Dear Editor, It was refreshing to see such good coverage of the Raglan Community Board meeting and to read in the Chronicle that Waikato District Council aims to improve its work with Community Boards.

However, it doesn't seem a good start to say, “This community board traditionally has Jo’s Takeaways. Te Kopua Domain......................................................825 8761 been incredibly negative,” It hasn't, but that attitude of Council brought about retirement of the best Board chair I've seen. Rather, the Board did its best to protect Raglan from the incompetence of the Council eg $1m wasted on water meters, which aren't working and are Marlin Cafe & Grill. Dine in. On the Wharf...........................................825 0010 unnecessary anyway, but which will continue to increase our targeted rates way over inflation.

Judging by the attendance of Board members at last Saturday's 'Place Making' workshop, there's still a long way to go in repairing the Council/Board relationship. No The Shack. For a workshop said to be supported by the Board, and looking at improvements to our main street, that seems odd.

Dear Sir, It was refreshing to read in the Chronicle that the Waikato District Council will be moving to a positive approach for its dealings with Community Boards.

My advice to them would be to get the WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts little things right as the first step of their new approach. As an example, last year Community Board Member Linda Cole pointed out that dogs were fouling the bark patch around the Banteay Srey Cambodian Restaurant. water fountain that had just been installed near the Plunket Rooms. The Board passed a resolution recommending that the bark be replaced with concrete. GM Tony Whittaker reported back at following meetings that the work would be carried out.

When I checked on Friday 21st, this work had not been done. The job would cost $500 if a Raglan tradesperson did it. Perhaps $2,000 if a tradesperson was sent from Ngaruawahia.

Either way a small amount of money out of the Council budget.

Council needs to achieve completion of this small project, then celebrate that success.

It would be a good start to moving to a more positive approach for its dealings with the Raglan Community Board.

Karen Britton Dear Sir, I would like to say what a great day at the Raglan West Park, last Saturday, where some inventive people organised a Westside Street Day Event. From 10a.m. there were games, one legged racing, potato and spoon racing, sack racing and every other conceivable event possible on the park. There were kids, (big and little) taking part, joining together in teams from the different streets, to compete for the Best Street prize. I understand that the Red Street, Nihinihi Ave, was first in points, but I stand corrected if this is wrong. Town square eyed as guru’s Raglan legacy The creation of a “town square” – mainly out of multipurpose platforms and seating which can be used as anything from entertainment stages to somewhere to have a coffee or play chess on a giant outdoor board – looks set to be Australian urban design guru David Engwicht’s piece de resistance for Raglan.

Barring any rearguard movement from officialdom, or overwhelming fuss from the public, a start could be made in a matter of weeks on the ambitious project centred right in the heart of town at the junction of Bow Street and Wainui Road.

The project emerged last Saturday from an interactive workshop at the town hall supported by the community board and attended by about 25 Raglan residents who, when the Chronicle turned up towards the end of the day-long event, were buzzing with excitement over the plan but at the same time concerned that not too much was said about it publicly at this point.

David, the co-founder of the Creative Communities movement, preaches something of a just-get-on-with-it message and he confirmed after the workshop that work on

developing the town square would begin as soon as possible.

“Sometimes you just have to do it,” he told the Chronicle of a scheme which seems bound to surprise if not shock many townsfolk – though not so much, perhaps, the Harbour View Hotel patrons who last Friday night watched with intrigue as he drew various chalk lines on the road denoting where various components of the town square might go.

David told the Chronicle after the workshop that the key to the project was that it would have a multipurpose infrastructure allowing a wide range of uses, from street performances to a play area for children to a place for people to picnic.

“It’s very much like with a house: you don’t nail your furniture to the floor, so why should street architecture be any different?”

One obviously major issue is the potential jamming of vehicle flows about the centre of town, but David said only that “we’ll sort out the traffic conflicts” and, lightheartedly, that u-turns might be out of the question.

He also emphasised that it was a 12 month trial and that people shouldn’t judge the project too quickly.

“We think it will take a bit of getting used to, and there will be nay-sayers along the way,” he said. “But we’re confident it will win

locals over in the end.”

He pointed out that the revitalisation of the centre of Paihia was more extensive than what’s planned here – and far more controversial than he expects the town square project to be.

