  at  Waitetuna.  At  one  stage  she  was  teaching  part-­time  at  both  Te  Uku  and  Te  Mata  schools,  and  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  liked  that  comboâ&#x20AC;?.  During  that  time  she  was  also  involved  in  reading  recovery  for  seven  year  olds  and  up,  training  as  she  went  at  Deanwell  School  in  Hamilton.  A  few  â&#x20AC;&#x153;fabulousâ&#x20AC;?  years  job-­sharing  at  Te  Mata  School  with  longtime  local  teacher  Lara  Sweetman  followed  before  she  went  on  to  Waitetuna.

Initially  at  Waitetuna  she  was  teaching  maths  at  both  junior  and  senior  level  which  eventually  â&#x20AC;&#x153;did  my  head  inâ&#x20AC;?,  Margery  admits.  But  it  was  good  training,  she  reckons,  seeing  the  build-­up  of  numerical  concepts  from  the  perspective  of  a  ¿YH \HDU ROG WR WKDW RI D \HDU ROG and  really  challenged  her  thinking.    Margery  believes  a  successful  teacher  has  to  be  good  at  time  management  because  the  job  can  sap  your  energy.  For  that  reason  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  important  to  her  now  to  keep  as  much  DV SRVVLEOH WR D QLQH WR ÂżYH URXWLQH â&#x20AC;&#x153;You  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  work  non-­stop,â&#x20AC;?  she  says,  citing  years  of  having  no  weekends  or  evenings  with  her  family.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  got  to  have  a  life.â&#x20AC;?

Her  lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  taken  on  added  meaning  recently  with  the  publication  of  three  childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  books  sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  illustrated  for  author  Jennifer  Sommervell,  her  Christchurch-­based  sister.  The  award-­winning  picture  books  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  a  nostalgic  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tales  From  the  Farmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  series  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  are  based  on  their  real-­life  adventures  as  Kiwi  children  growing  up  during  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s  in  the  small  rural  community  of  Takapau  in  central  Hawkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Bay. I was born in Galveston Texas and accepted Jesus into my heart as my Saviour when I was 12 years old. I was at a huge outdoor revival in a football stadium in Texas and I realized the empty hole I felt in my heart would be filled by Jesus! I did not grow up in the church and was not water baptised until I was 32 years old.

My Christian walk was more about convenience (mine) than developing a personal relationship with Jesus. I was almost always too busy on Sunday to be bothered with church. I became a physician and continued my Christian walk through patient care and medical mission work, occasionally making it into Sunday worship service. It took my older brother dropping dead in his kitchen at 49 years old from a heart attack to jolt me into the reality of my own mortality. This occurred just after my 46th

birthday and I was living and working in Texas. Over the next few years, it became clear to me that my walk with Jesus had been a limp at best â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and I must do better!

I did online course work and became an ordained minister on my 50th birthday. As I began to search for my next step, as a physician and pastor, I prayed and left myself open to Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan for me and my family.

Very surprisingly, that plan included me moving to New Zealand â&#x20AC;&#x201C; something I had never considered in my life! My wife, our youngest daughter and I made the transition and I have fully committed myself to Jesus.

I have never been happier and more content in my life. Even though I am a scientist, it has long been clear to me the world was created by divine plan and I am now walking the path with Jesus in the lead.

Inspired by an article he read about biodiversity on Karioi and current goals to prepare a habitat for Kiwis on Karioi by 2030, “Whether it happens in 2030 or 2050, I was just thinking that it’s a great goal to work towards,” said Ray White director Dave Hanna.

For this year’s walk, organiser Dave has teamed up with the Karioi – Maunga ki te Moana project, a community led conservation project, run in partnership with A Rocha Aotearoa New Zealand, Te Whakaoranga O Karioi, Whaingaroa Environment Centre, members of the local hapu, the Department of Conservation, Waikato Regional Council and the Whaingaroa Community.

According to their research, anecdotal evidence suggest that petrels – including Black petrel /Taiko and Cook’s petrel /Titi were historically present at mid-­to high altitudes on the slopes of Karioi, while Grey faced petrel / Oi inhabited the lower altitudes.

Petrels are a native species of burrowing seabird that like many other seabirds and forest birds are vulnerable to predators such as;; rats, stoats, possums and feral cats.

The project’s vision is restored biodiversity Maunga ki te Moana (Mountain to the Sea) and all involved in the project have been working together towards an integrated pest control program to re-­ establish Karioi as a seabird mountain.

“Unless active pest management is in place to protect Oi nests from predators, existing populations are unlikely to survive. Oi are a “taonga species”,

The second annual Walk Around the Mountain event will take place on 14th March, with the 43km track beginning and ending at the Raglan Golf Course. Participants will take an anti-­clockwise route going up towards Whale Bay and coming back down through Te Hutewai Rd. Entry forms are available for both teams and individuals and can be picked up from Raglan Ray White Real Estate. $100 entry per team/individual with all proceeds going towards the Karioi – Maunga ki te Moana: Mountain to the Sea project.

Summer soccer returns G

irl’s Summer Soccer is back! Raglan Junior Soccer will be recommencing it’s fun soccer evenings on Thursday 12th January at 5pm at Te Kopua.

There is sound economic sense in keeping our dollars in town.