Businesses in Paihia had been worried they’d “go to the wall”, he said, but that hadn’t happened and the tourist town was now celebrating its revitalisation.

The project’s cost – along with its details – has yet to be released but Engwicht initiatives generally seem to be low-budget developments. The only cost the Chronicle heard mention of was $900 for a giant plastic chess set, but then a workshop participant indicated one might be obtained for free.

David Engwicht first came to town last November, and it was out of this workshop that Raglan’s first “place makers” project – the library linger node – was undertaken.

Waikato District Council has worked in closely with both his visits. Seated on the sidelines when the Chronicle visited last Saturday’s workshop were council general manager strategy & support Tony Whittaker and Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley, while senior policy planner Betty Connolly was helping run the wrap-up session.

Council’s Raglan library and office to move as renovations begin Renovations to Waikato District Council’s Raglan library and office are set to begin next month to address a leaking roof and the need for more space.

The work is extensive and will see the office and library services relocated for approximately four months while the project is carried out.

The existing site will remain open until 5pm, Thursday 6 March before closing down to allow for relocation to 39 Bow Street (the former New Zealand Post shop).

Business will resume at the temporary premises at 9am on Monday 17 March.

Customers are asked to take care of any urgent Council business or books before the close down period, or are welcome to visit one of Council’s other offices.

Waikato District Council General Manager Customer Support, Sue Duignan said the work would see a “bigger and better space” for customers.

“It’s really exciting to see this project coming to fruition. The building is a hub in Raglan, for both locals and visitors, and it will be great to see the space rejuvenated.”

Construction will commence on Monday 10 March and will involve replacing and

moving the shop front out and removing an interior wall to create additional space, along with replacing the existing counters and installing a new toilet for the disabled.

A new roof, guttering and flashings will be installed as well as replacement of all the high level window seals.

Ms Duignan said that while there would be a slight reduction in library services at the temporary location, it would mostly be business as usual.

“Full Council services will continue to be available throughout the project; however the temporary premises will see a reduced library service offered. The smaller space will mean there will be fewer books available, but these will be rotated regularly to keep stock fresh.”

The computer terminals will not be available but wireless internet will continue to be offered at the temporary premises, along with Toddler Time sessions.

The bus stop in front of the current building will remain open during the project, however people are asked to be mindful of the construction.

Council’s contractor will be working on site between the hours of 7am and sunset, Monday to Friday, and 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. WDC

Hollow ring now to ‘quake risk’ claim What’s good for the goose may be good for the gander but a commercial premises which Raglan’s library and council office is happy to move into temporarily certainly wasn’t up to scratch in the eyes of former tenant New Zealand Post.

The state-owned enterprise moved its PostShop out of 39 Bow Street and into the SuperValue supermarket recently, citing “seismic compliance” issues and adding it hadn’t been able to find suitable alternative premises about town.

But its suggestion 39 Bow Street is an earthquake risk now has – like the odd goose egg – a rather hollow ring about it. Waikato District Council, which is to lease the premises for about four months from the middle of next month, says it has no evidence to suggest the building is earthquakeprone.

All of which seems to leave New Zealand Post with egg on its face – unless it knows something council doesn’t.

Revived Raglan Fives very much a young man’s game – for now Wellington has its sevens, Auckland’s just held its first nines – and now Raglan’s got its fives back.

The Raglan Beach Fives were played on the Kopua Domain sands on Saturday for the first time since 2006, and organisers are hoping it will become a more regular fixture again as they try to “grow rugby as a young man’s game in the Waikato”.

There were no grandstands or any facilities to speak of – only the odd park bench or shade shelter, and a row of tents back up on the grass – but the handful of colts and women’s teams from around the Waikato who turned up for the tournament got plenty of barracking all the same as they struggled for both continuity and breath in the heat and on the soft sand.

At the end of the day – well, more early afternoon really because the pool games were quickly disposed of on the two supposedly 31 by 25 metre grounds – it was Kihikihi

who took out the colts (under 21s) title from Pirongia, and Marist who beat University in the open women’s final.

Raglan Rugby Club did manage to put a colts team together at the 11th hour but Fives organiser Ratu Mataira says it was

“more of a laugh – they had a run but didn’t get anywhere”. The referee even asked the Raglan side before their first encounter if any had ever played Fives before, and when it became clear none had he gave them a quick on-field rundown of the basic rules. E Symes

TV slot, food shows, a cookbook: Aaron has plenty on his plate People still do a “double take” in the supermarket – downtown in Raglan, or at Countdown in Hamilton and Auckland – when MasterChef winner Aaron Brunet’s out shopping.

He’s even had strangers ask upfront if, for instance, silverbeet might work in a recipe when kale can’t be found in-store. And while that kind of thing is a bit of fun, says Aaron, it was “quite weird” at first when he won instant celebrity status along with the MasterChef New Zealand title last June.

“I’m certainly getting used to being recognised (now),” he told the Chronicle this week, admitting it had taken a while to adjust.

Winning MasterChef 2013 has definitely opened doors for the one-time IT consultant who used to work from home on Wainui Road, not far past the Ngarunui beach turnoff.

Coming up this weekend, he’s busy with the Waikato Food & Wine Festival at Claudelands Arena, and that’s to be followed by a quick trip to Auckland on Monday where he’ll be filmed from 8am doing two recipes – each a seven-minute segment for TV One’s Good Morning show.

He says a lot of “logistical planning” goes into his TVNZ shows, which he’s done half a dozen times now. And it’s only going to get busier from next week when he has a regular Good Morning slot like that of baby whisperer Sharlene Poole who also commutes frequently

from Raglan to the TV studios.

Food festivals, too, take time management skills and careful planning of new recipes to be a success, Aaron adds. While it’s just days before the Waikato event, he’s already tackled food festivals in Auckland last August and Christchurch in September.

At one point he was also tied up for a month cooking at Euro on Auckland’s Viaduct, for celebrity chef and MasterChef judge Simon Gault. While the experience provided “a lot of excitement and satisfaction” for Aaron, it was never going to fit in with family life back in Raglan.

“It’s about as far as you could go from being a home cook.”

But Aaron’s had a good stint at home cooking too up until last month, working on an exclusive cookbook deal which along with a Skoda was part of his $100,000 prize package.

Due to be launched around the country in April, the book is about food you might cook every day with a few “MasterChef-y” things thrown in for good measure, Aaron explains. His $20,000 supply of Countdown vouchers from the win have been put to good use, he adds, buying all the ingredients needed for the recipes and his own grocery bill.

Developing 120 recipes, narrowing that down to 80 and then writing them up was a time-consuming project, he admits. Two years would have been “ideal” but he had just six

that’s a big reason to stay put. So too is the fact wife Ani teaches yoga from their home. Half the house has become a yoga studio, says Aaron, which is “a nice part of our life”.

Meanwhile both yoga and swimming – in the estuary under the

footbridge – are big things in Aaron’s leisure time. He’s also squeezed in recently a week’s break with family in the Bay of Islands.

Meantime Aaron’s enjoying being on the other side of the fence while watching the new series of MasterChef now screening.

“You watch it knowing how the timing of things happens, the sequence of how it all works,” he says.

He’s also intrigued at seeing how much the judges appear to help the contestants. “When you’re there you wonder if they really are helping you.”

So where to next for the 43-year-old who had Raglan captivated by his unflappability in the MasterChef kitchen this time last year? Aaron’s happy for now to stay in Raglan and to stay in food “but who knows what the future holds”.

A walk or cycle up to the Te Uku wind farm and back on Saturday morning is set to raise funds for the Waikato branch of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, which has a strong local network thanks to the ongoing work of a group of Raglan women.

The branch is raising “much-needed” funds to help buy a replacement car for the fieldworker who covers the Waikato/ Taranaki area, says chairperson and former national president Helen Palmer.

Although she lives on the farm of the Pipiwharauroa Trail, 420 metres above sea level, it’s a “first time” walk for Helen herself who hopes to have a sausage sizzle at the top for those who

haven’t brought their own picnic along.

Everybody’s welcome to either bike or walk the trail, she adds, and to take in the stunning views of the Raglan, Aotea and Kawhia harbours from the Wharauroa Plateau. It’s nine kilometres up, starting at Te Mata quarry on Kawhia Road, just past the Bridal Veil Falls carpark.