Statistically, money circulates two and half times per year for each spend.

Simply put, that means that if every wage earner in Raglan spent just $5 more a week here, rather than outside of town, -­ and the receiver of that money kept it local as well, we would see around a million extra dollars in our local economy for hardly any effort! Increase that to $20, or even $50 a week and imagine how that would transform our town!

The Chamber of Commerce is passionate about encouraging local people to spend local – hence the ‘’Pledge’’ posters displayed in businesses around town, particularly in our CBD. These have been developed by the Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with our design partner Alexandra Images, DQG DUH WKH ¿UVW VWHS LQ HQFRXUDJLQJ Raglan residents to support local business.

There is a programme in place that we would love to encourage all our business owners to take part in, at no cost, and we now need our town’s residents to take up this challenge and really commit to supporting the local businesses that support them and the community.

There is an amazing array of products and services available to purchase locally – and I would argue that prices, and service (and parking!) are at least comparable to going shopping in bigger cities. I would also suggest that it is easy to forget that the compounded and invisible costs of petrol and other costs associated

with leaving town make s h o p p i n g locally a better value proposition anyway.

A group of passionate r e t a i l e r s from the CBD worked Susan Trodden hard on Chamber CEO encouraging late night shopping over the summer season and we are also seeing some great ‘’place making’’ happening in town. I believe there is lots of potential to make Bow Street and its surrounds, the place to be on a Friday night. We applaud their efforts, and strongly encourage the residents of – and visitors to -­ Raglan to support them – both by shopping locally and encouraging others to do the same.

New girl’s-only winter league The Waibop football federation will be running a brand new girls-­only soccer league in 2015 alongside the usual winter league on Saturday mornings.

This means girls aged between 5 and 13 will have a choice of staying with the mixed league or joining the new girls-­only league.

The new league is being run on the back of Football NZ’s girls’ summer soccer initiative which has seen lots more girls get interested in the sport.

Overcrowding  of  Raglan  buses  is  not  a  new  problem.  The  museum  has  many  old  photos,  including  this  one  which  is  available  on-­line.  It  shows  a  Hamilton  to  Raglan  AARD  bus  ready  to  leave  Frankton  Station.  AARD  Motor  Services  Association  was  formed  in  1918  by  long  distance  bus  and  tourist  service  operators.  Noel  Robertson,  the  founder  of  Robertson  Motors,  wrote,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;In  1920  we  opened  a  garage  depot  in  Hamilton  as  the  business  was  growing  and  we  needed  a  car  at  that  end  for  overload  and  it  was  rapidly  increased  to  two  cars.  7KLV JDUDJH DQG RIÂżFH ZDV WKH ÂżUVW 7RXULVW %RRNLQJ RIÂżFH LQ +DPLOWRQ MRLQLQJ LQ WKH formation  of  the  AARD  Motors  Services.  This  proved  to  be  a  big  mistake  and  it  was  not  long  before  we  got  out  of  that  organisation.â&#x20AC;?  The  last  AARD  Raglan  advert  was  on  Friday  7  November  1924  DQG WKH ÂżUVW 5REHUWVRQÂśV 0RWRU 6HUYLFH DG WKH QH[W GD\ $ DGYHUW IRU 5REHUWVRQÂśV Royal  Mail  Motor  Service  said  it  left  5DJODQ DW DP DQG 5REHUWVRQÂśV *DUDJH Hamilton  1.30  and  2pm  daily,  met  the  midday  train  at  Frankton  and  used  a  Super  Six  Hudson  car.  A  map  on  the  National  Library  website  shows  the  Raglan-­ Hamilton  route  as  part  of  the  AARD  network  and  illustrates  a  Super  Six  with  Dunlop  tyres  and  the  slogan  â&#x20AC;&#x153;No  better  combination  in  the  world  today  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  with  all Â

Hudson  Motor  Car  company  was  founded  in  1910  in  Detroit,  became  part  of  Nash  in  1957,  and  was  taken  over  by  Chrysler  in  1989.  They  had  a  reputation  for  making  strong  and  relatively  cheap  cars.  With  many  of  the  roads  still  mud,  strength  was  needed.  The  MOTAT  transport  museum  at  Western  Springs  in  Auckland  has  the  only  remaining  service  car  in  the  country,  a  1919  Hudson  Super  Six. 7KH FDU LQ WKH SKRWR ÂżWV 1RHO 5REHUWVRQÂśV GHVFULSWLRQ Âł,Q WKRVH GD\V ZH RIWHQ SXW WZHOYH WR ÂżIWHHQ SDVVHQJHUV RQ D seven  seater  Hudson.  If  the  weather  was  ¿QH WKH KRRG ZRXOG EH SXW GRZQ DQG WKUHH of  the  younger  passengers  would  sit  on  the  hood  with  their  boots  off.  Then  three  passengers  in  the  back  seat  pinning  their  feet  and  legs.  Four  across  the  dicky  chairs  and  sometimes  three  in  the  front  with  the  driver.  If  more  had  to  be  put  in  one  would  sit  on  the  bonnet  outside  the  windscreen  and  others  sitting  on  the  side.  What  with  luggage  bags,  parcels  and  mailbags,  you  would  think  it  was  a  Christmas  tree  coming  along  the  road.â&#x20AC;?