Opinion: Seabed sand and mining There is quite some confusion in our community about the two issues of Seabed Sand mining vs Oil Drilling.

The exploration oil well off our coast has been capped, but the Seabed Sand Mining company, TTR, are expanding their efforts. Seabed Mining is open cast sand mining of the seafloor, as deep as six stories down. Large ships suck up the sand, grinding it on board to extract iron ore. The left over silt is spat out into the ocean currents creating oxygen depletion zones and smothering all life.

Our entire west coast is up for exploration and the first precedent setting permit to mine is going through a newly set up government department called the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA. Hearings start March 10th. TTR’s first application area is off the coast of Patea, but an exploration permit for 93,000 hectares of seabed between Ruapuke and Awakino, has just been issued to the same mining company. Our coast could be next.

At the end of last year, KASM (Kiwis Against Seabed Mining) asked concerned people to make submissions against the Patea application to try to stop the mining company in their tracks.

4400 people did. That was amazing! But it is only half the battle. Now we have to go to the hearings and convince the commissioners that open cast seabed sand mining is a very bad practice.

In order to do a good job in representing all those submitters, KASM needs to employ expert scientists and lawyers. We need our experts to be effective against the mining company TTR, which has millions of dollars at its disposal. Our experts are minimizing fees, but it’s still going to cost in excess of $50,000.

So we need money and are fund raising. Can you help? For starters you’ll see us at Maui dolphin day, where we will have a jumble sale. If you have any pre-loved gear you would like to donate please drop it by 16 Glimour St (near Old School Art Centre), before March 2nd.

As we enter into our 15th year of operation we have taken the time to reassess who we are and what we do.

Our over all mission statement is to "work together to achieve zero waste". To have a goal of zero waste makes us unique in the

waste industry, and with one of the highest diversion from landfill rates in the country, we are proud of our point of difference. We want to reflect this in our name. In line with our zero waste values, the roll out of the name change will be staged, with material only being replaced when needed.

This latest effort, recorded under the watchful eye of awardwinning producer Andrew Buckton, is a truly brutal assault on the senses. On Sunday, The Yot Club is very excited to have Dick Johnson play in the club from 10pm. There are only ever 1-5% of fleas on the animal… the remaining 95- 99% are in the environment. The stages that are found on animals are adult fleas and flea eggs. The eggs fall off the pet and hatch into larvae, which then become pupae… When mature, the pupae hatch into adult fleas when the vibration of a passing animal stimulates them. The flea then jumps aboard and the cycle begins all over again.

2001 Recycled Trolley Derby

Are you ready for “the most impressive, hilarious, colourful, fall-aparty, surprising, wet race you could ever be a part of?” The Xtreme Waste Recycled Raft Race is back for it’s tenth anniversary!

The raft race was born in 2004 of the wild and somewhat risky Recycled Trolley Derby that ran in Xtreme’s first years. Having fun with our creative and resourceful community has been a focus from the start.

Some memorable rafts from the past include a bathtub, a hot water cylinder and an old car bonnet.

Many rafts of course have sunk, been dragged over the finish line or have been rescued! We’re thankful to Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving, Raglan Kayaks and all our paddlers for keeping the race safe and also retrieving any broken-down rafts and bits from the harbour.

Winners include Phil Meek and brother, Chris Meek and Sean Oliver. Zak and Pania Stanway Thorpe have made it into the top three quite a few times, and Whatawhata and Waitetuna schools have created some Best Rafts. Waitetuna School once put their entire senior class on one raft. That’s over 30 people!

Last year’s winning raft had previously won as a paddled raft in 2009, it snapped in half in 2008, it sunk at the finish in 2011, but then was upcycled to leg power and peddled instead of paddled

We talked to Aaron Moarr, whose documentary about Xtreme Waste is debuting on March 1st. He told us there will be some footage and stories in his film from previous raft races. “Raglan Bill always enters a raft – one year he tested his raft made out of plastic bottles and found that it didn’t quite float. He had to drink 14 more bottles of Scrumpy quick to give it the floating power it needed.”

Rick Thorpe, Public Relations manager at Xtreme Waste has been to them all. He says, “It’s always good fun, an event that brings our community together to enjoy each other and the special place where we live.”

Smokem comp is back for 2014 The 2013 catch cry was “Let a flounder filleting competition. The Interviewing top sportspeople in our community Fishing Section is prepared to put up the judging begin” after 58 local entries of smoked fish were a $50.00 Raglan Club voucher for 1st submitted for the inaugural prize. Flounder will be provided on the day for a small fee. This will be a real Smokem Raglan.

Entries were curried, spiced, hot, chilled, glazed, or blackened, and secret, never to be revealed, concoctions used, but there could only be one winner. Jan Mitchell was judged the best with a smoked eel, with Barbara Hubert being awarded the best entry by a Raglan Club Inc. Member with smoked snapper.

Now in 2014, the past means nothing, we begin again on Easter Sunday, 20th April. Entry is free, with the same procedure as last year. Bruce Tricklebank’s trophy plus $250.00 cash for the best smoked fish. Best smoked fish by a Raglan Club Inc. member receives the Bill Edwards trophy plus $50.00. These are awesome trophies and prizes; there are no seconds or thirds with smoked fish, and you have to present the best.

Flounder Filleting: it has been suggested that whilst the judging of the smoked fish is being done we run

fun event, seeing the different methods used and the type of knives most suited to the task. Like sheep shearing, this event is judged on the night for speed, quality of the fillet and what is left on the flounder frame. Sounds like fun, but it is going to be tough to get it right.

So, Smokem Raglan participants, submit your fish between 3.00pm and 5.30pm. Judging starts promptly at 6.00pm. Flounder filleting will be 6.15pm or so. Local reputations are at stake again this Easter Sunday, we don’t want outsiders winning, do we?

Will the ladies win again?

The true winning smoked fish is really tricky to get right; too salty or dry and you are out. We are not after presentation as all entries submitted get replated on to white plastic coded plates. The colour, the smell, the moisture content, and the taste being just right, you could be our 2014 Smokem Raglan proud winner. Yes! The Raglan Wharf Seagull.

Gals N Gurnard Fishing Tournament 2015 The Fishing Section of the Raglan Club Inc. announces that the dates for the annual and very popular Gals n Gurnard Fishing Tournament will be the 3rd and 4th January 2015, Saturday and Sunday.

Briefing night will be on Friday January 2nd, with prizegiving Sunday

evening January 4th. Back up will be the following weekend if the weather is again inclement.

Election year road shows to hit town Every two months over the past two years the Fishing Section of the Raglan Club Inc. has invited interesting speakers to come along and speak on topics related to fishing. In general these nights have been a great success.

This year it has been decided that, as it is Election year, we will invite representatives of all major political parties to come to Raglan at a time to suit them and speak to our community. When contacted, all have said a big “yes”. The Raglan Club Inc. has no favoured political direction and all parties will be treated the same on their evenings. We will provide our speaker system and other Club facilities, and advertise their meeting date and time via the Raglan Chronicle.

We think this is of interest to all the people of the greater Raglan area and all will be made most welcome to the Club when attending.

Karioi Classic set for 2014 Karioi Classic, Raglan’s iconic cycling event around Mt Karioi, has been going for 5 years now.

To celebrate this, organizers Lisa Thomson and Dirk De Ruysscher have come up with something special this year.

On Sunday 20 July, young cycling talent from 6 years up to 12 years old, can participate in the inaugural Kids Karioi Classic, starting at the airfield by Te Kopua Domain. The younger ones will race 4km while the older ones will cover 8km. There will be a few mini gravel climbs on the course, just to stay in the same spirit as its big brother race around our beautiful maunga.

Seven days later, it will be time for the big ride. And with big, we really do mean big. The Classic has been extended with 14km new gravel roads and a few extra gruelling climbs. But don’t despair : also new is the team option. Teams of 2 riders can enter and do each half of the course distance.

And that’s not all. For the first time ever, athletes can enter the Karioi Classic Run. Runners will run around along the original Karioi Classic course but with a little twist. All we can say is that you’ll need trail running shoes.

Obviously this marathon is open to individuals and teams of 2 or 3.

So, there are 5 months left to get in shape. We’ll see you then.
